This petroleum-engineering study of the Healdton oil field in Carter County, Okla., describes the geology and production history of that field and estimates the oil reserves that could be produced by efficient secondary-recovery methods. The Healdton field, in western Carter County approximately 20 miles west of Ardmore, Okla., was discovered in 1913 and was one of the early important oil-producing areas in the State. Although the volume of oil recovered from the Healdton sands has been comparatively high, studies show that a large reserve remains in the pressure-depleted sand, which can be recovered by efficient water-flood operations. In making this study of the Healdton-sand reservoir, the writers utilized many data already available in company and Government offices. Most of the fluid samples were collected by Bureau of Mines personnel and analyzed in the Bureau's laboratories at Bartlesville, Okla.; but other data, including logs, core analyses, and production records, were obtained from outside sources. These data were examined critically but were not verified, and possible errors in the original data may be reflected in the conclusions. In this study, attempts were made to consider only those aspects of the available information that would contribute to a clear and concise engineering report on the Healdton-sand reservoir. Other phases of the data, as well as those concerning associated reservoirs, were eliminated from consideration as being irrelevant to the particular problem. Cores and drill cuttings of the Healdton sands were analyzed and studied to determine the nature of the reservoir rocks. Analyses of samples of produced oil, water, and gas were studied to fix the different types, the limits of their occurrence, and the suitability of different waters for injection into the Healdton sands. Records of oil, gas, and water produced and of gas and water injected were studied to interpret the production behavior of the field and of certain individual leases. Theoretical calculations were made to predict the probable water-flood behavior and oil recovery, at constant water-injection rates, for individual sands on two leases.

This report presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that were circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its annual survey for 1958. Only plants that processed fuels of mineral origin were included; specifically, plants that manufactured briquets from charcoal were excluded. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured by mixing fine-sized fuels with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Both are used mainly for residential heating in the United States, but they differ considerably in appearance and physical characteristics. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped forms, 2 to 4 inches in length, weighing from 2 to 4 ounces. Pack-aged fuel consists of 3-to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. Briquets are made with a water-insoluble binder and are designed for rough handling and outdoor storage, whereas packaged fuel generally is made with a water-soluble binder and must be stored indoors to prevent deterioration. Briquet plants are relatively large and usually are at mines or in dock areas where large quantities of fine-sized fuels accumulate. Packaged-fuel plants are smaller and are used chiefly by retail dealers to convert locally available coal and coke fines into a product that can be burned efficiently in residential beating equipment.

Bureau of MinesThe Bureau of Mines studied the development of practical methods for recovering manganese from the extensive domestic resources of low-grade ores and open hearth slags. A one-step operation was developed on a laboratory scale in which manganese and iron compounds are treated with chlorine, volatilized, and separated by selective condensation. Manganese recoveries of 90 to nearly 100 percent were obtained from 9 of the most important domestic ores. Analyses of the manganese chloride product indicated that it was suit-able for aqueous electrolysis with little additional purification. A complete, integrated process that provides for the recovery and recycling of chlorine is proposed. This process appears to have distinct advantages over previously proposed manganese recovery processes, and, in sharp contrast to leaching procedures, it is applicable to practically any manganese-bearing material.

All the coal lands in Alaska are publicly owned, and the Federal Government is the principal consumer of coal. Therefore the Government has long been concerned with the wise utilization of the coal reserves of Alaska as well as with the availability of coals meeting the specifications for use in various Government installations. Coal preparation plays a key role in both of these areas of interest. The proper choice and operation of coal-washing equipment permits the mining of inferior deposits, minimizes waste of coal in preparation, and assures a prepared product of the best quality obtainable from the raw coal. Thus, from time to time, the Bureau of Mines has made washability examinations on most of the coals mined in Alaska. Generally, these examinations were made when new mines or new beds were opened, when construction of new preparation plants was being considered, or when the operation of existing plants could be improved by better knowledge of the raw coal. The purpose of this report is to bring together all the washability data available on the coals of the Matanuska Valley and Beluga River fields. The pattern of energy development for the rapidly growing Anchorage area is not clear at this time. Formerly coal was the only fuel available for large-scale space heating and power generation. More recently both oil and natural gas have entered the market, and several hydroelectric projects have been completed. Additional major hydroelectric projects are being considered. The role that will be played by coal in this competitive energy market is uncertain. However I if coal is the fuel used in future power plants or industrial installations, the information contained in this report will be useful in indicating the quality of the coals that can be supplied and in selecting proper preparation techniques.

The Bureau of Mines Mineral Industry Location System (MILS) is part of the computerized Minerals Availability System (MAS), a comprehensive data base of known mineral deposits. MILS, the location subsystem of MAS, has become widely used by the minerals industry and organizations with land-use planning and land management responsibilities. Information on more than 135,000 mineral locations and processing plants in the United States is contained in the data base. This information includes the name, location, mineral commodity, type of operation, bibliography, and cross-references for each property or prospect. Computer-drawn map overlays at various scales showing clustered MILS locations and computer printouts keyed to those overlays are available for inspection and reproduction at the Bureau's Field Operations Centers at Juneau, Alaska, Denver, Colo., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Spokane, Wash.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a project which addressed objectives concerning irrigation of native plants and inoculation of native plants with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi. The specific irrigation objectives were 1) to demonstrate the performance capabilities of solid-set irrigation for reclaimed mineland conditions, and 2) to demonstrate and evaluate three irrigation concepts under two separate water supply conditions. The VAM inoculations were to assess irrigation benefits in establishing VAM relationships for transplanted native species. Following the seasonal demonstration (May to September 1983) at 3 separate mine sites, conclusions were made that apply to the 6 state Western mining industry. The demonstration sites were located in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Positive conclusions were reached for 1) the use of soil moisture sampling with or without irrigation, and 2) the selection of solid-set sprinklers as the irrigation method. The conclusions about the irrigation concepts and strategy were mixed, due to the short-term (1 season) nature of the project. No conclusions could be reached for the VAM inoculations because the study time was too short.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing and grinding methods, and costs, at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The, cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Evans Pipe Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The presence in air of combustible cases and vapors can constitute an extremely serious explosion hazard. This hazard is even greater when explosive mixtures are confined under high pressures, as the pressure can become tremendous immediately before the container is ruptured. Because of its interest in safety in mining and allied industries, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated the flammability (explosibility) of various types of combustible atmospheres and has published Its findings. 4/ The explosibility of ethane has been studied, and its limits of flammability have been determined and published. The development of secondary recovery methods of stimulating oil production has intensified interest in the effect of high pressure on the explosibility of natural gas-air mixtures. The limits of flammability of natural gas-air mixtures at pressures ranging from 50 mm. Hg to 350 p.s.i.a. have been determined and published. More recently, the limits have been determined at pressures up to 3,00C p.s.i. in mixtures of natural gas-air-nitrogen.

The temperature of calcination and the resulting properties have been carefully investigated, and the most desirable calcines chosen for further investigation in the making of dolamite bricks. "INTRODUCTION The Pennsylvania anthracite industry produced 53 million net tons of anthracite during 1945. Fifty-one million tons was prepared for the commercial market (3), 3/ and 2 million tons (consisting of fine sizes) was used for colliery power consumption. Of the number of tons prepared for market, 17 million tons (33 1/3 percent) was prepared by the use of acid mine water treated with lime.Mine water from underground workings is pumped, drained, and stored in huge quantities. The mine-drainage systems in the anthracite region handle over 200 billion gallons of water annually, of which 150 billion gallons is pumped to the surface. More than 69 billion gallons of water is impounded in underground pools (1). Much of this water is employed for breaker use, dust-control installations; hydraulic backfilling, combatting mine fires; and aiding in the transportation of anthracite in gently dipping places where sheet iron is used Roos(4) estimates that 1,100 gallons of mine water is utilized in the preparation of anthracite mined."

A study of the consumption of reagents used in flotation gives useful data as to the market which employment of the flotation process creates for the manufacturers of the necessary chemicals and oils, and furnishes a useful clue to the trends in flotation practice influencing the choice of reagents used and the' extent to which new reagents are displacing less suitable older reagents. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to cover both of these phases of the consumption of reagents in flotation. Unfortunately, however, the data collected in tie various districts have not been equally informative; some operators have reported very completely both the consumption of reagents and the metallurgical results obtained therewith, while others were apparently unable to supply these figures in sufficient detail to meet the requirements of this investigation. RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION Table 1 gives the tonnage of ore treated by flotation, as reported. This table shows that flotation has been most largely used in the concentration of copper ores, next in complex lead-zinc ores, followed by lead ores, zinc ores, miscellaneous ores, and copper-iron ores.

In November 1940, the Bureau of Mines started exploration of the Three Blacks manganese properties - Black Diablo. in Pershing County and Black Eagle and Black .Rook in Lander County. The purpose was to determine possible reserves of manganese in the deposits. It is reported that a small amount of manganese was mined from the Black Diablo during World. War 1. No mining except that necessary for assessment work had been done on the Black Eagle. Shipments were being made from the Black Rock deposit to a concentrator at Vain, Nev., while the Bureau's development work was progressing. The Black Diablo deposit consists of one patented claim owned by the Charleston. Hill National Manes Co. Mary L. Clough of Winnemicca, Nev., president. The deposit is about 20 miles by a gravel and dirt road southwest of Golconda, a town on U. S. Highway 40 and the Southern Pacific Railway, Pershing County, Nev. The deposit lies at an elevation of about 5,600 feet on the east flank of the north-south trending Sonoma Range. The property was leased by Messrs. Hollis Chatwin, T. E. Chatwin, and R. H. Richards of Salt Lake City and Mammoth, Utah. The lessees installed a crusher and erected an ore bin below the open cut on the deposit and mined and, shipped about 5,000 tons of about 30 to 52 percent manganese ore to the Columbia Steel Co., Provo, Utah.

The impact of mining activities on the economy in both 1983 and 1984 was minimal. The most recent available data on the gross domestic product (GDP) indicated a level of $1.6 billion in 1983.2 The estimated value for the production of cement, aragonite, and salt was about $17 million in that year, down from the estimated $20 million in 1982. No data are available on the economic impact of the large petroleum refinery at Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, but it represents the major mineral-related activity. Cement production remained at only a fraction of the 800,000 tons per year of plant capacity. The offshore search for hydrocarbons continued in 1984, and some companies were about to enter the third year of seismic and geological surveying around Andros and Grand Bahamas Islands. Getty Oil (Bahamas) Co. Inc.; Breoco Ltd., a subsidiary of REO Development Corp. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Natomas Petroleum (Bahamas) Ltd. were the first companies to be awarded exploration licenses. These companies were committed to drilling at least one well before the end of the third exploration year. Other companies actively engaged in exploration included Exxon Corp., Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO), Chevron Oil Bahamas Ltd., and Esso Oil Bahamas Ltd. Geophysical Services Inc. (GSI) of Dallas, Texas, and Petroleum Services (Bahamas) Ltd. of Englewood, Colorado, ran another seismic survey line during 1984. This 1,533-mile line was in the Great Bahama Bank and Cay Sal Bank areas off the southeast Florida coast, and tied in with a 4,530-mile program GSI ran in 1981-82. These surveys were nonexclusive and publicly available through GSI.

"INTRODUCTION The Ahles iron mine, also known as the Pequest mine, in Warren County, N. J., was operated continuously for 15 years and was still in ore when it closed in 1916.Tie property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943. 3/ This examination led to an investigation of the deposits by the Bureau by diamond drilling two holes under the old workings to determine whether the extends downward.This report describes the work done at the Ahles mine by the Bureau and presents the data obtained.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. For a number of years there has been a very appreciable annual,, increase in the production and recovery of natural gas and natural-gas gasoline2 in the United States the latter product being used largely for blending with gasoline from petroleum in the production of motor fuel. On account of the increased amount of oil cracking in the production of gasoline and the accompanying increased percentage of low-boiling constituents in the resulting product, the specifications for the natural gasoline suitable for blending have been altered, that is, the amounts of propane and butane which it can contain have been limited. The result has been that large quantities of the latter materials are wasted because there has been no ready market for thorn in large quantities. Because of this wasteage and because it is probable that large quantities of there and similar materials will be produced in the near future us a result of the more general use of oil cracking processes, a study was made by the Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with the assistance of the Phillips Petroleum Company, of the suitability of these materials alone or in mixtures for use as gas enricher in the carburetion of water gas for city distribution. This investigation included: (a) A study of the properties of the low boiling members of the paraffin series including pentane with particular reference to their utilization as gases.

Since 1929, the Helium Activity of the Bureau of Mines has operated a helium-extraction plant at Amarillo, Tex. The natural gas that supplies this plant is obtained from the Cliffside geologic structure 12 miles to the northwest and over the years, has become known simply as "Cliffside gas," There is need for published data on the low-temperature phase equilibria of helium-bearing natural gases. To date, little information has been published on the equilibrium phase compositions, solution of helium in condensed natural gas, condensation characteristics, or equilibrium vaporization coefficients for methane, nitrogen, and helium in helium-containing systems. A windowed phase equilibrium apparatus (8)6 was used to obtain 105 equilibrium samples, representing 35 experimental conditions of condensed Cliffside gas at pressures of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 p.s.i.a. and temperatures from 0° to -270° F. Data on equilibrium vapor-liquid composition for Cliffside gas are presented in both tabular and graphic form and are discussed in detail to show their relationship to certain criteria that must be met to effect an efficient separation of helium from natural gas by means of low-temperature processes. Facts about condensation characteristics and solution of helium in the liquid phases are included, The important relationship of these two factors in decreasing the percentage of total helium lost by solution in the liquid phase is discussed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small--scale continuous tests of weathered mica pegmatite ores from Hart County, Ga., to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two modifications of the Bureau-developed anionic-cationic method were used. In one method, sodium carbonate and calcium lignin sulfonate were used for pH control and quartz depression; this method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.5 percent mica with a recovery of 91.4 percent. In the other modification, lime and sodium silicate were used with the calcium lignin sulfonate; concentrates containing 98.9 percent mica with a recovery of 86 percent were obtained.

The Bureau of Mines, with the cooperation of the Natural Gas Association of America, has conducted a study of leakage losses from natural-gas transmission lines. This study has shorn that surveys to determine the leakage from transmission lines lead to line repair work that not only aids in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show financial returns of large magnitude.2 In order to conduct the study, it was necessary to develop accurate and reliable methods of determining the actual leakage from pipe lines. METHODS OF TESTING Three methods that were developed and used to determine the leakage losses from high-pressure natural-gas transmission lines are: (1) The "pressure-drop" method, (2) The "metering-in and metering-out" method. (3) The "metering-in" method.

Electrostatic separation depends on a number of electrical and mechanical properties such as conductance, contact potential, dielectric constant, and particle shape. In routine testing it is desirable that the application of each of those properties be investigated. The conductance property is best utilized in a separator having an ionic field, whereas the contact potential requires a separator with a pure static field. Dielectric constant and particle shape also influence the response in these two fields. There is no separator on the market that can be adjusted for all these requirements. The separator described in this paper is satisfactory for this purpose and is provided with a dielectric electrode, which permits formation of high-intensity static fields.
