This Bureau of Mines report provides information on the first 49 water-flood projects (or units) in Nebraska. All injection was in the ?D? or "J" Cretaceous sands of western Nebraska. Specific data presented include location, map, discovery and development, water supply and injection, oil and water production, estimates of oil in place, primary and secondary recoveries. The 49 projects studied) including four dual-zone projects, should recover about 126.5 million barrels of oil. Eighty-six percent of the estimated oil had been recovered by the end of 1966. Abundant water was found near most projects.

This report sterns from a study undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the possibility of reducing filter-cake moisture by applying radiant heat. Suitable laboratory equipment was set up to study the effect of heat, heating time, proximity of the heater to the filter cake, cake thickness, and other variables related to the final filter-cake moisture. A minus-48-mesh coal slurry and application of heat for 60 seconds resulted in filter-cake moistures 5.6 to 13.2 percentage points lower than could be accomplished by filtration alone at 24 inches of Hg for 1-1/4-and 1 1/2-inch cake thickness, respectively. The moisture reduction can be attributed to the combined effect of lower fluid viscosity and evaporation.

The viscosity reduction effect of varied concentrations of leonardite (a naturally oxidized form of lignite) and leonardite-caustic on the rheological properties of a standard bentonite drilling fluid was studied and evaluated. The minimum plastic viscosity was found to occur at application rates of 4 lb of leonardite and 1.33 lb of caustic per barrel of drilling fluid. Leonardite-caustic treatment was not beneficial in treatment of salt-contaminated drilling fluids. Although filter loss rate was reduced; both yield values and gel strength were increased. Compared with other viscosity control agents) including quebracho) ligno-sulfonate) humic acids extracted from leonardite) as well as other reaction products of lignite) leonardite is less effective at low application rates but is an effective treating agent at rates of 2 Ib/bbl or more. Considering the comparable merits of the substance tested) the major factor in determining which agent to use should be based on cost consideration.

The Bureau of Mines studied lignite pulverization in a laboratory ring-roller mill. Both moisture content and the source of lignite were found to be important factors in pulverizer operation. Reduction of moisture content increased capacity and reduced power consumption, but predrying is more effective than in-the-mill drying in improving pulverizer operation. A combination predrier-crusher system produced significant improvements but other efforts to improve in-the-mill drying in the test mill were unsuccessful. Pulverization of frozen lignite was found to seriously reduce pulverizer capacity and increase power requirements.

The principal activities of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center (now Safety Research Center) during fiscal year 1968 (July 1, 1967, to June 30, 1968) are reviewed in part 1. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in other media. Part 3 describes a short study on the thermal decomposition of RDX and HMX not destined for publication elsewhere. The Bureau of Mines investigated a promising new technology for recovering A1203 from alunite to support the Bureau's alumina miniplant project. Results are presented for a study of the technical feasibility of treating alunite crushing and grinding reject fines for recovery of A1203. Alunite pellets having sufficient strength and resistance to degradation were produced by combining fines and coarse alunite with a KOH binder. The best pellets were prepared, in a laboratory pelletizer, by adding 1 pct KOH as a 5-pct solution to a mixture of 40 pct alunite dust (98 pct minus 65 mesh) and 60 pct coarse alunite (minus 20 plus 65 mesh). Calcines suitable for K2SO4 and A1203 recovery were produced by reducing dehydrated alunite pellets with sulfur in a laboratory shaft furnace for 4 h at 600° C, followed by air oxidation of the reduced calcine for 1 h at 600° C. This report presents design calculations, schematic diagrams, and discussions of the essential features of a proposed process research unit (PRU)--a continuous, 6-lb/h alunite shaft furnace--for studying the process.

This volume summarizes the contract work performed over a nine-month period by Westinghouse Electric Corporation on a Cost Plus Fixed Fee Contract for the Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines. The contract has been extended primarily to carry out improvements recommended for equipment produced under the contract for communicating with and locating trapped miners. These improvements will enhance the performance and utility of this equipment for operational use in actual mine emergencies. An additional complete set of the equipment will also he furnished to the Bureau under this extension. The work of the basic contract was to design, produce and test hardware in accordance with the Westinghouse response to a Bureau of Mines Request for Proposal which was based technically on recommendations of a study performed for the Bureau by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The accident experience of the California petroleum industry for 1927 was characterized by a decrease it .the number of fatalities. The year closed with a total of 41 fatal accidents, as compared with a total of 54 for the preceding year. 3 In percentage, the figure for 1927 represents a decrease of 24 per cent from that of 1926 and evidences the promising results of organized safety work, in which the industry in California has taken an absorbing interest. The percentage of decrease for 1927 is the largest recorded in any one year since the compilation of the fatality record in the California petroleum industry was begun. Although good progress has been made during the past few years, much remains to be done to reduce still further the human and economic waste caused by accidents. This review is intended to show the employee, as well as the employer, the proximate and contributing cause of accidents. To increase the value of the report, preventive measures in various instances are suggested, on the theory that accidents of a similar nature will occur unless remedial action in taken to remove the cause.

The Bureau of Mines is evaluating the thermodynamic properties of helium and helium-containing mixtures. Twenty-two compressibility runs were made with helium at 0° C and pressures to 800 atmospheres using a Burnett-type apparatus. Data from the 22 runs were treated simultaneously and as separate runs while different functional forms and weighting factors were used. A fourth-degree-polynomial equation in the pressure gives a statistically satisfactory representation of the compressibility factor when the data are treated simultaneously and a weighting factor of Pr-3/4 is used. The second virial coefficient of helium at 0° C from this investigation is 11.997±0.015 cm3 mole-1. The stated uncertainty is the random error standard deviation. Compressibility factors determined by this investigation are precise to better than 0.01 percent and are believed to be accurate to better than 0.02 percent.

The effect of small percentages of sodium chloride on the incendivity of permissible explosives was studied by the Bruceton up-and-down technique in gallery tests. Both the reduction in incendivity achieved by addition of sodium chloride and application of the test method to explosives evaluation are discussed. It is demonstrated that the up-and-down technique in gallery testing is suitable for distinguishing differences in incendivity between different explosive compositions and between lots of the same composition. The study also shows that addition of relatively small quantities of sodium chloride tends to reduce the incendivity of explosives to firedamp, but addition of sodium chloride cannot insure reduced incendivity. Any improvement attributable to the salt can be counteracted by undefined variations in the explosive. The need for experimental investigations of a number of factors that may affect the safety of permissible explosives is emphasized. Spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides and resultant fires are serious problems in underground mines. The Bureau of Mines has con-ducted fundamental thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) research to deter-mine the mechanisms and factors governing the rate of low-temperature pyrite oxidation, and to identify possible inhibitors to spontaneous oxidation and combustion. The mechanism of low-temperature pyrite oxidation was found to be topochemical, meaning that the oxidation process is controlled by the chemical reaction at the interface between pyrite (FeS2) and iron sulfate (FeS04)' An activation energy of 8.9 kcal/mol FeS2 was obtained for oxidation of minus 500-mesh pyrite in an atmosphere of 60 vol pct water vapor and 40 vol pct . Water-vapor content of the atmosphere was found to be the critical factor in the rate of spontaneous oxidation of pyrite, with a water-vapor content greater than 20 vol pct needed for accelerated oxidation. An atmosphere of pure oxygen resulted in negligible oxidation. The rate of pyrite oxidation is also greatly affected by the particle size of pyrite. Pyrite-oxidation rate increased drastically for particles less than 40 ~m. Room-temperature pyrophoric behavior was observed for freshly ground unoxidized pyrite (55 pct minus 5 ~m) upon exposure to air. Addition of water-adsorbing materials such as activated alumina (Alz03) decreased the rate of pyrite oxidation.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of Bureau of Mines investigations of iron ores near Scappoose, Columbia County, Oreg. during 1942, occurrences of laterite were noted in road cuts and outcrops at many localities in the county. In 1944, the State of Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries completed a preliminary examination of alumina-iron-bearing laterite occurrences in Washington County north of Hillsboro, Oreg.3/ Their report suggested that the lateritic material might be amenable to treatment by the Pederson process for the commercial production of iron and alumina. In order to determine the extent and character of some of the reported lateritic occurrences, the Bureau conducted preliminary explorations in Columbia County near St. Helens, Oreg., from January through June 1945. Almost simultaneously the Alcoa Mining Co. began to explore nearby areas. Their work was continued and expanded after the Bureau's work had been discontinued. This report presents the data obtained from the exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral re¬sources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Exploration of hidden mineral deposits becomes increasingly important as known ore reserves are depleted. The primary objective in any exploratory program is to obtain enough reliable information to evaluate accurately the potential of the mineral deposit. Constant improvement in equipment and technique has established drilling as one of the most valuable methods of exploration. This paper presents the results of studies of several drilling methods currently used in the search for uranium deposits in sedimentary formations from surface drill sites. Also presented is a description of drilling with wire-line equipment from an underground location in metamorphic rocks. The studies were conducted in the Colorado Plateau area and in northwestern New Mexico and Wyoming. Statements of a general nature pertain to conditions or situations existent in those areas.

This report is the 17th of a series originally issued annually, and more recently bienially, to acquaint the reader with the work of the Division of Explosives Technology, Federal Bureau of Mines. It differs from preceding reports in that its material is presented in two parts: Part I reviews briefly the overall activities of the Division during fiscal years 1955 and 1956;4/ part II presents in abstract form, the publications of the Division during that period. As it is not unusual for research completed in the course of one report period to be published only in the following period, the Bureau believes that the present approach will give a more accurate presentation of its work for the period considered. The Bureau hopes too, that the somewhat more concise presentation will prove convenient to the reader.5/ PART I -RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGIC ACTIVITIES The activities of the Division during fiscal years 1955 and 1956 reflected the steadily growing preoccupation with factors affecting the safety of permissible explosives and those affecting the tests used for approval of these explosives. "A recent premature explosion in a quarry that resulted in the death of nine men and the injury of several others, was directly traceable to a spark from a steam-shovel working under the face directly in front of the hole being loaded. This accident and similar accidents on record in the Bureau of Mines indicates the necessity for pointing out the dangers in quarries of explosives being ignited by sparks emitted from steam shovels and locomotives, and making recommendations for greater safety.Many premature explosions of which the following are examples, have resulted from sparks, both from steam shovels and passing locomotives. (A) The premature explosion occurred during August, 1920 at a limestone quarry, in a 100-foot drill hole, loaded with 1000 pounds of high-grade nitroglycerin and gelatin dynamites. This hole had been loaded with 500 pounds of 75 per cent strength gelatin dynamite, 300 pounds of 60 per cent straight nitroglycerin dynamite, and 200 pounds of 50 per cent straight nitro¬glycerin dynamite; but no steaming had been placed in the hole. The powderman loading the hole saw the spark enter the hole and was able to run a short distance before the explosion took place, thus escaping serious injury. The explosion of this first hole was transmitted to nearby hole similarly charged. The fall of rocks from these two holes buried the steam shovel and some of the gang of men working around it.(B) In September, 1909, in the Canal Zone, a steam shovel uncovered a misfired charge of dynamite. While the dynamite was being picked up the steam shovel continued working nearby. A spark from the shovel set fire to some loose dynamite spilled on the ground from the troken cartridges. This fire was transmitted to a hole which was being loaded close by and caused a premature explosion. One man was injured."

This report summarizes 10 selected Bureau of Mines research contract reports produced from 1970 to 1980 which consist largely of geologic studies of coal mine roof support problems. Significant highlights from the contract final reports are discussed and presented in practical terms. The selected reports focus on the Appalachian and Illinois coal mining regions. In the Appalachian coal region, two geologic structures, roof rolls and slickensides, predominate over all structures as features that directly contribute to roof falls. Studies of these and other structures are reviewed, and improved methods of utilizing drill core and core logs to prepare hazard maps are presented. Among the reports described are several on the weakening effects of moisture on shale roof, as determined from both laboratory and underground measurements, and an assessment of air tempering as a humidity-control method. Also summarized are findings concerning the time lapse between roof exposure and permanent support installation as a factor in the effectiveness of roof bolting.

The mode of propagation of explosions through narrow passages is important for understanding flameproofed equipment employed in mines. Narrow channels have been used in this investigation that connected between a small explosion chamber and a large chamber containing fuel-air mixture. The oxygen index of the mixture in the small chamber was determined which caused an explosion in the outer chamber. Preliminary measurements have already been given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5457 and suggested that) flames do not pass through narrow channels. The hot, burned gases from the explosion in the small chamber, however, are able to ignite the mixture in the large chamber by a process of hot-gas ignition. Systematic measurements are reported in the present paper that cover the influence of channel length and diameter and the properties of the gas mixtures in the large chamber on the transmission of explosions. The influence of such properties as quenching diameter and flame temperature is also discussed. This paper concludes the work on this problem and presents a theory that describes in detail parameters that influence transmission of explosions through narrow channels. This report presents the results of a research and development program in recovering waste-rolling oils conducted by the Bethlehem Steel Co., before 1954 at its Sparrows Point plant, Sparrow Point, Md., with the cooperation of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, College Park, Md. The objective of the program was twofold: First, to recover oil for reuse in the plant; and second, to stop pollution, by oil, of the stream and harbor areas in the immediate vicinity of the plant. The sequence of the investigations was laboratory and pilot plant studies on sedimentation, simple aeration, and flotation for the separation of oil and water; and construction of a production unit using standard flotation equipment. This work was only preliminary for the Bethlehem Steel Co. and it has continued research on this problem. Recent progress indicates that new, improved processes will soon replace the flotation units described in this report. The first efforts to separate oil and water by simple sedimentation were unsuccessful. To establish the cause of this failure, microscope examinations and measurements were made on cold-reduction rolling mill cooling-water effluents containing oil in suspension. It was discovered that an average oil globule, held in suspension, was only 0.001 inch in diameter and would not coagulate with other globules for normal sedimentation at room temperature. The next step in the sequence of studies was to coagulate the oil suspension by simple aeration with air under slight pressure. The aeration methods studied were effective in removing up to 68 percent of the total oil but were approaching flotation in principle. The final investigation of the series was flotation of the oil in conventional laboratory-size flotation cells. The small-bubble method, without reagents, floated up to 89 percent of the total oil held in suspension and was the process selected for pilot-plant development.

"The kaolin deposits of Aiken County, South Carolina (fig. 1), have been worked continuously since 1852. It has been long known that the deposits contain a high percentage of alumina and that large reserves exist. These facts led to the early selection of this area for examination in the search by the Bureau of Mines for high-alumina clays. An exploratory program was started by the Bureau, and drilling was carried on from June 27, 1942, to October 31, 1942.The kaolin-bearing district occupies an area approximately 25 miles long and 11 miles wide, running northeast, with its center at Aiken, S. C. (fig. 1). Within this district, a triangular area bounded by Horse Creek, Silver Bluff Road, and Hamburg Road was roughly prospected by boring 43 machine and 12 hand holes. As a result of the data obtained, a final smaller area was chosen for more systematic prospecting. This area is bounded by Pine Log, Tewkesbury, Silver Bluff, and Craig Sawmill Roads and covers about 4,000 acres.Mineral exploration agreements covering 11,272 acres were signed by 35 property owners, and 11,956 feet was drilled in 200 holes on these properties.The Bureau of Mines exploration work in the district has indicated 19,514,000 short tons of kaolin, of which approximately 10,000,000 tons would average over 35 percent alumina.The tonnages and grades of kaolin developed by this exploration are tabulated below.All grades of this kaolin average approximately 2 percent Fe203 and 1.5 percent Ti02.This project was under the general supervision of J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-Metals Mining Section of the Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, until July 1942. The -project was then under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and later Rowe McCrae, consecutively district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. The final report was prepared, under the general supervision of V..J. Lynch, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division, by William A.
