MERCURY, also widely known as quicksilver, ranks tenth in quantity in world output of nonferrous metals. However, its unusual and desirable combination of properties- liquid liquidity at ordinary temperatures, high density, uniform volume expansion, electrical conductivity, ability to alloy readily, high surface tension, chemical stability, and toxicity of its compounds -gives mercury an industrial and military importance out of proportion to the small physical size of the production industry. Although mercury has been known and used for over 20 centuries, until the 16th century consumption was small and chiefly in medicine. Since then mercury's applications have paralleled scientific advancements, kind current principal uses of mercury are in electrical apparatus, industrial and control instruments, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and the electrolytic prepa¬ration of chlorine and caustic soda. Other materials may be substituted for mercury in come applications; yet, for those uses that require mercury's unusual combination of physical and chemical properties, there is no ideal substitute.

This report describes in detail the circuitry used in the Automated Time Domain Reflectometry System and the testing and modification done to the system to improve the units performance and consistency. The analog ATDR software is described and explained in detail. Also attempts to implement the same Assembly Language program in a higher level language (PLM) are documented along `h two versions of the PLM program - one which uses a data filtering approach to limit noise and another which uses data averaging to reduce noise. The field testing of the analog and digital ATDR units is described along with the hardware modifications that resulted. The analog unit has been abandoned and the digital unit adopted for most field tests. Tests indicate that the digital units are much more consistent and less confusing for the lay-person to operate. The results indicate that the it can locate an abnormality in a test cable to within 5% of the true location (provided the cable phase velocity is known). The units can consistently locate shunt type faults which are less than 300 ohms and series type faults which are greater than 30 ohms.

Zirconium has possible use in industry where severe corrosion conditions are encountered because it resists attack from a variety of corrosive environments. However, very little experimental testing has been done to evaluate the corrosion behavior of zirconium when simultaneously subjected to high tensile stresses and exposed to corrosive environments. This investigation was initiated for an evaluation test, but was limited to environments consisting of ferric chloride solutions which were known to attack zirconium and were shown to promote stress-corrosion cracking in preliminary tests. Tests for cracking susceptibility were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to show the effect of stress, solution concentration, air aeration of solution, and the method of mechanical processing. Tensile stress was applied to the specimens by a constant-load method which proved more reliable than a constant-strain method.

Heat contents were measured for Na2CaSi04 and Na2Ca2S02 between 298° and 1,300° K, for Na2Ca2Si309 between 298° and 1,500° K, and for Na4CaSi3O9 between 298° and 1,350° K. Copper-block drop calorimetry was employed. Reversible, first-order transitions were found for Na2CaSi04 and Na2Ca2Si309. The transition for Na2CaSi04 is at 830° K with a heat absorption of 160 cal/mole; that for Na2CagSi309 occurs at 750° K with a heat absorption of 1,550 cal/mole. Results for the other two silicates showed no irregularities. A table of heat content and entropy increments above 298.15° K and heat con-tent equations are included for use in thermodynamic calculations.

The Brandon lignite is a small deposit of very low rank coal near the village of Forestdale in the town of Brandon, Vt. It occurs in association with other sediments, principally sands and silts. This lignitic coal has attracted considerable scientific interest since the middle of the 19th century because of the abundance of fossils in the sediment and the rarity of lignite in New England. A cooperative investigation has been developed by E. S. Barghoorn, W. Spackman, and the author in which different phases of the problem have been worked on in a coordinated research program. This paper presents results of an investigation of the very abundant fossil pollen and spores and some other microfossils of the deposit. The studies on which this manuscript is based were made in large part at Harvard University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Ph. D. degree.

This report documents the program conducted to demonstrate the application of a flywheel-powered propulsion system to underground mining shuttle cars. Such application can replace the present electrical trailing cable common to most shuttle cars and thereby eliminate those safety hazards, maintenance problems, and haulage route limitations inherent in the trailing cable. Described are the activities undertaken to specify and design a flywheel of optimum size, shape, and material; to identify the best concepts of input and output systems; and to achieve installation of the power package into a shuttle car. The resultant Flywheel-Powered Shuttle Car is an FMC Model 6L shuttle car, 6-ton capacity, 20-ton gross vehicle weight, powered by a flywheel system with 4.5-kilowatt-hour usable energy. The completed vehicle was delivered to the Bureau of Mines in Bruceton, Pennsylvania, for testing and evaluation.

"Mica" is a group name for a number of orthosilicates of aluminum with magnesium, ferrous iron, and the alkalies. They are characterized by their high reflection and a basal cleavage so well developed that they can be split into exceedingly thin laminae, which are more or less tough, elastic, and transparent, according to variety. Barium, manganese, lithium, chromium, titanium, boron, and ferric iron occur in same varieties. Eight distinct species of true mica, which appear in the following table, are recognized by mineralogists, but only the first five are of commercial importance. "In this paper, the current status of respirable dust control in coal mine atmospheres is presented. The advancements in the engineering control of dust generation and entrainment, and of reducing the exposures are summarized. The results of the Health Surveillance Program are briefly reviewed. The results of research conducted in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust are presented. The 1995 NIOSH criteria document on respirable coal mine dust is briefly reviewed. The fundamental scientific and engineering issues in need of research are discussed. A detailed bibliography is attached.IntroductionFor coal mines in the United States, the current permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 2mg/m3MRE-equivalent concentration (an 8-hour TWA concentration measured gravimetrically) was established by Public Law 91-173: the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety of 1969 (the 1969 Coal Act). This standard is reduced when the respirable quartz content in the dust sample exceeds 5%; the reduced standard in mglm3 is obtained by dividing 10 by the percent quartz. The OSHA and ACGIB PEL for respirable coal mine dust is also 2 mg/m3 , and OSHA PEL for respirable quartz is 100 µg/m3 . The 1969 Coal Act also prescribed two activities in the Coal Mine Respirable Dust Sampling Program and the National Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program n to control respirable dust in mines, and the coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) among the coal miners.There are three principal methods by which personal exposures to respirable dust are controlled. The first is engineering control where the aim is to reduce the concentration in the mine atmosphere to or below the mandated level. The second is the provision of personal protective devices which allow the miner to work in dusty atmospheres without increasing personal exposure. The third is the use of administrative controls where the miner's exposure is controlled through work schedules and procedures to keep miner exposure at or under the mandated levels. The 1969 Coal Act specifically prohibits the use of respirators in lieu of environmental control. The compliance sampling program essentially does not give any credit to the use of administrative controls."

This final report describes the work accomplished under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract #H0242011 - "Feasibility of Automated Rail Haulage Systems in Underground Coal Mines." The report outlines the base for the development and evaluation of automated rail haulage systems in terms of the service requirements for haulage systems in underground coal mines, and of the performance of existing haulage systems. A generalized automated rail haulage system concept is defined. A safety impact analysis of automating the mainline portion of the underground system indicates a 50% reduction in injuries and fatalities. A cost effectiveness (over the total life cycle) study for the system indicates a cost benefit can be obtained from implementing an automated rail system. The design specifications for the total automated rail haulage system - including subsystems and components -are developed, and the equipment types and general design approaches evaluated, with selections outlined. A detailed conceptual design for a prototype automated system is described. Conclusions and recommendations are presented, and a program plan devised for implementing a proto-type automated rail haulage system demonstration in an operating underground coal mine by 1980.

According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, as of January 1, 1934, there were 591 completed refineries in the United States, an increase of 86 ever the total reported at the beginning of 1933 and the largest total ever recorded. It should be noted that the 1934 total, although large, probably does not include more than half of the "pot-still" plants of 1 barrel to 50 barrels daily capacity which have sprung up within the last 2 or 3 years and about which very little information is available. However, the combined operations of these snail refineries are of negligible importance as altogether they refine less crude than one plant of average size. Of the completed plants, 454 were operating on January 1, 1934 and 137 were shut down. In addition, 13 refineries were under construction on January 1, 1934. Compared with the previous year these data indicate a marked increase in the number of operating plants, little change in the number of inoperative plants, but a decline in' the number being built. The material gain in the number of operating plants resulted primarily from the construction off approximately 25 refineries, averaging about 100 barrels capacity in the Kooky Mountain district, as well as from the addition of about 20 plants in the East Texas field.

Oil shales differ from coals in that they contain less carbonaceous material, convertible to volatile hydrocarbons, and more inorganic rock. In all pre-commercial oil shale development, involving extensive full scale mining operations, there have been no explosions. However, large scale mine tests with oil shale dusts by the Bureau of fines showed that propagating explosions could be induced under certain circumstances. Laboratory tests were conducted on a broad spectrum of oil shale dusts to define chemical properties and to seek correlations with subsequently determined fire and explosivity properties. These latter properties, indicative of safety hazards, increased as the Fischer assay oil yield of the dusts increased and as particle size decreased. Laboratory data were used to relate fire and explosivity properties of oil shales to those of coals and other carbonaceous materials and to assist in the identification and evaluation of potential hazardous situations which may be encountered in oil shale mining and processing.

This progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines covers 10 mines. It presents comparative costs for drilling with conventional and detachable bits, describes the reconditioning of drill steel, and gives various data on rock drilling at these particular mines. Reports to follow will include similar data on drilling at other metal mines in the United States. "INTRODUCTION Sponge iron has been made commercially since 1912 at a Swedish ceramic plant; and the product, known as Swedish disk—type sagger sponge iron, has an excellent reputation as a superior furnace feed wherever high—grade steels are made. The general procedure for making brickyard sponge iron was described frequently in Swedish technical journals prior to 1932 and at that time consisted in filling clay refractory containers, called saggers, with a super-concentrate of Gellivare magnetite plus the necessary amount of solid reducing agent and desulfurizer and then firing in a Hoffmann ring furnace, as used in the ceramic industry.The early Swedish publications describe two types of brickyard sponge iron: (1) An inferior high-sulfur product obtained by mixing the ore and reducing agent, and (2) a high-grade low-sulfur product in the form of coherent disks 7 to 9 inches in diameter and 1 to 1-1/2 inches thick made by the saggers with alternate layers of solid-fuel reducr and of uniaxed ore."

Significant amounts of cobalt, a strategic and critical metal, are present in readily accessible spent copper leach solutions. For example, recovery of cobalt at two major u.S. copper operations could produce about 1,300,000 lb Co annually, about 13 pct of domestic consumption. However, techniques such as solvent extraction and precipitation have not proven cost effective in separating and recovering the cobalt from these low-grade domestic sources. The Bureau of Mines has devised a procedure using a chelating ion-exchange resin to extract cobalt from a pH 3.0 copper leach solution containing 30 mg/L Co. Cyclic tests in 4-ft-high by 1-in-diam columns gave an average cobalt extraction of 95 pct when 65 bed volumes of solu-tion were processed at a flow rate of 4 gpm/ft2 of resin area. After an impurity scrub, eluates contained, in grams per liter, 0.4 Co, 0.2 Ni, <0.001 Cu, 1.3 Fe, 2.8 Zn, and 0.008 AI. Solvent extraction procedures to remove impurities, reject nickel, and concentrate cobalt produced a cobalt sulfate solution containing 80 g/L Co, 0.05 g/L Ni, and not more than 1 mg/L Cu, Fe, Zn, or AI. Based on data from commercial electro-winning operations, this solution appears suitable for production of metallic cobalt.

Because of the danger to life and property in a coal mine if an oil or natural gas well should be accidentally intersected during mining operations, certain precautionary measures should be carried out prior to entering previously unmined areas. The locations of all wells both at the surface and at the depth of the coalbed should be accurately determined. The condition of the well should be learned from surface observations, and more importantly, from subsurface examination by geophysical logging devices where possible. It is also desirable to learn the physical properties of the hydrocarbon-bearing rock formation and the hydrocarbon fluids. The major hazard presented by oil or natural gas wells to mining operations is that of explosion and fire due to the rapid release of gas into the mine atmosphere. Wellbore pressure, the principal index of danger, should be determined by one or more of the methods described and by a service company such as those listed in the appendix. Because of high pressures involved and the consequent hazard, much emphasis has been placed on underground storage of natural gas in areas containing minable coalbeds. Maps are shown of the principal coal producing areas and the locations of currently active gas storage reservoirs. A checklist has been included of factors to be considered when mining coal in an area where oil or gas wells exist.

When the United States Geological Survey began operations at the coal-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, it had already outlined a comprehensive plan for the systematic study of coals, lignites, and other mineral fuels with reference to their suitability for particular purposes and the methods by which they could be utilized most efficiently. Recognizing the need of information on the relative economy of producer gas as compared with steam for power purposes and the lack of comparable tests of American coals in the gas producer, the Geological Survey undertook investigations of the merits of different coals as producer fuel for the purpose of promoting efficiency in the utilization of the nation's fuel supplies. These investigations were carried on at St. Louis, Mo., and, later, at Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburg, Pa. The aet of Congress approved May 16, 1910, transferred the fueltesting work being carried on by the Geological Survey to the Bureau of Mines. This bureau is conducting producer-gas tests at P~ttsburg, Pa., and is publishing and distributing reports relating to all the fuel tests made by the Survey. These investigations into the possibility of generating producer gas in a commercial way for power purposes from the various fuels of the country have been associated with steaming, briquetting, coking, and other tests, all of which supplemented an examination into the nature, extent, and distribution of the fuels. The tests have all been made with carefully selected representative samples and carload lots of materials procured specially for the purpose by experienced collectors.

This report describes the development and operation by the Bureau of Mines of a pilot plant designed for using high-volatile A bituminous coal-in-water suspensions as a source of preheated coal and superheated steam in the pressure gasification of coal with oxygen. Figure 1 on page 2 is a block diagram of the integrated gasification process, in which a total of 70 tons of coal was fed from slurry and gasified. The present work included (1) development of equipment and methods both for mixing pulverized coal and water to produce slurry and for pumping and metering the slurry at gasification pressure; (2) development of equipment for heating the flowing slurry and, because slurry that can be pumped produces more steam than is necessary as a gasification reactant, developing equipment for removing and metering the excess steam; and (3) demonstration of the process under actual gasifier operating conditions, at a coal rate of about 800 pounds per hour and gasification pressures in the range 100 to 300 pounds per square inch gage. By using the forced-convection principle, a flow of slurry made from a caking, high-volatile A bituminous coal can be continuously heated to 600° F. in a coil-type heater. The flow rate and concentration of the slurry and the temperature gradient along the length of the heating coil must be closely controlled. In a radiant-type heater, involuntary reductions in flow rate, even momentary, can lead to coking and plugging of the heater coil.
