This paper, which is one of a group presented by the United States Bureau of Mines covering mining practice in different districts, deals in particular with the methods employed in mining the horizontal type of zinc-lead orebodies of the West Baxter area of the Tri-State zinc and lead district. These orebodies, locally termed "sheet-ground" bodies, with their relatively low working faces and low tenor of zinc and lead, require changes in the mining practice which is used in the balance of the district. In addition to the general mining methods, this paper also describes the system of hand sorting employed prior to the direct milling of the ore. The Hartley mine is situated mile west of Baxter Springs, Kans., as indicated in Figure 1. Its general outline and the location of the shafts with respect to the milling plant are shown in Figure 2.

This paper is the second and concluding report of the results of the twenty-fourth semiannual survey made by the Bureau of Mines of motor gasoline marketed in the United states. The first report on this 1931 survey gave the results of the examination of the gasoline samples in accordance with the new Federal specification for United States Government Motor Gasoline. The present paper reports results of the examination of the gasolines for color, doctor test gravity, end point, per cent recovered copper-dish gum, and steam-oven gum. The retail price and the tax at the time each sample was taken are also reported.

Thallium is one of the rarer metals that has come into commercial importance in recent years. Although the element was first reported by Crookes in seleniferous deposits in lead chambers of a sulfuric acid plant in the Harz Mountains of Germany, it had no commercial significance until about 190O because of the high cost of extraction. Thallium occurs widely in the earth's crust but is found in such low concentrations that it is recovered only as a byproduct from processing other elements. There are no domestic ores of thallium; the entire output in this country is supplied by the American Smelting & Refining Co. as a byproduct of its cadmium operations at Globe, Colo. Thallium also is recovered from the flue dusts of sulfuric acid works in which thallium-bearing materials are used and as a byproduct of the lithopone industry. This paper describes methods for recovery of thallium from 'white arsenic" and lead Cottrell-precipitator dust of the American Smelting & Refining Co., lead smelter, Murray, Utah. Owing to an enlarged market for thallium because of increased military requirements and expanded peacetime uses, the Salt Lake Station of the Bureau of Mines surveyed the occurrence of thallium in ores, concentrates, and smelter products from all parts of the nation and found the most promising source was certain smelter products of the American Smelting & Refining Co. plant, Murray, Utah. Much of the thallium was being lost in marketed arsenic products; therefore, this investigation was undertaken to develop methods for recovering the thallium.

It discusses fundamental theory and the vital aspects to be considered in planning and designing mine electrical power systems. The report is divided into three major sections. The first presents the history of electricity in mining and the fundamentals of electrical phenomena and components. The second focuses on power-system components: motors, grounding systems, cables, and protective equipment and devices. The final section includes mine power-center equipment, switchhouses and substations, batteries, and mine maintenance.

Probably no year in the history of the United States showed greater progress in the mineral industries than 1916. Although this progress was undoubtedly stimulated by the war in Europe, which caused extremely high prices for some of the metals, yet the fact remains that mining is being regarded more as a business and less as a speculation, and the benefits of business methods are becoming evident. Practices that were almost universal a few years ago have been largely abolished, the mining public has been brought to recognize the folly of wasteful and dangerous methods, and there is a gratifying unanimity of opinion in regard to the conservation of life and health, as well as of our mineral resources. The people of the United States realize more fully than ever before the extent and value of the country's mineral resources and the possibilities that await intelligent and well-directed efforts at utilization. In the past, economic reasons caused deposits of valuable metals and industrial materials to lie idle; commercial reasons, many of them not truly economic, led to the waste of valuable constituents in many ores; the recovery of minerals from the ground was too often incomplete and accompanied by uncalculated loss; and the treatment of ores in mills and smelters saved altogether too Iowa proportion of the metals sought. Now better methods are being tried on every hand, and the unparalleled record of the year is largely due to the success of these efforts. According to the preliminary estimates of the United States Geological Survey the output of metals and minerals in this country in the calendar year 1916 had a total gross value of slightly more than $3,000,000,000. Overloaded blastholes and insufficient stemming are major factors in flyrock accidents at surface metal and non-metal mines, Accurate measurement of blasthole depth, stemming height, and water depth would reduce the overload and the probability of blow-out, flyrock, excessive ground vibration, and airblast. Problems result because current measuring systems are inaccurate and often difficult to used A literature survey determined measurement techniques and blasting parameters prior to 1970. Similar data were gathered for current practices in 11 iron mines, 30 copper mines, and 92 quarries. Most operations used a cloth tape to measure borehole depth and stemming height; approximately 10% of the operations had dry blastholes. Alternate measurement techniques were evaluated and discussed. Candidate measuring techniques with best potential for improvement over the present weighted tape method are disposable tapes or string chains, automated readout tapes, modified sludge level indicators and acoustic resonance methods.

Bituminous coal mining in the United States is currently experiencing a period of rapid growth which began in the early 1960's. Future demands are conservatively predicted to rise to 700 million tons by 1980 and to anywhere between 1 to 3 billion tons by the turn of the century. This means a continuous expansion of coal production by a factor of at least two can be expected before the end of the century. Over the last few years, production from underground mining has decreased; yet it is about 50% of the total coal output. In the absence of any discovery of near surface coal deposits, and even after conceding that some deeper deposits can be surface mined with changes in technology it can be reasonably assumed that coal production from underground will continue to play an important part in solving the energy crisis.

This report describes the new Bureau of Mines Core Repository System (CORES) and presents the methods for selecting, processing, and storing physical samples and descriptive data for future reference by earth scientists. The system preserves splits of chip samples and longitudinally sliced segments of core. A records retrieval system provides for storage of data on microfilm and magnetic tapes and uses the keysort parameters of location and commodity for the identification of data.

This report presents the results of an investigation in Which the chloroform solubilities of coals and chars are related to rank, temperature of thermal treatment, time at a given temperature, vacuum thermal treatment, plasticity, oxidation, blending, and mass spectral analyses and molecular weights of the extracts. It was found that the quantity of chloroform extract obtained from chars can be altered by creating a vacuum above the charge during preparation of the char, increasing the time at temperatures within the plastic temperature range, and by utilizing different rates of heating to attain a given temperature. Relationships found between the chloroform solubilities of chars produced at temperatures within the plastic temperature range and the relative fluidities in this temperature range indicate that the chloroform-soluble portion of the char is a significant component of the plastic mass. Chloroform-extract yields from chars made from blends of coals cannot be calculated from chloroform-extract yields obtained from chars made from the component coals.

The investigations described in this bulletin are confined to a study of the washing characteristics of bituminous coals. The major part of the work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division between 1918 and 1924, in accordance with the provisions of an agreement between these agencies. The washing characteristics of coals from many of the important coal-producing fields of the Eastern and Central States were examined. The coals of the Pacific Northwest States and Alaska have been studied separately by McMillan and Bird of the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Seattle in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington.2 OBJECT OF INVESTIGATION The object of the investigation of coal preparation by the Bureau of Mines has been to promote the production of better prepared coal and to facilitate the correct selection and design of coal-preparation plants by obtaining as complete information as possible regarding the washability of the various types of American coals and the treatment best suited to each. In addition, some attention has been given to the development of new methods of washing coal. The work naturally divides itself into three rather distinct steps: (1) Development of a systematic method of examining and testing a coal; (2) classification of the American coals on a basis of the occurrence of the impurities associated with the coal in the beds; (3) examination of one or more representative coals of each type.

"INTRODUCTION The introduction of mechanized pining in coal mines, which has speeded loading, has emphasized the importance of efficient underground transportation systems. The purpose of this investigation is to study and analyze various systems now in use, and to derive conclusions therefrom. This report may be helpful to operators who are planning new systems of transportation or who are revising present systems to increase their efficiency. This paper is the first of a series on this subject and describes some systems of transportation utilizing rail haulage.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe information used in preparing this report was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the officials of the companies whose mines wore studied. This report presents experimental data on the propagation of explosion- generated strain pulses in rock. Tests were performed in 5 different rock types, employing 10 different types of explosives. Charge sizes ranged from 0.5 to 50 pounds, and travel distances ranged from 2.5 to 70 feet. Analysis of the data shows that the experimental peak strain data satisfy an exponential decay propagation law of the form: ?R/W1/3 = Ke ?aR/W1/3. For a particular rock, parameter K is a linear function of the calculated detonation pressure or the calculated energy density of the explosive. For a particular explosive, K is a linear function of the elastic parameter of the rock, p2, a result, which is at variance with elastic theory. The absorption constant, a, is independent of type of explosive but dependent upon rock type. However, no definite relation between a and the physical properties of the rock could be established.

As part of safety and stability studies at three underground mines in the United States, researchers installed earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges in cemented rockfill to measure stress and strain changes as mining progressed and the rockfill was loaded. Data from these instruments were used to calculate the in situ modulus of the rockfill for two of the mines. A three-dimensional numerical model of a cemented rockfill cap was validated with data from extensometers anchored in the mine roof and sill; this model was then used to estimate deformation modulus at the third mine because the earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges recorded negligible changes. Rockfill binder used at these mines ranged from 4 to 8 per cent of the dry components by weight, the water-to-cement ratio was from 0.42 to1.0, and the largest aggregate size in the three mixes ranged from 5 to12 cm (2 to 4.7 in). The range of the calculated in situ deformation modulus values was large, but as expected, it was bracketed by modulus values for cemented tailings and roller-compacted concrete with similar cement contents and water-to-cement ratios. Accurate measurement of workplace respirable dust concentration is an essential step in eliminating lung disease in any occupational setting. In the United States (U.S.) coal mining industry, this measurement process has relied upon a personal sampler that includes a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver (DO) nylon cyclone operated at a flow rate of 2.0 L min-1 to collect a respirable dust sample. Dust concentrations measured with this sampler are multiplied by 1.38, which was empirically derived, to convert them to measurements approximating the United Kingdom British Medical Research Council (BMRC) definition of respirable dust upon which the health effects of coal mine dust are based. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) subsequently refined the respirable dust definition and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 1995 Criteria for a Recommended Standard presented a conversion multiplier of 0.857 to apply to the 2.0 L min-' DO (in addition to thel.38 multiplier) to obtain equivalent ISO concentrations, as approximated by the 1.7 L min-1 DO. However, the conversion multiplier 0.857 was derived indirectly from a limited size distribution data set rather than a direct comparison of the DO samplers. The present analysis focuses on providing a more accurate conversion multiplier derived from direct comparisons of the 2.0 L min-1 (with 1.38 BMRC equivalency multiplier) and 1.7 L min-1 DO cyclones. A weighted linear regression analysis of this database suggests that a more accurate estimate of the conversion multiplier is 0.815.

Of the sand and miscellaneous silica produced in the United States , ordinary sand and gravel are , of course , the most important, at least as regards volume of output . The building- construction industry absorbs approximately 75 per cent of the total value of all quartz and silica , as shown in Table 2 of Quartz and Silica, Part I, under "General summary . " Because of their unusual physical properties tripoli and diatomite find extremely wide uses in industry, and as the commercial deposits of these ninerals , especially tripoli , are scattered, large quantities enter into interstate commerce . Whereas ordinary sand and gravel are bulky commodities , these specialties have a fairly high unit value and hence can be transported relatively long distances .

This summary of State laws on explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist and in locating them quickly, with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of those jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a single subject. For the first time the Bureau of Mines is combining, in one report, comprehensive tabulations on both beehive and slot-type ovens. This publication presents statistical data on the number and capacity of all such coke ovens in the United States on December 31, 1957. Combining data on both types of ovens should prove helpful to those interested in keeping abreast of the latest changes in carbonizing capacity, particularly since the coke has similar properties and uses. Annual reports furnished to the Bureau of Mines by coke-oven operators shared that 78 oven-coke plants were operating in 22 States on December 31, 1957. This was a decline of one plant from December 31, 1956, as the Republic Steel Corp. took the ovens at Canton, Ohio, out of production on December 17, 1957, for dismantling and rebuilding in 1958. Total oven-coke capacity was 80,299,400 tons in 1957.

Table 19 and figure 7 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface metal/nonmetal mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 19 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. A total of 79 fires occurred in 16 states during 1990-2001 for these mines. Forty-five of the fires caused 44 injuries and 2 fatalities (including 9 fires and 7 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 6.6 fires and 3.7 injuries. Sixty-five fires with 31 injuries and 2 fatalities occurred at metal mines, and 14 fires with 13 injuries occurred at nonmetal mines. The Ewhr value was 546 x 106 hr (In = 0.016), and the LWD value was 13,134. Nevada and Arizona had the most fires (19 fires, 10 injuries, and 1 fatality; and 19 fires and 11 injuries, respectively). They were followed by Minnesota (11 fires, 4 injuries, and 1 fatality) and Alaska (6 fires and 4 injuries). Of these states, Alaska had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.079). Table 20, partly illustrated in figure 8, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires increased during the second period, then decreased during most of the remaining periods. The number of fire injuries decreased during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the last period), accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the third and fourth periods). The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the number of fire injuries. Tables 21-26 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 9 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 27 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

This paper on mining practice at the Fresnillo silver mines is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of North America. Two classes of ore are produced at Fresnillo. A low-grade oxidized silver ore; end a complex-base sulphide are containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. This paper is confined to a discussion of operations relating to the production of oxidized silver ores. To date, more than 10 Million tons of this ore rave been mined. The present (June, 1931) daily production is 2,000 tons of ore, and approximately 600 men are employed in the mining operations.
