The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. The economic growth of Hong Kong and adjacent territories in Southern China is, to a considerable extent, dependant on air transportation, but the present Kai Tak Airport is incapable of expansion to meet future needs. After years of study, agreement was reached to build a new airport on the island of Chek Lap Kok, some 34 km remote from Hong Kong, with an ultimate capacity of 87M passengers and 8.9 Ml of cargo per annum. Apart from the building of the airport and its associated infrastructure (including a new town), other similar massive construction works have been necessary in the form of land reclamation from the sea and existing outer lying islands. The construction of bridges, tunnels, railways and highways are also an integral part of the project. The paper provides a broad overview of the concepts of the scheme (called The Airport Core Programme) and highlights some of the major operations and equipment being used in the projects, whose cost at 1992 prices was reckoned to he Hong Kong (HR)$l63hn.

An account is given of the history and operation of the Straits Tin market and the Penang price. The procedure by which the official ruling tin price is determined is presented and the way in which bids are treated is outlined: the price declared in Penang is the result of a joint operation by the two Malaysian smelters and is arrived at by finding the highest price at which the whole of the day's offerings for sale can be sold, thus reflecting the marriage of the offerings of the individual mine producers with the demand for Straits Tin from the consuming countries of the world. A system of accurate weighing, sampling and assaying of concentrates delivered to the smelters' premises enables the various ore-buying agencies of the two smelters to notify their central offices promptly of the estimated tin content of the concentrates their customers wish to price that day, so that by 11.00 a.m. both smelters will have exchanged with each other figures giving the total quantity of metal they have for inclusion in the day's market, at the same time exchanging particulars of the bids they have received. Miners are encouraged to sell regularly for cash and an evenness is thus achieved which avoids large daily fluctuations in overall quantity.

One of the major factors restricting an increase in the productivity of a longwall mine is lower productivity obtained in a development panel. There has been a significant improvement in gate road development, particularly in mines requiring high density roof and rib bolting within 2 m of the face. Advance rates have increased from an average of 3 m to 5 m per shift in 1985 up to an average of 5 m to 10 m per shift in 1991. In mines at shallow depths with reasonably good conditions the increase has not been that significant. Advance rates have increased from an average of 7 m to 12 ni per shift in 1985 to an average of 12 m to 15 m per shift in 1991. Compared to the United States' (US) development rates, these are much lower. Extensive research work has been carried out to minimise cutting, wheeling, support setting time, and to optimise pillar length to achieve maximum advance rates. Pillar optimisation is very important in order to expedite adverse rates. This paper investigates various development rate technologies, both present and future, and optimises pillars to improve these dev elupment rates. Pillar optimisation is based upon time and motion studies conducted at mines in the Illawara region of New' South Wales, Australia, and the basic tools of arithmetic.

"(1) The radiological appearances of pneumokoniosis on the Kolar Gold Field is described in detail. The characteristic abnormality is the. presence of a diffuse, fine annular and punctate mottling. (2) The frequency of symptoms could not be determined with any degree of accuracy, but it is believed that symptoms are absent and there is no incapacity until profuse radiological mottling is present, i.e., after long exposure to dust. (3) There is an increased predisposition to tuberculosis, which, if it occurs, affects the prognosismost unfavourably.(4) Pathological examination shows that the radiological mottling is due to the presence inthe lung of numerous small dust-cdll aggregates (up to T5 mm. in dia.) deposited around the smaller bronchioles and blood-vessels.(5) The dust-cell aggregates are relatively acellular but when tuberculosis is superadded thereis an excessive cellular and fibrotic reaction.(6) The difficulties of defining the radiological and pathological appearances of early pneumokoniosisare discussed.(7) The incidence of pneumokoniosis in 7,653 workmen with 5 or more years’ undergroundservice was 43-75%, but it is suggested that in future the incidence will be appreciably lower.(8) The methods of- dust production and the chemistry of mine dust are described. It isshown that the free silica-content of air-borne mine -dust is relatively low.(9) The aetiology'of the pneumokoniotic lesion is discussed."

he cathodes produced are of electrorefined grade; metallographic structure and surface roughness are controlled to a depth of 1.3 cm (single-side deposits); silver levels in the cathode are regulated by the presence in solution of Cl- and Br- ions; organics must be used at very low concentrations (around 0.1 mg/l with a consumption of about 0.01 mg/l/hr). The required concentrations of additives were established according to a well-defined strategy based on the consumption of organics at the cathode by a mass transfer limited-process.

"Study of gravity concentrates from the gold-recovery circuit of the Kambalda nickel mill has enabled an assessment to be made of the nature, relative abundance and compositional variability of platinum group element (PGE) minerals and other associated heavy minerals that are present in the Kambalda nickel deposits. The major platinum minerals are sperrylite, PtAs2, and nioncheite, (Pt. Pd, Ni)(Te, Bi)2, and the major palladium minerals are sudburvite, (Pd, Pt, Ni)(Sb, Te, Bi), stibiopalladinite, Pd6Sb2, and palladoarsenide, Pd2 (As, Sb), together with a palladium antimonide and a palladium arsenide that have not been fully characterized. Palladian melonites, which contain up to 10 wt% Pd, and palladian nickeline are also important PGE hosts. Sperrylite and sudburyite are by far the most abundant discrete minerals in the gravity concentrates.Gold occurs as argentian, cuprian and nickeloan—cuprian gold, and as the tellurides calaverite, petzite and auriferous hessite. Silver is present in petzite, hessite and volynskite. Other rare phases contained in the gravity concentrates include native bismuth, altaite, frohbergite, breithauptite, gersdorffite, parkerite, scheelite, tantalite, cassiterite, rutile, bunsenite, gahnite, barite and uvarovite.Descriptions of in-situ occurrences of PGE minerals at Kambalda are rare. Michenerite, PdBiTe, and testibiopalladite, PdSbTe, have been described from a telluride-rich quartz-carbonate vein that intersects massive sulphide ore in Lunnon Shoot. Moncheite has been observed in chalcopyrite-rich stringers, and sudburyite occurs as inclusions in nickeline in a quartz- carbonate veinlet. No discrete PGE minerals have been found within the massive and matrix ore zones in the Kambalda ore- shoots, and the geochemical distribution of PGE suggests that the formation of discrete PGE phases may be related to post- magmatic processes—in particular, metamorphic segregation of sulphides, and the interaction of the ore sulphides, containing PGE in solid solution, with younger hydrothermal fluids. This has led to local redistribution of the PGE, with concentration in footwall stringers and veins, and in reaction zones."

"Albite-rich sedimentary rocks that contain abundant Fe sulphides occur in the lower portion of the ultramafic sequence at Kambalda and their broadly antipathetic relationship to most of the nickel orebodies is well documented. These sediments generally contain less than 0.1% Ni, but nickeliferous equivalents with 0.3 to >6% Ni occur locally in close spatial association with more typical volcanic peridotite-associated massive, matrix and disseminated ores. Nickeliferous sediments have been mined at several locations at Kambalda but, collectively, they constitute less than 2% of the total Kambalda nickel reserve. The nickeliferous sediments occur both on the ultramafic-footwall basalt contact and within the lower part of the ultramafic sequence, and are usually less than 5 m thick. They are commonly finely laminated rocks with a cherty appearance, composed essentially of layers of albite+quartz±amphibole, alternating with pyrrhotite+pentlandite±pyrite layers. Some contain a minor amount of carbon. The sediments are only of ore grade (> 1% Ni) immediately adjacent to massive Fe-Ni-Cu sulphides, which are interpreted as normal magmatic ores on the basis of geochemistry and the presence of distinctive ferrochromites. The nickel content of the sediments decreases to background levels (<0.1%) within about 20 m of the massive sulphides. In most locations the massive sulphides clearly have been emplaced tectonically within or adjacent to the sediments, which are commonly highly deformed. Typical nickeliferous sediments contain about 1% Ni, 0.1% Cu, 0.1% Zn, 400 ppb Pd, <0.2 ppb Ir and 10-200 ppb Au. They have lower Ni/Cu (average 10), higher S/Ni (average 6) and higher S/Se (average 11 200) than associated massive sulphides (average 40, 4.8 and 7400, respectively). The Pd/Ir ratio of the nickeliferous sediments (typically > 1000) contrasts markedly with that of associated massive sulphides (average ca 16).The high Pd/Ir values are similar to those which have been reported for hydrothermal Fe-Ni sulphides and barren sulphidic sediments of probable volcanic exhalative origin. They preclude a direct magmatic origin for the sulphides in the nickeliferous sediments, though S/Se and S isotope data indicate a magmatic source for the sulphur. The restriction of nickeliferous sediments to within about 20 m of normal magmatic sulphides and the lack of a widespread Ni dispersion halo suggest local redistribution of originally magmatic Ni. This probably occurred by diffusion and hydrothermal mobilization during deformation and amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Although not totally ruled out, a volcanic exhalative origin for the Ni seems unlikely."

The most traum atic event within the lUK coal industry during the last 30 years was its privatisation. Who were the relatively unknown people from RJB: white knights or robber barons? This paper highlights the strong safety and progressive engineering cultures th at existed and continues within the company. A long-term view of the business coupled with proven professionalism is amply developed. Quite dearly, to revert to private ownership is not a return to Victorian values but ‘back to the future’.
