Engineers and owners widely recognize the benefits of foundation reuse - cost savings, reduced construction schedules and reduced environmental impacts, among others. Yet for many projects with existing foundations identified as reusable, reuse is an idea that is discussed at length before cold feet prevail. To address this disconnect, Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) formed the Foundation Reuse Task Force in 2021, which intends to promote reuse, leveraging experience among DFI members and collaborating across pertinent committees. Indeed, the task force includes about 40 members drawn from the Subsurface Characterization for Deep Foundations, Sustainability and Testing and Evaluation committees. One of the first orders of business for the task force was to create a database of successful reuse projects, developing short summary documents highlighting the database projects and recruiting reuse-focused presentations for the ITS Money program. Solid progress has been made on each front: the case history database includes 12 cases so far; the first three summary documents were recently published to DFI's website and foundation reuse projects have been well represented among the past year's ITS Money program. The reuse case history summary documents are available at www.dfi.org/foundation-reuse- case-histories; each of the three is also discussed below. The summary documents demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of foundation reuse. The documents are therefore a useful tool for foundation engineers to share with owners, structural engineers and anyone else who may be hesitant to pursue foundation reuse. The task force continues to welcome new members and anyone interested in joining can contact Andy Boeckmann. The task force is also eager to highlight additional reuse success stories. Have you heard a geotechnical engineer rail against using the word "dirt"? The typical maxim is: "It's not dirt, it's soil!" This axiom is so prevalent that it is joked about on the construction site. How did we get to the point in our profession that soil is too technical to understand, while dirt is not viewed as important? Take a moment and think about the images that come to mind by the word soil. Responses range from the sand at a playground to the mud that sticks to the bottom of your shoe, the dark loam found in gardens to the firm earth under your feet. But do you know where the term soil originated? Or how it was intended to be used? This article looks at how word choice can lead to very different motivations for owners, designers and constructors.

As a public servant geotechnical engineer, I observed how costly and valuable geotechnical field explorations are to the success of every project. Often however, the field exploration is a long and complex process that is made less efficient by the difficulty of retrieving and utilizing nearby internal or external historic geotechnical datasets. As an employee of a public agency, we would often start our investigations for every project from scratch, given the difficulty of locating and utilizing historic geotechnical data. This is an ethical and technical failing of our profession. When we start subsurface explorations from scratch, not only do we often duplicate investigations, we are also likely defaulting to reapplying tradi- tional test methods that yield con- servative geotechnical parameters, resulting in overly conservative and potentially costly construction. To address this issue while working as a public servant, I started a research program with Yunfeng Zhang, Ph.D., of the University of Maryland, to build a tool that could compile internal historic geotechnical data and extract additional value from it, using machine learning. This tool was able to provide, upon request, nearby historic geotechnical data, estimated soil parameters and recommendations for geotechnical test methods best suited for a given project site. This prevented common field ex- ploration problems such as, requesting duplicate data, requesting test methods that were not applicable for the project geology, not realizing presence of karsts, missing permits for wetlands, private property and others. This tool allowed for more efficient field investigations with regards to time and money saved. There was one problem with this tool: it could only be used by internal employees of a single state's depart- ment of transportation (DOT) for which this data was compiled. I realized at that point that it would be of tremendous value to make this concept universally accessible to the geotechnical engi- neering profession. I left public service to devote time to building a platform that would host historic geotechnical data from publicly funded sources throughout the country. The tool I helped build as a public servant was the foundation of Geosetta, a nonprofit company dedicated to serving the geotechnical profession. The nonprofit structure was adopted to prevent acquisition by a for-profit company and to ensure that Geosetta remains an independent steward of our profession's valuable data. Geosetta provides a GIS (geographic information system) platform that enables users to view historic geo- technical data and extract value from it with machine learning-based predictions and visualization tools. This data is provided in an open and interchangeable format called DIGGS, which stands for Data Interchange for Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists, making it easy for users to integrate it into their workflows. Geosetta is collaborating with the American Society of Civil Engineers' Geo-Institute and other sponsors to extract public data at no cost to the agency and provide the profession with free access to the existing data and access to advanced tools through a subscription to support the nonprofit mission.

Whenever an organization launches an initiative, the question arises whether that initiative has staying power. Or is the initiative, as is quite often the case, merely a fad; that is, just an activity that suddenly becomes popular, but which does not stay popular for very long. When the Federal Highway Adminis- tration (FWHA) started its Advanced Geotechnical Methods in Exploration (A-GAME) initiative, that question was addressed, especially considering the fact that up to 50% of major infrastruc- ture projects suffer impacts to schedule or cost due to geotechnical issues. Many of these issues relate to risks identified directly or indirectly to the scope and quality of site character- ization work. Effective site charac- terization is critical for recognizing. potential problems that may affect design and construction and for ensuring safe, well-performing and cost-effective projects. Grounded on that, knowledge of all available site investigation methods should continue to be shared widely and the application of those methods should be encouraged on an ongoing basis throughout the project lifecycle. The A-GAME initiative covers five technologies: Cone penetration testing (CPT), monitoring while drilling (MWD), electrical geophysical methods, seismic geophysical methods, and optical and acoustic televiewers. Of these, three soil and rock investigation methods were highlighted that are underutilized not only here in the U.S., but also in many places around the world: CPT: a well proven and established method for soil characterization that turned 90 last year, in which continuous in-situ data are col- lected quickly and consistently. Geophysics: the science that assesses the physical properties of the soils and rock using seismic and electrical techniques, which con- tinues to advance in leaps and bounds as the application of well- understood technologies become more powerful.

In 2018 the Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec (CDPQ) awarded a $6.3 billion (U.S. dollars) design-build contract to the Joint Venture (JV) team NouvLR for the design and construction of one of the largest automated transportation systems in the world, called the Réseau express métropolitain (REM). The REM project is a 67 km (41.6 mi) light rail system with 26 stations linking downtown, the airport and the greater Montreal area in Canada. Out of the 67 km (41.6 mi) network, over 25 km (15.5 mi) is being constructed on a 650- span elevated structure founded on single drilled shafts socketed into rock. Optimizing the design of the drilled shafts was one of the main objectives of the geotechnical team, as it would likely result in shorter shafts that help significantly reduce the project costs. As part of the optimization process, three static axial load tests and two fully instrumented lateral load tests were performed, during the preliminary design phase, on sacrificial shafts to simulate the ultimate load level and validate construction procedures.

This thesis is devoted to the research of the interaction between pile and foundation soil by boundary element method (BEM for short). The interaction is simulated by the interaction between two different elastic mediums. The foundation soil is simulated by the two-dimensional elastic half-plane, and the pile by the two-dimensional elastic finite plane. Therefore, the calculating models made by the paper's author would come more closed to the actual conditions. The elastic behaviour of the interaction between pile and soil, and the whole course of pile ultimate load are analysed in the thesis, and the relevant applied computer programs "BEME", "BEMPA" are designed by the paper's author. The bearing power of single pile can be worked out by the program "BEMPA", it has compared with staic loading tests of pile, and the results are in conformity to actual conditions. So it can be drawn that the BEM for studying on interaction between pile and foundation soil made in the thesis is more simple, more precise and more practical in actual project.

Foundations in any contract are the most uncertain parts of the contract and most of the "Construction-Contract-Disputes" are either directly related to foundations or arise as 'Side-effects of changes in promises related to foundations. Foundation Engineering is defined as ' The art of selection, designing and constructing the elements that transfer the weight of structure to the underlying Soil or Rock." (Ralph B. Perk). This art started becoming a science since 1920, when scientific efforts to determine the behaviour of sub-surface materials were made. The art and science merged to give new techniques and the science started dominating the field as more and more refinement came in techniques to predict more accurately the characteristics of the sub-surface elements. Inspite of good thorough investigations and design, the contractual promises drafted could leave some room for differences between the parties and above all the prudency expected of both the parties may fall short of the expectations raised in the contract. This may give rise to disputes which may need to be resolved as per principles of law. This paper attempts to initiate a dialogue amongst Foundations-Engineers and Contractors as to how do we minimise the differences arising out of or related to contracts concerning "Foundations".

"History never repeats itself, but it often rhymes." The old aphorism reflects how the study of the past may, perhaps, be most widely valued when it can be used to improve current and future decision making. The education the authors received as geotechnical graduate students certainly impressed upon them the importance of recognizing that not all wisdom is necessarily new. Much of their graduate coursework involved reading technical papers that had introduced concepts of outstanding historical significance in the field, such as pore pressure coefficients, stress paths, and the stress history and nor- malized soil engineering model. These papers gave the authors both respect for and interest in the historical develop- ment of the field. After graduation, the authors furthered and deepened this interest by continuing to expand their knowledge of the profession through both experience in practice and the review of additional literature.

In early 2021, DFI formed a Foundation Reuse Task Force due to concurrent and coincidental discussions of this topic during meetings of the Subsurface Char- acterization for Deep Foundations and Testing and Evaluation committees. Interested members from both commit- tees, as well as of the Sustainability Com- mittee, joined forces to form the task force. The task force mission is to promote foundation reuse by leveraging experi- ence among DFI members and collabo- rating across pertinent committees. General goals of the task force are to identify, assess and reduce risks associated with reuse; to educate owners and decision-makers about reuse; and to improve the investigation, design, construction and testing practices associated with reuse. One of the first orders of business for the task force was to organize a roundtable discussion of foundation reuse for DFI's 46th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Las Vegas. Last fall's discussion was framed as a continuation of the successful "Horses for Courses" session of SuperPile '21, which also focused on foundation reuse. However, whereas the SuperPile session focused on technical content, the annual conference panel on October 13, 2021, was envisioned as a less technical conversation that emphasized audience participation while addressing approaches to decisions about foundation reuse issues. Two DFI committees independently organized two complimentary panel sessions for the recent American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Geo- Risk 2023 "Advances in Theory and Innovation in Practice" Conference in Arlington, Virginia, July 23-26. The Geo- Institute (GI) specialty conference welcomed more than 200 professionals and students interested in risk from around the world to the Washington, D.C., area for three full days of plenary keynote lectures, papers and no-paper sessions. The GI Risk Assessment and Management Technical Committee organized the event, which is the third in a series planned on a 6-year cycle. The previous two events were in 2011 in Atlanta and 2017 in Denver.

On any given day, a simple check of the news will turn up stories related to sustainability, resiliency, climate, or human or natural disaster. In recent years, the winter power grid failure in Texas, the Surfside Condo collapse, unsafe drinking water in Flint, Michi- gan, the Oroville Dam spillway failure, wildfires and flooding (to name a few) have appeared in the U.S. news cycle. As a result, young people are aware of the problems and challenges facing the nation and the world and want to be part of creating sustainable solutions for society. Many choose to major in civil engineering because of a desire to make a difference, address climate change, and develop sustainable and resilient infrastructure for the future. Sustainability is at the core of modern civil engineering practice. In its Policy Statement 418, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) explains sustainability is a set of conditions where human society can indefinitely keep and enhance quality of life without deteriorating economic, environmental and social resources. Sustainability is an integral part of the technical outcomes identified in the ASCE Body of Knowledge and features prominently in the ethical responsi- bilities of engineers based on the latest version of the ASCE Code of Ethics. Thus, to prepare graduates for successful and ethical engineering practice, civil engineering programs must provide instruction in how to account for social, environmental and economic con- straints in design. Since the deep foundations industry is integral to the broader civil engineering and construc- tion fields and is responsible for supporting critical infrastructure on which human society depends, sustainability should be a key con- sideration in foundations projects. Given the importance of sustainability within civil, geotechnical and foundation engineering, it is worthwhile for the deep foundations industry to consider where and how engineers are trained in sustainability topics through higher education at the undergraduate and graduate level, and what is driving sustainability content in civil and geotechnical engineering curricula.

The single largest area of application continues to be densification of soil by way of compaction grouting. Because it is often the safest and least costly method for soil improvement in general, and virtually always that in connection with soil improvement under, or adjacent to structures or in developed areas, use will undoubtedly increase both geographically and in diversity of application.

The Santa Fe train station and passenger rail platform were constructed in the downtown district of Fort Madison, Iowa, over a century ago. This landmark building and rail platform were in need of major renovations and rehabilitation in order to restore the site to a functioning railway train station. A multitude of key players from various public and private parties were involved in the design and construction of this project site. Part of the project consisted of constructing the passenger platform. The original design included helical piles to provide foundational support for the platform. Challenges occurred during construction due to the presence of an obstruction in the form of a poured concrete slab in the immediate area where the helical piles were to be installed. The contractor worked with the engineer of record and other consulting parties to value engineer the helical pile design and utilize self- drilling micropiles as a replacement to the specified helical pile system.

This publication is intended to document recent innovations and technologies that have the best potential for effectively improving the quality of marine foundations while reducing the cost, time and risk of construction. Marine foundations originated in Neolithic times with the Swiss Lake Dwellers who constructed pile-supported houses, safe from invading tribes. The Queen of Babylonia built the first recorded bridge in 1500 BC across the Tigris. The foundations were large flat stones laid on the river bottom. About the same time in India, builders extended their water well techniques to the construction of ?well? foundations in the beds of their rivers. These were really the first open caissons; brick walls were built up in a circular ring while divers excavated sand from the bottom, sometimes at a depth of 100 feet. The Romans extended the clay-filled cribs of the Middle East to shallow cofferdams, which they sealed by underwater concrete made with pozzolanic cement from Mt. Vesuvius.

A reliability based analysis method for a drilled shaft stabilized slope system is presented in this paper. In the past effort, a deterministic method using the limiting equilibrium method of slices for determining the global factor of safety of a slope reinforced by a row of drilled shafts was developed using the soil arching concept. The drilled shaft stabilization mechanisms for the slope were treated as the drilled shaft induced soil arching, which reduces the driving forces on the down slope side of the drilled shaft. The effect of drilled shafts induced soil arching on the reduction of the driving stresses in the limiting equilibrium slope stability analysis was quantified by the load transfer factor through extensive finite element simulation studies. A semi-empirical equation was also developed for expressing the load transfer factor as a function of the soil properties, including strength parameters and unit weight as well as the slope geometry and soil profile, the location and spacing of the drilled shaft, and the dimension of the drilled shaft. However, due to the inherent uncertainties of the soil properties and the model error of the semi-empirical load transfer equation, a modification of the deterministic method into a probabilistic method is developed in this paper. The Monte Carlo statistical method is used to generate random variables for the soil strength parameters based on the prescribed probability characteristics, including mean, COV, and the probability distribution function. In addition, the modeling error of the load transfer factor is also treated as a random variable in the Monte Carlo simulation method, in which the mean, COV, and probability distribution function for the bias of the semi-empirical equation are used. The developed theories were coded into a computer program for analyzing complex slope geometry and slope profile conditions. Two examples are shown in the paper to illustrate the analysis results of the developed probability approach for determining the reliability of a drilled shaft stabilized slope system.

In this study, factors affecting the reliability of augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles under axial compression at the serviceability limit state are addressed using a simple probabilistic hyperbolic model and a database of load tests on ACIP piles in cohesion less soils. The aleatory and model uncertainty in a selected load-displacement model is statistically characterized, and is used to simulate representative random samples from the bivariate random vector of model parameters. A first-order reliability method (FORM) was used to determine the effect of sample size on the stability and uncertainty of the reliability index. Sample sizes greater than about 40 provided relatively consistent estimates of the reliability index; however, its uncertainty continued to decrease with increasing sample sizes. Additionally, the effect of slenderness ratio on the reliability of the serviceability limit state design was characterized and found to exhibit a significant effect on the probability of exceeding a specified displacement.

Vertical cutoff, or barrier, walls are an integral part of environmental site remediation efforts. Vertical barriers are commonly deployed to limit the influx of clean ground water and/or to control the off-site migration of contaminated groundwater. The level of detailed design consideration devoted to the vertical cutoff wall component varies widely from project to project and generally decreases with decreasing size and complexity. For those projects receiving minimal design effort, conservative design decisions can lead to unnecessary costs or unanticipated conflicts between the various design considerations. In this paper, the authors discuss several important design and construction aspects of vertical cutoff walls requiring particularly careful consideration during the design phase of the project. These design and construction considerations include the need for and extent of excavation for a key, project target hydraulic conductivity, the use of statistical allowances in the specifications, filter press testing, sand content of in-trench slurry, cleaning of the backfill slope, measurement of stress and strain, the additional of slag in cement-bentonite cutoff walls, and longevity of cutoff walls.

The heating and cooling of buildings worldwide represent a large amount of a country?s energy needs and are major sources of CO2. Therefore, decreasing the environmental impact of residential and office buildings is of crucial importance. Energy pile foundations are a sustainable solution to this problem and constitute a local, renewable and environmentally friendly resource. They are also in accordance with current energy policies. A system of pipes installed within the concrete with a heat carrier fluid that circulates through it can extract heat from the ground to satisfy the need for heat during the winter and expel excess heat resulting from air conditioning during the summer. Consequently, the foundation is subjected to a thermal load, which results in additional stresses and strains that must be considered in the design process. Despite the fast spread of this technology in the last decade, there is still a lack of knowledge about the thermo-mechanical behavior of energy pile foundations. Consequently, design approaches and guidelines are limited. Here, a new geotechnical method for the design of energy piles is illustrated based on the quantification of the additional thermal effects that appear inside the foundations. The method is based on the load-transfer curves approach and has been implemented into a numerical tool called ThermoPile. The software is presented and validated through a developed analytical solution and the results are compared with real in situ experimental tests.

There are certain concepts that seem to invite responses from some, including some in the foundation industry and even some within DFI, that are at best surprising. Business owners and their employees share the desire that their company does well and continues to operate. Maybe company growth is not always realistic but maintaining the current level of activity is in the least what they hope for. In other words, they hope that their company is sustainable, and they are fully behind that notion. But when the concept of sustainability is raised, there is, at least with some, suddenly doubt that that is a good thing. And yet, that concept only aims to achieve at a grander scale what the owners and employees desire for their company. There are many definitions of the term sustainability, but probably the most commonly used description is that framed by the United Nations in 1987. It states that sustainability is the concept of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Arguably that definition is too abstract and does not provide the type of specific goals and targets we are used to. To help with that, to some extent, in 2015 the United Nations formulated 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to provide "a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future." And undoubtedly those SDGs are fodder for those that question the concept of sustainability in the foundation industry. How can our industry, they wonder, ensure that there is no poverty or hunger (SDG 1 and 2), and the climate action goal (SDG 13) immediately leads to the hot button topic of global warming. And maybe this is where advocates lose (some of) the sceptics of the sustainability concept, but hopefully they will continue to read this article that lays out why sustainability simply makes sense, also for the foundation industry and especially for DFI.
