"The Otjikoto mining and milling complex is 90% owned by B2Gold Corporation, and began commercial operation on February 28, 2015. The milling circuit operates at a throughput 3.3 million tonnes per annum, with an average reserve gold grade of 1.28 g/t. The ore is high in Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG), which varies between 73-91%, depending on ore type. Overall gold recovery since start-up is 98.2%, with about 63.5 % coming from the gravity circuit as doré. 2016 cash operating costs, and all in sustaining cost (“AISC”) were $361 and $604 per ounce, respectively.During design, three ore types were tested for GRG content, and based on the high GRG value of all three ore types, the decision was made to treat the full ball mill circulating load by gravity. Once operating, the gravity circuit performance was characterized by performing a detailed gravity audit, which included the ore, cyclone classification, Knelson concentrators, and the Consep Acacia intensive leach system. The deeper ores contain significant pyrrhotite, and this created some unusual challenges that had to be overcome. This paper presents the gravity circuit design process, the circuit commissioning, and the audit results and ongoing improvements.IntroductionHeadquartered in Vancouver, Canada, B2Gold Corp. was founded in 2007. Currently, B2Gold has five operating mines, and numerous exploration projects in various countries, including Nicaragua, the Philippines, Namibia, Mali and Burkina Faso. It is situated approximately 300 kilometers north of Windhoek, the country’s capital, within the Province of Otjozondjupa. "The purification of rare earth elements (REE) at mining operations is traditionally accomplished by multiple chemical phase-transfer processes including precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. We describe REE purification results with Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) columns that were developed to improve the speed and economy of REE purification. The SPE columns have the properties of enhanced equilibration kinetics, so that residence time of a few seconds will accomplish selective chemical transfers from solution phase to solid phase. We describe the separation of REE’s as a class from leach solutions and the further purification of REE salts. INTRODUCTIONHistorically the rare earths were first chemically separated from each other and purified by fractional crystallization. This slow, cumbersome, and laborious process was not suited to commercial production. Solvent Exchange (SX) technology was applied to the problem of separating and purifying the rare earth elements when it was determined in the late 1960s that there might be commercial uses for them individually. At the same time the very slow and expensive technique of ion exchange was applied either for ultra-purification of the desired “light” rare earths, or for the recovery and purification of the tiny amounts of higher atomic numbered, “heavy,” rare earths. Solvent Exchange (SX) has today become the standard for separating the rare earths across their atomic number spectrum. Whereas the separation of the light rare earths commercially may take 30 “cascades’ in a modern Chinese plant, the total separation of all of them from each other may take up to 80 such “cascades,” and is only even “practical’ with preconcentrated feed stocks, such as those produced in China by heap-leaching techniques performed in situ on very low grade radio-nuclide free ionic absorption clays.. Ultra-pure materials of all types are produced today by ion-exchange processing of ionic species already separated by solvent exchange.Hard rock deposits and refractory residues of tin mining and residues from uranium mining have been identified outside of China with very high ratios of dysprosium and other heavy rare earths to the majority lighter ones. Material loss by abrasion of contact surfaces of pipes, chutes, pumps, and other equipment in contact with ore is one of the main reasons for downtime of mining operations. Abrasion protection materials in use range from expensive tungsten carbide overlay to hardened steels, ceramics, as well as polymers, particularly polyurethanes (PUR). This paper describes abrasion protection products made from High Performance Polyurethane Elastomers. An interior pipe coating was developed that exhibited outstanding abrasion resistance and an extremely high adhesion to steel. Years of field testing in oil sands tailings as well as applications in slurry lines (e.g., phosphate slurries) have proven the performance of this material. A proprietary field joining process was developed and successfully applied in the field. This joining process requires only one field weld per joint very similar to the joining of uncoated pipe. No internal re-coating is necessary adding savings during pipe laying to the significant savings of reduced down time. Using the building-kit chemistry of polyurethane synthesis, similar high performance elastomers were used to extend the life time of ball mills. An intelligent system was developed in which wear parts contain sensors reporting the actual wear thereby optimizing maintenance interval leading to significant cost savings for the operator. Test data as well as field experience with High Performance PUR Elastomers for abrasion protection in mining are presented.

The paper depicts the current status of the EKSPERT mining machinery management system and shows the prospects for its further development. The system is the result of a rare attempt to utilize the comprehensive dataset; this refers to a precisely identified group of users and is used to develop a solution with a scope that encompasses other areas of activity within the company. The authors present the incredible flexibility and usefulness of the system used at KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. for everyday control of the mining machinery fleet. The issue of visual aspects of the reports generated by the system is handled separately and used as a tool allowing for implementation of the methodological assumptions of EKSPERT. A concept for creating a system for assisting decision making in the process of mine management with the use of IT tools and production monitoring is also discussed. The solution is based on integration of information from both the monitoring field and visualization of the technological process around the Production Reporting Center.

Fires and explosions are not likely to originate in clean gobs above pillar faces steadily driven through a solid panel in order to effect a complete extraction. As. to the storage which such a process implies where the market is intermittent, its cost will never equal that of abandoning large pillars in a fully developed property. Much less will that cost, thanks to the big sizes obtained, ever approach that of cleaning wet and dirty crushings robbed at great expense from small pillars exposed to many years of roof pressure. Even thick seams under bad roof may be fully extracted without the help of filling material. Fatal accidents from falls of roof owing to the great height of excavations, losses in coal, and the danger from fire, have compelled operators in South Staffordshire, England, to discontinue the stall-and-pillar system at one time supreme in the district, and to successfully adopt the following plan: A retreating' longwall is run along the top coal, as the first working; the bottom coal is taken in the same manner, after the fallen roof has become sufficiently consolidated to allow the mine to be reopened. A similar plan is suggested in this paper in order to deal with the outcropping and pitching seams found in the Kootenay measures.

A study was conducted for an operating mine to determine the appropriateness of its tailings material to be used for the preparation of a low modulus, high density backfill. The research was initiated due to issues arising from increased observations of compressive failure of backfill placed in stopes and inconsistent backfill behaviour (i.e. increased backfill brittleness and modulus). Backfill materials investigated were classified tailings and de-slimed tailings. Characterization of the physical properties of the classified and de-slimed tailings materials was conducted to assess the effect that these material properties would have on the strength and deformation behaviour of high density backfill products made using them. Such behaviour was investigated to determine whether differences in tailings physical properties would influence the strength and modulus character of the backfill materials. Uniaxial (UCS) and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression strength tests were conducted to determine strength performance and deformation behaviour of backfill. This paper presents the results of the backfill material characterization study and how different particle size distributions affected the strength performance and deformation behaviour of the different backfill mixes. It also demonstrates how stress-strain curves generated from material strength tests were used to evaluate variation in high density backfill mix response when such materials were subjected to unconfined and confined (triaxial) compression loading.

"For general stability analysis of rock slopes, rock mass strength and rock mass disturbance are definitely should be considered. In addition, the impact of earthquakes must be taken into account. In fact, the rock mass strength is very difficult to be assessed which causes the difficulty of analysing rock slope stability. Therefore, an empirical failure criterion, the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, has been proposed. It is one of the most widely accepted approaches to estimate rock mass strength. The rock mass disturbance is important and was found having significant influence on evaluating rock slope stability, especially for rock slope with poor quality rock mass. In the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, the disturbance factor can represent the level of the rock mass disturbance which would provide a reasonable basis for estimating rock mass strength.This research will not only discuss the slope factor of safety, but also consider the influence of the seismic force on rock slope stability assessment using pseudo-static method. In practice, only horizontal seismic coefficient is used. Various magnitudes of the disturbance factor and recommended blasting damage zone thickness are also taken into account. The blasting damage zone thickness considered ranges from 0.5 to 2.5 times of slope height. The research results have potential to be extended and then sets of comprehensive stability charts can be provided for the rock slope stability evaluations. They will be convenient tools for practising engineers. In this study, finite element upper bound and lower bound limit analysis methods are employed. Their applicability has been investigated in some previous studies. The differences between upper bound and lower bound solutions are less than ±10% which would provide reasonable and acceptable range for rock slope stability safety factor estimation."

Introduction Most of the Flin Flon ore-body, like many others in northern Canada, was covered by water. The original discovery was made where the ore-body outcropped on a strip of land jutting out into Flin Flon lake. The outcrop could be traced for a distance of 600 feet across the strip of land, but disappeared under the lake on both sides of the peninsula. Following the discovery or location of the property, in 1915, and subsequent to its examination by the H.P. Whitney interests in 1925, an extensive diamond-drilling programme was completed, which proved the existence of an ore-body at least 2,600 feet long and 900 feet deep. In plan, the central part of the ore-body at surface attains an overall width of about 450 feet; including waste horses, and gradually becoming narrower to the south. To the north, it stretches out as a much narrower tongue. The main body is a solid sulphide ore containing gold, silver, copper, and zinc. Adjacent to, and on the footwall side of, the solid sulphide ore-body, there are considerable widths of talcy disseminated copper ore, particularly in the upper 300 feet of the deposit, where the maximum widths occur. The ore-body occurs in a greenstone area, the rock being quite hard on the hanging-wall side, with the footwall schisted, talcy, and much softer. The greater part of the ore-body was overlain by 12 to 15 feet of water and from 15 to 90 feet of mud and clay, this material requiring eventual removal, regardless of the system of mining adopted. The total of mud and clay overburden was estimated at 1,000,000 tons. After considerable study, it was decided to mine the upper 300 feet of the ore-body by open-pit methods; the balance of the ore to be recovered by underground mining . The present paper gives an account of the methods adopted in both operations, and of the problems encountered.

RECENT events have emphasized with renewed force the well known fact that war greatly intensifies the demand for certain metals, particularly for iron, copper, and zinc. Any increase in the use of iron and steel, whether in war or peace, is also accompanied by increased consumption of those metals which find their chief application as ferro-alloys, such as nickel, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium. Further, since high temperatures are essential for the production of all these metals, activity in the metal industry is inevitably accompanied by an insistent demand for refractories. For example, in North American practice the consumption of magnesitic hearth refractories is frequently expressed in pounds per ton of steel. This quantity (not including straight dolomite) ranges on individual plants from about 7 to 12 pounds. When the industry is operating at approximately full capacity, the ratio of refractory to steel tends to increase, since the tonnage of steel produced is recognized as of paramount importance, and this leads to the harder driving of furnaces and less regard for the effect on refractories. It should also be observed that the cost of refractories per ton of metal produced is always so low, in comparison with other items, that it may even increase while the cost of metal per ton is being reduced through more continuous operation and the use of higher temperatures. As one prominent Canadian copper metallurgist has tersely expressed it, he is "not in business to save refractories but to smelt ore". The effect of war demands and of general industrial activity upon the production of basic and neutral refractories is clearly shown in Figure 1, which gives the value of chrome ore and magnesitic-dolomite produced in Canada during the period 1907 to 1937. Tonnages have not been shown, as these are not available for the full period; such figures as have been published from time to time are not strictly comparable, since both raw rock and finished products have on occasion been included. The preliminary figures for 1938, which are now available, have been prepared by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on a different basis from those immediately preceding, and have therefore not been shown.

Diatomaceous or infusorial earth, also called diatomite; fossil meal, or kieselguhr, is derived from the lowest form of vegetable life, the unicellular alga:. It consists of the siliceous remains of extremely minute aquatic plants, which exist in both salt and fresh water. Light i~ a prerequisite to their development. These very small particles secrete silica in much the same way that molluscs secrete lime to form their shells. The diatoms at death sink to the bottom of the body of water in which they lived, and the organic matter gradually decays and is washed away, leaving the skeletons. Thousands of years are required by this means to develop bed5 of sufficient thickness to be of commercial value. The siliceous remains vary in size according to the species, but all are very minute and, as a general rule, they can be identified only under a high-power microscope. Over one thousand types have been distinguished and named. They are all composed of a hydrous or opalescent form of silica, with silica content ranging from seventy to ninety-five per cent. Magnified, they present an attractive sight, a very fragile structure with many interstitial openings known as cells. Many of them consist of two parts, defined as valves, held together by means of a girdle. Certain species, belonging to the Pinnularia family appear as a long comb, in half longitudinal section. The spaces between the teeth are the cells. This particular genus is very common in Nova Scotian deposits.

The conducting of risk reviews is an essential activity in ensuring safe operating conditions, both during project design phases and for existing facilities. The following paper presents a structured approach to the conducting of risk reviews for existing operations, including descriptions of supporting documentation and guidelines for on-site review activities. The conducting of regular site risk reviews and safety audits is crucial in ensuring the continued safe operation of existing facilities, particularly in the copper industry where numerous processes and unit operations can present catastrophic risks, both in terms of loss of life and financial liability. The structured approach presented aims to provide a logical and comprehensive analysis of risks to align safety-related facilities and procedures with current industry best practice and ensure consistency across multiple client operations. INTRODUCTION The production of copper, whether by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical process routes, carries significant inherent safety risks. Production volumes are relatively large, often requiring complex processing routes, multiple production trains and a variety of supporting ancillary facilities. Furthermore, considering the relatively large size of ore reserves, copper production plants can have operational lives well beyond the typical design duration of 20 years. In this context, the conducting of regular risk reviews is essential in ensuring safe operating conditions and aligning facilities with current industry best practices. Risk reviews and safety audits can take various forms and have various areas of focus. The methodologies and approaches described below relate specifically to catastrophic risks, defined broadly as risks that carry the potential for multiple fatalities and significant financial losses. Focus is given to existing facilities and does not consider the risk-related activities such as hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies conducted during plant design. The structured approach presented aims to provide a guide for effective site- based audits and a logical analysis of risks identified. RISK CLASSIFICATION Table 1 provides a typical summary of the classification of risk types and the associated consequence categories and descriptions. It illustrates the descriptions of a catastrophic risk in terms of the broad categories of Health & Safety, Environment, Financial, Image & Reputation and Legal & Compliance. In terms of the Financial category, numeric costs ranges are often prescribed depending on the financial characteristics of the specific operation and the associated parent company.

"This paper focuses on a number of interesting results to establish the theory and principle of air-deck blasting. It also gives the mechanism of breakage that takes place in air-deck blasting under varying charge load conditions. With these aspects in mind, the mine management can implement this up-coming technology to enhance safety and higher productivity. IntroductionThe method of air-decking has become an increasingly popular technique in production and presplit blasting. In the blasthole, an explosive column is combined with an airchamber. The main aim of the technique is to control breakage through effective distribution of explosive energy and thereby enhance uniform rock fragmentation. An air column lowers the initial pressure of the explosive products and simultaneously increases the time of interaction for the detonation front with the surrounding rock, which enhances rock breakage.To study air-deck blasting, CMRI initially conducted experiments using indigenously developed, low-cost wooden spacers of different sizes and strengths. Air-deck blasting was first tried using these spacers in 1993 at Jambad OCP, ECL and Chasnalla OCP, IISCO. The experiments were extended in 1994 at Bermo Mine, DVC. The results were subsequently published by Pal Roy et al., in 1995. It is worth mentioning that the performance of air-deck blasting during this period was only compared with conventional blasting practices without going into detail of the theory behind the process."

With potash production commencing in July 1983, the role of industrial minerals will increase significantly to the value of mineral production in the province.

When underground extractions occur beneath or in close proximity to valleys and other forms of irregular surface topographic features, the observed vertical subsidence at the base of the valley is less than that would be expected in flat terrain, while the valley sides are observed to move inwards towards the centre of the valley. The reduction in subsidence at the bottom of the valley is referred to as upsidence and the convergence of two sides of the valley is termed valley closure. Research coupled with mining experience over the past few decades in Australia has identified valley closure subsidence as being very real and quite significant part of non-conventional subsidence effects, which always have adverse effects on natural features, with risks to water flow and aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, we describe a threedimensional numerical modelling approach to investigate the geomechanical mechanisms which cause the valley closure subsidence behaviour, using distinct element computer package 3DEC. The calibrated models can accurately predict subsidence and horizontal displacements, and they are subsequently extended to specifically study the effect of a series of mining geological and topographical factors on valley closure subsidence phenomenon, by developing a range of hypothetical scenarios. Previous analyses carried out using a two-dimensional numerical modelling technique have identified the potential parameters that affect the valley closure subsidence, which mainly include longwall position, horizontal stresses, valley sloping angle, and valley shape. Further three-dimensional analyses regarding the relationships between the major factors and valley closure subsidence are discussed in this paper. The results have significant implications with regard to both the underlying mechanisms that lead to this nonconventional subsidence behaviour, and how these should be incorporated in future valley closure subsidence prediction and mitigation of its impacts on natural features.

"Ore deposits containing rare earth elements normally contain small amounts of the radioactive elements thorium (Th) and/or uranium (U). These are the naturally-occurring isotopes U238, U235, and Th232 (and associated decay-series daughter products) that are ubiquitous in nature, and that contribute a small percentage of the natural background radiation exposure encountered by humans. The presence of these radioactive materials in the ore deposit creates potential hazards to human health and the environment that must be dealt with properly in the mining, processing, and refining of the ores, as well as management of waste streams and residues. This paper presents an overview of the environmental and safety issues associated with U and Th, with particular emphasis on rare earth mining, processing, and refining projects; the regulatory approaches followed to ensure that rare earth deposits are developed, operated, closed, and decommissioned safely; and the development of information during the project predevelopment work and permitting processes that feed into the design, operation, and closure of tailings impoundments and milling/separation/refining facilities. Case studies will be presented subject to the availability of relevant public information. INTRODUCTIONNearly all ore deposits containing economically-recoverable rare earth minerals also contain small amounts of the radioactive isotopes for the elements thorium (Th) and/or uranium (U) and their associated radioactive decay products. Therefore, the handling and management of these materials in mining and mineral processing operations must be performed so that workers and the environment are protected from harm from Th and/or U (and their radioactive decay products), just as they must be protected from any other potentially harmful constituents present in the ore or introduced in processing. Examples of these might include ores with high sulfide content, which may pose a risk of acid rock drainage, or chemicals used in ore processing and metals production.The purpose of this paper is to present information on how rare earth mining and processing projects with ores containing Th and/or U can be developed, operated, and decommissioned safely according to applicable regulations intended to protect worker health & safety and the environment.It should be noted that some countries are considering developing Th as a feedstock for producing nuclear energy, which could have some effect on future development of rare earth ore deposits. To avoid confusion, that issue is not discussed in this paper."

Magnesium rods of 99.95% purity and approximately 6 mm in diameter were continuously cast at rates of between 15 and 25 mm/min by a heated mould process and their mechanical properties evaluated. It was found that rods cast at 15 and 20 mm/min consisted of a single crystal, while rods cast at a speed of 25 mm/min were multi-crystalline and showed a unidirectional structure. Although room temperature tensile ductility to fracture varied widely, it was found that with an appropriate crystal orientation, cast rods can exhibit elongation by as much as 215%.

Grinding mills are the heart of the mineral processing plant, and are production-critical machines which are required to achieve high availability. Liner wear life and a liner design that promotes ease of installation are important variables to achieve a high level of mill availability. Increased mill size results in more mill internal surface to protect, and more liner components to install and remove. This drives designers toward an increase in liner size to minimize the number of components to be installed by the liner handler. The liner attachment method can also have a large impact on mill availability as well as safety during installation. This paper outlines the experience from the development, installation and follow-up of liners installed in two 38' x 45' AG Mills at Boliden Aitik in Sweden. A new Poly-Met shell liner concept has been developed to minimize the number of liner components. The new Poly-Met shell liner components are made much larger than conventional Poly-Met or steel liners. This reduces the number of components to be installed/removed by the liner handler and helps to minimize installation time and consequently down- time. A new attachment system has also been developed to eliminate the need for the installation crew to be in the ?drop-zone? of the shell liners while installing the liner bolts. One interesting aspect of this project was the requirement to predict liner life for these new large format AG mills. The existing 22' diameter mills at Aitik provided a base-line reference for this purpose, and DEM studies were used in the project development stage to predict the wear life of shell liners for the new 38' diameter AG mills. The results from this study are included.

"The Giant claims are on the west side of Yellowknife bay about 1 ½ miles north of the settlement of Yellowknife. They were staked in 1935 by prospectors in the employ of Burwash Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, and were transferred to Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1937, on the incorporation of that Company. During the period 1936 to 1940 a number of surface discoveries were investigated by trenching, test pitting, and diamond drilling. A shallow inclined shaft was sunk on the Brock zone, a system of narrow and irregular quartz veins, and some 75 tons of high-grade ore was mined and shipped to the Trail smelter. In 1943 management control was acquired by Frobisher Exploration Company, Limited. An intensive campaign of diamond drilling was commenced in January 1944 and carried on continuously for 2 years. This drilling indicated the presence of substantial gold orebodies lying within well-developed shear zones. Two shafts, 1 ¼ miles apart, were sunk during 1946 and underground development started on two of the orebodies.The claims are underlain largely by rocks of the Yellowknife greenstone belt, which extends from the shore of Great Slave lake along the west side of Yell ow knife bay and northward . The most conspicuous structural features are the steeply dipping late faults. The chief of these is the West Bay, which bisects the greenstone belt at an acute angle and crosses the southern part of the Giant group. At the 'big bend' near the west boundary of the claims there is a remarkably sudden change in the strike of the fault, from about 12° N.W. to about 3° N.E. The apparent horizontal displacement along this fault is of the order of 3 miles, with the east side moved relatively north. There are also a large number of lesser faults with apparent horizontal displacements of a few feet up to l,70J feet for the Townsite fault. Most of these faults trend north to northwest. Surface examination indicates that, at least for most of them, the movement corresponds to that along the West Bay fault, that is, the east side moved relatively north. According to the available evidence, all or most•of the movem:nt along the West Bay fault and along the lesser faults was post-ore. Late diabase dyk:s that cut through ore-bearing shear zones, with chilled margins in contact with the mineralized material, are apparently displaced to the same extent as earlier geological markers. "IntroductionRECENT ADVANCES in geo-chemistry and in •our knowledge •of crystal structure provide a key which enables us to create a systematic picture of the genesis of many ore deposits. This genetic scheme may be used with confidence in assessing certain types of orebodies and may be of some aid in actual exploration, since it affords a rational explanation of the dependence of the composition •of the ore minerals on that of the rock type in which they occur with which they -are •associated. For purposes of the present paper, .the elements chosen are •chromium, vanadium, iron, and titanium. The oxides of all these metals occur in deposits of similar or related type, and it is proposed to show that, for each, the composition of the •ore mineral is related to •the composition of the enclosing :rock, and that one of the principal factors controlling the composition of the ore is the ionic size of its constituent elements.Geochemical PrinciplesThe crystals of the rock-forming silicates and of the magmatic oxide minerals are essentially ionic types. This means that they are composed •of oppositely charged ions such as Mg²+ and 0²-, which are held together by electrostatic attraction. The ions of each element are spherical, with characteristic size known as the ionic radius. Crystals are built up by the packing of these spheres in the most stable arrangement compatible with the size and the size and valence of the ions• involved.Many of the principles governing the formation of ionic crystals are •simple ,and logical."
