Bio(hydro)metallurgy is the latest development in the ongoing search for efficient and economic metal winning processes. In addition to bioleaching, other biotechnology-based applications are becoming more and more accepted. In this paper the THIOMET process for general effluent treatment is described. With this process, it is possible to produce sulfide on-site and on-demand and to use the sulfide to precipitate metals, even selectively when required. The process is ideally suited as a treatment to remove metals after, for example, an acid regeneration process. Another process is proposed that deals with stainless steel pickling bleeds. Such effluents typically contain nitrate, iron, nickel, chromium(VI) and other species. This one process handles these compounds, as well as other metals.

"As one of the most typical additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, selective laser melting (SLM) removes many of the shape restrictions that limit materials design, thereby allowing computationally optimised and high performance structures to be directly produced and tested. Due to the high reflectivity and lower absorptivity of Al alloy A357 powder during high temperature laser melting, one of the issues SLM might bring is the surface roughness and defects present on the parts. In this regard, this study investigates the surface roughness – fatigue property relationship for a heat-treated aluminium alloy A357 after SLM. Via the adjustment of SLM parameters, an ultrafine microstructure can be obtained due to the fast solidification rate. Therefore, comparable or even better mechanical properties can be achieved with respect to traditional A357 casting counterparts. Meanwhile, the surface roughness conditions of the SLMed Al alloy are also influenced by various processing parameters, raw powder properties, and sample building methods. For selective laser melted Al alloy A357 specimens, a dense part with a smoother surface would be expected to correspond with a good fatigue performance.INTRODUCTION Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a process in which a complex part is fabricated layer by layer from a digital design package (Martin et al., 2017). AM has the potential to conserve raw materials, reduce the energy consumption, part cost, and fabrication time. Furthermore, as a typical additive manufacturing (AM) process, selective laser melting (SLM) was originally developed from selective laser sintering (SLS) based on higher quality lasers (Rao, Zhang, Fang, Chen, Wu, & Davies, 2017b). Different from conventional casting consuming valuable time and energy, SLM is now used as a cost effective method for the manufacturing of metals, such as Al-Si alloys, to produce almost full density parts using fine metallic powder and high power laser beam (Tang & Pistorius, 2017)."

A laboratory investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of different binding agents in a paste backfilling operation suitable to be used in a sulphide-rich environment. Different combinations of Portland cement and fly ash type C as well as ferrous slag were used as the binding agents. The unconfined compressive strength of the samples was measured for extended curing periods. The results indicate that the addition of 3% slag in the binding agent mix could produce strengths up to 0.5 MPa in the samples under investigation. For higher binding contents, the addition of Portland cement will lead to higher availability of calcium hydroxide and calcium aluminate, which are susceptible to deterioration from the phenomenon known as sulphate attack. Using slag, on the other hand, will reduce the permeability, availability of calcium hydroxide, and dilute the calcium aluminate ions reducing the susceptibility of the samples to sulphate attack. However, gypsum will form which could have the same detrimental effect on the strength of the treated matrix. Therefore, special attention must be given to the content and properties of agents used to activate the pozzolanic properties of the slag.

"It has been clarified that the Al-5%Mg alloys containing 200 mass ppm of sodium showed grain boundary (GB) fracture, even when tested at room temperature, as well as at high temperatures (~500°C). SEM/EDX study revealed that the GB fracture was associated with the segregation of sodium on grain boundaries of the Al-Mg base alloys. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that the GB fracture at room temperature of Al-Mg alloys was caused by sodium segregation in the solid state. It was also shown that the tendency of the GB fracture strongly depended on the heat treatment; the alloys after the solution heat treatment showed severe GB fracture compared with the alloys after the homogenizing treatment. Moreover, it was shown that the GB fracture at room temperature by sodium segregation was suppressed by the addition of bismuth or indium. The suppression of the GB fracture by the additional elements was believed to be the scavenging effects by forming the sodium bearing compounds in grains.INTRODUCTIONIt is widely known that Al-Mg base alloys containing high amount of magnesium(~5 mass%)show better workability at room temperature, while that the alloys show grain boundary (GB) embrittlement at higher temperatures ranging from 200 to 500°C, depending on grain size(Otsuka, 1984), sodium impurity level(Ransley, 1959, Okada, 1997, Horikawa, 2001)and testing strain rate(Yamada, 2012). In the case of coarse-grained Al-5%Mg alloys (~300 ?m), 2 mass ppm of sodium causes severe GB fracture around 300°C, however, the Al-5%Mg-2ppm alloy does not show GB fracture at room temperature. It has also been shown that the GB embrittlement caused by 2ppm of sodium was suppressed by the additional elements, such as bismuth (Talbot, 1995), antimony (Ueda, 1997) and indium (Horikawa, 2012). Basedon these facts, we have concluded that the GB embrittlement at higher temperatures of Al-Mg alloys is attributed to the synergy effects of GB segregation of atomic sodium and GB sliding. For the GB embrittlement mechanism of Al-Mg alloys, involvement of low melting point metallic phases has been pointed out (Lynch, 2002),since the GB embrittlement appeared only at high temperatures. Up to date, the effects of high amount of sodium addition more than 2 ppm on GB fracture were not fully investigated in Al-Mg alloys. In the present study, the effect of 100 ppm ordered sodium impurity on GB fracture of Al-5%Mg alloys was examined, together with the effect of another additional elements."

The complex niobium-rare earth pyrochlore-monazite-crandallite ores of the Tomtor deposit, located in the Siberian Arctic, should be considered as a new type of rare metal materials. The major valuable components of the ore are niobium, rare earth elements, yttrium, and scandium; associated components are titanium, vanadium, aluminum, and phosphorus. Because of the irregular distribution of the rare earth metals and niobium according to grain-size, the extremely finely dispersed nature of the minerals and their close interpenetration to each other, ore processing by gravitation and flotation is not successful. The processes studied for the treatment of the Tomtor ores use direct alkaline-acid leaching to open the ore. A problem in the first stage of alkaline leaching is the high aluminum content, which decreases the activity of sodium hydroxide and alkaline-earth metals, which are bound to phosphorus. Ore processing using alkaline-nitrate and alkaline-chloride leaching was proposed and investigated. The first variant was used to obtain rare earth and scandium materials and a niobium-titanium concentrate, which can be a stock material for processors who use chlorination for the processing of ores and concentrates. The second variant is a complex advanced ore processing scheme with electrochemical regeneration of the waste chloride solutions obtaining sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, and chloridizing agents. Moreover trisodium phosphate is used for purification of the waste mother liquors from metal cations. The complex salt, NaAlCl4, is proposed as the chloridizing agent for the decomposition of the niobium-titanium concentrate.

The performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) depends on the efficiency of the cutters, which can be influenced by geological conditions and rock mass properties. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model, based on a discrete element method, was used to evaluate the effects of joint orientation and its spacing on the fragmentation process by a TBM cutter. Several models were constructed to study the effects of variable orientation; these models incorporated different spacing, variable spacing, different orientations on the fragmentation process, and different sections of the block model. Three parameters, consisting of induced tensile stress, induced shear stress and maximum displacement, were calculated. The stress in each section that forms chips was considered as critical stress; critical joint spacing and orientation in each section were determined. Results show that the critical orientation was in the range of 45 to 60º, where there was a possibility to achieve the maximum penetration rate. The critical joint spacing was 200 mm and, by increasing joint spacing, the value of critical stress decreased significantly. Furthermore, joint orientation could influence more than joint spacing in the rock cutting process.

The dissolution of chalcopyrite has received a significant amount of attention. The predominant paradigm of investigation is that its rate of dissolution is limited or passivated by a surface coating or film of material. The common candidates for such a passivating coating are numerous: polysulfide coating, metal deficient layers, copper sulfide coating, bornite layers, jarosite precipitates, and elemental sulfur films. While this line of explanation, that is, the explanation based on passivation, seems to have won some form of consensus with researchers, there is another explanation for the results that can account for all the results observed. Crundwell (1988) proposed that the solid state properties of chalcopyrite, in particular, the semiconducting properties, are responsible for the observed behaviour of chalcopyrite. The purpose of this paper is to outline the semiconductor mechanism of dissolution, and to show how this mechanism accounts for all the observed phenomena recently reported in the literature. The effects of particle size distribution on metal extraction have been determined from pressure leaching Renzy Mines Limited concentrate with oxygen. Using a pulp density of 30 per cent solids, an oxygen pressure of 80 psig, a temperature of 230°F, a grind of 2.5 hours and a retention of 8 hours resulted in the almost complete dissolution of the nickel and the cobalt and the decomposition of over 96 per cent of the chalcopyrite finer than 20 microns. Only 11 per cent of the chalcopyrite coarser than 20 microns was reduced to smaller than 20 microns.

The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of variables, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. This paper describes the most recent advances and current research trends.

"INTRODUCTION A pilot heap leach project was conducted on the B. P. Selco Hope Brook ore located in southwestern Newfoundland. The pilot heap leach was undertaken to assess and confirm the following:1) To confirm that heap leach technology now currently used in the United States could be applicable to Canadian sites.2) To confirm gold recovery by the Heap Leach technology3) To assess and study potential heap leach environmental concerns in cold and wet climate.PROJECT LOCATIONThe Hope Brook Project is located near the southern coast of the island of Newfoundland, approximately 100 kilometers southeast from Stephenville, approximately 25 kilometers west of Burgeo, Newfoundland. Access to the property is limited to helicopter, float plane or by sea through Couteau Bay. The property was covered with muskeg and very few trees. Surface relief was moderate with many poorly drained boggy sections confined to small areas. Many small unnamed lakes were located on the property which provided water to small brooks and streams flowing to Couteau Bay.Several locations were reviewed for the installation of the pilot heap leach facility. Important parameters used to select a suitable location included sufficient land area, close proximity to but not on the ore body, reasonable protection from wind, sufficient supply of fresh water, close to a suitable location for a portable crushing plant, reasonable access to aggregate material for preparation of the test pad and ponds and suitable contours to minimize site preparation."

The Homestake gold mine is one of the largest and oldest continuously operating gold mines in orth Ame rica. To date this mine has produced in excess of 128.000.000 tons of ore containing almost 34 million ounces of gold . Gold mine ralization is restricted to the Homestake Formation. This unit is a metamorphosed iron-formation which is enclosed by pellitic metasedime nts below (Poorman Formation) and a pellitic to qua rt zitic unit (Elli son Formation) above. The e ntire Precambrian sequence. in the Lead area. has been subjected to a multi-stage defo rmation episode which ha c reated an extremely complex structural setting for the Homestake orebodies. Metamorphic grade inc reases from greenschi st ro amphibolite in a northeast d irecti on acros the mine area. Present thickness of the Home take fo rmation va ric from O to »400 fee t. The amount of thicke ning and th inning which is attributable to tectonic deformation or original sedimenta ry di fferences is not known. Orebodies constitute onl y a small pe rcentage of the Homestake Formation and do not occur along a pa rticul ar stratigraphic pos ition within the unit. Gold i assoc iated with inc reased py rrhotite and a rsenopyrite concentrations within the iron formation. Inc reased \ cin qua rt z development and chl oritic alteration usuall y accompany this minerali zation. Local remobilizati on of mine ralization due to metamorphi sm has occurred. The case is presented for the development of a spray-on liner for ground support, but only in the context of a new mining system, consistent with the technical and business case advantages of liners compared to alternatives. Over the past 10 years much effort has been expended in specifying and testing the mechanical/environmental properties of various liners, without actually fulfilling any mining system requirements. The results have been generally disappointing, with no consistent and sustained application in a dayto- day production environment being achieved, anywhere. Central to this shortcoming has been the failure of mining/liner ma nufacturing companies to realise that screen/mesh or shotcrete cannot simply be replaced with thin, deformable liners: success will depend upon closely defining and evolving a new, liner- functional mining system. The paper begins with a discussion of some fundamental technical capabilities and constraints associated with 3M Canada?s liner material that has been developed in partnership with Falconbridge Limited. Intended applications for this liner include the support of bursting ground associated with deep mining conditions. With safe application and consistent performance in mind, the paper argues for a new mining system that derives in the first place from best quality drilling and blasting practices. Taking this as a given, a system for waterscaling and liner application prior to mucking out is proposed, followed by bolting through the liner while arranging for the bolts to be explicitly connected to the liner. Some logistical and equipment related challenges of such a mining system are then reviewed and discussed in the context of the business case for liners. It is concluded that this approach, if successful, will provide the greatest benefits in the areas of safer mining, due to reduction in worker exposure, and in reduced mining cycle times.

"Mr. Chairman and fellow CMP members, most of these remarks will be made with particular reference to copper concentrate but the basics apply generally to other metal concentrates as well.For very good reasons, using copper as an example, smelting capacity usually is located either close to mine production or close to areas of high copper consumption. The mine producer can add on smelting capacity to insure that the copper in his concentrate can be processed into a marketable form under more or less controlled conditions including costs. On the other hand, the consumer wishing to assure a better supply of copper likewise can build smelting capacity and offer treatment charges attractive enough to discourage mines from investing in their own facilities. In this regard, freight is an important factor. Bulk shipments from the heart of Africa with a large overland component are uneconomic whereas concentrate movements from Australia or South America compare favourably with smaller metal shipments.A mine project which incorporates smelting capacity, will often, through the presence of this capacity, encourage active exploration and development of additional concentrate production in the vicinity. The usual result is that new mines within reasonable distance of the smelter will be able to avoid the capital required to build their own smelting and refining facilities and that the existing facilities will expand to appreciate economies of scale."

Poland is the ninth largest coal producer in the world and Coal Company is the largest Polish producer of this deposit yielding 51% of national production. Coal Company mines are located in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. These are underground mines which operate in difficult geological conditions at great depths of up to 1200 m. One of the most common natural hazards in Polish mines are rockburst and seismic hazard impacting on surface infrastructure and habitants. In the assessment of the rockburst and seismic hazard methods of mining seismology play a leading role. This paper presents progress that was achieved in the last few years in the implementation of new seismic monitoring systems and seismic interpretation methods for the prevention of hazard deriving from seismicity induced by mining. This progress in assessment of rockburst hazard and impact of seismic activity on the surface infrastructure was achieved through close cooperation between the Coal Company and Central Mining Institute ? the country?s leading scientific institute in the field of mining seismology. New theoretical solutions are in the process of testing in mines of Coal Company where seismic monitoring systems are installed and controlled by well-qualified personnel. Some directions of further joint actions to increase the effectiveness of rockburst and seismic hazard assessment are presented as well.

"The oil sands resources in Canada are one of the world’s largest hydrocarbon deposits. Processing of oil sands uses hot water to extract bitumen. The process generates tailings slurry that must be settled for final deposition. The tailings contain fine material, with poor water release characteristics which makes water recovery challenging. Polymer flocculants are added to assist in settling and dewatering the fine tailings. The amount of polymer addition is dependent on tailings characteristics, including the particle size distribution (PSD). If the PSD of the tailings is unknown, an excess amount of polymer needs to be added in the dewatering stage to flocculate the particles. Over flocculation also has a detrimental effect on the water release characteristics. Measuring the particle size distribution using an on-line analyzer could have major benefits over common laboratory methods as it provides online and fast insight into the process enabling the operators to implement required changes to minimize the reagent consumption, while achieving optimal flocculation. Online measurement of PSD using laser diffraction has long been used in base metals beneficiation processes. A series of test work using Outotec PSI500® particle size analyzer on oil sands samples from different operations have been conducted. Tests were performed by recirculating the slurry in closed circuit to simulate real plant conditions. This paper presents a summary of the results.INTRODUCTION Canada’s oil sands are the third largest reserves of crude oil in the world, with an estimated 165.4 billion barrels of recoverable oil (Government of Alberta 2016). Oil sands are a mixture of sand, water, clay and bitumen. Bitumen is a form of oil that is too heavy or thick to flow or be pumped without being diluted or heated. About 20% of bitumen reserves are close enough to surface to be mined. In mining methods, oil sand is transported from an open pit mine to the processing plant and bitumen is separated from solids and water. The separation process involves ore preparation, such as addition of hot water, steam and caustic (NaOH), followed by gravity separation and froth treatment (Masliyah et al. 2004). A general scheme of the extraction process is presented in Figure 1."

"Very seldom, if ever, is a molybdenite by-product plant operated exactly the way the process design engineer visualizes it. The best thing the design engineer can do is provide a sound, basic circuit with enough room and flexibility in order that the operating staff can make the necessary modi fi cations to optimize the process. The plant, with minor modifications, should be capable of handling more than one process. This is especially true when the client is having the plant designed for a new process.The writer would like to propose the following ten ""rules-of thumb"" for designing by-product molybdenite plants where the molybdenite is floated out of a copper concentrate. The term rules-of-thumb is used, because there are probably valid reasons for not using one or more of them in a particular plant design. In fact it was 1980 before the writer was all owed to start up a plant where all of these rules were honored in the plant design. This was after 19 years of experience in the design of molybdenite by-product processes and plants. The main reasons for not following the rules are available capital, available space, and the client's experiences based on pilot plant and laboratory test results."
