"This work investigates the early stages of precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys using a combination of high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quenching from a high temperature (solution) treatment leaves an alloy in a high-energy unstable state, with solute and vacancies in supersaturation. Thus, already at room temperature (RT) a large driving force exists for solute atoms to cluster and order on the Al matrix positions. DFT calculations indicate that strain alleviation is important at this stage. We observe larger regions of Mg-dominated L10 ordering together with a Si-dominated ordering of smaller clusters in a particular geometry connected to the Si-network found in all the precipitates. In addition, building blocks of the main hardening phase ?'', stabilized by vacancies, are observed at higher, typical pre-aging temperatures.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx) alloys are widely used in industry due to a combination of favorable properties such as strength, ductility, corrosion resistance and lightweight. They undergo a complex production route, usually consisting of the following thermo-mechanical steps: casting, homogenization, extrusion or rolling, solution heat treatment (SHT) and artificial aging (AA). The SHT takes place at temperatures above the solvus line in the phase diagram, usually between 500°C and 570°C, followed by a rapid cooling to RT. This ensures that high amounts of solute atoms, uniformly distributed on the cubic face-centered (FCC) Al lattice, together with a large amount of vacancies, are quenched-in. The material is therefore in a super-saturated and unstable state. During the subsequent AA, at temperatures usually between 150°C and 220°C, the solute atoms diffuse and cluster, forming metastable precipitates with needle/ lath/ rod morphologies having the main growth direction along <100>Al. With a maximum alloy solute level (Mg + Si) of only 2%, these precipitates increase material strength up to three times that of pure Al, and are essential for the final material properties. To understand and make better use of this phenomenon, it is imperative to research the nature of the precipitates (such as their atomic structure), measure their key parameters (number density, size, volume fraction) and connect it to material properties (Marioara, Andersen, Zandbergen & Holmestad, 2005; Marioara et al., 2014). Kahama Mining Corporation Limited (KMCL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, operates the Bulyanhulu gold mine. The operation has been in commercial production since April 2001 and is the first modern underground mine to be developed on the Lake Victoria goldfield in Tanzania. Bulyanhulu is located in a major mineralised system along an emerging gold trend. This area, the Lake Victoria Greenstone belt, has been the focus of significant exploration and development programs since 1994, with over 34 million ounces of gold having been discovered and four new mines commissioned. The Bulyanhulu project has accounted for just over a third of the gold resources discovered during this period. From an initial exploration program, which outlined a resource of 1.37 million ounces of gold, Bulyanhulu now hosts a reserve of some 12 million ounces in a resource base, the limits of which are, as yet, undefined. The Bulyanhulu property is located approximately 56 km south of Lake Victoria, in northwestern Tanzania, eastern Africa. A Mining Licence issued by the Government of Tanzania on July 23, 1999 grants to KMCL the exclusive right to mine a concession area covering 51.48 km2. The property is reached via a 75-km road from the main road to Dar es Salaam. The nearest towns are Mwanza to the north on Lake Victoria, 155 km by road and ferry, Kahama, 86 km by road to the south and Isaka, 126 km by road. Isaka is on the rail line between Mwanza and Dar es Salaam and has facilities to receive heavy equipment, and a fuel depot. A gravel airstrip, 1,700 m long has been constructed at the property.

Extreme high grades often exert too much influence on surrounding block estimates, leading to a smearing of high grades that can cause overestimation of mineral resources. This concern underlies the decision to cap high grades, i.e., to lower the highest grades in a drill hole data set to some level deemed to be reasonable for producing reliable resource estimates. The choice of a capping level can, by itself, have a large influence on the analysis of the economic viability of a project. Despite this, it is often a choice that is made arbitrarily, guided more by art and tradition than by sound technical analysis. This paper makes suggestions for good capping practices, using methods and procedures that have been presented elsewhere, in the technical literature and in conference papers. The authors propose to use capping only if absolutely necessary, and review examples of cases where capping may not be necessary, or where capping does not make the estimates more reliable. It addresses two particular instances where capping is recommended: (1) where there is good reason to believe that estimation with uncapped grades will overstate the true underlying average grade, and (2) where there is potential for overly optimistic assessments of local block grades in the vicinity of some very high grade assays. The proposed capping practice is based on adjustments to only a very few high grade assays. The level of this capping can be assessed by bootstrapping and through analysis of the effect of extreme values on summary statistics like the average and the coefficient of variation. The paper recommends that good practice include an examination of the potential for local overestimation in higher grade areas.

THE property of Tashota Goldfields, Limited, in the Lake Nipigon area, Ontario, is located about 4 miles west of Onaman lake and 16 miles by winter road south-southeast of Tashota station on the transcontinental line of the Canadian National railways. The mine, formerly developed to a limited extent under the name of Tashota Gold mine, has, since late in 1933, been under the management of Minefinders Limited, who, in 1935, brought it into production on a 60-ton per day basis. During the winter of 1934-35, the writer was geologist at the property. The geological structure in the immediate vicinity of the mine workings lends itself well to analysis on the basis of the mechanical principles of folding. Since structure is of prime importance in the localization of the ore-shoots and of the host shear-zones at the property, the correlation of all structural details and their mechanical interpretation forms a working hypothesis of structural control for the direction of exploration and development work. It is believed that the structural relations here set forth may be found applicable in part, or at least suggestive, in working out the relations of ore-shoots to structure in the Sturgeon River area to the south, and in the Little Long Lac area to the southeast (Figure 1).

"One of the principal goals of modern industry is to minimize the environmental impact and increase the materials- and energy-efficiency of transforming raw materials into valuable products. This paper will highlight our latest laboratory-scale research in low-energy, low-solvent reactivity of metal oxides and their conversion into popular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (e.g. Basolite® Z1200 component ZIF-8), and metallodrugs (e.g. bismuth subsalicylate, active component of Pepto-Bismol®). Mechanochemical ion- and liquid-assisted grinding (ILAG) and ""accelerated aging"" techniques will be presented, along with novel low-energy and solvent-free approaches, inspired by geological weathering processes, for converting metal oxides into metal-organic materials. INTRODUCTIONThe development of environmentally-friendly processes, which would in the same time be more materials- and energy-efficient than the existing ones, is one of the central concerns of modern chemical research. In that sense, the focus of the chemist has been mainly on the preparation of carbon-based organic molecules and adaptation of traditional organic synthesis to the recently delineated ideals of Green Chemistry. However, there is a growing realization within the chemistry community that significant energy, materials, and ecology-related benefits can be achieved and, indeed, targeted in the transformations of materials that are typically associated with inorganic chemistry and minerals processing. The principal aim of this highlight contribution is to illustrate how, through the use of approaches associated with solventfree chemistry and mechanochemistry (James et al., 2012), one can develop a clean and efficient system of chemical and materials transformations involving oxide precursors that normally belong to the realm of inorganic chemistry and mineral processing. In particular, this contribution will provide an overview of the recently developed mechanochemical and solvent-free reactivity of metal oxides towards small organic molecules. These mechanochemical reactions, including the methods of liquid-assisted grinding (LAG, Frišcic & Jones, 2009) and ion- and liquid-assisted grinding (ILAG, Frišcic, 2010), have so far provided a radically different means to construct advanced metal-organic materials (e.g. porous metal-organic frameworks, [MOFs] or metallodrugs) by rehabilitating metal oxides as precursors, eliminating the use of bulk organic solvents, and avoiding the use of high temperatures."

"Although the Operations Research technique of Reliability Theory has been applied with marked success in many fields, including the Apollo spaceship programs, the concept of reliability has not been generally adopted in mining and other heavy industries. Of course, reliability, or the probability that a system will be able to operate without a failure for a given interval of time, does not require the same emphasis in mining as in the aerospace industries. Nevertheless, certain aspects of Reliability Theory can be followed advantageously. For example, reliability calculations can determine the best time to overhaul and whether to retain stand-by units.The usefulness of the pseudo-operations research technique known as Replacement Theory is more readily re-cognized by the maintenance engineers in mining and other heavy industries. One of the least complex models enables the optimum Lifetime of an asset to be determined."

Agglomeration has as main objective to form a uniform and highly permeable heap for leaching. An inaccurate dosage of moisture during agglomeration leads directly to poor agglomerate quality and segregation of particle sizes during stacking. This causes a heterogeneous distribution of the leach solution inside the heap which invisibly and practically permanently affects the recovery. Unfortunately, only when this becomes serious and the mineral contains an excess amount of fine particles and/or clays then the poor permeability of the pile becomes obvious. This paper is based on the experience of Minera Cerro Verde in the development and application of a quantitative method to control moisture during agglomeration. As the amount of fine particles/clays varies, the quantity of moisture has to be altered in real time. The measurement of agglomerate electrical conductivity is used for it. This concept is based on the sharp change seen in conductivity when the mineral passes its absorption limit. A liquid conductive film then begins to form over the surface of the particles, which leads to the formation of agglomerates through liquid bridges, which are also electrical bridges. Moisture is adjusted to reproduce a value of conductivity established previously and is the guiding parameter. Moreover, moisture amount added to reach this conductivity parameter provides information about the fines/clays relative content for best leaching management.

"The old Albert Silver Mine is a polymetallic deposit comprising concentrations of CuPb- Zn-Ag-U-F within a set of sub-parallel quartz-hematite veins which occur within the fine-grained apical phase of the 2050 Ma old A-type Bushveld granites. Mineralization occurs as an early pyritechalcopyrite- arsenopyrite-galena-sphalerite-(argentiferous) tetrahedrite paragenesis followed by a later, more oxidized assemblage comprising chlorite-hematite-fluorite-pitchblende. Accumulation of metals appears to have taken place at the interface between a coarse-grained porphyritic granite and an overlying fine-grained phase: veins occur in the latter and represent leakage of magmatic fluids from the differentiated, water-saturated, subjacent granite.Mineralization processes in the Bushveld granites are believed to be related to long-lived circulation of dominantly magmatic fluids stimulated by the high heat productive capacity of the host rocks. Endo- and exogranitic tin-tungsten and base metal mineralization formed during an evolving hydrothermal system that lasted for several hundred million years, forming innumerable small- to mediumscale polymetallic deposits. At the Albert Silver Mine, unroofmg of the cover sequences at circa 1600 Ma to 1700 Ma resulted in the incursion of lower-temperature, high-f02 meteoric fluids which remobilized the earlier sulfides and introduced the paragenetically late U-F mineralization."

"Oxygen is essential in gold cyanidation. It is supplied to the leaching media by sparging oxygen or compressed air into the cyanidation tank. The rate of oxygen transfer is critical to achieve the desired oxygen concentration in solution.The performance of a novel device for gas sparging recently developed at McGill University is compared to the mass transfer characteristics of the two spargers most used in the gold industry: the four lance configuration and the inverted cone. The distribution of gas and the kinetics of oxygen desorption of the three types of spargers was studied in a 140 litre tank. The oxygen dissolution of the new device is three to five times faster than the other spargers. This could increase the leaching rate and/or decrease the cyanide and oxygen consumption.IntroductionIn hydrometallurgical processing, it is often necessary to bubble gas through a pulp to carry out the wanted reactions. The gas can act to agitate the pulp and it can also supply reactant. The rates of the reactions which require a reactant supplied by the gas are often dependent on the rates of mass transfer from the gas to the solution.A common example of this is gold cyanidation which requires oxygen for gold dissolution. Since the gold containing slurry is rich in other oxygen consuming substances (sulphide like pyrrhotite), it is important to provide enough oxygen to allow complete gold dissolution within the residence time of the cyanidation reactors. It has been demonstrated that the rate of gold dissolution is directly proportional to the dissolved oxygen concentration of the pulp which in turn is proportional to the oxygen partial pressure in the bubble 1 2 3. Improving the rate of mass transfer of oxygen increases the dissolved oxygen concentration of the slurry and therefore improves the rate of the reaction.The rate of mass transfer from a bubble to its surrounding solution increases with decreasing bubble size and increasing gas bubble residence time which in turn increases with decreasing bubble size. The generation and dispersion of small bubbles is thus critical to achieving high rates of mass transfer. Different configurations and devices used to inject gas have different effects on the bubble size and the residence time, influencing the overall rate of mass transfer. Therefore better mass transfer can be achieved by adopting a more efficient method.The methods tested in this report are the four lance configuration (wall spargers), the inverted cone and a new device, designated HCD. The wall spargers and the inverted cone are used widely in the industry today."

Hence in this paper, the authors propose a ?model for adoption? of robots in construction industry. This model considers how a construction firm will adopt full scale robots like manually controlled machine, tele-controlled machines, computer controlled machines and cognitive robots and assimilate them through various stages.

Microseismic (MS) methods offer one of the few ways to monitor a 3D volume of rock and essentially see into the rockmass and the regions of real time rock fracture. This is a critical component when considering workplace safety as well as the economic viability of a mining operation. New Gold Inc. New Afton Mine, an intermediate copper-gold mining company located 350km northeast of Vancouver in the south-central interior of British Columbia, Canada, has recently installed a MS system to help understand the block caving process in space and time. For a block cave mining operation is it important to utilize the MS events to map out the seismogenic zone related to the regions of stress concentration and fracturing mechanisms which lead to caving. The geological setting within the local array is complex, consisting of several distinct lithologies with unique material properties that each affect the microseismic signal differently. The block cave consists of a muck filled void, also affecting the seismic waveform path. This paper compares the use of a single velocity model to a variable velocity model which accounts for the differing lithologies and cave. The variable velocity method determined 3D raypaths for all source to receiver possibilities through five irregular shaped geological domains and the estimated cave. For calibration blast data, the variable velocity model is found to successfully decrease the error for event location from an average of 38m to 20m (47% improvement), and its importance to location accuracy is expected to increase as the cave develops in size.

"IntroductionTHE LEAD SMELTING Department of The Consolidated Mining •and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited (Cominco), at Trail, B.C. treats materials from numerous sources for the recovery of lead, •and, of secondary importance, for the .recovery of sulphur as S02• The Department's sintering section has a .capacity of 1,500 tons daily. This section is being replaced by •a new charge-•handling and sintering plant with a daily capacity of 2,000 tons of finished sinter. Materials handled in the sintering section comprise concentrates, ores, and fluxes from Company mines and from 'custom' (independent) producers, together with intermediate products from various plants of Cominco'•s Metallurgical Division, all of which must be treated to, make up a chemically balanced charge of a predetermined lead content for the sintering plant.As received, 80 •per .cent of these materials are finer than 200 mesh, and one-quarter of the tonnage (dry basis) is a slurry .at 30 to 40 per cent moisture. This slurry, a -residue from the electrolytic zinc operation, was, for many years, partially dried before being mixed with other dry materials to make up the sinterplant charge.Some experimental work carried out in 1937 indicated that the metallurgy of the sintering operation could be improved by adopting a technique of 'wet-mixing' followed by controlled drying and nodulizing."

"For the last three years (1967-9) the value of the output of mineral resources in the Province of Ontario exceeded one billion dollars per year. To produce this great wealth, it was necessary for the mining industry in Ontario to dispose of an estimated 80 million tons of waste mill tailings. Some of these tailings were returned underground but the greater proportion was disposed of above ground in lakes, watercourses, marshy areas and in engineered impoundment basins. This volume of tailings, if accumulated in one location would cover an area of 1000 acres to a height of almost thirty feet. The provision of proper disposal of the waste mill tailings in a manner such that they will not create problems in the environment is one of the costs which must be borne from the extraction of such a wealth from our mineral resources. It is principally the potential water pollution which may occur as a result of the indiscriminate discharges of waste mill tailings which is of concern to the Ontario Water Resources Commission.ONTARIO WATER RESOURCES COMMISSIONThe Ontario Water Resources Commission was formed in 1956 and operates under the Ontario Water Resources Commission Act. With the pioneering spirit, Canada's natural resources have been and are creating economic revolutions.Western Canada oil and natural gas rank high on the list of such revolutions. Calgary, your meeting place today, is the birthplace of this economic revolution, one that has already sharply altered the economy .of the middle half of Canada, particularly that of Alberta; is increasingly making its weight felt on the economy of all Canada; and is helping re-shape world thinking on sources of vital petroleum supply for both peace and war. Calgary is today the 'operation headquarters' for the great bulk of a huge exploration and development programme that now extends over a quarter of a million square miles of Canada's West. As a Calgarian, •therefore, I am particularly happy to have this privilege of talking about oil and natural gas to members of the C.I.M.M., who play a key role in the development of all Canada's varied natural resources."

An experimental investigation is reported on creep-feed grinding of a nickelbased alloy (IN718) using conventional aluminum oxide grinding wheels. Straight surface grinding expe.riments were conducted on nickel-based alloy blocks over a wide range of grinding conditions with straight oil as- grinding fluid applied at high pressure. Grinding power, forces, workpiece surface roughness, and radial wheel wear were measured. Specific material removal rate as high as 64 mm2/s was Used without burning the workpiece, which can be attributed to the extremely low specific energy of 12.6 J/mm3. It was found that the grinding wheel under the present test conditions had a strong capability of self-sharpening as indicated by the stabilized power, forces, and surface roughness after an initial short transient.

Full-scale rupture tests were conducted on 508 mm (20 in) diameter API X-60 5.7 mm wall thickness pipes containing either axial semi-elliptical cracks or simulated corrosion defects with equivalent depths ranging from 20 to 60 percent thickness. In the case of the cracks, the failure pressures were predicted with reasonable accuracy when considering a level 3 failure assessment diagram (FAD) procedure based on API 579, as compared to level 2 FAD, since the mechanical properties were known. In both cases, the accuracy improved for shallower cracks. Considering simulated corrosion defects, the RSTRENG approach provided more reliable results on predicting the collapse pressure. For a similar depth and profile, the cracked pipes failed at a lower pressure than those containing simulated corrosion defects of equivalent depth.

The larger Canadian Banks have pursued this offshore business through their multi-national organizations; this reflects both the increasingly international orientation of today&apos;s business environment, and to a degree, the competitive advantage of these offshore developments.The current oversupply situation in mineral markets and the increasing maturity of the Developed World Economy reduces the need for new mining projects relative to growth&apos; in GNP. Those that are brought on stream in the future due to their competitive advantage, will continue to be pursued by lenders and equity investors alike. IntroductionProspects facing those who search for mineral wealth were described rather well more than 200 years ago by a Scottish professor of moral philosophy, who also happens to be the father of modern economics.In search for new mines, Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations, ""there seems to be no certain limits either to the possible success or to the possible disappointment of human industry"".How true that statement remains today, where we are seeing economic cyclical problems compounded by basic fundamental structural change within the mining industry.Despite the enormous advances in earth sciences during the past two centuries, the rewards of mineral exploration still remain uncertain. Even though a promising orebody is found, ultimate profitability may still depend on the vagaries of the marketplace, where large and unanticipated changes in supply, demand and prices can play havoc with the best of calculations.The Canadian mining industry has had its share of disappointment during the past few years, with savage competition, shrinking demand, declining prices, and disappearing profits. But it has also had some share of success, such as at Hernlo, which now seems certain to provide some of the lowest cost gold production in the world"
