The Province-wide road ban on movement of heavy loads has had the effect of curtailing or stopping development in several areas. In the Leduc area, the discovery well has been restricted in flow to only a fraction of normal due to limited storage space, but drilling at Imperial Leduc Nos. 2, 3, and 4 has been continued for the past few weeks. The No. 2 well is within 100 feet of the producing horizon and should be completed within the next few days. According to reports, it has been logging slightly lower, structurally, than the discovery well, but, regardless of the outcome, it has been an important test to determine westerly cross-section of the Leduc structure. No official reports have been made available of any tests made during the drilling of the well, but it is understood that promising oil and gas shows have been indicated in higher formations. Actual drilling operations have not been commenced by any of the other companies holding leases in the immediate area but it is expected that, when road bans are removed and equipment is assured, several wells will be commenced. Announcement has been made that Imperial Oil, Limited, will drill a well near Battle lake, about thirty-five miles southwest of the Leduc field. Location of the well has been made following an extensive seismograph survey of the area, with total depth of the test well expected to be in the 8,000- to 8,500-foot range. Drilling will be done with the heavy-duty rig last used at the De Winton test. Imperial Oil have abandoned hope of oil production in the Provost area after drilling nine wells, but will retain their interest in the gas field that has been developed. Of the wells drilled, four indicated gas flows ranging from 1,060 to 13,200 M.c.f. per day.

The search for minerals in the future will be dominated by deeper exploration and the need to accurately target ?blind? deposits as more and more of the ?easy? near surface targets are exhausted. In this context, key technologies are emerging for deep exploration both in grassroots and minesite exploration, including the Titan 24 Deep Penetrating geophysical technology. Introduced in 2001, this technology has grown rapidly into an accepted approach for exploration in a variety of geologic environments, including brownfield environments where discovering additional reserves would most quickly benefit companies. Titan 24 belongs to a new class of sophisticated Distributed Acquisition Systems (DAS) which record high-volume, high-quality data simultaneously at multiple receiver stations. This data is then processed digitally, modeled using specialized inverse modeling software, and interpreted according to geologic and other parameters. The result is a robust, high-quality, high-volume data sets which provide a basis for improved imaging to depth. In this paper, the Titan 24 distributed technology is discussed. Illustrations of the vast improvement to overall exploration are showcased through results in several case studies. These include examples from two gold deposits, a porphyry deposit and a minesite. These examples show the range of applicability of the technology and the ability to effectively image mineralization, lithology, structure and alteration to depth as an aid to understanding prospective mineral deposits and targeting drills more accurately.

A relationship between gas dispersion parameters, namely gas rate (Jg), gas holdup (Eg), average bubble size (db) and bubble surface area flux (Sb), with the metallurgical performance (e.g., grade and recovery) has been established.. Results of eleven columns operating at five concentrators of Grupo Pefioles (Mexico), ranging between 1.52 to 3.35 min diameter and performing in the cleaning stages of lead and zinc circuits, are presented and discussed. The results showed that the effect of gas dispersion parameters was consistent and that both, Sb and Eg, correlate well with recovery particularly when the influence of feed pulp density is also considered.

"Development of the unique Mine Games exhibition at Science World British Columbia is the largest ever collaboration of many interests to present the story of mining and the issues of mineral development delivered to the public by a science education centre.IntroductionMineral education programs have long been a major focus of the British Columbia mining community. Mine Games and its tremendous potential to enhance industries image and the public's awareness of mining is unequalled in the field of Issue Based Education Exhibits.The main goal of the exhibition is to look at the future of resource industries in a rapidly changing world of economic activities, new technologies, and growing public concern for the environment. Three challenges were the aim of the exhibition: to increase participation, to serve as a tool to increase interest in science and technology, and to draw an increasing number of school students to the interests of geology and the earth sciences. Mine Games is to serve as a meeting place for discussion of issues and where reliable information can be shared and new ideas explored.The exhibition is designed to develop new approaches to hands on learning that encourages visitors to explore and generate discussion and thinking with respect to resource development activities.The role of author, beginning in 1993, was, with senior industry leaders, to coordinate the raising of $1.3 million to complete the funding of the $1.6 million project total. The second and most interesting challenge was to work with the many minds that were collaborating to create the exhibition and to assure that the facts and science were correct. This involved the coordination of ""expert groups"" that verified the science and technology and the issues that the creative design team at Science World planned to use in development of each exhibit module."

"The area of uranium deposition is situated within the Churchill Province on the western edge of the Wollaston Iithostructural domain where it underlies the eastern edge of the Helikian Athabasca Formation. The Collins Bay deposit is 6 miles north-northeast of the Rabbit Lake mine. Two principal zones of uranium mineralization are described.The ""A"" zone is a partly eroded, high-grade pod of metal oxide and arsenides sheathed by clay-like minerals. It trends north-northeast and lies under 25 to 40feet of water. Uranium mineralization is localized at or adjacent to the unconformity between the Athabasca Formation and the basement rocks. The basement comprises a granitoid Archean terrain overlain by paragneisses of the Aphebian Wollaston Group. ""A "" zone ore contains phyllosilicates, quartz, pitchblende, rammelsbergite, pararammelsbergite, carbonaceous material, galena, gersdorffite, niccolite, carbonate and a trace of sphalerite.The ""B "" zone lies 6,000 ft south of the ""A "", and subcrops under till cover. It is a partly eroded zone composed of metal oxide and arsenides which occur within variably altered Athabasca Formation. Minerals recognized are phyllosilicates, pitchblende, niccotite, gersdorffite, millerite, carbonaceous material, pyrrhotite, skutterudite and a trace of galena. The Athabasca Formation varies from 90 to 160ft thick. Granitoid gneisses of probable Archean age and paragneisses of the Wollaston Group underlie the deposit. An easterly dipping thrust fault transects its length.The deposit is typical of the ""unconformity-type"" uraniumnickel deposits of the Athabasca Basin. Observed features fit well with the ""diagenetic-hydrothermal"" model for such deposits, as envisioned by Hoeve and Sibbald (/978)."

"This contribution describes linkage of stress concentration at the face of tabular excavations, for example, longwall coal mine panels, at a meter scale to surface subsidence at a kilometer scale. Joints are considered according to orientation and spacing at an intermediate scale. A new dual-node, dual-mesh technique based on first principles uses a multi-scale technique that allows for computing whole mine surface subsidence while also allowing for computational details of stress, strain and displacement about main entries and pillars, panel entries, and bleeder entries. The technique is implemented in a conventional continuous Galerkin finite element program that has been in use for many years.The advantage of the dual-node, dual-mesh technique is the capability to do a whole mine analysis that takes into account interaction between all sections of a mine where stress transfer over long distances is often the rule rather than the exception while at the same time allowing for details of stress concentration at working faces where caving is initiated and subsidence begins. The technique, outlined recently during ARMA 2014 (Pariseau, 2014), is applied to an underground coal mine in central Utah where mines are developed from outcrops in steep canyon walls. Meshes contain over 10 million, three-dimensional nodes; runtimes are typically overnight, as a practical matter. Results compare favorably with mine subsidence measurements made over a period of several years and show the capability of this new technique to provide useful design guidance for tabular deposits such as underground coal mines. The role of variability or uncertainty in strata properties is illustrated in element safety factor distributions about development, bleeder and main entries and pillars. Such details are new in this contribution. Energy tracking for mine-induced seismicity is also new. Results show a high correlation between number of events and failed elements and suggest a simple index to mine induced seismicity."

A flowsheet is being developed for processing Thompson ultramafic low-grade nickel ores. This type of ore is characterized by high content of serpentinized magnesium silicates which generate slimes during comminution. Flotation of this type of ore proves difficult due to problems associated with the slimes. The flowsheet, based on extensive laboratory and miniplant flotation tests, consists of two key components: desliming by hydrocyclones prior to flotation and using soda ash for pH control in flotation. Satisfactory metallurgical results have consistently been achieved in laboratory full circuit simulation and miniplant tests.

"After cooling and thickening, slurry from the second stage of the Hudbay zinc pressure leach circuit is filtered and washed on a belt filter prior to disposal. At times, the belt filter can be a bottleneck to the process. Preliminary studies show that filterability of the second-stage (HAL) autoclave leach residue can be indicated by particle size distribution of the filter feed and filtered residue cake. In particular, the Volume Weighted Mean Diameter, D[4,3], generated by a laser diffraction particle size analyzer from samples of HAL Filter feed, shows residues that filter more poorly have a lower Volume Weighted Mean Diameter than those that filter better. INTRODUCTIONHudbay produces cast zinc metal from blends of zinc concentrates at its metallurgical complex in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, using Sherritt’s two-stage pressure leach process (Collins et al., 1994; Collins et al., 1995; Barth et al., 1998; Shairp et al., 2006). Pressure leaching replaced the original roastleach- electrowinning process in 1993.Filtration for the second-stage (HAL) leach residue originally consisted of two stages of vacuum drum filtration with intermediate cake repulping stirred tanks. As part of Hudbay’s 777 Project, with a designed increase in cast zinc production, a pre-feasibility study by SNC-Lavalin Inc. showed that losses of soluble zinc in the zinc pressure leach residue could be reduced by installing more efficient filtering and washing equipment. Based on laboratory performance, capital cost, installation ability, and potential operating cost savings, a 70 m2 Filtres Phillipe belt filter was chosen for the HAL residue, and commissioned in 2000/2001.When the HAL belt filter is performing well, there is no pooling of water on the surface, moisture content is relatively low, and subsequent analysis shows that water soluble zinc content is relatively low. There have been occasions where the filter has performed poorly with respect to the aforementioned parameters. The final mechanical properties of wrought magnesium alloys are mostly controlled by microstructure and crystallographic orientation or texture. In common magnesium alloys, grain coarsening occurs during annealing process and formation of undesirable basal texture cannot be changed markedly. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of static precipitation on microstructure and texture evolution during annealing at 250 °C after warm rolling of Mg-Al-Sn alloy. Mg-3Al-3Sn (wt. %) alloy has been designed using thermodynamic modeling software, FactSageTM, based on forming target stable and incoherent Mg2Sn precipitate within the industrial deformation temperature range. Microstructures and precipitation were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopes and macro-texture was measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. It was found that static precipitates form in a large scale at the recrystallized grain boundaries and retards the grain growth during annealing. Slight weakening in basal texture was also observed during annealing.

"The focus of this paper is on the analysis of geometrical discontinuity properties for the rock mass located within an open pit mine located in Western Africa. Discontinuity data were collected using various techniques including oriented core logging, borehole televiewer surveys, surface pit wall mapping and photogrammetry. The geological setting was initially studied prior to the data analysis to produce threedimensional ground models of the regional and mine site geology along with block diagrams illustrating predicted fracture patterns. Stereographic and statistical discontinuity data analysis of the geometrical properties of the rock mass was subsequently performed to identify unique structural domains throughout the open pit area. The discontinuity data collected throughout the studied open pit area were primarily discontinuity orientation, frequency and spacing and the investigation focused on the reasons for observed differences between the various data collection techniques. Stereographic analysis was used to assess the preferred geometry of discontinuities filtered by lithology, data collection technique, borehole, discontinuity type and pit wall (footwall or hanging wall). The observed fracture pattern is explained adequately by the geological setting. The need for accurate ground models for the design of open pit slopes is highlighted.INTRODUCTIONThe Tasiast Mine is an open pit operation located in north-western Mauritania, approximately 300 kilometres north of the capital Nouakchott. The Tasiast mine, which is owned and operated by Kinross Gold Corporation (Kinross), began commercial operations in 2008. The Tasiast mine is located in an area characterized by flat desert terrain within the western reaches of the Sahara Desert region. The current mine site includes mill buildings, shop facilities, waste dumps, tailings facilities and two main open pit operations (Piment and West Branch). The West Branch pit is the focus of this paper. The current open pit plan for West Branch indicates a final pit measuring approximately 2.5 km long by 1.4 km wide and 510 m deep."

Electrochemical behavior of an X-80 pipeline steel, including frequency-sweep electrochemical-impedance spectroscopy (EIS), time-sweep EIS at a constant frequency and open-circuit potential (OCP) monitor, was investigated using four-point bending specimens subjected to a stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) test in a near-neutral pH environment. The capacitive loop became smaller with test duration, revealing an increase in the corrosion rate. The resistance obtained in the constant-frequency EIS test showed two regions, of which the region with a remarkable decrease in resistance transformed into a region of slow decrease, whereas the capacitance increased with test time indicating that iron dissolution was fast at first, and then a corrosion product or film formed and covered the surface, leading to the pitting formation.

Wastewater from mining and mineral processing activities is often polluted by anion forming metals, such as molybdenum and chromium. Low cost materials, including zeolites, are studied for removing heavy metals from wastewater. It is widely accepted that natural zeolites are not effective in removing metals in anionic form. The paper presents study on use of metal modified natural clinoptilolite to remove Mo (VI) and Cr (VI) ions from model soft wastewater. Modification with Pb, Fe(III), Zn and Ba increases clinoptilolite uptake capacity with respect to Mo(VI) at low pH values of the water subjected to treatment, the efficiency decreasing in the order Pb > Fe(III) > Zn > Ba. Only lead-modified clinoptilolite shows high uptake of Mo(VI) in acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline conditions. Modification with Pb, Ba and Fe(III) increases zeolite uptake capacity with respect to Cr(VI) from neutral water. The effectiveness of Ba-modified zeolite decreases in slightly acidic water. Over 90 % uptake of initially available Cr(VI) is achieved by lead-modified clinoptilolite both under neutral and slightly acidic conditions. Increasing the initial pollutant concentrations increases the removed amount both of Cr(VI) and Mo(VI) for Pb-modified clinoptilolite. The findings could be a basis for using the natural clinoptilolite to remove in consecutive steps: firstly Pb(II) and/or Fe(III) ions and then loaded zeolite to be used for Mo (VI) and/or Cr(VI) removal. The kinetics of Mo(VI) uptake by CL-Ba, CL-Fe(III), CL-Pb, and CL-Zn is best described by the pseudo-first order kinetic equation. The kinetics of Cr(VI) removal by CL-Ba, CL-Fe (II), CL-Fe (III) and CL-Zn is best described by the pseudo-first order kinetic equation. Kinetics of Cr(VI) removal by CL-Pb obeys the equation for the first order irreversible reactions. Finding way to remove anions-pollutants from the mineral processing wastewater will render this industry more environmentally friendly and socially acceptable.

Pressure hydrometallurgy operations require vessels to be lined with an impermeable membrane for corrosion protection and one or more courses of refractory or ceramic brick. Examples of unit operations that utilize composite lining systems include pressure oxidation autoclaves, sulphide precipitation autoclaves, chloride leach reactors, flash vessels, cyclone separators, and direct contact condensers (heater vessels and quench vessels). The refractory lining must satisfy multiple requirements: it must thermally insulate the membrane from process fluid, be structurally stable, provide erosion resistance, be chemically compatible with process fluid, and provide an economic service life. New hydrometallurgical processes are pushing the pressure, and temperature, with each new generation of plants. A fundamental understanding of all factors affecting the mechanical stability of the lining system is essential as lining designs move further away from the industry's experience base. The impact of irreversible chemical swell, operating factors, design factors, and installation factors are presented based on modifications to the traditional one-dimensional mechanical stress model. A new stability criterion - that the brick lining remain in contact with the steel shell membrane - is presented. This new stability criterion imposes new restrictions on the lining design.The effect of geometry and adding additional degrees of freedom to the analysis is explored using two-dimensional and three-dimensional Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The effect of these additional degrees of freedom on the results of the one-dimensional model are discussed.

The composition of phosphate rocks, mainly used in manufacturing fertilizers, varies among deposits; therefore, phosphate rocks from different sources are expected to behave differently in acidulation processes. This paper examines the effect of preconcentration of phosphate ore from El-Sebaiya East, Egypt, using flotation on uranium leaching. A high-grade ore sample (27.3% P2O5, 168 mg/kg U) supplied by the Al-Nasr Mining Company, was subjected to reverse single-stage flotation to separate carbonate from the phosphate sample. Subsequently, P2O5 and U concentrations were 32.2% (92.1% recovery) and 225 mg/kg, respectively. After the leach process, the U concentration in the liquor was 319 mg/L.

"This paper traces the development of Ontario 's cap lamp standard. Over the years, numerous Coroner's Juries investigating fatal mine accidents have made recommendations with respect to underground lighting. As well, recommendations to improve mine lighting have been made by two Commissions, investigating mine safety in Ontario.During the past few years, the performance of any cap lamp worn by miners involved in serious accidents, have been measured by the Mining Heal/h and Safety Branch. Large variations in light output were found between and among cap lamp types. These variations have been attributed to the lack of quality control on the bulbs, design of the cap lamp head piece and in some cases, poor maintenance.In 1986, a series of underground tests were conducted to establish the minimum light output from cap lamps required to visually identify loose ground. The results of these tests indicated that a cap lamp should produce a minimum peak illuminance of 1500 lux measured at 1.2 metres from the light source. On May 30, 1987, Ontario became the first province in Canada to legislate the minimum amount of light required to visually assess ground conditions. INTRODUCTIONPoor lighting has been identified as a factor which can contribute to mining accidents. Over the past decade, several Coroner's Juries as a result of inquests into mining fatalities, have recommended improved lighting in mines.The Joint Federal-Provincial Inquiry Commission into Safety of Mines and Mining Plants in Ontario, was appointed to report upon the adequacy of existing arrangements and practice s that may affect safety. This Commission completed their report in April 1981, and recommended that inadequate lighting be investigated as a possible cause of all reportable underground accidents, and that a comprehensive research programinto mine lighting be undertaken.In response to the first recommendation, the Mining Health and Safety Branch of the Ministry of Labour, hereafter referred to as the Branch, initiated a program to measure lighting levels in all fatal accident investigations where inadequate lighting was a possible factor."

"Brunswick's primary flotation circuit (CuPb) produces a low grade concentrate containing considerable amounts of undesirable sphalerite and pyrite. To determine the cause of the poor selectivity, a series of Quantitative Mineralogical Analyses (QMA) were performed on several CuPb circuit streams. It was observed that significant fractions of sphalerite and pyrite reporting to the concentrate was liberated, meaning that their depression was not complete. The study highlighted the need for some R&D efforts to be spent in sulphide flotation fundamentals.IntroductionThe viability of many mining projects strongly depends on the performance of their concentrators. More than ever, competitive grade concentrate and high metal recoveries are criteria of paramount economic importance. The selectivity of solid/solid separation processes used in concentrators must be maintained at high levels or continuously improved.Flotation is the solid/solid separation process used by most base metal producers. In spite of its low operating cost, flotation remains a very complex process. To make it selective, precise reagent dosages and electrochemical conditions must be maintained. The difficulty in controlling flotation lies in the numerous heterogeneous reactions that can take place between the different solid, liquid and gaseous phases involved. This complex chemistry makes flotation selectivity difficult to understand and, therefore, to improve from a theoretical point of view.Brunswick Mining and Smelting, near Bathurst N.B., operates a 10500 tpd concentrator which produces four concentrates through five stages of sequential flotation (Figure I). Various reagents are added at key process stages while the ore undergoes different electrochemical conditions. Although the selectivity is important at all stages, the performance of the very first separation, the CuPb circuit, is the most critical. It is here where mineral misplacement to the wrong stream has the greatest economic consequences."

Recycling of dust using a rotary hearth furnace (RHF) has gained considerable attention in the past two decades for the sustainable production of steel with less environmental impact. In order to further promote the recycling of electric arc furnace dust and carbonaceous wastes using the RHF process, a mathematical model was developed to predict the reaction behaviour of dust-reductant composites. The reduction kinetics of zinc and iron oxides as well as the volatilization behaviour of volatile matter in the reluctant were considered. The modeling approach and some preliminary results are presented in this article.

"The Eh-pH diagram of lithium-titanium-water system at 25°C, 100 °C and 200 °C was constructed. It shows that there exist thermodynamic stability areas of Li2TiO3. This indicates a thermodynamic possibility for the formation of Li2TiO3 in aqueous solution. A hydrothermal process has been applied for the preparation of Li2TiO3 using TiCl4 and LiOH•H2O as raw materials. The prepared samples were examined with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that temperature and washing condition have significant effects on the phase composition of the product. Phase-pure Li2TiO3 powders were obtained at 200°C with Li:Ti molar ratio of 2.0.INTRODUCTIONLithium-containing ceramics enriched in 6Li, such as Li2O, LiAlO2, Li4SiO4, Li2ZrO3 and Li2TiO3, are considered as tritium breeding materials (Saito et al., 1998; Roux et al., 1998; Johnson et al., 1998; Hoshino et al., 2002). In view of its admirable properties: low-activation, good thermal stability and thermal conductivity, excellent tritium release performance and reasonable lithium atom density (Kopasz et al., 1994; Roux et al., 1996; Saito et al., 1998; Wu et al., 2008), Li2TiO3 is recognized as one of the most promising candidates of tritium breeding materials. Meanwhile, Li2TiO3, as the precursor of H2TiO3-type lithium absorbent, receives more attention as the development of extracting lithium from salt lakes (Zhong, 2004; Zhang, 2010).Several synthetic techniques have been applied to prepare Li2TiO3 powders, such as solid-state methods (Lulewicz and Roux, 2002; Ramaraghavulu et al., 2011; Mandal et al., 2012), sol-gel processes (Deptula et al., 2002; Lee, 2008) and solution combustion routes (Cruz et al., 2006; Jung et al., 2006; Sinha et al., 2010). A solid-state method may produce a series of problems, including impurity contamination and difficulty in morphology control of the obtained powders, although the process involved is simple. The solgel process is prolonged and usually demands for multi-step reactions, while solution combustion route requires plenty of energy and easily causes product contamination by the fuel used. Owing to its environmentally benign and highly suitable characteristics in fabricating materials, hydrothermal technology has been widely used and became a powerful tool in the field of material synthesis (Yoshimura and Byrappa, 2008). For example, ZnO in the form of bulk single crystals, fine particles and thin films, which is an attractive photoelectric material, was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal process (Sekiguchi et al., 2000; Ohshima et al., 2004). A hydrothermal technique was also used to the preparation of carbon nanotube, which possesses outstanding mechanical, structural and electric properties (Bernholc et al., 1997), and is superior to the commonly used method (Gogotsi and Libera, 2000).
