"This article was undertaken to investigate the effect of nickel and zirconium additions on the strength of 354 aluminum cast alloy. The cast alloys were given a solutionizing treatment followed by artificial aging at 190 ºC for 2 hr. High temperature tensile tests were conducted at various temperatures from 25ºC to 300ºC. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the microstructure of the samples. The results revealed that the intermetallics phases of (Al,Si)3(Zr,Ti), Al3CuNi and Al9NiFe are the main feature in the microstructures of alloys with Zr and Ni additions. The results also indicated that the tensile strength of alloy decreases with an increase in temperature. The combined addition of 0.2 wt% Zr and 0.2 wt% Ni leads to a 30% increase in the tensile properties at 300ºC compared to the base alloy.INTRODUCTIONThe task of improving the mechanical properties in an aluminum alloy at high temperatures should include the knowledge of several factors which are related principally to a decrease in the strength of the metal with increasing temperatures. This behavior is linked to the change or deterioration in the principal metallurgical parameters of the specific cast aluminum alloy during its performance at higher temperatures. Most of applications of Al-Si casting alloys are generally used at temperatures of no more than 230°C (Lee & Chen, 2002). This recommendation is made in view of the fact that, for certain applications such as those required by the automotive industry, these alloys must operate over a wide range of temperatures and stress conditions where temperatures are liable to rise even higher than 230ºC (Robson & Pragnell, 2003).Aluminum-silicon-copper-magnesium alloys such as the 354 alloys show a greater response to heat treatment as a result of the presence of both Mg and Cu. These alloy types display excellent strength and hardness VALUES (although at some sacrifice of ductility and corrosion resistance. These alloys are used for a wide range of applications, such as engine cooling fans, crankcases, high speed rotating parts, structural aerospace components, air compressor pistons, fuel pumps, compressor cases, timing gears, rocker arms, machine parts, and so forth (Cáceres, Svensson, & Taylor, 2003; Rurrxia, Rong-de, Yu-hua, Cherrxi, Xiao-feng, Heng-rong, & H. Zhuang-qi, 2004)."

Spray-on polymer linings, as partial or full replacement for traditional forms of area rock support, have seen rapid growth in interest within Canada. A wide variety of lining types, ranging from polymer chemical to water-based cementitious materials, have been developed and commercially introduced to the underground mining market. Following approximately one decade of development work, several general conclusions have been reached regarding the performance of this class of area support media, these being that: health and safety assessment of the broad range of materials has shown the majority of them to be acceptable and safe for underground use; significant ground support potential can be offered by them, being equivalent to or better than capabilities offered by traditional support forms such as bolt-and-screen or shotcrete, and; their abilities to be rapidly deployed and provide near instantaneous support restraint offer considerable operational and cost benefits to underground operators. A review of currently available liner materials, their historic development within the Canadian mining industry, and overviews of support, health and safety, operational considerations and cost benefits are provided in this paper.

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION AND ITS BOUNDARIESTHE EXPOSED PART OF THE GRENVILLE PROVINCE is the southeastern part of the Canadian Shield, characterized by crystalline rocks with K-Ar ages of about 1,000 million years. Its Canadian portion is bounded on the southwest by Georgian Bay •and by Paleozoic sediments south of a line passing through Orillia and Kingston, on the southeast by the St. Lawrence River valley and the north shore of the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, on the east by the coast of Labrador and on the northwest by the Grenville front, a linear tec-tonic feature that is a metamorphic transition zone and/or a fault. Rocks located to the southeast of the front have younger K-Ar radiom€tric ages than rocks located to the northwest of it.The region is formed of complexly deformed and highly metamorphosed crystalline rocks and in part differs from other areas of the Canadian Shield by the presence of large amounts of crystalline limestone and bodies of anorthosite."

In this study, the effect of strain level and holding time in semisolid temperature range via SIMA process on AS21 Mg alloy was investigated. Some cylindrical samples of this alloy with 1cm in height and 2.5cm in diameter (H/D=0.4) were compressed to 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% at 300-C. Then, the samples were reheated in semisolid temperature range at 614°C for various times. The results of optical microscopy and image analysis showed that with increasing of strain and holding time, dendritic structure changed to equi-axed structure, gradually. Also, the best conditions to obtain good globular structure were achieved. Furthermore, it was seen that after compression and reheating, Mg2Si intermetallics with Chinese script morphology converted to dispersed-fine particles which were distributed into the ci-Mg grains.

"1.1. WHAT ARE AGREEMENTS AND HOW ARE THEY FORMED?In order to have an agreement, at common law, there must be an offer, acceptance of that offer, and consideration passing between the parties. In addition, the material terms (i.e. the basics or substance) of the agreement must be discernible, preferably by means of documentation. Although these concepts may appear simple and straightforward, the law relating to them is voluminous and complex. Some brief comments are worthwhile.• Offer/acceptance: Both offer and acceptance should be in writing, but they need not be. The actions, conversations, and/or correspondence of the parties may constitute either or both of them. Notwithstanding, the local law or practice of a jurisdiction will impose some specific requirements for certain types of agreements. If these requirements are not met, the agreement may be unenforceable. For example, Ontario’s Mining Act requires transfers of unpatented mining claims to be evidenced in writing and recorded.1• Consideration: Consideration is usually thought of as being money, but it can be virtually anything, even “the premises” (i.e. the mutual covenants or promises contained in the agreement itself). In addition, if one party, relying upon the offer of another, does something to his detriment, then the doing of the act can be considered to be an acceptance of the offer and, under the legal concept of “detrimental reliance”, can also be consideration. Whether or not detrimental reliance exists will depend upon the circumstances of each case.2• Material terms: The requirement that the material terms of an agreement must be discernible does not mean that all of the terms of an agreement must be documented or even have been considered, just the basic or material ones. In addition, it will be up to a judge to decide what is material – not necessarily the parties. In order to establish the material terms, a Court may look at all relevant documentation and may hear oral evidence. It will resist “writing the agreement”"

"4.1. INTRODUCTIONThis chapter, although divided into four parts, deals with only two principal topics. The first briefly describes and discusses some common types of property interests and considerations relating to them and the second deals with entering upon privately owned lands and obtaining the consent to do so.It should be noted that the terms “mining rights” and “mineral rights” are used interchangeably. As so used, they include the right to exploit the minerals and dispose of them for the benefit of the owner/lessee. This is relatively common in common law jurisdictions. In some jurisdictions, the two terms have distinct meanings, with “mining rights” referring to the right to work or exploit the minerals and “mineral rights” referring to the minerals themselves.Finally, it must be mentioned that the comments in the Introduction and §§ 4.2., 4.3. and 4.4. are based primarily upon Ontario law and Ontario’s mining and real property systems of registration. They have been included for illustrative purposes.4.2. LICENCES, CLAIMS, AND LEASESIn most jurisdictions, there are several basic types of interests that can be obtained from the state for mining purposes and that are of interest to the explorationist, as opposed to the operator. Different jurisdictions will have variations of these and possibly some extra ones that will address special purposes or local concerns. In virtually every jurisdiction, privately owned property rights are obtained through negotiation between owner and acquiror.Exploration or prospecting licence. This licence grants to the holder the right to prospect over a large tract of land and the exclusive right to acquire mining claims within that tract for the term of the licence. Such licences are usually negotiated documents requiring a minimum expenditure during the first year (often secured by a deposit or surety bond) and minimum annual expenditures thereafter to continue the licence in force up to its full term. The term will rarely exceed four years. The number of claims permitted to be staked will be limited in some way, possibly as to a maximum aggregate area or a maximum number of claims per annum. It is normal for the holder to have to drop part of the licensed area each year, so that the area shrinks annually, although exploration expenditure requirements will usually increase.These types of licences are usually used by governments to encourage exploration of otherwise unattractive or remote areas, such as the far northern parts of some of Canada’s provinces. They do not grant any real property interest in the area for which they are issued, and they will be subject to any claims or property rights that exist in the area. They are contracts with the state that grant certain exclusive rights in return for commitments to carry out work. They may or may not be specifically authorized by statute."

"The Abitibi volcano-plutonic belt forms the major portion of the Abitibi lithotectonic subprovince in the Superior Province. The Abitibi belt is composed essentially of"" (1) approximately 2.7 Ga old volcanic and sedimentary rocks; and (2) gabbro, tonalite, granodiorite and syenite intrusions occurring in well-defined prekinematic ( synvolcanic ), synkinematic and post-kinematic plutonic suites. Most of these rocks are metamorphosed to greenschist facies. Regional multi-phase deformation affects the volcano-sedimentary rocks. Deformation was initiated as these rocks were formed, and peaked at the end of the Keno ran orogeny with the emplacement of granitic batholiths.There are 145 former and current mines in the Quebec segment of the belt. To date, more than 420 Mt of ore have been extracted yielding 1,600 tonnesof Au, more than4,000 tonnesof Ag,4,400,000 tonnes of Cu and 5,300,000 tonnes of Zn. Mineral production is concentrated in geologic domains that approximately coincide with the boundaries of lithotectonic domains. We have compared the geology and mineral deposits of different domains to illustrate their distinct metallogenic signature. Certain domains are dominantly gold-producing (Cadillac-Malartic, Val-d'Or, Caopatina), others are base-metal producers (Matagami and Normetal), while others produce both gold and base metals ( Rouyn-Noranda, Chibougamau, Casa-Berardi-Joutel).Gold is extracted from quartz-rich vein deposits (for example, Val-d' Or), sulfide-rich veindeposits(Cadillac or Chibougamau) and from volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits ( Rouyn-Noranda). Base metals are generally mined from volcanogenic massive sulfide( RouynNoranda, Matagami, Normetal), although certain vein deposits yield base metals (Chibougamau) . Certain sectors are dominantly zincrich (Matagami, Normetal)."

The Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan and Alberta is an exceptionally rich metallogenic region, hosting more than 2.8 B lb U3O8, of which over 927 M lb U3O8 have been mined out since extraction first started in the late 1970’s. A detailed compilation of several empirical features of 85 deposits located within the basin was conducted in order to understand the distribution and variability of the geological characteristics of the mineralization and its associated alteration. A new empirical classification was devised based on four parameters: 1) geometry of the mineralization (dimensions and relation to the unconformity surface), 2) size, grade and metallurgical complexity of the mineralization, 3) lithostructural setting, and 4) extent and nature of associated alteration haloes. This compilation defines the footprint characteristics of the Athabasca Basin deposits, which guides decision-making processes from early exploration and discovery to resource expansion and extraction.

Magnesium alloys have the lowest density among the metals in practical use, and have properties such high specific strength, electromagnetic interference shielding and good vibration damping. Thus, there are many applications of these materials in automotive and electric parts. However, there is a little use of the products of metal forming of these materials because of poor plastic deformability in the normal temperature range and their high cost of production. To expand the range of application of products manufactured by metal forming, rolling technology for producing thin sheets having good mechanical and surface qualities is required. In this study, hot-rolled Mg-alloy sheets are experimentally rolled with or without lubrication in the temperature range from 293 K to 523 K. Rolling force, plastic deformability and surface quality are investigated, and the grain structures and their uniformity are observed. The effect of friction between the roll and the deforming material on the uniformity of the grain structure is discussed. Moreover, rolled materials are annealed and their mechanical properties are investigated by the tensile test and compared with those of as-rolled materials. The effects of the rolling conditions on the mechanical properties are discussed.

Modern roadheaders provide a safe and cost-effective, yet very flexible way of mechanical tunnel and roadway excavation. In the last years, SANDVIK Mining and Construction has developed a NEW ROADHEADER GENERATION, which incorporates new features, allowing significant improvements of underground excavation. Partial face cutting machines such as roadheaders excavate the desired profile by means of a cutter unit mounted on a swiveling boom. This flexible method for mechanical excavation makes the roadheader suitable for a large range of profile varieties and most rock characteristics. Over 1,250 roadheaders have been delivered since the 1960s from the Zeltweg plant of Sandvik Mining and Construction, with the current products ranging from the light-duty, 130kW MR220 machine, widely used in the tunneling and coal industry to the heaviest 300kW tunneling and hardrock mining roadheaders. Roadheaders are generally used in coal mine development, salt/potash mining as well as construction and hard rock mining. This paper describes the technology behind the succesful introduction of hard rock cutting with roadheaders, and aims to offer best practise operation experiences from various hard rock cutting sites.

Abstract Laboratory methods are now in use whereby the temperature and pressure during the crystallization of hydrothermal minerals can be determined. The techniques include the use of the decrepitation method of studying liquid inclusions, and electrical measurements of pyrite. The determinations are sufficiently accurate that the data can be used in solving a variety of ore deposition problems. Within the last year, several new laboratory techniques have been developed in the Geochemical Laboratory of the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Toronto. The results of several tests of ore by these methods have proved to be useful in treating some problems which previously were considered unsolvable. It is now possible to determine the temperature of deposition of most of the minerals in a hydrothermal ore deposit, also the depth below the surface during deposition. Measurements can also be made of the reopening history of a complex ore. The temperature-pressure determinations depend upon the fact that minerals deposited from a hydrothermal solution always trap a small amount of the solution at the time of crystallization. The solution, being predominantly composed of water, has a density which depends upon the temperature and the pressure prevailing during crystallization. After ore deposition is complete, erosion and isostatic uplift finally exhumes the vein. During this slow fall in temperature and pressure, the solution contracts and a gas bubble appears. If the trapped solution in the mineral is examined, the gas-liquid ratio records the density of the solution at the time the mineral was deposited (except for a slight change in the volume of the mineral). The thermal expansion and compressibility of water and water solutions are known to a sufficient degree that, if the gas /liquid ratio can be determined, the temperature-pressure relations during deposition can be calculated.

"Abstract - Potentially commercial deposits of kaolin are found in the fluvial Lower Cretaceous Chaswood Formation, the sedimentologically proximal equivalent of deltaic sediments of the offshore Scotian basin. The geological setting of the kaolin deposits has been interpreted from high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and boreholes, and mineralogical studies on one reference borehole. The kaolin is a product of early diagenesis involving meteoric water below the water table. The distribution of kaolin is controlled by the presence of intraformational unconformities that were sites of ground water recharge, and are marked by the development of oxisols above the water table. Such diagenesis was facilitated by interbedded, loosely consolidated, permeable sandstone. The highest-grade kaolin deposits are found in areas close to river belts, where overbank muds were not sufficiently drained to develop paleosols, but where later uplift created intraformational unconformities. In the sandstone, meteoric water flow altered feldspars to kaolin, thus yielding commercial silica sand deposits. It also altered ilmenite to rutile, which is concentrated as secondary placers in modern rivers that have eroded the Chaswood Formation and tills derived therefrom. Sommaire - Des dépôts de kaolin potentiellement économiques ont été notés dans la Formation de Chaswood d'’âge Crétacé Inférieur, laquelle constitue un équivalent latéral en milieu fluviatile aux sédiments deltaïques du bassin de Scotian. Le contexte géologique de ces dépôts de kaolin a été interprété a partir de profils de seismique-réflection à haute résolution, de sondages, et d’études minéralogiques sur un sondage de référence. Ce kaolin est un produit diagénétique précoce formé par de l’eau météorique sous le niveau de la nappe phréatique. La distribution du kaolin est contrôlée par la présence de zones de recharge associées à des discordances intraformationelles marquées par le développement d’oxisols au-dessus du niveau de la nappe phréatique. La présence d’interlits de grès perméables faiblement consolidés a contribué à l’efficacité de ce processus diagénétique. Les dépôts de kaolin les plus riches se trouvent en périphérie des rivières, là ou les boues de la plaine d’inondation n’étaient pas suffisamment bien drainées pour permettre le développement de paléosols, mais où des mouvements verticaux subséquents ont crée des discordances intraformationelles. La circulation d’eau météorique dans les grès a entraîné l’altération des feldspaths en kaolin, générant ainsi des dépôts économiques de sable de silice. Elle a aussi causé l’altération de l’ilménite en rutile, que l’on trouve dans des placers secondaires situés dans des rivières contemporaines qui ont érodé la Formation de Chaswood et les tills qui en sont dérivés."

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. Le présent article définit une procédure d’essai en laboratoire qui utilise des études cinétiques de flottation pour vérifier l’effet de doses normales à extrêmes de produits chimiques antitartre et anti-poussière (5 à 100 g/t). "Discounted cash flow analysis provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash profits to the magnitude of the initial cash investment required to purchase an asset or to develop it for commercial production. The objectives of discounted cash flow analysis are to determine:.. The net present value of a stream of expected future cash revenues and expenditures... The rate of return which the expected future cash flows will yield on a given level of initial cash investment.In the case of mineral properties, discounted cash flow analysis is generally accepted as the preferred method of valuation, whenever sufficient data are available to permit its reasoned application. Sufficient data are required to support estimation of all of the individual elements of cash revenue and cash expenditure which will be associated with the development and operation of the property, up to the end of its estimated life. It is the accuracy of these input estimates which determines the validity of the resulting determinations of profitability and rate of return on invested capital.In undertaking any discounted cash flow analysis, it is important to recognize certain fundamental attributes of the mining industty:.. The basis of any mineral development is the existence of an ore reserve... Costs are determined by the number of tonnes mined and processed, while revenues are determined by the number of pounds or ounces of metal produced. The two are related by the recovered grade of the ore... Profit is typically more sensitive to changes in revenue than it is to changes in cost... Commodity price is a principal determinant of revenue, but it is also the factor with which is associated the greatest level of financial risk.In the end, of all of the factors which must be considered in the discounted cash flow valuation of a mineral property, the most significant are the reliability of the reserve estimate, particularly with respect to recovered grade, the price at which the product is to be sold, and the risk of not maintaining the projected level of price."

"The otherwise waste heat in many water streams in the mining industry can be used to provide space heating of adjacent infrastructure including laboratories, workshops, and offices. This can be achieved by using heat pump systems, which can work as a replacement or in conjunction with existing space heating. In the example investigated—process cooling streams at an ore smelter—the analysis provided illustrates that annual heating costs can be 19% lower and a simultaneous 62% reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved.RÉSUMÉ Dans l’industrie minière, la chaleur qui serait normalement perdue des circuits d’eau pourrait servir à chauffer des structures adjacentes incluant les laboratoires, les ateliers et les bureaux. "Waste recycling is one of the most important challenges of the XXI century. The recycling of wastes is closely related to and bases on the mineral processing. Many mineral processing techniques and equipment are applied in this field. The principles of the characterisation of wastes and design of technologies is rather similar to the classic mineral processing. Nevertheless, the diversity of the wastes and their complex composition and properties, as well as their environmental impact requires a special approach.Solar elements have sandwich structure of glass substrate and cover, as well as a very thin semiconductor layer. CdTe semi-conductor can be recycled by flotation. Within the RESOLVED (LIFE European Framework) R&D project on the recycling of solar elements the surface properties of pure CdTe semiconductor and pure glass were investigated by the measurements of zeta-potential using Zeta PALS Brookhaven instrument at University of Miskolc. Applied surfactants were: potassium ethyl xanthate; the anionic oxhydryl Aero Promoter 825 or Flotinor SM 35; the cationic Armoflote 43 or Armoflote 64, as well as Hostaflot LET (dithiophosphoric acid diethyl ester) and Hostaflot M91 (mercaptobenothiazole). The tested electrolyte was sodium-silicate. Zeta-measurements were carried out in full pH-range. Interfacial interactions were detected and interpreted. The basic results were verified by the flotation kinetic tests.Finally, the flotation technological experiments were carried out at a semi-technical scale using the real obsolete solar elements. The particle size at the liberation degree of 98% was as fine as below 5 µm. A special flotation cell providing the generation and distribution of very fine air bubbles was built. The pre-concentrate for the manufacturing of the test solar module was performed and transported to the BAM Institute (Berlin), the principal co-ordinator of the Project, and then further to the First Solar (USA) where a new panel was manufactured using recycled semi-conductor."

"The lack of notch ductility in structural steel in general, and in ship plate in particular, has been the object of widespread attention in the metallurgical world since the spectacular collapse of the ill-fated S.S. Schenectady in 1943. Numerous investigations have been carried out, many new tests have been developed, and a vast amount of useful data has been published, with the result that our knowledge is now far more advanced than it was at the time of this disaster. Interest has focused largely on the medium strength steels, and the various factors which cause a normally ductile steel to behave in a brittle manner in the presence of a notch and at relatively .low temperatures have been thoroughly studied.The literature available on high-tensile steels, however, is less extensive and the present paper is intended to supplement this information. Notch toughness tests have been carried out, at the request of the R.C.N., on a high-tensile manganese steel in the form of commercial ship plate. One of the newer tests, the tear test, and the Charpy V-notch impact test, were used to examine the characteristics of plate for the construction of an ice-breaker. About 250 plates, mainly in the thickness range from 11,4 in. to 1 % in., were tested. An an-alysis of the results obtained is presented, certain aspects of the tear test are discussed, and the correlation between the two types of test is studied. On the basis of information available from casualty ships, the plates, with few exceptions, were considered to be satisfactory."
