"The Suffield mine is situated five miles southwest of the city of Sherbrooke, in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. lt is the property of Suffield Metals Corporation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ascot Metals Corporation Limited.The old Suffield or Griffith mine had been worked intermittently from 1863 to 1906, without ever producing much ore. In 1951, diamond drilling done by Ascot Metals proved over one million tons of ore in three new bodies. The average grade of this ore was 0·018 ounces of gold per ton, 2-40 ounces of silver, l ·28 per cent copper, 0·59 per cent lead, and 6-45 per cent zinc. Since then the mine has been active, producing between 300 and 700 tons daily. More recent exploration has found continuations of the ore zones.General GeologyThe ore of the Suffield mine is found in porphyritic rhyolites of the Sherbrooke group (Silurian), at or close to its contact with sediments of the Beauceville group (Ordovician). The contact shows pronounced folds as well as irregularities due to erosion of the sediments prior to the outpour-ing of the lavas. On surface the general strike is north, and the dip is steeply east.The footwall sediments consist of interbedded black graphitic slates and. dark-coloured chloritic quartzite, overlain in many places by a thin bed of magnetite-hearing quartzite.The rhyolite host rock is a light grey rock, containing very abundant quartz and feldspar phenocrysts in a microcrystalline matrix of the same minerals. Some sericite is always present, especially in the vicinity of the ore zones, where the rock shows a pronounced schistosity.Several narrow basic dykes, with an easterly strike and vertical dip, cut all other formations. Most are lamprophyres, of either the monchiquite or camptonite type, but one has been identified as a diabase."

The lower Middle Devonian Sylvania Sandstone occurs in the sub-surface in the western part of Mal-den township, Essex county, Ontario. The formation is composed of well rounded, frosted quartz grains with a silica content varying from 42 to 93 per cent and the grains are cemented by carbonate, constituting up to 57 per cent of the rock. This sand-stone is not a homogeneous bed but is divided by strata rich in carbon-ate cement. The thickness of the Sylvania in Malden township varies up to a known maximum thickness of 88 feet. The lower contact with the chert-bearing Bois Blanc formation is sharp but the upper contact with the Amherstburg formation (Detroit River group) exists as a transition by a gradual downward increase in quartz grains. The Sylvania would seem to outcrop in the lake bottom near the mouth of the Detroit River dipping to the north along a broad anticline the axis of which follows the Detroit River. "An acidification circuit was installed and operated at the Agnico-Eagle Silver Division refinery in Cobalt, Ontario, for treating ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution with the purpose of recovering its cyanide and metal values. The acidification circuit was designed from parameters determined experimentally at CANMET. Available refinery equipment was assembled according to a flowsheet developed by Agnico-Eagle Mines. The process produced a regenerated cyanide solution containing >15 g/L of free cyanide, which was used for leaching gold ore at another Agnico- Eagle operation. It was estimated that the value of the recovered cyanide offset the treatment cost. BackgroundThe Silver Division of Agnico-Eagle Mines needed an economic and effective method for disposing of ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution that had remained in the plant after the operation was shut down in 1989. As a result of extensive recycling and evaporation, the solution had become practically saturated with metals, cyanide, thiocyanate, sulphate and other components, and was, therefore, an environmental liability for the company. A partial analysis of the solution is presented in Table 1. Initially, the use of cyanide destruction methods was considered by Agnico-Eagle, but the estimates indicated a considerable cost with no credits to be gained. A research project carried out by CANMET showed that a simple procedure consisting of acidification, filtration and reneutralization was the most attractive option, because it enabled the recovery of a substantial portion of the cyanide. Furthermore, the metals would be recovered in the form of a solid precipitate. The research showed that conventional AVR was not applicable because of excessive cyanide degradation and low HCN volatilization obtained with this particular solution (Riveros et al., 1996). This paper describes the procedure used to treat the concentrated cyanide waste solution and the operating practices of the large-scale acidification circuit run at the Agnico-Eagle refinery."

"The Management and Economics Society has undertaken a survey of industry practice in the evaluation of mineral projects. The survey addresses a number of issues relating to evaluation techniques, discounted cash flow methodology, and risk. Completed during the spring and summer of2005, the results provide a record of opinion at an active and vital time in our industry.The 2005 survey questionnaire was distributed by e-mail to groups and organizations around the world. There were 22 respondents out of several hundred questionnaires distributed (we gather this small proportion of respondents is typical for such surveys). The responses, although a small number, show a consistency that suggests that the survey has captured the views of the industry. The results of the survey are summarized below in series of tables and graphs.The reader is cautioned that the results are a snapshot of industry practice at a point in time as represented by a small sampling of the industry's practitioners. These results should be viewed as indicative values."

Since the 1.940's, the bulk of the ore production from the Sullivan Mine has come from pillars. These pillars, located from 100 to 2000 feet below surface, have been subjected to considerable ground pressure. Mining techniques were adopted to minimize the problems of deteriorating ground conditions. These techniques included an orderly sequential blasting of pillars along a retreat front, stage blasting of tall pillars in horizontal slices and utilization of broken pillars as "buffers". The latter two techniques involved leaving substantial tonnages of broken ore in place for as long as 4 years. Rapid oxidation of metal sulphides, with attendant heat and noxious gas generation, had occurred in a few very localized areas of the mine associated with a major water course. However, in a very short period starting in 1972, sulphide fires spread to several of the large blocks of broken ore that had been left inactive for lengthy periods. There proved to be no feasible method of extinguishing these fires, except by complete removal of the burning ore. The attendant problems of handling large tonnages of burning ore have had considerable negative impact on the mine operation. The chemical reactions involved in these sulphide fires have been studied by the mine staff to determine the conditions necessary for' initiation and propagation of the tires. Techniques to safely and efficiently handle hot ore have been implemented and refined. Lastly, and most important, mining methods at the Sullivan Mine have been revised to ensure that additional fires do not occur.

"Dominion No. 17 Colliery, of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, is located in the district of New Victoria, N.S., at the entrance to Sydney harbour.This Colliery was opened in 1882 to work a submarine area of the Harbour seam (see Figure 1). It was closed in 1921 and the mine, which has a make of water of approximately 250 gallons per minute, was allowed to fill.No. 18 Colliery, situated almost a mile to the east, was opened in 1938 to work the Phalen seam in this area with the intention, later, of driving a cross-measure tunnel to mine the section of the Harbour seam lying between No. 17 Colliery and the Princess Colliery of the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, Limited.In 1945 it became necessary to open this area in the Harbour seam and a cross-measure tunnel was driven from the existing workings of No. 18 Colliery in the Phalen seam, which underlies the Harbour seam at a depth of 500 feet.The tunnel was started in 1946 and completed in 1948. The cost of opening this section, which contained only 6 1/2 million tons of coal, made imperative the recovery of all the available coal and precluded the maintenance of the large barriers that had been left in No. 17 Colliery for impounding the water, especially as the maintenance of these barriers would have meant the loss of 885,000 tons of coal, or 12.3 per cent of the whole tonnage available. Therefore, a study was made to determine the best means to dewater the 250 million gallons of water lying in the old No. 17 Colliery."

Microalloyed steels are widely used in the oil and gas industry. They are a class of high strength, low carbon steels containing small additions of niobium (Nb), titanium (Ti), molybdenum (Mo) and/or vanadium (V). These steels have good strength, toughness and excellent weldability, which are attributed in part to the presence of nano-sized carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides. In the pursuit of developing higher strength microalloyed steels, it is of great interest to quantify the size, distribution, volume fraction and chemical speciation of these precipitates. However, characterization techniques suitable for quantifying fine precipitates are limited. Possible characterization techniques include SEM, TEM and matrix dissolution. A comparison is presented of the various techniques.

Successful demonstration of The Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process (MTMP) was achieved in November 2004 at the pilot-scale, About 30 tons of magnesium producing recipe was smelted in the DC arc furnace over a continuous operation of 8-days, Twenty-two furnace batching-tapping operations were carried out at a feed rate of 525kg/h and a smelting temperature of 1600-1700°C, The MgO content in the produced slag was as low as 6,7%, and averaged 9,2% MgO, resulting in an overall magnesium extraction of 77%, which reached 87% during good operating periods, Magnesium vapour was extracted at a rate of 70-85kg/h and was delivered to the condenser that was operated at 680-720°C, The magnesium was captured in the condenser crucible in a liquid state, allowing its prompt tapping, More than 3500kg of crude metal were produced over 15 on-line metal tapping operations, On average, a condensation efficiency of 85% was achieved during the entire testwork, which peaked at 87% during steady operations, The quality of the crude metal was similar to, if not better than, that of the Magnetherm's crude magnesium, A pre-feasibility study has indicated that the MTMP has the potential for lower capital and operating costs as compared to the electrolytic process, and therefore Mintek and its consortium partners are exploring opportunities for a commercial production facility.

Due to the increasing worldwide demand for raw materials and the resulting rise in commodity prices more expensive processing that is able to utilize complex ores becomes economically viable. This and increasing ecological awareness is why the interest in recycling and urban mining is steadily growing in Germany. In addition to that; landfills do also contain elements, which were not targeted over the period, when they were being accumulated. Examples are rare earths, indium, gallium, cadmium, arsenic, selenium and tellurium. Also copper, zinc and lead, the target components of ancient mining, can be obtained due to more effective processing and smelting technologies. Funding by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, entitled "r³ ? Strategic Metals and Minerals ? Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency" also indicates the high level of strategic interest. It is against this background that the research project "Exploitation of the Raw Material Potential of Mining and Metallurgical Tips in Respect of Sustainability as Exemplified in the West Harz Mountains (ROBEHA)" has been implemented. A major concern of this project is the possible transfer of results to landfills in other areas. Therefore the development of an expert system based on the innovative processing methods and a method manual for urban mining are the central components of the investigation. This will provide an important contribution to the cost optimization of ensuing urban mining projects. To ensure the success of landfill mining projects it is necessary to record the composition and quality of the deposits accurately. Also the environmental impact caused by landfill mining and changes in the natural and cultural landscape will be considered in a multicriteria evaluation method. Depending on their origin the tips are divided into the categories mining, processing, and smelting. The content of a landfill and thus the economic potential in terms of urban mining is dependent on the type and composition of the deposits (host rock, gangue, and ore mineral), the available processing and smelting technology, and the target components at the time of mining. Zinc, for example, was not been processed until the 19th century, when it gained attention as being material of economic importance. After such knowledge about a landfill is obtained the decision for further investigations can be made. For a total of 158 landfills in the Harz Mountains, both the volume and the approximate contents of copper, zinc, and lead has been estimated for the different types of tips within past research projects. Based on the prices of the London Metal Exchange (LME) and a euro/dollar exchange rate of 0.76 (as of 03/05/2012) and assuming a minimum density of ? ? 1.5 t/m³ a average value of 1.6 billion ? in copper, zinc, and lead can be obtained. "The Freightrain kimberlite is located on the Brodeur Peninsula, Baffin Island, Nunavut. Twin Mining is exploring the pipe and adjacent land (79 claims/655 km2) using a combination of airborne geophysics, soil sampling, diamond drilling, trenching and bulk sample processing. The pipe originally was discovered by Cominco Limited in 1975, re-evaluated in 1993 by Lumina Investment Corporation, when it was staked as the Zulu pipe, and subsequently covered by three claims in 1998 by Helix Resources who called it Freightrain.The Freightrain pipe coincides with a strong, ovoid-shaped aeromagnetic anomaly. It is the only surface exposure of kimberlite within a 30 km long linear trend of fourteen aeromagnetic anomalies that are up to 600 m in diameter.The pipe is exposed in the crater facies, near the transition into diatreme facies as indicated by the occurrence of pyroclastic kimberlite characterized by abundant olivine macrocrysts, juvenile lapilli and kimberlite autoliths set in a serpentine-calcite matrix. Olivine, Cr-pyrope garnet and chromite are the most abundant macrocrysts; clinopyroxene, ilmenite and phlogopite mica occur in minor to trace amounts. Garnet and chromite harzburgite, garnet lherzolite, garnet-spinel lherzolite and rare eclogite dominate the xenolith population.Garnet and chromite mineral chemistry indicate encouraging diamond prospectivity and that potentially diamondiferous garnet and chromite harzburgite were the principal sources of diamond in the mantle at the time of kimberlite eruption.Single clinopyroxene grains define an ~42 mW/m2 sub-continental geotherm that is rooted in the diamond stability field. This compares to a slightly hotter geotherm (~48 mW/m2) for adjacent Somerset Island kimberlites with an origin in the graphite stability field. This data accords with the general lack of sub-calcic Cr-pyrope garnet, diamond inclusion chromite and diamond in Somerset Island kimberlites."

Introduction In November, 1927, a paper was presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division by H. A. Pearse(l), in which he described the milling practice at Britannia and set forth the metallurgical results which were being obtained at that time. In the intervening four years, various changes and additions have been made in equipment and practice, which have resulted in marked improvements in efficiency and costs. These changes and their effects are discussed in the present paper. During the past few years two major changes have been made in plant equipment. The first of these was the. elimination of an intermediate crushing stage by discarding two gyratory crushers in favour of two Symons cone crushers. The latter installation-now effects in one stage a greater reduction than was formerly accomplished in two, that is, by the gyratories together with a set of rolls. The second important change in equipment took place when the original M.S. flotation machines were replaced by six Forrester pneumatic machines, so that now the flotation department consists entirely of machines of this type. A number of minor changes and some further additions to equipment have also been effective in raising plant capacity and concentrate grade, while making noticeable reductions in tailing losses and costs of ore treatment.

Although the exact date of the commencement of such activities in India is not certain, Indians are known to have been familiar with gold, silver, copper, tin and lead and to a lesser extent with iron at least since the Vedic period (Table 1).

The microstructure of commercially pure aluminum was investigated by using polarized optical microscopy (POM), orientation imaging microscopy (OIM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Specimens were deformed in torsion at 400°C and equivalent strain rate of 0.1 s-1, to various strains of 0.2, 0.5, 1, 4, and 6. The results indicate that POM can usefully reveal grain and subgrain structures over a large field in aluminum. TEM is most suitable to study dislocation substructure and evolution of subgrains. While TEM microscopy and OIM are capable of resolving individual subgrains, OIM can not reliably distinguish subgrains with small misorientations, particularly in samples with low strain. On the other hand, the OIM technique is very useful in the analysis of many regions surrounded by high, medium, and low angle boundaries (HAB, MAB, LAB). Various misorientation maps were studied using different data processing methods. The analysis revealed that the subgrain size is relatively insensitive to strain. The fraction of low LAB ( < 5°) decreased and HAB (>15°) increased conversely with increasing strain, whereas MAB (5-15°) remained stable. The development of an increasingly bimodal grain boundary misorientation distribution is consistent with the predominance of dynamic recovery (DRV) in the evolution of microstructure, combined with geometrical dynamic recrystallization (gDRX), now called grain-refining DRV.

Canada&apos;s only current tungsten producer started up in 1962 with a small open-pit mine on the Flat River , 180 air miles north of Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. The orebody was in a contact-metamorphic skarn zone and contained about 1.5 million tons of ore grading an estimated 2.47% W03 and 0.5% copper. Near the end of the open pit , a new zone was discovered on the lower limb of the same structure, and the decision to go underground was made in 1972. The new "E Zone" contains over 4 million tons of ore grading an estimated 1.6% W03 and 0.28% Cu , and has been supplying the concentrator at about 175,0 00 tons/ year since late 1974. A continuing program of change and up-grading is necessary in the conversion from a seasonal open-pit mine with limited life to an underground operation with twenty years of reserves. Changes are necessary in plant and services as well as the mine. Also, environmental protection requirements have changed from rudimentary to rigorous over the life of the operation. This paper sums up the changes in the operation since 1971 and outlines the changes yet to come.

The Mobrun VMS deposit in northwestern Quebec does not fit the classic Noranda type model, but exhibits characteristics more consistent with a Mattabi-type deposit. The orebodies are underlain by fragmental volcanic rocks indicative of explosive volcanism in shallow water. Felsic volcanic rocks are more abundant than mafic rocks. Alteration assemblages comprise chlorite, carbonate, sericite, and quartz. Broad semi-conformable alteration occurs high in the footwall to the 1100 lens. Mobrun occurs higher in the stratigraphic sequence than most of the other deposits in the Noranda camp. In this part of the stratigraphy, zones of pervasive carbonatization may be more useful guides for exploration than zones of silicification.

"Given the results of triaixial tests, regressions are commonly used to evaluate the parameters of failure criteria that model intact rock strength and to perform statistical inferences used to evaluate characteristic values defined in EC7. Statistical robustness of these inferences is affected if the basic hypothesis underlying regression are not met, namely homoscedasticity (constant variance of the errors). This paper presents analyses of 23 sets of triaxial tests, starting by the evaluation of the regression parameters of the Mohr-Coulomb linear criterion and of the Hoek-Brown non-linear criterion, followed by carrying several statistical tests to check the homoscedasticity null hypothesis of independence between the variance of intact rock strength and the confining stress.INTRODUCTIONThough rock engineering design is clearly included in the scope of Eurocode 7(EN1997-1), its implementation raised a wide discussion regarding the applicability of structural safety concepts to geotechnical design of construction works in or on rock masses. The basis of the limit state design philosophy adopted in EC7 is that, for each particular design situation, all the possible limit states for a structure, or part of it, shall be considered and that it shall be demonstrated that the likelihood of any limit state being exceeded is sufficiently small. Though EC7 allows the limit states to be verified by one or a combination of methods, use of calculations is by far the most used, and it is often confused with the EC7 itself. It involves using characteristic values of actions, ground properties and geometrical data, as well as obtaining their design values by the partial factor method.Characteristic value of a given material property is defined in Eurocode (EN 1990) as: “value of a material or product property having a prescribed probability of not being attained in a hypothetical unlimited test series. This value generally corresponds to a specified fractile of the assumed statistical distribution of the particular property of the material or product”. As regards the design value of a material or product property, according to the Eurocode it is a “value obtained by dividing the characteristic value by a partial factor”."

"Abstract — Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite."

INTRODUCTION THE problem of mechanization is one of the most vital in the minds of Alberta coal operators today. In these times of constantly increasing operating costs, any way of decreasing the cost of a ton of coal must be explored to the limit. There seems no better field for such effort than the successful application of power to the mining and loading of coal. We are fortunate in having neighbours to the south who have made .remarkable progress in recent times along these lines. Higher tonnages per man have resulted in higher wages to the employee and lower cost to the employer. It might seem that our problems could be solved merely by imitating our neighbours. Unfortunately, neither practice nor experience substantiate this conclusion. It is with the purpose of reviewing our accomplishments, as compared with practice in the United States, and at the request of the Prgoramme Committee for this meeting, that this paper is written. The Committee believes that such a general discussion and comparison may well lead to further advances in our mining methods. SUMMARY OF PRACTICE IN THE UNITED STATES A visit to the highly mechanized coal mines of the United States is always most instructive and encouraging.

The HNIA field is part of the Tinrhert project which consists of developing 17 fields containing essentially gas with a few small rings of oil. It is considered as one of the main fields in this project in terms of its area and the number of geological structures that has formed it. It is a wide anticline of Cambro-Ordovician age, orientated NNE-SSW and located in the South-eastern part of Illizi basin. This structure extends from Alrar-center in the North, to the North of In Amenas in the South. The area is 1350 km2. The main reservoirs forming HNIA field are the Devonian (F2, F3 and F4), Siluro-Devonian (F6) and Cambro-Ordovician. These latest are formed by 4 sandy units alternated by layers of shale and shaly silt termed from the base to the top as follow: Unit II, Unit III-3U, Unit IV-2L and Unit IV3; these units are the subject of this study. The HNIA field is essentially gas, up to day this field is at the stage of appraisal and evaluation in order to establish a development plan; therefore the main target of this study is to contribute to this frame work. The following objectives are: ?To build a structural model of the study area. ?To integrate all the sedimentological, structural and petrophysical data in order to build a 3D geological model
