"The centrifugal slurry pumps feeding cyclones are critical components used in the grinding process. It is well known that for this type of pumps the performance degradation is very intense. To minimize downtime a complete stand-by slurry pump is always installed in a parallel circuit. The replacement decision of slurry pumps is sometimes set on specific periods of time that are empirically determined, based on previous experience; unless a pump failure triggers the second (standby) pump. Given the significant energy costs in the grinding process and a desire to increase competitiveness, engineers and scientists started research in this field while manufacturers also took actions in order to improve pumps reliability and performance. The lack of standardization regarding the methods used to benchmark and evaluate the energy performances of cyclone slurry pump systems in the mining industry makes it difficult for an enterprise to take informed decisions concerning the replacement or optimization of its process based on energy benchmarking of such slurry pump systems. This paper proposes a new methodology of benchmarking slurry pump performances using a new concept of Benchmark Energy factor (BEF) based on Mathematical Model Benchmarking. The concept of BEF has been proven successful in other industries. A new standard addressing the guidelines for benchmarking the energy performance of slurry pumps for cyclones was proposed within the Canadian Standards Association. This standard will provide a unified and consistent methodology for performing measurement activities with the ability to measure and verify the system energy performance in the field through the BEF approach. Apart from a few sketches and incomplete maps, mainly topographical, and one or two detailed maps of placer-creeks, there is little information on the topography and geology of most of the country adjacent to the sections of the Alaska Highway in the Liard River area, particularly that part east of Kechika river. In 1943, the Geological Survey of Canada made a recon-naissance from Fort Nelson clown the river of that name to the Liard, thence up the latter to Hell Gate, and also up Beaver river for a distance of fifty miles. The whole of the area covered was found to be underlain by sedimentary rocks, not a single igneous dyke being seen. The British Columbia Department of Mines began reconnaissances near the highway both in and north of the drainage basin of Prophet and Muskwa rivers with a view to finding structures favourable for the accumulation of oil. In Liard River valley near the mouth of Smith river and at intervals from there clown to Devil' s Portage occur warm springs whose character and origin are not definitely' known, since they have not been investigated (21, p. 38A). Similar springs are said to occur at several localities over a broad belt extending from Muskwa river across the Liard to the Nahanni River country (26, p. 11). On Liard river below the mouth of Dease river, stratified sands, gravels, and clays of Pleistocene (?) age are constantly met with and in one or two places are underlain by sandy clays. The distribution of the latter, however, is very limited in the section cut by the river west of the Rocky mountains. The only range of these mountains that reaches the Liard is the high limestone ridge which approaches the mouth of Vents river from the southeast and then almost vanishes a few miles to the northwest of it (27, pp. 43-45). In general, the ranges of the Rockies in the area under consideration have been but little explored, but they are undoubtedly very largely sedimentary and, with the exception of some volcanics and intrusives on their western flanks, are probably almost entirely so. Unlike the high, deeply incised ranges in southern British Columbia, they dwindle in elevation north of Terminus mountain to low-wooded ridges separated by wide swampy valleys, and practically lose their identity between it and the Liard. The foothills, which, along the Liard, have a width of 38 miles (from near the mouth of Trout river to Hell Gate) are composed of a great series of alternating shales and sandstones, with some limestones, all folded closely together, which resemble those found in the foothills farther south (27, pp. 50, 19-20).

MINE ventilation has for many years been the subject of intensive study by numerous investigators who have presented their findings in forms that are understandable to the average mining man, and all this writer hopes to do is to review those findings in relation to the 'manager's' problem in mine ventilation. It would not, perhaps, be wholly correct to acclaim practical mine ventilation as an exact science, because of the many variables entering into the problem. Each mine has its own particular problem and ventilation characteristics. Fan design, in contra distinction to mine ventilation, is an exact science, but the designer cannot always take into proper consideration the practical variations to which each mine is subject. Fan designers, accordingly, are forced to base their design on such data as the mine manager or engineer is able to supply, and, when it is borne in mind that the mine characteristic is constantly changing, it is not at all surprising that fans do not always show efficiencies hoped for. In many instances, fans work far beyond the de-signer's limitations, and, in consequence, are an economic disability in the colliery cost-sheet, and it is of paramount importance that the colliery manager evaluate all the factors involved in relation to fan performance for the colliery to receive full benefit from its investment.

"Quelques soixante-dix-sept plutons présents dans la Sous-Province de Pontiac et dans la partie centrale de la Sous-Province de I’Abitibi ont fait I ’objet d’une reconnaissance systématique. Ils ont été regroupes en huit suites plutoniques majeures et trois suites mineures à partir de critères géologiques et petro logiques. Parmi les suites majeures, quatre représentent I' activité intrusive la plus ancienne dans la région. L’une d' entre e/les est représentée par deux complexes anorthosito-gabbroi' ques lites et les trois autres comprennent les orthogneiss dioritiques a leucotonalitiques et les intrusions dons la composition varie de diurétique et granodioritique à leucotonalitique. Leur mise en place peut être pretectonique a syn ou tarditectonique; certains plutons sont synvolcaniques. Quelques data/ions U! Pb effectuées à propos de ces roches donnent des âges s' étalant entre 2 718 et 2 694 MA. Les données géochimiques indiquent la présence des deux lignées magmatiques, tholemique et calcoalcaline bien qu’il n'y ait aucune évidence de relations entre elles dans I' espace et dans le temps. Ces suites magmatiques différentes peuvent provenir soit d’une croute tholemique impliquée dans un processus de subduction soit directement du manteau.Les trois autres suites majeures comprenant des monzodiorites, des granodiorites et des monzonites ainsi que les deux suites mineures comprenant des syenites correspondent à un évènement intrusif plus jeunesse déroulant entre2 694 et2 680 MA. Ces roches sont syn, tarti a post tectoniques et sont enrichies en alcalins, Ba, Sr et terres rares legeres par rapport aux quatre suites précédentes. Leurs caractères chimiques prop res suggèrent qu' e/les proviennent d' une source différente par rapport à celle precedemment citee.La derniere suite plutonique majeure correspond a un monzogranite leucocrate, riche en pegmatite, également syn a tard tectonique, dont I' age n' est pas connu avec précision. ll représente le seul granite ""vrai"" de la région et dérive d’une anatexie soit des meta sédiments soit des granodiorites-tonalites plus anciennes. La troisième suite plutonique mineure correspond a quatre stocks de granodiorite porphyrique qui n’ont pas été étudiés en détail.ABSTRACTSevenly-sevenplutons have been identified in the east-centra/part of the Abitibi Subprovince and adjacent Pontiac Subprovince. These have been subdivided, on the basis of geological and petrological criteria, into eight major and three minor plutonic suite. Four of the major suite, which represent the oldest intrusive activity in the area, range in composition from dioritic-leucotonalitic orthogneisses to diorite-granodiorite/leucotonalite and include two layered anorthosite- gabbro complexes. Their time of emplacement ranges from pretectonic to syn-late-tectonic and some plutons are synvolcanic. U-Pb zircon ages for these rocks range from 2 718 to 2 694 Ma. Geochemical data indicate the presence of both calc-alkaline and tholeiitic magma series for these rocks although there is no evidence time and space relationships between the two. The different magma series also suggest the derivation of these rocks from two sources, either from subduced tholeiitic crust or directly from the mantle. Three major monzodiorite-granodiorite, monzonite, and two minor syenite suites comprise a younger inlrusive event ranging from 2 694 to 2 680 Ma in age. These rocks are syn-, late- to post-tectonica and, compared to the above four plutonic suites, are enriched in alkalis, Ba, Sr and light Rare Earth Elements.Their distinctive geochemistry suggests that these rocks were derived from a different source region than for the older plutonic suites. The remaining major plutonic suite consists of leucocratic, pegmatite-rich, monzogranite-granodiorite. These rocks are also syn- to late-tectonic but their ages are not known with precision. They are the only ""true"" granites in the area and were derived by the partial melting of either older"

"The Upper Mannville unit commonly consists of interbedded marine and non-marine sands and shales, but in northwestern Alberta the unit consists of marine shales of the Spirit River Formation. A thick tongue of marine shale (Clearwater Formation) ex-tends eastward into the Athabasca area below sandy Grand Rapids beds. Correlation of Upper Mannville rocks to the southeast is difficult, but in the Cold Lake area a thick sandy depositional cycle (Mannville ""C"" of this paper) appears to be approximately correlative with the Clearwater Formation. In the Lloyd-minster region, tongues of marine sedimentary rock occur in the lower part of the Upper Mannville unit. Most of the Upper Mannville oil occurs in the Grand Rapids Formation at Wabasca, in the thick ""C"" unit and younger Mannville sands at Cold Lake, and in the Sparky and General Petroleums sands of the Lloydminster region (Figure 2).The Lower Mannville unit was deposited on an erosional surface of considerable relief that truncated the Jurassic and older strata of the Western Canada basin. Continental, probably fluviatile, sedimentation persisted over much of the Western Canada basin during deposition of the Lower Mannville unit, but an Arctic or Boreal sea lay over part of northern Alberta. At the end of the depositional episode, the sea transgressed southward and eastward (Figure 3) and re-worked the Bullhead and McMurray sands of northern Alberta into the glauconitic Bluesky and Wabiskaw sands. Topography on the sub-Cretaceous erosion-al surface had a considerable effect on the deposition of the Lower Mannville (Rudkin, 1965), and the highest hills on this surface were not completely on-lapped by Lower Mannville sediments (Figure 3). The coarser elastic material was derived both from a western Cordilleran region and from an eastern Canadian Shield region (Glaister, 1959, p. 620; Mellon, 1956)."

Cette présentation décrit les étapes de développement et l?exploitation souterraine au puits Penna chez Agnico-Eagle division Laronde. Les sujets suivants sont touchés : le fonçage du puits, le développement des niveaux, la méthode d?exploitation, la manutention de la roche brisée, le méthode de remblayage et la ventilation. En résumé : le fonçage du puits s?est fait sur 2,240 mètres de novembre 1995 à mars 2000. Le développement des niveaux a débuté en octobre 1998. Les opérations de minage ont débutés en août 99 dans le premier horizon situé au dessus du niveau 122. Les chantiers sont exploités par longs-trous d?environ 25 mètres de long avec un diamètre de 10 cm. Les accès à la zone minéralisée sont transverses. Le minerai est soutiré des chantiers et acheminé au passe-minerai a l?aide de chargeuses navettes. Par la suite, le minerai passe sur un marteau, est concassé et transporté sur un convoyeur, jusqu?au silo de 4,500 tonnes au-dessus de la station de chargement automatisée du niveau 152 d?ou les skips sont alimentés. Le remblai en pâte est envoyé de la surface par des trous ayant un revêtement d?acier. Le diamètre intérieur est de 15 cm. Le réseau de ventilation est principalement alimentée par des ventilateurs de surface (système aspirant et souflant) conçus pour acheminer sous-terre un maximum de 640 mètres cubes par minutes (1,350,000 pcm).

The Jinping-I double curvature arch dam, located in the middle reach of the Yalong River and with a maximum height of 305 m, is the world highest dam of the same type that has been completed. Since the second and third periods of the reservoir impounding, after which the reservoir water level was raised by about 200 m, a significant amount of leakage was observed out of the drainage holes deployed in the lowest drainage tunnel at the left-bank abutment at EL. 1595 m, with a pressure of 0.3 MPa at one typical hole when it was blocked. In this study, a number of analyses including water quality analysis, digital borehole imaging, tunnel geological mapping and in-situ groundwater monitoring were performed to investigate the source of leaking, the leakage passages and the performance of the grouting curtains. An inverse modeling procedure combining the orthogonal design, finite element forward modeling of the transient seepage flow, artificial neural network and genetic algorithm was invoked to further evaluate the permeability of the foundation rocks whose permeability was underestimated in design, using the in-situ measurements of flow rate and piezometric head. The geological structures that lead to the leakage were identified and the seepage flow behaviors in the dam foundation and the left bank abutment were assessed. Given the connectivity nature of the sub-vertically oriented fractures that induce the leakage event, it is found that some of the drainage holes with relative larger amount of discharge could be closed or blocked for reducing the amount of leakage without remarkably increasing the pore water pressure in the foundation rocks.

?Intelligent mine? conjures up a futuristic image of unmanned extractors and loaders working in harsh conditions in a remote lunar landscape. The promise of increasing mine fleet productivity and solving the problem labor shortages in mining regions can certainly be achieved today through remote controlled extraction and automated hauling. The technology is available and it doesn?t seem to be so much science fiction when Google?s self-driving cars hurtle down the freeway. ?Intelligent mining,? on the other hand, implies the application of information technology at every phase of the mining value chain, from exploration and geological modeling to equipment, operations and maintenance, and logistics and transportation. These are really industry-specific, enterprise-class software solutions focused on using information technology to support the business processes of mining and make them more efficient and effective. Overlaying the physical world with the digital or virtual world enables us to model and simulate our assets, giving us the ability to effectively design, build, and ultimately optimize the performance and reliability of our assets throughout the lifecycle. The digital asset, often a 3D model, is created initially during the engineering and construction phase, and is handed over to the operator before the mine goes into operation. Combined with geospatial or geographic information systems, the operator has a complete digital representation of the physical world, which forms the foundation for risk and performance management, along with compliance and regulatory reporting. Laser scanning and positioning technology can be used to create point clouds ? information models consisting of millions of data points ? which enable the visualization and representation of the ?as-operated? reality. But consider that once the mine is in operation, it throws off an endless stream of data in the form of performance and condition data from sensors and monitoring devices on fixed and mobile assets through networks, servers, and services. This ?big data? can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate reliability strategies as early as the design stage (e.g., reliability-centered design). ?Intelligent mining? implies that massive amounts of data augment the reality of the physical mine, plant, and equipment. This embedded intelligence can be used to optimize operational efficiency, increase asset availability and utilization, improve safety and environmental integrity, and maximize return on investment. Lastly, the sweet spot for intelligent mining is seen in the convergence of consumerization and industrialization. The application of ?consumer? technologies that we use every day on our iPhones and Android devices, such as cameras, motion sensors, and positioning in an industrial context, are producing ?immersive? experiences. Overlaying the digital world on the physical world and connecting them accurately through intelligent positioning results in ?intelligent infrastructure,? which is safer and more sustainable. Quantitative determination of gold at sub-ppm concentrations in sulphide minerals is an important component of deportment studies for sulphide-gold deposits. Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis is preferred for this application because it rapidly and cost-effectively provides spatially resolved (<20 pm), low ppb concentration data for gold and other elements in mineral grains. Recent advances in LA-ICP-MS analysis include the development and application of elemental mapping. Raw signals from multiple line scans or lines-of-spots are deconvoluted and calibrated to generate elemental maps which provide detailed information on spatial variations of gold and other elements within and between grains.

This paper addresses issues associated with ore pass degradation caused by material impact. A series of numerical experiments, using the particle flow code, were undertaken to investigate the influence of various finger raise configuration. This has allowed the identification of favorable configurations. The results of this analysis, when coupled with field observations, can contribute to the design of ore pass systems that can prolong the useful operating life of ore pass systems.

"The Normetal mine is about 7 miles east of the Ontario-Quebec boundary, and 13 miles north of the town of Dupuy on the Canadian National railway. The mine workings are largely on lots 44 and 45 in the south half of range 10, Desmeloizes township.The surface outcrop is reported to have been discovered by a trapper previous to 1925, but the details are obscure. The property was originally owned by the Canadian Exploration Company of Amos, Quebec, and was later transferred to Abana Mines, Limited. The latter Company carried out underground work from two shafts down to the 550-foot level. The property was acquired by Normetal Mining Corporation in 1931 and was reopened in 1933, when development work was carried down to the 800-foot level. The mine was closed down in 1935 because metal prices did not justify production at that time. It was reopened early in 1937 and milling commenced in September of that year. To the end of 1945, a total of 1,497,- 169 tons of ore was milled from which was produced 184,533 tons of copper concentrates containing 84,738,368 lb. copper, 2,744,100 oz. silver, 26,230 oz. gold, and 153,524 tons of zinc concentrates containing 163,752,433 lb . zinc."

A new method using a combination of comprehensive mineralogical and analytical approach which includes optical and electrical microscopy and several analytical techniques with diagnostic leaching has been used to characterize the associations and distribution of gold in a variety of minerals from the Zarshuran refractory gold ore, NW Iran. Zarshuran ore with an average of 7.9 g/t Au-grade and about 8% arsenic with gold recovery less than 20% in direct cyanidation is considered as high arsenic, high au-grade refractory gold ore. In most of the refractory ores, gold is associated with arsenopyrite and co-para genetic ore minerals, while in Zarshuran ore; gold is associated with orpiment, realgar and arsenian-pyrite. Considering its mineralogy and As content, it can be considered as the most difficult refractory ore for characterization and processing. Results from the mineralogical examination and diagnostic leaches indicate that there is only a small amount of free gold (17-19%) that is present in cyanide-soluble sulfo-arsenides compounds, predominantly orpiment and realgar. Diagnostic leaches also indicate that little gold is occluded within the silicate structure (14%). Overall, the gold is mostly included in sulfides, arsenic sulfides and sulfo-arsenides (50%). The results also have shown how the technique can be used to gain a good initial understanding of potential metallurgical problems for a refractory gold ore.

A growing problem facing geoscientists, metallurgists and process engineers is the lack of knowledge transfer between the exploration and production teams. This siloing is generally unintentional, as a typical project may change ownership several times over several decades before it reaches the feasibility and operation stages. Many exploration projects generate vast amounts of high-quality, quantitative data with great spatial resolution, but unfortunately these data are often ignored in subsequent deposit modelling. Instead, deposit models tend to rely on subjective, non-standardized, qualitative classification of geological materials (e.g. rock type, mineral abundance) and processes (e.g. alteration style and intensity), obtained through visual logging of drill core. When projects advance to feasibility studies, the required quantitative data are obtained through expensive metallurgical test work and detailed quantitative mineralogical analysis, such as QEMScan or qXRD. These detailed tests are generally only performed on a small number of large composite samples and the results are extrapolated throughout the deposit, inherently underrepresenting their true variability. Geochemical data obtained during all stages of the project provide comprehensive data coverage at much greater detail and spatial resolution, which allows for the estimation of key metallurgical performance parameters that are required for accurate deposit modelling and domaining.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to discuss in a general way the heavy oil situation in Western Canada, and particularly to acquaint those in the oil industry who have not participated in the heavy oil end of the business with past and current developments. The author has covered •briefly the location of the heavy •and asphalt-base oil fields, their geology, current drilling and production practice, the location of the •refineries capable of handling heavy crude, their products and markets, and the problems and future prospects of the industry.Location and Description of FieldsThe term heavy oil is generally used to denote crude of 20.9° gravity and under. Since the products from heavy oil are also to a lesser extent obtained from asphalt-base crudes of higher gravity, some mention will be made here of the latter; but in general the emphasis of the paper is on heavy oil as such.In the order of their production to date, the heavy oil fields and those light oil fields which produce asphalt-base crudes are : Lloydminster, Taber, Vermilion, Conrad, Princess, and Wainwright.The Lloydminster oil field has not only produced most of the heavy oil, but also is currently the largest producer, supplying at the present time about 80 per cent of the heavy and asphalt-base crudes produced in Western Canada."

Global practice in copper solvent extraction is reviewed, based on individual plant operating data for 2018. The survey respondents account for almost 40% of global copper cathode production by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Regional trends in operating conditions, as related to the prevailing ore mineralogy, leaching processes, and life of mine are evaluated. The adoption and expansion of this technology in the African Copperbelt and Asia are assessed, together with the associated challenges of specific orebody characteristics. Trends in feed and electrolyte compositions and flow rates, and extractant and diluent selection, together with their impact on copper recovery are reviewed. The evolution of equipment design and associated ancillary processes are discussed, and new projects identified. INTRODUCTION Continuing from similar surveys carried out in 1997, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2013 (Robinson, Davenport, & Jenkins, 1997; Jenkins, Davenport, Kennedy, & Robinson, 1999; Robinson, Sandoval, & Cook, 2003; Robinson, Moats, Davenport, Karcas, Demetrio, & Domic, 2007; Sole, Zarate, Steeples, Tinkler, & Robinson, 2013), global operating practice in copper solvent extraction (SX) in 2018 is reviewed. Contributing operations include established sites in the USA (8), Chile (9), Peru (2), Spain (1), Mexico (2), and Australia (2), as well as newer operations in Africa (7) and Asia (3). This survey represents 2018 copper cathode production of 1.91 Mt, or about 43% of world production by solvent extraction combined with electrowinning (SX–EW). Trends in operating conditions and performance, as well as equipment design and process technology choices are analysed. The significant expansion in production in the African Copper Belt is also discussed. There are currently about 130 operations worldwide producing some 4.6 Mt copper by SX–EW; of these, about half produced more than 10 000 t/a. Figure 1 shows global copper production by country. As it has for several decades, Chile remains dominant, with 36% of global production of cathode copper. Since 2005, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has increased production year on year, and now represents 23% of the global total (International Copper Study Group, 2017; Statistica, 2018). Copper production in Asia has grown significantly in the past decade, particularly since the ramp-up of Wanbao in Myanmar. There used to be numerous small copper SX plants in China (Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011), although most of these have now shut down and Chinese production is lower than it was five years ago. The most important trend, however, is the rise of Chinese-owned mining companies, particularly in Central Africa, but also around the world more generally.

"IntroductionMANITOBA'S first recoverable oil was from the California Standard Daly 15-18 well in Lsd. 15, Sec. 18, Twp. 10, Range 27, W.P.M., completed early in 1951. This well also gave the first indications of commercial production in the Williston basin, which is centred in North Dakota and extends into southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba. Subsequent drilling in the Manitoba portion of the basin has revealed the presence of oil in more or less commercial quantities at various points in an area approximately four townships in width and eleven townships in length.Although completions are becoming fairlly widespread in the area,, the greatest activity is in the Virden district, with the focal point in the Daly field, approximately eight miles west •of Virden. This paper will deal with the various techniques used in the Daly field, where •completion problems have •been unusually troublesome. Techniques evolved there have already been used with success at other points in southwestern Manitoba.Daly FieldGeneralTo date, all production has been from the Mississippian limestone, which is encountered •at depths ranging from 2,300 to 2,500 feet. Pay thickness is •of the order of 100 feet. Core analyses indicate average porosity .of about 9 per cent but permeabilities, for the most part, are extremely low."

"The agitator design for nickel high pressure acid leach autoclaves (HPAL) is critical with regard to the process result, i.e., the recovery rate. Further considerations during the design phase are the avoidance of acid hot spots which reduce the lifetime, due to corrosion of the wetted parts, including components manufactured from titanium. Besides the process knowledge to design HPAL autoclaves, tools such as, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) supplemented by lab testing allow the design of optimized agitation systems. This paper describes the effect that different feed point locations have on instantaneous blending of the reactants. Furthermore, experiments and CFD show where abrasion issues might occur and how to obtain information about the static and dynamic forces acting on internals. We show how simulations can be validated by lab testing to ensure that the CFD models are applied in an appropriate way.INTRODUCTIONAgitated systems in hydrometallurgical processes have to comply with multiple process tasks and in many cases have to withstand extreme operation conditions such as pressure up to 50 bar, elevated temperatures of up to 250°C and exposure to very acidic or alkaline environments and abrasive ores. The process tasks range from instantaneous mixing of reactants, homogeneous suspensions of up to 65% wt. solids with coarse and heavy particles, enhancing the solid-liquid mass transfer for leaching, dispersing large volumes of reactants (gas-liquid, liquid-liquid mass transfer) and moreover to transport generated heat e.g., from exothermic reactions through the vessel walls or internal heat exchangers if required. For economies of scale, agitator systems have reached sizes of 5000 m³ for large open leach tanks with impeller diameters of approx. 6 m, while autoclaves nowadays have exceeded 5.5 meters in diameter with a power demand for a single compartment drive between 300 - 400 kW. In parallel all process industries require a more efficient use of resources, to generate less by-products and higher yields, while ore-bodies tend to be less qualitative and new process routes (e.g. direct leach) are developed. Besides all these facts the mixing solution must be robust and economic. In this paper we want to address our approach in the development and designing of HPAL agitation equipment."

Open-cut method is most widely used for shallow utility lines installation. In urban areas, unexpected utility lines buried underground potentially turn open-cut construction into a highly risky operation, increasing the construction cost while presenting additional safety hazards. Examples include: breaking existing water main leads to flooding the downtown area; hitting an unexpected gas line causes an explosion. To prevent those accidents, the current practice is to stake out the underground utility lines before the open-cut construction based on the as-built information collected from various utility companies and government agencies. However, the as-built information is not always complete and accurate. To verify the locations of some important utility lines and protect them against damages caused by open-cut construction, new techniques and technologies are used but have their limitations in revealing underground utility lines, such as hydro vacuum method and ground penetration radars (GPR). The emerging technology of ultra-wide band (UWB) radar holds the potential to provide a cost-effective, non-destructive detection method. In this paper, a critical review of current practices and established methodologies is given. The functionality and working mechanism of UWB radar technologies are described. Application potential in open-cut construction is demonstrated by conducting lab experiments. Testing set-ups for detecting unexpected utility lines in soil along with preliminary results are presented. The effects of soil moisture content on the detection range are discussed. Research findings are summarized and constraints are discussed in conclusions.

Stonegate Agricom Ltd. is currently conducting exploration and development drilling of the Paris Hills Phosphate Project (Paris Hills Project) located in Bear Lake County, southeastern Idaho, 3.2 km west of the towns of Paris and Bloomington, Idaho. The project is located adjacent to a highway and 19 km by paved highway to Montpelier, Idaho where the Union Pacific Railroad system is located. Power and water are available locally. The nearest metropolitan centre is Salt Lake City, Utah approximately 225 km by road to the south-west of the property. The Paris Hills Project encompasses an area of approximately 856 hectares. Property holdings consist of three (3) patented lode mining claims and 16 contiguous fee parcels (some with federal phosphate leases). Active open pit phosphate mining operations are located in surrounding counties in south-east Idaho and are owned and operated by Agrium Inc., Monsanto Company and J.R. Simplot Company. The Paris Hills Project is located near the centre of the Western Phosphate Field which constitutes the most extensive phosphorite beds in the United States. Phosphate beds of the Western Phosphate Field occur within the Phosphoria Formation of Permian age and extend over an area of more than 350,000 km2 including extensive areas of Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. At Paris Hills the phosphate mineralized beds occur in the overturned limb and the horizontal limb of the Paris Syncline. Grades and thicknesses in both the western overturned limb and the eastern horizontal limb of the anticline are similar. The vast majority of potential mineralization occurs in the horizontal limb which underlies most of the property holdings. Mineralization in the overturned limb has a strike length of over three (3) kilometres and extends from the surface to a depth exceeding 300 m depending on location along the north-trending strike of outcrops. Depths of the horizontal limb range from surface along the north side of Bloomington Canyon to estimated depths of 915 to 1,035 m at Paris Canyon. The property contains an Inferred resource of 109.6 million tonnes at 23.6% P2O5 over two mineralized horizons. The phosphate zones have a strike length of over 3 km and extend from surface to a depth of at least 900 m. Drilling commenced late in the 3rd quarter of 2010 and is planned to continue through 2011. The drilling was planned to target an area of potentially higher grade phosphate mineralization and better define and upgrade the current resources.
