"An initial test of this unique application demonstrated that hot gunned refractory would adhere satisfactorily. Subsequently, it was found that the proportion of material sticking during application increased with increased vessel temperature and when a mix containing pitch was used. About 75 per cent of the latter type adhered when it was applied at 1600°C.TBRC availability increased from an historical average of 62.5 per cent to 64.7 per cent during four campaigns when hot gunning was routinely practiced. Refractory cost was about 20 per cent less than that anticipated without gunning. Average parameters per campaign with gunning ranged as follows: 90 to 108 heats, 10 to 37 applications and 1.4 to 2. 7 hours per application. Prior to gunning, the average number of heats per campaign was 73.IntroductionThe Top Blown Rotary Converter process at Inco's Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery converts copper-nickel-sulphur concentrates to a material suitable for carbonyl refining (1),(2).Operating conditions are particularly hard on refractory. Batch cycles finish at temperatures up to 1650°C, with occasional excursions over 1700°C. New heats are then usually initiated immediately and the refractory is subjected to intense thermal shock from the cold feed. Temperature cycles are also introduced three to four times during a heat when the process is interrupted for scrap charging, temperature measurement or sampling.Abrasion wear results from rotation of the converters at speeds up to 15 RPM and from agitation of the bath with supersonic-velocity oxygen. Mechanical damage also occurs when chunks of scrap or solid matte are processed. Chemical corrosion is also present, as we know from our own laboratory work(2) and reports of operations elsewhere. As a consequence, refractory material and installation form a very large proportion of the converter plant costs. Equally important is the loss of converter availability during rebricking; this significantly reduces plant capacity."

"Loading and transportation are important activities of the mining process. Automation of these activities in underground hard rock mining has been discussed for a long time. This paper deals with the performance evaluation of a prototype automatic Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) vehicle (a 7-ton GHH LF LHD model) operating in Zinkgruvan mine, Sweden. The purpose of the data analysis is to evaluate the operational and maintenance characteristics of the automatic LHD system in the mine. Graphical and numerical methods have been used for the statistical analysis of the data. IntroductionDuring the past years, the idea of integrated automation and tele-operation on Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines (Fig. 1) has attracted considerable interest in the Swedish mining industry. This is mainly due to the demand for improvement in the working environment and due to the rapid development of economic and reliable microprocessors for mining vehicles. Several advantages can be foreseen with the application of a Remote-controlled/Automatic LHD (RAL) system in underground mining. Some of them are (1)':• better utilization of working hours;• less interruption in production at shift changes;• better operational control of a fleet of vehicles;• improved safety; and• one operator may be able to operate more than one vehicle simultaneously."

"Breccias with angular and rounded clasts of a late-mineralization, ""barren"" hornblende porphyry dike set within a comminuted matrix consisting of rock fragments and quartz, cemented by quartz and K-feldspar of hydrothermal origin is observed in diamond drill cores from the Sar Cheshmeh porphyry copper deposit. Studies of age relationship between vein types, phyllic-altered clasts and the breccia groundmass suggest that the brecciation is a late event. The breccia clasts record evidence of hydrothermal reaction between the clasts and fluids responsible for the brecciation.Formation of bornite, in the breccia clasts of the originally barren hornblende porphyry dike, and in the breccia matrix, along with the scarcity of bornite in the Sar Cheshmeh deposit itself suggest involvement of fluids which are later and of different composition from the fluids responsible for the known mineralization at Sar Cheshmeh. These later fluids may be related to a later plutonic event and suggest the possibility of a later, and concealed deposit."

"To properly operate a mineral beneficiation plant it is often necessary to have systematic evaluations of the performances of a piece of machinery, of one of the processes or of the plant as a whole. The state of a process can be described from a collection of data: flow-rate values, particle-size distributions and chemical compositions of the various streams of the circuit studied.However, the obtained raw data are generally redundant and inconsistent from a material balance viewpoint, due to natural disturbances, sampling errors, unreliable instrument readouts and laboratory analysis inaccuracies.BILMAT is a computer program which upgrades mineral processing data, adjusting them in a least-squares sense in order that they may verify material conservation constraints. As a consequence, the program is able to calculate the best values of unmeasured flow rates (such as. circulating load ratios). BILMAT is a very general program in the sense that it can accept various data from any type of mineral processing circuit, and its usefulness is demonstrated here for three processing circuits of a pyrochlore concentration plant: grinding, desliming and flotation.IntroductionComputation of the material balance around any metallurgical process, that is the determination of stream flow rates and composition. is a basic step in its evaluation. In spite of the simplicity of the physical laws of mass conservation. and of the very fundamental need to know the flow of components around a process. it appears, particularly in mineral processing. that material balancing is quite often a difficult task. The reasons for this involve the problems associated with collecting measurements in mineral dressing plants. They are generally poorly instrumented and invariably data must be collected through hand sampling. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the streams, segregation occurs and samples are often not adequately representative, a problem made worse by the lack of circuit sampling facilities, which are often completely ignored by plant designers. Furthermore, the nature of the measurements to be performed (for instance particle size distributions in the fine range) frequently gives inaccurate results."

This research project which took place at Brunswick Mining and Smelting's Brunswick mine, was undertaken to assess the ability of new diesel engine technology to meet current and anticipated underground worker exposure limits to diesel exhaust contaminants. Concentrations of CO, CO2 NO, NO2 SO2 and respirable combustible dust (RCD) were measured in a remote mine area where a haulage truck was operating under simulated duty cycles. The 26 ton haulage truck was equipped with a 300 hp, electronically controlled engine. Fresh air was supplied to the area as per the MSHA certification document for this particular engine. Results showed that while the vehicle operated in a normal and realistic duty cycle, the concentrations of contaminants remained well below the ACGIH guidelines for the threshold limit values (TLV)for exposure. While operating at 630/0 of maximum horsepower (26 tons of ore in the dump), the time-weighted average exhaust gases concentrations (CO, CO2 NO, NO2 and SO2) never exceeded 150/0 of their respective TL Vs. ReD concentrations in this instance were measured at 0.59 mg/mJ or 39.30/0 of the exposure limit suggested by the Canadian ad hoc Diesel Committee. The Air Quality Index was 1.55 or 520/0 of the maximum suggested value for exposure.

"Graphite is one of the most versatile of non-metallic minerals because of its diversified properties, for example: it is unctuous; it marks readily; burns slowly; is almost chemically inert; is flexible over a large temperature range; is a good conductor of heat and electricity; is hydrophobic; has a negative temperature coefficient of resistivity; has excellent weathering properties; tends to emulsify with water-in-oil; is readily soluble in iron; and after oxidative treatment, can exfoliate like vermiculite. These properties give rise to its major uses in lubrication, refractories, marking instruments, electrical products and paints.Flake graphite is the variety which commonly occurs in Canada; the provinces of Ontario and Quebec contain the deposits of economic significance, although graphite occurs in other provinces. The beneficiation of graphite has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, thus reflecting graphite 's importance as an industrial mineral. Thirty-eight studies relating to various aspects of beneficiation were conducted between 1918and 1989anda review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information includes mineralogy, beneficiation methods and results; flotation parameters and reagent concentration data are presented in tabular form. By so arranging the principal data, the research worker and production metallurgist will be assisted in the evaluation of graphite ores from a variety of origins."

ABSTRACTThis paper describes the main testing procedures that should be carried out to evaluate the capacity and capability of the service brakes on the large-size diesel-electric trucks now in common use at open-pit mining operations. Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. The paper examines the problems that arise in undertaking socio-economic impact studies to meet the requirements of environmental-impact legislation governing new mine development or expansion. An approach to undertaking socioeconomic impact studies is outlined, responses to specific problems are discussed and ways in which the mining company can use these studies to meet its general objectives are explored. The paper concludes by examining how a socio-economic study, as required by legislation, can be used to assist the mining company in achieving some general objectives it will have in developing a mine.

"The uranium deposits upon which the Rabbit Lake project story is based are located at the eastern margin of the Athabasca Basin just west of Wollaston Lake in northern Saskatchewan. This paper provides a general review of the exploration history for the major deposits and the influence of an expanding geological data base, which served to guide the continuing exploration programs.A brief description of each of the deposits is provided in order of their discovery and with emphasis upon their relative geological and mineralogical characteristics.The Rabbit Lake and Eagle Point orebodies are monometallic uranium deposits localized by thrust faults within the Aphebian Wollaston Group. The Cof/ins Bay A-zone, B-zone, and D-zone are polymetaflic U, Ni, As, Co (Au , Ag) deposits located within the Helikian Athabasca Group at its unconformable contact with the underlying Wollaston Group. INTRODUCTIONThis paper demonstrates the importance of applying the accumulated geological knowledge, gained through the exploration, mining, and development process, to the ongoing success of exploration programs. To emphasize this point, the basic geology of each of the major Rabbit Lake area deposits will be presented in chronological order of their discovery and subsequent development. These depos its include Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point. The geological descriptions are based primarily upon the detailed observations of many current and former geologist s employed by both Gulf Minerals Canada Limited and Eldorado Resources Limited. Much of the early historical data was obtained from Dr. E.E.N. Smith, formerly with Eldorado Resources Limited. Regional GeologyThe Rabbit Lake area which includes the Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposit s, is located on the eastern edge of the Athabasca Basin close to the western shores of Wollaston Lake (Fig. I). The area is in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield within the Wollaston lithostructural domain, at the eastern edge of the Athabasca Group. The uranium deposits occur within both the Wollaston Group metasedimentary assemblage of probable early Aphebian age, and the diagenetic ally altered quartz sandstones and conglomerates of the Athabasca Group of Paleohelikian age. Both units unconformably overlie granitoid gneisses interlayered with metasediments and a graphitic iron formation all believed to be of Archean age. All uranium depo sits in the Rabbit Lake area occur in close proximity to the Paleohelikian - Aphebian or Paleohelikian - Archean unconformity."

As a result of the dramatic growth of Edmonton, Alberta during the past decade and the rapidly increasing price of natural gas, Edmonton Power has received provincial government approval to construct and operate an 8O0-megawatt- capacity coal-fired thermal generating station at Genesee, about 50 km southwest of Edmonton. The power plant will consist of two 400-megawatt steam-driven thermal generators, with provision in the future for two or more additional units. The coal will be hauled by truck from the nearby three-million-tonnes- per-year strip mine, with economically recoverable reserves exceeding two hundred million tonnes. Edmonton Power controls a major part of the coal leases in the area, and is working with other lease holders in developing the most efficient mining plan. A natural depression was selected as the site for the 600-hectare cooling pond to provide water for the power plant. Edmonton Power is working closely with the people in the area to ensure that their rights and concerns are communicated and recognized by all parties.

"The main object of ore reserve classification is to assess the reliability of an ore reserve estimate. Because traditional classification schemes fail to provide a means of calculating this reliability, the terms 'proven "" 'probable' and 'possible ' ore were introduced as an attempt to qualify it.Geostatistics, on its part, allows the quantification of the precision of any ore estimate and thus appears as an appropriate tool for ore reserve classification.However, the problem of fixing quantitative boundaries for ore classes remains. In order to be meaningful, ore class limits based on the degree of reliability should be customized to the commodity, and the type and size of the deposit. In addition, the precision of an ore estimate will be affected by the cut-off grade and the size of selective mining units.IntroductionPrimarily, ore reserve classification should be seen as a communication tool between the geologist and the mining engineer on one hand and the management and policy maker on the other. By classifying ore reserves, the geologist tries to answer the very fundamental question: ""What quantity of metal is there in the ground and how sure am I that it really exists?""The difficult y of quantifying the degree of reliability of reserves has led to the creation of a large suite of terms and definitions, with almost every mining company having its own set of definition standards. As lower-grade deposits are brought into production, the margin of tolerable error in estimates of the grade and tonnage is becoming much narrower. Consequently, the need for unequivocal definition of the reliability of ore reserves is increasingly acute. Most of the generally accepted systems of classification, however, describe the reliability of reserves in qualitative, rather than quantitative, terms."

"The production of heavy water, the moderator in a CANDU reactor, is examined following a flow sheet of a typical Canadian plant. The process involves the extraction and concentration of deuterium from natural water through a chemical exchange mechanism with hydrogen sulphide. Consequently, corrosion problems associated with sour environments – the use of hydrogen sulphide - are an everyday problem and have led to the development of a highly refined materials selection and testing program to prevent equipment from failing prematurely.IntroductionHeavy water is a naturally occurring compound in ordinary water and is formed from the combination of two deuterium atoms and one atom of oxygen. Deuterium is a heavy hydrogen atom which has a nucleus of on e proton and one neutron. Hence, heavy water is a combination of heavy hydrogen and oxygen and is chemically known as deuterium oxide. It looks and tastes like ordinary water but it freezes at 3.8°C and boils at 101.4°C. The molecular weight of heavy water is 20 as compared to 18 for ordinary water; the density of heavy water is ten per cent greater than that of ordinary water.Although heavy water and ordinary water exhibit only small differences in their chemical and physical properties, there are large differences in their nuclear properties, the most important of which is the neutron moderating ratio, used to measure the ratio o f the slowing down power to the neutron capture characteristics. For heavy water the ratio is 21000 and for ordinary water it is 50. This high moderating ratio is essential for achieving a high neutron economy. Heavy water is, therefore, chosen as the moderating and heat transport fluid in the CANDU reactor."

"The availability of environmental data is a major concern in the development of an exploration project through the permitting and feasibility stages. The collection of these data should ideally start very early in a major exploration program. Although a large proportion of the environmental data can also be used for exploration purposes, (e.g. stream-sediment, soil, and rock analyses), environmental sampling will rarely have been initiated at an early date. For the Windy Craggy project, a major environmental concern is the potential for generation of acid rock drainage from waste-rock piles. The project is reviewed with respect to the environment of the deposit, deposit geology, mineralization and reserves, the sequence of exploration activities to the present, the potential for the development of acid rock drainage, the geochemistry and water quality, and the integration of exploration and environmental databases and their application to environmental planning. IntroductionIn the classical sense of exploration of a mineral deposit, the efforts throughout exploration are routinely directed at confirming the existence of the deposit and defining its extent, grade and continuity. Environmental issues are usually tackled separately, possibly by different personnel at a later date. When that is the case, an opportunity is lost to build, from an early date , a comprehensive database that (I) will satisfy the needs of conventional exploration and environmental monitoring, and (2) is usable as a predictive tool for environmental impact assessment.The concept of environmental geochemistry is not complex. The availability of environmental data is a major concern in the development of an exploration project to the feasibility and permitting stages. The collection of data should ideally start very early in any major exploration program. In many cases a significant proportion of the geochemical exploration data gathered early in the life of a project will also be used later for environmental purposes (e.g. stream-sediment, water, soil, and rock analyses). Rarely, however, will the data gathered in a geochemical exploration program provide information as complete as that attainable if environmental objectives had been considered in scoping the work.A knowledge both of local and regional geochemical processes can lead to a better understanding of environmental impacts. This understanding is the basis upon which good environmental management practices may be built. Geddes Resources Limited has undertaken a major study of the natural environment in the Windy Craggy area which includes geology, surface and underground waters, soils, stream sediments, glaciers and geomorphology (Geddes Resources Limited, 1990). This paper deals with the building and integration of the exploration and environmental databases."

"A computer-assisted process control system for the Noranda Process Reactor Wa5 installed at the Home smelter in 1991. Operating as an advisory tool for the furnace operators, and using a flexible oxygen balance as the basic building block of the computer program, the new control system has helped to reduce the variability in the grade of the matte produced by 50% . The smelter is currently operating at a 72% copper matte, with a standard deviation of between 1.0 and 1.3, while treating a wide range of concentrates, secondary materials and scrap. Enhanced process control has allowed for longer reactor campaigns, and improved stability of the converting operation.This paper reviews the feed classification and blending practice used at the smelter, outlines the strategy of the new computer control system, and summarizes the benefits realized since the implementation of the system in early 1990.IntroductionUntil 1989 the Noranda Home smelter operated as a multi furnace smelter, at one time having three hot-charge reverberatory furnaces, and finally operating with one wet-charge reverberatory furnace and one Noranda Process Reactor. In 1989 the final reverberatory furnace was closed and the Reactor became the sole smelting vessel, treating around 750 000 tonnes of concentrate, secondary materials, and scrap per year. At the time of the start-up of theNoranda Reactor in 1973, the vessel was capable of treating 750tonnes per day of a heterogeneous mixture of copper concentrates, fluxes and secondary materials to produce copper in one operation. Through process improvements, and the introduction of additional oxygen in 1982(pannell and Mackey, 1988), the daily tonnage increased to 1800 tonnes by 1988. The operation had also been changed to produce a high-grade matte instead of copper. Figure1 illustrates the main features of the reactor, a cylindrical vessel which is charged at one end and tapped at the other. The matteis subsequently processed through Peirce-Smith converters and anode furnaces before being cast into copper anodes. Figure 2 outlines the progressive increase in the furnace smelting capacity. Over this period the percentage of secondary materials, and scrap feeds also increased to approximately 110 000 tonnes per year, or 15% of the total new feed input (Bedard et al., 1991). Now operating wholly as a custom feed operation, the Home smelter can treat over 2200tonnes per day of new metal-bearing material."

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a powerful tool for analysing the flow of charge, the energy consumption and the pattern of energy utilisation of a SAG mill. With the development of laser scanning measurement, the detailed internal working surfaces of a SAG mill can now be included in DEM models. Using scanned results for new and worn shell liners for a 32? (9.75 m) SAG mill, it is shown that the feed and discharge lifters have significant effect on the flow of the charge introducing significant threedimensionality. The effects of the resolution accuracy of liner geometry and the lower cut-off of the rock size distribution are explored. Finally, using a matched new and end of life worn liner and operating conditions taken from site surveys, the effect of wear on charge motion, distribution and energy utilisation are evaluated.

"Gibraltar Mines Ltd. has been operating its open pit copper mine for fifteen years. In that time, over 140 million tons of waste and low-grade material has been placed on the mine waste dumps. Laboratory and in situ testing indicated that enough leachable copper was recoverable from the dumps to justify a leaching operation which would include the construction of a solvent extraction-electro winning plant. The plant, which was commissioned in October 1986, was designed to process 3000 USGPM of dilute copper solution to produce 5000 tons per year of high-quality cathode copper.This paper deals with the start-up and initial year of operation of this plant. The three areas: leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning are presented with emphasis on the innovations which were made to help overcome the problems unique to the Gibraltar operation.The Leaching CircuitThe mine waste dumps are leached to produce a pregnant copper solution as feed to the SX-EW plant. To achieve this the dumps are sprinkled with a mildly acidic solution which percolates through the dumps. In travelling through the dumps the solution contacts the surfaces of the liberated copper minerals and dissolves the soluble copper into the form of copper sulphate. The leaching reaction is achieved by a combination of bacterial action to oxidize the sulphides and solubilization of the copper into the acid solution.For the bacterial action to occur the dumps must be near the ideal pH of 1.9 to 2.1 and the necessary elements of the reaction must be present. Because a bacterial reaction is involved there is a lag time between the time when the conditions for bacterial growth are achieved and when the bacteria are in their active growth phase. Laboratory leaching tests with Gibraltar ore indicated that bacterial action takes two to three months to reach its maximum rate (Fig. I).The expected lag time for the planned rate of bacterial leaching prompted Gibraltar to start irrigating the dumps in late June 1986 for a plant start in early fall. The lag time proved to be longer than expected and the dumps took until November to start producing copper at the expected rate (Fig. 2)."

"The structural relations of the ore deposits of the Staclacona mine are of considerable interest, for they not only illustrate the effect of a change in competence of the wall-rock, but also the effect of either the convergence together of two faults, or a change in the clip of a fault, or both of these factors, on ore deposition.The mine is in claim M.L. 1818 near the eastern end of Pelletier lake and lies about 2 miles south of the town of Rouyn. The Company was organized in 1926 to explore claims in Rouyn, Dufresnoy, and Beauchastel townships, but attention was directed mainly to those in Rouyn. Underground work began in 1928 with the sinking of the main shaft to a depth of 300 feet. Except for 1930 and 1931, the mine has been in operation continuously since that time. Production, which began in 1936, up to the end of 1946 has amounted to 1,381,422 tons of ore from which gold and silver having a total value of $7,861,860 were recovered. The average grade of the ore milled in 1946 was $6.68.GEOLOGYThe rocks in which the Stadacona ore deposits occur are mainly volcanics of the (Keewatin) Abitibi series intruded here and there by numerous dykes, sills, or masses of diorite. Single dykes of olivine diabase and lamprophyre are also present in the property and are intersected in the mine workings. The volcanic rocks are part of a wide belt of northward dipping lavas and pyroclastic rocks, having a thickness of over 16,000 feet, that extend from the east-west trending belt of Timiskaming sediments on the south northward to the Horne Creek fault and form the south limb of a large syncline. The volcanic rocks within the property consist of numerous, east-west trending, northward dipping flows of andesite and a few flows of rhyolite interbedded with rhyolite ruff and agglomerate. The angle of dip throughout most of the property is 60° to 80°N., but in the main cross-cut on the 850- and 975-foot levels stratification in rhyolite tuff was noted dipping 35°N. The tuff at this point lies above an intrusive mass of diorite and it is probable that the change in dip results from the way in which the tuff and agglomerate have been thrust aside by the intrusive."

"Kidd Creek Mines places approximately 10 000 tonnes of consolidated rockfill on a daily basis. Consolidated rockfill is comprised of sized aggregate mixed with different ratio and amounts of binders. Consolidated rockfill, with closely controlled specification, is employed for subsequent pillar recovery and improved passive active/ ground support. With the same amount of cementing agents consolidated rockfill mass yields a higher, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, cohesion, and angle of friction compared to a typical cemented hydraulic fill mass.The consolidated rockfill at Kidd Creek Mines is designed to sustain not only the gravitational loading of the overlaying fill material, but also to some extent the dynamic loading applied during blasting of the adjacent stopes and/or pillars.The quality control of materials used in Kidd Creek's rockfill system could be effected in three stages of handling: (1) at the surface backfill plant; (2) during transportation; and (3) placement of the fill.The emphasis in this paper is placed on individual stope backfill design and quality control measures at Kidd Creek Mines to place fill in large-scale open stopes which eventually could be exposed on all four walls during pillar recoveries."

"At the Falconbridge Limited, Canadian Nickel Division, Sudbury Operations, we investigated the ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs model NN3-F which is a Swedish product with foam-filled sealing rings (the Hellberg Standard Volume Hearing Protector). It is used extensively at Falconbridge mines in Sudbury.The research which was carried out in the four Falconbridge mines was conducted under three different headings: manufacturer's attenuation data (psychophysical method), clamping force and head size (bizygomatic diameter), and attenuation tests (physical methods) under working conditions.Manufacturers of hearing protectors claim their products offer noise reductions of 23 decibels (NRR) or more, but they fail to point out that this reduction is obtainable only under ideal conditions. The reality of attenuation under working conditions, as several studies have found, is quite different.Methods for using short measurements to determine the noise exposure index, and for controlling muff-wearing habits, were developed at the Elliot Lake Laboratory. Measurements taken at Falconbridge on ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs revealed that they have a practical attenuation of some IO to 13 decibels. It is important to note here that measurements also revealed that clamping force (thus attenuation) was in an inverse relationship with ear muff comfort. Measuring attenuation using noise dosimeters was a difficult job. Not a single surveyor would accept these measurements (physical method) for absolute accuracy. Apart from that, it was impossible to measure, in one shift, more than two work stations. Because of this, we sought a solution: measuring head size and clamping force in relation to actual attenuations.A detailed analysis of the relationship between attenuation and head size/clamping force was done at four mines. Standard deviation ellipses (standard error ellipses) for head size versus clamping force are in close agreement with measurements that were carried out. In order to measure clamping force an apparatus was constructed and a method for measuring suspension system durability is described in Appendices Band C of this report. At the same time we sought to reduce deterioration of ear muffs in mines as well as to put in place a system whereby attenuation can be controlled and improved. The clamping force apparatus can be operated automatically. The proposed control system is quick, simple and efficient . This system is equally applicable in small and large mining operations, and it can be totally automated and the data computerized for audit of the results. This control system is a new step in controlling ear muff attenuation in working environments.From these measurements of NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs it can be concluded that ear muffs are not the total solution to protect the worker from noise.As the results were evaluated folio wing measurement, Falconbridge switched from the NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs to approximately 90% Mark V ""NO NOISE"" muffs and 10% Mark V MSA muffs. These new muffs showed much better head size versus clamping force relationship and can be expected to produce 14 dBA or better attenuation of noise. "A t remote locations typical of mines and associated ore processing plants, diesel electric generators are ideally suited for power plants due to their inherent operating flexibility, efficiency and reliability. In recent years rapid escalation in fuel and related transportation costs has made extensive waste heat recovery from generating sets financially attractive to a much greater extent than previously.The paper outlines key considerations during planning and design stages for utilizing the various waste heat sources available to best advantage. Based on two /980 mining projects built in the Canadian Arctic, data is presented on potential operating and capital costs savings. A review of heat balances, engineering flow diagrams and major equipment selections for process and building heating systems utilizing waste heat is included.IntroductionResource projects increasingly occur in remote areas requiring on-site self sufficiency in electrical power generation. For such projects, the low- or medium-speed turbo-charged diesel engine is very often the preferred choice as a prime mover for the generating sets . It is inherently reliable, has good response to load changes and has comparatively high fuel efficiency over a wide load range . From a project execution standpoint, It is capital cost- competitive and procurement lead-time normally ' fits ' within tight schedule constraints. In addition, its potential for waste heat recovery is excellent , particularly in northern climates where space heating requirements are usually substantial, and also where there a re requirements for heat for process and plant services.The high cost of fuel , with add-on transportation costs , provides a major incentive to fully exploit the available waste heat recovery potential o f such installations.As a result of the rapid escalation in the price of petroleum products following major crude oil price increases in 1973 and again in 1978-79, liquid petroleum fuels, having the desirable properties of comparatively high heat content and transportability, are no longer 'cheap' commodities and have become so valuable that industry has widely undertaken serious conservation efforts.Currently, it appears that petroleum cost trends of the 1970s may not continue, at least in the near term, and that we may see somewhat reduced energy costs for a time. In the longer term , and certainly within the life spa n of major projects, however, it is generally believed to be inevitable that these fuels will be increasingly expensive . Energy costs are today a major operating cost for remote minerals processing plants and will remain so for the foreseeable future.In order to meet the economic challenge posed by high energy costs, future projects should be thoughtfully planned from the outset with the goal of minimizing energy requirements and maximizing the use of waste heat recovery to meet such requirements. There is also considerable potential for significant energy savings by retrofitting of existing installations."
