"An interactive mine planning package has been developed to aid with the tasks involved in generating dragline mine plans. This package employs recent advances in PC-based,3D computer graphics and 3D geologic modelling. A Gridded Seam Model (GSM), capable of modelling rugged topography and multiple coal seams, including folding and faulting, is used to generate the geologic database This model is then integrated with an interactive graphics mine planning system in order to develop one model and one database for the generation of the mine design, the depletion of the coal reserves and the removal of waste material.As well as offering large potential saving in the time required to carry out the planning tasks, the system offers immediate visual feedback to the planning engineer. This can greatly aid in the conceptual understanding of complex geology and mine plans and can allow for the evaluation of a number of mining options within a reasonable time frame.IntroductionThere are a large number of variables that must be taken into account during the development of a dragline mine plan. This is especially true when developing a mine in mountainous terrain, where there is a lack of continuity of the geology and topography over the mine site. Until recently, the complexity of dragline mine plans has prohibited the development of a universal mine planning package that is applicable to all geologic and topographic situations. The majority of the commercial programs that are presently available to facilitate dragline mine planning have been developed for specific mine properties or are limited in the coal geology and mining methods that they can simulate (Brown and Clifford, 1983; White 1983; White and Jones, 1984; Sadri and Lee, 1982; Dagdelen, 1979)."

"The possibility of spoil pile failure at the Kara Kara bauxite strip mine, Guyana, South America, is of major concern to the mine operators. The current mining technique requires the continuous operation of an 11 ms bucket capacity walking dragline on top of 18 metres of freshly spoiled uncompacted overburden material consisting of varying mixtures of kaolinitic clay and quartzitic sand. A field biased geotechnical study of undisturbed overburden and corresponding spoiled material has identified site-specific, non-linear correlations between vane shear strength, standard penetration resistance and spoil pile composition. Readily available geological exploration borehole logs has enabled a composite clay isopach map of the entire mining property to be drawn and critical areas to be zoned according to expected slope stability. Stability has been assessed using simple hand calculation techniques. Use of the resulting stability map provides the mine operators with a means of forecasting the need for appropriate preventative measures at varying stages of mine development, throughout the life of the mine.A similar investigation procedure could be employed at many presently operating and future strip mines.IntroductionThe Kara Kara bauxite stripe mine is located at Linden within the bauxite belt of Guyana in South America. The mining property covers a total area of 88 hectares of flat to gently sloping ground of which some forty per cent is being actively mined or being preparatorily stripped of overburden, prior to eventual mining (George and Gordon, 1979). The regional climate is tropic and humid. Temperatures vary from 16°C to 38°C and yearly rainfall averages 2600 mm, with at least 55 per cent of this precipitation occurring during the 'wet season' months of May to July and December to January."

In this paper, the rectangular strands of Incoloy 800 superalloy were fabricated with a pilot vertical continuous caster in Northeastern University, China. In the processing, an electromagnetic stirring (EMS) is applied on the secondary cooling zone to control the solidifying structure and segregation of elements in the strands. The solidification structure of Incoloy 800 superalloy strands were investigated at different electric parameters and casting parameters. The research results show that the EMS can effectively restrain the dendrite growth and increase the ratio of equiaxed grains in Incoloy 800 superalloy strands as applied a suitable electric parameters and cooling condition in the process of continuous casting. The evolution of dendrite crystallization in Incoloy 800 alloy strands from the surface to its center during the solidifying process was investigated with and without EMS.

Adsorption/thermal desorption with sorbent cartridges and analytical method using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was developed for the determination of tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane (C2F6) emitted from primary aluminum smelters. A customized cartridge was built like a packed column with a stainless steel tube filled with a specific resin. The optimization of adsorption and desorption parameters was carried out to support the PFC sampling for all aluminum production technologies. The proposed method showed good linearity for concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 ppbv for CF4 and from 5 to 500 ppbv for C2F6 with correlation coefficients above 0.999. In certain conditions, the detection limits of the analytical method reached 0.3 ppbv for CF4 and 0.15 ppbv for C2F6- Using this methodology, a field campaign was carried out using a sequential sampler allowing the simultaneous sampling of PFC with cartridges and sampling bags. The results showed no significant difference (t-test) between the two sampling technologies and no breakthrough was observed from the cartridges .

"In this study, the authors investigated the stabilities of slopes cut predominantly into Trenton limestone in a large quarry in the Montreal region. Analyses of the bench and pit walls indicated that small-scale toppling, ravelling, and wedge failures are the most likely modes of instabilities. Because most of the joints dip steeply, however, the conclusion was made that relatively high walls could probably be justified.The field investigations were supplemented with the determinations of the shearing strengths of artificial discontinuities that were cut into samples of the limestone. The properties of a fine-grained limestone were found to be influenced very much by the magnitudes of the loads that were applied, while the properties of a crystalline limestone were found to be much less, or not load-dependent.The study is one of a number that are being conducted in this area.IntroductionExtensive quarrying has been done in the sedimentary strata of the Montreal area for a very long time. By any standards, it can be said that the Island of Montreal is a major mining area. At present, approximately 20 quarries are being operated in, or near, the city of Montreal.In addition to the millions of tons of limestone that are removed each year, a large number of excavations for foundations are cut into the sedimentary rocks.To date, however, very little information has been published concerning the engineering properties of the local geological materials. No mention is made of this aspect in the references which are presently available.Because of this lack of information, the senior author has initiated a study in which the strength properties of most of the rock types, and of the natural discontinuities contained in these, would be investigated. To date, the results of one other investigation have been published and other work is in process. It is hoped that the end result will be a comprehensive knowledge of the important strength properties of all of the rocks in the entire region."

"The Underground Test Facility (UTF) project operated by the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) north of Fort McMurray has achieved marked success in field testing mining access and horizontal well in situ recovery of bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands.Mine access has provided for effective placing and operation of horizontal wells in the oil sands from a tunnel system in the underlying limestone. Performance of the in situ recovery process, Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, has substantially exceeded forecasts made at the start of the project. Over-all results of the program to date show great promise for horizontal well in situ technology as a competitive source of bitumen from Alberta's vast oil sands deposits. The potential economics of a commercial expansion at the site are reviewed in this paper.IntroductionIn situ recovery o f bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands has puzzled the oil industry for many year s, but a breakthrough appears close at hand. Abstract - The Lupin mine, located in the central Slave province just east of the western boundary of Nunavut Territory, is a world-class example of a Neoarchean-aged banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted lode-gold deposit. At the minesite the gold-mineralized Lupin BIF, separating stratigraphically underlying psammitic wacke and overlying argillaceous turbidite sequences, delineates the Lupin dome, a hammerhead-shaped F2/F3 interference fold structure occurring at the greenschist to amphibolite facies metamorphic transition within the thermal aureole of the Contwoyto batholith. Detailed paragenetic relationships indicate that peak thermal metamorphism coincided with the switch from regional D2 compression to rapid D3 unroofing of the Neoarchean orogenic infrastructure. Gold initially precipitated with pyrrhotite, replacing amphibolitic BIF at the apex of the Lupin deformation zone, separating the east and west lobes of the Contwoyto batholith. Over the course of associated prograde/retrograde metasomatic overprints, gold was further remobilized during garnet and loellingite/arsenopyrite growth in chlorite-altered selvages of late-forming ladder quartz veins. A metamorphic model of ore genesis, with gold being scavenged and transported by metamorphic fluid that was shed and structurally trapped at the amphibolite recrystallization front, is favored over the previously proposed syngenetic and exogenic models of gold concentration that have tended to polarize genetic interpretations to date.

Compañía Minera Antamina is a polymetallic mining complex that produces copper and zinc concentrates as primary products and molybdenum and lead/bismuth/silver concentrates as by-products. In 2007, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) was contracted to increase SAG mill throughput by integrating and optimising blast fragmentation, crushing and grinding for the harder M4/M4A (CuZn) ores. Following the implementation of recommendations provided by Metso PTI, the SAG mill throughput increased from 2750tph to reach an average of 3600tph for the remainder of 2007. Due to continued application of mine to mill integration and optimisation philosophy, by 2010, the concentrator consistently exceeded the target of 4400tph while processing harder CuZn ores.

"IntroductionMUCH PROSPECTING, exploration, and development work was done for uranium in Canada in 1952, chiefly in northern Saskatchewan and in the Great Bear Lake region of the northwest Territories. The outstanding feature of the year was the great amount of work done in preparing for production at the Ace mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, in the Goldfields region . of Saskatchewan. Many private companies and prospectors were also active in this region. Most of the other parts of Canada where uranium has been found received less attention than during the last few years, partly because so much interest was taken in the Goldfields region.In presenting this short summary of the year's activities now, the writer is handicapped because the season is not yet over; some discoveries have probably not yet been announced, and there has not yet been time to digest the numerous reports that have been sent in by companies and prospectors. In any case it would be impossible to give details for most of the discoveries and properties, because that would require a long report, and because that information is classed as confidential until released by the discoverers and companies concerned. It is only possible, therefore, to give a few generalizations, a brief out-line of the activities in northern Saskatchewan, even briefer ,accounts of the work in other parts of the country, and a few details that property owners have informed the writer he may publish or that have already been published by the owners."

"Trends in world coal markets indicate that the next twenty years could be a period of intensive development for British Columbia's coal resource. This paper examines demand projections for metallurgical, thermal and chemical feedstock coals, with particular reference to domestic and Pacific Rim markets. Supply possibilities, from the point of view of British Columbia's competitive position, are explored, with emphasis on the interaction of such factors as capital, labour, port and transportation requirements.The paper concludes with an examination of British Columbia's strategies in light of the foregoing, and comments on the government's role in ensuring that development of the coal resource be attained in a manner consistent with over-all provincial goals and objectives.IntroductionFor the purposes of this paper the Pacific Rim is defined as including, in addition to Canada, the following: Japan, Korea, the People 's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the countries of the Indonesian Archipelago, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific-bordering countries of South America and Mexico. The United States has been excluded in this definition in order to better illustrate the economic growth potential for British Columbia coal in the Pacific Rim economies.In the past decade, the Pacific Rim economies have grown faster than most other economies in the rest of the world; economic growth rates of 10 per cent were common in the region prior to the 1974 slowdown and the average rate of economic expansion in the mid-1970s has exceeded 6 per cent. Rapid expansion of international trade in the region has been a major stimulus in this process. By 1979, Pacific Rim two-way trade has reached an estimated $550 billion-about 20 per cent of world trade."

THE Mackenzie River Valley proper extends from Great Slave lake to the Arctic ocean (see map, Figure 1). From Fort Providence, near Great Slave lake, to Aklavik, near the Arctic coast, the distance by river is 1,000 miles. This will give some idea of the extent of the region. Throughout the length of the river valley, the Precambrian complex rocks are overlain by unaltered sedimentary rocks several thousand feet in thickness. These sediments are dominantly marine and Palaeozoic in age. In places, the Palaeozoic strata are overlain unconformable by Cretaceous an Tertiary sediments. The strata have been folded and, in general, the inclination of the beds to the horizontal is comparatively gentle. Here, then, we have the essentials for potential oil fields covering an area over 1,000 miles in length. This is probably the largest comparatively unexplored potential petroleum region in North America, and surface evidences of oil in the form of seepages occur in several places. Many of these seeps were known to the early explorers, and the first Geological Survey report on the Mackenzie River region, containing the results of field work carried out by R. G. McConnell in 1887-88, noted the petroliferous character of the Devonian strata and the indications of petroleum(l). This region is, however, handicapped by distance from markets and sources of supply of materials; by lack of modern transport facilities; by short season for river transport, and mountainous country separating the valley from the Pacific seaboard; and by the long winter season with weather that makes outdoor work difficult. These factors have tended to discourage the enthusiasm of would-be promoters, and so development in this region has been slow In 1920, a test well drilled about fifty miles northwest of Fort Norman discovered oil in commercial quantity, and three additional wells proved a small area to be productive.

"Hydrometal is specialized in the production of zinc sulphate from complex secondary raw materials. Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust is one of the more interesting potential sources to produce zinc sulphate. In order to minimize waste quantities generated from EAF dust treatment, our R&D team has developed and patented a new process to recover the Fe contained in the dust as iron oxide product to be used and sold into the pigment market. The process is based on a specific reductive leaching step of the zinc ferrite contained in EAF dust, followed by a purification step to remove impurities (Ni, Cr, Cu...) and finally the controlled precipitation of the iron oxide. The aim of the iron precipitation step is to obtain the right shape and length of crystals in order to guarantee the right color and tinting strength of the pigment. The innovative aspects of the process results in the controlled oxidation of the iron to get the right crystal size and good purity material. The iron product can be valorized as red or yellow pigment often produced by the Penniman-Zoph process.INTRODUCTION A Few Words about HYDROMETAL Hydrometal SA (Engis, Belgium) is a subsidiary of Jean Goldschmidt International SA (JGI) in Brussels. JGI is mainly involved in metal trading activities (Goldschmidt, 1995). In 1985, JGI acquired the leaching circuit of a Belgian electrolytic zinc producer located in Engis, a few kilometers south of Liège, near the river Meuse and it was decided to name this plant: SA HYDROMETAL. Hydrometal is well connected by water, rail and road from its central location in the industrial region of Liege, in the heart of Europe. The company received in 1997 an additional license to process and recycle toxic and hazardous waste. Figure 1 shows a picture of the plant."

"Totten Mine return air raise was designed with two parallel fans equipped with silencers to reduce the noise emitted from the outlets into the environment. As development and production of the mine progressed through the past years, the silencer system needed to be upgraded, and additional maintenance strategies have been necessary to meet the regulatory noise limits enforced by the province of Ontario. The current mine plan will require the fans to reach the upper limit of their capacity by Q1 2019. To achieve this operational target, additional silencing capability has been required and Totten Mine has explored alternatives to further extend the noise silencing capacity available considering the current constraints at the mine site. The alternatives included a new silencer baffle design and a new layout that have allowed doubling the length of the silencer system. Using acoustic measurement data collected on several occasions, this paper presents and discusses the performance of the various silencing systems which have been installed on the return air fans at Totten Mine.INTRODUCTION Vale Canada Limited’s Totten Mine is a base metal, underground mine extracting nickel and copper, situated in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario. The mine initiated operations at the end of 2013, and is equipped with two main return air fans and two main fresh air fans located on surface. Both fresh air and return air fans are set in a parallel arrangement to operate as integrated units and are equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs) to allow for the remote modification of their operating set point, usually between 600 to 880 rpm, depending on the mine’s requirements. The main return air raise (RAR) fans are also equipped with dissipative baffle silencers to attenuate the noise emitted to the environment. Approximately four years ago, acoustical measurements conducted to verify compliance with the applicable regulatory criteria, and respond to noise concerns from neighboring residents, concluded that the sound emissions of the main return air raise exceeded the noise design parameters. The acoustic tones of the fans were audible offsite, at a residential location, approximately 9 km northeast of the mine site. The elevated sound levels and offsite audibility was due to degradation of the original discharge silencers from moisture and particulate being drawn from underground workings and passing through the silencer baffles. The audibility was also due to an outlet directivity pattern which directed noise towards the residential location."

"A new sensor based sorting system has been developed, providing a possibility for laboratory scale testing and further scale-up of the separation results to the industrial operation. The new system contains different sensors as: X-ray detectors, visible light cameras, NIR cameras, ultraviolet cameras and magnetic sensors, in the same sorting unit. The sorting unit allows advanced calibration options and fine-tuning of the installed sensors to achieve the best separation effect under controlled conditions. Finally, the processed material can be analysed and separated by the rejection mechanism, similarly to the industrial scale operation. At the same time, the process is carried out with limited amount of material allowing detailed statistical calculations for processed particles and all sensor types. The optimal settings and sensor types are specified for the industrial application.The paper describes the scale up of the results achieved for iron ore and coal, where the test work was first carried out using the new laboratory sorting system and where the industrial scale sorting system has been built, in the final stage. The industrial scale sorting results showed a very good correlation between the laboratory and full scale operation. Thanks to the detailed study carried out in the laboratory equipment, the settings of the sensors in the full scale operation provided much better separation efficiency. It was especially important to provide proper setting for the X-ray sensor data calculations, which can be very critical for achieving the best results. During the industrial scale sorting of coal, the input material had 40-55% rock particles as the direct source of ash in the coal stream. The optimal laboratory unit settings and transferring these settings to the industrial sorter, provided 98.8% efficiency for removing rock particles with only few % losses of coal."

"The better the information on the rock mass and its fracture system, the better is the basis for any rock mechanical decision that is required during the excavation process. While in conventional tunnelling free view to the tunnel face is available, possibilities are limited for mechanised tunnelling using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). An approach, already formulated in 2005, is used that produces digital photographs through openings in the cutting wheel of a TBM and merges them into a circular three-dimensional image. The 3D image is then used for geometric rock mass characterisation purposes including geological mapping, for example to measure spatial orientations or determine joint spacing. In the paper the basic concept is described together with first results from a pilot test.INTRODUCTIONA three-dimensional image unites digital photographs with spatial information on the objects/surfaces it shows. Since they combine geometric and visual information they are a straightforward source for geometric rock mass analysis and geological mapping. Their obvious benefits among others are: (i) they allow spatial measurements even in inaccessible regions, (ii) they provide objective and reproducible records of the rock mass conditions, and (iii) they increase working safety (Gaich et al. 2004).Pre-requisite for the generation of 3D images is the acquisition of at least two photographs from the region of interest. From the photographs the imaged object surfaces are reconstructed by means of image analysis using methods from photogrammetry (Slama, 1980) and computer vision (Hartley & Zisserman, 2001). This paper is an attempt to place Canadian Precambrian volcanogenic deposits in perspective, by examining and compiling data regarding certain neglected fundamentals of size, grade, value, frequency distribution and spatial density. The discovery roles played by various exploration methods are compared and contrasted, and. using empirical methods, the probabilities of discovery are discussed, combined with the use of an effective 'cost-per-target' program. From these basic observations, realistic exploration judgments may be made. Using similar methodology, this format may be applied to other types of deposits. Precambrian volcanogenic deposits occur in a natural geometric progression in size. They number 110, of which 70% are pre-producers, producers or past-producers. These deposits are bonanzas and generally have a 'net pre-smelter' value of between $43 and $62 per ton. The statistically typical deposit is that which occupies the modal position, has 400,000 tons of ore, a value of $20 million and occurs with a frequency of 40%. A median deposit has 1.4 million tons of ore, a value of $70 million and occurs with a frequency of 15%. An upper-decile deposit ha s 13.3 million tons of ore. a value of $750 million and occurs with a frequency of 6.5%. The major, mid-upper-decile deposits have a minimum of 50 million tons of ore, a value of $3 billion and occur with a frequency of 4%. Five major volcanogenic deposits occur in the Precambrian and account for 54% of production. This contrasts with 55 deposits (all below the median) which account for 3.9% of production.
