"Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. The composition of the solvent should also be controlled to allow dissolution of the depolymerizing coal and to prevent precipitation of this material during the subsequent processing of the coal digest and extract solution. "This paper reviews options for the separation of a mixture of rare earth elements (REE) into its component elements. Earlier separations used selective chemistry such as double salt precipitation and reductive/oxidative processes – methods that still have a place in the industry. Fractional crystallization was developed for more complete separations of adjacent REE. The latter method was replaced by ion exchange (IX), which was in turn replaced by solvent extraction (SX). Two main SX chemistries are in use, solvation and cation exchangers, with several variants (mixed solvents, ionic liquids, etc.) now under investigation. SX plant configurations have evolved including advanced techniques like “hyperlinking”, novel saponification methods, and alternative stripping techniques. The classic mixer-settler is the most commonly employed device although centrifugal contactors have been pilot-tested. Non-dispersive SX options including microfluidic devices and membrane-assisted SX techniques are being developed and could revolutionize the SX option. Other REE separation techniques now being studied include Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), Free Flow Electrophoresis (FFE), newer IX systems, and electrolytic processes. Additionally, the classical crystallization and selective precipitation methods and newer bacteria-mediated processes, chloride volatilization, high performance liquid chromatography, and magnetic separation systems have been studied. This paper reviews the options and concludes that conventional SX is the technology of choice but viable alternatives could be demonstrated and acceptable within a couple of years.INTRODUCTIONThe chemical properties of the individual REE are very similar which is why REE minerals and ore deposits almost invariably contain a mixture of all fifteen REE, i.e., La to Lu plus Y. That said, the distribution of REE in a given deposit is frequently dominated by the light REE (LREE, i.e., La to Nd). Examples include the Bayan Obo, Mianning, Lynas Mt. Weld, and Molycorp Mountain Pass deposits where heavy REE (HREE – Sm to Lu and Y) typically account for well under 5% of the REE content. The LREE operations produce some HREE but the main sources of these important elements are the ionic clay deposits of Southern China. Importantly, all of the REE recovery operations referenced above, except for cerianite-bearing ionic clay deposits, initially produce a mixed REE precipitate or calcine with a REE distribution similar to that in the ore (Goode, 2016). However, the consumers of the REE, the manufacturers of magnets, phosphors, catalysts, optical glass, etc., require separated products with purities generally ranging from 99% to as high as 99.9999% depending on the element in question and the end use. Hence there is a need to separate the individual REE one from the other. This paper is intended to review the options."

Zero Emission Gas power, ZEG, is a novel concept where a high temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is integrated with a reforming reactor producing hydrogen from natural gas through Sorption Enhanced Steam Methane Reforming (SESMR). The SOFC is used as a high temperature heat source for regeneration of the CO2-absorbent. Moreover, by using part of the produced hydrogen as fuel for the SOFC, the waste heat of the process is considerably reduced. Thus, the process has a very high thermal efficiency and produces both electricity and hydrogen from natural gas. In addition, a stream of pure CO2 is produced in the regeneration step and can be deposited or used commercially. Initial cost estimates indicate a cost of electricity and a cost of hydrogen well below today's prices. A small (1kWel + 1kW H2) demonstration set-up is under construction and experimental results and related research will be presented. This set-up comprises one 2.5kWth H2 SESMR-reactor (about 0.85 Nm3/h H2) operating batchwise with dolomite as the CO2-sorbent. The reactor developed is designed like a parallel plate heat exchanger where the mixture of sorbent and reforming catalyst is packed between the heat exchanging plates. The demonstration set-up includes a 1kW SOFC operating in a continuous mode. The set¬up will therefore demonstrate continuous simultaneous hydrogen- and electricity production, but cannot demonstrate simultanuous electricity- and CO2-production. The set?up is well equipped for on-line monitoring of gas composition, flows and temperatures. This important part of the demonstration set-up is developed and provided by Christian Michelsen Research (CMR). A minor part of the project is the development of a continuous circulating fluidized bed SESMR-reactor system and in another related project the focus is on the development of more suitable sorbents. In these two projects co-operation with University of British Columbia and Lousianna State University, respectively, is highly appreciated.

"Grinding tests were conducted on an oxidized copper-cobalt ore using a pear-shaped ball mill. Twelve mono-sized ore fractions were prepared and wet ground batchwise. The mill was run for 0.5 to 30 min intervals. The shortest interval provided data more closely related to the breakage function (B) because less secondary breakage was hypothesized. Some selection function (S) and B parameters were determined. Remaining parameters were estimated using a population balance model simulator. To evaluate the kinetics model, an unsized ore sample was also milled. Predicted and measured particle size distributions (PSDs) agreed well, suggesting that S and B parameters can be used for continuous operation mass balances.RÉSUMÉ Des essais de broyage ont été menés sur un minerai oxydé de cuivre-cobalt à l’aide d’un broyeur à boulets piriforme. Douze fractions de minerai de dimension unique ont été préparés et broyés en voie humide en lots. Le broyeur était mis en route à des intervalles de 0,5 à 30 minutes. L’intervalle le plus court fournissait des données plus étroitement liées à la fonction d’abattage (B) car d’après l’hypothèse avancée, le besoin d’abattage secondaire était moindre. Certains paramètres de la fonction de sélection (S) et de B ont été déterminés ; les paramètres restants ont été estimés à l’aide d’un simulateur de modèle d’équilibre de population. Pour évaluer le modèle de cinétique, un échantillon de minerai non calibré a également été broyé. Les compositions granulométriques (PSD, de l’anglais particle size distributions) prévues et mesurées correspondaient bien, ce qui laisse penser que l’on peut se servir des paramètres S et B dans le cadre d’équilibrages massiques en fonctionnement continu. INTRODUCTIONSize reduction of solids is a very energy intensive and highly inefficient process. It consumes approximately 5% of the electricity produced worldwide (Rhodes, 1998), and more than 50% of the total energy used in mineral processing plants (Walkiewicz, Lindroth, & Clark, 1996). An increase in grinding efficiency can therefore result in significant reductions in operating costs. This often amounts to determining the optimal design configurations for milling an ore sample in a laboratory mill under standard conditions. Prior to optimizing the milling stage, the requirements for downstream processing in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) need to be understood because low liberation and overgrinding will lead to future problems. Once this is done, it is also important to clearly understand the breakage properties of the ore. The kinetics of size reduction in tumbling mills are often determined using two probabilistic functions: selection and breakage (Austin & Luckie, 1972). Knowledge of the selection and breakage functions also enables the prediction of the PSD for a given ore sample."

This work illustrates the potential of two welding processes for joining AA1100-16 vol.% B4C metal matrix composite: laser welding process using a 4 kW Nd:YAG laser and Friction Stir Welding. A comparison is made between these two welding techniques in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints. A large amount of brittle needle-like phases, together with some residues of B4C particles were observed in the fusion zone of laser welded joints. The use of Ti filler can improve the microstructure and increase the joint efficiency from 63% to 75%. On the other hand, the friction stir welding process being a solid state welding technique is interesting as it avoids the formation of brittle intermetallic phases. In addition, the breakage of B4C particles and the grain refinement of the matrix were observed in the weld zone. Consequently, FSW joints show much better mechanical properties than laser welded joints. Up to 100% joint efficiency can be achieved by FSW for annealed AA1100-16 vol.% B4C materials.

"The mid-Cretaceous Seagull batholith intruded Mississippian sedimentary and volcanic rocks and Jurassic(?) granitic and ultramafic rocks within the Omineca Crystalline Belt in the Yuk on Territory near the British Columbia boundary. Leucoerotic fluorine- and boron-rich granites of the batholith exhibit many textural variations from aplite to pegmatite, but are dominated by a coarse-grained seriate unit and a fine-grained porphyritic unit.Four distinctive tin vein occurrences within and near the batholith are described, the most interesting of which is the MC showing of quartz-calcite-chlorite-cassiterite veins in intensely fractured zones of sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Three other showings occur within the batholith:J) the EC showing of quartz-fluorite-cassiterite-sulphide veins with prominent muscovite-illite alteration;2) the DU showing of quartz-hematite-fluorite-sulphide- sulphide-cassiterite with considerable manganese staining and sericitic alteration; and3) the VAL showing of quartz-tourmaline-cassiterite-fluorite-arsenopyrite veins with little associated alteration.Most cassiterite occurrences are within easterly-trending, vertical structures and all occurrences are thought to represent parts of a single system. These mineralogical and physical variations are apparently related to the distance from the upper contact of the batholith.For the Seagull batholith, Rb-Sr isotopic data give a 100±1.4 Ma isochron age that is concordant with the K-Ar model age from biotite of 101±4 Ma. Initial Sr isotopic ratios for the batholith are high at 0.712, indicating an old, sialic crustal source for this pluton. This initial ratio is similar to values for granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits in the Yukon Territory. The high initial ratio for Sr, the high Si02 content, the high s/I index, the presence of normative corundum. leucogranitic composition and associated lithophile-tungsten mineralization demonstrate that the Seagull batholith is probably an S-type granitic body. This factor is significant to regional exploration jar tin and tungsten in the Canadian Cordillera."

"Large subhorizontal joints have been found in the foundation excavations in basalt and granite of Brazilian Dams. Some spread for hundreds of square meters showed slickensides—polished surfaces plus striations—and laminations interpreted as related to shear displacement, what substantially reduced their shear strength and imposed special reinforcement measures against the potential sliding of overlying concrete structures. The geological characteristics of these discontinuities have raised speculations related to their origin, be it related to mechanisms of bulging, cambering or to some tectonic or primary geological event.Several geologists and engineers from the northern hemisphere including Terzaghi already showed to be concerned with their role in granite foundations while in the southern regions Brazilian authors have found similar occurrences but also affecting individual lava flows of continental flood basalts in the foundations of major dams of the Parana Basin, which they designated under the particular name of “fault-joints”. This double-standard designation is self-explanatory of the difficulties involving their origin and related geomechanical properties: faults or just shear joints?Recently, similar features were encountered in the foundations of large dam constructions in anorogenic granites inserted in the realm of the Brazilian Amazon, where some of these discontinuities exhibit features common to tectonic thrusting combined with deep tropical weathering.The evidence of preshearing along the surfaces of such fractures, also associated to products of deep weathering, reduces their geomechanical strength substantially, suggesting values of ultimate phi spanning 12 to 28°. The detection of these descontinuities during initial investigation phases continues to be a major complex task in geological risk evaluations surveys. Trenching associated to some geophysical exploration techniques, although considered to be very basic exploration techniques are still the suggested methods for their forecast and previous determination."

"Atlas Copco is introducing a new patented method for full-face boring. This paper presents the basic principles of the boring action and discusses the present experience regarding performance and costs. The Atlas Copco ""Full-facers"" are designed for hard-rock applications, although they are successfully boring in soft ground without major changes. The unique patented boring principle referred to as the 'Undercutting Method' permits these machines to bore, economically, in harder ground than machines based on the 'crushing principle'. This is mainly due to considerably lower cutting-tool costs, as the tungsten carbide tips only are in contact with one-third of the bored volume. The remaining rock is 'undercut' and peels off from a slight back pressure.The undercutting method also permits boring of non-circular headings and Atlas Copco has already manufactured two machines for rectangular drifts. This concept could revolutionize development work in mines employing trackless equipment."

The São Bento concentrator was built by Gencor in 1985 to treat refractory gold-bearing flotation concentrate. The plant was the first commercial application of pressure oxidation for refractory gold ore following about a year after the first use of pressure oxidation on a whole ore at Homestake's McLaughlin operation in California. Ore from the Sao Bento mine is remarkably consistent in gold grade and arsenic and sulphide concentration as is typical in banded iron formations (BIF) (l). Gold content is approximately 9 g/t with approximately 30 - 40% free milling. The balance is associated with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite. An expansion of both process facility and mine was undertaken between 1996 and 1998, raising the treatment capacity from 32,000 t/mo to 45,000 t/mo.

"Poor separation of lead from a copper concentrate of a major base metal producer was thought to have resulted from copper (0.2-0.4%) in the galena which caused it to float with chalcopyrite. No inclusions of copper mineral were detected which could account for the flotation of galena. The tendency for copper-bearing galena to float with chalcopyrite was confirmed by Hallimond-tube experiments in which the floatability of copper-doped synthetic galena (0.1-0.4% Cu) was approximately four times as high as copper-free galena. The difference in the cell edge (5.9338 ± 0.0003 A, Cudoped galena; 5.9361 ± 0.0002 A, Cu-free galena) indicated that the copper was lattice-bound and did not occur as submicroscopic mineral inclusions."

"Spiral concentrators are used to upgrade ore based on the density difference between their component minerals. This simple flowing film gravity separator is of interest for the processing of large amounts of material, as found in the iron ore industry. Addition of wash water at different points on the trough of the spiral affects the grade and recovery of the valuable concentrate by affecting the flow of particles within the thin slurry film. This paper shows how radiolabelled hematite (-355+300 µm) and quartz (–1,180+1,000 µm) tracers were used to determine the particles’ behaviour within the slurry film with and without the addition of wash water. The results presented provide a detailed particle flow pattern around a wash water addition point and its effect on the trajectory and velocity of the particles. This information is of interest in building knowledge about spiral wash water injection parameters such as injection location, direction, flow rate and nozzle orifice type (affecting jet shape and velocity).INTRODUCTIONSpiral concentrators are density based separation devices. They are extensively used in the upgrading of iron ore, fine coal and minerals sands (sources of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite) (Wills & Finch, 2016). A spiral unit is composed of a channel of specific profile formed as a helix of 3 to 7 turns around a central structural post. The feed pulp is composed of 15 to 45% solids with particle size from 75 µm to 3000 µm (Wills & Finch, 2016). Throughput of a single spiraling trough can be up to 8 ton per hour and multiple trough unit (up to four trough) can process up to 30 ton per hour for a footprint of around 0.7 m2 (Palmers & Vadeikis, 2010). They are low cost concentrators considering manufacturing of their trough via polymer reverse molding. The energy intensity of a spiral plan is notably small considering the throughput and is mostly related to pulp pumping and final concentrate dewatering."

The claims now held by Mount Wright Iron Mines Co. Limited were acquired by staking in 1956, 1957 and 1958, i.e., some time after the major deposits of the Quebec Cartier Mining and Normanvi!le Mining Co. (formerly Quebec Cobalt & Exploration Ltd.) were already discovered and partly outlined. The choice of the location of the Mount Wright hold-ings was governed simply by the -availability of ground still open to staking and by its proximity to properties held by major iron companies. Mount Wright Iron Mines had no previous knowledge of the geology and no aeromagnetic results were available to it to guide the choice of areas to be staked. In order to explore the newly ac-quired claims it was decided to make a grid of widely spaced magnetic profiles on the ground rather than use aeromagnetics. This afforded the possibility of making some geological observations simultaneously with the geophysical measurements.

Microseismic monitoring systems listen to a rockmass and record ground vibrations associated with brittle rock fracture. Modern systems record continuously and can identify as many as one thousand small and possibly larger magnitude events occurring each day from induced stress change and redistribution. This paper presents examples of the real time use of microseismic information in mining applications. It shows how alerts can quickly identify large magnitude events or unexpected clusters of seismicity and how seismic re-entry protocol can help to improve safety decisions. Additionally, newly developed advanced analysis techniques applied to mine seismic data sets are shown including the use of clustering methods to see into a cloud of seismic data to identify significant activity and quantify possible planar features. The use of source parameter trend analysis is shown to be a beneficial method for interpreting changes in relative stress levels. Seismic moment magnitude distributions are analyzed using the TGR (Truncated Gutenberg Richter) and TMD (Tapered Moment Distribution) methods to estimate bvalue and expected maximum magnitude. Seismic hazard analysis is shown as a useful way to simplify a dataset and highlight seismic hot spots. The rockmass response to excavation is a complicated spatial and temporal process and microseismic monitoring is a method that can be used to help understand the location and mechanics of failure occurring in the rock ultimately helping to improve safety and productivity at a mine site.

"Oil sands tailings impoundments rank among the largest (spatially) in the world, covering a total of approximately 220 km2 of northern Alberta, Canada. A preliminary geomorphic design for an oil sands tailings storage facility (TSF) landform was completed with the goal of eventual closure and delicensing in mind. This paper outlines methods identified during the design process that streamline closure when implemented early in the mine planning and TSF design stages. With most oil sands TSFs currently in active operation (and some still in the planning stages), geotechnical engineers and mine planners have the opportunity to make operational and design decisions, such as those outlined herein, that are likely to improve the geotechnical and environmental performance of the landform post closure. ¦ KEYWORDS Alberta, Athabasca oil sands (AOS), Landform design, Reclamation, Sand dam, Tailings storage facility (TSF) RÉSUMÉ Les bassins d’accumulation des résidus issus des sables bitumineux font partie des plus grands (en termes d’espace) au monde, et couvrent au total environ 220 km2 dans le nord de l’Alberta, au Canada. Une conception géomorphologique préliminaire a été réalisée pour le modelé d’une installa¬tion de stockage des résidus (ISR) issus des sables bitumineux en gardant à l’esprit la fermeture et le retrait de permis à terme. Cet article présente les méthodes identifiées pendant le processus de conception qui simplifient la fermeture lorsqu’elles sont mises en oeuvre dès les premières étapes de planification de la mine et de conception de l’ISR. Oil sands located within 100 m of the original surface account for 4,800 km2 of the total area and are considered to be economically mineable (Figure 1; ERCB, 2009). Bitumen, the thick, tar-like substance contained in the AOS, is extracted through open-pit mining and in-situ methods. During mining, the overburden is first removed as waste and the sandy, bitumi¬nous ore (“oil sand”) is transported to processing facilities via conveyor belts and 400 t trucks. Warm and hot water, as well as process aides such as caustic soda, are mixed with the oil sand, creating a slurry from which bitumen is mobilized and extracted. The resulting slurry waste product is called “tailings” and contains mineral solids, process water, and small proportions of unrecovered bitumen (Masliyah, Zhou, Xu, Czarnecki, & Hamza, 2004; Sobkowicz & Morgenstern, 2009)."

Keeping the sediment on the mine site and out of the water course is essential from the regulatory, environmental and sustainability perspectives. Regulation of this aspect of mining is embedded in environmental legislation and government receiving water quality standards, and government control has apparently been considered to be the most appropriate method to define mine site discharge standards and the environmental implications of sediment in downstream watercourses. A literature search for guidelines for the site specific design and operation of sediment ponds treating mine site runoff to remove total suspended solids, turbidity and flocculant-induced toxicity, revealed little information on the mining industry?s and government?s roles in defining the ?how to achieve? related to sediment pond design. Is there a need or reason for an industry-driven leadership to clearly define the ?how to? keep the sediment on the mine site and out of the water course? Currently, this issue is addressed in Canada by a federal mining regulation for metal mines which specifies discharge quality for sediment. This paper focuses on the method used in British Columbia, Canada, to regulate and provide a scientific methodology to control the discharge of sediment from mine sites. Management plans relative to this topic are discussed and are considered to have value from the exploration, construction, operation and the onset of closure phases. In addition, the balance and linkage between the erosion control management plan and the sediment pond management plan are discussed in terms of how they may be designed to complement each other to lower the risk of exceeding discharge and receiving water quality standards. If there were an industry-driven standard, or guidance document relative to addressing sediment release, it would benefit mining companies by eliminating the repetitive analysis of this topic for each new mine, mine expansion, and mine modification; also, government may often replace certain aspects of permitting with a regulation, if there is a government/industry established standard defining Best Achievable Technology (e.g. the Canadian Metal Mining Effluent Regulations).

"Inco's Matte Separation Plant is a unique mineral processing facility having no process tailings stream. Each product is a high-grade concentrate with strict assay specifications which are defined by the downstream refining route. The most recent column application in the flowsheet, copper scavenging in the production of a high quality nickel concentrate, is described in detail. Testwork in pilot-scale columns (0.038 m, 0.051 m and 0.10 m in diameter) was used to develop a model of the copper scavenging system. This data was then used to simulate the performance of plant-scale equipment. The relationships thus established were confirmed by a series of plant tests in a 1.8 m diameter column. Column results consistently exceeded conventional cell performance. The modelling was extended to assess full plant production requirements and, as a result, a 2.1 m diameter column was specified for this application. Engineering design for this column is currently underway and the column is scheduled to be commissioned later in 1991.INTRODUCTIONMatte SeparationINCO's Matte Separation Plant is a part of the Copper Cliff Smelter complex near Sudbury Ontario. The flowsheet and the development of column flotation within it have been described previously (Feeley et al., 1987, Wilson et al., 1989). The plant feed is a synthetic Bessemer Matte from the Nickel smelter. This matte is slow cooled to promote grain growth and typically assays 46-52% Ni, 23-27% Cu. These elements are present primarily in sulphide form (Ni3S2 and Cu2S respectively) with some metallic alloy also precipitating from the sulphur deficient matte. Minor amounts of iron, precious metals, and nuisance elements are also present.The matte separation process is, in concept, relatively simple. Following magnetic removal of the metallic alloy from the feed, the flowsheet is designed to float a high grade copper concentrate from the nickel sulphide matrix. A simplified flowsheet of the process is shown in figure 1."

"The Red-Chris porphyry Cu-Au deposit is located between Ealue and Kluea lakes, southeast of the village of Iskut on the Stewart Cassiar highway in northwestern British Columbia. It was explored by Texasgulf Inc., in a joint venture with Great Plains Development Company of Canada, Ltd. and Silver Standard Mines Ltd., during the period 1973 to 1980. Exploration resumed in 1994, following acquisition of the interests originally held by Texasgulf and Great Plains Development by American Bullion Minerals Ltd.Prospectors were first drawn to the area by prominent limonitic stain zones exposed in creek gullies in the western part of the property. These zones are developed on the alteration halo at the western periphery of the deposit. The potential ore zones do not crop out and were first exposed in a bulldozer trench excavated in 1971. Subsequent exploration was by percussion and diamond drilling, guided to some extent by induced polarization surveys. In 1976, estimated resources contained within two crudely designed open pits were 41 million tonnes with an average grade of 0.56% Cu and 0.34 g/t Au, with a cutoff grade of0.25% Cu. New resource estimates based on a major drilling program completed by American Bullion in 1994 were released as this paper goes to press. These estimates were calculated using various copper cutoff grades; at the 0.4% Cu cutoff, the ""in-situ geological reserve"" is given as 100 million tonnes grading 0.58% Cu and 0.46 g! t Au (American Bullion Minerals Ltd., 1995).The deposit consists mainly of pyrite, chalcopyrite and increasing bornite at depth, in zones of quartz-vein stockwork hosted by an elongate body of altered monzonite porphyry of latest Triassic or earliest Jurassic age. The stock intruded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of probable Stuhini Group affinity and is in faulted contact with sedimentary rocks of the Jurassic Bowser Lake Group. Gypsum stockworks are developed in the higher levels of the subvolcanic porphyry system. Late-stage quartz-carbonate veins carry small amounts of galena and sphalerite. Complex faulting within the deposit makes drill-hole correlations difficult. Alteration assemblages include an early potassic phase, almost completely destroyed by later phyllic alteration, and surrounded by a propylitic assemblage dominated by ankeritic carbonates in altered sedimentary rocks.The deposit has characteristics of bath the alkalic and calc-alkalic classes of porphyry copper deposits. The development of quartzvein stockwork suggests a calc-alkalic affinity, but the hostrocks contain little or no free quartz, molybdenum is present in trace amounts only and gold values are significant. Copper grades vary between wide extremes with unusually high grades in some sections of the deposit. The weight of evidence available in the 1970s led us to place the Red-Chris deposit firmly in the alkalic family. The quartz-sericite alteration assemblage was attributed to breakdown of potassium feldspar in a near-surface alteration environment in which seawater may have had a significant role. These interpretalions are retained here, but preliminary conclusions from the most recent work suggest that they may require some modification."
