"Stillwater Mining Company (SMC), a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville Corporation, produces a copper-nickel, platinum-palladium flotation concentrate at its Nye, Montana mine. The concentrate is then toll processed in Europe. Recognizing the economic advantage of treating the concentrates at the mine site and of retaining this strategic resource in the United States, the Company commissioned Tolltreck International Limited and International Process Research Corporation to conduct pilot scale smelting tests with a flowsheet that would maximize metal recoveries while satisfying the environmental requirements of operations at Stillwater.Primary smelting was conducted in a single phase, 50 k W, submerged-arc, electric furnace. Refining the product mattes to copper-nickel ""white-metal""; containing approximately 2% iron, was accomplished in a Tolltreck, IV-litre, top blown rotary converter. Over-all platinum and palladium recoveries were approximately 99%; copper and nickel recoveries averaged 94%. INTRODUCTION(l-4)Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville, operates a copper-nickel, platinum palladium mine and concentrator at Nye, Montana, located in the valley of the Stillwater River, approximately, 100 km southwest of Billings. It is North America's only primary producer of these precious metals. The Stillwater area was mined for chrome ore during World War U and the Korean War, but it was not until 1961 that attention was drawn to the similarities between the Stillwater Complex and the Bushveld Complex of South Africa with its deposits of platinum group metals.A concentrated search for platinum was begun by Manville Corporation in 1967. Its presence, together with palladium, in mineable quantities was confirmed in the period 1976-1978, and the first partnership to develop the deposits was formed by Manville and Chevron in 1979. Anaconda joined the group in 1983, and in 1985 its share was purchased by Lac Minerals. In 1988 the interests of Lac Minerals were purchased by Chevron and Manville.The decision to develop the mine and build a concentrator was made in 1986. Construction began in the fall of that year, and the first concentrate was produced six months later, in March 1987. Underground mining is done in a two-shift, five day- week operation. Since startup, the concentrator has operated on a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week schedule, treating an average of 635 tonnes of ore per day and producing approximately 10 tonnes of concentrate."

"A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the new Al-Ca-Mn-Fe phase diagram in the region of the aluminium corner is carried out using both thermodynamic calculations and experimental methods. Using the obtained data, the principal possibility of creating both cast and wrought sparingly alloyed aluminium alloys with calcium, manganese, scandium and zirconium at allowable iron contents of up to 0.4% that do not require solution treatment and quenching is justified. At the selected concentrations, the entire amount of manganese (1%) is practically included in the aluminium matrix, while calcium (~2%) and iron are in the multiphase eutectic, which has a fine structure. The joint introduction of 0.25% Zr and 0.1% Sc into the alloy leads to precipitation hardening due to the formation of the L12-Al3(Zr,Sc) phase during annealing. Based on the experimental data for the model multicomponent Al2CaMnFeZrSc alloy, it is shown that such alloys can combine high mechanical properties and good manufacturability during both casting and metal forming. This is due to the combination of a narrow temperature range of solidification with a fine eutectic structure.INTRODUCTION Hardening in branded aluminium alloys (both cast and wrought) is generally achieved by heat treatment of the T6 type, including quenching and artificial aging (Zolotorevskiy, 2007; Kaufman, 2004; Mondolfo, 1976). Heat treatment significantly increases the cost of the final products. Therefore, industrial companies are interested in developing alloys that can be hardened to the desired level without quenching. To solve this problem, alloys with scandium are the most suitable (Toropova, 1998; RØyset, 2005). This element (usually in an amount of ~0.3%) is one of the most effective hardeners in aluminium alloys, due to the formation of Al3Sc (L12) phase secondary precipitates, the size of which is less than 10 nm (Knipling, 2010; Fuller, 2005). These nanoparticles are formed during the annealing via decomposition of the supersaturated aluminium solid solution (hereinafter referred to as (Al)). This feature allows us to significantly increase the strength of aluminium alloys by simple annealing (at ~300°C), i.e., without heat treatment, including quenching. However, scandium is a very expensive metal, so its use as an additive is severely limited. The most effective method is the introduction of scandium together with zirconium (Lefebvre, 2009; Booth-Morrison, 2012). The optimal combination is the introduction of ~0.1% Sc together with 0.20–0.25% Zr, which, according to (Belov, 2006), gives approximately the same strengthening effect as the introduction of 0.3% Sc."

"In an environment of rising energy prices and mining at greater depths, cost-efficient loading and hauling equipment is essential. Conducted at an underground mining operation, this study analyzes the energy consumption and gas emissions of diesel and electric load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) with similar bucket capacities. Based on energy prices from the first quarter of 2014, results of discrete event simulation show that energy costs for diesel and electric LHDs are US$0.24/t and US$0.07/t, respectively. Also, diesel LHDs emit 2.68 kg CO2 per litre of diesel fuel, whereas using electric machines reduces the need for ventilation to mitigate engine heat and emissions and reduces energy costs.RÉSUMÉ Dans un contexte de croissance des prix de l’énergie et d’exploitation minière à des profondeurs de plus en plus grandes, il est essentiel d’avoir des équipements de chargement et de transport les plus rentables possible. La présente étude, effectuée dans une mine souterraine, analyse la consommation énergétique et les émissions de gaz de chargeuses-navettes (LHD) au diésel et à l’électricité ayant des capacités de godet similaires. En se basant sur les prix courants de l’énergie, les résultats d’une simulation d’événements discrets montrent que les coûts énergétiques pour les LHD au diésel et à l’électricité sont respectivement de 0,24 $US/t et de 0,07 $US/t. De plus, les LHD au diésel émettent 2,68 kg CO2 par litre de combustible diésel alors que les machines utilisant l’électricité réduisent le besoin de ventilation pour atténuer la chaleur des moteurs et les émissions en plus de réduire les coûts énergétiques."

Auriferous, bedding-parallel veins occur in zones of carbonaceous, argillaceous and sulfidic turbidites in the Lower to Middle Cambrian sandy flysch of the Goldenville Formation. The 0348 values for vein and wall-rock arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, and for regional pyrite and pyrrhotite, are highly positive. The values are similar to those from Cambro-Ordovician sediment-hosted deposits of other types, and display trends that increase upward in the stratigraphic sequence. The similarity in composition of vein and wallrock sulfides indicates a seawater-sulfate sourCe for sulfur, derived from the enclosing rocks at the time of vein formation. The upward increase in ?34S values is consistent with closed system sulfate reduction in the anoxic portion of a stratified water-colurnn. Published ? 13C and ? 18() values for Meguma Group vein carbonates are unlike those of other gold-vein carbonates, but are similar to those of diagenetic-metamorphic carbonates from the Meguma Group and elsewhere. These data indicate that the source for the vein-related sulfides and carbonates may be the host strata; possibly the arsenic and gold were derived from the same source.

This is the second review of developments in coal mining engineering (see C.I.M .M. Transactions, Vol. LI, 1948, pp. 262- 264) and covers the period from October, 1948, to January, 1950. Mechanization The period under review was characterized by the intensive development of appliances providing for complete mechanization of coal-face operations. A variety of machines are being evolved or have already been placed on the market which embody the principle of 'continuous mining'. This trend can be observed in all coal producing countries. In the United States, two continuous mining machines have been developed for entry and room application and by the end of 1 949 were being used in a number of mines. These are the Joy Continuous Miner in which the coal is ripped from the face by means of multiple cutter chains, and the Jeffrey Colmol employing cutters on rotating arms for chipping the coal from the face. The Joy machine is made in tw6l models, 34-in. and 48-in. high and designed for a range of seam thicknesses from 3-ft. -t-in. to 4-ft. 6-in. and from 4-ft. 6-in. to 8ft., respectively. Some experience has been gained with this machine and accounts of its performance are already appearing in the technical literature. The Jeffrey-Colmol has a more limited range of working height. The first model, 38-in. high, was designed for seams about 4 feet in thick11ess but more recently the 28-in. low model has been placed on the market for seams 2-ft. 6-in, to 3-ft. 4-in. in thickness. Conventional mobile loading machines of the gathering-arm type are continuing to yield high production under suitable conditions, and improvements or modifications of the basic principle are embodied in new machines as, for example, the Jeffrey mobile (conveyor) loader with extensible (gathering-arm) head developed for conveyor mining.

"Run-of-mine ore is reduced to 4 per cent on 4 mesh (3/ 16 inch), using four stages of dry crushing. The mill feed is then reduced to 2 per cent on 48 mesh and 60 per cent through 200 mesh, using one stage of ball milling in cyanide solution. During the subsequent treatment about one-tenth of the tonnage is removed as a table concentrate and ground to 77 per cent through 325 mesh. The size of the mill tailing is 66 per cent through 200 mesh.Four stages of ore reduction began when the dry crushing plant at No. 26 Shaft came into operation at a maximum rate of 440 tons an hour on July 31, 1941. A detailed description of the crushing plant was published in C .I .M. Trans., Vol. LVI, 1953.One-stage ball milling in cyanide solution came into full operation on January 11, 1938. The ball milling plant had a capacity of 4800 tons daily when reducing mill feed at 2. 7 per cent on 1/ 4 inch to 54. 3 per cent through 200 mesh. Primary grinding to 60 per cent through 200 mesh commenced May 22, 1945, when the feed was 3 per cent on 4 mesh. Under these conditions the capacity of the ball milling plant is estimated at 4300 tons daily. A description of the 11 Hollinger Crushing and Grinding Plant"" by D. C. McLaren was published in the Canadian Mining Journal, June 1944.The concentrate grinding circuit using a 7 x 15 low discharge ball mill and a 19-foot diameter bowl classifier with a 6-inch centrifugal pump to close the circuit began operating in the ball milling plant on October 24, 1939."

"An adequate level of R & 0 is crucial to achieve gains in productivity and to strengthen Canada' s position in an increasingly competitive world ." So stated Finance Minister Jean Chretien in his April 10, 1978 budget speech, on announcing a new measure designed to increase the productivity of Canadian industry and to assist in the creation of new technology. The effect of the new measure, which permits an income tax deduction of 150% of certain research and development (R & D ) expenditures , can reduce the after-tax cost of a marginal dollar 's worth of such expenditures to as little as 20 cents . This article discusses the income tax treatment of R& D expenditures in general, and describes in particular the income tax incentives which relate to R& D.

"La Mine Doyon is a gold mining operation located in northwestern Quebec, approximately 35 km east of Rouyn-Noranda and 85 km west of Val d'Or. The mine is jointly owned by Lac Minerals Ltd. and Cambior Inc. with Lac Minerals as the manager. Production statistics as of February 1987 are 6.4 million tonnes milled at an average grade of5.8 g/t Au. Current reserves of9.9 million tonnes at 5. 7 g/ t Au to a depth of400m have been outlined. Indicated reserves below this horizon could considerably increase this reserve.The mine currently consists of two open pit and two underground mine operations, producing approximately 3600 tonnes per day of ore at an average grade of6 g/t. The ore is currently processed at the La Mine Doyon mill at a rate of1400tid and at Lac's East Malartic mill at 1950 t/d. Ore is also processed intermittently at Lac's Les Terrains Auriferes mill and at Noranda's Horne Division.La Mine Doyon is currently in the midst of a program to expand and upgrade the mill at La Mine Doyon. The expansion to 3000 t/day includes the conversion of the existing crushing and grinding circuits to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill circuit and the existing filter wash plant to a CIP (carbon-in-pulp) recovery plant. The economics of this project are based on reduced operating costs (milling and trucking) and improved recovery due to updated technology. HistoryThe area between Noranda and Val d'Or has a long history of mining activity in both base metals and gold, dating back to the early 1930s. More recently, several new orebodies have been discovered and exploited in the area including La Mine Doyon, Lac's Mine de Bousquet, Dumagami, and the Kiena operation.La Mine Doyon was discovered in the early 1970s, and brought into limited production in late 1979. The mine was started on are reserves of 2.75 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t and was, thus, considered a small, short-term operation. Mining started at an initial rate of 550 tI d with all the ore being shipped to Noranda's Horne smelter as flux. When Lac's East Malartic mill became available for custom milling, Doyon commenced shipping to that facility at a rate of 650 t/d. As a result of some equipment additions and an improved understanding of the ore, the East Malartic mill throughput was gradually increased from 650 t/d to the current rate of 1950 t/d."

"Economic Mn-oxide ore deposits of commercial grade occur in the Rhodope massif near Kato Nevrokopi in the Drama region, Northern Greece. The Mn-oxide mineralization has developed by weathering of continental hypogene rhodochrosite-sulphide veins. The vein mineralization is con-?ned by tectonic shear zones between marble and metapelites, extending laterally into the marble astabular, pod or lenticular oreshoots (up to 50 m x 20 m x 5-10 m). Supergene oxidation of the hypogene mineralization led to the formation of in-situ residual Mn-oxide ore deposits, and secondary infills of Mn-oxide ore in embryonic and well developed karst cavities.Whole rock geochemical pro?les across mineralized zones con?rm the role of thrusts and faults as solution passageways and stress the importance of these structures in the development of hydrothermal and supergene mineralization at Kato Nevrokopi. Three zones are recognized in the in-situ supergene veins: (A) a stable zone of oxidation, where immobile elements form (or substitute in) stable oxide mineral phases, and mobile elements are leached; (B) a transitional (active) zone in which element behavior is strongly in?uenced by seasonal ?uctuations of the groundwater table and variations in pH-Eh conditions; and (C) a zone of permanent ?ooding, where variations in pH-Eh conditions are minimal. Zone (B) is considered as the source zone for the karst cavity mineralization. During weathering, meteoric waters, which were CO2-rich (PCO2~10-3.8 to 10-1.4) and oxygenated (fO2~10-17 for malachite), percolated downward within the veins, causing breakdown and dissolution of sul?des and marble, and oxidation of rhodochrosite to Mn-oxides. Karst cavity formation was favored by the high permeability along thrust zones. Dissolved Mn2+was transportedinto karst cavities in reduced meteoric waters at the beginning of weathering (pH~4-5), and as Mn(HCO3)2in slightly alkaline groundwaters during advanced weathering (pH~6-8). Mn4+-oxide precipitation took place by fO2increase in ground waters, or pH increase by continuous hydrolysis and carbonate dissolution. In the well developed karst setting, some mobility of elements occurred during and after karst ore formation in the order Na>K>Mg>Sr>Mn>As>Zn>Ba>Al>Fe>Cu>Cd>Pb."

The vein mineralization is confined by tectonic shear zones between marble and metapelites, extending laterally into the marble as tabular, pod or lenticular oreshoots (up to 50 m ?? 20 m ?? 5-10 m). Supergene oxidation of the hypogene mineralization led to the formation of in-situ residual Mn-oxide ore deposits, and secondary infills of Mn-oxide ore in embryonic and well developed karst cavities.Whole rock geochemical profiles across mineralized zones confirm the role of thrusts and faults as solution passageways and stress the importance of these structures in the development of hydrothermal and supergene mineralization at Kato Nevrokopi. "Methane emission and the desorption characteristics of vertical borehole coal samples of Greenhills multiple seams in the vicinity of Elkford, British Columbia were investigated. Three vertical boreholes at depths of 335 m, 380 m and 395 m were drilled along the west wall of an active open pit mine and 44 core samples from various coal seams were obtained for desorption studies.The results are presented in three tables and illustrated with six figures. The methane content was found to increase significantly at depths greater than 200 m. The adsorption equation by Kim and the properties of the coal have been used to predict the methane content and these were compared with the measured values by the direct method.IntroductionThe coalification of plant material in the sedimentary rock produces different ranks of co al and gases of various composition. The gas mixtures are retained in coal beds and rock strata under pressure. The gas content in a coal bed varies considerably depending on the rank of coal and the depth of overburden. The gas content is defined as the volume of gases adsorbed in a unit weight of coal materials. The net amount of gases remaining in a coal seam depends on the difference in the rate of generation of methane by geo-thermal heat and the rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal bed through sedimentary cover. The major factor that causes the change in rank and the liberation of gases is the temperature, which is governed by the thermal conductivity of sedimentary cover and the heat flux through the underlying rocks. The rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal is governed by the porosity of the overlying rocks and the degree of fracture. The measured values of gas content in major North American coal beds are from zero up to 24 cm3 per gram of coal(1,2). A gas content of 2.5 to 9 cm3/g is considered ""gassy"" and that of 9 cm3/g or higher is considered ""very gassy"" for underground mining(3). Normally, the gas mixtures released from bituminous coal in Canada contain 90 to 98% methane and the remainder is made up of CO2, N2, 02, H2, He and other hydrocarbons(4)."

"THE Mattagami district of Quebec has, during the past few years, experienced intense exploration by virtually every mining company operating in Canada. As a result of this activity, a number of well-mineralized zinc-copper bearing bodies have been found, some of which will almost certainly go into production. Much of the area has undergone what is now termed ""Saturation Prospecting"" or intense and detailed geological and geophysical surveying, followed by the drilling of nearly all possible bets. Considering only the airborne geophysical surveying, some blocks of ground have been flown by virtually every geophysical instrument which has to date been installed in an aircraft. A list of these different geophysical instruments would include: l. Fluxgate-type total field magnetometers 2. Vertical field magnetometer ,3. Nuclear-precession magnetometers 4. Single-frequency out-of-phase electromagnetometers 5. Dual-frequency out-of-phase electromagnetometers 6. Horizontal component measuring electromagnetometers 7. In-phase and out-of-phase electromagnetometers8. Dip-angle measuring electromagnetometers."

ABSTRACT: The Kupol project, located in Far East Russia, treats a high-grade, free-milling ore containing 25.5 g/t Au, 298.3 g/t Ag, and 0.5% pyrite,with a P70of 53 microns. Most of the gold occurs as elec-trum and the silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite, andproustite. The mill reached the design throughput of 3,000 tpd six months after start-up. AKnelson con-centratorrecovers10.4% gold and 0.5% silver. Leaching (14.5 hours pre-treatment and 116 hours cyanidation)of gravity tailings is performed with the CANMET Enhanced Leach Process (CELP),using only 490 ppm NaCN (cyanide consumption of 1.1 kg/t). The precious metals are recovered by counter-current decantation and the Merrill-Crowe process. Calcium hypochlorite destroyscyanide and thiocyanate. Overall, gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6%,respectively (2.8% and7.5% higher than targets). In the first eight months of 2009, gold and silver recoveries were 95.0% and82.6%, respectively. By August 2009, the mill processed 1.42 million tons of ore with production of 1.1 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver. CELP performance was not affected by changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Additional modifications to the leaching strategy allowed further reduction in cyanide consumption and effluent treatment costs.

The Croft diorite in central England belongs to a suite of Caledonian igneous rocks collectively known as the South Leicestershire diorite complex. Although the intrusions occupy separate outcrops, they are linked at depth to form a single pluton, buried beneath a cover of Triassic sediments (Le Bas, 1972; 1982, Allsop and Arthur, 1983). Both the Caledonian diorites and the over-lying sub-Triassic unconformity have been affected by a complex history of alteration and mineralization which can be subdivided into four stages: (1) deuteric effects, caused by the release ofvolatiles during magmatic cooling; (2) albitization through sodic enrichment; (3) formation of low-temperature laumontite, analcime and calcite veins with associated wall-rock alteration to prehniteand pumpellyite; and (4) sub-Triassic unconformity-hosted base metal, manganese and palygorskite mineralization. Zeolite mineralization occured some 200 Ma later than the intrusion itself, duringpost-Triassic times, as indicated by the presence of a single vein of laumontite and microcrystallinecalcite which cross-cuts the sub-Triassic unconformity surface and enters the overlying Triassic sediments. Evidence from ?uid inclusion work indicates that two ?uids were involved in the deposition of the zeolite veins. One ?uid was initially of relatively high temperature (~100°C to 320°C) and lowsalinity (~0.2 to 5.9 wt% NaCl equiv.), and was probably meteoric in origin, whereas the other wasof relatively low temperature (~41°C to 165°C) and high salinity (~0.4 to 16.72 wt% NaCl equiv.),and is interpreted to represent a basinal brine. During Triassic rifting, thinning and fracturing of the crust, with the possible rise of associated magmas (Halliday and Mitchell, 1984), could have increased permeability and heat ?ow, initiating the circulation of hydrothermal ?uids. Triassic unconformity-hosted base-metal mineralization in Central England is similar to other Triassic-Juras-sic mineralization in Europe (Mitchell and Halliday, 1976).

"The gold mines of Kirkland Lake are in Teck township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, latitude 48°9'N. and longitude 80°3'W., at an elevation of 1,038 feet above sea-level.There are seven contiguous producing mines in a length of 3;1/2 miles along the general east-west strike of the deposits. The seven mines are, in order from west to east, Macassa, Kirkland Lake, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Sylvanite, and Toburn.The first discovery of gold in the zone was made by W. H. Wright in 1911 on the east claim of the Wright-Hargreaves property, and the following year the Tough brothers and H. Oakes found gold in what is now the No. 1 vein_ at the Toburn. Production began at the Toburn in 1915, followed by Teck-Hughes in 1917, Lake Shore in 1918, Kirkland Lake Gold in 1919, Wright-Hargreaves in 1921, Sylvanite in 1927, and Macassa in 1933.To the end of 1946, 31,938,350 tons of ore had been milled at the Kirkland Lake mines, from which 16,132,700 oz. gold, having a value of $498,517,600, were recovered. The bullion varies from mine to mine between 800 and 900 fine, the average for all the mines being 853. Conventional casting at low pouring temperature was employed to produce semisolid metal, SSM, billets of A356 Alloy. The deformation behavior of the as-cast SSM billets was studied using parallel plate compression viscometry. The compression tests were carried out at different applied pressures, and fractions solid. The rheological studies were conducted assuming the SSM slurry behaving like Newtonian and non Newtonian fluids respectively. "Tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy-electron backscattered diffraction (SEM-EBSD) analysis were performed in an Al-Mg-Si alloy to clarify the effect of annealing and cold-rolling reduction on the texture formation. The hot-rolled specimens were cold-rolled with the reduction of 58-75%(CR1), followed by annealing at 773 K for 5 min(IA). The secondary cold-rolling(CR2)for the IA specimens with the reduction of 33–66%, followed by the solution heat treatment(ST), were performed. Focusing on the CR1 and CR2 specimens, the average r-values increased with higher primary and lower secondary cold-rolling reduction, respectively. This was considered to be due to the increase of r-values measured in the direction of 45 degree with respect to rolling direction, caused by the formation of the ß-fiber components (Brass {011}<211>, Copper {112}<111> and S {123}<634>) with high density. Based on the texture analysis of annealed specimens it was suggested that the high density of the ß-fiber components after IA and the small amount of stored strain energy of CR2 introduced by the lower cold-rolling reduction remained the ?-fiber components even after solution treatment.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si alloys have been applied to automobile body applications, due to their excellent paint-bake hardening (age-hardening) and corrosion resistance compared to other aluminum alloy. On the other hand, the mechanical properties and deep drawability of Al-Mg-Si alloys are inferior to those of steels. Thus, it is important to improve the mechanical properties and deep drawability in order to expand the application components. One of the best methods to improve the deep drawability is to increase the Lankford coefficient (r-value). Previous studies reported that the increase of the average r-value ( ) improves the deep drawability. The relationship between the r-value and texture of the alloy is also well known. Inoue et al. reported that the ß-fiber components, such as Brass ({011}<211>), Copper ({112}<111>) and S ({123}<634>), increase the r-value measured in the direction of 45o with respect to the rolling direction. r"
