"Flotation of fine (< 10 µm) minerals is a challenge exacerbated by the emerging practice of fine grinding flotation feed to better liberate targeted minerals; however, the ability of conventional flotation cells to float liberated fines remains questionable. The Gold Ore solution using Mach reactors was tested at Mintek, South Africa, and showed an ~180% increase in the Kelsall kfast factor, a projected recovery improvement of 4% for the Mach-reactor case, and final concentrate grade twice that of conventional flotation. Theory, pilot plant results, and key aspects of plant design, supplemented by operational plant observations after commissioning, are discussed.RÉSUMÉ Le procédé de flottation de minerais fins (< 10 µm) pose de grandes difficultés, lesquelles sont aggravées par la pratique émergente de l’alimentation du circuit de flottation avec des mailles de broyage très fines pour mieux libérer les minéraux ciblés ; la capacité des cellules de flottation classiques à flotter les fines de minerais libérées reste cependant discutable. La solution proposée par la société Gold Ore, qui utilise des réacteurs Mach, a été testée à Mintek, en Afrique du Sud ; elle affichait une augmentation d’environ 180 % du facteur kfast développé par M. "Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. Une étude numérique et expérimentale sur l’écoulement des fluides dans un hydrocyclone (dont on se sert en minéralurgie) a été menée à l’aide des techniques de vélocimétrie par images de particules (PIV, de l’anglais particle image velocimetry) et d’appariement des indices de réfraction. Deux modèles de turbulence ont été utilisés dans ces calculs, à savoir le modèle de turbulence k–? et le modèle aux tensions de Reynolds (RSM, de l’anglais Reynolds stress model). La valeur de la PIV a été mesurée à diverses positions spatiales le long du cyclone. "A plant study of zinc rougher flotation at Brunswick Mining was conducted using lime, soda ash and a combination of both as the pH modifiers in order to establish the effects on sphalerite and pyrite kinetics and mineral selectivity. The plant sampling and analysis was augmented by surface analysis using TOF-LIMS, SEM and XPS as well as fundamental precipitation and surface-charge studies in the sphalerite Ca/C03/S04 system.The results revealed the important role of carbonate ions in cleaning the sphalerite surface for effective activation by CuS04 to occur, and the beneficial role of combined soda ash and lime in increasing pyrite and galena depression.1.0 IntroductionThe studies reported in this paper were initiated as part of an investigation into the causes of a particularly pronounced seasonal deterioration in metallurgical performance at the Brunswick Mining concentrator during the summer of 1995. The concentrator treats a complex base metal ore having a typical feed composition of 9.0% Zn, 3.5% Pb, 0.4% Cu and 100g/t Ag at a current throughput of 9,000 TPD, although at the time of the problem in 1995, the average production rate was closer to 10,500 TPD. Zinc, lead, copper and bulk (zinc-lead) concentrates are produced with overall metal recoveries of 86% zinc, 63% lead, 60% copper and 60% silver; results which are typical of the lower recoveries associated with fine-grained, highly complex VMS and SEDEX type deposits. The main economic minerals of interest are an iron-containing (7% Fe) sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite with the main diluent (about 60% wt) being pyrite.Figure 1 shows a simplified flowsheet of the Brunswick milling circuit while the seasonal decrease in summer metallurgy in 1995 is illustrated in Figure 2. Of significance is the rapid drop in copper and lead recovery in June while there is an apparent delay until late August-September before the zinc deterioration reaches its lowest point. A more typical seasonal effect within the experience of the authors is the reverse of the Brunswick situation, namely an improvement in summer performance thought to be associated with improved differential flotation kinetics during warmer weather leading to better mineral selectivity. The historical Brunswick experience was particularly severe during the summer of 1995 with estimated incremental losses of $10 Million for this period. The potential of the very significant economic benefits to be gained from understanding and hopefully improving the annual drop in performance led to an investigation involving the minesite metallurgical group, the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) as well as researchers in Professor Jim Finch's group at McGill and the surface analytical services and interpretive skills of AMTEL."

"In an effort to increase productivity, the use of fly ash as a binder for consolidated backfill was studied. From laboratory and underground tests f or its cementitious properties and environmental effects, it was found that a portion of Portland cement could be replaced by the same amount of type ""C"" fly ash to produce an acceptable consolidated rockfill product for use at Kidd Creek.The environmental concerns in terms of dust control and emanation of radon gas were unfounded from measurements. The dust count was comparable to the use of Portland cement only, or with ground blast furnace slag, and the radiation readings were low, averaging one-seventh the regulation level.Since May 1984, a total of over 100 000tonnes of fly ash has been consumed as a binder blended with Portland cement, producing over four million tonnes of consolidated rockfill. To date, the fill in the stopes has performed very satisfactorily, while yielding considerable cost savings.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north of the city centre of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonnes of base metal sulphide ore annually. The mining method for both No. I and No .2 mines is mainly sub-level blasthole stoping with delayed backfilling.No. 1 mine was developed with a shaft to a depth of 930 m in 1973 to recover the ore between the floor of the open pit at the 216 m horizon, and the 792 m horizon. Stopes are normally 18 m wide, 22 m to 65 m long, with heights varying from 90 m to 135 m. Vertical rib pillars between stopes are typically 24 m wide and sill pillars are 30 m thick.Pillar recovery is implemented after the consolidated rockfill placed in the mined stopes has cured for a period of at least three months. This allows a maximum recovery of the ore with a minimum of dilution, while also maintaining safe working conditions.No. 2 mine was developed from a second shaft, sunk to a depth of 1530 m in 1978, for the recovery of ore beneath the No. I mine. Sub-level stoping in No .2 mine is similar to No.1 mine in methodology, yet differs in sequencing, as no rib pillars are left."

"We have recently proposed a new ""EQ Coating"" bond coat system to solve the problem of secondary reaction zone (SRZ) formation caused by bond coats applied on the hot section components of modem jet engines. A viable EQ coating alloy was previously found for a representative znd generation superalloy, TMS-82+. It would be ideal if the same could be done for a representative 5th generation superalloy, TMS-173. In this paper, we will show that the coating with the best oxidation resistance in the EQ system of TMS-173, although possessing considerably better resistance than TMS-173, did not have sufficient oxidation resistance. In order to improve the oxidation resistance of the EQ coating for TMS-173, we have ventured into ""Pseudo-EQ coatings"". A diffusion couple between the Pseudo-EQ coating and TMS-173, after 300hrs at 1100°C, had a 0-15µm IDZ, but no SRZ. A diffusion couple between a conventional coating and TMS-173 formed a 80-150 µm SRZ. After a 1 hr oxidation test at 1100°C, the PseudoEQ coating formed a thinner oxide layer than the EQ coating, but still contained NiO and spinel. Aerospace"

"The Cash is one of the largest porphyry copper-molybdenum Deposits found in Yukon to date. It is 80 km northwest of Carmacks, within the unglaciated portion of the Dawson Range, and is associated with the Big Creek fault, an important tectonic feature. Part of the mineralized zone is blanketed by up to 70 m of alluvial drift . The remainder is covered by a relatively thin residual soil layer. The mineralized zone, however, was not detected by conventional stream-sediment sampling because pathfinder elements, such as Cu and Mo, have not been geochemically dispersed into the main drainage system. The deposit was discovered by a combination of soil analysis and inspection of rock fragments from small pits.Twenty widely spaced, shallow drill holes have outlined an areaover 2700 m long and 550 to over 1000m wide that grades more than 0.1% copper equivalent (% CuE = % Cu + (5 x % MoS2)). Two smaller zones grading over 0.4% copper equivalent occur within the larger area. The limits of the widest end of the deposit have not been delineated.The Cash deposit is fairly typical of high-level, calc-alkaline porphyry copper-molydenum occurrrences in the Canadian Cordillera {cf, CIM Special Volume 15) and is representative of most prospects in the Dawson Range. It is associated genetically with a subvolcanic complex of small, irregular stocks and dykes of feldspar porphyry and related breccias of Late Cretaceous age. Copper and molybdenum sulphides occur along fractures, in quartz veinlets and disseminated in feldspar porphyry and in older metasedimentary and intrusive rocks. Higher-grade zones of copper and molybdenum have associated potassic alteration. Phyllic alteration is, in part, superimposed on potassic alteration. Argillic alteration occurs locally.This paper describes the history of the discovery and the geochemical and geophysical characteristics, together .with the regional geology, and the nature and distribution of the host rocks, hypogene mineralization and hydrothermal alteration."

"The increase in the price of gold in the last decade has led to a significant increase in placer gold exploration around the world. Placer deposits occur in depressions along ancient river and stream channels. In many instances these channels have been covered with materials from subsequent erosion or glacial activity. Use of high resolution geophysical techniques to map the bedrock and soil strata can improve the probability of finding the placer deposits. The buried bedrock surface is often the factor controlling deposition. Ground probing radar (GPR) and seismic sounding are complementary high resolution techniques which can be used to map bedrock topography and soil stratigraphy. Current radar instrumentation operates best in coarse grained soils. Penetration depths of up to 30 m have been attained, and stratigraphic horizons have been mapped with spatial resolutions of better than 0.5 m. Although its spatial resolution is considerably lower than radar, seismic refraction achieves superior penetration in electrically conductive environments such as clay and silt soils. The seismic refraction method thus proves to be complementary to the radar method. The seismic reflection technique is analogous to the radar method. Current seismic instrumentation and energy sources however, provide limited spatial resolution and do not permit the use of seismic reflection for reflecting horizons lying at depths of less than 20 m to 30 m.This paper discusses the use of both radar and seismic methods for placer exploration. The radar and seismic techniques, the field methods, equipment, and data displays are presented. Field examples illustrate the high resolution mapping capabilities of the techniques. The radar data agree very well with the borehole data, and in fact they sometimes detect subtle soil strata variations associated with changes of permeability that were not initially observed in the borehole logging. The radar method can give a continuous profile of water table and bedrock in sandy soils. Seismic soundings are necessary to differentiate between the bedrock and water table reflections observed by the radar."

"Abstract - This is the first reported occurrence of an active hydrothermal field in an oceanic fracture zone setting. The hydrothermal field occurs in a pull-apart basin within the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which has four distinct mineral deposit types: (1) barite mounds and chimneys, (2) barite stockwork breccia, (3) silica-barite beds, and (4) silica, barite, and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide in sediments. All deposit types contain minor amounts of sulfides. In barite stockwork, silica-barite beds, and mineralized sediment, Ba, Pb, Ag, S, Au, Zn, Cu, Hg, Tl, As, Mo, Sb, U, Cd, and Cu are enriched relative to unmineralized rocks and sediments of the BFZ. Fe and Mn are not enriched in the barite stockwork or silica-barite beds, but along with P, Co, and Mg are enriched in the mineralized sediments. Silver contents in deposits of the hydrothermal field range up to 86 ppm, gold to 0.7 ppm, zinc to 3.2%, copper to 0.8%, and barium to 22%.Mineralization occurred by diffuse, low to intermediate temperature (mostly <250°C) discharge of hydrothermal fluids through pillow lavas and ponds of mixed volcaniclastic and biosiliceous sediments. Bacterial mats were mineralized by silica, barite, and minor Fe hydroxides, or less commonly, by Mn oxyhydroxides. Pervasive mineralization of bacterial mats resulted in formation of silica- barite beds. Silica precipitated from hydrothermal fluids by conductive cooling and mixing with seawater. Sulfate, U, and rare earth elements (REEs) in barite were derived from seawater, whereas the REE content of hydrothermal silica deposits and mineralized sediments is associated with the aluminosilicate detrital fraction. Fe-, Zn-, Cu-, Pb-, and Hg-sulfide minerals, Ba in barite, and Eu in all mineralized deposits were derived from hydrothermal fluids. Manganese oxides and associated elements (Co, Sb, Mo, W, Cl, and Cu) and Fe oxides and associated elements (Be, B, P, and Mo) precipitated as the result of mixing of hydrothermal fluids with seawater."

"A program of mapping, sampling and testing to determine the potential of the aggregate resources throughout Newfoundland and Labrador was commenced in 1978. A 6-km-wide corridor parallel to all transportation routes was selected as the study area.The study consisted of a preliminary surficial interpretation followed by field mapping and sampling. Granular resources were sampled at a 500-m interval and non-granular materials were sampled at a 1.5- to 2-km interval. Data were gathered on landforms and stratigraphy as well as a field description of the sample and deposit types. Particle-size and lithologic analyses of the samples were also conducted.The locations of samples and deposits were mapped on 1:50,000 topographic base maps and summarized for publication at a 1:250,000 scale. Surficial geology maps were produced at a 1:50,000 scale. A computer program is being developed for the search and retrieval of field data.The first phase of the Inventory of Aggregate Resources program is nearing completion and to date has collected information on approximately 9,500 samples throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This data will be used to provide f or the effective management of these vital non-renewable aggregate resources.The mineral aggregate industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is very competitive, but undercapitalized when compared to other provinces. The demand for aggregates is forecasted to increase to in excess of23 million tons per annum by the year 2002.In terms of over-all mineral production, the extraction of sand, gravel and stone has a significant impact when compared to other minerals in terms of value and tonnage produced.IntroductionThe province of Newfoundland has approximately 18,000 km of coastline. A large proportion of the population lives in coastal communities where, traditionally, beaches have been a major source of construction materials. Beaches have, therefore, often been subjected to overutilization, resulting in erosion of back beach areas or adjacent headlands."

"Abstract - The Orvan Brook deposit is one of several (Zn+Pb>>Cu)-rich sulfide deposits hosted by the Spruce Lake Formation (California Lake Group) in the northwestern part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. This parautochthonous deposit is hosted by a narrow band of highly deformed, locally graphitic shale that appears to conformably overlie felsic volcanic rocks of the Spruce Lake Formation, and is in tectonic contact with overlying mafic volcanic and related sedimentary rocks of the Canoe Landing Lake Formation. The Spruce Lake Formation is dominated by felsic volcanic rocks and subordinate fine-grained sedimentary rocks, and mafic volcanic rocks (Canoe Landing Lake member). The felsic volcanic rocks can be divided into aphyric and feldspar-phyric rock types. The feldspar-phyric rocks and a few of the aphyric varieties have a Zr/TiO2 ratio of 0.06, and fall into the California Lake Group field on a Y/TiO2 versus Zr/TiO2 diagram. In contrast, the aphyric felsic volcanic rocks have Zr/TiO2 ˜ 0.09 and are marked by high Zr and Th, which is consistent with highly fractionated felsic magma of Spruce Lake affinity. Major and trace element analyses of host rocks suggest that weak to moderate hydrothermal alteration developed on the south side (stratigraphic footwall) of the deposit, which is consistent with a north-younging succession. The sulfide lens strikes east-west for approximately 2.3 km, extends down-dip for at least 500 m locally, and has an average thickness of between 0.75 and 1 m, but is locally up to 5.5 m thick. The contacts of the massive sulfide lens with its host rocks are invariably sharp. Host rocks show evidence of intense ductile deformation as well as later brittle deformation. Compositional layering and sulfide breccia textures in the sulfide body are interpreted to result from deformation or tectonic enhancement of original primary layering. The deposit contains an estimated resource of 2.69 Mt grading 1.73% Pb, 5.95% Zn, 0.37% Cu, 72 g/t Ag, and 0.9 g/t Au. Similarities in bulk d34S between the Orvan Brook (+8.6‰) and the nearby Cu-rich McMaster deposit (+8.2‰) suggest a common depositional setting."

"Repeated 3D terrestrial digital photogrammetric surveys were conducted on hard rock mine pillars to characterize damage during secondary mining. Damage was quantified by measuring Depth of Failure, DOF, from spalling material and crack intensity, D21. These damage values were then correlated to visually assessed Pillar Damage Ratings and numerically estimated pillar loads. Measured damage, particularly Depth of Failure, correlated well with Pillar Damage Ratings. Numerical predicted pillar stress vs. damage exhibited the expected trend with shorter pillars being stronger. High resolution photographs and 3D models were also used to characterize damage mechanisms, which were found to be structurally constrained. INTRODUCTIONThe Doe Run companies Southeast Missouri Operations consists of six room and pillar lead mines (Brushy Creek, No. 29, Casteel, Buick, Fletcher and, Sweetwater) (The Doe Run Company, 2014). The mines are hosted in the Carbonates and Shales of the Viburnum trend with mining depths varying from 180 to 300 m. Pillars are commonly cut square with widths varying from 7 to 9 m and heights generally between 5 and 18 m, resulting in extraction ratios between 80 and 85% (Roberts et al., 1999). Figure 1 presents an idealized stratigraphic section through the Viburnum trend and Figure 2 shows a plan view of the five areas spanning the three mines included in this study."

"The construction of the new Scissors Creek shaft at the Rocanville mine, the first potash shaft successfully completed in Saskatchewan Canada since 1979, is summarized here. Located 15km from the existing Rocanville surface plant, this new 6 m inside-diameter, 1121 m deep service shaft was built for fresh-air ventilation and access. Shaft construction in the Saskatchewan sedimentary basin involves sinking through five different rock-types: glacial tills, shales, sandstones, carbonates and salts. The first four rock- types are all water-bearing, and the salts will dissolve in water. This results in five different sinking challenges and requires five different shaft lining designs. The upper 580 m of rock (the till – shale – sands sequence) was frozen before sinking, and grouting methods were used for water control through deeper carbonate levels. Challenges that were faced and overcome during shaft sinking are reviewed, and ideas that future operators working in sedimentary basin environments might consider in order to avoid these difficulties are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Nutrien Inc. (formerly Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. / PotashCorp) Rocanville potash mine in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada has been in continuous production since 1971. Devonian potash, formed approximately 380 Mybp, is mined in a sedimentary basin environment at approximately 1000 m depth below surface in this area of Saskatchewan. The predominant use for finished potash products is fertilizer: potash fertilizer is concentrated and nearly pure KCl (i.e. greater than 95% pure KCl). Currently 10 potash mines are in operation in Canada, all in Saskatchewan. In 2018 Saskatchewan mines produced ˜ 23 million tonnes of finished potash products, which is approximately 35% of World demand of ˜ 66 million tonnes for the year (e.g. Nutrien Inc., 2019).In November, 2007 it was announced that the Rocanville potash mine would be expanded to increase production from 3.0 Million tonnes per year (Mtpy) to approximately 6.0 Mtpy of finished potash products, requiring an increase in hoisting capability from approximately 9.0 Mtpy to over 18.0 Mtpy. The Rocanville potash mine has historically been accessed through two shafts: a production and ventilation exhaust shaft, and a service and ventilation fresh-air shaft located approximately 200 m from each other. All surface offices, processing facilities, etc. are situated near these original shafts.A very important part of the recent Rocanville expansion involved the construction of a new service shaft (6 m diameter, 1121 m deep) for fresh-air ventilation and access, approximately 15km west of the existing surface plant. Once this third shaft was completed in 2015, the historical service shaft was converted to a second exhaust and production shaft. Three shafts are now available for mine access, ventilation and ore hoisting at Rocanville. As of December 31, 2017, annual nameplate capacity for Rocanville was 6.5 million"

FOR MORE THAN 200 years, the Kochiu district of Yunnan province has been, and it still is, the hub of China&apos;s tin industry. The district produces annually from 80 to 90 per cent of that country&apos;s out-put of tin, which averages about 9,300 tons a year and places China fifth among the tin producing nations of the world. The tin ore reserves of the country are estimated (1) at 1,873,370 metric tons, of which 1,500,000 tons are in the Kochiu district. The mill of the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, described in this paper, is the only one of its kind in China. MINING AND SMELTING There are only two tin mines in the Kochiu district operating with modern equipment -the Hsin-Chang and the Lao-Chang, both owned by the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, a government company. The Hsin-Chang mine has four working levels with cross-cuts 6 ft. by 6 ft. and is equipped with steel mine cars and trucks to haul the ore. The ore is hoisted to surface in a three-compartment shaft and transferred to the mill by a 4-kilometer aerial tram. The Lao-Chang mine has two circular shafts 656 feet apart, each equipped with two cages. Haulage-ways 1,600 meters and 1,000 meters long, respectively, have been driven to the southwest from these shafts and are connected by three cross-cuts.

The selection of a mining plant for carrying on development work presents many problems distinct in themselves, and affected by various local factors. In this paper, the writer proposes outlining and discussing in some detail the chief factors governing the economic selection of such plants. This will be followed by an enumeration of the underground and surface plant required for carrying on several hypothetical exploratory and mining operations. Where it is impossible or not convenient to obtain hydro-electric power, and where wood for fuel is scarce, we now find oil engines being used. A 100 h.p. oil engine, such as would be required to operate a three-drill air compressor, consumes approximately five Imperial gallons of fuel-oil per hour at full load. On the basis of a 60 per cent load factor, this gives, for eight hours&apos; operation, a probable actual consumption of twenty-four Imperial gallons.

"Nineteen streams in the copper and zinc flotation units of the concentrator of the Matagami Division of Noranda Inc. have been sampled f or particle size distributions, chemical assays, and gold and silver contents in each particle size interval. The data are upgraded by the mass balance package BILMA T. These results, in conjunction with microprobe analyses, are used to quantify the silver losses in the copper cleaning flotation stages and to determine how over-all silver and three silver-bearing minerals are recovered in the plant final products. "International competition is presenting the Canadian steel industry with a major challenge. While Canadian companies have invested in new technology, research and development, activity by Canadian industry, in general, lags significantly behind that of its major competitors. While OECD countries increased their research and development spending during the 1980s, Canada&apos;s R&D funding levels have changed little since the early 1970s and have actually dropped since 1986, despite greater public discussion on the issue. This fact is reflected in the relatively slower pace of innovation in the Canadian steel industry, despite the efforts of both government and industry.In addition, there are a number of factors that undermine the competitiveness of the Canadian steel industry, in particular in relation to the United States. Among these are higher interest rates, labour costs and tax rates, as well as an overvalued Canadian dollar. Canadian steel companies are thus feeling the full impact of the current economic recession. This recession, combined with recent strikes, have, for example, caused serious losses for Algoma and Stelco.In spite of these objective difficulties, the Canadian steel industry has been able to survive and continues to strive for a leadership position in the world market. Since World War II, heavy investment in new technology has allowed the industry to upgrade its facilities and increase productivity, while at the same time improving quality and reducing pollution. This last point is particularly important in view of public insistence on improvements to the quality of the environment. Over the next decade, this technological innovation must be maintained and intensified if industry is to meet the challenge of international competition and attain a leadership position."

FOR the past seven years, all flotation at the Britannia mill has been done in Forrester Air-Lift cells. Prior to 1931, the roughing and part of the cleaning operation had been performed in four 21-cell and two 14-cell M.S. machines. The resulting economies in reagent, power, maintenance, and general operating costs, and the increased recovery, more than justified the exclusive use of the Forrester machine. About three years ago, the possibility of still further improving the efficiency of the flotation section was the subject of considerable discussion and experiment. Arising from these experiments, tests were made of the practicability of using a cell of greater depth than that of any pneumatic or mechanically-agitated machine in common use. Cells were constructed with depths of 7 .5 feet, 10 feet, and 15 feet, and, in all cases, a very definite improvement in operation was indicated. The cell now being used in the mill treats from 5,500 to 6,200 tons of dry feed per day. It is 100 ft. long by 5 ft. wide by 8 ft. deep, and has replaced a total length of over 500 feet of standard Forrester machine. The choice of a depth of 8 feet was governed by the type of blower which was available-in this case, a Roots-Connersville blower, driven by a synchronous motor and delivering 6,000 c.f.m. of free air at 4.0 pounds per square inch. At the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Company, where a new mill was recently built, all flotation is carried on in cells 10 feet deep, with good results.

"Afton Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) operates an 8500-tpd open-pit copper-gold mine near Kamloops, R.C. The pit is currently 480 feet deep and will reach an ultimate depth of 800 feet. The east, south and west walls of the pit are composed of Triassic andesites (Nicola Volcanic Formation) and contemporaneous sub-volcanic intrusions of micro-syenite, microdiorite, diorite and picrite-basalt (Iron Mask Pluton). The north wall of the pit consists of Tertiary sandstones, shales and mudstones (Tranquille formation) and dacitic dykes, sills, flows and tuff s (Kamloops Volcanic Formation).The Afton copper-gold orebody (30 million tons of open-pit ore with a grade of 1.0 per cent copper, 0.016 oz/ton gold and 0.12 oz/ton silver) occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask Pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The Triassic-Tertiary contact is a complex fault system dipping 65 degrees southward and causing the Triassic rocks to overlie the Tertiary rocks. The detailed trace of this contact is very intricate due to the mutual interference of three principal fault systems.The dominant geological structures in both Triassic and Tertiary rocks are faults striking WNW and dipping 65 degrees southward, i.e. sub-parallel to the orebody (strike faults). Cross faults and oblique faults are abundant and highly significant in some sectors of the pit. The Tertiary sedimentary rocks show an early series of northwesterly plunging folds deformed by a later series of northeasterly striking folds. Major lithological and structural boundaries divide the pit into 8 structural domain s within which the pitwall slope stability is controlled by the local geological structures and lithology.Assay data from production blasthole samples and exploration diamond drillhole samples show a log-normal frequency distribution, with a fairly low relative variance. Variograms computed from production blasthole samples show good continuity with elliptical horizontal zones of influence which are truncated by the major faults that bound the ore zone."

"Over the years, ore geologists have made innumerable observations as to the relationships of certain kinds of ore deposits to particular types of rocks and to the types of primary and secondary structures that these rocks contain. On the basis of these, the places in which to look for new are deposits are more clearly defined than they would be in an exploration program based largely or solely on concepts of ore genesis. This paper discusses the affinity of certain rock types and structures for such ore deposits as: (1) tin-tungsten associated with granitoid rocks; (2) lead-zinc of simple mineralogy in carbonate rocks; (3) massive base-metal sulphides in sedimentary or volcanic rocks; (4) massive base-metal sulphides and oxides at, or near, contacts with igneous rocks; (5) gold or gold-uranium in, or adjacent to, conglomerates; (6) shale- or sandstone-hosted copper; and (7) porphyry coppers. Additional varieties could be considered, but it appears that these examples are sufficient to demonstrate the validity of the suggestion that the use of observational characteristics is far more useful in mineral exploration than that of theories of ore genesis.As by-products of the theory of plate tectonics, many concepts have been put forward to explain how ore deposits of different kinds have been formed. Most, if not all, of these theories seem to be as valid as present-day information permits. However, do these ideas add to the ability of the ore geologist to find ore deposits? I doubt it, and offer reasons as to why I think so.To produce maximum results in any exploration program, the one that makes the greatest use of information produced about the geologic environment of the area being investigated is the one that will provide the greatest return in deposits found for the sponsors of the program. Such exploration is best designated as total exploration, and it certainly is the most effective way of uncovering such new deposits as may exist in the area being studied in particular and of adding to the sum total of nonfuel minerals deposits available to the industrial world in general."

"Los Bronces had two ROM dump leach operations designated Leach I and Leach II. Leach I was commissioned in 1998 and stopped in 2014 due to the mine requirements. Leach II plant, commissioned in early 2002, was built to treat around 700 million tons of marginal ROM ore averaging 0.45 % total copper. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides.The original electrowinning plant design capacity for copper production was nominal 19,500 tonnes per year at a current density of 276 A/m2 and a current efficiency of 92%. Presently, Los Bronces San Francisco plant typically operates at current densities between 390 and 440 A/m2, much higher than the average in the industry, with current efficiencies around 93% and a maximum copper cathodes production of 37,200 tonnes per year.In order to accomplish these achievements, a number of modifications in the process conditions, in the cell hardware and in the operational procedures have been implemented. In the first case, the specific flowrate, copper concentration and temperature of the electrolyte were modified to accommodate the operational requirements facilitating the increased current density. Associated with the cell hardware, a six cells expansion was added, upgraded equipotential inner cell busbars were installed and the cross section of the cathode hanger bars was enlarged for increased current carrying capacity. Documented operational procedures like short circuit detection and cathode weight control were improved.The modifications implemented and the results obtained are discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONLos Bronces Division of Anglo American Chile is located up in the Andes Mountains, northeast of Santiago. It had two cathode plants, Los Bronces at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.) commissioned in 1998 and closed in 2014 and San Francisco at an altitude of 2800 m.a.s.l. and in operation since 2002.The process is leaching run off mine (ROM) low grade copper sulphide ore in dumps. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides. The average grade is 0.45% total copper (Cut).At Los Bronces dump, Leach I plant, the pregnant leach solution (PLS) was collected and stored in an underground reservoir. From there, it was fed to a solvent extraction plant with a series-parallel configuration in two extraction stages and one stripping stage. The electrolyte produced was fed to the electrowinning plant having 30 cells and 60 cathodes per cell. Maximum capacity of this plant was 12,000 tonnes per year (tpy)."
