The North Saskatchewan River flows southwest to northeast through a 22-km-long valley in the City of Edmonton, supplying the drinking water to dozens of downstream communities. During heavy rains, combined sewers occasionally overflow into the river, which has a significant negative impact on the water quality and the sensitive environment. The West Edmonton Sanitary Sewer (WESS) W12, a syphon connecting the Rat Creek Trunk to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant across the river, was designed and constructed to take the overflow to the wastewater treatment plant. Due to the complexity of the project, various 3D technologies were applied to facilitate decision-making processes. 3D models were developed for design review and design conflict detection, while 4D models were established to help create a robust construction schedule. Construction sequencing animation was used to convey design intents and demonstrate construction stages to contractors and workers. The combined applications of 3D technologies helped the project team to identify critical issues, and assured effective communication among engineers, management, contractors, and other parties. Therefore, it provided more opportunities for the success of the project.

"Abstract -The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered matie intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendritic­ pegmatitic matie pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and mag­ matie breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to lOOJo within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that af­ fected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd :Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Severa! factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic inter­ action with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion .The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril'sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Com­ plex, U.S.A.) in terrns of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economie concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginal­ type POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

Gold is considered the most inert of all metallic elements, but the metal can show catalytic activity when prepared by specific techniques. Preparation techniques being used to prepare gold catalysts systems mainly involve precipitation methods incorporating gold compounds or complexes. This paper introduces a totally different method for the preparation of gold-based heterogeneous catalysts that can be used for oxidation and reduction reactions, as well as electrocatalysts. The method involves alloying of gold with a less noble metal, such as aluminium, to form a gold-containing intermetallic precursor. AuAl2 was produced by melting gold and aluminium together in a vacuum arc furnace under a protective atmosphere. The aluminium is then dissolved from the AuAl2 precursor by means of NaOH to produce a highly porous gold structure. The paper also reports on a method of incorporating transition metal oxide(s) with the porous gold to form an active heterogeneous catalyst. Promoter elements can also be melted with AuAl2 to improve catalytic activity. Alloying has the advantage that the promoter element can be in contact on atomic level with the gold. In-situ xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have also been done on the porous gold catalysts to further clarify the CO oxidation mechanism on gold-based catalysts.

Bien que le système de ventilation du Puits Penna soit de taille imposante et que plus de $30M y seront engloutis pour son développement, aucun budget spécifique n?avait été préalablement consenti pour refroidir l?air acheminé aux places de travail dans la partie profonde de la mine. Le système de ventilation a été conçu en deux étapes distinctes : le réseau du haut de la mine lequel dessert jusqu?à 1550 m de profondeur et le réseau du bas de la mine (de 1550 m à 2200m) qui a été créé ultérieurement. Le réseau inférieur a été imaginé de façon à acheminer l?air frais directement au gisement et de permettre l?évacuation aux extrémités afin de rejeter l?air chaud immédiatement après l?avoir utilisé. Au total, lorsque le réseau de ventilation sera complété, plus de 670 m3/s d?air sera véhiculé dont jusqu?à 495 m3/s pour la partie inférieure de la mine considérant une capacité totale maximum de 710 m3/s en utilisant la mine adjacente.

"Talc ore from Bakertalc, High water, Quebec analyzing about 60% talc, previously dry ground to about 95% minus 53 µm was beneficiated in an 11.4 kg/ h pilot-plant flotation circuit. A concentrate of 95.9% talc (necessary for paper-grade) was obtained at a recovery at 75.3% by employing 53 g/t of Dowfroth 250 collector at pH 9.2; further cleaning increased the grade to 97.2% talc at a recovery of 57.5%.Flotation of fresh ground 60% minus 44 µm ore at a feed rate of 18.6 kg/ h produced a grade of 96.4% talc with a recovery of 78.2%, using Aerofroth 70 collector a six carbon-branch chain alcohol, at pH 9.2.The similarity in the concentrate grade and recovery between pre-ground and fresh-ground ore indicated that it was not neces¬sary to grind to 95% minus 53/2m to achieve comparable selectivity. A grind of 60% minus 44 pm corresponds to 100% minus 300 µm.Flotation retention times obtained with fresh ground ore indicate 33 min. for combined rougher/scavenger, and 15 min. each for the first and second cleaners.Talc-magnesite flotation separation is explained in terms of physico-chemical forces, with reference to surface charge and adsorption mechanisms."

"In the present study, the recovery of rare earth elements (REE) in the nitrophosphate process of fertilizer production is investigated. The apatite has been recovered from iron ore tailings by flotation. After digestion of apatite in concentrated nitric acid, Ca(NO3)2.4H2O is first separated by cooling crystallization and then the REEs are recovered by precipitation. Optimum conditions in these steps have been determined in a previous study. The precipitate mainly consists of CaHPO4.2H2O and REE phosphates.In the present study, selective dissolution and re-precipitation have been studied in order to obtain a precipitate that is more concentrated in REEs. The precipitate was selectively dissolved in nitric and phosphoric acid at different acidities (pH 6 to 0) with the liquid /solid ratio of 100 mL/g. It is shown that most of the CaHPO4.2H2O and other calcium containing compounds will be dissolved at pH 2 while the REE phosphates are not dissolved above a pH of approximately 2. Thus, by partial dissolution of the REE precipitate at pH 2.5 most of the solid calcium phosphates will be dissolved and the remaining solid phase, which is more concentrated in REEs, can be filtered off as a fairly concentrated REE solid mass and the liquor can be recycled back to recover more P nutrients. Alternatively, the REE enriched precipitate was dissolved completely in nitric acid and re-precipitated again by addition of ammonium hydroxide to pH 1.2. A chemical equilibrium software, MEDUSA (Puigdomenech, 2013) has been used to evaluate the experimental results and to estimate the optimum conditions for selectively dissolving the precipitate."

"This paper describes the development of a process flowsheet designed to provide high dewatering rates and to bring about savings in tailing disposal costs. The flowsheet comprises a hydrocyclone, a settling cone and a thickener arranged in closed circuit. The mill tailing, after pulp density adjustment, is fed to the hydrocyclone which yields two products. The underflow product is sent to the settling cone for further dewatering. The overflow product, together with the settling cone overflow, goes to the thickener which, with the aid of flocculants, gives a clear effluent and a relatively dilute underflow. The latter combines with the original mill tailing to form the hydrocyclone feed. Solids finally leave the system in the settling cone underflow which can reach pulp densities of up to 78%, making it suitable for direct disposal or for use as mine backfill.Some discussion is included for the selection and sizing of equipment required for this process. INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an essential process for the disposal of mill tailings which forms an added burden in milling practice, often with little or no return. It is, therefore, desirable to conduct this process as economically as possible. One way of reducing costs would be to increase the rate of dewatering so that savings can be made in the size of dewatering unit s which would lead to lower capital and operating expenditures.A common method of dewatering mill tailings is gravity sedimentation which is frequently carried out with the aid of flocculation. In most cases, flocculation greatly enhances the sedimentation process, but only until a pulp density of 50% to 55% is reached in the settled material.Centrifugal sedimentation in hydrocyclones can provide high pulp densities rapidly, but does not result in a clear effluent.This paper outlines a suitable combination of gravity and centrifugal sedimentations that results in an over-all high rate of dewatering. The system developed produces a material of high pulp density while at the same time giving clear effluent."

Trend surface analysis was used to investigate the geochemical dispersion patterns of Si, Ai, Fe, Mg, Ca, Na, K, Ti and Rb in the footwall of the Seneca massive sulphide prospect in southwestern British Columbia. Surfaces for various element ratios were also produced to see if the distributions of the elements are related to each other. Trends developed by the elements redistributed during hydrothermal alteration may be difficult to detect for various reasons, such as too few and widely separated sample points, random analytical errors or local variations in rock chemical composition that are not related to regional trends. Trend surface analysis is useful to distinguish regional trends from local fluctuations. The computer program used in this study is capable of calculating surfaces up to the 6th degree polynomial, but provides for automatic termination when the variables in the equation for successive surfaces become effectively collinear. With the relatively small number of data points used (21 samples) in this study, such termination occurred after the quadratic surface. Results show that, at the Seneca prospect, Mg and K increase, and Na and Ca decrease, toward a common centre which corresponds closely with the best drill-core intersections of ore. The centre is interpreted as a volcanic vent and as the source of mineralization . Quadratic surfaces for element ratios show that K/Ca decreases and Fe/Mg increases away from this vent. Thin-section and X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that these variations reflect sericitization of plagioclase and an increase in the Mg content of chlorite near the vent. The mineralization , rock types and element dispersion patterns at the Seneca prospect are similar to those reported for volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits at Bathurst, New Brunswick, and in the Hokuroko district of Japan.

Particle concentration distributions in a leaching tank have been estimated using a novel experimental approach that takes advantage of the galvanic interactions that occur between pyrite (FeS2) particles and a Pt electrode. The collision of FeS2 particles with Pt changes the open circuit potential measured with the electrode due to galvanic interactions. To discern particle collisions with the Pt electrode from experimental noise a simple analytical procedure was first adopted although the use of techniques involving frequency domain analysis is also briefly presented and discussed. Although this method is still under development, it is simple to implement and can yield valuable information regarding the hydrodynamic behavior of solid particles in stirred tanks in very short times. Finally, the advantages and drawbacks of the technique are discussed.

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. "The degree of uncertainty associated with a natural diamond resource is important to quantify from the time of discovery through the production lifetime. Data collection occurs during the discovery, exploration, delineation, and production or recovery phases. Quantifying the relationship between data and uncertainty is an important component of project valuation. The value of data is measured as their potential to reduce uncertainty if they are collected. A method is developed using Monte Carlo simulation for predicting resource uncertainty and valuing data during critical phases of development, particularly discovery and exploration. The technique is applied to diamond pipe deposits.RÉSUMÉ Il est important de quantifier le degré d’incertitude associé à une ressource diamantifère naturelle, depuis le moment de sa découverte et durant toute la durée de l’exploitation. La collecte de données se fait durant les phases de découverte, d’exploration, de délimitation, et de production ou de récupération. La quantification de la relation entre les données et l’incertitude est une composante importante de l’évaluation du projet. La valeur des données est mesurée en tant que leur potentiel à réduire l’incertitude si elles sont recueillies. Une méthode a été développée qui utilise la simulation de Monte Carlo pour prédire l’incertitude de la ressource et évaluer les données durant les phases critiques du développement, surtout celles de la découverte et de l’exploration. "There are a number of nitrate-containing wastewater sources, as concentrated as 30 wt % NO3 and as large as 2000 m3/day, in the nuclear fuel cycle. The biological reduction of nitrate in waste water to gaseous nitrogen, accompanied by the oxidation of a nutrient carbon source to gaseous carbon dioxide, is an ecologically sound and cost-effective method of nitrate waste disposal. These nitrate-containing wastewater sources can be successfully biologically denitrified to meet discharge standards in the range of 10 to 20 g N(NO3-)/m3 by the use of a fluidized bed bioreactor. The denitrification bacteria are a mixed culture derived from garden soil; the major strain is Pseudomonas. In the fluidized-bed bioreactor, the bacteria are allowed to attach to 0.25- to 0.50-mm-diam. coal fluidization particles, which are then fluidized by the upward flow of influent wastewater. Maintaining the bacteria-to-coal weight ratio at approximately 1:10 results in a bioreactor bacteria loading of greater than 20,000 g/m3,This paper describes the results of a bio denitrification R&D program based on the use of fluidized bioreactors capable of operating at nitrate levels of up to 7000 g/m3 and achieving denitrification rates as high as 80 g N(N03-) per day per litre of empty bioreactor volume. IntroductionThe discharge of wastewater containing nitrate at concentrations greater than stipulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) creates an environmental hazard and constitutes a civil and/ or criminal legal liability.(I.2) At present, we have three options: (1) recycle and reuse of nitrate streams the total economic and technical balance should be Closely examined; (2) use of an alternative acid, which may pose an entirely different set of problems ; or (3) disposal of nonreusable nitrate sources by an environmentally acceptable procedure."

A process utilizing ozone for the precipitation of cobalt from nickel sulphate liquors containing ammonium sulphate has been developed. Best results were obtained using nickel carbonate to maintain solution pH at 5.0 to 5.5. Work was performed both in column and stirred-tank reactors. Variables studied included neutralizer type and concentration, NH4+ concentration, temperature, Ni++ and Co++ concentration, per cent O3 in the O2 carrier gas, O3 input rate and agitation. The over-all rate of cobalt rejection increased sharply with increasing agitation and ozone concentration in the gas phase, reflecting relatively slow transfer of ozone from the gas to the liquid phase.

"The Ansil deposit is located in the Noranda mining camp in the southern part of the Abitibi greenstone belt. /twas discovered in 1981 and production began in 1989 with proven reserves of 1.58 Mt grading 7.2% copper, 0.9% zinc, 26.5 glt of silver and 1.6 glt of gold. It is centered at a depth of 1.3 kilometre and represents one of the deepest ore discoveries ever made from surface.The deposit consists of a single massive sulphide lens located at the contact between the Northwest Rhyolite and the Rusty Ridge Andesite. The lens strikes north-south and dips 50° east. The thickness of the lens may reach up to 35 m and can change very abruptly both along strike and along dip. The maximum thicknesses of the sulphide lens are reached in its upper (western) and at its lower (eastern) edges, thus giving the deposit its present shape of two sulphide domes connected by a thinner central portion. The lower dome is underlain by a thick accumulation of massive magnetite which may reach 10 to 15m in thickness. The upper and lower domes are underlain by two distinct pipe-shaped zones of stringer and disseminated sulphides which merge with a larger stringer zone at depth.The Ansi/ deposit displays strong relationships between its morphology and the distribution of metals. Hydrothermal alteration consists of chloritization and sericitization. Chlorite alteration is closely associated with stringer sulphide mineralization while sericite is developed in diffuse zones bordering the chloritic zones. Unlike other similar deposits, the Ansil deposit is characterized by very extensive alteration and sulphide mineralization in the hangingwall of the massive sulphides. Several features of the deposit are consistent with an origin from a submarine hydrothermal system which was particularly long-lived, and which thus promoted the build-up of very high fluid temperatures with extensive replacement (and enrichment) of pre-existing sulphides after their original deposition onto the seafloor."

"ABSTRACTA brief background on in-situ testing of mine backfill, as well as pressuremeter testing is briefly described, and results from an in-situ testing on paste backfill are presented. A series of self-boring pressuremeter tests were done from the top of a backfilled stope in an underground mine. The tests were conducted along a 20-metre vertical line in the centre of the stope. Some 14 tests were performed along this depth. The instrument used was a Camkometer built by Cam Insitu, Cambridge. The instrument proved to be efficient and reliable for underground testing in a cemented paste backfill. The testing program was conducted within the planned schedule with a high success rate. The test done in this study permitted the measurement of paste backfill strength, stiffness and in-situ horizontal stress within the backfill. RésuméUn bref historique des essais in situ dans le remblai minier est présenté. L’essai pressiométrique est décrit succinctement et des résultats d’une campagne d’essai dans un remblai en pâte sont présentés. Un programme d’essais au pressiomètre auto-foreur a été réalisé à partir du sommet d’un chantier remblayé sous terre. Les essais ont été réalisés le long d’un ligne vertical d’environ 20 mètres pour un total de 14 mesures. Le Camkometer de la firme Cam Insitu de Cambridge a été utilisé. Cet instrument s’est avéré efficace et fiable pour tester le remblai en pâte cimenté sous terre. Le programme d’essai s’est déroulé à l’intérieur de l’échéancier prévu avec un taux de réussite élevé. Ces essais ont permis de déterminer la résistance, la rigidité de ce remblai ainsi que les pressions in-situ prévalant dans le remblai."

"This paper addresses the occurrence and indicated causes of conveyor fires in North American and European underground mines. Some significant convey or fires which have been experienced in recent years in Canadian hardrock mines are then reviewed. The nature of existing conveyor monitoring technology is considered in the context of such fire hazards. Experiences with new monitoring technology recently installed at several conveyor sites at Inca Ltd. mines are then reviewed.IntroductionFires associated with conveyors have long been recognized as a serious hazard in underground coal mines. Recently, however, there have been some significant conveyor fires in Canadian underground hardrock mines. These offer important evidence as to the nature and causes of potential hardrock mine fifes. They also warrant attention with a view to improving over-all mine design, ventilation and emergency preparedness.In addition, a new era in mine communications and monitoring technology has been entered which should offer improved capability to protect against such fires. This paper was motivated by the need to understand the causes and mechanisms of conveyor fires in order to improve their safety. This should be possible through implementing more effective monitoring systems, as well as improving conveyor design. Underground mines are becoming more intensively mechanized, with less human surveillance of equipment and a greater dependency on remote monitoring systems."

"Power requirements of belt conveyor drives are usually estimated based on the calculated belt tension which equals the sum of unit resistances to motion which the belt has to overcome. In most situations, the value of various unit resistances can be accurately predicted using published information (5,6,8,12). A simpler approach calls for use of standard formula and tabulated values of related factors which reflect various features of both the conveyor and the transported material (2,3,7) . None of these approaches is reliable when materials with unique properties are conveyed, nor if applied to conveyors working in extreme climatic conditions. Such is the case of oil sand mines in northern Alberta.There the bitumen content of oil sand causes it to behave in a unique manner. Furthermore the conveyors operate year around, with winter temperatures often lower than - 40°C. It was the objective of presented investigations to quantify the power requirements of conveyors, and related resistance to motion for the conveyors used in oil sand mines during winter operations.The other objective was to quantify the drive power requirements of oil sand conveyors during start-up. These requirements are usually much higher than those during norm al operation, and their quantification is of paramount importance for operation of large conveyors."

"Atmospheric leaching of chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solutions is a slow process due to the mineral’s passivation. We have investigated the nature of the passive film in this work. Electrochemical reduction and oxidation of chalcopyrite over the potential range of -0.5 to 1.2 VSHE were investigated in 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution (pH 0.3) at 25 ºC by multicyclic voltammetry and open circuit potential measurement. The influence of scan limits on the evolution of current peaks was studied with both stationary and rotating electrodes. It was observed that the anodic oxidation of chalcopyrite begins at potentials above 0.6 VSHE, most likely by preferential dissolution of iron atoms over copper atoms. The selective electro-dissolution process results in formation of a metal-deficient sulfide passive film (i.e. Cu1- xFe1-yS2, y > x). The passive film dissolves at 0.9 VSHE. Elemental sulfur is one of the products of chalcopyrite dissolution above 1.0 VSHE. Cathodic reactions within the potential region of 0.1 to 0.6 VSHE and anodic reactions at potentials lower that 0.5 VSHE are associated with at least one soluble species from solution. The soluble species involved in the cathodic reactions are likely ferric and cupric, while the soluble species involved in the anodic reactions is likely H2Saq."
