The timber township of Powelltown, Victoria lies N.E. of Yarra Junction, 60 miles east of Melbourne and in the site of the mill of the Victorian Hardwood Company Proprietary Ltd.A lift gauge railway owned by the company connects Yarra Junction on the Warburton line, with the township through two or three smaller mill centres on the way.The company has been operating for some 12 years. In the divide, about four miles from Powelltown, between the Little Yarra and Latrobe rivers, cutting was continued with material being handled by winch and double incline haulage over the divide. A small bush locomotive dealt with the traffic between the divide and the cutting site.In order to reduce costs, which were heavy at the haulage, the company decided to make a continuous railway from Powelltown to the bush by means of a tunnel through the divide.Hand bore holes were put down on the proposed line of tunnel and showed that the divide at this point consisted of decomposed depth of about 100 ft. towards the eastern or Latrobe side - and that the undecomposed granite summit lay to the west of the surface summit.The bores also served to locate the underground water line, this was afterwards found to rise and fall with wet and weather.To avoid tunnelling in hard and heavy water, the grading of the was laid out with the summit of the hard granite the point in the line.

Esso-BHP have installed a production supervisory control system that is presently controlling the offshore oil and gas facilities on the Barracouta and Marlin platforms from an onshore master station. This control is achieved with a computerized master station onshore which uses a UHF radio system for telemetry and control.The system is designed to control, monitor, and gather data from a large number of oil and gas production platforms and has flexibility to handle future variations in operating conditions.The system will be extended to the Halibut platform late in 1970 and to the Kirlgfish platforms during 1971.

This is what I term ... the graveyard end of any Conference. It's almost over. Those of you remaining are either all talked out or past the information overload stage. And some of the sensible? ones have left for more exciting field trips, or gone back to their work-site where they earn their daily crust, or headed off South to another Conference of interest to the Energy sector that is being held currently in Christchurch. But that's OK. I have a thick skin! And neither am I particularly Politically Correct! I am not a miner: I am not involved in the mining industry in a hands on way at all. I am not even an academic. I am not even too sure why I am here ... apart from the fact that I agreed to come! At various times in my life I have been a D istrict Councillor, Chairman of a Regional Council and even an MP. I am a supporter of responsible mining.  All of what I have to say is my own point of view rather than that of either the Coal Producers' Federation or the mining industry. That is not to say that we are often in agreement, but I thought I would clear that point right at the outset. And some of what I will talk about will not strictly be to the topic - it's hardly mind-bending riveting stuff. Well, is it? But obviously because you are still here you have some interest in the topic.

A significant amount of metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from iron ore pellets. To control the quality of pellets and to optimise pellet production, characterisation of both green and fired pellets is required. Optical image analysis (OIA) allows identification of different minerals, binder, remaining fluxes and porosity within pellets.For proper identification of the mineralogy, porosity and texture in pellets a high magnification is required, therefore each individual image covers only a very small portion of the pellet. At the same time the characterisation of pellets requires that the whole pellet is represented as a single object, so the size of the resulting overall image at high magnification can make it difficult to handle. A solution to this problem has been implemented within the CSIRO OIA package Mineral4 by combining images at different levels. Namely, to average out local irregularities, individual frames can be stitched during imaging into larger MosaiX images. Mineral4 further combines these MosaiX images into a single panorama image of the whole pellet.The proposed procedures allow the calculation of mineral and porosity spatial distributions, local gradients and abundance graphs based on the distance from the centre of the pellet. The principal source of funding the working capital requirements of gold miners has traditionally been equity. However in the 1980s, with a substantial increase in activity in the exploration for, and the production of, gold the traditional sources of equity finance became no longer sufficient to meet demand. With the often high cost of raising equity, the need for developing alternative financing structures became critical, especially since the stockmarket crash of 1987 which at least until recently, adversely affected the amount of equity capital available for investment in mining.

THE most important part of the routine survey work on a mine is the keeping up-to-date of plans and sections showing progress of stoping and development work, and the direction of the latter for the purpose of making necessary connections. Except in specialcircumstances, e.g., major horizoittal development, the exactitude required in this work is not extreme, and a method of survey in keeping with the demands of the work itself is all tbat is required.For example, no one would consider measuring the walls of a stope to a fraction of an inch; such extreme accuracy would be wasted.The stope walls being irregular, a mean is usually taken, and for ordinary purposes a survey with a limiting error of six inches is quite satisfactory for the purpose of plotting either stoping or development.It is the author's aim in this paper to describe the method in use at the North Broken Hill Oompany's British mine. This method, while being sufficiently accurate for the purpose in view, possesses the very great advantages of speed and simplicity of operation,with a minimum of necessary equipment. This latter is a very important item where several surveys on different levels have to be carried out on the one day.Let it be understood, however, that the use of this method does not dispense with the theodolite, but simply serves as a convenient adjunct to obtain details and to extend the accurate theodolite survey up rises and down winzes, and through ladderways orwinzes into stopes, where the use of a theodolite, if not actually impossible, is often exceedingly inconvenient. Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. Various influences determine how an Environmental Management System (EMS) for a mining or petroleum project is developed and administered. These influences include the environmental and resource legislation applying to the project, the culture of the organisation, the environmental sensitivity of the area, and the administrative policies of the regulatory agencies involved. While financial penalties and even imprisonment may be imposed for non-compliance with environmental legislation, there are other compelling reasons for the establishment of an effective EMS. If a company wishes to be considered by Governments for the grant of exploration or mining rights, it is important that it can demonstrate environmentally responsible operations at existing facilities. The development of an effective EMS requires commitment from the Board of the company and the issue of an Environmental Policy to empower all levels of the staff and workforce to achieve environmentally responsible operations. This must be supported by the provision of appropriate human and financial resources, and environmental training of staff at all levels from the Board to the mine site, workshop and office. A regular environmental auditing programme is essential to ensure that the EMS is in place and is effective in achieving compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate policies and protection of the environment. An EMS can be developed on the basis of existing management systems, quality management systems, existing and emerging environmental management standards (such as BS7750 and ISOI4000), or sophisticated computerised systems which may incorporate international experience, standards, and codes of practice.

The Estonia Mine, operated by Eesti Energia Kaevandused AS (EEK), the mining division of the Estonian Government's energy company, Eesti Energia AS, is a large room and pillar mine located in Eastern Estonia. It supplied approximately 4.9 Mt/a of oil shale in financial year ending 2010, which is used for electricity and shale oil generation. Due to the Estonian climate and the power station's need for a dry product, Estonia Mine has developed a planning system where short-term demands of the power stations dictate the schedule. Such an arrangement requires maximising flexibility and consequently the mine only operated for 199 days in 2010.The footprint plays a key role in achieving mass mining rates as the 12 km + 12 km lease area allows the mine to split into mining districts that act independently of each other and maximise the number of work areas available. Coupled with this, the geology of the mine is relatively homogenous over the mining lease, simplifying the mine design and production methods.During the last five years, EEK has commissioned a comprehensive conveyor network. Consequently, material handling only requires loaders to dump oil shale direct from the production face onto a chain conveyor that feeds the conveyor network that ultimately supplies the enrichment plant. Dewatering is also of critical importance, with 90 Mm3 of water discharged annually. EEK uses large trenches up to 3.5 m deep and 1.2 m wide to channel groundwater. Track mounted mechanical saws are used to cut slots in the floor, to control overbreak in blasting these trenches.EEK has introduced Salzgitter Machinenbau GB 280S auger drills that drill three 280 mm diameter holes simultaneously. This has improved void hole drilling times and reduced the drilling required for each face, reducing the overall production cycle time. Blasting activities have also been decoupled from other mining activities negating the need for firing times through the use of small independent firings, required to control vibrations.

The Mount Angelo prospect outcrops as two copper rich gossans, the larger of which is 250 ft long and 70 ftwide. The mineralization is epigenetic and replaces part of a brecciated and disturbed lime tone and calcareou sediment sequence.Magnetic and self potential survey indicated a substantial body of sulphide mineralization, the top of which was approximately 100 ft below the surface.Diamond drilling confirmed this and established the presence of a mineral body of at least 500,000 tons, extending to a depth of 300 ft. Of the 500,000 tons, 200,000 ton are primary copper ore which a ays 2 per cent copper.This mineral body is not economic at present, but could become economic if copper mining is established elsewhere in the district...

Laboratory-Scale Magnetohydrostatic Separator for High Resolution Density Analysis of Plastic and Other Wastes Recycling and reuse of different plastic wastes is still a current problem to solve for process engineers and it is true for seeking industrial applications as well as for smaller laboratory-scale, where a given waste sample, plastic or even metallic, has to be precisely separated into narrow density fractions to gain data for industrial design or for scientific research. The principle of magnetohydrostatic separators are known even there are industrial size machines but our primary aim was the development of a laboratory-scale separator for analysis of particles of densities up to 6 kg/L and sizes up to 8 mm. Main parts of the built experimental equipment are the ferrite core with two high power coils. The shape of the ferrite core at the two sides of the separator channel was specially designed to produce isodynamic magnetic field. In these places the ferrite core was constructed from laser cut ferrite sheets. The development of the high power electric supply for the two coils was a real challenge because the high voltage and current (400 V, 30 A) and because it had to be precisely regulated for being able to set discrete relative forces on the particles. Two separator channels were made from transparent plastic. The magnetic fluid is circulated by a centrifugal pump, fresh feed is supplied by a vibrated feeder and products can be taken by built in samplers. The velocity profile in the separator channel is measured by an ultrasonic Doppler velocity meter. Paper reports about the development and itself of the magnetohydrostatic separator and about some fundamental and applied laboratory experiments with different reference particles and wastes from used cars and electrical appliances.

Since its inception in 1990, improved metallurgical processing technologies, coupled with mine planning enhancements and improved geological knowledge, have sequentially enabled better efficiencies and economies of scale at the Macraes Gold Project. Over a period of 11 years, processing enhancements have been achieved by: +        increasing mill throughput, from one million tonnes per year, to current throughput of 3.9 million tonnes per year; +        improving recovery rates, from 70 % to approx 84 %; and +        performance enhancement through innovation, eg the use of kerosene to combat ClL pregrobbing. Future processing improvements have been identified in optimising the ore feed and processing flowsheet. The introduction of the autoclave has transformed the process flow form a traditional 'mill headgrade and tonnes milled' operation, to a 'sulphur/gold ratio and sulphur tonnes oxidised' operation.

To many Australian Mining Engineers, we take it, the singular features of banket deposits are not as familiarly known as they would wish, possibly because in the majority of instances they are not in touch with the South African milling world, and have had little opportunity of studying the development of the banket beds, either from correspondence or literature. The writer hazards this opinion feelingly, because, when in Australia and before he had visited Africa, the utmost knowledge he was able to obtnin was a mass of conflicting theoretic discussion as to the agencies which formed the banket bed, without any practical hints as to their geological horizon, the rocks with which they are associated, the usual appearance and character of the ore, in fine, without that everyday detailed description which the miner requires when seeking information regarding mineral or metal deposit foreign in character to any that he has yet studied, or as yet had any opportunity of studying in his own country.The writer recognised that many more able men than he have from time to time discussed the features and formation of the banket beds of the land, notwithstanding which and feeling that many of his Australian colleagues have found themselves in a similar position regarding accurate detailed information respecting these African banket deposits as he himself was, he hopes that the present paper on the said deposits, as found on the fields under notice, will prove useful to some and of interest to all.

Reliable and discriminating small, laboratory scale methods of study have been developed and used successfully in the critical evaluation and interpretation of the carbonization characteristics of a wide range of raw and prepared materials, the variable factors in the coking process, and' the mechanical properties of the carbonized products. The simple and highly economic technologies have been successfully and effectively integrated with detailed surface and subsurface geological exploration programmes (particularly in the coalfields of the .Central Bowen Basin of Queensland) as well as with quality and utilization studies of a nUII!ber of representative Australian and Japanese coals. Previously, only the results of comparatively large, laboratory scale studies have provided information reasonably indicative of those to be anticipated hi industrial practice, but these suffer serious disadvantages in terms of economy of material, time and resources; they have been difficult or even impossible to use as an essential part of any normal or comprehensive exploration programme. On the other hand, although previously developed smaller scale laboratory methods derive considerable advantage from their flexibility, amenity to critical control and inherent potential for speed and economy, they have hitherto permitted no effective or direct comparison with the results of industrial practice or full scale assessment. Comprehensive study results achieved through technologies developed recently at the University 'of Sydney demonstrate that carefully controlled small laboratory scale methods of evaluation quite suitable for use in exploration and, other programmes may be used to predict with considerable accuracy and reliability (in some cases exceedingthat of pilot scale study) the principal strength index of one of the established and internationally recognized full sc:ale tests-the Japanese Industrial-Standard Drum Test. It is probable that further study may establish satisfactory correlations with the results of other standard industrial procedures.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an illustration of the Resource Management Act processes at their best. Many of you will be aware of the Martha Mine situated in the middle of Waihi Township in Hauraki District. Underground mining ceased on Martha Hill in the 1950s. A new mining licence was issued in the late 1980s and since that date open cast mining has continued at the site. The Hauraki District Council notified its proposed plan in October 1994. Prior to that date numerous discussion papers and draft sections of the plan had been disseminated in the community. Considerable consultation was undertaken with all interest groups. As an indication of the success of that consultation process only 17 references to the Environment Court were lodged following the making of decisions on submissions and further submissions. Those references, which included a number from the Minerals Industry, were all resolved by consent. Out of the reference and consent order process EMMA (Extended Martha Mineral Area) was born.

Ensuring that diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and non-metal mines are maintained below statutory limits is an essential requirement of mine ventilation systems. However, despite the cost of providing ventilation, air ventilation rates are usually based upon models, assumptions, or measurements integrated over long durations rather than actual need. Real-time measurement of DPM, interpreted in terms of mine activity schedules, can offer better ventilation management to keep DPM within regulated levels while controlling costs. This work presents data from three demonstration sites with in-mine applications of an environmental particulate sensor that measured black carbon (BC) as a surrogate for DPM.Aethalometers are a class of environmental monitors that measure the light absorbance of aerosol particles at several optical wavelengths. A model AE33 Aethalometer was operated in three separate mines for periods of two weeks, three months, and seven-plus months, and the data was reported in real time as a concentration of BC. Concentration of aromatic organic compounds, which can indicate other forms of combustion, was also reported. The data was used to:- measure the relative efficiency of a new scale-model DPM air scrubber- determine if ventilation could be reduced in a shotcrete loading facility without compromising air quality- evaluate diurnal and weekly DPM levels in a large-entry stone mine. Instrument data were displayed locally and stored for later downloading in all cases. In one mine, the instrument was connected to a local controller, and in another it was connected to the mine’s underground network so that DPM data was presented in real time to a display in the mine ventilation engineering office on the surface.The results showed that the air scrubber removes from 82 per cent to 95 per cent of the DPM; that DPM produced during shotcrete loading is only a minor part of overall DPM levels; and that wide variations in DPM levels exist in the limestone operation. The DPM monitor operated continuously for extended periods in these underground environments. The only maintenance required was the routine replacement of filter tape, typically on a two-week schedule. A sample diluter, which is currently being tested, could extend the intervals between filter changes.
