Separator performance is evaluated by the so-called separation efficiency. The concept of efficiency in mineral dressing operations must be interpreted with considerable care. Although qualitative use of term efficiency is valid and useful, difficulties arise in expressing it quantitatively because two conflicting criteria, grade and recovery are normally involved in its evaluation. It is undesirable to express efficiency as a single value, even though this is frequently done in practice, since there are strictly speaking an infinite number of combinations of grade and recovery that can give that one value. Inefficiencies in processes can be attributed to three broad sources: mineral limitations as represented by the separability curves, equipment limitations (which prevent the maximum separation indicated by the separability curves), and human failure to minimise these inefficiencies. In the present paper, the efficiency of a two-constituent separation process has been examined. The separation process has been evaluated by comparing the sharpness factor of the actual, the absolutely efficient and the absolutely inefficient operations.

The objective, of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP)-sponsored project at IncoÆs Stobie mine, was to conduct a long-term field evaluation of selected diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, available to the underground mining industry. Nine state-of-the-art DPF systems were retrofitted to heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles and were subjected to extensive long-term in-mine evaluation. Periodic efficiency tests were conducted at various stages of the study (in 2001, 2002 and 2004) to establish in-use efficiencies and durabilities of the tested DPF systems. During efficiency tests, the vehicles/engines were operated over several steady-state operating conditions. Various instruments were used to measure particulate and gaseous emissions upstream and downstream of the filter systems. The results were used to assess the effects of the filter systems on the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide in the vehicle exhaust. Experience with the operational issues related to deployment of the filter systems on underground mining vehicles, coupled with the assessment of the filtration efficiencies, were the primary objectives of the study. The variety of filtration systems and regeneration concepts used in this study offered the opportunity to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the various types. Some of the major issues studied were criteria for selecting the filter media, means of regeneration, the long-term operational reliability, and the occurrence of unwanted secondary emissions.

Resource estimates are the corner stone of technical and investment decision-making. Prior to mining, resource estimation uncertainty has the greatest potential to lead to poor investment decisions, despite a significant component of resource estimation uncertainty being unknowable at this critical stage in the mining cycle. This presents a conundrum to the resource geologist in terms of risk evaluation and resource classification. Ahead of mining, there is normally considerable focus on drill hole spacing analysis to determine the ‘optimal’ drill hole spacing, taking grade and geological continuity into account; cost-benefit analyses balance improved resource definition against cost; the law of diminishing returns and the exponential cost increases acting together as spacing is reduced. Typically, a lower limit to the drill hole spacing is identified. After completing the resource drilling to an agreed spacing, resource estimation is then undertaken. At this point it is common to attempt to bracket the resource estimation uncertainty. In many cases conditional simulation is used, based on a modelled, but largely assumed, variogram model. It is also assumed that the histogram of the available drill hole sample data is representative of the in-ground mineralisation. The purpose of this paper is not to diminish the importance of drill hole spacing and simulation studies, but rather to illuminate an important aspect of estimation uncertainty that, although previously recognised, is typically overlooked – the question of how representative the available data set is in characterising the true (but unknown) distribution of mineralisation. To do this, we lift the lid on one of OceanaGold’s former operations, the mined-out Globe Progress Mine, by resurrecting a high quality, close-spaced, reverse circulation (RC) grade control data set. The Globe Progress Mine is within the West Coast Region of New Zealand, it was closed and transitioned to rehabilitation in 2016 and is now known as the Reefton Restoration Project. The exhaustive Globe Progress grade control data was used to repeatedly ‘redrill’ the deposit by extracting 35 m × 35 m spaced subsets from the original 5 m × 5 m spaced grade control data. Utilising closely spaced grade control data removed the need for assumptions regarding short range continuity, which are necessary with forward-looking analyses that are based upon broader spaced resource drilling. The extraction process used a nearest neighbourhood algorithm, repeatedly moving the origin in 5 mE, or 5 mN increments. Individual resource estimates were then completed for each of the extracted drill hole data sets (49 in total) as well as a grade control estimate based upon the exhaustive data set. Whilst the data unpinning each of the 49 estimates changed, the geological assumptions, variography, and modelling parameters remained constant. This approach was taken to isolate the impact of changing the input data. The 49 estimates were then compared against each other and the grade control estimate. The mean of all 49 sensitivity estimates was close to that of the grade control estimate in terms of contained gold, tonnes and grade. Whilst it is acknowledged that the grade control estimate itself is subject to some degree of estimation uncertainty, the close match between the average of the 49 estimates and the grade control estimate suggests that the resource estimation methodology is reasonable and appropriate. Whilst this comparison is important, the focus of this study is on the component of estimation uncertainty related to the underlying data, and this is reflected in the spread across the estimates. The spread across the 49 global estimates (highest to lowest) for this particular Mineral Resource Estimation Conference 2023 | Perth, Australia | 24–25 May 2023 142 case study was found to be significant (approximately 20 per cent in grade and metal) and that is attributable solely to the underlying data. This exercise quantifies a component of the estimation uncertainty that is inherent to all drill hole data and is distinct from the uncertainties associated with modelling methodology choices, sample and subsample quality and drill hole spacing-related interpolation uncertainty. Importantly, this uncertainty is unknowable prior to mining; we can only directly compare the resource drill hole data against grade control data after mining has taken place. For the case study, approximately 65 per cent of the estimates fell within 5 per cent of the grade control estimate for contained-gold, suggesting that for many projects the histogram of drill hole data is unlikely to differ noticeably from that of the in-ground resource. However, about 15 per cent of the estimates in this study differed by more than 7.5 per cent, suggesting that a not-insignificant proportion of estimates will be materially compromised. Whether or not the available drill hole data is representative comes down to the ‘luck of the draw’ and cannot be known at the time of resource estimation. Given the challenge of attempting to evaluate forward-looking estimation uncertainty, a component of which that can only be quantified retrospectively, what should we do as resource geologists? What are the implications for risk evaluation, resource classification and reconciliation? Furthermore, without rigorous post-mining data checks, resource geologists may conflate suboptimal modelling with the shortcomings of the underlying data. An example of this problem is discussed in the following section.

Mining remains one of the key industries in Australia and many other countries with mineral wealth. In Australia, mining contributes 8.8 per cent to the countryÆs gross domestic product (McKay et al, 2000). In Queensland alone, mineral and petroleum industries contribute approximately $9.4 billion to the StatesÆ gross state product (2001/02) (Young, 2003). Increasing pressure on mining companies to perform in a global marketing environment requires mine management to consider more innovative ways to manage their resources û human, plant and equipment û which includes the gathering and analysis of operations data and information for improved decision making. For any mining operation utilising rubber tyred equipment such as trucks, front-end loaders and ancillary equipment, annual expenditure on tyres and related items can be significant. Even a small reduction in tyre operating costs can have a real effect on the business bottom line performance in the short term. Tyre Application Risk Management (TYREARMÖ) can provide substantial benefits in the long term across a number of KPIs not just through reduction in direct tyre expenditure but through flow-on improvements in safety, productivity and reduced environmental impacts. Several accidents involving tyres have also highlighted an increased need to consider the hazards and resultant risks arising from operations of rubber tyred mining fleets (Torlach and Johnston, 1990). This paper presents the process and results of achieving sustained safety and business improvement through the strategic alliance between an earthmover tyre management service provider, Klinge and Co (Klinge) and a BHP Billiton coal mine. The accompanying case study demonstrates in some detail the overall methodology, and the tools and technologies used where active management of data, its analysis and decisions taken have resulted in a 43 per cent improvement in tyre cost performance and a corresponding reduction in tyre-related downtime since the beginning of the alliance.

The Tregoora Gold Project is centred around the old Mitchell River Antimony Field located 100 kilometres west-northwest of Cairns, North Queensland. The project is currently the subject of a joint venture between Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. and Hawk Investments Limited.Historical BackgroundThe Tregoora area was first prospected for antimony and gold around 1890. During the periods 1905 to 1914 and 1937 and 1944 approximately 100 tonnes of antimony and an unknown quantity of gold were won from a number of small mines the principal one being the "Retina". A strong increase in the demand for antimony in the early 1970's resulted in renewed exploration activity in the region and the re-development of the Retina Mine. Despite the intermittent interest in the region for antimony it was not until 1984 that the potential of the area for hosting gold resources was realised with the delineation by Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. of a significant gold deposit now referred to as the Black Knight.

Block caving is the most economic underground methods for excavating massive orebodies, due to the high productivity and low production costs. The success of block caving operations depends on the fragmentation and draw control as large blocks decrease the equipment efficiency, inhibit the material flow and may lead to expensive secondary blasting. Even though ore handling system design, as well as overall economic results, both critically rely on secondary fragmentation, this parameter continues to be one of the least understood issues in the caving operations.This research focuses on the experimental study of secondary fragmentation, considering the impact of vertical pressures and material flow. Experiments using a load-haul-dump extraction system were conducted under laboratory conditions to quantify the influence of pressure and particle size on secondary fragmentation. Results demonstrate that increasing the vertical pressure (simulating deeper conditions) leads to higher fragmentation (smaller particle size) and greater fines generation during draw. The experimental results were applied to calibrate the developed mathematical model based on kinetic matrix. The acceptable accordance between the comminution model results and the reality showed that this method is convenient in predicting the secondary fragmentation in block caving.CITATION:Castro, R, Gómez, R, Casali, A and Hekmat, A, 2016. How do you portray a large structurally and stratigraphically complex deposit to return a meaningful resource estimation, and produce a geological model that is useable for planning on a daily basis? The George Fisher Mine is located 22 km north of Mount Isa and forms part of XstrataÆs Zinc Group operations. It is currently a major producer of zinc, lead and silver in the region with an estimated total resource for all categories of 127 Mt at 100g/t Ag, 5.3 per cent Pb and 9.2 per cent Zn (June 2005). Production in 2005 totalled 2 647 492 wet tonnes for 317 699 kg Ag, 140 317 tonnes Pb and 230 331 tonnes Zn from underground operations. George Fisher (GF) consists of two deposits that are structurally complex on a mine scale, George Fisher North (GFN) and George Fisher South (GFS). Regional faulting has resulted in a 2 km long package of variably pyritic shale and siltstone that separates the deposits. This paper looks specifically at GFN. Distinct correlations exist between the two deposits based on stratigraphic matches; however, orebody characteristics, geometry and fault architectures differ significantly between the two. The deposits consist of multiple, sedimentary-hosted, stratiform orebodies from 2 to 25 m wide, separated by waste intervals of variable width. Each ore-waste interval is modelled as an individual geological domain. Structurally, George Fisher North (GFN) contains a series of major late-stage NE faults with dextral offset(s) of up to 130 m. Further complexity is added by NS, NW and NNE striking fault orientations that can produce either a loss or repeat of stratigraphy, local drag folding, orebody attenuation and block rotation. Due to this structural complexity and orebody offsets, domains at GFN are further divided into fault blocks (FB). The GFN model comprises eight FBs over a strike length of 1 km, all of which are modelled independently. As drilling progresses and additional resources are converted, further FBs will be added at major fault offsets to accommodate orebody and model expansion. This will be in addition to what is already a large and time-consuming data set to manage and update. For example, each FB has 18 domains each with two constraining wireframes (hanging wall and footwall). Each wireframe has several sets of point data depending on the type of data available, ie diamond drilling, mapping or interpretation points. This equates to over 1100 separate files to manage. Additional wireframes and files are also required for major structures, daily planning requirements and block model runs. In total some 1500 files are managed, updated and maintained for GFN alone. The ongoing need to expand as a business and optimise production in the current economic climate where there is a global demand for metal has led to an increase in production at GF. This has resulted in a rapidly growing data set and highlights the importance of practical and efficient modelling to achieve a meaningful resource estimate. This paper focuses on the geological modelling, modelling approaches and techniques employed for the GFN deposit.

At Tropicana gold mine (TGM), mine planning is completed from ‘one source of truth’ known as the Integrated Planning Model (IPM). The IPM is a block model which forms a core component of the TGM Mine Planning System – used for short, medium and long-term mine planning cycles, and for Mine to Mill reconciliation.The IPM was developed from a desire to consolidate long-term information contained in mineral resource and ore reserve models, with short-term information from the grade control processes, including grade control models and ore polygons.The IPM is informed initially by resource models, upon which the longer term budget and schedules are based. The IPM is routinely updated with grade control models and ore design information, providing increased confidence for short to medium term mine planning. In this format, the IPM also provides a framework for reconciliation of resource performance with grade control, mining actuals and mining schedules, and ultimately milling. As well as a means for analysing past performance through reconciliation, it has proven its worth as a predictor of variation and an input to successful schedule sequencing and change management. The IPM is a critical component of the TGM Mine Planning System, providing a centralised framework for short interval mill feed prediction through to life-of-mine (LOM) planning.Current development of the IPM is working towards incorporating Mine to Mill optimisation and real-time material tracking projects at TGM. If successful, the model will provide a truly powerful mine planning data source. Current development outlines a mechanism for tracking material from Mine to Mill, and for transferring mill performance data back to the IPM. Increasingly advanced material classification and mine planning, incorporating the multiple geometallurgical variables, will enable the mine to provide consistent mill feed products and result in a steady state and optimised mill.This paper outlines the vision, creation and benefits of the IPM at TGM. Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. Hydrometallurgy has a history of over 300 years with copper leaching and cementation having been exploited in Spain as far back as 1670. Since then, hydrometallurgy has become an integral, expanding branch of extractive metallurgy. This paper reviews major developments in hydrometallurgy over the past century with emphasis on recent commercial developments and their impact on the mining and metals industries. The environment in which these developments has taken place has changed significantly in the past two decades and many factors, often non-technical, have emerged as constraints on the operation of existing plants and the expansion and development of new hydrometallurgical operations. Finally, a number of possible new developments that will shape the future of hydrometallurgy in the new millennium are discussed, particularly as they relate to the assimilation of technical advances in other areas of science and engineering. The impact of current trends in the education of hydrometallurgists and the provision of research in support of these future developments is also addressed.

Many deposits have been evaluated as potential block caves over the last 20 years due to the perceived benefit of low operating costs. However, block cave projects are typically capital intensive, with mass mining providing high throughput rates that required large investments in mining, processing and utilities infrastructure. While the key economic metrics in deciding to proceed with a caving project are typically net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return, these may not represent the best decision metrics for some companies. Where a caving project is competing for scarce capital amongst other projects in a company’s portfolio or where the caving project is the only project being evaluated by a company trying to raise capital, other metrics may be more appropriate. This paper explores the use of present value ratio and the minimising of maximum negative cash flow as suitable metrics in determining alternative strategies. Trade-offs between optimising for economic value and capital efficiency measures allow for decision-makers to evaluate potentially higher-risk, higher-capital and maximum NPV projects against lower-risk, lower-capital projects.CITATION:Stewart, C A and Butcher, R J, 2016. In a ætypicalÆ gold deposit each tonne of ore will contain tens of millions of very fine gold particles, whereas; at Bendigo the majority of gold in each tonne of ore is present in just five to 15 very coarse gold particles, a distribution more akin to diamond deposits. At Bendigo the minimum sample size required for good assay repeatability is estimated at 4.5 t for each assay. Drill core samples are several orders of magnitude too small to generate representative assays.The drilling data are characterised by a nugget effect approaching 90 per cent, a very skewed distribution and, on average, under-report in situ grade by 50 per cent to 75 per cent. Since 2002 Bendigo Mining NL has completed 47 000 m of diamond drilling, 1200 m of on reef development, collected and processed 100 bulk samples (150 t each), 800 mini bulk samples (50 kg each) and processed in excess of 25 000 t of ore through a pilot plant. The results of this work have provided the information required to develop and verify a robust grade estimation procedure. No standard geostatistical manipulation of the drilling assay data can generate an accurate grade estimate as the samples and associated assays are not representative of the ore being sampled. The recognition of this fact was critical as a radical transformation of the raw drill assay data was required to develop a workable methodology for grade estimation in such a high nugget environment. The aim of the transformation was to reduce the nugget effect and high variance and so approach a lognormal assay distribution. Ideally the average drill grade would approximate actual in situ grade and the assay distribution would reflect actual grade distribution within the reefs. Following the data transformation simple block modeling within the defined resources allows grade estimates to be made that can be used in the estimation of Indicated Resources and hence Probable Reserves. The grade estimates have been checked by extensive bulk sampling and processing of 25 000 t of ore (three per cent of total resource) through a pilot plant with planned full scale mining to provide the ultimate verification.

The recycling of metals can be very efficient with careful selection of the material being recycled. The volume and value of recycled ferrous scrap has lead to the development of steel mini-mills which in turn has caused major changes to the steel industry. Although much smaller in volume, the recycling of lead is very significant, with battery recycling accounting for 60 per cent of annual world production. This high recycle rate can be attributed to the relatively uniform feed-stock from lead-acid batteries. The recycling rates of other metals are considerably lower due to longer use and non-uniform product usage that results in less efficient segregation and processing. It is clear that recycling of metals has advantages but its sustainability is uncertain. What are the key benefits of metal recycling? Metal recycling has technical, economic and social impacts. It is relatively easy to assess recycling on a technical basis, but the social impacts are harder to evaluate. This paper examines some of the issues in evaluating the sustainability of metal recycling.

SustainabilityÆs imperative of economic development in tandem with social advancement and environmental protection is widely accepted, but much debate remains about the practical implications for the minerals processing technologies and practices for the future. Experience in other industry sectors however suggests that sustainability can be a value-adding framework for innovation in processing technologies, business models and management systems. This position paper explores how sustainability can drive innovation in minerals processing, by reviewing pertinent ideas and experiences gained in non-minerals sectors. Sustainable innovations can generally be broadly ranked from incremental to transformative, with each category having its own typical improvement potential, timescale and technological and operational challenges. This leads to a æmud mapÆ for sustainable innovation in minerals processing with three distinct tracks: eco-efficient operations; sustainable plant design and sustainable processing. Competing models for the sustainable innovation process through either forecasting or back-casting, have in common the strong reliance on vision, perspective and competency, which in turn highlights the importance of sustainability frameworks. Such sustainability frameworks provide normative goals and option elicitation prompts to assist with the analysis of current processes and scoping of more sustainable alternatives. A comparative analysis of five prominent environmental sustainability frameworks revealed three cross cutting sustainability themes that challenge current resource processing technologies and practices. These are: fate of materials (zero dissipation of materials); compatibility of materials and processes; and materials intensity of industrial products and processes. Although the sustainability concepts presented in this paper have not been extensively road tested in the minerals processing industry, there is ample evidence that recent initiatives in the Australian resource sector illustrate the applicability of the proposed framework. It is therefore argued that more in-depth assessment of sustainable innovation concepts would be a valuable contribution to the sustainable resource processing theory and practice.

On-belt analysers have been used since the early 1980s in the coal sector to measure ash content in real time for diverting material on conveyors to remove waste, bypass beneficiation and allow suitable material to proceed to the wash plant for processing. Since 2008, a GEOSCAN-M elemental analyser has been used on an overland conveyor in South Africa to divert direct-shipping quality iron ore to bypass a jig plant. This paper focusses on recent evaluation work to determine the suitability of an on-belt analyser to upgrade the processing plant feed in a copper-gold operation.Copper-gold ore samples from New Gold’s New Afton Mine near Kamloops, BC, Canada were tested to assess measurement accuracy over short time increments. A two-minute measurement increment has been used in the minerals sector as a compromise between good measurement accuracy and a useful tonnage (haul truck equivalent size or smaller). At New Afton, this increment represents approximately 35 t of material. Segregation decisions are currently made after visual and sometimes analytical determination, at increments of approximately 500 t to designate material as ore or waste at the drawbell in the cave.Results of test work including the composition range and expected accuracies by element are shown. The operation, which is not mine constrained, was evaluating the potential for ore upgrading through waste and low grade increment diversion to upgrade ore quality feeding the mill. Prompt-gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) was considered as the company recognised that it would measure through the full conveyed cross section continuously and produce multi-elemental measurements unaffected by particle size, dust, moisture content, layering and segregation, mineralogy and belt speed.GEOSCAN analyses over various analysis periods will be collected to identify variability in the conveyed material quality and used to generate tonnage-grade curves so that an optimal diversion (bulk sorting) tonnage increment can be determined. The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. Implementation of a well planned and executed Management Operating System (MOS) can result in widespread improvements to operational performance but its success relies heavily on the investment by and engagement of the larger workforce with the project. Over the seven month period of the Telfer MOS project, significant improvements were achieved; a 20% increase in monthly hoisted tonnes from the open stope and sublevel cave operations and a 45% increase in square metres of ore extracted from the narrow vein operation. The Telfer MOS was undertaken with the intention that the project wasn’t solely about producing new tools, it hinged on the investment and behaviours of the personnel affected by these tools and alterations. To ensure that the project ran smoothly, the Byrnecut senior leadership team and their operators were heavily involved in the project’s development. In the initial stage, Telfer’s MOS project determined that the quality and accuracy of the information received in the form of radio calls to mine control and completed operator plods was questionable. This required an overhaul of the data collection and verification process in the form of altered operator plods, which was then cross referenced with the operator’s radio calls to mine control. Once the data collection and verification process was implemented, the Telfer team was then able to produce several tools with the aim of providing visibility to the data being captured and its implications. These tools allowed the mine foremen to determine whether equipment was being under-utilised and where they should focus their production efforts to meet monthly targets. Whilst the initial underground project is now complete, the implementation of MOS across the entire site is ongoing with significant operating improvements occurring.

It is well understood that designers and constructors must protect the existing surroundings of tunnel construction, particularly in the selection of excavation methods, ground support and waterproofing systems. However, while this can readily address the existing conditions, the tunnel owner and the designers need to consider the changes that are likely to occur during the life of the tunnel. It is typical for transport infrastructure to have a design life of at least a century. While the effects of constructing the tunnel on its surroundings are a short-term effect, the converse case, the protection of the tunnel, and the need to maintain its integrity, will affect developments over and adjacent to the tunnels beyond the foreseeable future. Decisions made during the design phase have the potential either to facilitate development or to hinder it for the long term.Examples principally from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong show that the provision for future development is addressed in different ways. These have ranged from making no specific provision, putting the onus onto developers to ensure that the tunnels are not affected adversely, to including a loading allowance for future development in the performance specification or contract documents for a tunnel project.These two contrasting approaches have strong points and risks. A highly prescriptive definition of permissible loadings around the tunnel can provide unambiguous guidance for the approving authority and the developer, but runs the risk of being overly conservative to allow for all the envisaged works, while still missing a detrimental combination of effects that theoretically complies with the specified requirements. In contrast, a general requirement to not cause detriment is open to interpretation and potentially difficult negotiations to reach agreement between the tunnel owner/operator and developer and finally the appointed contractor (probably with no contractual relationship with the tunnel owner).In practice, a combination of prescriptive and performance requirements is likely to provide the optimum combination of clarity and flexibility. Steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) is increasingly being used as ground support in both civil and mining applications. In recent years, methods of assessing the performance of SFRS have been developed. These include the beam test such as that prescribed by ASTM C-1018 and the panel test prescribed in the EFNARC European Shotcreting Standard. The panel test has gained popularity in recent times due to the two-way action modelled in the test. However, some difficulties have been noticed. Shear failures sometimes occur and there appears to be a rather high degree of variability in the panel test results. A new method of testing panels has been proposed. A circular panel supported on three symmetrically arranged points has been assessed at the University of Western Sydney. This paper describes the new test which may be the basis of a new specification for the testing of toughness of SFRS and summarises research work which has been carried out to-date.

Among the problems of the flotation of sulphides by the thiol collectors is the dependence and varieties of the flotation starting with the time and oxygen contents in the slurry. For sulphides, the flotation stage follows after the electrocatalytic oxidation of the collector with oxygen on the surface of the conductor minerals. The necessity of the oxygen for sulphide flotation (Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957) is in accordance with a corrosion model of a collector surface sorption (Salamy and Nixon, 1954). As Golikov and Nagimyak (1961) showed, the sulphides possess catalytic activity which provides the autoxidation of the xanthates in the sluny to the dixanthogen. This stage can be rather protracted, which limits the speed of the total process. Disulphides constitute important collectors for the sulphide flotation and the optimal degree of the xanthate oxidation is about 20 per cent for different ores (Abramov, 1978) or, following Chanturiya and Nazarova (1977) the surface compositions for various sulphide ores are different and an optimal oxidation degree is variable from five to 25 per cent according to the ore nature. The optimisation of the surface composition is possible by application of the dixanthogens, or by a partial chemical, electrochemical, or catalytic oxidation of xanthates (Desains, 1847; Schall, 1896; Vigdergauz, 1989). According to Rand (1977) and Vigdergauz (1991) sulphides possess different catalytic activities for oxygen electroreduction. In neutral solutions, for example, the following decrease in the order: FeS2 (Fe,Ni)9S8 CuFeS2 FeS; Cu5FeS4 Cu2S; PbS (Vigdergauz, 1991). For the cases of low catalytic activities of the sulphides, the preflotation oxidation of xanthate could be useful to optimise the process kinetics.
