The demands of the economy require larger manufacturing facilities using greater quantit- ies of raw materials which must be mined, handl- ed, stockpiled and recovered with efficiency and dependability. All over the world, mining com- panies, steel manufacturers, power stations and process plants are not only seeking but finding methods of increasing outputs and'reducing costs in the field of materials handling. In mining bigger continuous mining machines and shovels, larger trucks and crushers are digging and processing greater quantities of differing materials which have to be handled and shipped at rates once thought to be impossible. To implement such schemes demands the blending of a lot of diverse-equipment, mining machinery, bins, feeders, reclaimers and it is here that the belt conveyor assumes a role of ever increas- ing importance. Significant developments have taken place in the seventies with respect to conveyor belt transportation; not only in the systems but also in the components which combine to make such systems work efficiently.

In epithennal deposits changes in the character of mineralization in depth and time are conspicuous and abrupt at the interface between supergene and hypogene zones. As the reaction zone migrates downward as a consequence of surface erosion, previously deposited minerals are placed in unstable chemical enviromments and dissolved. This reaction takes place at the base of the epithermal precious metal zone. Examples at Cerro de Pasco, and Casapalca, Peru; Carlin, Nevada; and porphyry copper-gold deposits are cited.

The Northparkes copper-gold project is being developed in Central Western New South Wales approximately 30 km NNW of the town of Parkes and approximately 350 km west of Newcastle. The project is a joint venture between North Limited (80 per cent) and the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent). North is the manager. The basis of the project is three copper-gold orebodies, the northern two of which are being mined by conventional open cut methods with the third and largest orebody at the southern end of the lease to be mined by block caving. A fourth mineralised body has been identified in the centre of the lease. While further evaluation of this deposit is required it would appear to be amenable to block caving. Oxide caps of gold ore and copper-gold ore over-lie the two northern orebodies. Development commenced with the construction of a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant to treat the oxide gold ore. Construction of a flotation plant to treat oxide copper-gold ore and sulphide copper-gold ore is underway. When full-scale operation is achieved late in 1996 the plant will treat 5.0 million tonnes of ore per year of which 1.1 million tonnes will be open cut ore and 3.9 million tonnes will be block cave ore. In terms of annual ore tonnage the underground mine will be the largest metalliferous mine in New South Wales and the second largest in Australia.

Orebodies constitute naturally occurring, commonly highly variable concentrations of minerals in the earth’s crust formed through varying and highly unpredictable processes. Orebody knowledge is a core foundation of a mining company’s asset base underpinning all decisions about Mineral Resource and Ore Reserves, future production, development and ultimately the profitability and competitiveness of a mining enterprise. The decision to invest in a mineral project is usually based upon a techno-economic evaluation of the project and having clear approval pathways to gain local community support and address social and environmental impacts. The main objective of the techno-economic evaluation is to determine the optimum development sequence for the particular orebody in question and to estimate the economic viability of the project and the future return on investment to its stakeholders, balancing the inherent value of the mineral in the ground against the costs of development and market pricing. With the exception of market-driven commodity prices, virtually all revenue and cost estimates fundamentally stem from the understanding and subsequent modelling of the orebody. A reliable estimate of the ore deposit grade and other geological value-drivers is the foundation upon which the business case for future mine development and operation is intricately dependent. Orebody knowledge is, therefore, the fundamental driver of the mineral project cycle, influencing the progression of studies and consequently, the resource company’s ability to declare Exploration Results, Mineral Resources or Ore Reserves which govern the source and cost of funding available to the project. Drilling provides a ‘vector’ to the true nature of the orebody and effectively buys time to manage the technical risk associated with the orebody. Despite its perceived high cost, in both time and money terms, drilling is the only available technology for acquiring the necessary orebody knowledge to support technical and economic studies and to minimise orebody-driven cash flow uncertainty and volatility. However, like all costs, pressure to minimise drilling budgets is ubiquitous across the minerals industry. Paired with inappropriate key performance indicators, drilling is often regarded as a cost to be minimised, rather than an investment to be optimised. Furthermore, as future deposits get deeper and more complex, the collection of orebody knowledge is increasingly on the critical path for project development. The increasing cost of data collection pertaining to these deposits increases the temptation to minimise orebody knowledge gathering at the cost of long-term value as the reduction or postponement of drilling results in greater orebody knowledge risk at all stages of the value chain. Indeed the true cost of the decision to drill less is rarely known until the mine is in operation, well after the mine project evaluation team has moved on. This paper aims to promote orebody knowledge as the fundamental source of endogenous project financial risk and, consequently, its critical importance in project financial evaluation. Furthermore, the report documents experimental research into the development of an econometric model for valuing orebody knowledge. Using the density of drilling data as a proxy measure of orebody knowledge, the proposed approach integrates well-established stochastic grade modelling techniques with the mathematical mechanics of Decoupled Net Present Value (DNPV) which, combined with stochastic grade modelling (conditional simulation), lends itself to the financial International Mining Geology Conference 2022 | Brisbane, Australia and Online | 22–23 March 2022 3 assessment of orebody knowledge risk. The ongoing need for improved fuel economy, longer engine life, reduced emissions and greater power output has driven the need for lower charge air temperatures. Cuamins will introduce a split loop, single water pump approach to low temperature aftercooling (LTA) in 1987 with the introduction of its 1492 kW (2000 BP) 16 cylinder K Series engine. The LTA system selection process considered performance, durability, fuel economy, and total engine installed cost. The split loop system selected takes full advantage of the engine cooling characteristics to provide optimum charge air temperatures at all speeds, loads and ambient temperatures. Computer simulations and engine tests were used to determine performance for each charge air cooling alternative. The split loop system chosen offers many advantages compared to the other alternative systems studied which included air-to-air and dual loop (two radiator, two water pump) systems.

Improved understanding of the variables that influence hydrocyclone performance is of increasing interest to the iron ore industry, where hydorcyclones are widely used to deslime fine ore. In many cases, the impact of particular variables is not quantified sufficiently well experimentally to ensure that industrial performance will match expectations. The current work focused on developing and implementing a systematic methodology to evaluate and compare the performance of four different hydrocyclones in a desliming application. A critical component of the project was the design and construction of a pilot-scale hydrocyclone rig using state of the art monitoring and sampling methods. A wide ranging test programme was conducted to quantify the effect on metallurgical performance of the key hydrocyclone variables such as pressure, feed density, vortex finder size, spigot size and hydrocyclone make/overall design. Details of the experimental approach are presented, along with a discussion of the sizing analysis methods used. Performance criteria were established to assess the four hydrocyclones. The effects of each major variable were quantified over a wide range of conditions. The results show that clear performance differentiation was achieved, enabling the selection of the optimum configuration. The results from this work demonstrate the benefit of objectively assessing the performance of nominally equivalent units in selecting an optimum configuration that best satisfies the performance criteria.

The effect of various methods of conditioning on subsequent flotation performance was reviewed, where complex interactions involving attrition, aggregation, dispersion and surface cleaning were discussed. The present study focussed on the influences of standard laboratory cell conditioning, ultrasonic dispersion and high intensity conditioning on copper mineral flotation characteristics. The effect of substituting demineralised water for the WMC plant water was also examined. It was found that higher copper concentrate grades were often obtained using demineralised water, however the use of high intensity conditioning in mill water gave the highest copper recovery and highest flotation rate constant. This process should be considered if copper grade and recovery in this section of the plant drops, especially if the drop is due to surface oxidation of the copper minerals. Other methods of conditioning (cell and ultrasonic techniques) improved the rate of copper flotation above that obtained in the virtual absence of conditioning, showing the importance of conditioning on subsequent flotation operations.

A detailed study on oil agglomeration of fine metal oxide particles is presented in this paper. The major content embraces several aspects which may possibly reflect the current trends in oil agglomeration such as the effect of chemical and physical parameters, the activation of target minerals and the deactivation of gangue particles, the mechanisim of bridging liquid and the kinetics of oil agglomeration process. Systems of ilmenite-feldspar, manganese dioxide - quartz were seperated successfully through oil agglomeration followed by decantation or flotation technique respectively. A triple mixture of vandium-bearing titanomagnetite ilmenite and feldspar was processed satisfactorily using a composite technology: oil agglomeration-decantation-magnetic concentration.

Ion exchange using strong base resins is a well established technology for the recovery and purification of uranium from sulfuric acid leach liquors. Production of uranium at the Beverley Mine in South Australia includes acidic in situ leaching, ion exchange and uranium precipitation. The salinity present in the groundwater results in a relatively high concentration of chloride in the leach liquor reporting to the ion exchange plant. The impact of chloride on the ion exchange process is discussed in this paper. The results presented show that an increased chloride concentration in the lixiviant solution feeding the ion exchange plant leads to increased uptake of chloride by the resin during the loading cycle. At the highest chloride concentration studied (7.5 g/L Cl) chloride took up to 60 per cent of the resin loading sites. The impact of the chloride can be summarised as follows: for a given uranium concentration in the lixiviant feed solution, the uranium loading decreased with increasing chloride concentration; a consequence of decreased uranium loading is an increase in the frequency of elution, with an associated increase in elution reagent costs; and for a given elution efficiency, the uranium concentration in the barrens is expected to increase with increasing chloride concentration.A few options were examined to counteract the impact of chloride: an increase in elution efficiency was targeted to reduce the amount of uranium returning to the loading circuit; increasing the pH improved uranium loading, but this was found to also increase iron extraction; and preliminary screening of alternative resins showed that the higher the theoretical ion exchange capacity of the strong base resin, the higher the uranium loading.Work is continuing on uranium recovery from saline leach liquors, specifically investigating the performance of alternative resins.

Costain Resources Limited operates two open cut coal mines in the Hunter Valley coalfields of New South Wales, Ravensworth Mine and Warkworth Mine. The location of the Ravensworth operation is shown in Figure 1. In the case of the Ravensworth Mine, Costain Australia is essentially a contract miner and is contracted to supply coal to Pacific Power (previously The Electricity Commission of New South Wales), on contracts won through a tender system. Due to the existing infrastructure and the lease area that associated with the contract, the mining strips at Ravensworth South have a maximum strike length of 1500 metres. This paper deals with the methods of scheduling used to overcome the challenge of mining the short strike length, multi-seam deposit at Ravensworth South.

In presenting size analysis data, one has the choice of various graphical techniques; each no doubt has been developed to highlight a particular aspect of the data. A frequency size distribution plot is used quite extensively to illustrate the importance of the finer size particles in iron ore granulation. However, the basis for such a plot is often not appreciated. As a result, cases of incorrect use can be cited. The aim of this paper is to extend the work of Alien (1981) and to provide, using examples and figures, a basic understanding of the implications of the various size distributions. A simplified method of presenting sizing data on a linear scale graph paper is presented and recommended. This involves a simple construction of a histogram of mass fraction versus particle size (in geometric progression).

Reconciliation at large iron ore operations is a complex and time- consuming process. Often the volume of data and the large range of different stakeholders makes the process almost impossible. Up until recently geologists and engineers at these operations would spend hours cutting and pasting data in and out of monster spreadsheets, diligently comparing how resource/reserve models, grade control and survey pick-ups compare to what was actually produced. In 2003 the Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa broke this cycle by implementing SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software. The implementation of a dedicated reconciliation system required a number of existing practices to be changed, with the involvement of stakeholders right across the mine. Data sources had to be clarified and validated, terminology had to be standardised, processes needed to be documented and some methodologies needed to be updated. This was a task that required significant effort by Kumba personnel so that the system could be successfully implemented. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Sishen. It is a story of an operation that evolved from using a number of fragmented reconciliation processes to using a unified automated system. This paper outlines the key estimates and measurements that are used for reconciliation, details the characteristics of an automated web-based information management system to facilitate the process and provides some insights about the benefits that have been gained though the use of a rigorous reconciliation process.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) schedule model is used for short- to medium-term planning and scheduling at the Fimiston Open Pit Mine (the Superpit). The model bridges the gap between grade control models, which are generated one to seven days prior to mining, and the annual Resource and Reserve model update that is used for budget and life-of-mine plans. The schedule model uses close-spaced grade control data (up to 20 000 m drilled each month) as well as resource definition drilling to estimate production volumes three to six months ahead of current mining. From this, a rolling 12 week mining and processing schedule is generated on a monthly basis. As the KCGM operation is mill and sulfur constrained, the schedule model needs to be an accurate predictor of ounces as well as tonnes, gold and sulfur grades. The process must also be time efficient in order to meet monthly planning and reporting deadlines. Due to the large amount of new data generated each month, model updates using conventional interpretation and estimation techniques have proven to be impractical and too time consuming. The distribution of a contaminant in a bulk mass greatly influences the effectiveness of sampling procedures. Most currently used sampling guidelines for genetically modified organisms (GMO) testing have stringent distribution requirements. Specifically, all these protocols are based upon the assumption that GM material, if present, is randomly distributed. Yet, assuming randomness is risky because the applied sampling plan may not provide an accurate estimate of the content of the contaminant. Despite the general consensus that an evaluation of the possibility of non-random distribution of GM materials within lots is a pre-requisite for the definition of effective sampling protocols, no experimental data on the distribution of GMOs in kernel lots are available anywhere in the world. Additionally, to date there is no distribution-free statistical model to estimate sampling errors, thus making the theoretical definition of optimal sampling technique impossible when randomness cannot be assumed. Here we present preliminary results of the KeLDA project, which is the first study investigating the distribution of GM materials in large soybean lots imported within the European Union. The extensive variability of GM content, observable both within and among soybean lots, indicates that heterogeneity issues cannot be overlooked when defining sampling strategies for large lots of particulate material and that randomness cannot be assumed a priori. A new statistical model free from any distribution assumptions, developed in order to estimate the sampling error associated with different sampling protocols together with the risk of false-negative results, is also presented. The new model, which is applicable to any consignment of particulate material with respect to any kind of contamination, presents two novelties: first, freedom from any distribution assumption; second, the possibility of estimating the magnitude of the sampling error associated with different sampling protocols as a function of specific distributional properties.

Scheelite was floated from a low-grade (0.28 per cent W03) calcitic (96.30 per cent CaCO3) scheelite ore using oleoyl sarcosine as collector and alkylated 8-hydroxyquinoline as modifier. Compared to oleoyl sarcosine alone, the grade and the recovery of scheelite concentrate were increased from 8.07 per cent to 33.54 per cent and from 55.1 per cent to 73.4 per cent, respectively. Infrared studies with pure calcite and scheelite minerals showed that while alkyl oxine is adsorbed on the scheelite surface, it is not adsorbed on the calcite.

Determining the mechanical properties of rocks is important for various civil engineering fields, including the mining of raw materials for aggregates used in the construction and paving industries. Traditionally, the mechanical properties of rocks are obtained through in situ and laboratory tests during geotechnical surveys. However, these time-consuming surveys involve many resources. In contrast, hyperspectral remote sensing methods make it possible to identify the mineralogical composition and crystallographic structure of the rock; properties that control the mechanical properties of the rocks. In this work, we characterise the mechanical properties of carbonate rocks by using a hyperspectral sensor in laboratory conditions. We collected about 150 cylindrical samples of carbonate rock, with a wide range of strength values from several rock outcrops in Israel. We used a point spectrometer in the range of 0.4–2.5 μm and a spectral image sensor in the range of 3.0–12.0 μm, scanning the samples to obtain the signature of their light reflections and spectral emissivity. We then measured the samples’ density, porosity, water absorption, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). We used sophisticated data mining to find statistical relationships between the hyperspectral signatures of the samples and their mechanical properties. We used this data to identify the most dominant wavelengths for predicting mechanical properties. We found that the density, porosity, and water absorption of carbonate rocks could be confidently predicted based on spectroscopy data, while the UCS of the rock could also be predicted, but less significantly. The results of the study pave the way for the development of measuring tools for the mechanical properties of rock, based on non-destructive tests of quarrying materials.

Blast furnace is a countercurrent moving bed reactor that produces pig iron from iron bearing materials like pellet, sinter or lump ore. The furnace has cylindrical shape and the lump solid materials are alternatively charged onto the top of the furnace. Hot air is introduced through tuyeres that are set on the lower furnace wall. Auxiliary fuels (pulverised coal, oil or natural gas) and raw materials (fine ore or fluxes) are injected into the furnace with blast air from the tuyeres. In front of the tuyeres, coke particles react with oxygen in the blast air and generate carbon monoxide. The hot reacting gas heats up the lump solids and reduces iron oxides in the upper furnace. In the middle height of the furnace, the reduced iron and slag are fused by the combustion heat and form the cohesive zone. The molten iron and slag that are generated in this region trickle down through the packed bed of coke particles and flow into the bottom of the furnace. Therefore, the flows of gas, lump solids and liquids exist at the same time in the lower part of the blast furnace.

Ballarat Goldfields Limited is currently re-opening the old workings of the East Ballarat Goldfield which contain an estimated 1800 ML of groundwater. The disposal of this 'minewater' was of concern: the minewater is of moderate salinity; increased salinity levels have interfered with agriculture and water use at a number of locations downstream from Ballarat. Extensive numerical studies indicated that treated minewater could be discharged into the Ballarat Creek system for dilution by sewage effluent and by surface runoff after rainfall events. An automatic real-time salinity management system has been developed to enable the disposal of saline minewater in this fashion. A desk top computer operates the system: discharge and salinity readings are taken automatically each hour and filed away; the maximum allowable rate of discharge of treated minewater is calculated; pumps are switched on and off. The system readily enables daily, weekly and monthly data reports together with floppy disks of 'raw' data to be prepared in formats suitable for direct submission to the Victorian Environmental Protection Authority.

The Bungaroo Valley hosts a concealed Tertiary channel iron deposit (CID) along a 17 km stretch of its length. Bungaroo Valley is approximately 0.5 km wide upstream at its easternmost extent, and 3.5 km wide downstream where it joins the Jimmawarrada Creek. The valley follows the axial trace of an anticline that plunges gently to the southeast, and the CID infills the valley. Mineralisation extends to a depth of 230 m below the surface, and almost the entire deposit occurs below the water table. Bungaroo Valley cuts through the Buckland Hills and is bounded to the north and south by steep scarps capped with the resistant Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. Basement rocks are believed to be mostly Wittenoom Formation shales and dolomites, with Mount McRae Shale and Mount Sylvia Formation also present. Deep, localised depressions appear at the base of the CID sequence towards the north edge of the upstream section of the valley, while downstream the basal CID contact is relatively flat and shallow. In both cases the profile of the CID surface closely mirrors that of the basal contact. The localised depressions seen in the upstream basal CID contact produce significant variations in CID thickness of up to 100 m over short strike distances. This uneven palaeotopography is most likely due to eddying and waterfalls forming within the riverbed prior to CID deposition during a time when the water table was much lower than at present. It may also be associated with possible karsting in an underlying dolomite unit and subsequent syn- or post-depositional collapse of the overlying CID. The irregular basal contact of the Bungaroo CID sequence has implications for mining in terms of pit design and resource accessibility.
