The influence of the insulating properties of lunar regolith was shown in the sub-surface temperature tests performed by the Apollo missions, with no significant temperature fluctuations occurring below 80 cm from the lunar surface even if surface temperatures fluctuated >200 K between lunar days and nights (Heiken et al, 1991). Key to the thermal insulation of the regolith is its low density near the surface having the greatest insulative effect with the lunar regolith becomes denser with depth. As the regolith becomes denser, the thermal conductivity of the regolith increases (Hayne et al, 2017). Thermal modelling software, Oxford 3D Thermal Model, which mapped the lunar surface temperatures effect on the thermal influence at the lunar south pole sub-surface over a lunar year found areas with brief illumination with surface temperatures >120 K could have sub-surface temperatures <112 K that can sustain long-term stable water ice at depths of <30 cm (Paige et al, 1992; King et al, 2020). Further to this, the observation of water molecules or other hydroxyls by the NASA/DLR Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) in non-permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) on the Moon, indicated that water could be present beyond PSRs (Honniball et al, 2021). Using the Oxford 3D Thermal Model in selected regions in the lunar south pole, can provide insights into the location and depth of cold traps that could sustain water ice.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 42 km northwest of the township of Katherine within the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated in the southeastern portion of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The Batman gold deposit, the largest of several deposits at Mt Todd, hosts an identified mineral resource of 92.9 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t) as at 31 December 1993. Host rocks at Batman are assigned to the Early Proterozoic Burrell Creek Formation, comprising greywacke and siltstone interbedded with shale. Gold mineralisation is associated with a very broad zone of sheeted and stockwork quartz-sulphide veins that occupy a corridor of intense brittle fracture and faulting. A conceptual model of formation involves the dilation of joints and micro-faults within overlying sediments during sinistral movement along a basement shear zone. Synchronous granite intrusion generated convective circulation of crustal fluids through the sedimentary pile resulting in the formation of auriferous quartz veins within favourable structures. The Batman zone of mineralisation is not directly related to fold structures which typify several other major gold deposits within the Pine Creek Geosyncline.

Sensitive and tolerant species of macroinvertebrates were present across a wide range of conductivity concentrations in the Isaac River catchment in Central Queensland, indicating the need for further ecological studies in the field to underpin the development of regionally-tailored guidelines for conductivity. The Isaac catchment has naturally high conductivity, but there is also increasing pressure on resource companies to ameliorate saline mine water discharge. Recently, catchment management efforts have included a revision of the water quality guidelines that are specific for the broader Fitzroy catchment. These guidelines include the use of macroinvertebrates as indicators of ecosystem health, but developing and applying such guidelines first requires a good understanding of macroinvertebrate ecology and population dynamics, ideally from field validation. To date, studies of macroinvertebrate tolerance to conductivity in southern freshwaters, as well as in laboratory-based ecotoxicological tests conducted in Queensland, have suggested that ranges exceeding 1000 ¦S/cm are likely to have negative impacts on survivorship of all taxa. However, these results may not be transferable to natural populations of macroinvertebrates from the Isaac, where the naturally high-conductivity water may allow the opportunity for adaptation. To test this, macroinvertebrate assemblages were examined at a series of sites in the upper Isaac River catchment at the end of the dry season in 2012. Patterns in the assemblages were examined together with water quality parameters, in order to gauge the ability of macroinvertebrates to survive at conductivity concentrations exceeding 1000 ¦S/cm. The specific conductance of the field sites ranged from 477 ¦S/cm to 9791 ¦S/cm and a total of 39 families from 13 orders were identified. Species richness was not significantly different between sites of differing conductivity. Macroinvertebrate populations were dominated by Dipterans as well as the traditionally more pollution-sensitive families Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera. There was an absence of any correlation between conductivity and species richness (P &gt; 0.050), suggesting that macroinvertebrate taxa richness occurs independently of conductivity, at least in this particular cohort of mining and/or grazing influenced ephemeral systems in Central Queensland.CITATION:Stitz, L, Fabbro, L D and Kinnear, S, 2013. The CSIRO ore classification scheme for Pilbara ores was used as a reference frame to target recognisable ore types/textures with potentially elevated phosphorus content for detailed analysis. Particles of each individual ore texture were separated from a Brockman high-P ore and each class was characterised using methods including XRF, XRD, EPMA and synchrotron-based XAS. Results were then correlated with optical microscopy and hand specimen identification to establish any relevant associated mineralogical phases and/or textures. This represents a more systematic approach to identification of high-P ore components based on particle and goethite type and texture. The information can then provide the basis for more targeted P-removal strategies factoring in the relationship between particle/ore texture and phosphorus deportment

BHAS, together with the G.K. Williams Laboratory, and Ausmelt Pty. Ltd., has examined a number of possible alternatives to conventional silver cupellation in gas fired reverberatory furnaces. Of these alternatives, a Sirosmelt furnace was preferred for both technical and economic reasons. Small scale work on Sirosmelt processes was carried out at the G.K. Williams Laboratory at Melbourne University in 1985/86. Pilot scale work was carried out at the Ausmelt plant in Melbourne in July 1987. Board approval for construction of a full size plant was received in October, 1988, and construction of the plant is currently underway. The plant is expected to provide significant savings in operating costs and silver inventory. Hygiene around the furnace should also be greatly improved. An increase in cupellation rate of at least ten times is expected, compared with the conventional reverberatory furnace.

An amount of explosives, whether it be cylindrical, spherical, etc in configuration, with a hollow cavity in one face or end is known as a hollow or shaped charge. When this charge is initiated, a focussing of explosive energy will occur within this cavity. This focussing, or concentration of detonation products creates an intense localised force greater than just the simple detonation of a conventional explosive, (without a hollow cavity). If this hollow cavity explosive is directed against a target material this concentrated force is capable of creating a deeper penetration than the same amount of explosive without the hollow cavity. If a metallic liner material is used in the hollow cavity, upon detonation of the explosive this liner will form into a high velocity penetrating jet. Depending on the explosive type and the liner material&apos;s configuration the jet tip can travel up to 10 km/s. Linear shaped charges were developed using the abovementioned shaped charge concept but instead of being formed about an axis, they are elongated and constructed along the principal axis. Therefore instead of creating a narrow circular penetration jet, it forms a thicker planar cutting jet ideal for linear cutting purposes. Using Linear Shaped Charges (LSC) for pre-splitting is expected to result in more accurate directional fracture propagation, while minimising lateral micro fractures in the surrounding rock mass which is required to remain undamaged.

Directional hydraulic fracturing was invented by Polish experts and was first applied in coal mining to prevent hard roof rock bursts. Based on its successful application in coal mining, directional hydraulic fracturing has the potential to reorientate the hydraulic fracture trajectory. Recently, this technique has been introduced into cave mining for the purpose of lowering breakdown pressure. The hydraulic fracture is much easier to initiate with the assistance of an initial notch. No systematic theoretical or experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the influencing factors in the hydraulic fracture reorientation process. In this paper, the numerical modelling software Realistic Failure Process Analysis3D (RFPA3D) – Flow Version is used to study the influence of the in situ stress condition and rock mass heterogeneity on directional hydraulic fracturing in brittle heterogeneous rock masses. Firstly, the reliability of RFPA3D in simulating hydraulic fracturing is validated by comparing its results with experimental results and the simulation results from the extended finite element method. The hydraulic fracture trajectory is then observed in a three-dimensional stress environment. The results indicate that for the in situ stress condition, when the borehole lies in the ?2–?3 plane, only the difference between ?2 and ?3 has an important influence on hydraulic fracture reorientation. Two case studies are presented in this paper. The first one discusses a roller compacted concrete water supply dam that was constructed in El Mauro in Chile to provide water for agriculture activities downstream of a copper mine during the dry season. The 23 m high dam used a bituminous geomembrane (BGM) as the low permeability upstream facing element on the dam to control seepage through the dam. This is the first time that a BGM has been used in this application. A deep cut-off trench was used to control seepage beneath the dam and through the abutments. This paper briefly presents the design of the dam, including selection of the concrete mix and maximum aggregate size that the use of the Coletanche BGM allowed, and provides details of the construction, quality control and assurance of the installation of the BGM. An ultrasonic apparatus was used as part of the quality control on the BGM seams.The second case study discusses a tailings dam in Cerro Lindo, Peru (near Chincha), where a watertight BGM was installed on the upstream face. Results are presented of the survey done by a consultant on the behaviour of the dam and in particular of the BGM following an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 in Chincha close to the site. A major challenge in managing coal seam gas (CSG) water is predicting how much water will be produced as the industry develops. Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (KCB) was commissioned by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) to develop a tool to forecast where, when and how much CSG water will be produced in the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins under various industry expansion scenarios.The water production tool (WPT) uses the Theis equation, a non-equilibrium groundwater flow equation that accounts for the effect of pumping time on well yield in confined aquifers, to predict water production volumes. Where multiple pumping wells are in close proximity, the required pumping rates for coal seam depressurisation are reduced. Therefore, pumping effects are projected spatially to assess interference effects between wells. Water production is then upscaled to the projected scale of the CSG industry within the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins.Two modifications were made to address the dual phase nature of CSG extraction (a transmissivity reduction factor) and the impact of weathering at the eastern margin of the Surat Basin (a ænear edge effectÆ factor). These factors modify relevant hydrogeological parameters in a consistent and defensible manner to more closely match observed water production.The WPT was verified by comparing results to equivalent Theis equation calculations and to type curves provided by CSG proponents. Calibration was achieved by varying the spatial distribution and intensity of the near edge effect factor in conjunction with a chi-squared analysis of residuals.The tool, which is now being maintained and further developed by the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), was built to balance numerical complexity against relative flexibility and simulation speed. Production targets are the basis for almost every decision made by operations personnel in the daily operation of a concentrator. It is the production targets that determine how the plant is operated and therefore determine its efficiency. However, to achieve maximum plant efficiency production targets must be relevant to the process and achievable.In RoseberyÆs case, for many years, production targets were taken from budget data which, with the exception of mill feed tonnes and grades were carried forward from the previous budget. The zinc concentrate grade target was fixed at 57 per cent Zn, a long-term average; it was the accepted æstandardÆ for Rosebery. Historical data showed this target was never consistently achieved and plant efficiency was highly variable.Investigations into the possible causes for the variable performance ruled out plant and mechanical issues. Despite the Rosebery concentratorÆs age the plant and equipment are more than serviceable and reliable. The mineralogy of the ore and specifically the iron content of the sphalerite was found to be the most significant determinant of zinc concentrate grade. It was found with increasing frequency that the zinc grade of the sphalerite in the ore was below the zinc concentrate grade target. Consequently on these occasions attempts to meet the required concentrate target destabilised the process resulting in plant inefficiencies.Using the correlation between iron and zinc, data modelling was able to accurately predict the maximum zinc concentrate grade achievable for any ore type. By using on stream analysis instrumentation the operations personnel are now provided with constantly updated concentrate grade targets. By knowing the mineralogical limits of the ore at the time it is being treated process stability is maintained allowing plant efficiency to be optimised. Iron and steelmaking slags have been utilised for a century. All dumps are now exhausted. Because of constraints in establishing new stock yards, all slags have to be utilised immediately. At present, this is being achieved. Only in a situation where there is an increase in pig iron and crude steel production, together with the impact of new residual materials competing from other industries can marketing problems be anticipated.

The Mine Safety and Inspection Act, 1994 of Western Australia recognises the importance of ground control in underground mining. The recent safety performance of underground mining is summarised in terms of the most common causes of injury and fatal accidents. A review of current ground control practices is presented and the concepts of local and large-scale ground control are introduced. The need for a more systematic approach to ground control is considered to be directly related to requirement to improve safety performance. The new regulations will require that certain geotechnical issues be addressed during the life of a mine. To comply with the regulations it is suggested that a ground control management plan be developed for each mine. The geotechnical issues associated with the ground control management plan are reviewed and hazard recognition aspects discussed.

The Tropicana Gold Mine, owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70% owned and managed) and Independence Group NL (30%) is located 330 kilometres east-northeast of Kalgoorlie, Australia, in the newly developed Albany-Fraser Orogen. Following extensive feasibility studies, a high pressure grinding roll (HPGR)-ball milling circuit was selected based on the reduced power requirements and thus reduced operating expenses. The HPGR-ball mill circuit was estimated to require 75% of the energy of a standard semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit. Even with an anticipated greater capital cost, the HPGR-ball mill circuit was found to give significantly better financial returns in all cases investigated in the feasibility study. A comparison between the specific energy requirements of the HPGR, crush and SAG based circuits (SABC) from the feasibility work was conducted and the HPGR circuit was found to be considerably more energy efficient. A survey was conducted and the efficiency of the HPGR was similar to both the overall circuit design and the HPGR laboratory results, reflecting the accuracy that is possible for design and operation of HPGR circuits.Between 2015 to 2016, the Tropicana circuit has achieved a 20% increase in throughput from 780 to 930 t/h, and this increase has been maintained in 2017. This improvement can largely be attributed to upgrades to material handling processes, increased HPGR speed and smaller HPGR screen apertures. An electron probe micro-analyser, controlled by a dedicated mini-computer,has been operating at Imperial College since 1970. The data assessment capability of the computer was limited and, in order to make better use of the information produced by the analyser, extra computing facilities were needed. Following the initiation of a Laboratory Automation Project at Imperial College involving the use of a central computer linked to laboratory type computers and to further more powerful systems,it became possible to carry out much more detailed and extensive mineralogical analyses by connecting the mini -computer to the Laboratory Automation Network. The paper describes the techniques employed including hardware, software, inter- connection, analysis and operating methods.

Gold mining cyanide-bearing solutions can pose a risk, cause significant wildlife deaths and adverse public relations and result in non-compliance with regulatory conditions. The International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code) was developed as a voluntary code to encourage industry-wide improvements in managing cyanide responsibly. The Code requires design and implementation of robust monitoring programs for compliance under the following standards of practice: 4.1, 4.4 and 4.9. A robust monitoring regime can be complicated as each processing and tailing system is different. The following systems are commonly used in Australia: carbon-in-leach (CIL); carbon-in-pulp (CIP); heap leach process ponds; tailing waste disposal systems; peripheral discharge, central discharge and in-pit disposal. Some terrestrial wildlife can be denied access by fencing tailing storage facilities (TSFs) or other physical barriers, therefore limiting wildlife interaction with cyanide-bearing tailing and solutions to mainly birds and bats. While wildlife monitoring programs for processing and TSFs contain similar core attributes, it is necessary to adapt monitoring to take into account the site-specific features of each system. These core attributes are discussed in this paper, with reference made to cyanide concentration and associated methodologies. The issue is considerably complicated if tailing solutions are deemed or discovered to be toxic to wildlife. Essentially cyanides are required to be measured to gain an understanding of the concentrations to which wildlife may be exposed. This usually equates to measuring the cyanide concentration of solutions entering and leaving a tailing system. To assess the risk to wildlife presented by tailing and heap leach systems it is necessary to monitor both the hazard (cyanide concentrations) and the exposure (live wildlife species, presence and interaction). These tasks need not be arduous and a system of simple frequent monitoring has been developed and implemented for Code compliance. The wildlife monitoring developed by Donato Environmental Services (DES) and used at mining operations departs from the industry norm. It documents observer effort, live wildlife presence, habitat and behaviour in a tailing system, as well as deaths and carcasses. A greater understanding of wildlife cyanide toxicosis associated with this monitoring approach will enable mining companies to adopt a proactive approach to significantly reduce, or preferably eliminate, the impact on wildlife and assist in gaining Code compliance.

A great part of the research on froth flotation of gold ores deals with ores containing gold associated mainly with sulphides, resulting in a largely accepted view that what takes place with sulphides (eg pyrite) in a flotation cell also happens to gold particles. This paper is concerned with the influence of some inorganics (CuSO4, CaO and NaCN) on gold particles flotation, using ethyl or amyl xanthates as collectors. The bench-scale tests were carried out with ground quartz and gold particles mixtures. Some findings stemmed from this study: flotation of the gold particles of size 0.16 mm was efficient adding only frother; larger gold grains were better recovered by the use of stronger collector CuSO4 did not seem to be an activator for gold; the addition of NaCN up to 200 g/t or CaO up to 2000 g/t did not depress the gold grains when amyl xanthate was used as collector although with ethyl xanthate the gold depression was verified.

Woodlawn Mines began underground operations in 1986. At the time of going underground it was envisaged that there would be no &apos;contract&apos; payment to the underground employees. This was a relatively unique step to make, especially as most major underground mines in Australia relied heavily on the contract system to motivate their workforce. (Obviously with varying degrees of success.) Woodlawn faced the task of motivating their employees through a multi-skilled system with a great emphasis on leadership and a genuine care for their employees. The &apos;proof of the pudding&apos; is that Woodlawn has not lost any time over industrial issues since beginning underground operations in 1986. To achieve success in any operation the organisation must not only be advanced in its management principles but also be prepared to be innovative in the way it deals with physical problems, ie ground control, equipment selection and maintenance. Difficult ground conditions at Woodlawn have necessitated the deployment of two Cabolt Jumbos and the construction of cost-effective shotcrete systems. The shotcrete system now being built has been tested in a prototype form and is proving to be a safe and simple way to manage weak, low stress friable ground. Although the ground at Woodlawn has low stress component by virtue of the fact the ore can have a density of 4.5dm3, cable dowelling has become a necessity. The two cable dowel jumbos install high quality reinforced cables. The pressure of &apos;production&apos; means that these machines must be consistently available for use and the training of maintenance personnel and operators ensures that a maximum of cable dowels can be installed over any given time span. In any modem mine ventilation is a primary concern and the major area of concern comes from the vehicles themselves. In our recent replacement for the standard &apos;Toro&apos; loader, three engine options were considered. A relative newcomer to underground mining was accepted. The Detroit 60 series (DDEC) engine came with a great reputation and has lived up to this. The engine has an electronic management system that reduces particulates to a hardly visible minimum, provides great amounts of engine power and reduces fuel consumption by approximately 45 per cent. The operational benefits of such an engine are worth sharing through this conference.

ITSL Technology group employs around 100 people at Mississauga in Canada. Its long and proud history as a driving force for the worldÆs nickel industry continues, progressively adapting to meet IncoÆs ongoing development needs. The nickel industry, unlike many others in the minerals processing world, has not evolved into one or two narrow technology paradigms. Rather, each process requires a degree of optimisation to meet the characteristics of the ore. Without a competent team to address this complexity, the uncertainties that arise can greatly increase the risk (and costs) associated with the nickel industry developments. The development work carried out at ITSL Technology ranges from milling and metallurgical processing of ores through to development of value added products for the battery and electronics industries. It covers routine evaluation of ores for exploration (mine planning and greenfield), and provides on the ground support to bring specialist technical perspectives to site-based projects. In recent years, ITSL Technology has had as its particular focus the process development and commissioning support for IncoÆs major projects. Over the next several years, Inco will commission its Goro laterite operation, design and construct the further processing facility for VoiseyÆs Bay, undertake major upgrades at Sudbury, Thompson and PT Inco, and bring forward some additional resources currently in the exploration stage. The appropriate mix of both internal and external resources to effectively manage this project portfolio will prove critical to success. The key to ITSL Technology meeting these development challenges has been in working closely with its internal customers to ensure alignment of the value proposition, to identify the critical issues to be managed, and to understand the deliverables required. This paper discusses examples to reinforce these principles in the definition and development for two different projects; processing of VoiseyÆs Bay ores and concentrates and resource optimisation at Thompson.

"All underground coal mines in Australia are required to develop a Spontaneous CombustionManagement Plan (SCMP). The New South Wales Government has developed a guideline (MDG1006) to assist operations to comply with this requirement. A reference document is alsosupplied with the guideline that describes the type of information that is needed for input to theplan, including identifying possible tests that can be used for propensity assessment. However,there is no clear indication of what program of sampling and testing is suffi cient to provide adefi nitive assessment of spontaneous combustion propensity prior to and during mining. This paper reviews the existing methods available for quantifying spontaneous combustion propensity and discusses the sampling requirements that are needed from exploration to mining. A new, more defi nitive method of spontaneous combustion testing is also presented that benchmarks coal self-heating performance from mine ambient temperature to thermal runaway. Examples of the eff ectiveness of this new test method for identifying and quantifying reactive pyrite in coal as well as quantifying the diff erence between dry and wet season conditions are provided in the paper."
