The mining industry has been slow at adopting the latest management philosophies from other industry sectors, such as manufacturing, and in retrospect, with good cause. With the plethora of three-letter-acronyms such as TQM, JIT, TPM and now, BPR each touted as the panacea for profit improvement, you wonder if you must choose one or attempt to embrace them all! In truth, each new insight into organisational behaviour bears some investigation. This paper looks at the underlying principles and elements of successful change strategies, and how several mining companies, including coal mines, in Australia, Chile and Canada, are applying these principles to their operations. These examples illustrate the need to think radically, and to view mining as an overall process delivering value to the customer rather than a collection of functional silos. They also show that often, a continuous improvement initiative is not enough when a fundamental redesign, a paradigm shift, is needed for a performance breakthrough.

"Every year a large number of projects are evaluated by small listed and unlisted mining companies that are hoping to find the ideal project, which will catapult them from a mining junior status to that of a mid-tier mining company. Usually this includes finding the æidealÆ or ærightÆ orebody and then developing a process which will allow cost-effective recovery of the valuable metals and the production of a saleable product. These dreams are seldom realised and there are a number of good and obvious reasons for this. Issues that are generally high up on the agenda for the smaller companies are: cost of developing a project before the feasibility study stage finding a suitable, or optimum processing technology financing of the project dealing with risk.The most expensive part of the development process for the small miner is often the exploration side of the business and finding the æidealÆ orebody. However, finding the right orebody will not be discussed in this paper. The æidealÆ orebody does not necessarily solve the problems of the mining junior, as much of the uncertainty lies in the process required to recover and produce the final metal product. Once a mineralised deposit has been identified and the grade at least reasonably qualified, the development of a suitable process becomes the driver to convert the deposit into an orebody. This paper proposes that a small exploration company has a very limited opportunity to succeed if it does not do sufficient homework before it identifies the æidealÆ orebody. The risk profile for the small mining company, by its very nature, has to be different to that of a major company and as a result the opportunities often lie in managing different and often new process options, which may be the key to bring such projects on line successfully.CITATION:Muller, H and Lorenzen, L, 2012. This paper presents a method for estimating the strength and stability of model coal pillars with bedding planes (weakness planes) inclination. The strength of coal relative to the angular difference between the principal stress direction and bedding planes is considered. The failure behaviour of model coal pillars containing weakness plane inclination by using servo-control Schenck Machine are shown. Uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength of coal specimens are investigated, and test results indicated that the strength of coal pillars depends on the weakness planes inclination with respect to the principal stress direction. However, it is shown that with increasing confining pressure, the effect of weakness planes inclination on the strength of the coal specimens is reduced. An empirical method is given for prediction the compressive strength of coal containing weakness planes inclination. The results of this method are compared with the experimental results and Jaeger theory. Finally, three well-known empirical strength criteria were tested against the triaxial test data for coal containing weakness planes inclination.

Surface displacements are routinely monitored at multiple points during slope excavation. The monitoring data reveals the safety status of the slope under current loading conditions. They can be used to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope by reducing the uncertainties of the prediction model and its model parameters. In a multistage excavation, the observed displacements in the current stage can be used to update the prediction of the displacements in subsequent stages. Besides, due to the spatial correlation of the slope parameters, the prediction of the displacement at one location can also be updated using the monitored displacements at adjacent locations. This study aims to develop a multistep updating method to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope using time-series monitoring data at multiple points. This method integrates the theoretical computational model with observational evidence. It considers the inherent uncertainty of the slope, model uncertainty and measurement uncertainty. With more monitoring information being incorporated, the prediction becomes closer to the actual performance of the slope. edicted increase in, Aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Brown coal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, has been produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water and charring at 115000. The cost of processing is estimated to be competitive with petroleum coke. Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but. by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value and the Particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water-displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement. Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch. The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were, evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell. Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties, and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity and carbon consumption on a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 percent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum coke alone. It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.

Improving liquid blending operations in production plants is of paramount importance in many industries like mining, oils, petrochemicals and food. For accurate blending of different types of process streams, like homogeneous, heterogeneous, cold or hot streams, it is essential that the composition can be accurately monitored in real time. Advances in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technology offers the possibility to apply XRF for online elemental analysis. In this paper we discuss an online EDXRF analyser for accurate blending control in many industries.EDXRF has the advantage that multiple elements can be measured simultaneously over a wide concentration range of wt per cent down to a few mg/kg, for elements between sodium (Na) and americium (Am) in the periodic table. To reach the desired accuracy and precision in an online XRF analyser, it is important to bring a representative and homogeneous sample of the process flow into the optical path of the analyser. The combination of a laminar flow cell design and advanced EDXRF technology leads to low detection limits and high performance. The obtained precision and accuracy allows for much tighter process control. Australian mining and engineering companies have increasingly been investing in the mining industry in Brazil. It is a country of enormous mineral and agricultural wealth, with a well-established mining sector. Some Brazilian mining companies and personnel have been journeying in the opposite direction. There are significant differences in the approaches to engineering between the Australian and Brazilian industries that can cause confusion for companies operating in the other country. These range from differing expectations during the various stages of feasibility studies to style of plant and contracting strategies during the construction phase of projects. Some of the differences are driven by tax regimes, labour costs, or different settlement patterns. Others are the result of different histories and pressures on the industries in the two nations.This paper describes some of the differences in approach found in the two countries and some of the reasons for them.

To study the creep properties and the energy evolution characteristics of the weakly cemented rock (WCR) in western China, the creep deformation damage law of weakly cemented mudstone (WCM) under graded loading and the energy evolution characteristics of each creep stage were analysed based on the triaxial graded loading creep test of WCR. The results showed that as the confining pressure increased, the creep failure strength of the WCM increased from 9.5 to 24.8 MPa, and the relative displacement of the mineral particles in the mudstone increased gradually, resulting in a reduction in the fracture angle from 79.7° to 58.3°. At the same stress level, the strain energy Ue, the total energy U, and the dissipation energy Ud all increased as the confining pressure increased, but the growth rates of U and Ud decreased gradually, while the growth rate of Ue remained high. At the end of the stable creep stage, Ue increased slowly with the confining pressure, while U and Ud increased rapidly with the confining pressure, and their growth rates were basically the same. At the end of the accelerated creep stage, the growth trends of these three energies were all positively correlated with the confining pressure, Ue was significantly lower than that at the end of the stable creep stage, and Ud and U were further increased. These results revealed the unique creep properties and energy evolution characteristics of the WCR, providing a theoretical basis for long-term stability control of roadways that are built with WCR.

The Merensky Reef at Northam Platinum Mine in South Africa is characterised by a high degree of variability with respect to reef elevation (difficult to mine), as well as mineralogy and texture (difficult to process). Development along strike and down dip of multiple reef types has led to unpredictable run-of-mine characteristics that pose problems for the mineral processing circuit at Northam. Following mining terminology, Normal, Transitional (NP2) and Pothole (P2) Merensky reef types can be defined, and this geometallurgical study aims to characterise and understand the relationship between their mineralogical characteristics and laboratory scale batch flotation performance. The plagioclase-rich NP2 reef ore is the easiest ore to process in terms of capacity for high mill throughput as well as flotation performance. The lack of very fine-grained disseminated sulfide textures in the NP2 reef ore results in better liberation characteristics relative to the Normal and P2 reef types. Consequently, chalcopyrite, pentlandite and sulfide recoveries are highest for the NP2 reef ore. The lack of ferromagnesian minerals in the NP2 reef ore also results in the recovery of the least amount of floatable gangue during flotation tests. The Normal and P2 reef ores are similar to each other, with an orthopyroxene-rich mineralogy with associated alteration minerals. The P2 reef is also characterised by the highest sulfide content and degree of pentlandite liberation. Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite liberation is only significantly increased by a change in grind for the Normal reef ore. The change in grind, however, only significantly affects pentlandite flotation performance and overall froth stability for the Normal reef ore. However, for all three ores, a small change in grind has a detrimental effect on pentlandite flotation performance.

The Split Rock low grade copper prospect was discovered in 1969 by Cyprus Mines Corporation using stream geochemistry. Cyprus "Imes carried out geochemical and geophysical investigations, geological mapping, and percussion and diamond drilling, and concluded that the grade of mineralisation was too low (0.1% copper) to be of interest. In the present study, the geology was remapped and very substantial differences from the previous observations are recorded. (lineraliced acid dykes in a 1 000 foot hole drilled by Cyprus Mines had a total inter- section of almost 300 feet with an average crade of 0.4% copper. Surrounding drill holes at distances of 500 feet did not intersect +hese dykes. This group of drill holes occupies a small part of an area about 2 km by 1 km which was affected by intense quartz sericite pyrite alteration along many fractures with an associated soil copper anomaly. It may be that the quartz sericite alteraiion with feeble copper mineralisation represents hydrothermal alteration emanating `rom a mineralised intrusion of which the dykes mentioned above are off shoots.

The effect of leaching three samples of Mt Weld ore with a-hydroxysulphonic acid [(CH3)2(COH)SO3H] was assessed. Apatite present in the samples was found to be readily soluble but calcination up to 600¦C was required to increase the solubility of crandallite. Increasing the calcination temperature increased dissolution of both phosphate and alumuuum. The optimum SO2 content in solution for the dissolution of crandallite ores was found to be lower than for apatite.

The presence of high concentrations of dissolved ions in groundwater, sea water or recycled water may alter the water structure, particle surface wettability and colloidal interactions between bubbles and particles and can have a significant effect on mineral flotation. While the impact of water quality on the flotation of precious and base metal minerals is well established, no relevant published study exists currently regarding the effect of water salinity on the flotation of rare earth bearing minerals. This paper attempts to quantify the effect of water quality variation on flotation recovery and grade of rare earth minerals and gain an understanding on which ions existing in saline water affect flotation behaviour. Specifically, it is aimed at investigating the effects of water quality on the flotation of monazite in the presence of cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+. Flotation tests, zeta potential measurements, and adsorption tests were performed to explain the flotation behaviour. It was found that monovalent ions such as Na+ and K+ have negative impact on rare earth minerals recovery and grade. The result of single mineral flotation tests showed that the floatability of monazite was significantly depressed in the presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+. The result of single mineral flotation test showed varying depression levels in the presence ions in the order of Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na ~ K.

Mineral occurrences of the Hillgrove Au-Sb-W district are hosted in late Palaeozoic polydeformed, hornfelsed metasediments and Permo-Carboniferous granitoids of the NewEngland Orogen. In excess of 204 individual occurrences have been identified to date with the mineralisation developed as strike extensive (>20 km of known veining) and potentially depth extensive steeply dipping fissures. These are contained within an elongate area measuring some 9 km by 6 km in surface dimensions. Recorded gold production of 720 000 ounces along with current resources in the order of 340 000 ounces highlight the significance of this district. Historical antimony production is estimated at in excess of 50 000 metric tonnes. Significant tungsten of over 2000 t in the form of scheelite has also been produced from the field. Mineralisation is developed in veins, vein breccias, sheeted veins, network stockworks and as alteration sulfide haloes to the main structures. The vast majority of fissures are subvertical and vary in widths of up to 20 m in places. Paragenetic studies have previously indicated that the earliest mineralising event was a scheelite-bearing phase of quartz veining. Subsequent phases of arsenopyrite-pyrite-quartz-carbonate veining were accompanied by gold and minor base metal sulfides. Alteration is typically sericite-ankerite-quartz. Overprinting stibnite-quartz veining with gold-electrum, aurostibite and arsenopyrite form an important subsequent phase. Veining can be inferred from historical records to extend for vertical depths of over 1 km.

Several coal preparation plants are presently "automated" to the extent of automatic sequencing and interlocking via digital means, together with closed loop control on various level and density circuits. This paper will explore the potential for second generation automation utilizing on-stream ash analysers and other measuring elements so as to optimize the total metallurgical process. This would enable maxim-ization of recovery, improved product homogeneity and minimum reagent consumption.

The green field discovery of a two million ounce high-grade refractory gold ore deposit in the Indonesian Province of Sulawesi Utara, led Newmont to utilise its proven technical expertise in dry grinding and whole ore roasting to develop a 2000 tonne per day, 160 000 ounce per year operation in this remote and picturesque location.Located at an elevation of 250 in above sea level and ten kilometres to a deep water natural harbour, the hard rock open pit mine, process plant and infrastructure facilities were built to budget at a capital cost of US$132 million. The plant was commissioned with oxide ore, with the first gold poured in March 1996 and with refractory ore in January 1997. The operation rapidly met its production targets because of extensive forward planning and training programs developed for the local workforce. The presence of steep topography, fertile coastal plains, high rainfall, high seismicity of this location led to the decision to dispose of neutralised tailings in deep water off the coast instead of impounding tailings in a dam. This paper describes the development of the project and the challenges in developing a gold operation in a remote location which lacked infrastructure, the steps taken to ensure a smooth commissioning, and the selection of the workforce to operate a technically sophisticated facility.

Hydroseparation (http://www.cnt-mc.com) was used to concentrate sized fractions (from <38 ¦m to 150 ¦m) of various ore products ahead of carbon-in-pulp (CIP)-treatment. The resulting size-by-size concentrates were mounted as monolayer polished sections and subjected to automated unattended precious metal searches by image analysis (see Lastra, Wilson and Cabri, 1999). Systematic variations in Au-deportment permit quantification of Au reporting as discrete grains from fresh-feed through to pressure oxidation (POX)- and CIP-feed. Application of hydroseparation, image analysis and assays to characterising tailings (from <10 ¦m to 106 ¦m) from four mine sites is also described. Results are encouraging enough to predict that the combination of hydroseparation (HS) and automated image analysis could become a standard methodology for study of precious metal ores and metallurgical products.

This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

Grinding clinker to finished cement consumes more energy than any other comminution process. World production of cement in 2009 was 2840 million tonnes and the energy required for comminution was 40-60 kWh/tonne depending on the clinker characteristics and the fineness of the finished cement. Machines used include single and multi compartment ball mills, HPGRs, vertical roller mills, centrifugal air separators, V separators, screens and crushers. The circuit most commonly used consists of a closed circuit HPGR followed by a single compartment ball mill and an air separator, and in operation the variables are adjusted to obtain maximum throughput with no loss of quality of the separator fines.A common objective in cement plants is to reduce energy consumption without affecting the particle size in the finished cement and simulation is used as one procedure to achieve this. Models are now available for all the machines commonly used in clinker circuits and circuit optimisation studies using simulation have been carried out in many plants leading to decrease in energy consumption per tonne of cement. In this paper the models used will be discussed briefly and several case studies will be reviewed which will highlight the effect of change in ball size in a two compartment mill, the role of the HPGR in an HPGR – ball mill – air separator circuit, and the use of a high intensity vibrating mill for producing finished cement with high additive ratio.

A simple apparatus for delivering pulverized coal as fuel to a SIROSMELT lance is described, and its performance in smelting tests is evaluated. Using the pulverized coal as fuel, the SIROSMELT furnace performed well in both oxidative copper smelting and reductive smelting (zinc fuming). In both cases the evidence suggests that part of the combustion occurred by indirect oxidation of coal particles entrained in the bath. Oxygen potential measurements made during the zinc fuming tests confirmed the general features of the the non-equilibrium mechanism for zinc fuming proposed by Richards and Brimacombe. The zinc level in the slag during continuous fuming was lower than was predicted using an equilibrium model.

Marcobre SAC (Marcobre) is developing the Mina Justa project in Peru. The project has a lower grade oxide orebody overlaying the higher grade sulfide orebody. The oxide ore is treated by acid leaching; consumption of acid is high and is managed by vat leaching rather than the more conventional heap leaching process.The leaching process uses ore crushed to 100% passing 8 mm to optimise copper recovery. Acid consumption generally increases with a higher proportion of fines. Marcobre is investigating a three-stage crushing circuit with high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) in the third stage, instead of the more conventional four-stage cone crushing circuit. The use of HPGR can result in higher fines production due to the higher compression forces in the crushing zone. This paper reports on the outcomes of the test work completed by Marcobre in 2016 and 2017 to manage fines production and compare the use of HPGR with conventional crushing on a high acid consuming ore.At moderate pressing forces, a HPGR crushing circuit appeared to produce similar size distributions to cone crushing.
