Subsequent to large scale trials in 1987, the installation of a submerged lance Sirosmelt furnace system was approved in late-1988 for the cupellation of retort bullion to dore silver. Commissioning work commenced in June 1990. During the process air is lanced into a molten slag bath contained in a cylindrical vessel to rapidly oxidise the granulated feed bullion from 15 - 25 per cent silver to rough dore grade. The process is now an integral part of the Precious Metals operation replacing the first stage reverberatory cupellation furnaces to achieve productivity improvements, lower silver inventory and increased silver Recovery.

To date, the scheduling and access design of an underground mine have only been considered as two separate optimisation problems. First, access to the mine is designed and then the scheduling is completed. One drawback of this approach is that the costs of access construction fail to be reflected in the net present value (NPV) calculation. In this paper, designing the access and scheduling its construction are formulated as a single optimisation problem.The underground mine access construction process can be classified according to the number of faces being developed concurrently. An underground mine with a single decline branching at a junction point into two declines is considered. After construction reaches the junction, the two faces of the decline can be constructed sequentially or concurrently.This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for optimally locating a junction point to maximise the NPV where two faces are being developed concurrently. The NPV is defined by taking the locations of orebodies and their values, decline construction costs, decline development rate and discount rate into account. The variation of the NPV and the optimal locations of the junction point for one and two concurrent development faces for a range of discount rates are discussed and compared. As a result of the explosion in the 512 panel at the Moura No 2 mine in 1994 the role of the ventilation officer (VO) to submit sealing plans (on behalf of the operator/underground mine manager) has become one of the key duties of the VO of an underground coal mine in Australia. The intent of a sealing plan is to document the controls used to manage the build up of flammable concentrations of gases, and for these controls to be reviewed by the industry regulators. These sealing plans have brought a large amount of focus onto the sealing process and served the industry well. The legislation does not define sealing, or when it begins, but throughout the industry typically sealing plans are submitted 30 days prior to the last seal being constructed. This practice appears to have originated from the Moura 512 panel being a standing bord and pillar panel and where the explosive gas mixture could only occur after it was sealed. However, since the Moura disaster the industry has become dominated by goafing style longwall mining. Goafing panels differ from standing bord and pillar panels in that they typically have an unventilated goaf that can potentially contain an explosive mixture from start-up. This was recently highlighted by the explosion and fire on Longwall No 1 Tailgate at the Blakefield South Mine in 2011. The author ponders whether the industry should revisit sealing plans to focus on the core hazard and define that sealing begins when flammable concentrations of gases are created. Although defining when mine sealing begins is the key outcome of this paper, the main point is that VOs and industry regulators need to clearly understand what can occur in the atmosphere of underground coal mines. The excavation of sandstone of generally medium strength for the Liverpool Link Line by Dosco Mark 2A Roadheaders has demonstrated the versatility and good performance of road- headers in suitable rock formations. A description is given of the strata traversed by the tunnels together with descriptions of equipment and crews, excavation sequences, operating difficulties and the results achiev- ed. In addition tunnel construction is des- cribed for a difficult section where there was only O.Sm clearance between invert and a four lane vehicular tunnel below, and O.5m clearance between tunnel crown and a century old sewer above.

Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discoveried in the Jiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: (1) porphyry related; (2) metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and (3) sediment-hosted deposit. The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, The chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

The presence of platinum metals in the nickeliferous copper ore of the Thomson River Copper Mine near Walhalla, Victoria, was first revealed in 1905 by assays made in the laboratory of the Department of Mines (1).These disclosed the presence in the ore of 5 dwt. platinum metals, 1 dwt. gold and 13 dwt. silver per ton. Attempts to isolate the platinum-bearing mineral were unsuccessful, and the absence of obvious native platinum led the assayer, Mr. P. G. W. Bayley, to suspect that the platinum might be present as sperrylite. Subsequently, Mr. C. M. Lyons, then metallurgist to the Long Tunnel Gold Mining Company, Walhalla, tried to isolate the platinum mineral from samples of ore containing as much as 7 dwt. platinum metals, but again without success.In 1912, a sample of copper matte from this ore was submitted to Messrs. Johnson, Matthey and Company, Limited of London, for analysis. The analysis, which is quoted below by their courtesy, revealed tnat a large proportion of the metal pi'eviously reported as platinum was palladium, there being about two parts of palladium in the matte to one part of platinum.

This paper provides an overview of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling capability developed by CSIRO with the aim of improving the knowledge of flow migration dynamics within longwall goaf areas. The CFD models can be used to study the ingress of oxygen into the goaf in different ventilation scenarios and goaf drainage arrangements. This approach not only helps the design of effective gas control strategies but also the management of spontaneous combustion risk in the goaf. Innovative goaf inertisation strategies have been developed and implemented during longwall sealing operations. Work is continuing to develop general guidelines of proactive goaf inertisation strategies to suppress the development of spontaneous heating behind active longwall faces.

In the mid-1990s, after a long period of antipathy between the company and its detractors, Rio Tinto embarked upon an ambitious cultural change program that sought to transform the fundamental basis of its relationship with global, national and local stakeholders. This has evolved into a broader pursuit of positive cultural change within Rio Tinto as part of the mining industryÆs Sustainable Development initiative. Initially driven from the top down, the communities component of this program comprises an architecture of policies, value statements, social research and verification systems. The commitment to better community relationships is best exemplified in Australia by the scope and scale of the GroupÆs Aboriginal land access agreements, community development programs and the work of the Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation. While collectively these form the core elements of an evolving set of internal social competencies, development of second-tier competencies is required to organically embed a culture of sustainable relationships with local and regional communities. Second-tier competencies will include appreciation of social dynamics, social science and diversity at middle management level; rigorous social research that properly informs development options for companies and host communities; career paths and recognition within the mining industry for young professionals both generally and from stakeholder communities; proper community-needs assessments, research into such things as purchasing power and other economics data, and inventories of public goods such as land-carrying capacity and water availability. Without this information it is difficult to gain an appreciation of and to alert people to the consequences of change brought on by a mine. The next decade will see second-tier social competencies promoted within successful mining companies. Measures to achieve this include a range of Human Resource (HR) incentives such as recruitment and career advancement based on broad competencies rather than narrow technical proficiency, humanities training for mining professionals and performance rewards that recognise social competence. A sustainable future for mining in a globally connected social landscape requires selection of people who can listen, relate and act in an open social system. The challenge for the mining industry, its professional organisations and educational institutions is to acknowledge this and develop these new aspects of mining industry professionalism. This cannot be left to individual companies if the industry is to have a sustainable future.

The microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of cryptomelane-rich and pyrolusite-rich samples of manganese oxides was studied in repeated five-day static batch cultures over II weeks. Manganous ion was leached/reduced faster from the cryptomelane-rich samples (average 510 mg Mn2+/1/d) than from the pyrolusite samples (average 442 mg Mn2+/1/d).Cultures contained 20 per cent (w/vl) manganese mude, five per cent (w/v) molasses nutrient and the end-of-batch bacterial cell numbers were approximately 1010 cells/ml. The cryplomelane-rich sample incubates became more acid with time than the pyrolusite-rich incubates. The breakdown of pyrolusite proceeds in a relatively uniform way, while cryplomelane indicates a stepwise destabilisation.

Freeport IndonesiaÆs DOZ (Deep Ore Zone) mine is scheduled to commence production in the second half of 2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining methods and will have a number of major improvements when compared to previous block cave mines in the district. The DOZ will have an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system than in previous underground mines in the district. This paper will describe the mine plan, haulage, and ventilation systems, and compare them to those used in other operations in the district.

"Various approaches are used in the industry for establishing procedures (sample mass estimation and method of subsampling) for sampling and analysis of gold ores. The key factors that determine the accuracy of the results that can be expected for a given set of procedures are widely misunderstood.Recent developments in sampling theory show that the estimation of the accuracy that can be expected for a given gold ore as a function of sample mass is actually a simple matter. For a given sample mass, the accuracy that will be achieved depends only on the grade of the ore and the range of masses of the grains of the gold in the ore. This, of course, demands that a reasonable estimate of the distribution or spread of gold grain masses in the ore be known. But this is something that should be known if the gold is to be efficiently recovered in the processing plant.This paper provides a simple explanation of the real facts about sampling of gold, either in the field or in the plant, and provides results for a number of cases of combinations of fine and coarse gold in an ore. To counter depressed world nickel prices, a continuing effort is being made at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to reduce unit production costs. One major area in which production costs can be reduced is the substitution of coal for fuel oil. Two areas where this has been achieved to bring about a saving are, the addition of coal to flash furnace flux to reduce supplementary fuel oil requirements in flash smelting and the replacement of two oil-fired air preheaters with a coal-fired unit. These actions have resulted in coal replacing 67% of the current fuel oil requirement in flash smelting at the Kalgoorlie .Lckel Smelter.

Flotation behaviour can be controlled, due to diminishment of granula quality and extension of specific surface area, by adding coarse particles (high- grade concentrates) to condition pulp. It has been substantiated that coarse particles can intensify fine particle flotation and its mechanisms are effects of carrier, intermedium and assistant aggregation of coarse particles. Calculation and analysis of Reynolds numbers and their variation for different size particles, under specific turbulent dynamic conditions, reveal that agglomeration among granulae is subject to specific turbulent dynamic conditions. Furthermore, sizes and adhesion strength of flocculated particles are the function of specific physical and chemical factors. Based on this research an innovative ramification carrier flotation process has been developed, which has been applied to Fankou Lead- Zinc Mine, Guang Dong province, China, etc, with satisfactory results. These results shed light on distinction between conventional flotation and fine particle flotation, meanwhile, provide a basic approach for further solution of fine particle flotation problem.

The Writer's knowledge of this region began in 1912, while he was with the Geological Survey of South Australia, and, investigated the principles governing the occurrence of fresh and saline ground waters in the area then being opened for closer settlement by the railways under construction from Port Lincoln.These field investigatons for water were extensive rather than intensive, but other examinations covered certain mineral aspects. The Writer also has' had the benefit in the preparation of this paper, of later work done by others, as well as of the monumental earlier work in South Australia by the late H. Y. L. Brown.AREAThe area dealt with, approximately 21,000 square miles, lies to the south of the latitude of Port Augusta.TOPOGRAPHYAs a whole the region is one of low relief, but the Olinthus Range, west of Cowell and north of Cleve, reaches an elevation of 2,000ft., while there is als0 a high area west of Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay. At the north end of the region the Gawler Ranges are formed by the dissection of a thick sheet of felspar porphyry extending over two degrees of longitude, by a width of 20 to 70 miles, with fairly uniform maximum elevations of the undissected portions of the order of 1,000 ft. above sea level. South of the Gawler Ranges are many isolated ridges up to 1,000ft. in height, generally sedimentary and trend...

Iron from the blast furnace constitutes the starting point in steel production and any increase that can be made in iron production will bring about important repercussions in a long line of processes. Coke constitutes a major item in furnace operation and consumption at the Port Kembla Works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd. has been approximately 1,850 lb. per ton of iron produced on ore practice, or 3,000 tons per day.For many years coke quality has been subject to much criticism by furnace operators throughout the world, sometimes with little real grounds. Whatever the merits of previous arguments, and they were no doubt two-sided, the development of bigger furnaces has focused attention on coke strength. At the same time a decrease in the quantity of good quality coking coals available to many plants has stimulated research in this field.Extensive coke research has been carried out overseas, and in Australia the.B.H.P. Organization is now actively doing likewise in its Central Research Laboratories at Shortland near Newcastle, N.S.W., and works research groups at Newcastle and Port Kembla Steelworks. Similar work has been initiated in the beehive coking industry. Such work is in its infancy and this paper will outline the direction of the activities at Port Kembla rather than propound specific solutions.At Port Kembla good quality coking coals are readily available from the IIIawarra coalfield. The seams generally mined for coking are Bulli and Wongawilli and to a much smaller extent Tongarra. Characteristics of these coals appear in Table 1.

"This paper details the events leading up to a slope failure that occurred at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) and the remediation method executed using rope access specialists.n January 2016, KCGM Fimiston Pit experienced a double bench wall failure where approximately 80 000 t of material fell from the wall that blocked access to a ramp and caused minor damage to equipment.The event was triggered by heavy rainfall and occurred along unfavourable eastward dipping structures that lead into weaker shale/porphyry bands, which in turn left more material on the face. A remediation plan was formulated that would allow for the continuation of open pit operations while a full geotechnical assessment of the failure area could be conducted. This was accomplished by means of rope access specialists who abseiled down the wall and blasted off the remaining overhang using a portable drill rig and prepackaged explosives.This paper provides a brief overview of the KCGM operations, how the instability was identified and monitored, details of the failure event, outcomes of the geotechnical assessment and details on the remediation work.Citation:Graf, C and Sullivan, R, 2016. Clyde Materials Handling (CMH) and WorleyParsons have developed a concept for a flash furnace feed system using the specialist pneumatic conveying equipment expertise of CMH and the flash furnace process experience of WorleyParsons. CMH has developed a proprietary volumetric feeder (called a Rotofeed), which is extremely accurate and overcomes many of the problems inherent with loss-in-weight screw feeders and drag chain conveyors, previously regarded as state-of-the-art. Initial indications are that the Clyde-WorleyParsons feed system could deliver the following benefits to flash furnace operation: accurate pulseless delivery of feed material to the head of the burner leading to improved combustion performance and process stability; highly accurate split to the individual quadrants of a conventional burner tube, or provision of a smooth hollow curtain to a burner without guide vanes; decreased pressure pulsation in the furnace due to improved combustion control and performance; and decreased temperature fluctuations in the furnace due to improved combustion characteristics and hence reductions in refractory thermal stress and wear.

The existence of Gabal El Kahfa ring complex, located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, has been ascertained from aeromagnetic and aeroradiometric survey data as well as by aerial photography. Two maps for -the net aerial radiometric measurements reduced to ground level and aerial magnetic data corrected for the regional normal gradient of the earth's magnetic field have been constructed. The aeroradioactivity data have been interpreted geologically and analyzed statistically to outline various radiometric units and compute their charac- teristic statistics. The ring complex showed a circular radiometric feature and yielded a radiometric mean background and a standard deviation of 6.48 and 0.89 pR/h respectively. Besides, the observations showed a normal distribution. The aeromagnetic data have been reduced to the north magnetic pole, then filtered to produce the regional-and residual-component maps. Statistical trend analysis was conducted for the tectonic linea- ments resulting from the three magnetic maps, to define the structural framework of the area under study. This statistical study proved the exis- tence of trends in the east-west, northwest-south- east, northeast-southwest and north-south directions. The ring complex is characterized by a circular magnetic feature, whose average relief is 2150 nT. It is included within a high east-west trending magnetic zone. The latter represents a deep-seated uplift or anticline which is bordered from all sides by some faults of different trends.

Steel wire weld mesh is a common industry standard surface support used in underground mining, traditionally installed with mining drills during the bolting cycle. As underground mining depth and stress increase, mining methods and their sequences at these depths place challenges on conventional surface support options. These challenges have provided a need for high capacity surface support options that improve development efficiency, reduce the need for secondary ground support installation and is easily installed with current mining equipment. A 5m2 mesh testing machine was built, suspending a 9500kg concrete slab, designed with multiple hold down points to test varying bolting patterns. Mesh load and displacement is accurately measured using a data acquisition system which pushes against the restrained mesh module with an available 200kN load and 1200mm displacement capacity. A testing program comparing conventional surface support, straps and combinations of both were tested for baseline results. New module designs incorporating existing mesh types and new design concepts were manufactured to allow for single pass installation during a bolting cycle. Nine mesh types, mesh/strap combinations and new mesh module designs were compared using the same test method. Based on these results, two high capacity mesh module types are produced. This paper will detail the test program, load and displacement results and underground mesh module performance, describing the two high capacity mesh modules function within the development cycle and manual handling. The Cadjebut Mine is located 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing. Cadjebut is owned 58 per cent by BHP Minerals and 42 per cent by Billiton Australia. Cadjebut is a 'Mississippi Valley Type' (MVT) deposit. Minerals present are sphalerite, galena and marcasite in a sedimentary host of dolomite and siltstone. The ore contains few deleterious impurities and no silver. The mill was commissioned in the first half of 1988 at a rate of 320 000 tonnes per annum. An expansion in the latter half of 1989 has since increased production to 550 000 tonnes per annum. The initial geological resource at the commencement of mining was 3.8 million tonnes at 13.5 per cent Zn and 4.4 per cent Pb. There is sufficient ore left to sustain operations to 1995 at a grade of 11.2 per cent Zn and 3.9 per cent Pb. The ore from underground is stockpiled on the surface via a drift conveyor and from the stockpile is fed into a grinding circuit consisting of a SAG and ball mill. Cyclone overflow at a Pgp of 90 pm gravitates to the flotation circuit. Lead and zinc are sequentially floated to produce an 80 per cent Pb grade at 90 per cent recovery and a 61 - 62 per cent Zn grade at 96 per cent recovery. The concentrates are thickened and filtered before being trucked to the port of Wyndham 600 km away. From Wyndham the concentrates are shipped to smelters in Asia, Europe and Australia.
