Any defect activity resulting from an applied stimulus on a structure will generate a stress wave which travels in the medium under the laws of acoustics, thus the name of acoustic emission (AE). AE techniques can therefore provide information on the deformation of both surface and below ground structures. Two operating coal mines were monitored from the surface, and both mining activity and post mining microseismic activity were detected. The nature of the detected AE signals demonstrated that there were a range of deformation mechanisms in operation and that some predictive capabilities were possible with the Technique.

The Jacobs Sliding Floor (Floor) is experiencing a surprisingly long competitive life. The first Floor was used on the Camino Tunnel in California in 1960. At that time the Robbins Company had built only seven TBMs, and the future for such machines was considered doubtful by many, as compared to drill and blast methods. This was then, and still is, commonly called the "conventional" method. Robbins' TBM No. 8 was for the Hydro Electricity Commission of Tasmania (HEC) for their Poatina Hydro Project in 1961. In this writer's view, the Poatina experience was the start of successful hard rock boring machines. But, by coincidence, the HEC is using the newest Floor for their King River Hydro project, where driving with the Floor started in July 1986 on the King Tunnel. This paper examines the history and developments in both Floor design and other "conventional" tunnelling equipment, and the site specific conditions that have allowed this old concept to still be competitive in certain select situations. Parametric costing data and some actual progress records are included.

A broker relies heavily on mineral valuations and independent experts' reports to provide the fundamental information, both technical and commercial, which provides the basis of estimating the sharemarket value of securities and underlying assets. It is important to appreciate the significant variance that can occur between the market value and other types of valuation at a particular point in time. In general, most experts' reports and valuations seek to provide estimates of technical/fundamental or ""fair"" value which correspond to the Corporations Law and accounting standards requirements. They do not usually attempt to estimate (stock) market values and it is usually and quite correctly the broker's task to estimate market values on the basis of a technical appraisal and consideration of all other commercial, market and financial influences. Therefore ideally, an independent experts' report or information memorandum will include material relating to commercial and management aspects of a company as well as detailed technical reviews and fundamental valuations. Wherever sensible cash flow projections can be made, cash flow-derived valuations, usually based on discounted cash flow (DCF) calculations, remain the preferred valuation methodology. Brokers in general would not argue with this preference. However, there is a paucity of examples of valuations where alternative methods are applied as a check on the reasonableness of a DCF-based estimate.

The social license to operate (SLO) began as a metaphor for the ability of communities to stop mining projects. Soon people began to speak of levels of social license and the ability of communities to raise costs without completely stopping exploration or mining activities. Today the concept has spread to other industries and is evolving towards becoming a general management perspective on the socio-political rights and responsibilities of the corporation. The business case underpinning the SLO perspective on management is the need to assess and manage socio-political risk. For mining companies, socio-political risk has been steadily rising for several reasons, including the efforts of non-government organisations (NGOs) to pre-empt government policy options; the entry of mining companies into jurisdictions weak in the rule of law; and the weakness of global economic and financial regulation. In this perilous world beyond the comfort zone of effective government, mining companies must build their own socio-political stability by engaging directly with stakeholders to develop a strong SLO. In order to become a practical management perspective, the SLO needs to be measurable, which amounts to measuring the socio-political risks and opportunities presented by stakeholders. We present the results of efforts since 2009 to develop a globally reliable and valid measurement tool at the project and industry levels, validated in studies in Australia, Bolivia, Mexico and the USA. A factor analysis suggested four factors that mine management can address to raise their SLO level. The most chronically neglected factor involves the political right of the corporation to foster more equitable social contracts locally and regionally in both developed and developing countries. "The availability of real-time data in any process control system is critical for effective management of that system. At MMG LXML Sepon Copper Operation in Lao PDR, controlling the copper grade of the feed to the leaching circuit is paramount for maximising both productivity and copper recovery. Since 2008, real-time analysis data has been available to the process engineers from the Geoscan on-belt analyser installed on the Copper Mill feed conveyor, and highly accurate results on copper grade have allowed the process engineers to strictly control blending to overcome the variability in plant feed grade. The availability of real-time analysis data is crucial, as effective sampling of this stream is both difficult and error-prone, being only a snapshot in time of highly variable ore stockpiles, as well as having significant laboratory turnaround delays. Periodic sampling is used to verify the Geoscan data as accurate. Since its installation, the copper result has been the most critical output of the Geoscan. In recent times, the process engineers have sought to utilise other results from the Geoscan to further improve and control the process. One measurement of particular interest involves the real-time measurement of calcium and magnesium as a gauge of ore feed gangue acid consumption. To satisfy this end, accurate measurement of calcium and magnesium is becoming increasingly more important and has been the subject of ongoing collaboration between Sepon and Scantech, the manufacturer of the Geoscan. The Central Coal Mining Research Institute has developed the MAE acoustic emission monitoring system, the BD4-1 portable acoustic emission monitor and the MRB rock burst monitoring system. In the MAE system there is an IBM-PLAT, a receiver and 16 channels and the investigating range is 100 m. The main functions are detecting acoustic events from the working faces, periodically making statistics, prints, displays and storing of the results, and performing the off-line process such as drawing the curves of acoustic activity. The BD4-1 instrument has four channels, it works for more than 24 hours continuously, and keeps the data for more than 30 days after power tum-off. The BD4-1 is suited to the monitoring for a long or a short time as a fixed point where the system is invalid, especially to the monitoring of the acoustic activity promoted by the blasting. There is an IBM-PC/AT, a receiver and 16 channels spread 10 km in the system MRB. The system could on-line collect microseismic events throughout the whole mine, calculate the source location and the energy, and off-line draw the seismic activity draft of time-based or distribution in space. In practice, the forecasting is successful by using the acoustic emission and microseismic monitoring system and the portable instrument.

Treating an ore blend from five different deposits at Newgold’s Peak Gold Mine (PGM) has always been a challenge due to the inherent variability between each of the orebodies.Operating the processing plant at PGM with a ‘normal’ level of process control and a good operations and metallurgical team has allowed the processing plant to achieve above the name plate design at 102 t/h and recoveries in the order of 92.8 per cent for gold and 88.4 per cent for copper.With a company value and culture of striving for continuous improvement, PGM implemented the Manta Cube® system, an advanced process control system, for the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, gold leach circuit and tailings thickener over a 12-month period throughout 2012 and 2013.The overall benefits of implementing the Manta Cube® system has led to an increase in mill throughput of at least two per cent, improved SAG mill liner life, a ten per cent decrease in cyanide consumption and a reduction in flocculant of at least 30 per cent with no detriment to the gold and copper recoveries.The entire project had a payback period of less than two months, and the combined benefits resulted in an overall increase in revenue of at least $5 million per annum. The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leaching Process is based upon the direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide or lead-zinc bulk sulphide concentrates to produce zinc sulphate in solution and elemental sulphur in the leach residues. The zinc sulphate solution is compatible with conventional purification and electrowinning technology. The pressure leach residues can be treated for the recovery of elemental sulphur, lead and silver. With the conversion of sulphur to the elemental form, zinc pressure leaching allows zinc winning to be independent of sulphuric acid production. Direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates was started commercially in October 1980. Continuing research and development studies have defined various pressure leaching configurations for integration with existing roast-leach operations, for grass roots plants, or for plants which are to have the roast-leach section completely replaced. These studies have included the treatment of zinc concentrates from various Australian producers and the development of process flowsheets for potential applications in Australia.

The current emphasis within the mining industry to reduce the cost of production has stimulated interest in the fields of maintenance and operational reliability of capital intensive mining equipment. From an economic point of view, high reliability is desirable to reduce the maintenance costs of the systems. Two graphical methods consider reliability analysis. The first one, the method of Total Time on Test (177)-plotting deals with the reliability data which are free from trend and serial correlation. The second method which is based on time dependent modelling approach deals with the data which are not free from trends and serial correlation. The examples show how these graphical methods can be used to calculate the optimal maintenance intervals for components or systems.

Mining of copper ore is still the most important business in Chile. In order to mine ore with a copper content of less than one percent at Minera Los Pelambres in an economical way, opencast mining is mandatory. Due to the prevalence of avalanches at the mine, the concentrator was located in a stable area, some distance from the mine. As a consequence, the material has to be transported between mine and concentrator by conveyor. A downhill conveyor system has been implemented for more than ten years as the most suitable and most economical ore transport alternative. Due to the length (12.6 km) and inclination (1300 m drop) of the conveyor system, the stresses in the steel cord belt are the dominant design criterion, resulting in a belt quality of ST 7800. Additional dynamic belt stresses during transient operating conditions are avoided by the installation of high capacity adjustable frequency drives. The rating of a single drive unit is 2500 kW. During ten years of operation, several capacity increases have been implemented, from an initial 5800 t/h up to the current capacity of 9900 t/h. This presentation describes the engineering challenges of the implementation of the world's strongest belt conveyor system. Capacity increase measures like the development of new control and breaking strategy, proved by dynamic simulation of belt forces and belt speed scenarios are explained. During this long-term partnership of RWE Power International, the former Rheinbraun Engineering, with Minera Los Pelambres, RWE has been engaged continuously for development work, safety checks, expert opinions and maintenance audits, and giving new impulse to conveyor technology.

A laboratory study of size segregation is described using a model of a Paul Wurth hopper industrailly employed for blast furnace charg- ing purposes. Experimental charge materials used in the study were glass ballotin.i (1-4mm dia.) and sinter fines (0.25-4mm). The tracer material employed consisted of coloured glass beads. The results of the study show that the discharge stream from a Paul Wurth hopper is characterised by an initial negative segregation followed by a positive segregation and that this segregation pattern is a property of the hopper geometry and the filling conditions. A simple computer model based on experimental tracer concentration results is proposed. The measured segregation results and those predicted by the model show close agreement. Application of the results with special reference to the effect of size segregation on charge permeability in blast furnaces is also included.

Recent exploration has established depos its of nickel sulphide in several areas of Western Australia. To assist in their develop- ment Amdel has investigated the beneficiation of many samples from these deposits and has estab- lished flowsheets for the recovery of nickel values by flotation. Metallurgical data are presented for the samples according to four factors which were encountered in their respective treatments.

Difficult ground conditions have plagued the underground operations at Mount Windarra since mining started in 1974.The ore at Mount Windarra consists of seven vertically dipping, sub vertically plunging ore shoots. The ore zone in which the shoots lie is characterised by moderate to heavy cleavage and the presence of serpentanite. The ore is known to extend to 1100 metres below surface.Long hole open stoping under cover of backfill has been used as the primary mining method at the mine, but its poor performance brought the mine near to closure in 1984. The mine had been closed from 1979 to 1980.

Geometallurgy is inherently multidisciplinary and it gains its power to deliver improved outcomes for the minerals industry by bridging silos between disciplines. This cross-disciplinary approach unlocks value, identifies (and avoids) value destruction and provides a pathway to better implementation of an energy efficient and sustainable minerals industry. Despite this promise, we argue that the cross disciplinary approach also represents the greatest threat to the success of geometallurgy. Some key cross disciplinary issues identified are:Geometallurgy has so far evolved in the technical sphere, mainly by collaborations of geologists and metallurgists. Consequently, in many cases the business dimensions and value have not been incorporated. Financial and risk evaluation viewpoints need to be assimilated into the geometallurgical paradigm. In fact, until such measures are integrated into practices, the value cannot be fully demonstrated.The historical and current efforts on geometallurgy have been highly focused on improved sampling and measurement of geometallurgical properties or appropriate proxies. This work has been driven by professional and academic geologists and metallurgical engineers. It is notable that mining engineers (who are critical in the value delivery of geometallurgy through changed planning approaches) have so far been at the margins, or absent. The construction of valid three dimensional (3D) geometallurgical models raises some important organisational, mathematical and geostatistical considerations. The enhancement of resource models to account for geometallurgical aspects must be managed carefully if the full value of geometallurgical thinking is to be realised.The use of 3D geometallurgical models to change business decision making and practices is the real nub of the problem. We believe sophisticated scenario based evaluation methods are required if the potential impacts of spatial rock properties on processes further down the mining value chain are to be realistically evaluated. Such changed practices require ‘whole of value chain thinking’ to embed this change into the business in an ongoing way.Because profitable geometallurgy demands changed approaches to business decision-making and also organisation of the firm (radically changed in some cases), the senior executive viewpoint must be incorporated into the language and thinking of geometallurgy. This is unavoidable if the establishment of a geometallurgical approach to project evaluation, development and operation is to be successful and sustained.A powerful analogy for the problem faced by geometallurgy is the transformation of safety culture in the mining industry in the past 20 years. We argue that, as in the safety revolution, explicit models, cultural change and management of the ‘soft’ dimensions of the problem are pivotal to success of geometallurgy. In light of this, we propose a model (‘the Geomet Curve’) that gives a framework and pathway for geometallurgy in seven steps. The implications of this model for technical and organisational steps required at different stages are discussed.

The decrepitation technique is a rapid means of measuring abundances, temperatures and to some extent the fluid compositions, of fluid inclusions in transparent and opaque minerals. The method has been used to investigate the hydrothermal fluid systems associated with gold mineralisation in the Tennant Creek, Pine Creek and Halls Creek Goldfields. At the Enterprise Mine, Pine Creek, several different stages of quartz veining are distinguished and within these, gradational changes in fluid temperatures and compositions help to define the centre and nature of the thermal system responsible for the mineralisation. In the surrounding Pine Creek region and at Tennant Creek and Halls Creek, the results were applied on a regional scale to characterize outcrops and aid in the discrimination between potentially mineral- ized and barren outcrops. The decrepitation method involves the heating of a small (lgm) sample of crushed and sized grains up to as high as 800 degrees celsius. During the heating the fluid inclu- sions within the grains develop sufficient internal pressure to physically burst, the temperature of such bursting being dependent on the type of fluid and the prevailing tem- perature at the time the inclusion was originally trapped. The resulting tabulation of the number of inclusion bursts per 10 degree temperature interval is plotted as a histogram of decrepitations versus tempera- ture and called a decrepigram. The decrepi- grams frequently show several distinct peaks at different temperatures which are caused by different populations of inclusions in the sample. The areas of the peaks indicate the abundances of inclusions in each population while the shape and mean temperature of the peak provides a guide to the type of fluids involved. Of particular importance in this study is the presence of decrepitation peaks at fairly low temperatures (around 2000 C. These are characteristic of C02 rich fluids which build up internal pressure very quickly when heated. The Enterprise Gold Mine at Pine Creek comprises a number of overlapping quartz vein systems hosted by Burrell Creek Formation sediments. The geology of this mine has been described at this conference by Dann and Delaney, who have defined several distinct stages of quartz veining based on structural, mineralogical and physical features of the veins. For this decrepitation study, 19 quartz samples from the mine and environs, including some from each stage of veining were collected. These results suggest that there are 4 major vein types, within 3 of which additional small variations can be discerned which are due to gradational changes in the temperatures and fluid compositions in the mine area.

The Oregon-Idaho graben evolved after widespread Uwleiitic flood basalt volcanism associated with the arrival of the plume head of the Yellowstone hotspot beneath southeastern Oregon approximately 17-16 Ma. The north- to north- northeast-trending, 50 km-wide graben evolved between 15.5 and 10.5 Ma during east-west extension. The graben is part of a middle Miocene back-arc rift (1,100 km long) that includes the northern Nevada rift, the Baker and LaGrande grabens, and the Chief Joseph dike swarm of the Columbia River Basalt Group. The graben ceased to be a volcano- tectonic depression as the cross-cutting western Snake River plain began to evolve at approximately 10.5 Ma.

For over 50 years R W Miller & Co Pty Ltd operated old coal properties abandoned by former owners as uneconomic, some of which dated back to the last century. The companyÆs ability to survive with what were relatively poor quality coal resources required a small efficient management organisation. In 1970 R W Miller was involved in negotiations with other coal companies through coal sales contracts to develop private coal areas under the provisions of the old Coal Mining Act (1906) and these efforts led to the development of Lemington colliery. At the same time development of the Ironbark colliery holding near Newcastle commenced. In 1971, R W Miller approached the New South Wales Government for a resource replacement area to prospect for coal in the Upper Hunter Valley. Authorisation No 33 was finally granted on 30 September 1975, but the company found the area was inaccessible as most of the surface was owned by the Australian Army. Later R W Miller was granted Authorisation 66 of 2167.5 hectares at Mount Thorley near Singleton on 1 November 1976. The development of this coal mining project coincided with the second OPEC oil crisis in 1978 and a short-term boom for coal resources and the unrealistic expectations generated by the boom. This paper gives a broad outline of the development of the Mount Thorley project between 1976 to 1986 including the feasibility study and the many governmental and industrial delays that resulted in a three-year time overrun in the project development period.

The key elements required to maintain final wall integrity and hence slope reliability are discussed. Failure modes and mechanisms in highly structured rock slopes are then reviewed. The impact of blast disturbance on rock masses in general is discussed and the relationships between the slope failure mode and blast disturbance is then explored. The question of how designers can incorporate such impacts into the slope design process is then addressed. This necessarily involves rock mass strength consideration and two case studies are used to demonstrate a recent dilemma in this regard. Some progress regarding this dilemma has also been reported for the second case study. The major conclusions are that: Slope reliability can be severely compromised if the slopes are damaged by blasting and this impact is not often incorporated into the slope design process. The location and extent of the blast damage will impact some slope failure geometries and failure mechanisms more than others. The concept of failure mechanism specific vulnerability needs to be further developed. The evidence indicates that this aspect is even more extreme for weak ground conditions. The quantification of the reduction in rock mass strength due to blast damage is not well understood and limitations exist with some recent guidelines. The use of the Hoek-Brown criterion for slopes in blocky rock masses requires considerable judgement. Further applied developments in this regard would be very beneficial to the industry. Some promising methods to incorporate blast damage estimates into the slope design process are emerging. It is good business to minimise final wall blast damage otherwise a whole range of issues relating to reduced slope reliability emerge.

PISCES - the Planning and Information System for Coal Export Services has been developed by Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) to ensure the efficient and economic operation of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain. PISCES is a computer based integrated information and management system to coordinate operations commencing at minesites through the coal chain to shiploading at the Port. The PISCES system comprises a central database around which a number of planning modules interact. These include interactive programs for train planning and timetabling, stockpile management, berthing analysis and a coal shippers enquiry system. PWCS has previously developed - number of computer based systems for planning, controlling and monitoring complex coal handling operations and the extension of the PISCES system to the Hunter Valley Coal Chain is another initiative to assist the Hunter Valley Coal Export Industry in looking confidently towards the Future.

This study represents a part of comprehensive research aimed at integrating nickel into a thermodynamic database constantly developed at Pyrosearch. The behaviour of Ni in calcium-ferrite slags is considered. An integrated approach combining experimental and thermodynamic modelling methods has been employed to predict phase equilibria in the NiO-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system under oxidising conditions and in equilibrium with the metal FeNi phase. The compositions of liquid slags and coexisting solid solutions have been determined through the analysis of equilibrated and quenched samples by electron probe microanalysis technique (EPMA). The research results are presented in the form of liquidus projections on the corresponding phase diagrams, considering both oxidising and reducing conditions. The solubility of Ni in spinel, dicalcium ferrite and calcium oxide as well as solubility of Fe and Ca in Ni monoxide, have been examined under several atmospheric conditions. Additionally, the compositions of the NiO-FeO monoxide in equilibrium with metal phase have been studied. The experimental data not only support the outcomes of thermodynamic modelling but also validate the parameters of the applied thermodynamic models, thus confirming the reliability and accuracy of the integrated approach.
