During September 2000, Nabalco management identified the need for a corporate system to deliver its key performance indicators (KPIs). In June 2001, a need was also identified to replace the existing metallurgical accounting system. After a review of the technologies available, the decision was made to develop the systems in-house, in preference to purchasing commercial software packages. This would allow much greater control over the structure, and provide for an iterative, concurrent development process between software and key business developers. This has proven invaluable in the development process. The purpose of the KPI system is to provide a unified reporting tool for all performance indicators. These indicators include production, safety, health and environment, personnel, costs, continuous improvement initiatives and opportunity losses. All of these disparate measurements are brought together into the KPI system and used to determine the performance for each department or area. The general principles of the balanced scorecard business approach (Kaplan and Norton, 1996) are applied to achieve a performance measurement for each area within Nabalco. The new metallurgical accounting system (MA) is a SQLServer database with web page and Excel interfaces. The database is structured around daily inputs of all measurements and calculations. The data is stored and adjustments and reconciliations can be made to this data as required. The focus is on accounting rigour, with all adjustments recorded in the database to allow for full auditing. The structure of the data focuses on the five input/output streams (bauxite in, caustic soda in, fuel oil in, residue out, and alumina out). In-circuit inventory provides a secondary measurement on which to check and calibrate the MA system. The KPI and MA systems were developed using Web technologies and are available to any internet-enabled device with Internet Explorer installed. This removes the need for software rollouts and user training. This will promote the wide use of the systems throughout Nabalco and Alcan.

This paper presents an overview of the researches carried out in our laboratory on the application of plasma in recovery of alloy elements from waste slags and the treatment of lean ores, which are examples of advanced materials processing. After briefly reviewing the early work on the reduction of nickel, chromium, manganese, vanadium and titanium oxides, and a short investigation of the reduction of titanium oxide from the slag resulting from the blast furnace smelting of a titanomagnetite ore, the paper concentrates on the more recent studies on the reduction of an Australian scheelite. In some of these experiments, aluminium was used in addition to carbon as a reductant, in virtually all cases complete reduction was achieved within a relatively few minutes even with carbon alone during plasma processing. It therefore appears that this technique provides a possible processing route to facilitate the recovery of valuable alloying elements from non-traditional sources, or to permit process step elimination.

Recent decades have seen significant advancements in analytical and experimental techniques, thermodynamic theory, and computational capabilities in high temperature research which are particularly timely to address the challenges of increasingly complex and variable feedstocks in both primary and secondary pyrometallurgical processes, the need to optimise and improve them. Currently a research program is in progress on the development of the 20-component multi-phase thermodynamic database for pyrometallurgical smelting, refining and recycling systems describing thermodynamics and phase equilibria of molten slag, matte, speiss, salts, alloys and associated solids. The integrated experimental and modelling program has been supported for nearly two decades by several consortia of 14 major international companies with over 30 operations around the world, integrates many components, incorporates many in-house developments, and brings together many different groups of professionals of different levels from junior and mid-career to senior from both industry and university sectors. The aims of the paper are:  to outline the many components and issues of the overall program including analytical, experimental and thermodynamic modelling research as well as implementation of the results in industrial practice, professional education, planning and organisation issues.  to highlight the opportunities, challenges, and possible solutions.  to present these to all different groups of professionals involved in the current program.  and thus, importantly, to facilitate possible future further developments and collaborations in the field of phase equilibria and thermodynamics of complex high-temperature systems.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

A survey of leaching systems for the dissolution of gold has been undertaken and their advantages and disadvantages evaluated both from their effectiveness at leaching and their compatibility with carbon- in-pulp (CIP) and resin-in-pulp recovery. In the near future it is almost certain that cyanidation in some form will remain the leaching system of.choice although economic and environmental pressures could see the introduction of other leaching systems particularly for treating refractory gold ores. The most likely alternative leaching systems appear to be acid chlorine, acid thiourea and ammoniacal thiosulphate. INTRODUCTION High grade reserves of readily recoverable gold ores are gradually being depleted which, inevitably, must create a greater awareness amongst gold producers, of the efficiency and, in some cases, the suitability of present day metallurgical processes for treating low grade, complex and refractory deposits. One of the key steps in the extraction of gold is the dissolution of the metal using chemical reagents which, ideally, should be cheap or recyclable, selective, non-toxic and compatible with down-stream recovery processes. In practice, meeting all these critera is difficult - if not impossible - particularly in view of the stringent environmental impact requirements which must be met Nowadays.

The Mogalakwena Platinum Mine in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex is Anglo American PlatinumÆs only open cast operation exploiting the Platreef. The Platreef, which extends along the basal contact of the Bushveld Complex, is geologically and mineralogically a much more complex orebody than the Merensky and UG-2 reefs. Changes in the footwall and the genesis of the Platreef translate into a number of rock types being present. These rock types vary in hardness and recovery potential and present challenges to metallurgical staff trying to optimise the concentrator. A true understanding of the implications of treating these rock types is required if the maximum value from this orebody is to be obtained.In order to more accurately forecast production and incorporate ore variation in the mine plan and comminution and flotation circuits, a geometallurgical approach to managing the operation has been used and is being further developed.CITATION:Schouwstra, R, De Vaux, D, Muzondo, T and Prins, C, 2013. The authors have presented their ideas for developing a powder sampling device in the I-Corps™ program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is an intensive customer discovery program developed to increase the economic impact of the research sponsored by NSF.The I-Corps™ program requires performing at least 100 interviews with potential customers in various industries. These interviews are essential to establish the need for a particular product or solution, and identify potential commercialisation partners and competition. The interviews have revealed the absence of Theory of Sampling (TOS) principles in many companies. The interviews are designed to identify the difficulties associated with current sampling practices that do not meet TOS principles.The I-Corps™ program is a significant challenge for scientists who often avoid discussing a concept in fear of losing their research idea. The program teaches how to obtain information without releasing the important intellectual property related to a product development idea. The I-Corps™ methods have been used to discover the prevailing ideas on sampling in various industries.I-Corps™ also teaches how to present ideas to investors; another significant challenge for a scientist. The mining industry faces numerous challenges related to sustainability and circular economy principles, necessitating strategic approaches to innovation and resource management. As demands for mineral resources continue to rise, mining companies are under increasing pressure to address environmental impacts, minimise waste generation, and optimise resource utilisation. These challenges underscore the importance of Research and Development (R&D) roadmaps as strategic tools for guiding innovation and sustainability efforts within the sector (Jochen Berbner, 2022). A design-led methodology offers a structured approach to R&D roadmap development, emphasising stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and alignment with industry objectives. By leveraging design principles, mining companies can ensure that their R&D initiatives are responsive to evolving challenges and opportunities, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Against this backdrop, the project aims to address the pressing challenges associated with sustainability and circular economy in the mining industry. Through the development of R&D roadmaps and the application of a design-led methodology, the project seeks to identify innovative solutions for enhancing resource efficiency, minimising environmental impacts, and promoting sustainable practices within mining operations. This paper highlights the collaborative efforts among Isle, the mining industry, and water utilities, which have yielded tangible benefits. The study demonstrates how the outcomes from the roadmaps outlined below effectively align research with strategic objectives, fostering innovation to address pressing challenges.

The Kiirunavaara apatite-magnetite orebody is about 4 km long and approximately 100 m thick sheet-like body, which lies roughly in a north-south direction and dips from the horizontal plane along its entire length, in towards the town of Kiruna. The origin of this orebody has been a matter of controversy, with both magmatic and hydrothermal origins proposed. Traditionally and for practical purposes this rich apatite-magnetite ore has been divided into two main types: low phosphorous ore (B-ore) and high phosphorous ore (D-ore). Further the low phosphorous ore is divided into the low alkali (B1) and the high alkali (B2) ore.

Mining cycles have come and gone and with them there have been dramatic swings in the levels of interest and student entry into minerals-related education programs, hence graduate supply to the industry. So what is the problem? These trends will keep happening and the industry will keep on keeping on – or will it?This paper discusses recent trends in Australian minerals education programs and some international examples, together with some of the more recent initiatives taken by both the minerals education sector and the industry, such as the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) and MEA. The real problem is that things will not just keep going the way they have over recent decades – there will come a time when there is no longer a supply of minerals academics available to provide the educational programs; and universities will simply shut down subcritical mass mining programs and invest in the much more lucrative programs such as commerce, law, medicine, etc. By the time this starts to happen it will be at least ten years too late for any last-minute reactive response by industry, if they were to try and avert such a consequence. International experience with mining programs bears out this scenario quite clearly.It is therefore timely for industry individual mines and mine management to take a much more strategic look at their role in the education sector. Sustainable mining also means sustainable minerals education – without one, the other will not function over the long-term. There is a pressing need for long-term strategic buy-in by industry into the education sector – not just for the good times, but also through the tough times. This means much more than a scholarship here or there, but includes such commitments as major industry-university research partnerships; collaborative recruitment initiatives and much more. The paper will discuss a range of such issues, problems and opportunities to address these important issues through strategic, comprehensive, long-term commitments by industry and equally significant and appropriate responses by the education sector. The computing needs of a mine planning office vary greatly depending on the staff available and the nature of the work undertaken. Some offices work acceptably with few aids apart from hand held calculators while others use mainframe computers with associated data bases and sophisticated mine planning software. Not every mine planning office requires the big system approach but all can benefit from the intelligent use of small computers. There is virtually no limit to the design problems which can be solved using modern desktop computers. The simple language required encourages engineers to work interactively to facilitate both large and small computations. However a limit does exist in the speed and ease with which solutions can be obtained. The important ingredients for the successful application of such machines are a little computing knowledge, a flexible machine, and an engineer who really understands the mining problems confronting him. If these are available it is possible for the engineer to tailor the program to the task at hand and efficiently achieve the required result.

The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise of two-lane tunnel boring machines (TBM) driven tunnels. The length of the TBM tunnel section is approximately 4.2 km. The TBMs employed are double shield TBMs. Typical support to the segment ring while advancing a double shield TBM comprises of filling the excavated annulus between the ground and the segmental lining by injecting pea gravel, followed with primary grouting to fill between the pea gravel some distance behind the excavated face. The methodology adopted for the Legacy Way project, however, did not follow this typical approach, instead, two component grouting of the annulus was carried out.Where the annulus is typically filled with pea gravel, support is provided to the segment ring very close to the end of the tail shield, whereas in the case of two component grout this is not practical as the risk of grouting in the tail shield is high. The staging of the two component grout injection, the grout early age strength properties become key issues in ensuring that the segment ring leaving the TBM tail shield is stable and can support the necessary external loads.Two-component grout is a grout with two components, cementitious grout (component A) and accelerator (component B), commonly adopted for earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM. The grout reaches its thixotropic state in a matter of seconds providing initial support for the segment rings. Manual injection of two component grout to fill the bore annulus was carried out in stages leaving a portion of the segment rings unsupported. Ring stability during TBM advance was provided by a combination of ram thrust and the segment circumferential joint shear connectors.This paper outlines the design considerations such as rock load derivation by probabilistic analysis carried out utilising the software JBlock, 3D finite element analyses using the software Strand7 for ring stability and the testing and back analysis of the shear connector load bearing behaviour. "The current economic challenges faced by the mining industry led to a review of options for reducing the cost of ventilation control devices (VCDs). The VCDs at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland typically experienced significant damage on the operating levels and required expensive replacements. Ventilation controls can become damaged by the effects of stope firings. This paper discusses the nature of blast wave effects, giving consideration to distance from the firing and changes in mine geometry. The time taken to adjust the airflow on the operating levels with the current VCDs resulted in the loss of productivity opportunities. The mine site engaged an equipment supplier to collaborate on the development of a high-strength regulator to control the required airflows within its underground workings.The strengthened regulator proved to be cost-effective and provided additional benefits, including ease of use, simplicity of installation and speed of change in the control of available ventilating airflow. An added advantage of the re-engineered regulator compared to contemporary VCDs is its flexibility, which includes the ability to easily move mobile equipment into different ventilation districts where required without the need to remove the VCD from its location. Mining is currently undergoing a progressive expansion into novel environments (such as the deep ocean), commodities (such as tantalum, rare earths, and other ‘green economy minerals’), and new methods (such as the autonomous underwater cutting machines required to operate in the deep ocean environment, or the use of expanding grouts to deliver a blast-free mining method). The advent of novel mining, environments and commodities heralds an era that will undoubtedly start with much discomfort on the part of regulators and stakeholders, due to a feeling of overwhelming uncertainty. These proposed mining scenarios have few precedents, few examples of successful implementation, short baseline monitoring periods, and few examples of legacy sites that may assist with understanding long term risk and exposure. The evolution of the environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) process in many regulatory environments recognises stakeholder engagement in a formal and facilitated manner. This is a positive step, and allows stakeholders to be much more meaningfully involved in the permitting process than they historically were. However, with this advance comes the challenge of identifying and communicating with stakeholders; sharing information in a meaningful way, fostering relationships with what can be an extremely large group, and delivering on commitments that inspire confidence to permit operations that have never been permitted before. In order to meet this challenge, it is suggested that changes to collection of data, communication of data, the nature of commitments, and the reporting of performance need to be made in order to effectively communicate management of new technologies, and the impacts that mining may have in new environments (such as the deep ocean). The communication challenge is necessarily greater when describing technology that has never been used, or environments that have never previously been accessed by humans on an industrial scale. Elimination of zinc by the reduction of iron works dusts is examined. The process consists of blending, filtration, drying, balling, preheating and reduction in the rotary kiln. Dust slurries and dry dusts are mixed and stored in slurry basins and the blended slurry is filtered. In the balling process it is important to make green pellets which will withstand Thermal shock in the preheater and rotary kiln. Preheating to about 2000C is preferred to ensure effective use of coke fines in the blast furnace dust. The coke retained in the pellets accelerates the reduction rate. However, at the initial stage of the reduction the pellets become weakened and have to be heated slowly to prevent ring formation. In order to ensure zinc vaporization, pellets should be heated to a temperature of 1100-11500C in the kiln with injection of l ignite fines from the discharge end. Pellets having a degree of metallization of more than 90% and containing less than 0. 1% zinc have been obtained using a test kiln. The final pellet product is intended for use as blast furnace feed. A new plant with a capacity of 20, 000 tonne of dust per month is now under construct- ion and will be in operation next year.

Blasting operations play a pivotal role in the overall economics of opencast mines. The blasting subsystem affects all the other associated subsystems, ie loading, transport, crushing and milling operations. Fragmentation control through effective blast design and its effect on productivity is a challenging job for the practicing blasting engineer due to inadequate knowledge of actual explosive energy released in the borehole, effect of varying initiation practice in blast design and its effect on explosive energy release characteristic. This paper describes the result of a systematic study on the impact of blast design parameters on rock fragmentation at two mines in India. Both the mines use draglines and shovel-dumper combination for removal of overburden. Despite its pivotal role in controlling the overall economics of a mining operation, the expected blasting performance is often judged almost exclusively on the basis of poorly defined parameters such as powder factor and is often qualitative, which results in a very subjective assessment of blasting performance. Such an approach is a very poor substitute for accurate assessment of explosive and blasting performance. Forty-seven blasts were conducted with varying blast designs and charging patterns and their impact on the rock fragmentation are documented. A high-speed camera was deployed to record the detonation sequences of the blasts. Long Shaft was initially developed using a rail haulage system on every working level comprising battery electric locomotives and granby trucks loaded by rail mounted rocker shovels. Production was commenced using conventional hand held cut and fill mining methods. In an effort to improve productivity and reduce operating costs a mechanised cut and fill stoping method evolved to suit the wider sections of the orebody. To further improve productivity and reduce costs the mechanised levels of the mine are progressively being redeveloped to enable the use of trackless diesel haulage equipment. An added benefit of trackless haulage equipment will be the ability to place development mullock into stopes as Fill.
