The proposed underground mine at Porgera forms an integral part of the Porgera Joint Venture project in Enga Province in the remote Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The total in-situ reserves are approaching 400 tonnes of gold making the Porgera deposit one of the largest in the world. The remote, rugged and inhospitable terrain, recent unstable geological environment and primitive yet socially complex nature of the densely populated local community, combine to make the Porgera project very different to developing mines in Australia. The Porgera project is a challenging and exciting mining exploration venture in the final stages of feasibility study submission and negotiations with the National Government of Papua New Guinea. A 1476 m exploration adit was driven in the footwall of the high grade mineralisation for diamond drilling purposes as part of the evaluations necessary for the feasibility study. Ground conditions encountered have ranged from weak mudstones with high water content, requiring immediate steel set support, to competent intrusives.

Mining and metallurgy are more capital intensive than all other industry in Australia. Capital demands are met by domestic and foreign sources of finance for whom the major constraints are the supply of funds and factors of risk and uncertainty. in both mineral development and institutional financing policies, specific options are available to administrators which would allow mining to benefit from a more reliable supply of capital. The strength of major partners involved and overseas participation are important aspects of financing mineral developments. Future changes in financing for the mineral industry are considered most likely in variable interest rate funding, in the leasing of major plant items, and in the development of flexible techniques to ease the burden of infrastructure costs. In a consultancy sense, financiers are available to mining to assist with and to advise on optimal develop- ment of mineral industry projects.

Designing post-mining landscapes requires quantifying the short and long-term risks. In recent years, computer based landscape evolution models (LEMs) have been used to provide insight into both erosion rates and processes (i.e. sheetwash, rill, gully erosion). An important requirement of these models is high quality model input parameter data, which includes both the surface material (i.e. soil and waste rock) and climate information. However, in many cases such data is limited and in the case of climate information, the data is often short and incomplete. Here we develop climate scenarios and examine different surface material properties using a case study at the ERA Ranger mine located in the Northern Territory, Australia Firstly we develop scenarios that represent the range of future climates that may be experienced at the site. Secondly we develop a series of plausible particle size distributions based on a large sampling exercise of the waste rock material. We then test the sensitivity of different rainfall sequences and surface materials on sediment output using a well-tested landscape evolution and sediment transport model (Hancock et al., 2017). To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

In most underground mines, the ventilation system is a significant portion of the total mine capital and operating cost and the largest consumer of underground electrical power. The effectiveness of the ventilation system has a major bearing on the safety, health, comfort and morale of underground personnel, and has a critical role in meeting production targets and therefore business revenue. Perhaps the most important component of the primary ventilation system is the primary fan. Correct performance testing of the primary fan during the warranty period is important not only to ensure the mine has obtained the asset that it paid for and can therefore deliver on the fanÆs crucial safety and economic role in the future of the mine, and to provide a justification for releasing final performance warranty payments to the supplier, but also to provide a benchmark or baseline against which to assess future performance issues. As there are at least three potential international standards available to measure fan performance, there has been considerable confusion regarding which of these to use for testing primary mine fans, and also the correct allowances and tolerances to use. This paper provides guidance on which standards to use for different applications, how the standards should be interpreted, what allowances and tolerances are reasonable, and other important issues to be resolved with the fan supplier prior to making a contract award. Most orebodies have cross-sections of less than I km2 and hence do not offer a particularly large target for exploration. Fortunately, although in the geological record ore deposits are small and rare and result from the exceptional coincidence of certain geological processes, these processes are mappable on a much larger, district to regional scale and constitute a mineral system in which the ore deposit is the central feature. A mineral system can therefore be defmed as 'all geological factors that control the generation and preservation of mineral deposits, and stress the processes that are involved in mobilising ore components from a source, transporting and accumulating them in more concentrated form and then preserving them throughout the subsequent geological history'. The mineral system concept emphasises that for many ore deposit types, although economically viable mineralisation may only occur on a scale of say, hundreds of metres, the total system offluid-rock interactions that led to ore formation can extend over a distance of tens to hundreds of kilometres around the deposit. When mapped out, the total mineral system provides a far larger exploration target than the actual ore deposit itself. Important geological factors defining the characteristics of any mineralising system include: I. sources ofthe mineralising fluids and transporting ligands; 2. sources ofthe metals and other ore components; 3. migration pathway; 4. thermal gradient; 5. energy source; 6. a mechanical and structural focusing mechanism at the trap site; 7. chemical and/or physical traps for ore precipitation. This paper reviews hydrometallurgical processing technology for refractory gold ores, which form an increasing resource stock for gold. The reasons fQr ore refractoriness and pressure, chemical and biooxidation process options are briefly listed. Electrochemical technology, suitable for processing refractory ore is reviewed and some preliminary results for the electrochemical oxidation of slurried arsenopyrite are given.

THE Sulphide Corporation's works for the smelting of ores containing lead, gold, and silver are situated close to the Cockle Creek railway station, on the main Northern railway line, and are about 95 miles from Sydney and 10 miles from Newcastle. A branch line runs to the works, and siding accommodation and bins are provided for expeditiously handling all ores sent for treatment. The Corporation also possesses wharfage facilities at the port of Newcastle, where consignments of ores arriving by sea can be handled direct into railway trucks for conveyance to the works.The greater portion of the ore treated at Cockle Creek comes from the Corporation's mine at Broken Hill, but a large quantity of other grades is also purchased and treated.

From statistics on general and electrical fatalities in the Australian mineral industry, it could be said that the present approach to industrial safety is irrational. Deaths are few and decreasing in number, yet spend- ing on occupational safety is large and increasing. State mine safety inspec- torates are being expanded and a National Occupational Health and Safety Commission was recently established. Recent data are analysed in the paper and mining industry fatalities placed in perspective with deaths in other areas. Cost effectiveness of different strategies is discussed along with social implications. Strategies found successful are described and others suggested.,

Flash smelting of nickel sulphide concentrate has been practiced at WMC's Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter for 20 years. The mineralogy of the concentrate from the original mines was particularly suited to this process. However, taking a strategic view, potential new processing routes should be fully evaluated as possible replacements for the current technology. The Vanyukov process has been under development in Russia for the past 40 years and has been successfully applied on a large scale to the smelting of copper concentrates, at two locations - Norilsk and Balkhash. The potential for the application of the Vanyukov process to the smelting of nickel concentrates offers a number of processing advantages, including smaller reactor and decreased dependence on fuel oil. This paper reports on preliminary investigations into the application of the Vanyukov process to the smelting of nickel concentrates. At this stage the investigations are limited to semi-quantitative comparisons and modelling studies.

The Waterview Connection will provide a high-quality strategic alternative to State Highway One and complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route connecting State Highways 20 and 16. The project includes twin three-lane motorway tunnels 2.4 km long and 13.1 m internal diameter (ID). The tunnel construction started in November 2013 using the tenth largest earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world. The tunnels will pass beneath urban and greenfield areas as well as a major local arterial road. The project is being delivered by an alliance of constructors, designers and the New Zealand Transport Agency. This paper describes some of the key innovative and cost saving design solutions that have been achieved through collaboration in the alliance environment with the construction team, owner’s verifier, the segmental lining precast suballiance and the M&E suballiance for the underground works. The key design elements of the tunnel comprise a three-lane roadway, invert culvert and backfill, precast segmental lining, sixteen mined cross passages including a low point sump cross passage and steel segments for opening to the cross passages. This paper reviews interdisciplinary design integration and the economies achieved in the permanent works tunnel lining design, including reduction in lining thickness and optimising reinforcement, cross passage separation of 150 m, efficient design of the invert culvert and backfill design, main drainage pipe and low point sump. Conventionally, a combined system consist- ing of a dry or wet pulverizer and kneading mac- hine is applied to the pretreatment of fine mat- erials for agglomeration, especially for pellet- izing. However, treatment cannot be expected to be satisfactory owing to the complexities of the process. A new process was developed to over- come the defects inherent in the conventional process. This new process treats certain fine materials having a moisture content somewhat lower than that suitable for pelletizing in a ball or rod mill. The mill is of special de- sign in which grinding and strong kneading are performed to give an extremely homogeneous ball- ing material with appropriate size distribution and pelletizing characteristics. The most serious problem in this process is the choking of sticky materials in the mill. A specially designed rubber lining was installed in the mill to overcome this trouble. This paper presents actual results from our iron ore pelletizing plant relating to the pelletization of other fine materials.

Every land oriented decision effects what we see and the value in pursuing visual excellence is supported by informed opinion, widespread community interest and evidence of cost- effectiveness.By knowing how we perceive the landscape and then changing or conserving it we can assist in fostering a positive mental image of a countyside which is welcomed by the local and regional community.It is useful to examine key design elements and the value we place on visual impressions in relation to three significant SECV rehabilitation projects, at Loy Yang, Newport and Morwell Open Cut.

The theory of sampling (TOS), and therefore representative sampling, is based on three fundamental principles: sample correctness, which handles the search for non-bias; segregation, the effects of which must be eliminated or minimised; and variance control to help achieve the desired reproducibility. After briefly reviewing these very few, albeit essential first principles of Gy’s TOS, the state-of-the-art in TOS is examined through the prism of these principles and the prospects for the future are explored, with suggestions for further research where relevant. Regarding segregation, which is currently the focus of much research, new orientations are proposed. A short discussion of the salient aspects of a dispersed flow model in relation to the gas flow in blast furnaces is given. The use of the theory in assessing vessel performance is mentioned. Tracer results of a blast furnace (688 m3) from three furnace levels and different radial positions are analysed and results presented as D/ud values. The significance of the shapes of experimental tracer curves are included and comparison is made with results obtained on other furnaces.

Surface mining activities disturb large areas, produce great sediment loads and tend to be a source of water pollution if they are not managed properly. Coal mining in Indonesia has a very high risk of soil erosion because the coal mining areas are generally located in tropical areas with a high average of rainfall (4000 - 6000 mm/year) and use surface mining methods. The main factors affecting erosion risk are climate, soil type, topography, vegetation cover and management factors. Thus, the monitoring of erosion risk in mining areas is very important due to the characteristics of coal mining in Indonesia. The objective of this research is to determine the ability of satellite images (remote sensing data) and geographic information systems (GIS) to provide an accurate and up to date spatial database for the monitoring of erosion risk in surface coal mining areas using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) method.The erosion risk analysis and spatial data processing are generated by the ArcGIS 9.3 software and need several data, namely: an erosivity map, erodibility map, a slope map, vegetation index map and land management or land cover map. The erosivity map is derived from the rainfall data, whereas the erodibility map is derived from the soil map. The slope map is derived from the SRTM-DEM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-Digital Elevation Model) and processed using 3D analyst tools. Furthermore, the vegetation index map and land cover map are derived from a satellite image using digital image processing techniques.This preliminary study produced results that show soil erosion monitoring, which is integrated with remote sensing and GIS technologies, has great potential for producing accurate, advance, and low cost erosion risk maps in coal mining areas. This map is very important for getting spatial distributions of the erosion and useful for developing erosion management plans.

The Permo-Triassic Bowen Basin developed during the final stages of the Tasman Orogenic Phase in eastern Australia. The basin has considerable economic value as a source of coal, natural gas and precious metals. The basin, which is of controversial origin, is preserved as a north-south trending, asymmetrical syncline bounded in places by faults. It is here interpreted as a retroarc foreland basin which developed on the landward (west) side of a continental arc associated with continent-ocean plate convergence. Initiation of the basin occurred via back-arc extension in Early Permian times, coincident with a phase of talc-alkaline arc volcanism. Early Permian, mostly marine sedimentation gave away to extensive coastal and alluvial plain depositional systems in Late Permian times, coincident with a resurgence of arc volcanism. Triassic sedimentation was almost entirely alluvial and coeval with westward propagation of thrust sheets from the eastern basin margin. Compressive tectonics climaxed in Middle to Late Triassic times, terminating sediment accumulation and uplifting the entire area.

Several methods are available for inspections of mine shafts. These involve use of inclinometers, moving beams, inertial platforms and decelerometers. Inspections which use decelerometers are of most interest since they allow assessment of conditions of shaft steelwork, conveyances and the shaft itself. This assessment is based on recording and analysing dynamic behaviour of shaft conveyances. Sample inspections of several WA shafts confirm feasibility of using this method for periodic shaft Inspections.
