The aim of this paper is to present a concept or model regarding a particular geological environment where gold orebodies occur in the Pine Creek Geosyncline and indeed in many other pans of the world. The name GIGIACS (an acronym for Gold In Greywacke In Anticlinal CrestS) is proposed to label this concept or model. The name Saddle Reefs (which has been in use for many years) is used for gold-bearing quartz veins which often occur in conjunction with Gigiacs. Simple patterns formed by this type of mineralisation at the surface due to different configurations are illustrated. Some examples of Gigiacs and associated saddle reefs are presented from the Pine Creek Geosyncline together with examples from other parts of the world. This concept has been used successfully as an exploration tool and five examples are given. The terms Gicsiacs (for Gold In Carbonaceous Shale In Anticlinal CrestS) and Giliacs (for Gold In Limestone In Anticlinal CrestS) are also used.

The major slime forming minerals in coal seams are generally montmorillonite, illite and kaolinite, and due to the consistant trend to full seam mechanisation in New South Wales and Queensland these minerals remain in the feed to a coal preparation plant. After coming into contact with water their size degradation is very rapid, and therefore they mostly report to the fine coal cleaning section of the plant. Froth flotation, being the most effective method of beneficiating fine coal, is widely practised in these two major coal producing states of Australia. Plant experience and laboratory tests suggest that the presence of these slimes in the flotation circuit depresses the flotation of fine coal. Although the deleterious effects of slimes on the flotation behaviour of minerals is well known, the mode of their adsorption at the mineral surface has been a subject of controversy for some time. In this paper, on the basis of the surface properties of slime forming minerals and coal, a model has been put forward to explain the adsorption of slimes at the coal surface. The degree of slime coating has been examined by scanning electron microscopy. Laboratory tests have revealed that with the appropriate use of polyvalent phosphate electrolytes these slimes can be liberated from the coal surface. Just attrition and desliming are not enough to ensure complete liberation of slimes. Coal, after treatment with these electrolytes and then deslimed, floats readily with a common frother, such as MIBC. Modifications in the conventional flotation circuits have been suggested to ensure an efficient flotation of fine coal.

Following an increase in the number of methane ignitions in South African coal mines a new ventilation system was developed. The "Hydravert" system conceived in late 1979 for use in low seam coal mines, where the bord and pillar method of working is used, has been extensively developed to include applications for mining seams up to 4.5 metres high. A brief history of the development is supplied including some of the pitfalls encountered in the hydraulic equipment design and selection.

Iron ore sinter accounts for a large proportion of blast furnace ferrous burden in Chinese steel mills. Depleting high-grade iron ore resources and spreading complexity of iron ores in mineralogy and morphology have made it more difficult to utilise iron ores efficiently and economically. In this paper, the physical properties of iron ore particles were characterised using mechanical sieving, laser sizing and gas adsorption. From those measurements, two physical indices (fractal dimension of the particle size distribution and surface morphological factor) are defined as important variables for optimising the granulation performance of iron ores. The moisture capacity and the contact angle of iron ore particles with water were also measured to determine the strategy of water-feed in the granulation process. It can be concluded from the experimental results that an increase in the fractal dimension of the iron ore particles will lead to a better granulation performance, while an increase in moisture capacity with a range of 12.8 ~ 14.8 per cent would increase the optimum water content where the granule packed bed achieves its best permeability. Furthermore, the optimum permeability varies inversely with the moisture capacity of the sinter mixture.CITATION:Huang, X, Lv, X, Zhang, R, Bai, C and Zhou, M, 2013. The detonation pressure of an explosive is a function of its density and its velocity of detonation (VOD) and relates directly to the degree and manner in which the explosive loads the surrounding rock. The suitabil- ity of an explosive to any particular situation is determined not so much by the total energy released but more by the rate at which it is released. As the science of rock blasting advances it is becoming economically more important to quantify explosive performance, particularly with respect to quality control and fragmentation. As part of a major explosive user, BHP Central Research Laboratories have developed a number of tech- niques to determine the detonation characteristics of explosives. These include a method of continuous velocity of detonation measurement based on the SLIFER principle. This not only enables the VOD of the explo- sive to be determined, but also has the versatility to allow factors such as under priming, slow run up, the effect of water, variable energy load- ing and the velocity of the shock wave in the stemming to be assessed. Multi point VOD systems have also been developed for more routine appli- cations. With a minor modification they can be used to determine the absolute delay of detonators accurately and economically. Direct deto- nation pressure measurement methods have also been developed based on piezoresistive techniques. Future developments include the incorpo- ration of all the above techniques into a single, portable package, allow- ing easy use on the mine site.

In 2001, the Springvale Coal Mine determined a requirement for a 360 m deep vertical airway to ventilate ongoing underground longwall mining operations. The project, referred to as the Springvale No 3 Ventilation Shaft, was completed in 2003 - 2004 by blind boring a 4.25 m diameter hole from the surface to the coal seam at 360 m depth. The shaft was completed with a 3.5 m inside diameter lining made from a continuous watertight steel and concrete composite pipe. Presented from both the clientÆs and the contractorÆs perspective, the following paper describes the process of constructing a blind bored ventilation shaft for this application. Beginning with the clientÆs definition of the requirements and specifications for the shaft, the paper describes the steps followed by Springvale Coal prior to awarding the contract. Springv aleÆs process involved a thorough site investigation including procurement of geotechnical data for prospective contractors and the management of issues relating to safety, quality and the environment. The clientÆs view is followed by a description of the planning and works performed by their nominated shaft drilling contractor, Ardent Underground Pty Ltd.The contractorÆs description of the works includes the details of the blind shaft drilling and lining construction process used for this application. The design of the shaft lining installed at Springvale Coal was the first of its type to be used in Australia. The successful installation of a watertight composite shaft lining and the safety of the method, which did not require any personnel to enter the shaft or the mine, were among the positive outcomes from the project.

The kinetics of the direct chlorination of, zircon in the presence of carbon was studied at temperatures between 9000C and 12000 C. From the experimental data it is prop- osed that the most likely mechanism for metal oxide (MeO2) chlorination is as follows: At I Surfaceon zMeO2+ZMeCl - MeOC12 (1) At Carbon MeOC12+C+Cl MeC14+CO (2) Surface It.is envisaged that this type of mechan- ism would occur for both the zirconium and, silicon. constituents of the ore. In the above mechanism; the surface re- actions appear to be fast and not rate controll- ing. In a carbon surface deficient bed the diff- usion of oxychloride intermediate through the boundary layer to the carbon surface becomes the rate controlling step. In a zircon surface deficient bed the diffusion of oxychloride away from the zircon surface controls the reaction. This postulated mechanism can be used to ex-, plain the observed experimental effects.

This paper outlines the advances made in vacuum filtration as developed by Outomec Process Filters and details the results obtained at a number of Australian installations. The first section of the paper details the technical advances made by the use of ceramic media in vacuum filtration and explains the reasons for the use of the technology. The second part of the paper discusses a number of Australian installations of the ceramic vacuum filter and where possible compares the actual experiences with those predicted from the test work which preceded the installations. The Ceramec Capillary Vacuum Filter is a vacuum disc filter which combines the proven mechanical attributes of a disc filter with exciting new ceramic vacuum technology from Outomec of Finland.

The portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was trialled to determine the extent and intensity of any hydrothermal alteration halo associated with gold mineralisation in the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) of the Otago Schist.   Twelve diamond drillholes through the HMSZ were analysed with the PIMA at a sample spacing of 1 m. The drillholes were selected on two traverses along the line of strike and down-dip of the mineralisation in and around Panel 2 of the Frasers underground development.   The study showed that the Hangingwall shear of the HMSZ has a more distinctive infrared signature in intersections with high grades. The Hangingwall shear in these drill holes is defined by a shift in the wavelength of the Al-OH absorption feature from ~2220 nm to <2210 nm. This shift is attributed to a change in the mineralogy from phengite to muscovite. Overprinting this trend in some of the drillholes is the presence of the 2210 nm Al-OH absorption feature, ascribed to kaolinite. Kaolinite also tends to be present in numerous other regions of the schist above the Hangingwall shear associated with steeply dipping faults and foliation parallel joints. In drill holes with low grades the Hangingwall shear does not exhibit any obvious infrared signature.   At the scale of study, the PIMA does not provide evidence for an alteration halo associated with hydrothermal mineralisation above the Hangingwall shear. Possible tectonic movement may have displaced any alteration halo that once existed, away from the zone of mineralisation. For this reason, PIMA apparently cannot be used for predicting the location of the Hangingwall shear during exploration drilling. However, the study did show that the PIMA could define the Hangingwall shear when the rocks were sufficiently altered and mineralised.

Kimberlite pipes, as opposed to dykes, sill and secondary deposits, are the primary target for diamond exploration companies because they have simple geometries and can contain large volumes of potentially diamond-bearing ore. Once discovered, important decisions have to be made regarding the sampling of these geological entities to establish the total volume of ore present, and to define the internal geology, which can be complex in nature and controls the distribution of diamond grade. It is essential that as part of this process the uncertainty in constructed geological models are assessed. In this paper the Orapa AK1 kimberlite pipe in Botswana is used as a case study to explore a potential methodology for defining this uncertainty. The uncertainty of the rock volumes of different types can be characterised by a geostatistical approach. Geostatistical simulations, based upon a plausible representation of the geological bodies, provide different possible images of the orebody that can be considered as different realities. By testing different borehole layouts and drilling the orebody virtually on the computer, many different, but equi-probable realisations of the pipes can be produced. It is then possible to estimate the rocksÆ volumes and compare them with the actual ones. A statistical analysis of the relationship between estimation error and the number of boreholes can then be used to optimise the next sampling campaign. The rock volumes are obtained from a two-step simulation process. Firstly, the pipe geometry is simulated by means of introducing variations around the geological block model, by an original method called centre point simulation (CPS), which has been developed for this purpose. Secondly, the internal geology is then simulated within the pipe. The methodology for simulating the internal geological zones has to be adapted to the level of information and to the geological structure itself. The upper portion at Orapa AK1 is filled with sedimentary crater facies. Here plurigaussian simulation techniques can be applied that are adapted to the simulation of sedimentary facies. The central zones of the pipe are typically subvertically-oriented massive volcaniclastic deposits and breccias and the lower regions comprise a complex root zone. CPS is appropriate for these zones.

The disagregation and privatisation of the mining and power gene ration operations of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria has being taking place over the past five years. This has transformed the service provision to the new organisations and has resulted in major change to the working lives and professional relationships of thousands of Australians. The authors wish to take this opportunity to explore the issues arising as the program of privatisation of public assets continues. Changes within the workplace which resulted from the outsourcing of the 'investigation and design' functions and more lately as a result of privatisation of the operating, generating and distribution businesses are discussed. The responsibility of managers retaining the services of design engineers has changed. There is an added responsibility of contract administration and an increased focus on intellectual property and strategic issues. The way in which the sectors are adapting is discussed and future directions are explored. We welcome this opportunity to explore the changes in professional life which have taken place over the last five years in the Latrobe Valley Power industry. Engineers and earth scientists have a pivotal role in the continuing successful operation of the three Latrobe Valley Mines of the generation companies. The Mines' collectively excavate annually over 13 million cubic metres of overburden and 48 million tonnes of coal for delivery to mine-mouth power stations and for briquette manufacture.

There are a number of major infrastructure tunnelling projects currently underway or proposed in New Zealand, including construction of new road and rail facilities and the refurbishment of existing road tunnels. These new projects have triggered a rethink of traditional practices in underground fire and life safety and local regulation.While there is a current surge in activity, tunnels have been a signifi cant part of New Zealand’s transport infrastructure for over a century. Despite this background, the new projects commonly face challenges that are symptoms of a national regulatory environment that has aspects that are inappropriate for underground environments. There are inconsistencies in local regional regulation and an absence of national guidance and standards relating to tunnel design. Historically, New Zealand has looked across the Tasman for guidance. Although recent overseas tunnel designs present learning opportunities, the adoption of international best practice and standards may not necessarily address local expectations or needs.This paper explores a number of specific matters affecting the design of road and rail tunnels in the New Zealand context, namely; the Building Regulations and associated local consenting processes and parties, and the responsibilities and needs of the New Zealand Fire Service.The discussion highlights the importance of a collaborative approach involving the designer, asset owner, regulators, emergency services, and other parties, and ensuring up-front clarity in design responsibility and ownership of residual risk.

As the Mount Morgan electrolytic chlorine plant is the first of its kind installed in Australia, and as the details of this method of producing chlorine have, up to the present time, been kept more or less secret all over the world, the author trusts that this paper may fill a gap in the technical literature of the subject.When an electric current is passed through a strong solution of sodium chloride the following reaction takes place -2 NaCl + 2 H 20 = 2 NaOH + C1 2 + H 2 Chlorine gas is liberated at the anode or entering pole of the current, while caustic soda and hydrogen are formed at the cathode or leaving pole of the current. If the two electrodes be simply immersed in a vessel containing salt and the current be turned on, there will be no result save slight smell of escaping chlorine gas. The passage of the current will have certainly split up the salt water according to the above equation, but as the products would be in juxtaposition they would immediately reunite, and the electrical energy would have been spent without any beneficial result having been obtained. West Wallsend No. 2 Colliery is a new mine that is presently being developed in the New- castle Coalfield by J. & A. Brown & Abermain Seaham Collieries Ltd., a subsidiary of Coal & Allied Industries Ltd. It is situated near Barnsley and is some 15 miles by rail from the port of Newcastle. The mine will produce coal from both Bore- hole and Young Wallsend seams. The Borehole seam has a working seam thickness varying from 7 ft to 5 ft while the Young Wallsend seam presents a choice of two distinct working thick- nesses, i.e. 5 ft. or 8 ft, the upper 3 ft containing much high ash material. The inter- seam interval varies from 10 ft on the western edge of the area to more than 70 ft in the central portion. The Borehole seam lies at a depth varying from 550 ft to 750 ft and the overlying surface terrain is gently undulating bushland with limited surface development.

Field instrumentation was installed to monitor ground and lining behaviour during and after construction of the Mount Shaughnessy Tunnel (Rogers Pass Short Tunnel) in Canada. The instrumentation was placed in a soft ground section of the tunnel at its crossing with the Trans Canada Highway. The tunnel was excavated through a dense bouldery soil. Presentation of the field data and inter- pretation of the tunnel performance from a geological-geotechnical point of view form the basis of this paper. The loss of ground due to the tunnel excavation was found to be exceptionally small. This has been attributed to the unusually high strength and stiffness of the host soil. Evaluation using the Boundary Element Method, together with a simplified analytical technique, were applied to assess the relevant soil parameters and their influence on the tunnel performance.

This paper describes the technique developed by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories (ACIRL) for the treatment of bore core samples to obtain data for coal preparation studies of the target reserves. The particle size distribution within the sample has a significant influence on the relationship between the yield and ash per cent of the floats coal at any ash level. The size analysis within the reconstituted feed from a coal preparation plant is determined by the size analysis of the feed coal, physical degradation of material in the process, and the breakdown of associated shales in water. The extent of material breakdown was studied in the ACIRL coal preparation pilot plants. The method of bore core evaluation includes simulation of this breakdown in a sample selectively crushed to conform with predicted or known run-of-mine size distribution. Modifications have also been made to the laboratory methods for froth flotation to approximate more closely with industrial practice.

This paper concerns a pragmatic approach to a problem that is common to many operations in the mining industry: how, over the short-term, to grasp the extent and distribution of long-term financial risk from environmental causes and reduce these risks strategically, in order to maintain stability and flexibility in the operations. Surprisingly, many companies operate without an environmental master plan or tools that can help managers measure and reduce financial risks. Such companies may be subject to unknown unacceptable financial risks from environmental causes. While many companies have some kind of internal system of environmental standards, it is often the case that such systems have uneven or limited effect, and offer no opportunities for visualising, measuring or managing aggregate financial risks from environmental causes. `Aggregate risks' are defined here as the calculated total expected financial costs to a company, or a subdivision of a company, from environmental causes at nominated operations over a defined time period. Aggregate risks take into account the type and magnitude of an environmental problem set, the likelihood of occurrence, and the time frame during which the problems will develop or solutions are required. For the large corporation, the 'amount of' aggregate environmental risk is a statistic that can be managed, along with other financial parameters, at the corporate level to improve the stability and predictability of operations, and protect the interests of shareholders. This paper concerns development of a management framework and a tool for the large corporation that responds to the need for managing aggregate environmental financial risks. The logical framework proposed to overcome the need for strategic vision is the Environmental Master Plan, and this is described in the next section. The analytical tool proposed to measure aggregate risks and provide relevant data and insights to managers, is called an Environmental Risk Management Information System, and its mechanics are described in a subsequent section.

The Southern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.
