Facies associations in the Okiduse Volcanics, woodlark island, suggest that two major volcanic centres erupted synchronously during the Middle Miocene. These centres are referred to as the Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre and the Uvarakoi Caldera. The Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre, centred on Boganuse Mountain in the Okiduse Range, was a typical, moderate-sized composite volcano (or stratovolcano). The seq-uence is readily divisible into lava (Boganuse lava unit), breccia (Nikuben breccia unit) and epiclastic (Talpas sandstone unit) dominant facies, typical of composite volcanoes. These facies girdle Boganuse Mountain and they are interpreted to represent vent, cone forming and ring plain associat-ions, respectively. These facies indicate a reconstructed volcano of approximately 1,700m height with a basal diameter of 7km. The presence of limited exposures of intrusive associated with the vent facies (Kuike'beimmicrodiorite) suggests that the volcano is only partially dissected. The Uvarakoi Caldera is a felsic volcanic system contrasting with the mafic Watou Mountain centre.

Gold at the Harbour Lights Mine (HLM), WA occurs principally in pyrite (Py) and arsenopyrite (AsPy) minerals rendering it inaccessible to direct cyanidation. Froth flotation produces a concentrate with low mass recovery and with high recoveries of sulfides. After investigating several alternatives, a novel flotation process has been developed to separate the concentrate into pyrite and arsenopyrite rich fractions. The pyrite fraction is finely ground and cyanide leached, while the arsenopyrite is treated off-site. This paper describes the separation process from laboratory bench scale through to commercial operation at the HLM gold plant.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is a world-class operation located in an extreme environment 220 km south of the Arctic Circle in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics û such as limited winter access via an ice road, mine infrastructure being located on an island, with mining taking place behind dykes holding back a lake, temperatures at the mine that get down to -45¦C in winter, and the presence of bears, wolves, foxes and wolverines! One thing that Diavik does have in common with other mines around the world is the need for reconciliation. In late 2005 Diavik implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate the process of reconciling geological models, mine plans, production data and plant results. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation. It outlines the migration of Diavik away from a comprehensive and effective spreadsheet-based reconciliation process to a commercial grade, automated and web-based information management system. This paper documents the reasons for moving away from the spreadsheet system, the key parameters used for reconciliation, and the benefits gained by closing the loop between reconciliation and ongoing process improvement.

The known coal resources of South Australia are either of poor quality, or expensive to extract, or both. Export quality coal occurs only at great depth in the remote north of the State; the balance of the State's coal resources are suitable only for local electricity generation. Currently there is only one coal mine in the State, at Leigh Creek. This provides fuel for approximately 34% of the State's electricity generation, the balance being fuelled by natural gas. In the near future, new fuel sources must be developed to augment diminishing supplies of natural gas, and to cater for increasing demands for electricity. The South Australian Government has determined that future electricity generation will be based on the combustion of local coals. The geological and geographical environment of the known coal deposits and the quality of these coals are such that the most up to date and innovative technology must be applied to both extraction and combustion processes. The Government, the Electricity Trust of South Australia, and several Australian and overseas companies have embarked on an extensive research and development programme to ensure that these otherwise useless resources can be developed to the benefit of the State.

The Antarctic Peninsula consists of accretion complex sedimentary and volcanic rocks, talc-alkaline magmatic are rocks, marginal basin sediments and extension-related alkali basalts, dominantly of Mesozoic to Cenozoic age. Metallic minerals have been recorded at "250 localities but two thirds of these are innocuous occurrences of Fe+Cu accessory minerals. The remaining -70 localities are related to hydrothermal mineralization processes. Metallogenetic associations identified are: vein and breccia-hosted Fe+Cu+Zn+Pb+Mo or Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn, shear-hosted Fe+Cu, volcanogenic Fe+Cu and pegmatite-hosted Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn. Anomalous Au, Ag, As, W and Sb also occur but are not of economic interest. Metallogenic zoning is unproven and genetic models are uncertain, possibly involving volcanogenic, epithermal to hypothermal vein and porphyry-type systems. Substantial field and laboratory studies are required to understand distribution and Genesis.

Roadheader tunnelling machines have been used in Australia by both mining companies and contractors involved in the mining and con- struction industries since the early 1970's. They have both advantages and limitations, and this paper discusses machine excavation from the point of view of a contractor who has both reaped the benefits and suffered the conse- quences of using roadheaders. The paper also includes brief descriptions of three projects tackled by roadheader, all the projects being Declines.

The thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique was used to measure the kinetics of thinning of single foam films and disjoining pressures in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and electrolyte (NaCl). The results were analysed in view of the Reynolds equation to determine the role of surface forces in film thinning. It was found that film thinning is controlled by surface forces at thicknesses below approximately 200 nm. It was also found that hydrophobic force plays an important role particularly at low SDS and NaCl concentrations. The values of the hydrophobic force constant (K232) estimated from the film thinning experiments were used to predict the disjoining pressure isotherm using the extended DLVO theory, which were found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. The TFPB technique was also used to measure the equilibrium thicknesses (He) of the foam films stabilised by a non-ionic surfactant, n-octanol, in the presence of NaCl. At a given ionic strength, He increased noticeably with increasing octanol concentration at very low concentrations. This observation suggests that hydrophobic force is at its maximum level in the absence of surfactant and decreases with increasing surfactant concentration. The results obtained with the single foam films were used to explain the stability of the three-dimensional foams.

The recoveries of the three cobalt minerals in the Mount Cobalt deposit, cobaltite CoAsS, erythrite CO3(AS04)8H20, and new cobalt mineral with a composition approximating 2CoO.CaO.Fe203.2As205.11H2O were investigated using physical and surface-chemical processes.Over 80 per cent cobalt recovery was achieved by tabling a cobaltite-mineralized sample, while about 76 per cent cobalt recovery was obtained by dry feed magnetic separation of a sample containing erythrite and the new cobalt mineral. The resultant primary magnetic concentrate with a cobalt grade of 5.5 per cent, was able to be upgraded to 14.4 per cent cobalt by regrinding .and a further magnetic separation.Electrophoretic mobility - pH responses for each of the three cobalt minerals were found to be similar. Each mineral remained negative over the pH range 3 to 11 and was most negative at mildly alkaline pH values.Cobaltite was floated effectively with amyl and ethyl xanthate collectors under acidic conditions at collector concentrations of 10-2M to 10-5M. Erythrite showed a similar flotation response using 10-sM amyl xanthate. The practical application of these laboratory separations to an industrial process is suggested.

"The Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated a large quantity of data that has been used to create a geometallurgically enabled block model. An ongoing challenge is to convert data into usable information and embed geometallurgical practices into resource model development and mine planning to assist with the identification of opportunities to maximise value.This paper will discuss the methods used to disseminate geometallurgical information throughout the planning life cycle including data extraction methods from the geometallurgy acQuire database, and the inclusion of a geometallurgy module in the Olympic Dam Stope Reserves database. The use of geometallurgical information in short-, medium- and long-term mine design and scheduling, including its use in grade descriptor development and stope value assessment tools will also be presented. The first production stage in any mining operation is the breaking of whole rock into fragments small enough for loading and subseq- uent handling. This primary fragmentation is most frequently accomplished with blasting. The maximum fragment size and the fragment size distribution have an influence on the subsequent loading, handling and crushing costs. It is assumed that total rock fragmen- tation in practice is a result of an interact- ing array of radial cracks from various blastholes. The representation for the basic pattern of radial cracks emitted from a particular blasthole is first described. A model is then developed simulating the interaction between blastholes at various burdens and spacings, and in simultaneous and delayed modes. The resultant picture is analysed and a fragment size distribution calculated. Methods of incorporating the existing faults in the rock are also discussed. Finally application of this model to various facets of mining are considered.

Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. The heterogeneous reactions of carbonaceous materials with oxidising gases are basic to all combustion phenomena and to many gasification processes. The carbon- carbon dioxide reaction at elevated temperatures (Reactivity) plays important roles in many metallurgical operations like iron blast furnace and ferro-alloys smeltings, zinc and lead smelting, alumina reduction, cupola operation and direct reduction processes. The stoichiometry but not the mechanism of the reaction between CO2 and carbon is represented by the equation (Boudouard reaction) CO2 + C 2CO (1) This reaction is more complex than that between carbon monoxide and metal oxides, which involves essentially a transfer of oxygen from the oxide to carbon monoxide to generate carbon dioxide without any change in gas volume, whereas the volume of the product gas of Equation (1) is twice that of the reactant gas. In the present paper an attempt has been made to review critically the reactivity measurements of various carbonaceous materials in carbon dioxide atmosphere. Steps in C-CO2 reactions, surface reaction mechanism, role of mass transfer on reaction kinetics, dynamic oxygen exchange reaction and rate equations and rate controlling steps are discussed. Various methods of reactivity measurements with their pros and cons are also presented. Effects of pertinent process variables on the reactivity of carbon are also described in detail.

Most preventive environmental management practices promote proactive integrated approaches to waste management. For example, life cycle assessment is often used to find the ‘hot spots’ of environmental burdens. This kind of approach is often based on generic data and has rarely been used for tailings. Besides, life cycle assessments are less useful for designing operations or simulating changes in the process and consequent environmental outcomes. It is evident that an integrated approach for tailings research linked to better processing options is needed.The aim of this Nextmine™ project is to develop new tailings management models by streamlining orebody characterisation, process optimisation and rehabilitation. We present an integrated tailings management approach and preliminary results from a case study. Combined grinding and flotation models were developed using geometallurgical data from the orebody, to predict the properties of tailings produced under various processing conditions. The modelling scenarios based on the case study data provide the capacity to predict the composition of tailings and the resulting environmental management implications. For example, the type and content of clay minerals in tailings will affect the geotechnical stability and water recovery. People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

The Tampakan deposit is a strongly telescoped high-sulphidation-epithermal/ porphyry deposit pair which is hosted by a sequence of probable Pliocene age subaerial andesite flows. These host units lie on the western flank of a deeply dissected andesitic stratovolcano within the northernmost portion of the Sangihe Arc in southern Mindanao. The deposit was discovered by WMC geologists in 1992 and is currently undergoing resource evaluation. Preliminary resource estimations indicate a total inferred metal content of 12 million tonnes of copper metal and 16 million ounces of gold. Using a 0.2 per cent Cu cut-off grade, the deposit has a current mineral resource of approximately 2.5 billion tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.48 per cent copper. At a higher cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Cu, the mineral resource is approximately 900 million tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.75 per cent copper. Mineralisation is open both to the west and at depth. The Tampakan district is centrally located with respect to a 100 km wide zone of left-lateral strike-slip deformation represented by the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The district is transected by several WNW-striking wrench faults which represent strands of the regional Cotabato Fault Zone. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation within the Tampakan deposit is strongly controlled by NNE-trending faults which lie along a dilational orientation within the Pliocene stress field associated with the Cotabato strike-slip fault zone. The mineralisation is broadly hosted by a gently-dipping, tabular zone of partial to massive silicification which displays multi-phase brecciation, acid-leaching, related vuggy porosity and which is developed within a district-scale advanced-argillic and argillic lithocap exceeding 90 km 2 in area. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation is associated with a silica-pyrophyllite-dickite-alunite-diaspore¦sericite alteration assemblage which is transitional downward to sericite-chlorite alteration and relict potassic biotite-chlorite-magnetite-anhydrite alteration associated with pervasively developed but weakly mineralised porphyry quartz stockwork veins. The high-sulphidation mineralisation is dominated by disseminated, vein and vug-filling enargite-bornite-digenite-chalcocite-covellite ¦ molybdenite which has overprinted an earlier phase of porphyry copper stockwork veins associated with high-level porphyritic hornblende diorite stocks. The distribution of high-sulphidation alteration and mineralisation reflects strong stratigraphic and structural controls. The high-sulphidation mineralisation covers a surface area of approximately 1.6 km by 2.0 km and forms a tabular, flat-lying to gently-dipping body between 200 and 500 metres thick. It is intersected at RL-1200 m ASL (at surface) in the northern portion of the deposit and extends down to RL-600 m ASL at the southern end. The deposit has been diamond-drill tested to a depth of 400 - 500 metres where low-grade chalcopyrite-bornite-pyrite mineralisation is hosted by pervasive quartz stockwork veins. This deep-level mineralisation represents the outer portion of a porphyry Cu system hosted by both andesite flows and the uppermost portions of high-level hornblende diorite stocks. Deep drilling to test for higher tenor porphyry Cu mineralisation is planned.

Background BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd is one of the major iron ore producers in the Pilbara Region of North Western Australia. The company manages three separate joint ventures; the Newman, Goldsworthy and Yandi joint ventures and two 100 per cent owned operations, Yampi and Jimblebar. The Newman operations constitute a mine site at Newman and a 426 km railroad to Port Hedland where there is an ore processing/port site. The Goldsworthy operations currently constitute a mine site at Shay Gap/Nimingarra, a developing mine site at Yarrie, a decommissioned mine site at Goldsworthy and an ore processing/port site at Finucane Island (Port Hedland). The Yandi operations include mining and processing facilities at site and a spur line to join the Newman Hedland railroad. Jimblebar operations are scree and bedrock mining near Newman and include mining, processing and a spur line to Newman where it joins the Newman-Hedland railroad. The Yampi operations constitute a mine/port site at Koolan Island (which is presently being decommissioned). The combined BHP Iron Ore operations produce approximately 46 Mtpa of iron ore. This paper will concentrate on the processes developed and applied for the decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site. The Goldsworthy site is on the northern boundary of the Pilbara Region and adjacent to the western extremity of the Great Sandy Desert. It is located approximately 110 km east of Port Hedland (see Figure 1). The area is generally of low relief with isolated low ranges. The mine site being within the Mount Goldsworthy range area. The geology of the area is essentially Archaean granite with Archaean banded iron formation becoming dominant within the ranges. The chief soils are hard alkaline red soils. The vegetation is essentially shrub steppe with the main hummock grass species being spinifex (Triodia sp). The climate for the region is semi arid tropical. The temperature ranges from a mean low of 15¦C in winter to a mean high of 40¦ in summer. Rainfall is episodic, occurring mainly throughout the summer as a result of tropical depressions or cyclonic activity. The average annual rainfall is approximately 300 mm and annual evaporation may exceed rainfall by up to 2500 mm. Goldsworthy Mining Ltd commissioned the Goldsworthy site in 1965/66. Goldsworthy was the first iron ore operation and associated town site in the Pilbara region. The mine development peaked in 1977 with the town population reaching 1400 people. In 1982 mining ceased and the mining operations were relocated to Shay Gap, 80 km east of Goldsworthy. The Goldsworthy town continued as the base for the railing operations between Finucane Island and Shay Gap. BHP Minerals acquired Goldsworthy Mining Limited in 1990. The population for the town of Goldsworthy at this stage was around 450 people. Prior to 1986, users of satellite based remotely sensed data were almost exclusively reliant on the United States Landsat series of satellites to monitor our Earth's resources. This situation changed when France, Belgium and Sweden launched SPOT-1 in 1986. The year of 1988 saw the Japanese also enter into the earth resource satellite business. The Japanese launched an earth resource monitoring satellite with an emphasis on marine resources, hence the name MOS-1 (Marine Observation Satellite). Many more remote sensing instruments are planned for launch by these nations and others in the next 10 years.

Australia is a world leader in the design and operation of mines accessed by the decline method. Literature indicates that a number of metalliferous underground mines using the decline system are also increasing steadily. This increase has generated a great deal of interest in underground haulage systems in future due to the huge costs involved in the development of declines. Studies have also shown that the current method of accessing orebodies by the conventional decline method has proved to be expensive, especially for narrow vein deposits. This is because decline development costs are influenced by mine planning and design parameters as well as available haulage systems that the mining engineer can choose from. The current access method suggests that more waste material is being extracted because of the size of decline openings adopted (5.5 mW and 5.5 mH). Also the conventional 1:7 decline gradient and turning radius of 20 m makes decline lengths, as well as the duration of development, excessively longer. This paper discusses results of a mine design case study with monorail technology as a method of accessing and developing the decline. The proposed system is economical, has high advance rates and offers a significant reduction in capital expenditure. The study compares costs, development metres and the duration of decline development using the monorail system with the conventional (truck haulage) access method. Results obtained indicate that the monorail technology has the potential to reduce the decline length by over 62.6 per cent and decline costs by 63 per cent for the case study. The monorail system also reduces the total capital development costs by 22 per cent for the same case study. Due to rapid development resulting from increased advance rates and the shorter decline length coupled with smaller decline openings, the time to access the deposit reduced by 71.8 per cent. This case study demonstrates that the economics of narrow vein deposits can be improved significantly by using the monorail system of decline development.

Three-dimensional DEM (Distinct Element Method) simulations were conducted in order to examine the performance of screw conveyors, which are installed to transport bulk materials as parts of many industrial machines, including mining and construction machinery. To apply the DEM to the analysis of screw conveyors, we added a spiral object and cylinder objects, which correspond to the helical screw, the casing pipe, and the driving shaft of a screw conveyor. These objects are represented analytically to enhance the precision and efficiency when calculating the interaction between objects and particles. Simulations were conducted for some real applications: inclined and other types of screws, as well as the basic types (horizontal and vertical). Results were compared with previous work and empirical equations. It is concluded that this method is sufficiently well-developed and useful to analyse various kinds of screw conveyors.

The Goldfields extend from Norseman in the Eastern Goldfields to Marble Bar in the Pilbara; a distance of approximately 1,500 km. (Figure 1). Tailings dams are conspicuous on the relatively flat and featureless Goldfields' landscape. They impound wastes from mining and processing operations. Tailings dams interact dynamically with their environment and progressively consolidate as water is removed. Water recovery systems have been used over the last decade to improve water conservation, increase dam stability and to extend the service life of the dam. Without water recovery, dams would need to be significantly larger to permit the tailings to dry back sufficiently to support subsequent depositions. The paper reviews inter-relationships between the tailings dam and its environment and discusses water recovery systems, that are commonly used. The effectiveness of water management is illustrated by reference to seasonal water recoveries measured by Western Mining Corporation (W.M.C.) at their number 2 dam at Kambalda.
