Monolithic packing systems have gained in popularity as a gate side packing method. However, there has been no detailed investigation to assess their underground strength behaviour. This work includes the laboratory and in situ investigation for strength behaviour determined on various monolithic packing materials namely Tekpak-XX, Hydropak-20, Hydropak-30, Astrapak-3R, Flashpak, Thyssen pack and Aquablends. A simple technique for assessing the pack strength was developed at the laboratory by using a penetrometer, of which penetration resistance can be directly correlated with the uniaxial strength of the pack. The in situ strength investigations were made on core samples obtained from three pipes inserted inside the pack, while the penetration test were made on the pack surface. The in situ results indicated that the packing material develops an inconsistent strength on various part of the pack which was mainly related to an inadequate mixing of grouts inside the pack.

WMC Limited, owner/operator of Olympic Dam, the worldÆs largest underground uranium mine and the fourth largest underground copper mine has now completed an expansion that has been classed as a benchmark in the mining industry. To achieve a production increase from 3.4 to 9.25 Mtpa from an underground mining operation in two years was a major challenge, it was essential to review the overall materials handling system from æthe face to the stockpileÆ. The challenge was two-fold:How to deliver 30 000 tonne of ore per day to the processing plant, from a single underground mine? To provide the processing plant with a consistent metallurgical feed. This paper traces the transformation from the old to the new materials handling system at Olympic Dam.

The energy consumption for producing metal from ore is strongly linked to the chemical stability of mineral being processed, availability and richness of the ore, and process route. Energy efficiencies are particularly linked to the process route. The energy efficiency of high temperature operations vary considerably but energy efficiencies greater than 70 per cent are achieved for large-scale metal production. Low temperature processing through grinding, leaching and subsequent electrowinning use large amounts of energy. In particular, grinding and electrowinning suffer from low overall energy efficiencies. The physical chemistry of a new proposed low temperature route, reactive ball milling, is unclear but preliminary evaluations indicate that it is likely to suffer from high energy consumption. In conclusion, low temperature processing routes for metals generally consume more energy that comparable high temperature processing routes.

Since 1958 there have been 16 major coal mine explosions in the U.S. claiming 323 lives. Whilst the exact cause of a number of these incidents has not been determined, the majority has involved gas ignitions in one way or another. In addition there have been fatal gas explosions in salt mines and vapor explosions in oil mines. Furthermore, many of the oil shale mines in the U.S. have proven to be gassy giving cause for concern. Compounding these problems is the fact that frictional ignition of methane in coal mines has dramatically increased over the past several years; over 100 such ignitions were reported in 1979. While, no fatalities have been attributed to frictional ignition in the U.S. since early 1978, a recent mine explosion in Nova Scotia which resulted in 11 fatalities was attributed to a frictional face ignition. Research being conducted at the Bureau of Mines is aimed at the prevention and suppression of gas explosions. Emphasis is placed on new coal cutter bits for reducing ignition frequency, machine-mounted water sprays for preventing frictional face ignitions and automatic devices for quenching incipient ignitions and fully developed gas explosions.

The investigation of the explosion characteristics of nine Bowen Basin (Central Queensland) dust samples in a suitable coal dust explosion chamber using a new dust concentration probe provides several advances in the area of coal dust explosibility testing. The 20 litre explosion chamber, of novel design, uses rotation of the main body of the chamber together with air jets for dust dispersion, and allows testing of different types of explosion initiators and analysis of the explosion characteristics of coal dust/methane mixtures of varying concentrations.A new development was a dielectric dust probe for the measurement of coal dust concentration. A capacitive micrometry technique was successfully adapted to measure dust concentration. The system uses a ratio-transformer bridge for measurement of small changes in a capacitive probe designed to sample a representative volume. The device is accurate, and is capable of operating in the hostile environment within the explosion chamber.The explosion chamber and dust probe characterise the explosive potential of coal dust samples by determination of the dust lean limit concentration in varying mixture with methane. Plots of lean limit points obtained in this way present an explosion curve for each sample which indicates the potential of the coal dust/methane to explode under the conditions of initiation in the chamber. The explosion curve obtained for each sample presents a unique signature that appears to reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust.The results from this series of laboratory experiments appear to provide a useful index and indicate potential areas of interest for future research.

The reliable estimation of ore reserves in mineral sand deposits depends on drilling methods and assay techniques that have been specially developed within the industry. Improvement of these techniques is a continuing process, as variations within and between deposits are highlighted during the actual mining operation. Constant monitoring of metallurgical losses along with mineral production allows comparison of mineral tonnages accounted for by mining, with original calculated reserves. A review of ore reserves in the Jerusalem Creek field from scout drilling in the sixties, through mining in the seventies, shows the progression from understatement prior to mining, to the present when more than two thirds of the reserves have been depleted.

An investigation was undertaken to critically analyse the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete (FRS) for a variety of applications in large diameter shafts. Those applications included the use of FRS with or without the addition of subsequent rock bolting in the temporary support cycle prior to the installation of a permanent lining, most likely cast in situ concrete or as the final lining medium.Numerous authors have considered the early re-entry and strength characteristics of FRS in recent years. The current study has investigated the practical application of the recommendations of many leading authors in an endeavour to establish practical and acceptable risk-assessed procedures for the use of FRS for rapid, safe, efficient and cost-effective shaft sinking.Shaft sinking is regarded as a specialist and potentially higher risk activity due to the confined work environment, exposure to ground conditions and a high degree of manual handling associated with getting materials to the sinking face. The use of robotically applied FRS as a primary lining in shaft sinking has significant safety advantages in reducing manual handing associated with mesh safety support and bolting, as well as reducing direct exposure to ground conditions.The study involved both field testing and a literature review. The study established an initial set of criteria for the use of FRS in the development of large diameter shafts and demonstrated a number of scenarios where the technique of robotically applied FRS provided significant safety and cycle time advantages. A pilot plant study has been made of the liberation characteristics of a nickel ore under different milling conditions. A series of runs were made ranging from fully autogenous grinding to semi-autogenous grinding with a ball load of 8%. The mill products were sized and assayed then analysed by QEM4SEM. This enabled a full liberation analysis to be carried out to see whether the autogenous grinding leads to improved liberation by promoting selective breakage. Though it is frequently claimed that fully autogenous grinding yields superior liberation this could not be detected in the present study.

The application of modern sciences prior to nineteenseventies have resulted in the placing of Continental Drift theory into broader concept of Plate Tectonics. The concept is applied to explain the Cenozoic Tectonics of North Sumatera.Oceanic crust flooring the Indian Ocean is moving northeasterly and being obliquely subducted at a Benioff zone along the western margin of Asian Plate, marked by the Sunda Trench in the west coast of Sumatera. This phenomenon was generated since late Mesozoic, continued during Cenozoic era up to present day, resulted an exellent example of arc-trench system which can be traced along SW - NE transect of North Sumatera.The oblique-subducting plate of Indian Ocean beneath Asian Plate, together with spreading of Andaman seafloor beginning in Pliocen epoch, have led to the origin of Sumateran Fault System; the System extends throughout the length of Sumatera island. In the region under review it comprises almost contiguous set of broadly SE-trending. Evidences for transcurent-dextral displacement have been observed.

Western Australia is a major exporter of minerals, which places significant economic and environmental responsibility on Government and the stateÆs mining industry. Moving into the 21st century, mineral production in Western Australia is $14 billion accounting for 50 per cent of the stateÆs export income. There are over 60 large-scale mining operations distributed throughout the arid regions of the state (less than 300 mm/year rainfall). There are four key mineral provinces in arid Western Australia including the Pilbara (iron ore), Murchison (gold), Northern and Southern Goldfields (gold and nickel). These provinces have significant differences, particularly in respect to groundwater demand from mining and mineral processing, aquifer systems that are utilised, and approaches to groundwater management. The arid nature of the stateÆs interior and subsequent lack of surface water resources has required substantial groundwater resource development by the mining industry. A variety of aquifers have been explored and utilised ranging from shallow alluvium and calcrete, discrete fractured zones in bedrock, concealed palaeochannels and inland sedimentary basins. Groundwater usage by the mining industry is about 150 GL/year with most abstraction related to mine dewatering, mineral processing and dust suppression. Groundwater abstraction in Western Australia is regulated by the Water and Rivers Commission. In the Goldfields, the depletion of brackish (>2000 mg/L) and saline groundwater from storage is permissible, as mining is considered the beneficial use for groundwater which may be as much as 200 000 mg/L. In contrast, the low salinity groundwater of the Murchison and Pilbara is allocated on a sustainable basis. The role of monitoring and ongoing aquifer reassessment is crucial in water management, in evaluating the condition and performance of stressed aquifer systems. Mining operations face a variety of water resource issues ranging from insufficient availability for processing to excessive mine dewatering. These issues also change as a mine operation proceeds through its development, commonly starting with a deficiency and moving into surplus as deeper pits require more dewatering. Operating mines have to contend with three main issues: water supply, wastewater disposal and contamination of local water resources. In contrast, post closure issues are related to aquifer recovery or re-establishment of groundwater equilibrium, development of pit lakes in mine voids and isolation of waste products and associated seepage or run-off.

Currently there are in excess of 200 companies listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange and the total market value of all the listed shares amounts to $4.6 billion. The number of listed mining companies stands at nine and with a market value of $35 million accounts for less than one per cent of the total market capitalisation. In comparison, the Australian mining and energy sectors account for nearly 50 per cent of the total market capitalisation, which currently exceeds A$41 billion. Surprisingly the share markets in both countries were primarily founded on the discoveries of minerals last century.

An investigation was performed to determine the sequence of events which caused the 1987 surface subsidence and related damage to several homes in Walker County, Alabama, USA (see Figure 1). Surface affects compared to mine maps indicated the subsidence to be mine related. However, two coal seams had been worked under this area. The upper seam, the American seam ranged from 250 to 280 feet beneath the surface in the area in question. It was mined-out before 1955 by room-and-pillar method leaving in place narrow-long pillars to support the overburden strata, and abandoned in 1955. The lower seam, the Mary Lee seam, ranged from 650 to 700 feet beneath the surface. The Mary Lee seam had been abandoned in 1966 and subsequently became flooded. The dewatering of the Mary Lee seam workings in 1986 caused the submerged pillars to be exposed to the atmosphere. Due to multiple seam mining and the fact that workings had been inundated then dewatered, a subsurface investigation ensued to determine the sequence and ultimate cause of surface subsidence. Core sample tests with fracture analysis in conjunction with "down-the-hole" TV camera inspections provided necessary information to determine that the subsidence started in the lower seam and progressed through the upper coal seam to the surface. Evidence from the investigation program established that dewatering of the lower seam workings caused the marginally stable support pillars and the roof to collapse. This failure triggered additional subsidence in the upper seam which broadened the area of the influence at the surface.

The EnvIRONment process has been developed to treat steel works dust and organic wastes simultaneously. A pelletised feed is fed into a special DC electric furnace, the pellets becoming immersed in a molten slag above a carbon saturated bath. The iron oxide in the pellets is reduced and carburised whilst the organics are broken down to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and water vapour. Volatile metals are vapourised and collected in the baghouse. Over two years of trials in a 100 kg DC electric are furnace has brought the process to the stage where it is ready for commercialisation.

Raise drilling (or raise boring) is not a new technology or methodology. The first raise drilling machine was developed by The Robbins Company (TRC) of the USA in 1962. TRC manufactured the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) in 1952 and Jim Robbins, the founder of the company wanted to ‘turn the TBM concept on its head’ so to speak.Many improvements have ensued in the 50 years since the first machine. Such improvements include advances in the drill rod and thread design, cutters and reaming heads. Raise boring would not have been possible without the development of the tungsten carbide insert cutters and there have been big advances in both the carbide technology and in the mechanical design of the cutters.Over time mines have developed deeper with a greater use of diesel equipment resulting in greater ventilation requirements. This in turn means larger and deeper ventilation shafts. There have also been improvements in directional drilling techniques. This all combines with the need and ability to construct larger shafts using the safe method of raise drilling. With suitable geotechnical conditions the RBR900VF is capable of drilling shafts to a diameter and depth of greater than 8 m and 2000 m respectively. Greater diameters are possible over shorter lengths with suitable ground conditions.The RBR900VF was designed and manufactured to specifications developed by Macmahon. This machine has the greatest thrust and torque capability of any machine in the world. It enables cutters to be more heavily loaded in the larger diameter heads and this is essential for efficient rock excavation. Additional features of the new machine include minimal manual handling to provide a safer working environment and higher strength steel for the drill rods providing additional safety margin.CITATION:Wood, R J, 2014. Results of experiments for dissolution of zinc by aeration of sphalerite in glass, copper, galvanised iron and stainless steel vessels of identical dimensions are reported. It was found that in a glass container dissolution of zinc reaches a maximum after 30 min aeration and then decreases whereas in the copper container dissolution remains nearly unchanged up to 30 min aeration and then increases. In the cases of galvanised iron and stainless steel containers zinc dissolution increased steadily with time up to 60 min aeration. It is suggested that the different rates of dissolution in glass and copper containers may be due to electro-chemical actions.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.

Collector and frother molecules in sulfide mineral flotation are thought to have separate roles in the flotation process, where the collector selectively hydrophobizes the mineral surface and the frother adsorbs onto the bubble surface, inhibiting bubble coalescence. Molecular interactions have been observed between these molecules which allow them to co-adsorb at each of the respective interfaces, improving pulp phase recovery. This study investigated the molecular interactions between sodium diethyl dithiophosphate (SDEDTP) and hexanol, and the mechanism by which these interactions improve the recovery of galena. In this study each of the respective interfaces were investigated for the adsorption of SDEDTP. The adsorption of SDEDTP on galena was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and isothermal titration calorimetry. At the air-water interface foam stability and pulp bubble coalescence was used to quantitatively discern if there are interactions between SDEDTP and hexanol. Microflotation and induction time experiments were performed to determine the effect of SDEDTP, hexanol and their mixtures on mineral recovery and bubble-particle attachment. The results of all these tests were collated to determine if SDEDTP-hexanol mixtures synergistically improve sulfide mineral recovery. It was found that SDEDTP reduced bubble coalescence in the pulp demonstrating activity at the airwater interface. Together SDEDTP and hexanol synergistically enhanced foam stability. This indicated that there are attractive molecular interactions between these reagents. Even though DTP did not adsorb onto galena, DTP-frother mixtures synergistically improved the recovery and attachment probability of this mineral. Adsorption studies with aeration showed that DTP in the presence of a frother transfers from the air-water interface to the galena mineral-water interface during bubble-particle collision. It was proposed that the transfer of hexanol through the thin film enhanced the kinetics of film thinning between the bubble and the particle by destabilising the thin film thus improving pulp phase mineral recovery.

The maximum gas emission into underground workings can be predicted by the use of established methods which have world wide recognition. Changes in gas emission and the influence of the gas and geological environments during longwall mining at Pacific Colliery, were found.to be a typical. The relationship between longwall mining and gassy conditions is found to vary from the European experience because of the different mining and geological conditions encountered, and the higher productivity achieved, by single longwall panels in Australia.

As I drove in from the airport on Sunday somebody said `On the right you will see Dun- troon, which is the military training school of Australia.' So I asked the driver, where did they get that name? `Oh,' he said, `from some people who built a house there. That was it's name- Duntroon.' It strikes a note with me because, that's the name of a 12th century castle on the west coast of Scotland where I spend what leisure hours I have and, therefore, it establishes the long connection between Australia and my native land. There is also a story I should tell you about the oil industry and its upsurge in Scotland recently which has resulted in great prosperity. And in Edinburgh, the walls of the banks are bulging-because of the incursion of foreign exchange and other resources.
