Investigation of standard tests used to establish the decrepitation rating of Western Australian iron ore showed scatter in results which could be reduced by textural type sampling. Testing of individual textural types resulted in separation.of a range of decrepitation behaviour patterns. No unique correlation was established between water content in goethite, or between any single mechanism and breakage in shock heating. The latter depends rather on several mechan- isms whose operation is controlled by the texture of the ore. Texture studies were used successfully to predict decrepitation behaviour which could be related to orebody structure for mine planning, and blending for sales or processing requirements.

The typical management systems used to address the issue of operating risk centre around technologies that identify, analyse and evaluate the risk factors. These logical systems such as HAZOPs, Fault Tree Analyses, etc rely heavily on technical considerations and process flow analysis. However, several research projects, across industries and countries have clearly shown that up to 80 per cent `operating risk' is determined by the actions of workers, supervisors and managers. Yet, most of the focus of risk management is on technical and procedural issues. This suggests that a significant imbalance exists in our management systems and that industries are unlikely to show significant improvement on current levels of safety performance. Effective risk management must include the intangible element of the organisation psychology towards risk. A practical and theoretically sound approach had been researched and developed in and for the mining industry. This paper describes the approach and methodologies applied at the Cosmo Howley Gold Mine in the Northern Territory, where an inclusive approach to managing financial and operating risk was followed. The Cosmo Howley Mine showed a dramatic reduction in lost time injuries and improvements in financial indices - providing conclusive evidence of the link between management effectiveness, safety and productivity. This `triangle' has often been the subject of speculation and theory. It is demonstrated in this paper how the management team of Cosmo Howley focused their practices and systems on the improvement of organisational dynamics, ensured tangible and clear focus on parameters of costs and safety and how the improvement process was managed. It is concluded that the improvement process did not require a `major re-engineering' of the organisation. The organisation culture changes that occurred were incremental, planned and effective. It entailed the implementation of sound risk management methodologies, and ensured that a significant emphasis was placed on an aspect that is defined as `organisational dynamics'.

Slag from the smelting of lead can contain up to 20 per cent zinc as an oxide. An understanding of the lead smelting process and of the subsequent fuming process for the recovery of zinc is enhanced by a knowledge of the activity coefficient behaviour of zinc oxide in smelting slags. The literature presents a wide range of contradictory values. This paper critically reviews the published data and outlines new measurements being made by the authors. A consistent set of zinc oxide activity coefficient data is presented for liquid slags within the ZnO-'FeO'-CaO-A1203-SiO2 system, through a combination of present and previous measurements.

Ore mineralization in Masara consists mainly of gold-silver veins, porphyry copper and pyrometasomatic deposits related to left-lateral movements along the Philip- pine fault system and a later stage of magmatism. These are hosted by pre-Tertiary volcanic flows and volcaniclastics, and comprise a temporal pattern of earlier peripheral copper zone, an intermediate mixed copper-gold area and a later central gold vein system within the Masara sector of the postulated volcanic field. Gold ore emplacement occurred in at least two stages, and shows gradations from a lower mesothermal-epithermal phase passing into a typical epithermal zone, and finally into a truncated, or poorly developed, upper level thermal spring deposit. Orebodies are closely associated with hot springs, solfatara and several magma- related masses, emphasizing their inherent linkage with a geothermal system in the Area.

Controlled recirculation of nine ventila- tion air is becoming an acceptable practice world-wide. A brief review of operating and planned schemes is given which illustrates the various purposes for using controlled recircu- lation in different types of mines. A de- tailed description is given of the operating and proposed schemes on South African gold mines. This is followed by a description of some theoretical and experimental work which has recently been carried out into certain important aspects of controlled recircula- tion. This includes: safety systems, dust filtration, blast contaminant removal, radia- tion hazards and the development of an expert computer program for the design of controlled recirculation systems.

Heavy media separation serves to upgrade mill feed and reduce unit operating costs, allowing ores to be mined which could other wise be uneconomic. At the Aberfoyle mine at Rossarden in north-east Tasmania, a simple heavy media operation using a converted Akins screw classifier as a separating vessel, removes barren quartz from mineralised material. At the Cleveland mine at Luina on the west coast of Tasmania a more complex ore mix requires a versatile operation combining hydro-dynamic and static separation equipment to provide an efficient beneficiation circuit. The two operations are briefly described with a background of basic heavy media separ- ation practice.

The magmatic arcs of SE Asia and SW Pacific contain some of the worldÆs major magmatic-hydrothermal gold deposits. Most gold deposits in SE Asian and SW Pacific arcs formed during periods of plate reorganisation rather than during periods of normal or steady state subduction. These plate reorganisations were caused initially by the collisions of the Australian Craton with the Philippines-Halmahera Arc and the Ontong Java Plateau with the Melanesian Arc at ~25 Ma. A second Mid-Miocene period of mineralisation accompanied plate reorganisation following maximum rotation or extrusion of Indochina and cessation of spreading in the South China Sea at ~17 Ma. However, the vast majority of deposits from New Zealand to Taiwan formed since 7 Ma during an important period of tectonic reorganisation that accompanied and followed changes in the relative motion between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates between ~8 and 3.5 Ma. Magmatism in unusual tectonic settings produced the most abundant and largest deposits with many deposits associated with high-K calc-alkaline, shoshonite, adakite and alkaline magmatism. In particular peak mineralisation appears related to melting of sub-arc lithosphere that has been previously modified by subduction. During large-scale plate reorganisation this can occur towards or at the end of a period of normal subduction, following arc collision or accompanying subduction reversal at approximately the same time in different parts of a complex system of arcs such as in SE Asia and the SW Pacific.

Pinched Sluices, in a variety of guises, are used extensively for the separation of minerals according to density. In the authors' work a pilot-scale sluice has been constructed with provision for splitting the discharge stream into a number of layers. The composition and flowrate of the stream can thus be analysed as a function of depth and the results presented graphically. The effects of such parameters as total flowrate, pulp composition and particle size on overall performance can be clearly seen from such data.

The Copper Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited treats on average 18 000 tonnes/day of chalcopyrite ore containing typically three per cent copper. The main gangue minerals are iron sulphides (-13 per cent) and non sulphide gangue (-78 per cent). In August, 1991, the comminution flowsheet was changed from a conventional circuit (crusher/rod mill/two stage ball milling) to a modem circuit (fully autogenous grinding/one stage ball milling). The 80 per cent passing size of the flotation feed with the conventional circuit was 125 microns. The Copper Concentrator has two parallel grinding lines, two roughing and scavenging flotation lines, and common cleaning, recleaning and retreatment sections. During the first six weeks of the installation phase, one of the two flotation lines was fed by the conventional grinding circuit and the other by the autogenous grinding circuit. Data from parallel surveys and historical data are used to analyse the rougher/scavenger flotation performance before and after the change. The solid and mineral distributions of the flotation feed, the pulp chemistry and the reagent requirements are compared. The mineral liberation before and after the installation of autogenous grinding is compared on a sized basis using data from the 14 consecutive months before, and the seven months after the change. Liberation was measured using the QEM*SEM(*) instrument. The overall effect of the new grinding circuit on the plant metallurgy is also assessed using the copper recovery values, the dilution of the final concentrate and the distribution of copper losses in the final tailings. Material hardness and environmental factors can limit or restrict conventional blasting techniques and this has led to advancements in the performance and efficiency of ripping. Not all materials can be ripped, however today's technology and experience can help make a reasonable prediction. A ripping versus blasting decision will depend on the total volume of material to be moved, the production capabilities and costs of the ripping tractor(s) and on the size and relative efficiency of drilling and Blasting.

Very large reserves of gas are contained in coal. Because of the low permeability of the coal gas flow rates are very low. Fracturing of the coal can be achieved by use of the nitrogen - foam frac techniques described but the flow rates after fracturing are not sufficient to support economic development. Fracturing of the seams in the Bowen Basin was as predicted but in the Sydney Basin no trace of the fracture could be found when development proceeded past the fractured well. Testing of coal samples has provided some insight into parameters affecting desorption Rates.

A key aspect of seismic management for narrow vein stoping of the west zone at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine has been the development of a fully remote extraction method that does not require personnel access to sill drives within the orebody once stoping commences. Initially, sill driving within the reef is undertaken in a conventional fashion under geological control. Sill drives are developed at a vertical backs-to-floor height ranging from 7 - 12 m. This mining stage includes all activities prior to the commencement of stoping, after which no personnel enter the unstoped section of the sill drive at any time for any purpose. The key aspect of the remote mining cycle is the use of footwall drill drives paralleling the ore drive at a minimum separation of 6 m under survey control. These drives provide the platform for fan drilling of the orebody. Up to 20 m strike panels are blasted in a single shot using electronic blasting techniques. Ore is mucked from the extraction level sill drive using tele-remote loaders. Aerials for tele-remote operation are installed through boreholes from the footwall drive, negating the need for personnel access to the sill drive. Once mucking of a stoping panel is complete, a laser scanning survey instrument is used to survey the final void for subsequent design and production reconciliation purposes. The survey instrument is mounted in the bucket of the tele-remote loader, and is also operated remotely. Finally, tele-remote loaders are used to dump waste rock fill from the upper sill drive. A system of flags and cameras installed in boreholes from the footwall drive assists the operator in locating the live stope edge during the filling cycle, again negating the need for personnel access.

Roof conditions at Southern Colliery, the second longwall mine to be established at German Creek, were found to be much stronger and more massive than at the earlier longwall mine on the lease. Investigations were made to ascertain the level of face support required for longwall extraction under the changed geological conditions. Geotechnical information was provided from drillholes and highwall exposures. Downhole geophysical logs, notably the sonic velocity log, were used to obtain a distribution of the major lithological units over the mine area. A representative type section of the strata and geomechanical properties was compiled to form the basis for numerical modelling. Two-dimensional finite element methods were used to predict strata movements and chock loads under cantilevered roof conditions. The model incorporated a 6.3 in thick roof beam either bonded or detached, with either a 2 in or 5 in overhang. The solid rib, immediate roof, chock support and goaf were modelled as distinct parts, in addition a front abutment stress profile, derived from three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity analysis, was superimposed on the model.

The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. A series of experiments was carried out to investigate the solubilities of copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in silica-saturated iron silicate slags under controlled oxygen partial pressures at 1200 and 1250¦C. Molten copper containing each of the above elements was kept in contact with a slag in a silica crucible for 24 or 48 hours to attain equilibrium. No me- chanical entrapment of metal into the slag was observed. The appearance of the magnetite phase in the slag was avoided by holding oxygen potentials at substantially lower values than that evaluated from available data on iron silicate slags. Solubilities of copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in slags were plotted against oxy- gen potentials and both oxidic and atomic types of dissolution were found, except in the case of arsenic, from the dependencies of the solubili- ties on the oxygen potential and from positive intercepts of regression lines when extra- polated to zero oxygen potential. The dissolu- tion of arsenic seemed mostly oxidic. Distri- bution coefficients of arseò,ic, antimony and bismuth between copper and slag are also Discussed.

Current low prices for many metals mean that deposits have to be mined at high cut-offs (relative to their mean grade), which means that only a small percentage of mining blocks are above cut-off. Worse, at such high cut-offs, the blocks above cut-off are usually not grouped into convenient clumps for mining; they tend to be split into small isolated patches that are difficult to reach and hence expensive to extract. Companies wishing to acquire mineral properties have to be able to work out quickly what percentage of blocks are above cut-off and what can effectively be mined given the mining method envisaged. Moreover they need this information within a relatively short-time. The work presented here relates to typical South African gold mines (ie tabular orebodies) but the long-term objective is to develop tools for quantifying the impact of reserve breakup at high cut-offs for a wide range of underground mines including those that are not tabular. The mining method and the sampling procedure determine whether ore blocks can effectively be located and extracted economically. This project studied the impact of these two factors on the recoverable reserves for Witwatersrand gold mines. In order to be repeatable, the tests were done on numerical models of the deposit obtained by geostatistical simulations. To ensure realism, the orebody model and the mining scenarios were based on a specific mine. The recoverable reserves (ore tonnage above cut-off, the corresponding metal quantity and the average grade) were calculated for a wide range of cut-offs for four mining scenarios, as well as for the base case of free selection: ò Scenario 1: Blocks are taken if their true grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline (no information effect, no marginal blocks). ò Scenario 2: In addition to the accessible pay blocks, adjoining marginal blocks are taken (no information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Scenario 3: Blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline. Here the estimator is the average of the face samples (information effect, no marginal blocks): ò Scenario 4: Accessible pay blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off. Adjoining marginal blocksare also taken (information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Free selection: All blocks whose true grade is above cut-off are taken irrespective of their accessibility. Roasting of sulphide and sulph-arsenide gold ores produces unwanted emission of sulphur and arsenic oxides, and a less than complete recovery of gold. Pyrite loses sulphur and arsenopyrite loses arsenic at a useful rate at temperatures of 600¦C and above in an inert atmosphere. Sulphur and arsenic driven off can be condensed before entering the atmosphere. During the process, solid-solution gold redistributes itself on internal surfaces of the resulting iron sulphide. Two subsequent processing options may be used; direct cyanidation of the porous sulphide resulting from the anoxic pyrolysis, or a second-stage roast to oxidise the remaining iron sulphide. The first option may be viable under certain conditions of pyrolysis. The two-stage option has an environmental advantage over the traditional roast because it reduces oxide vapour emissions by 50 per cent. The second stage may provide nearly enough energy to sustain the entire process.

The paragenesis of the Escuzar Mine (Andalusia-Spain) comprises: ò major constituents: celestite and carbonated minerals (abundant calcite and less frequent strontianite). ò minor constituents: sulphates (gypsum and anhydrite), clays and some iron oxides and hydroxides. The average content is at about 60 per cent SrSO4. Since liberation size was fine (from 30 to 50 ¦m), the flotation method was chosen. Laboratory batch tests have shown the relevance of using alkylsulphates with as long as possible hydrocarbon chains. The recovery obtained led to an expected 95 per cent SrSO4 concentrate with nearly 70 per cent recovery. Pilot plant tests (160 kg/h) have confirmed these results and attained a recovery of more than 65 per cent of a 96 per cent SrSO4 concentrate. Extrapolation to the industrial scale (14 t/h) has been successfully carried out : up to 600 t of a concentrate at more than 95 per cent SrSO4 has been obtained. Non optimised recovery has already reached 60 per cent for a 97 per cent SrSo4 concentrate.

I must tell you at the outset that I come to this conference deeply disturbed at the `role of Government in international dealings in mineral and energy resources'. I am disturbed by the confusion that now passes for policy. I am disturbed by the short- range view of critical problems taken by a majority of Governments. I am equally disturbed by the even shorter range of view taken by a growing army of industries. Many of them clamour for Governments to solve their problems in a specific way, with little regard for any other sector but their own-and with even less regard for the fact that every time a Government takes over some of their responsibilities they surrender some of their freedom. I would not say that longer range views don't exist. But I would say that they don't prevail at the present time. Instead, we are seeing the con- stant development of many policies for individual problems which don't tackle the fundamental causes. We must get back to basics without delay.
