In China, there are approximately 3,000,000 million m3 of gas (methane) included in highly gassy mines liable to coal/gas outbursts; the amount of methane pre-drainage possible is estimated at 400,000 - 500,000 million m3. At present, methane drainage has been carried out in 110 mines with a total amount of 19,000 million m3 methane produced during the period of 198 1- 1986. The methane drainage in coal mines of China can be divided into three types: from adjacent seams, from working face seams and from goafs, all with good results. In recent years, general attention has been paid to integrating methane drainage into the mining system but methane drainage from old goafs has to some extent been developed as well.

The SMELT-2 package is specifically designed to perform on-line simulation of smelting processes. This paper describes its application to the simulation of continuous matte converting followed by reductive slag cleaning in SIROSMELT reactors. The matte, containing 50% Cu is assumed to be produced at the rate of 20 tph in a continuous matte smelting furnace such as an Outokumpu Flash Furnace, Noranda or Sirosmelt reactor. Two alternative fluxing strategies in the converter are examined, namely: ò conventional silicate slags, ò calcium ferrite slags, and the flow sheets associated with each strategy are discussed. A regular solution model is used in the present study to account for the variations in the activity coefficients of components in the slag.

Multi-seam mining under the western portion of Lake Macquarie NSW commenced in 1982. Up to three seams separated by partings ranging from 10 to 30 metres are mined simultaneously by Newcom Collieries. A feature of these workings is the minimal bedrock cover, which ranges from 130 metres down to only 40 metres. "Surface" subsidence control has an over-riding influence on the design of the workings. Subsidence considerations govern both the selection of the mining method and the dimensioning of the workings. To date, workings have been designed in accordance with the "Wardell Guidelines for Mining Under Tidal Waters". These guidelines are tabulated and evaluated in the light of advances in rock mechanics knowledge and local subsidence data collected since the Guidelines were formulated in 1974. The local and regional stability of shallow workings designed according to the Guidelines is evaluated.

Based on twenty years of experiences of applying computers in mine water engineering in Hungary, a program package was developed for home utilization and for other users abroad as well. This program package has been adapted to the CAD System of Coal Mining of COMECON countries. The main features of the "mine water subsystem" in the CAD System of Coal Mining and short descriptions of the key programs of the package are presented in this paper. Foreword The serious water problems of Hungarian mining pressed and/or stimulated its professionals to apply computers for supporting their problem-solutions. The first trials of these computer applications in mine water engineering were dated from the sixties. Owing to its twenty years of experiences in computer appli- cations in mine water engineering the Central Institute for the Development of Mining in Hungary was requested to work out the "Subsystem of Mine Water" for the Computer Aided Design System ('CAD) of Coal Mines in COMECON countries. This paper gives a brief presentation on the main features of this "subsystem"with reference to significant components.

Human habitation of the Pacific Rim began when mankind began migrations out of its place of origin in the Rift Valley of Central Africa c. 4million years ago. This migration was erratic and largely controlled by advances and retreat of the various Ice Ages which, while limiting advances in areas of intense cold, at the same time aided migration thro-ugh the creation of land bridges as ocean levels declined during periods of glacial advance (Fig.l).Mankind began its trek to the Pacific from Africa across India then north into southern China and south into Indonesia (Fig.2). In part, these migrations stimulated early technological develop-ments to fulfill needs and adapt to environmental conditions; thus, these nomads developed stone and bone tools, animal skin clothing and the use of caves and other simple shelters. The earliest evid-ence of mankind's use of fire can be found at Zhou-koudaian near Beijing, c.400,000 BP.From China, the completion of the Pacific Rim's population can be attributed to the last Ice Age that dropped the ocean level by more than 300 feet and created land bridges about 40,000 BP allowing migration across the Bering Strait into Alaska and to Australia from Indonesia. The American migration reached Mexico about 30,000 BP, and by 6000 BP the occupancy of the Pacific Rim was complete when the first human settlers reached the southern tip of Chile.

Early in 1990, Pancontinental Resources (Base Metals) Pty Ltd commenced flotation treatment of ore from the complex copper-lead-zinc sulphide orebody at Thalanga, 65 km west of Charters Towers in North Queensland. The orebody consists mainly of primary sulphide ore but also contains a substantial proportion of supergene ores which are being processed during the first year of operations. The supergene ores are of three main types, designated as A, B, and C. Supergene A ores are essentially copper ores, containing little lead and zinc, while B and C ores are copper-lead-zinc ores with different degrees of alteration of the original chalcopyrite and different ratios of copper to zinc content. Copper is present in the supergene ores mainly as chalcocite, digenite and covellite. Lead and zinc occur mainly as galena and sphalerite respectively. This paper describes the development of flotation plant practice, aided by laboratory testing, to process the supergene ores. The major challenge in treating these ores is that a varying proportion of the sphalerite is naturally activated and is not easily depressed in flotation by the conventional zinc depressants.

The impulsive loading tests under confining pressure were performed to investigate the dynamic fracture properties of rocks in a triaxial stress state. The apparatus in this study consists of the Split Hopkinson pressure bar, a pressure vessel and hydraulic actuator. Magnetite-quartzite and limestone were selected for the test. The stress-strain curves and fracture strength under confining pressure obtaind in the tests were compared with those of the conventional triaxial tests. Building a new tunnel to accommodate CN North America's needs or double stacked container traffic for the next 100 years represents new and unprecedented challenges. Innovative approaches to contracting, especially the Negotiated Compressed Process (NCP), TBM design, project management, and the regulatory and approval process, were all required to deliver a new tunnel to meet the needs of CN North America within the approved completion schedule of 33 months compared to a traditional approach of 45 to 48 months. The NCP resulted in trimming a full 12 months from the project schedule with an anticipated saving of direct and indirect costs.

The design of most underground mining machines shows little evidence of regard for ergonomic principles and operator comfort. Likewise, efficiency and ease of operation often appear to have been given little consideration in machines where ruggedness and simplicity have tended to dictate the configuration. Improvements in productivity are amongst the benefits to be gained by a different approach to machine design. The paper describes the philosophy and features of a test bed Load-Haul-Dump Vehicle undergoing trials at Mount Isa Mines. This machine is the outcome of a Research and Development Programme conducted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Queensland and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The diesel powered test bed features an enclosed, air conditioned cabin, with a suspended operator's control station and electrically operated controls. An electronically controlled hydrostatic transmission incorporating wheel slip control, is another innovation. The performance and operator acceptance of the machine has led to adoption of most of the concepts in a new machine now being put into production.

The 372 MW Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project is a peaking power scheme located in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. The main features of the project include an 84 m high roller compacted concrete dam; two weirs which divert flows from adjacent catchments via transfer tunnels into the main reservoir; an underground power waterway; and an underground power station complex comprising three large caverns with connecting tunnels approximately 240 m below surface level. The project includes approximately 25 km of tunnels excavated in fresh granite rock mass with some distinct shear zones of weaker material. The majority of the tunnels are being excavated using drill and blast, with the two transfer tunnels being excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM).This paper focuses on the design and construction of the Telanok underground power station complex and also some aspects of the design for the headrace tunnel. Topics covered include geological site investigations including in situ measurements of rock stresses; development of a geological model and parameters for rock support design; three-dimensional modelling to assess interactions between the caverns to optimise rock support; design of a rock anchored crane beam; construction of the caverns and design of the unlined headrace tunnel taking into account hydraulic jacking and operational pressure fluctuations.CITATION:Drowley, L, Gaida, B and Chapman, B, 2014. In the present work, the process of dephosphorisation of stainless steel was developed in laboratory scale by adopting a high frequence induction furnace, using BaCO3 base flux. By using BaCO3 - CaO - BaC12 - Fe2O3 Flux of about 110 g/Kg-metal, 30 per cent dephosphorisation degree was obtained a stainless steel containing 18,8 per cent Cr and carbon between 0,08 and 2,0 per cent. In addition, a dessulfurisation degree of 89 per cent was achieved too.

Host minerals for gold have been of great interest to exploration geologists and metallurgists for a variety of reasons. The depletion of high grade ores in many parts of the world requires that greater attention be given to the study of host min-erals for gold. Some host minerals have been employed in exploration as traces for gold. They are also essential in the design of extraction processes for treating gold ores.This paper reviews the mineralogy of important gold deposits of Papua New Guinea (PNG), Indonesia and New Zealand and focuses attention on the ore minerals and rock-forming minerals that host gold.

The Black Star and Racecourse orebodies below 15 level contain a major portion of the primary silver-lead-zinc ore reserves of 56 million tonnes at 150 g/t Ag, 6.4% Pb and 6.5% Zn at Isa Mine. Extraction from this area is scheduled to begin in the early 1980's. Mining in this block will be quite com- plicated as the ore is contained in a dozen separate orebodies varying in width from 3 m to 20 m with only narrow barren pillars between them in some cases. Mining objectives which consider metal recovery, costs, environmental and safety factors, operating requirements and rock mechanics are used to compare proposals. The planning work involved in formulating mining proposals considers disposition of reserves, scheduling factors, sequence of extraction, extraction methods, haulage set-up and ventilation requirements.

Over the past fifteen years, horizontal drilling in coal seams for advance degasification has become an established practice in the United States of America. Consolidation Coal Company pioneered the development of the horizontal drilling system and licensed the technology in the U.S. A. and to Du Pont (Australia) for commercial production. This paper discusses the most recent developments in the equipment design, especially the borehole telemetry system, known as the Downhole Drill Monitor (DDM).

Ore samples from the South, Central and North ore-bodies of the King Cassilis Mine, near Omeo, Victoria, were broken and transported to Melbourne for experimental metallurgical treatment. A microscopical examination of individual unoxidised specimens, selected from these samples, was undertaken in order to thro'w as much light as possible on the occurrence of the gold which forms the valuable economic mineral in the ore.The following descriptions are the outcome' of this examination and show that very minute particles of free gold are mechanically associated with the sulphides. While the gold may be separated from the transparent gangue minerals by the flotation of the sulphides, the, actual size of the particles indicates that it is impossible to separate all the gold from the sulphides by grinding the ore to pass through a screen of 200 mesh in which the average width of the holes is 0.063 mm. Chemical disintegration of the sulphides is essential to free all the gold particles and render them available to the attack of chlorine or of a solvent.It is interesting to recall that a metallurgical investigation on the Cassilis ore in the same district by K. This paper reviews the issues of mining machinery automation with special emphasis on underground applications. Automation is desirable because it offers the following advantages: ò increased safety by reducing human exposure to hazards of underground mining; ò higher productivity; and ò reduced wear of equipment. In spite of these advantages and in spite of numerous attempts over the past several decades, mining automation has been a difficult proposition, partly because no two mining operations are exactly alike and these operations are carried out in an unpredictable environment. This is the main difference between automation in factories and in mines and that is why mining automation has been lagging so far behind factory automation. Automation is possible only when the machine 'knows' its workspace. In a factory, this workspace can be 'described' to the machine because it is sufficiently controlled. In a mine, the environment undergoes continuous change and the only way the machine can 'know' its workspace is through real-time sensing.

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. It details the geotechnical investigation work undertaken to mitigate the geotechnical risks and the challenges and learnings from the project including the benefits of close collaboration between the parties involved.CITATION:Sidea, D and Brettell, T M, 2017. In 2015, MMG Limited commenced further action to improve operating margins and establish a blueprint for future growth in the Australian environment. This action was taken in the context of weakening metal prices and high input costs that arose during the Australian minerals boom.MMG was formed in June 2009 following the purchase of the majority of assets of OZ Minerals Limited by China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) through its subsidiary China Minmetals Non-ferrous Metals Co Ltd (CMN).Since formation MMG has been implementing a business model to deliver a standard way of operating. The overarching purpose of the business model is to enable fast integration of acquired assets to realise improved productivity and performance. CMN established MMG as a vehicle to reach their growth targets through further development or acquisition of mineral assets in jurisdictions external to mainland China.The business model is underpinned by the MMG operating model. The operating model defines how MMG is arranged to deliver the company strategy.This paper describes the application of the operating model to the formation of the Australian operations into a single business unit from multiple stand-alone operating sites. The development and impact of the business model on MMG’s performance is also presented.The extension of the operating model to the Australian operations has led to improvement in safety performance, direct costs and productivity. These improvements have been achieved through reducing duplication, simplification of systems and rapid deployment of improvement initiatives.The successful implementation of the operating model to Australian operations strengthens the platform for further growth. For fully effective information to be obtained from exploratory drilling for coal, drilling programs should be planned systemati- cally in successive stages, on the basis of existing geological criteria and information collated during each stage. In this way, drilling can be executed with optimum economy, aided by auxiliary geophysical techniques wherever these may be appropriate. The object- ives of the programs must ultimately include an adequate assessment of mining conditions as well as thorough evaluation of coal quality. The first of these objectives is not always appreciated by both geologists and mining engineers engaged in supervising drilling pro- grams, often resulting in the need for more additional drilling and more expense than would otherwise be required. To achieve all of these objectives as effectively as possible, the drilling should be supervised by well qualified personnel experienced in working in a multi- dicipline, professional mining, geological and engineering team.

Many underground mining methods rely on blasted rock moving under gravity to report to extraction points. Mining of orebodies dipping between 20 - 45 degrees poses a unique challenge for mining engineers in that a dip angle in this range will not allow the movement of broken ore down the footwall to the mucking horizon utilising gravity. This is more so in cases where the natural angle of repose of the rock is less than the dip of the orebody. Hence, innovative mining systems are necessary to mine this type of orebodies. In Australia, the method of uphole retreat panel stoping is commonly used to extract orebodies in the dip range of 20 - 45 degrees and thickness range of 5 - 15 m. In the Zambian Copperbelt a method called continuous retreat updip stoping is used for orebodies with similar dips and thicknesses. The mechanised form of this mining method has potential for application in the metalliferous mining industry in Australia. In this study a comparison is made between mechanised updip (MUDS) and transverse retreat stoping (TRS) methods. A hypothetical nickel sulphide orebody located in Western Australia is used as case study. The net present value for mechanised updip stoping is seven per cent higher than that of transverse retreat stoping based on the assumptions applied. Initial results of this study indicate that mechanised updip stoping can be adopted for Australian mining conditions. However, lack of significant local experience with the method is often cited as a reason for not adopting it even in situations where it is clearly the best option.
