The Whitsunday Volcanics occupy most of the offshore islands from the Whitsunday Group, southeastwards through the Cumberland and Northumberland Groups, possibly extending to the mainland adjacent to Shoalwater Bay, a distance of 370 km. Some of the islands of this group are granitic, but preliminary Rb-Sr data indicate these to represent Permo-Triassic basement. Cretaceous volcanism is interpreted to have occurred during initial rifting prior to the continental breakup of northeastern Australia and subsequent development of the Tasman Basin.The volcanics comprise mainly lithic ignimbrites, with local development of inter-bedded surge and bedded tuff, accretionary lapilli tuffs, lithic concentration zones, and lag deposits. Isolated fluidual rhyolite and dacite domes occur. The deposits are considered subaerially emplaced. A Rb-Sr isochron age for volcanism of 110 Ma is determined from new data. The total thickness of the volcanics is unknown, but a minimum thickness of 4-5 km on Whitsunday Is. is suggested. Eruptive centres are inferred to be distributed throughout the volcanic zone. The volcanics are cut by numerous, dominantly near N-S, dykes ranging from dolerite through to rhyolite in composition.Chemically, the volcanics and dykes exhibit a continuous range of compositions from basaltic andesite, through andesite, dacite, to rhyolite, with minor more alkalic compositions. Phenocryst mineralogy in the silicic rocks is mainly plagioclase, augite, and Fe-Ti oxides, with less frequent quartz and hornblende occurrence. Sr and Nd isoptic compositions for volcanics and dykes are close to mantle values. These data are tentatively interpreted in terms of a lower crustal magma arc source separated from the mantle only a geologically short time prior to Cretaceous magmatism.

Technological advancements in mineral processing have increased the feasibility of refining low-grade ores. Because of this progression and continual depletion of high-grade ore deposits, much larger volumes of waste material are produced. At the same time, increasing environmental legislation and cost competitiveness dictate that these wastes be disposed of in a manner that is both environmentally acceptable and economically viable. To achieve these criteria, many mineral processing industries are dewatering waste streams in order to reduce the volume of tailings and increase water and reagent recovery. The subsequent dry disposal of these highly concentrated mineral tailings requires a thorough understanding of the effects of dewatering on the flow characteristics. Dry disposal represents a paradigm shift in engineering. The tailings are engineered to suit the disposal requirements, as opposed to engineering a facility to accommodate the tailings. It is therefore important to understand how the material properties and operational parameters can be modified to produce the desired tailings flow and deposition characteristics. As concentrated suspensions usually exhibit non-Newtonian behaviour, determination of the disposal plant operating conditions requires a thorough understanding of the rheological characteristics of the material. The implementation and optimisation of dry disposal methods involves three concurrent and interdependent rheological studies to determine:the concentration required to achieve the optimum spreading and drying characteristics of the tailings once deposited; the optimum conditions for pipeline transport; and the feasibility of dewatering the slurry to the required concentration. The paper presents an overview of the issues pertinent to management of the flow properties and processing of dewatered waste streams.

In undertaking the dubious, but oft-times necessary business of prediction, thr, historian will base his/her forecasts on tr-ands of the past, the speculator on current events, and the politician on what he/she would dearly like to see happen. The thoughts expressed in this address seem to have arisen through exercising a combination of all three of those philosophies but, hopefully, with a smat- tering of pragmatism.

"The precise formulation of a geometallurgical optimisation problem is by necessity a simplification of reality. It includes implicit choices such as data availability or mining block geometry. Additional data can be orebody data, production data or market data. Often these choices are predetermined by the software, the workflow or the corporate culture, and as such are not even queried. There are several aspects that might play a role in the optimisation. They include not only the spatial model on which the selection of mining blocks and the potential mining sequence are based, but also the complexity of the processing model, the way in which uncertainty is treated, the scope of responsibility and the complexity of the model. In addition the timing of the optimisation and the availability (or lack thereof) of information will influence the outcome of any optimisation.We show that different modelling choices and different model formulations for the same mine can lead to very different processing choices, substantially different net present values (NPV), opposite investment decisions and so to overall different values for the entire operation. The selection of adequate simplifications and corresponding formulations for the optimisation problem is thus an important task in itself.For this purpose we introduce a method for quantifying the impact of certain simplifications prior to the optimisation. For example, the effect of mining block choices depends mainly on the spatial structure and the structure of the processing gain function. Both can be quantified beforehand. The Ambuklao hydroelectric dam was originally constructed in the 1950s in the remote and mountainous region of the northern Philippines. Following its construction the dam has suffered heavily due to siltation and a partial collapse of the intake structure due to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the region in 1990. Between the years 1990 and 1999 the power station progressively lost its capacity to generate power. In 1999 the owner took the power station out of commission. The power station remained idle over the next 12 years. In 2008 the power station was sold to a new owner who commissioned the rehabilitation works.The rehabilitation project restored the operating status of the power station in June 2011 and increased its capacity from 75 MW to 105 MW. The civil contract of the rehabilitation project required the construction of a new intake structure behind an in situ rock coffer dam on the edge of the existing reservoir, new 6.2?m diameter × 124?m deep blind sunk shaft behind the intake structure, which connects to a new 6.8?m horseshoe profile headrace tunnel that ultimately connected onto the existing vertical penstocks which feed three No 35 MW Horizontal Turbines rated at 155?m head.The unique challenge in rehabilitating this existing hydropower station involved finding solutions that would conclusively deal with the challenging geological and hydrogeological conditions associated with excavating new tunnels and a drop shaft beneath a live dam.McConnell Dowell was awarded the civil works package for the rehabilitation works in August 2008. The Ambuklao rehabilitation program took 33 months to complete.Over 600?m of tunnels were excavated in highly weathered and often challenging geotechnical conditions via drill and blast with the extensive use of high-pressure fissure grouting to control groundwater ingress that was surcharged by the dam.This paper focuses on the use of high-pressure fissure grouting that took place to enable the excavation of the new waterway system and intake structure.CITATION:Bowskill, A and Harrison, C, 2014. Polymetallic hydrothermal veins of the Western Cascades are hosted in propylitically altered Tertiary volcanics of calc-alkaline affinity and (or) in nearby, altered, and compositionally similar plutons. Ores from shallow and now abandoned mines produced mostly gold and were considered to be of epithermal origin. However, recent discovery of breccia and porphyry types of Cu-Mo mineralisation and other data suggest that the deposits of this terrane vary systematically both regionally, south to north, and locally, high to low altitudes. The evidence includes changes in (1) size, composition, and complexity of plutons, (2) types of mineral deposits; (3) assemblages of alteration and ore minerals; (4) trace metal geochemistry of host rocks; and (5) fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope data. They collectively imply a consanguineous origin of vein, breccia, and disseminated-veinlet types of mineralisation by magmatic hydrothermal processes.

On the 17th November, 1964, a new No., 2 lead blast furnace was blown in at Port Pirie. The furnace departed from previous designs by incorporating a centrally located continuous tapper for both lead bullion and slag. The use of a central tapper permitted a simple and effective layout for the handling of both products. Considerable development was necessary to bring the furnace to its present level of efficiency. Units vital to the continu- ous operation were developed to allow quick replacement, thus ensuring high time efficiency under varied operating and maintenance conditions. The furnace was designed with the following objectives in mind, 1. increased crucible life, 2. elimination of oxygen for slag tapping, 3. higher temperature slag for fuming operations-, 4. less operator skill needed, 5. reduced tapping tool consumption, 6. elimination of settler skull and scrap lead, 7. better control of blast air distributi.nn. The Pine Creek gold mining development consists of a 1000000 tonne/yr open cut mine, a carbon-in-pulp processing plant and support facilities. The operation is located at Pine Creek, 230 km south of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The mine was officially opened in late October 1985, having been designed and constructed in less than twelve months, despite front end expenditure constraints and unseasonal cyclonic rains shortly after commencement of site activity. Non-traditional methods and attitudes were required to be adopted by both Engineer and Owner to successfully bring the project from preliminary design through construction and commissioning in a minimum time. Those areas which differ from the more traditional approaches to Project Management are examined together with a review of the advantages and penalties of these methods.

"In the design and operation of mineral processing plants, knowledge of the variability of ore properties and that of the expected metallurgical performance within the orebody is of great importance in order to avoid both production constraints due to inadequate design and less than expected metallurgical performance during operation. Of the many properties that determine the performance of downstream separation processes, such as flotation, gravity separation and leaching etc the liberation characteristics are of primary importance.Current methods of evaluating liberation characteristics of ores such as the use of Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and QEMSCAN techniques are expensive and suffer from the drawback that these tests are performed on comminuted particles at a given grind size and/or samples of product streams. This problem could be overcome by developing predictive models of liberation that can predict the grade distribution of comminuted products at any grind size based on texture of the parent rock. This paper discusses a procedure that has been developed to predict liberation using information obtained from a sample of the parent rock such as drill core, based on Barbery’s liberation models. The required characteristic statistical functions have been evaluated from image analysis techniques using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the parent rock and narrowly sized comminuted particles. Such information can then be used in a predictive model to predict or explain the variability of metallurgical performance at various grind sizes used in future operating plants. The model will predict not only the valuable mineral liberation but also gangue liberation, which will be useful to those who are looking to remove liberated gangue from comminution circuits.CITATION:Subasinghe, G K N, and Dunne, R, 2016. There are serious problems in forecast- ing accurately and achieving this goal depends on good quality information, correct assumpt- ions and sound analysis. planner. The forecaster must focus attention on a number of key areas of interest. These areas include major economic trends and changing GNP structure, consumption time series, end-use consumption patterns and substitution potential, accurately updating data bases (up to 5 years ahead), random factor estimation and examination of both long term and secondary mine potential. While metal price forecasting has suffered due to recent uncertainties, with increased importance on planning tools and cost analyses, it is still a necessary function. Forecasting is subject to the real world and the metal industry is made up of imperfect markets in a dynamic state. The real world provides the challenge to improve the accuracy of forecasting.

Over the last five years Du Pont (Australia) Ltd has developed a commercial range of new generation emulsion based explosives concurrently with the development of new explosives-placement systems. The paper outlines Du Pont's emulsion technology and history of product development from the initial emulsions (Tovex E & EL) to emulsion/ANFO blends (Tovex BE) through to the most recent development of Du Pont's SOL emulsion component. The paper also outlines the development of materials handling systems on site to load waterproof bulk explosives from the original pumper trucks through to the multipurpose agitator bowl blending and pumping units at the heart of Du Pont's SOL emulsion system currently available within Australia. The last section deals with some of the more important features of enhanced agitator bowl truck designs and outlines examples of the complete SOL emulsion system and methods of operations currently practiced at specific mines within the Bowen Basin coalfields.

To respond to ever-increasing challenges, mining companies have been experimenting with new business models and technologies in order to speed mine development, production, processing and transport. The various experiments involve mobile access to data, intelligent sensors, advanced analytics, virtual collaboration, virtual reality, automated equipment, remote operations centres and strategic partnerships. A synthesis of all these components creates a ænetwork effectÆ that can dramatically improve the overall effectiveness the entire operation. The concept of the Network Centric Mine borrows from a variety of industries, including defence, aerospace, aviation, petroleum, utilities and manufacturing. Central to the concept are improvements to the way we connect people, process, information and technology, resulting in a more highly collaborative business model, with roles and processes designed to take advantage of new technology. The components of the mining operation act as a connected network aimed at a common goal, regardless of the boundaries of organisation and location.The design of this new organisational ecosystem needs to take into account the recent advances that enable the æplug and playÆ integrated collaborative environment, including cloud computing, mobile devices and social networking, as well as advances in augmented reality, robotics, geo-location, digital labelling, simulation and analytics. However, the most consistent lesson from other industries is the need to properly enable the behaviour and process changes necessary for success.Benefits from adopting a network centric approach include the more effective use of scarce expertise, improved data and information analysis, reduced process variance, and more informed and faster decision-making. The future of mining will see more technology savvy workers who will drive the adoption of new processes. A new watersoluble binder for mineral ore pellets has been developed by the sulfonation of bituminous materials. A highly effective binder for iron ore pellet making is obtainable from bituminous materials produced in the hightemperature cracking of crude oils. This paper deals with production process and basic properties of this binder as well as new applications in the field of iron ore pelletizing.

The Mount Stavely Volcanic Complex compri- ses one of a number of northerly trending fault bounded greenstone occurrences in Western Vict- oria, of probable Cambrian or older age. The greenstone belt is coincident with several linear positive aeromagnetic anomalies, which outline the surface and subsurface extensions of these greenstones. Mapping at Mount Stavely has identified serpentinite, variolitic basalt, two-pyroxene and pyroxene-hornblende andesite, dacite, rhyodacite and their pyroclastic equiv- alents. Chemically and mineralogically the volcanics constitute a calc-alkaline assemblage. The mineral potential of the region has been enhanced following a discovery by Pennzoil of Australia Limited near Ararat, of sulphide min- eralisation containing approximately 1 million tonnes at 2.7 percent copper. The volcanic environment of the Mount Stavely Volcanic Complex is discussed in terms of similar environments found in Canada.

Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

This presentation is to outline the current practice of mechanised stoping a one-metre wide, gold bearing ore body to optimise fragmentation, minimise dilution and reduce stoping costs.Coolgardie underground operations have historically been mined using traditional shrink stope methods, but in this recent economic environment (with falling gold prices and high costs of traditional methods) it was necessary to look for alternative methods in order to reduce costs and increase productivity.Although still in a learning and refinement phase, CGNL is satisfied that it is feasible, practical and more economic to use mechanised long up-hole stope and long-hole rising methods to significantly reduce the mining cost, reduce dilution, increase safety and increase productivity three-fold compared to traditional airleg methods used throughout the Fasten Goldfields.

A description is given of an investigation into the feasibility of using controlled recirculation of warm exhaust air into the cold intake air of underground mines during winter. Canadian mines can experience inlet air temperatures of minus 30 ¦C and less, requiring them to pre-heat their intake air. The use of controlled recirculation would reduce the inlet air quantity and thus reduce heating costs which exceed $1M on some mines.

'Industrial Minerals - their mining and use in New Zealand' is the theme of the 1978 Annual Conference of the New Zealand Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This paper describes the use of phosphate rock, sulphur and potassium chloride (potash) - three industrial minerals which have enabled the farmers of New Zealand to increase production to current levels. The growth of imports of these raw materials for the New Zealand fertiliser industry is well documented in NZ Fertiliser Statistics 1977. This is the most recent of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries annual publications on this Subject prepared from the detailed returns of fertiliser manufacture and sales from each fertiliser works. There are now 12 of these works in New Zealand one of the most recently established being in Whangarie where this conference is being held. Its capacity to manufacture superphosphate will shortly be 300 000 tonnes twice that when it opened late in 1964. New grinding and manufacturing equipment comes on stream early in 1979. This paper illustrates the interdependence of two primary industries, agriculture and mining. New Zealand's economy in the foreseeable future will be based on agriculture so that our standard of living is dependent on the overseas prices and freight costs of the bulk raw materials from which our fertilisers are made. For the year ended 31 March 1978 New Zealand's total exports were $3395 million, of this total $2413 million (71%) came from the products of pastoral agriculture (wheat, wool, dairy and other animal products), $291 million from forest products and $501 (15%) from manufactured exports. Approximately half of the pastoral receipts can be attributed to the fertilisers applied at a total cost of about $200 million including subsidy.

FaulIing west of the Mount Isa mine is described and is shown to be related to three groups of folds that have been recognized in the area. The first period of faulting postdates the first generation folding; these faulIs are regional faults (tectonic discontinuities) which are folded by second generation folds. The faulting accompanying the second generation folding divides the area west of the Mount Isa mine into four structurally and metamorphically identifiable blocks. The most prominent of these second generation faults is the Mount Isa Fault, which is characterized by a number of distinct zones of intense second generation folding and the presence of localized layers of mylonite. Only limited evidence for brittle deformation has been observed and the major movement appears to be associated with the plastic deformation of the rocks. Confined to the areas of second generation folding in the Mount Isa Fault are numerous third generation kink folds. A detailed description of the Mount Isa and other faulIs is presented together with evidence for their existence. The displacement accompanying this faulting cannot be established because of the complexity of the structure.Postdating these faults and all the folding of the area are minor cross faults.
