This paper examines the importance of processing to the properties and performance of high purity zirconia ceramics. Many of the principles discussed, however, apply to ceramic processing in general. For fabricated ceramic articles to display their wide range of high performance properties, they must be made fully dense. The precursor powder and postpowder processing requirements necessary to achieve full density in the fabricated body are discussed. Brittleness, the anathema of ceramics, can be overcome in zirconia by incorporation of toughening mechanisms. Transformation toughening and microcrack toughening and their origins in partially stabilized zirconia are reviewed.

Traditionally, the Lead Lode at Broken Hill has been represented on presentation plans, cross sections and diagrams in scientific papers as a solid black mass, around which the more 'interesting' and 'structurally useful', wall rocks appear to wrap. Structural analysis of the Broken Hill orebodies has usually turned to these wall rocks to determine the structural history of the mineralisation.This tendency to represent the orebody as a massive single entity is incorrect and the aim of this paper is to illustrate that sulphide orebodies (in this case Lead Lode), are a dynamic part of the mine stratigraphy. They can preserve a great deal of useful structural information that can be recorded with detailed internal mapping.Three main categories of ore type are recognised in Lead Lode; Stratiform ores, Mobilised ores and Metasomatically altered ore. The ore types in these categories occupy or have formed in distinct structural and stratigraphic positions and have clearly recognisable inter-relationships.

This paper outlines software development and design work carried out by Mincom Pty Ltd in collaboration with Capricorn Coal Management (CAPCOAL) for computer based design of rehabilitated strip mine landforms at German Creek Mine. Current developments and future application areas for this software are also discussed in relation to other mines in Central Queensland. The development program was initiated in response to statutory requirements placed on mining companies in 1990 to produce a five year Plan of Operations which was to include a contour plan of the final rehabilitated mine landform at the end of the five year planning period. This plan was to be submitted to the Department of Resource Industries (DRI) by 1 December 1990. Due to the limited time given to prepare the plan, a work program was formulated in collaboration with Mincom Pty Ltd to develop suitable software to carry out the design work and provide the required plans and quantities. The software had to include computer based methods to allow design of the proposed landform in line with the rehabilitation strategy adopted by CAPCOAL at the time.

Removing the ledge formation in the Hall-Heroult cell during the electrolysis process may significantly reduce the energy requirement of the aluminium production process. In the absence of the ledge, however, the sidewall-material types become heavily restricted since the cryolite is very corrosive at the electrolysis temperatures. This paper study the corrosion behaviour of sintered nickel ferrite, nickel aluminate, and magnesium aluminate refractories (as possible candidates for sidewall material) in molten aluminium and cryolite melts with various alumina content at 980°C. Immersion tests of refractories with various porosity were conducted to assess the suitability of the refractories in the corrosive environment of the electrolysis cells. Microstructural change of the refractory after immersion were analysed using secondary scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling of the melts were taken at 0, 10 min, 30 min, and each hour up to 6 hrs, and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. Based on the projected concentration of the refractories constituents in the melts, it was predicted that the corrosion rate of NiFe2O4, NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 in cryolite with 11 wt per cent Al2O3 were 461 × 103, 1.03 × 103, and 798 × 103 cm/a, respectively. Much lower corrosion rate of 2.3 cm/a for NiFe2O4, 2.6 cm/a for NiAl2O4 and 0.3 cm/a for MgAl2O4 were predicted if the refractories in contact with aluminium melts. Erosion played an important role in the corrosion as the concentration of the refractory constituents in the melts were beyond its solubility limit. It is therefore crucial to increase the densities of the refractory and improve its wetting characteristics.

The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is the focus of a world-class effort in providing technical solutions to the minerals industry. The 85 FTE staff are drawn from the CentreÆs five joint venture research partners comprising universities (Curtin, Murdoch and Qld) and government research agencies (CSIRO and WA Dept of Industry and Resources). There are also 12 industry partners, representing most of the leading mining companies in the world. Around 45 postgraduate students, mainly PhDs, make a significant contribution to the research effort. Total annual expenditure on R&D is around $17 million.Hydrometallurgy activities encompass both fundamental and applied research across the alumina, gold and base metal sectors. The Centre is now growing its client base into overseas markets, particularly North America, South Africa and Europe. Quality, strategic R&D by the Parker Centre is seen by the industry as an attractive investment. A recent survey of the industry revealed an estimated ten-fold return based on direct costs of research to the client. In addition, the Parker Centre has a strong commitment to education of postgraduate students wishing to enter the mining industry as well as providing specialist courses for those technical professionals already employed in the industry. The wide range of employment opportunities in the mining industry is reflected in the diversity of the disciplines amongst the CentreÆs research team, eg extractive metallurgy, chemistry, biotechnology, physics, engineering, molecular modelling, microscopy, geology and computational fluid dynamics. How does an atomic force microscope and molecular modelling improve our ability to control gypsum scaling or understand crystallisation of alumina in a Bayer plant? Can a biologist contribute to the problem of the slow leaching of copper from chalcopyrite? Why are computational fluid dynamics and lasers the basis of understanding how to make thickeners work more efficiently. Can you combine a PhD or Honours degree with industry experience? What is crud and why is nickel stressed? These are typical examples of the CentreÆs research activities and demonstrate the contributions of its multi-disciplinary teams which keep the Australian mining industry at the cutting edge of advanced global technology.

Many changes have occurred in the world market for manganese over the last five years. Among these, the emergence of divided steel processes for the hot metal refining of pig iron is affecting the use of both ferruginous manganese ore and ferro manganese, at this stage particularly in the Japanese steel industry. Subsequent demand for higher quality manganese materials is promoting the use of thermally beneficiated products such as sinter. In addition, many processes are being developed for the direct smelting of fine manganese ores, of which plasma technology is the most advanced. Cost pressures and product quality requirements are encouraging pre- viously self sufficient countries such as The People's Republic of China and the USSR to import high grade manganese ores to supplement indigenous lower quality supplies. At the same time, Brazil has been provided with the impetus to convert its substantial reserves of ore to value added products.

The recovery of molybdenum at Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC) has become increasingly important as its demand and price have risen dramatically in the last few years. Consequently, the flotation behaviour of the molybdenum bearing mineral, molybdenite, has received a significant amount of attention. The flotation performance of molybdenite generally lags that of the copper sulfide minerals and is much more variable. There are many factors including particle size, liberation, surface slimes and oxidation that contribute to this and also much speculation as to the relative contribution of each of these factors. This paper discusses the morphology of the molybdenite found at KUC, the mineral associations in the different lithogical ores types and the effect that each of these has on flotation performance. Quantitative mineralogical analysis and an assessment of particle shapes are used to explain that flotation behaviour does not necessarily follow expected trends and that some behaviour is counter-intuitive. This unique behaviour can be explained by the morphology and anisotropic nature of molybdenite.

A small modification to current industrial practice should lead to better nickel powders for use in alloying, electroplating, and powder metallurgy. Nickel powder compacts sold for alloying are not always suitable for electroplating applications, since some presently used commercial powders will expand on sintering. Further, such nickel powders are unsuitable for use in the production of powder metal parts, because of expansion during heating of the near-net-shape preforms. Research in these laboratories has enabled the elimination of expansion, and led to techniques for the production of compacts suitable, in particular, for commercial use in both alloying and electroplating. The techniques include: powder pretreatment, cold pressing and sintering, hot pressing, and hot pressing and sintering. In this way compacts are readily prepared with densities of at least 93 per cent of solid nickel, and these, when used as anodes in Watts general purpose and bright baths, give both cathode current and plating efficiencies of 90-98 per cent.

In order to counter the massive increase in the level of near gravity material that would follow the reduction in dense-medium cyclone separation density at B.H.P. Slab and Plate Product Division's B and C coal preparation plants, "wing tank" systems to control medium density to within ¦0.005RD units have been installed. However, despite very precise density control, cyclone metallurgical performance has been less than satisfactory. The approaches taken to identify the causes of this poor performance and to justify alterations in operational and maintenance practices are presented.

The multi-reversal direct shear test (MRDS) method is commonly used to measure the residual shear strength of soils. However, when the standard direct shear (DS) apparatus is used, the MRDS method is prone to two major sources of error: load cap tilting and specimen loss. These two sources of error can cause erratic behaviour in the residual shear strength curve, making it difficult or even impossible to determine the correct residual shear strength value of the specimen being tested. This paper presents the results of new modifications to the standard DS apparatus that prevent load cap tilting and specimen loss. Consolidated drained testing was performed on highly-over consolidated cohesive soil samples from a Latrobe Valley open pit mine, with results obtained from the modified DS apparatus showing a great improvement in the residual shear strength profile compared to those obtained using the standard apparatus. Large numbers of reversals (up to 14) conducted on a single specimen in the modified DS apparatus showed no notable load cap tilting and no specimen loss occurred. Feasibility is a value improvement process for projects. At any stage in project development, a feasibility study can be undertaken, but although the scope generally remains unchanged the extent of detail and level of accuracy usually increases with time. The main scope elements are a business definition, project description and an execution plan. The studies are designed to assess the potential of the project and to secure funding for on-going examination. Invariably, the investigations loop back to earlier stages to establish more appropriate development criteria but a critical stage is reached when a project construction decision is requested. This feasibility study requires very detailed presentation and analysis to a higher accuracy for the owner(s) and their potential lender(s).

Gold and copper mineralization in the Parkes area is hosted by a meridional sequence of Late Ordovician to Early Silurian igneous and sedimentary rocks on the central northern edge of the exposed Lachlan Fold Belt. The mineralized area straddles two zones separated in part by the Parkes Thrust and exhibiting different styles of deformation and mineralization (Figure 1). The western zone is characterized by gently folded rocks, with shallow dips and weak to non-existent axial plane cleavage. Faulting is restricted to directions oblique to bedding. Numerous occurrences of minor copper mineralization are known, but of recent national importance is the discovery of the Coradgery- Goonumbla porphyry copper-gold deposits by Geopeko Ltd. A resource in excess of 250 million tonnes has been delineated (Jones, 1985), and this represents the first porphyry deposit of sufficient grade and tonnage to be potentially mineable in New South Wales. The eastern zone is much more strongly deformed. Folding is tight with strongly developed axial plane cleavage. Faulting is abundant both parallel and oblique to bedding. Quartz veining is also abundant, and a narrow belt of gold mineralization adjacent to the Parkes Thrust stretches from Forbes in the south, through Parkes and Peak Hill, to Tomingley in the north. Over 31 tonnes of gold have been produced from this gold belt, mostly before 1914, and now three deposits show good potential for redevelopment - Peak Hill, and the London-Victoria and Lachlan lines of lode.

This paper presents a new idea in field data collection for geological and scientific data. The computer keyboard has been replaced by a barcode wand driving a spreadsheet style editor. To use the full capabilities of computer hardware currently available, geotechnical and geological data can be entered and validated in the field, in a structured format, for later transfer into modem geological modelling databases. An example, using a geotechnical borehole log, explains the principles discussed. The generic nature of the Datcol system is illustrated by the application developed using the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute Rock Mass Classification system. A brief description of a modem spatial relational database is also given with particular reference to underground engineering.

The Bulli Coal Seam, located in the Illawarra Coalfield of New South Wales, has a long and varied history of sudden outbursts. From available information this problem has resulted in twelve fatalities over the last one hundred and one years, with over five hundred separate outburst incidents being identified. These incidents have varied in severity and intensity from the discharge of 1 to 2 tonne of coal, with a slight increase in gas emission, to the discharge of 200 to 400 tonne of coal with some 6,000 m3 of gas being liberated and large items of mining equipment being pushed 1 to 2 metres down the roadway.Geological features associated with these outbursts can be mapped on a regional and mine by mine basis, to provide some indication or warning. Similarly changes in gas content and gas composition can also be determined on a regional and mine by mine basis. However sudden geological changes (such as a 6.5 metre seam displacement within 15 metres) variations in gas content (such as 6 m3/tonne to 15 m3/tonne) and changes in gas composition (from 95% CH4 to 90% CO2) all within one mine does make the prediction or forecasting of outburst incidents exceedingly difficult.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a promising process for obtai- ning energy from coal, which is either unmineable with current mining techno- logy or uneconomic to recover, using conventional methods, in the present energy market situation. There are several coal fields, which could become new coal reserves, if the UCG process were successfully applied. In the 1960's Japanese researchers made a number of basic studies and field tests into UCG, although not all of them produced favourable results. This paper reviews Japanese research on UCG. This includs basic studies into coal gasification using a small, tube reactor fed by air and oxygen, and also large scale model stu- dies(reactor size of 8.Om x 2.4m x 1.5 m). Field test results from Akabira colliery in Hokkaido and a feasibility study of power generation using UCG from a coal field in Hokkaido are also Presented.

During the commissioning phase of Prominent Hill, periods of reduced recovery were experienced with higher-grade ore blends. This was unexpected and as part of the process to identify the cause, surveys were conducted in May 2009, with two different ore blends (copper grades: 1.94 per cent Cu (blend 1) and 2.49 per cent Cu (blend 2)). Metallurgical performance was assessed in terms of rougher recovery and grade with consideration of both pulp and froth effects. In addition, hydrodynamic measurements (gas hold up, bubble size, superficial gas velocity) as well as measurements of bubble load and top-of-froth grade were taken during the surveys and full mineralogical assessment of selected streams completed to characterise the nature of the differences. The metallurgical results showed that the lower performance was obtained with blend 2 which contained the higher amount of chalcocite and was higher-grade. Analysis of the survey data showed that for both ore blends more than half of the copper loss occurred in the +38 ¦m size fractions. Almost 30 per cent of the copper in the +38 ¦m fractions that reported to the rougher tails during processing of blend 2 was liberated compared to less than five per cent for blend 1. Additionally almost 60 per cent of the copper in the +38 ¦m fraction of blend 2 was chalcocite compared with approximately 20 per cent in blend 1. This paper discusses the sensitivity of the chalcocite-to-surface chemistry effects causing marked reductions in recovery either through reduced pulp recovery or froth phase (detachment) effects. The reagent suite and operating conditions were subsequently changed and the recoveries increased substantially and the sensitivity to ore changes eliminated. Mesothermal gold deposits of southern Alaska and Westland, New Zealand have both formed at the seaward edge of major collisional zones in the Pacific basin. In Alaska, production of large fluid volumes correlates in time with the addition of heat into the lower parts of the accreted terranes in the late stages of collisional orogeny. This heat was critical for driving both the metamorphic reactions that released the large volumes of fluid that carried the gold, and the contemporaneous widespread anatexis and magmatism. In Alaska's Chugach terrane, this heat was produced by subduction of a spreading ridge beneath the North America continental margin in the Eocene. The resulting products were the S-type granites and gold-bearing veins. The similar widespread S-type plutonism and gold veining in Westland's Buller terrane suggest that a similar tectonic event could have triggered ore formation along the southeastern edge of Gondwanaland. Based on the Alaskan model, a Devonian or Early Carboniferous age is favoured for high volume metamorphogenic fluid generation and gold vein formation in Westland.

Late in 2005 it became apparent that cave propagation at the Northparkes Mine was not progressing as planned. By mid-2006 sufficient Reserves were identified to warrant an extensive drill and blast program to assist in cave propagation. This program began late in 2006 and concluded early 2007. A significant challenge faced was the drilling and blasting of holes between 75 - 240 m in length in the South Wedge in Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody. The project set new benchmarks in production drilling and charging in underground metalliferous mining. This paper discusses the drill and blast designs, the challenges and the operational issues encountered with this project. Also highlighted are ways in which these were overcome.

The magnitude of stress variations associated with a blast wave near production pillars is analysed by modelling blast vibrations measured in the surrounding rockmass. The results indicate a wide variation in stress which is thought to contribute to the observed damage in pillars adjacent to the draw points.

The technical limits for high-pressure transport of large particle solids by means of sludge pumps, piston pumps or the like lead to the development of the pipe-feeder system. The pipe-feeder is a type of pressure lock in which the high-pressure pump itself is not in contact with the solids. Simultaneous operation of the three chambers with corresponding control of the valves allows continuous flow in both the primary and secondary circuits. Initially the pipe-feeder was used only for the transport of solids. Today it also operates with great success in central mine cooling systems, serving as an alternative for high-pressure/low-pressure heat exchangers or Pelton systems. In addition to the technology applied up to now, the pipe-feeder is also capable of transporting ice slurry, thus increasing cooling output consider- Ably.
