This paper details successful implementation of a revolutionary pit access system involving excavation of an 'in-the-wall' ramp at Three Mile Hill open pit operated by Gold Mines of Coolgardie, formerly Goldfan Limited, at Coolgardie, Western Australia. Three Mile Hill is a medium-size, open pit, gold operation typified by hard, competent, fresh rock conditions from near surface. The project involved construction of a haulage tunnel or decline access located in the wall of an open pit in place of a conventional pit access ramp. Works undertaken as discussed herein included excavation, support, ventilation, dewatering, services installation, commissioning and monitoring. Prior to implementation, the conventional hardrock pit slopes and designs were constrained by the presence of infrastructure and a main road to the North and by adjoining leases to the Southeast. The combination of these factors and economic considerations resulted in a decision to proceed with an innovative in-the-wall ramp access system that is believed to be the first of its type in Australia. Back-analysis indicates that implementation resulted in a cost saving of as much as A$3.6 million and increased mineable pit reserves. The paper deals with the successful implementation and operation of the in-the-wall ramp haulage as well as an economic evaluation that is aimed at drawing some general conclusions on favourable conditions for implementation in other mining scenarios.

An improved technique for the quick and accurate measurement of the weight and centre of mass in the horizontal plane of large machines has been developed. On-site weighing of large plant such as bucket wheel dredgers is an important part of the commissioning procedure. The results from the weighing assist in determining the stability of the machine and also enable confirmation of the structural weight distribution used for stress analysis at the design stage. In this paper the techniques previously used for weighing are reviewed and the sources of error using these methods examined. A full descrip- tion of the current technique and procedure is given explaining how the measurement system comprising strain gauge load cells, displacement transducers, wind speed and direction sensors, data logger, computer and software was developed to enable quick and accurate measurements to be made. Proposed modifications to software necessitated by the replace- ment of current measuring instrumentation and computer are discussed. A typical example of measurements from the weighing of a large dredger, illustrating the accuracy of the new technique is given and the calibration technique used to check the accuracy of the force and moment measurements is explained. An outline of how the results are used to certify the machine for operation is given.

As the search for major orebodies continues, the regolith dominated areas of the Broken Hill region remain one of the major exploration frontiers. The past exploration philosophies emphasising bedrock related characteristics have been limited in their ability to effectively explore in the regolith dominated areas, that are a feature of most of the Broken Hill region (Figure 1). If mineral exploration is to be more effective across all of the Broken Hill region, particularly in the regolith dominated areas, an appreciation and increased understanding of the regolith and landscape features are a necessity. Ironically, there have been very few studies of the regional regolith and landscape features of this region. Owing to the previous lack of an established regolith-landform framework, this study initially concentrated on the general characterisation and variation in regolith types corresponding to the area of the Broken Hill Block, within NSW (Willis, 1989; Stevens, 1986). The approach has been to produce a regional regolith-landform map at 1:100 000 scale and conduct a complimentary program of regolith sampling and site descriptions. This was a basis to identify areas for more detailed regolith-landform mapping (1:25 000 scale) and for producing a regional stratigraphic framework and models for landscape and regolith evolution. This information can then be used to provide a basis for regional mineral exploration models and strategies. This paper highlights some of the regionally significant regolith-landform features and their general significance to mineral exploration. More detailed information on specific regolith-landform features and study sites may be found in Hill et al (1994; 1996; in press) and Hill (in prep).

The US Bureau of Mines is conducting research to improve the health and safety for underground coal miners, and the efficiency of the mining systems that are used. In 1986, the Bureau began a major research effort on the technology for computer-assisted mining systems for underground coal mines. The initial target was technology for continuous mining machines that would allow them to extract coal by computer-assisted operation. Technology areas being investigated include guidance systems, machine condition systems, computer systems, machine control, human-machine interfaces and planning. In each of these areas, individual system development has progressed to where underground testing of these systems will begin in 1991.In addition to coal extraction, the Bureau has also begun research for the development of technology for computer-assisted roof bolting. The Bureau is developing technology for a "smart" roof bolter that would be able to sense and analyze strata conditions to determine the requirements to provide a competent roof. The system would determine the location of the hole, drill the hole to length, and select and install the appropriate bolt.

Most Australian mining projects are becoming smaller, more remote and with lower grades of ore. Their small size has been making it harder for mining companies to absorb the large infrastructure costs. This has forced companies to reduce those costs in every way they can. Social factors, environmental groups and even tax laws have added other pressures to force down the infrastructure costs for remote projects. For the last ten years, the downward trend in costs has been marked. It seems certain to continue for years into the Future.

The recommended maximum explosive weight for boulder blasting using internal charges is 0.15 kg/m 3 (Olofsson, 1988). Normally this charge results in excessive scattering and flyrock, creating increased liability for the operator, especially in congested areas. An alternative technique using smaller explosive charges is being developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). It is designed to reduce boulder scatter, flyrock and fumes and allows shooting in close proximity, using common blasting products. The method comprises drilling a hole into the top of the boulder, inserting a small primer, filling the hole with water and shooting it. The hole is drilled approximately two thirds into the boulder and the charge (10 g/m 3 ) is placed half way into the hole filled with water. Upon initiation the primer produces a small volume of gas at extremely high pressure which acts upon the surrounding (relatively incompressible) water. The water transmits this pressure to the surrounding blasthole, hydraulically fracturing the rock. As the fractures propagate and the boulder expands a rapid increase in the blasthole volume occurs. Because of the small charge the gas pressure quickly dissipates reducing rock movement, resulting in a fractured boulder with minimal material leaving the immediate vicinity. The current work includes both laboratory and field testing programs. The laboratory program is focussed on determining optimum parameters at reduced scale using concrete cubes. The field program focuses on determining a minimum powder factor and includes shooting smaller boulders up to 1 m 3 underground and 1.5 to 5 m 3 boulders in a surface quarry. In both cases the boulders were obtained as oversize from regular production blasts.

In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

Application of thermal oxidation is considered a promising technique in reducing fugitive methane gas from ventilation air methane (VAM). A typical thermal oxidiser operates with diluted methane and converts it to less potent greenhouse gases. However, having a thermal oxidiser in the vicinity of the coalmine exhaust shaft is a major safety concern as its high operation temperature increases the likelihood of accidental fire and explosion. The aim of this study is to investigate the application and effectiveness of side venting technique in reduction of deflagration consequences caused by methane gas. To address this importance a series of experiments were conducted on a detonation tube designed and fabricated as part of larger scale VAM Abatement safety project. The experimental work was carried out into two stages: examine the flame and explosion properties in a large-scale detonation tube to get reliable data; and then design and employ a venting system into the detonation tube to verify the effectiveness and performance of the venting against the flame and explosion.Results corresponding to this study show that the side vent duct with venting coefficient magnitude of 37 had a significant influence on methane flame deflagration and the explosion characteristics. The maximum pressure rise at the detonation tube reduced approximately 20&#160;per&#160;cent to 32&#160;per&#160;cent by applying the side venting duct. Also, the data shows that the venting damped the pressure oscillation after the flame deflagration which eventually reduced the system instability. Mine operators are currently in a situation where market forces are acting to reduce profit margins and at the same time, regulatory bodies are insisting on improved mine safety and stability. This means that ground support must be made more cost efficient while maximising operator and equipment safety.A key aspect of ground support efficiency is the &apos;in the ground&apos; performance. This paper discusses the factors that influence the way rock bolts and cable bolts perform. It highlights the need to know how support efficiency varies in different ground conditions.

Arrow Energy NL has been operating a number of coal seam gas wells in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. At the time of writing this paper, the region is enduring an extended drought period. The local aquifers are depleting and have not been significantly recharged in over a decade. The local communities (both rural and townships) are struggling to obtain water. Currently, coal seam gas (CSG) operators (under licence) draw water from the coal seams as part of the gas production process and the majority of operators choose to evaporate this water, as it is characteristically brackish to saline in quality and as such must be contained. Although the water produced from one CSG operator is not sufficient to drought-proof the greater area of the Darling Downs, there is potential to supply smaller local areas and contribute to the sustainability of these communities. This paper outlines the work completed by Arrow and its local community partners on the Darling Downs to date, and discusses the application of the produced formation water for:stock watering in feedlots, as a feedstock for coal washing, as a potable water supply for Dalby, as an agricultural water supply for cotton farming, and use as a medium for growing salt-water fin fish.

Vaal Reefs Mine annually produces some 75 tonnes of gold. Stoping operations, using a scattered mining method, are conducted on several reef horizons within Witwatersrand Supergroup metasediments of the Klerksdorp Goldfield. Current grades average 7.19 g/t Au over a 133cm stoping width. The reef horizons, of which the Vaal Reef is the most important, consists of 2.9Ga palaeoplacer deposits at the base of low angle unconformities. Typically, a reef comprises a mature quartz and chert conglomerate with a siliceous matrix and intergranular pyrite and carbon. Geologists are primarily responsible for underground mapping and supervising of drilling programs. To a lesser extent they are involved with sampling, grade control, ore reserve estimation, mine planning and rock mechanics. Due to a general decline in grades of gold mines, an escalation of production costs, and with the current weak gold price, it has become essential to improve production efficiencies. Consequently the role of the mine geologist has moved away from that of simply keeping the mining people "on reef&apos;. Greater emphasis is being placed on refining geological models to assist in selective mining of the reef and investigations of secondary reef horizons are encouraged. Exploration within fault losses and re-evaluation of pillars is important, and geologists are becoming more involved with sampling and grade control exercises.

During the past 18 months several import- ant hydrocarbon discoveries have been made in the Dampier Sub-basin, which is a sedimentary area lying entirely offshore from the Precambrian Pilbara Block in the southern part of &apos;he Northwest Shelf of Western Australia. This sub-basin is a major sedimentary downwarp forming a northern extension to the Carnarvon Basin. This extension is bounded to the north by the De Grey Nose, separating it from the Beagle Sub-basin. To the south the Dampier Sub-basin merges with the Barrow Sub- basin. Extensive seismic data combined with results from exploration drilling show that the Dampier Sub-basin is a complex depositional basin containing over 20,000 feet of sediments which are mainly Triassic to Recent in age. Tectonically the sub-basin can be divided into seven main structural elements. In a northwest to southeast direction these are the Rankin Platform, the Kendrew Trough, the Madeleine- Dampier Trend, the Lewis Trough, the Legendre- Rosemary Trend, the Enderby Fault Zone and the broad Pilbara Shelf. Permian sediments were encountered in only one well drilled to date in the sub-basin, but Triassic and younger sediments are extensive. The Utah Development Company Research and Development Laboratory has embarked upon a programme of optimisation of the company&apos;s coal preparation plants. This goal is being accomplished in a three-fold manner - use of pilot plant equipment for optimisation and modelling of the various unit operations, evaluation or development of on-stream ash analysis for process control, and evaluation or development of alternative processes. In each of these areas, digital data acquisition- and at a later stage, process control feedback, is being extensively utilised, based largely upon the use of the HP85 and HP9915 desktop computers. A variety of input/output configurations such as HPIB, BCD, GPIO are used, and at times supplemented by microprocessors such as the Intel 80/05 to assist in data transfer. This paper will discuss a number of specific projects, especially in relation to the manner in which the variables are monitored, and the data later retrieved and analysed.

Minera Alumbrera Limited operates the Alumbrera concentrator, treating a nominal 80 000 tpd of porphyry gold/copper ore. It is located in Argentina, 1200 km north-west of Buenos Aires in Catamarca Province, at an elevation of 2550 m above sea level. Treatment facilities consist of crushing, SAG and primary ball mill grinding circuits, rougher flotation, ball mill regrinding, gravity recovery and cleaner flotation. It is one of only a small number of concentrators in the world, which uses Jameson Cells alone for cleaner circuit flotation. Plant design was started in June 1995, with commissioning commencing in July 1997. Following a successful ramping up to design tonnages and recoveries, a number of options were reviewed to improve gold and copper recoveries. This paper concentrates on a detailed size by size flotation recovery project, commenced in May 1999. Utilising optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and analysis of surface chemistry it has allowed losses by size fraction to be quantified and options for enhanced recoveries to be developed. Coupled with extensive circuit surveys it has also provided an insight into previously unknown properties of Jameson Cell operation. Among these are unique residence time and bubble formation reactions to reagent and pulp flow variations, which has permitted a number of novel changes to the operation to maximise capacity and recovery.

Synthetic seismograms of reflectivity method and some field records available are studied to detect the amplitude anomalies at the interface of the gaothermal reservoir the gas and/or oil boundary, and the underground tunnel. The first arrival of PO wave on the P-SV record are weak and emergent while those of P wave only rotated with respect to an incident angle are clear. This can, be explained by means of the energy loss of P-SV wave conversion. The primary reflections of P waves about depth fade away as compared to SH waves which do not perform any conversion, although they hold high attenuation in the fully saturated fluid layers. Reflection of comparable strength is present at the P-wave and S-wave... boundaries, but gas-saturated zones correlating with P wave bright spots do not show equivalent attenuation anomalies. Thus the comparative technique of P-SV wave and SI i wave records is very useful to indicate the strong amplitude anomalies at the boundaries of sealing targets.

The quality of mine planning decisions ultimately depends on reliable estimates of the characteristics of the orebody. The quant- ifiable factors such as grades or thickness can be estimated from field data gathered from outcrops or exploratory drillholes. Since outcrop data is necessarily limited to the periphery of a deposit, extensive drilling generally is required. This paper outlines a method for selecting the number and location of additional exploratory boreholes using an iterative procedure based on a mathematical optimization concept called fixed point theory. The method is illustrated through its application to an exploratory drilling program for a coal mine where optimized locations gave a lower estimate of regional and block variances than a manual Choice.

The manufacture of steel from raw materials which have to be mined, transported and processed must affect the environment. Steelmaking, like almost every other stage of manufacture involves the unwanted production of dust and fume; thus a major part of the steel industry&apos;s effort to minimize changes to the environment is the collection, treatment and recycling of dust and fume to avoid pollution of the atmosphere and waterways. The paper describes how this achieved in the various steelmaking processes and shows the diversity of problems-and their solutions in this context. Particular emphasis is, given to basic oxygen steelmaking.

A tunnel operations analyser is a new high technol- ogy instrument for use in underground work. By remotely sensing the acoustic emissions from operating machines and processes in a tunnel or shaft and by applying sophis- ticated computer processing to them individual process cycles and other detailed information about the operating processes can be collected. Detailed analyses and dissec- tions of the work in progress can be made and a variety of action oriented management reports produced. The pro- cess is fully automatic. Results of applying this device to two full scale tunnel projects are presented. The hardware and software that comprise the instrument are discussed in detail. Processes by which this device can be used to sub- stantially reduce tunnel costs are presented. It is concluded that this type of technology has great potential.

The Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) mining method was used to mine two rib pillars at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NEHC) mine at Broken Hill. Experience gained in a trial VCR pillar stope was applied to the design of Panel 3CN pillar (P3CN). Restricted access and a central sandfilled plug in this pillar necessitated the use of angled blastholes and blasting of the stope in two sections. Borehole surveys and close charging supervision were necessary to block, charge and stem the spherical charges in the correct position. The laver sections of the VCR stope with rock walls attained an average slice advance of 2.2 m whereas the higher section of the st.ope between cemented fill walls attained an average slice advance of 3.4 m. Achieved fragmentation was extremely fine. External dilution was assessed at less than 10 per cent. A cement consolidated sandfill exposure of approximately 1300 m2 stood vertically with no significant slumping.
