The operation of a one tonne submerged combustion pilot plant for the recovery of copper from anode furnace and converter slags is described and the effects of variables discussed. Using coal as reductant, copper levels of anode furnace slag were lowered to 1% or less, with batch times of approximately 120 minutes. Fluxing with limestone was required to produce a fluid slag at temperatures of 1200 - 1300¦C. For converter slags, reduction to 0.5% Cu or less was achieved in batch times of 35 minutes. The chemistry of the pyrometallurg- ical recovery of copper is briefly reviewed in relation.to copper recovery methods.

At Tamano Smelter, part of the furnace settler is electrically heated by electrodes placed internally. This practice provides good control of the settler conditions. The authors have been investigating improvements in furnace operations, especially to decrease the copper content in the slag discarded from the settler. The important operational points on the control of magnetite in liquid matte and slag are discussed on the basis of the thermodynamic calculation method developed by Prof. S. Goto. The behaviour of magnetite in the practical furnace has been studied by using a torsion magnetometer and a solid electrolyte oxygen-sensing cell.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a "telescoped" overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 401an length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation. A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.

Alumina reduction in Rajhara iron ore slimes essentially involves separation of hematite from gibbsite in relatively coarser fraction and from kaolinite in the finer fraction. Selective dispersion flocculation studies on synthetic mixtures clearly indicated that while it was possible to achieve almost perfect separation of hematite from kaolinite using starch and PAMX (modified polyacrylamide containing hydroxamate functional groups) flocculants, no selectivity was observed in iron oxide-alumina system. A schematic flowsheet suggested on the basis of this work for the beneficiation of Indian ore slimes thus consists of classification in a hydrocyclone, followed by selective dispersion of coarse fraction (underflow) and selective flocculation of the overflow fraction. Starting with a feed assaying 46 per cent Fe and 11.6 per cent A1203, a concentrate assaying 60 per cent Fe and 4.7 per cent A1203 could be produced at an overall iron recovery of 60 per cent using conventional Reagents.

This paper gives an overview of the ASHRAE LibHuAirProp, CoolProp and REFPROP software packages. These packages were predominantly developed for heating, refrigerating and air conditioning engineers and the refrigeration and steam power industries, although CoolProp and REFPROP also cover combustible gases. The main aim of this paper is to highlight the existence capabilities and status of the different packages and where they can be used. The paper gives typical examples of the use of these software packages, specifically as Excel add-ins, and provides a comparison of results of typical mine psychometric and gas drainage calculations using the packages and more traditional ventilation and gas drainage calculation methods. The paper also introduces a hybrid method that improves accuracy compared to traditional methods. In typical mine situations, the use of software packages is probably not required; however, with the increasing accuracy of instruments, potential greenhouse emission costs and the sale of mine gas, more accurate measurements and calculations can potentially save (or make) significant sums of money.CITATION:Harvey, T J M, 2015. Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates a large base metal property near Bathurst, New Brunswick in eastern Canada. Nominal capacity for the underground mining operation and concentrator is 10 250 DMT/day. Four concentrates are produced by differential flotation technology to recover minerals containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. Two characteristics of the Brunswick ores have a major impact on mineral processing operations. The mineralogy of the ore is complex with a total sulphide mineral content of 85 per cent. In addition, the ore is extremely fine-grained, and satisfactory liberation is difficult to achieve. These characteristics directly influence flotation selectivity and thereby affect metallurgical performance. Significant improvements in metallurgical performance have been achieved through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment. Current operating practice and the metallurgical advancements are detailed.

Oxidation of artificial Imperial Smelting Furnace lead bullion was performed during cooling between 1180 and 820°C in order to attempt to produce a tin-rich dross.The addition of sodium carbonate together with stirring increased the tin content of the dross when oxidation was carried out with air or PbO on zinc-free bullion.Zinc in the bullion during oxidation resulted in a decrease in tin concentration of the dross due to zinc oxidation and copper entering the dross.

Rampura Agucha Pb-Zn Mine (RAM) is located about 200 km to the south-west of Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan, India. Open pit mining operations commenced in 1988 and continued to 2018. RAM open pit footprint is the largest in India with length of 2000 m, width 1500 m and depth of 400 m. Development of an underground mine under the operating pit commenced in 2013, through trial mining longhole open stoping with cemented backfill was established as a preferred mining method. Nine years in operations underground mine has reached the production capacity of 4.5 MT, which represent more than 70 per cent of the ore volume mined by the pit. RAM is currently the world second largest underground Pb-Zn mine.

Citigold Corporation operates the Warrior gold mine at Charters Towers, northern Queensland, mining narrow quartz veins (0.1 to 2 m wide) in granodiorite by long hole open stoping on levels 15 m apart. Access is by decline and cross-cuts with on-ore development drives. The mineralisation comprises Palaeozoic mesothermal quartz veins containing gold, pyrite, sphalerite and galena, hosted by the Ordovician age Towers Hill Granite. The gold grain size is variable from 1 to 500 ¦m with 1 m face samples up to 800 ppm Au, and average run-of-mine grades of 10 to 14 ppm. Despite the spectacular gold tenor, little visible gold is present. Gold grades are highly variable presenting challenges in ore reserve estimation. Tonnages are discounted by 70 per cent to allow for the low payabilities (30 to 50 per cent) of the veins. Estimation techniques allow high confidence in overall global grade estimates but poor reliability on a local scale (25 m). Kriging ranges as low as 5 - 8 m means that obtaining a Proved Ore Reserve by diamond drilling is not economically feasible, and broad-scale mine planning decisions are made at the Inferred Mineral Resource stage and mine design work at the Probable Ore Reserve stage. Proved Ore Reserves can only be estimated after underground development has proceeded through the mineralised body with levels at 15 m vertical spacing sampled at 2 - 3 m intervals along the level. However, reconciliations between actual gold produced and earlier resource estimates produce workable results. A further three mines are scheduled to be developed underneath the city of Charters Towers.

Structural geological information is widely used at the Mt Whaleback Mine, Newman, WA. Recent improvements in the structural understanding of Mt Whaleback are providing a very cost-effective way of reducing geological risk, improving the economics of mining, optimising pit design and addressing safety problems. The structure of the Mt Whaleback orebody is highly complex and has a significant influence not only on iron ore genesis but also on pit wall stability. A team approach between the Structural Geology and Geomechanics Groups has been providing excellent results to reduce geological risk at Mt Whaleback.

The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd located near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation. The economics of this exercise have been considerably enhanced in the past year by changing the project's principal product from nickel oxide sinter to refined high purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site. Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to completely change the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.

Thirty two polyacrylamide flocculant samples were selected from the wide range offered to the Australian coal industry. An extensive test program was conducted to consider the properties of the flocculants, the substrates, the process conditions and the water chemistry encountered in coal preparation plants. The study indicated that flocculants with molecular weights of 12 to 14 million and degree of hydrolysis around 40% gave the best "average" performance over a wide range of process conditions. The pick-up and filtration of fine coal was demonstrated on a pilot scale to be a critical function of flocculant properties. This study also showed that the agitation intensity during flocculation was a critical parameter in determining the settling rate of the slurry and the clarity of the resulting supernatant. An electronic meter to measure agitation intensity was designed, constructed and tested to demonstrate how, for the first time, laboratory results can be implemented in operating plants.

The South Comet mine is an underground silver-lead-zinc mine located on the West Coast of Tasmania with an annual production in the order of 35 000 tonne per year. All ore mined is shipped to the Rosebery mill by road, a distance of 17 km.

As mining operations become larger and more complex, larger volumes of geological, geophysical, and production data must be manipulated and interpreted on a day-to-day basis. Because of the large volume of data, more sophisticated data storage strategies, interpretation tools, and visualisation tools must be used by exploration and mining operations in order to remain competitive. Critical to better practice is an understanding of the basic syntax and character of geological and mining data, expressed in the form of a data model. In the short-term, a data model can be used to implement or evaluate schemes for data storage or exchange. It can be used to evaluate software. In the longer term, a data model is essential to the design of the next generation of software for 3D geological modelling. In this and the related paper (Lin et al, 1995) the data model in use by CSIRO is presented, together with: 1. examples of the use of data transfer in the linkage of existing mining software; and 2. examples of the use of the data model in software design.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is a society of engineers and scientists formed in 1893 (incorporated by Royal Charter in 1955) to advance science and engineering in the mineral industries, and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas to enhance the professional excellence of its members. The Institute has several grades of members. The professional members are linked with Student and Company Members, as well as an Affiliate grade covering other professionals and non-professionals with experience in the mineral industry. The diverse group covers all sections of the mineral industry, from exploration through production to marketing of minerals and petroleum. Corporate (professional) membership also covers science and engineering professionals from specialisms other than the "traditional" ones in geosciences, mining and petroleum engineering and metallurgy. The Institute has Branches throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Oceania, whose activities complement the corporate occasions arranged for the benefit of all members by Headquarters in Melbourne. Members are drawn from all sections of the industry - private enterprise, government, research, education, and the support sector, including consultancies, manufacturers and suppliers. Membership of The Institute allows professionals to contribute to their profession through participation in The Institute's seminars and conferences, its many committees and Branch meetings, and through contribution to its many high standard publications. Selective open pit mining for gold has been in progress at Harbour Lights since the onset of mining in March 1985. Selective mining techniques used are similar to those in other recently opened gold mines in Western Australia. However certain practices have been introduced to accommodate the irregular distribution of mineralisation and comparatively high mill tonnage throughput. These include selective mining with large bucket excavators, sequential waste stripping - ore mining normal to the strike of the orebody and sample line preparation and ripping on bench floors. Application of these selective mining practices at Harbour Lights enables the operation to maintain delivery of approximately forty by 50-tonne truck loads of ore to the mill crusher everyday, with limited rehandling of material through ore stockpiles.

Ore sorting is a high capacity, low cost method of preconcentrating ores and in some cases of producing a marketable concentrate. In most cases it is applied to run of mine material, immediately after primary crushing and screening in sizes ranging from 10 mm to 150 mm. Recent developments in bulk sorting of friable uranium deposits have resulted in machines capable of handling fine materials with sensing and separation being achieved on a zone by zone basis. Modern ore sorting machines rely on the synchronous operation of four internal sub systems, feed presentation, sensing, data processing and separation. A variety of different sub systems is available which can be combined in various forms to produce sorters capable of handling a wide variety of mineral types. The benefits in using ore sorting cover a wide range of situations and are applicable to both established mines as well as new mining ventures. Reduced operating costs, increased productivity, capital savings, energy and resource conservation and environmental issues are all part of the reason why ore sorting is finding rapid acceptance in today's mining industry.

A multi-wire borehole instrumentation system was used to monitor strata movement caused by a retreating longwall face at the Ellalong Colliery, situated in the Lower Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Mechanical anchors were placed at various horizons in the borehole which extended from the surface to the extracted coal seam. The vertical movement of the anchors was monitored during mining. The zone of major disturbance was confined to 13 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam. The average dilation of strata in this zone was 6 per cent. Above the caving zone, the tensile strain was under 2mn/m except at one location, where it was `xmi/m. The subsidence trough under dynamic conditions was flatter than that under stationary conditions. The subsidence also depended upon the extent of strata fragmentation prior to undermining.

The Northern Mariana archipelago in the W.Pacific forms a classic intra-oceanic island arc system far from the influences of continental crust. As such it offers an ideal location in which to study many of the problems of subduction-related volcanism. Radiogenic (Sr, Pb, Nd and Hf) and stable (0, S and H) isotope systems have been applied to the question of the possible involvement of components from the subducting slab in arc magmagenesis. The results contrast with earlier studies based upon limited sample suites and suggest that fluids, derived from the slab and enriched in mobile elements, substantially modify the composition of the mantle wedge and contribute to the characteristic geochemistry of arc magmas. Trace element data, including the occurrence of negative Ce-anomalies in the lavas seem consistent with this conclusion. Major and trace element variations within the arc lavas can be modelled in terms of crystal fractionation of a gabbroic mineral assemblage and mixing calculations indicate that this has the approximate composition of PLAG:CPX:MAG:OLIV = 60:25:10:5. This observation is compatible with the widespread occurrence of gabbroic nodules in lavas throughout the arc. Consideration of Rare Earth Element and phenocryst data leads to the conclusion that many of the more basic lavas may be the products of cumulus enrichment. The results of this study constitute a model for magmatic processes occurring in simple island arc systems, and may be generally applicable to other, more complex settings. The recognition of a return flux of material with 'continental' affinity to the mantle, via sediments on the subducting slab, also places strong constraints on geochemical models of crust-mantle evolution.
