The design of underground mine roadways (tunnels) requires a detailed understanding of the in situ stressfield, the rock failure modes, the performance characteristics of reinforcement or support members and assessment of the stress state about the roadway. Definition of these factors, together with monitoring of roadway behaviour during both development and extraction operations, allows rational design procedures to be undertaken.The design approach utilised computational techniques to simulate the behaviour of the strata about the opening for a range of anticipated stressfields and various reinforcement options. Field validation studies are conducted to confirm the design expectations.

To clarify the characteristics of non-uniform flow of gas through layered burdens of ore and coke, flow equations of continuity and motion were solved numerically taking account of the geometrical effect of a bed. The results are compared with that predicted by an approximate solution. A mathematical-kinetic model for determining the distributions of process variables over the region from the top to the melting level of blast furnace with the horizontal or the inclined layers of burdens is developed in consideration of the uneven gas flow. By the use of this model, the longitudinal and the radial distributions of process variables in an existing blast furnace in Japan were calculated with the aid of a digital computer. Computed results show that the process variables and the melting level change remarkably over the cross-section of the furnace and that the patterns of these distributions are similar to the results observed by other investigators.

Hydrothermal mineral deposits are the dominant mineral deposit type in the Cullen Mineral Field, and have been important sources of tin, tungsten gold, silver-lead, zinc and copper. The deposits are mostly in north to northwest-trend- ing shear zones, and are confined to Early Proterozoic contact metamorphosed metasediments or synorogenic to postorogenic granitoids. The distribution of the vein-type deposits with- in the contact aureole defines a district-scale metal zonation of uranium closest to granitoid, through tungsten, copper, tin, silver-lead to gold with increasing distance from granitoid contacts. This zonation probably reflects de- creasing temperatures within the contact aureole during granitoid emplacement, and at the time of generation of a variety of metal-bearing fluids. A magmatic source for some of the metals is indicated by the positive spatial relationship between uranium, tungsten, copper and silver-lead deposits and granitoids abundant in those metals. There is little evidence for any such relation- ship for tin and gold deposits, except for an association of some tin deposits with tin-enriched mafic rocks. Most of the granitoids with anomalous metal values are late stage highly fractionated leuco- granitic phases forming younger plutons peripheral to the main body of the Cullen Batholith, They probably form cusps connected to the main body at shallow depths.

EcoTechnology refers to a series of potential metallurgical processes for complex ores, concentrates, tailings and slags that are all based on an initial chlorination step at low to moderate temperatures probably in a fluid bed chlorinator (FBC). Examples of the research and development (R&D) results are provided in this paper for a high grade Au/Sb Leach Tailings (EcoGold<sub>®</sub> Process), a very refractory sulphide Au concentrate, a refractory gold calcine tailings, a Cu/Au tailings (EcoCopper<sub>®</sub> Process), bulk polymetallic sulphide concentrates and polymetallic sulphide/oxide complex ores (EcoZinc<sub>®</sub> Process and EcoLead<sub>®</sub> Process). R&D on over thirty different ore types has been conducted at a bench scale as discussed. Latterly a dedicated pilot plant was designed and constructed by EcoTech Mining Pty Ltd (EML) and several of the different feed stock results have been confirmed by pilot plant testing. It is planned to scale up to a commercial demonstration plant. To demonstrate the versatility of EcoTechnology, bench and pilot plant test results on five of the projects are used as case studies as follows: Fosterville ‘leach tailing’, VIC; Wiluna flotation concentrate – BIOX Feed, WA; Wiluna calcine facility tailings, WA; Mt Morgan Cu/Au tailings, QLD; Polymetallic sulphide concentrates from Pegmont Deposit, QLD and Polymetallic sulphide/oxide ores from Commonwealth Mine Project, NSW. A series of laboratory flotation tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various depressants as arsenic (and zinc) depressants in the lead cleaner stage of the NBHC mill at Broken Hill. The depressants used included potassium cyanide, ferrous sulphate, sodium hypochlorite, potassium ferricyanide and two Cyanamid commerical depressants, Aerodepressants 610 and 633. A standard roughing stage was completed before the addition of the reagents in the cleaning stage. All reagents tested produced significant arsenic depression, with the best results being obtained with the addition of potassium cyanide and sodium hypochlorite. Some of the depressants activated the zinc in the process of arsenic depression. The best result was obtained with the addition of 90 g/t potassium cyanide at a pH of 10 when arsenic recovery was only 1/4 that of the value obtained for the standard test.

Traditional exploration has been undertaken by both local and overseas experts to discover tin deposits in Indonesia over almost 300 years. Indonesia is part of a tin belt which runs from Myanmar in the north through Malaysia to Singkep, Bangka, and Belitung islands in Indonesia in the south. The discovery of alluvial tin deposits is becoming harder as the more obvious geological targets are exhausted and topographical conditions become more difficult. New approaches are required to sustain successful exploration. There are indications that tin deposits can be found at depth on-shore as well as off-shore. These deposits are found associated with tough clays. On-shore tin exploration is hampered by swampy areas, while the off-shore search is often affected by difficult sea conditions. These factors lead to increases in the cost of exploration as well as the cost of subsequent production. Tin price fluctuations and environmental issues are also of major concern in the planning of the future operation of tin mining in Indonesia.

Canberra is a planned city in which the natural environment, rather than existing development and land tenure, has until recent times at least, imposed the major constraints to development. Even redevelopment poses fewer problems than for most cities. Geological conditions have, therefore, played a significant role in determining its shape and layout. The Canberra experience has relevance for major new mining and engineering projects. The role of engineering geologists and geophysicists in Canberra's development is described, and the problems arising from the geological environment are illustrated by several case histories. Four aspects are addressed: pre-development urban geology; major engineering projects; resources evaluation, including groundwater; and post-development problem-solving. The Australian Capital Territory lies within the Palaeozoic Lachlan Fold Belt. Within the ACT the belt is composed of folded and faulted metasiltstones, metasandstones and acid volcanics, intruded by a major granitic pluton. Some limestone lenses occur. The region has been part of a land mass since Late Devonian times and landscape evolution has been very complex. Geological features of special geotechnical significance include deep but variable weathering, with slight to moderate weathering along faults to at least 70 metres depth in places, and consequential foundation problems; close jointing; weathered limestone lenses with solution cavities containing clay and water; confined aquifers containing artesian water in scree deposits flanking hills; the presence of pyrite; and poor quality and low volumes of groundwater.

A series of low shock energy water resistant emlulsion based explosives have been developed by combining inert materials, such as Perlite P500, into the formulation. The material handling, water resistance and explosive properties of these mixtures were determined as a function of inert additive type, density, charge diameter and emulsion base. Of the emulsion bases tested Emulite produced the best and most stable low density mixtures ranging in density from 0.8 to 1.35 g/cm3 producing velocity of detonations (unconfined) ranging from 3000 to 5500 nits. The mixtures could be detonated successfully at these densities at diameters as low as 25mm. Low shock mixtures formed by combining Emulite with Perlite P500 were successfully trailed at the Cadjebut zinc mine in Western Australia. The performance of the explosive, at three densities, was monitored using both continuous and point to point VOD techniques. The fragmentation produced by the blasts were compared by photographic analysis. During this trial the low shock emulsion mixtures were shown to be as effective as the currently used explosives (packaged emulsion) at a significantly reduced cost.

The equilibrium phase relations in the Fe- Mn-Ti-0-S system were established at 1380 and 1485 K. The elemental distributions between the equilibrium phases were obtained by chemical- ly analysing selected samples from the phase study. The results are considered in relation to the coal reduction process for upgrading ilmenite. The beneficial effect of adding sulfur to a kiln that uses a manganese-rich feed is ex- plained by the formation of a metal-sulfide solid-solution phase that removes part of the manganese from the oxide system. The optimum conditions for operating the reduction kiln are determined, and the practical need to operate the kiln at other than optimum conditions is explained. It is shown how the experimental data can be used to predict the best compromise conditions for reduction and the resultant purity of the product.

Maximum recovery of sulphide minerals by flotation is achieved over a limited size range. Valuable particles above and below this range have a smaller probability of being recovered. In the normal grinding-flotation operation, not all valuables are reduced to the optimum size range, and therefore sub- stantial losses occur. A significant improve- ment in the size distribution is not usually possible within the conventional circuit, and a more complex arrangement may be necessary to obtain optimum recovery of the valuable mineral. This problem is considered with refer- ence to the Mt. LyeZl concentrator. The performance of the existing circuit is dis- cussed, and it is shown that losses in recovery occur in both coarse and fine sizes. Laboratory tests indicate that regrinding the coarse particles results in an increase in recovery of up to 4%. Redistribution of plant grinding capacity to reduce initial grinding power by 6% and use this capacity to regrind coarse particles was considered. It is con- cluded that overall plant efficiency would be increased by 2% provided that overloading of the regrind mill could be avoided.

This paper is concerned with the design and operation of storage and discharge facilit- ies for bulk solids handling. It presents an overview of the basic design philisophy emphas- ising the influence of bulk solid flow propert- ies and bin geometry on the flow patterns developed and how these, in turn, affect the reclaim efficiency and the bin structural in- tegrity and wear characteristics of both bins and chutes. The salient aspects of feeder design and operation will be discussed and the need to consider feeders as integral parts of the bin discharge system will be stressed.

The main mining method employed at Mt Lyell is sub-level open stoping with a typical extraction level interval of 100 m and sub-level intervals of 30 m. Currently, pillar blasts provide the major portion of broken ore and firings are in the order of 200 000 to 300 000 tonnes while future firings of 500 000 to 300 000 tonnes are planned. Improvement of blasting techniques in these mass firings has been necessary for the following reasons. 1. Extremely wet ground conditions have adversely affected ANFO performance and placed extreme pressure on the charging and priming phases. 2. As pillar blasts increase in size the problems of wet ground conditions are accentuated resulting in very slow loading of wet upholes with cartridged gelignite and unreliable charging of the remainder with ANFO. 3 Fragmentation in pillar blasts has suffered because of the above, result- ing in increased secondary breaking costs and difficulty of extraction.

Although it has long been recognised that there is a diversity of minerals associated with Victorian gold deposits, the degree to which this mineralogy is systematic or haphazard has remained uncertain. Recent work by the authors and students under their supervision permits a sharp delineation of the boundaries between different mineralogical domains, and these are interpreted in terms of recent rapid advances in Victorian tectonics, and the regional framework of Victorian gold geology described in Phillips and Hughes (1996).

Physico-chemical analyses were also carried out on surface energy and on xanthate adsorption on galena with different grain sizes. In mining and processing operations where minerals, high in pyrite and low in calcite/dolomite are processed, acid is generated, which needs to be neutralised. Ticor at Empangeni in South Africa (SA) produces rutile (TiO2), leucoxene (TiO2 plus iron compounds), titanium (Ti), zircon (Zi) and ilmenite (TiO2 plus iron compounds). Neutralisation is required in the processing plant where acid is leached into the wash water. This water needs to be treated to a quality suitable for re-use in the metallurgical process or to a higher quality to make it suitable for discharge into the Empangeni sewage system (SA). For re-use the water needs to be neutral and under-saturated with respect to gypsum while for discharge into the sewage system the sulfate concentration needs to be reduced to less than 500 mg/L (as SO4). Acid mine water is generally neutralised with lime. Disadvantages associated with lime are the costs and maintenance of the slaking equipment as well as hazards, associated with handling of the alkali. The cost of powdered limestone (CaCO3) in South Africa, a by-product, is 50 - 60 per cent cheaper than lime. A technology has been developed where limestone is used for neutralisation of acid mine water instead of lime. This development includes: Limestone handling and dosing system. A novel, robust system has been developed where waste CaCO3 from the paper industry is slurried to a constant density. A full-scale plant was constructed to evaluate its performance (Figure 4). The dosing system consists of an inclined slab onto which the limestone is stored and from where it is slurried into a make-up tank. The density of the slurry in the make-up tank is controlled via a loadcell that measures the weight of the tank (operated at constant volume) and activates/deactivates the spray of the recycle slurry onto the slab. Integrated limestone neutralisation/lime treatment process. In this process powdered CaCO3 is used for neutralisation and partial sulfate removal of acid leached from the coal washing plant. The sulfate concentration can be further reduced to below the saturation level of gypsum (ie 1200 mg/L) through gypsum crystallisation by means of lime treatment, resulting in metal precipitation (eg Fe3+ and Al3+). CO2- treatment for CaCO3 precipitation. The pH of the lime treated water can be adjusted to pH levels of 8.5 and lower using CO2. The CO2, generated during limestone neutralisation (Equation 2), can be captured and used in this stage of the process. The first two stages (limestone- and lime neutralisation) of this technology have been implemented on full-scale at Ticor to treat the effluent of the process. The constructed plant is 80 m3/hr and differs from coal processing plants by way of not containing Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the water. The CO2-treatment stage (Stage 3) will soon be implemented at IHM as part of a program to optimise the technology for maximum benefits.

This paper describes the results of the field application tests at Miike Colliery on the integrated automatization of the longwall mining system for medium thick coal seam. The purpose of the research is to develop an automatic longwall mining system which can be controlled accurately from outside of the face, and the ultimate goal is an eliminate of men from the face. Presently, the field test is being conducted in Yotsuyama mine following to a success in the performance test on surface. Remote Batch Control System for shield supports has been adapted to operate all supports from the control panel located at the entrance of the face. Remote monitoring and control system of the drum shearer has also been tested. The system makes it possible to operate the shearer either at the main gate or full automatic. Productivity and safety will be substantially improved as those systems enable to eliminate all workers from the face under the severe working conditions with high ground pressure and hot and humid atmosphere due to increasing mining depth. So far, we have been satisfied with the results of the field test and those system will be an effective countermeasure to operate the face with a high risk of rock-burst.

The 14.7 km Mt. MacDonald Tunnel beneath Rogers Pass in Canada used both drill-and-blast and machine boring methods. A unique ventilation system provides for diesel operations. The design featured minimum construction support and an unrei.nforced poured concrete lining. The west heading was excavated in a single-stage drill-and-blast operation. The east heading used a TBM top heading with a drill-and-blast keyhole bench. The choice of methods was controlled by varying geology, with up to 1,700 m rock cover. Construction performance and progress are evaluated.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are be- lieved to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteri stic 6180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the con- text of styles of mineralization.
