The nickel segregation process is one of the methods for treating nickel oxide ores. In this process nickel oxide ores are heated together with a small amount of the carbonaceous reductants and halides to about 800-950¦C. The reduced nickel segregates onto the surface of the carbonaceous reductants in the form of metallic particles which are recovered by magnetic separation or flotation. Pilot plant tests for the extraction of nickel from nickel oxide ores have been made using nickel segregation process by means of a new roasting installation which is called the "Mechanical Kiln" (2.5m~ x 3m,') with autogenous heating. Nickel oxide ores containing about 2.5%Ni were mixed with 2.5%CaC12 and 2.7%coal, and continuously charged into this installation at the rate of 60kg/h in continuous operation for 30 days per trial.

The development of present methods of pillar extraction has evolved from the very earliest of hand mining operations which were limited in scope by venti- lation and transport considerations. Conservation and safety considerations also have led to the current shortwall operations with conventional equipment and powered supports. The shortwall methods have had significant effects on safety, costs, con- servation, flexibility, and other aspects of pillar extraction. The present stage falls short of the ideal but is some guide to prediction in what direction may lie the ideal methods for the future.

This paper describes the results of investigations into the relationship between specific gravity and chemical composition in the Cockatoo Island orebody, In the early investigations the samples were classified into groups according to porosity. This resulted in high, medium and low porosity groups, the latter being further subdivided into ore and waste. Whole number tonnage factors were assigned to each group. In the later investigations the reciprocals of bulk specific gravity and true specific gravity were ex- pressed as linear combinations of iron, silica and alumina using stepwise regression. The efficiency of the models as predictors was tested by dividing the data into two sets; one of which was used to calculate the regression equation and the other to test the efficiency of the equation as

An investigation into the mechanics of sub-surface deformation caused by caving of the extracted area behind retreating longwall faces has been completed by the Subsidence Engineering Section of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Minerals and Energy. Changes in strata bulk permeability were also measured by standard packer tests undertaken before and after mining. The strata movement was measured by a multi-wire borehole instrumentation system consisting of mechanical anchors installed at different horizons in a borehole extending from the surface to the coal seam. The mechanical anchors were collected to suspended weights on the surface by stainless steel multi-strand wires. The movement of these weights was monitored as the longwall face approached and retreated past the borehole. The anchors did not move significantly until the face went past the borehole. For subcritical extraction geometry with the extraction width to mining depth ratio of 124, the caving zone extended to roughly 9 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam roof. Tensile strains within the overburden tended to be much more closely related to stratigraphy than to the proximity to the extracted seam roof. Larger tensile strains were associated with layers of sandstone, siltstone and conglomerate, whereas layers of mudstones, claystones and coal underwent much smaller strains indicating subsidence in blocks. A beller correlation was observed between pre-mining Rock Quality Designation and permeability than between rock type and permeability. This correlation was less evident in the post-mining core logs. There was an overall increase in bulk permeability after mining.

Brown and Chitombo (2007) indicated that during the last two decades, the international mining industry has been using mainly mass mining methods to extract safely and economically some of the important commodities such as copper, diamonds, gold, iron and nickel. Mass mining may be implemented either on the surface through large open pits or underground using mining methods such as sublevel, block and panel caving. Developments in the last ten years have demonstrated that caving methods can be applied successfully in strong orebodies at greater depths and in increasingly challenging geotechnical environments for which more traditional mining methods would be unsuitable, unsafe and/or uneconomic. These underground mass mining challenges require æfront endÆ investigation and analysis, robust engineering design and disciplined implementation and operation. Newcrest Mining Limited has focused its efforts on the development of gold/copper projects of substantial scale and margin. To help achieve this, the company is applying and further developing mass mining methods. These include large-scale open pits (OP) and underground mining methods such as sublevel (SLC), block (BC) and panel caving (PC). Block and panel caving now offer economies of scale opportunities for Newcrest to achieve high production rates at lower production costs; thus enabling the exploitation of mineral endowments at higher margins. This paper discusses the practical aspects of caving technologies that Newcrest continues to develop through its expertise at Telfer and Ridgeway SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps BC and Cadia East PC projects.

As open pit mining of a deposit deepens, the cost of extraction may increase up to a threshold where transitioning to mining through underground methods is more profitable. This paper provides an approach to identifying an optimal depth at which a mine should transition from open pit to underground mining. The value of a set of candidate transition depths is investigated by optimising the production schedules for each depth’s unique open pit and underground operations. By considering the sum of the open pit and underground mining portions’ value along with the cost of transitioning corresponding to each candidate transition depth, the optimal transition depth can be identified. The optimisation model presented is based on a stochastic integer program that integrates geological uncertainty. As an input, the stochastic integer program utilises a set of several stochastic simulations that represent equally probable scenarios of the mineral resource. This group of simulations describes the uncertainty in the deposit, while the optimiser aims to maximise value based on discounted profits of both the open pit and underground components of the deposit.CITATION:MacNeil, J and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Tholeiitic metabasalts comprise at least five geochemically distinct mafic volcanic associations of Late Palaeozoic age within the Gympie Province, southeast Queensland. Geochemical features indicate that parental magmas of the various metavolcanic suites were generated in contrasting tectonic regimes, although each of the suites shows some affinities with eruptives from convergent plate margin settings.Basalts from the Highbury Volcanics of the Gympie Group are island arc tholeiites (IAT) formed during an immature stage of eruptive activity in an intra-oceanic arc. They are unique among the analysed metabasites in possessing high Zr/Nb (Zr/Nb - 30) and very high Ba/Nb, and as well as low Ti/V, Ti/Zr and Ti/Y. These features are explicable solely in terms of contributions from a depleted, convecting upper mantle source, and large ion lithophile element (LILE) enriched fluids ascending from subducted oceanic crust.

The Mount Isa Mines (MIM) copper concentrator at Mount Isa processes both chalcopyrite ore from the MIM underground mine and rotary holding furnace (RHF) slag from the MIM copper smelter. There have been numerous changes to the processing practices since commissioning this concentrator in 1973. Current management of the concentrator extends from grinding and flotation to concentrate handling (thickening and filtration) and tailings disposal (fill plants, tailings thickeners and process water systems).Predominant mill feed through the concentrator is chalcopyrite ore. RHF slag is processed when concentrator production exceeds mined ore production. The chalcopyrite circuit has two stages of grinding in parallel lines (Line 1 and Line 2). Each line has parallel preflotation and rougher banks, combining into a common scavenger/retreat circuit (including regrinding) and common cleaner circuit. RHF slag may be milled in parallel with chalcopyrite, utilising Line 2 flotation roughers and a Jameson cell cleaner. All final concentrate produced is combined and pumped to the concentrate handling plant. The concentrate is thickened, pre-fluxed and filtered in hyperbaric disc filters. Fluxing specification is set by the copper smelter, and filtered product transferred via conveyor belt to the smelter concentrate storage facility.Wet fill and paste fill plants utilise flotation final tailings as hydraulic or cemented hydraulic fill for stopes underground. Cement ratios and fill plant utilisation are varied depending on underground stope fill requirements. Tailings from the adjacent lead-zinc concentrator are also processed at wet fill. All tailings that are not utilised for backfill are pumped via wet fill to three parallel tailings thickeners. Thickener underflows are gravity fed to the tailings dams with thickener overflows recycled for site process water use. In addition to summarising historical operations, this paper will provide a detailed outline of more recent changes in the concentrator flotation circuit, equipment upgrades, reagent optimisation as well as product and process optimisation at the final concentrate handling and fill plants.CITATION:Lui, W Y and Radulovic, P, 2013. From digitally record-ing networks and arrays. broadband scistnograrns of body waves that are flat to displacement and veloc-ity in at least the frequency range from 0.01 to 5.0 liz can now be routinely obtained for most carthquakes of magnitude greater than about 5.5. In contrast to data from conventional narrowband seismographs, broad-band body waves have sufficient spectral information to nvest,igate the many frequency-dependent eflects that may arise from source finiteness and from wave prop-agat ion phenomenon. Besides the usual parameters of depth. moment and focal mechanism, broadband data have sufficient spectral information to provide estimates of radiated energy, associated stresses and the frequency dependence of source parameters. Moreover. teleseis-mically recorded broadband data and near-field strong motion accelerograms overlap in the frequency band be-tween about 0.1-2.0 Hz. Thus. v it h broadband data it is possible to connect far field and near field data in order to make estimates of acceleration for almost any seismically active region of the circum-Pacific.

Renison Limited produces high and low grade tin concentrates at an annual rate of 5000 tonnes of contained tin metal. In spite of the fine average cassiterite grain size, emphasis is placed on gravity concentration methods to produce a high grade final product. Cassiterite flotation is considered and operated as a gravity circuit scavenger responsible for approximately 15 percent of recovered tin metal as a fine grained low grade concentrate. Metallurgical problems mainly result from ore-type variations which may be aggravated by a number of circulating loads. The rationalisation of circuitry is being studied to provide more effective control by operators and to allow exploitation of current control and modelling techniques.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralization occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydro- thermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz- adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy ana sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt. % NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei aria riroaolan¦s. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralization is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to determine the distribution of gold between the products of lead-zinc concentrate smelting in the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF). Bullion, speiss and slag from the ISF at Cockle Creek were used as the starting materials to evaluate the effect of gold and copper content of products on the distribution of gold between phases under conditions simulating those in the ISF hearth. The ratio of gold in bullion to gold in speiss has a mean value of approximately 1.6 and is independent of the gold content of the bullion. The distribution coefficient of gold between bullion and speiss is dependent on the copper level in speiss and is lowered by increasing copper content in speiss. The ratio of gold in bullion to gold in slag is in the range 25 to 5700 and dependent on the gold content of the bullion. For low gold concentrations in bullion of the order of 1 g/t and a bullion to slag ratio of 1:3 the gold loss to slag is expected to be approx- imately 23%. In all tests the gold in slag remained low, in the range 0.05 to 0.5 ppm provided metal prills were not suspended in Slag.

Underground development drill and blast practices have generally remained unchanged for decades. Historically, development optimisation has focused mainly on the application of perimeter control products in order to reduce overbreak, and efficiencies in development cycle times to increase advance rates. In today’s environment of ever increasing operating costs and lower ore grades, it has become even more critical to focus on the optimisation of drill and blast in development mining. It is a crucial component in ensuring mining schedules are maintained, but more importantly achieving the objective of getting to the orebody in the shortest possible time.This paper will focus on the development optimisation process used in a trial at Xstrata’s George Fisher Mine in North Queensland. Not only did the trial include the typical optimisation areas of charge loading practices, perimeter control methods, drill design standardisation and quality control processes, it also investigated the significance of delay accuracy with regards to perimeter control and drill design optimisation.One of the key measures of the trial was a comparative analysis between baseline development and development with the staged introduction of optimisation elements using 3D photogrammetry as a validation tool. A detailed cost analysis between the various stages was also a key measurable of the trial.The results of the work undertaken at George Fisher have shown that the accuracy of electronic detonators can produce significant benefits in development blasting. When combined with standard optimisation philosophies a substantial reduction in overbreak, ground support requirements and development cycle times can be achieved, whilst still being able to reduce the overall development operating costs.CITATION:Kovacs, J, 2014. Three aspects of rock mechanics, namely, in-situ stress estimation by acoustic emission (AE) method, strength of rock mass and role of chemicals to reduce the strength are covered. It is possible to detect the previously applied maximum stress by stressing a rock specimen to the point where there is a substantial increase in AE activity. This is known as Kaiser effect. From the AE signatures in the second and subsequent loadings, AE take-off point was identified more easily than in the first loading. In determining the compressive strength of rock mass, two factors have to be considered, namely, the size effect on the compressive strength of intact rock and the effect of discontinuities on the compressive strength of rock mass. Although a modified Bieniawski criterion gives best agreement with the triaxial test data, modifications have been suggested to Hoek-Brown criterion due to its popularity. It is possible to reduce the tensile strength of sandstone by saturating it with weak chemical solutions made with dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene oxide and aluminium chloride by up to 30%. In the case of compressive strength, there is no appreciable effect. The possible explanation is that the chemical solutions produce an effect on the strength of sandstone only when the failure mechanism is dominated by tensile mode.

Jameson cell pilot plant trials were conducted in a number of areas in the Red Dome gold/copper flotation plant during 1991. The aim of testwork was to reduce the amount of cyanide soluble copper reporting in tailing to the gold leach plant, and hence reduce cyanide consumption. A number of these tests were conducted in parallel with conventional flotation columns. Laboratory tests were conducted to simulate the performance of the existing plant when compared with the addition of the Jameson cell allowing an extra sulphidising phase. This paper reviews the comparison of the Jameson cell and conventional columns in recovering cyanide soluble copper, while maximising copper concentrate grade. Key parameters that are investigated are residence times, air/pulp ratios, superficial gas recoveries and size by size recoveries. A brief comparison of performance of the Jameson cell and column in the controlled potential sulphidisation process is also presented. An estimation of the reduction in cyanide consumption is given.

Maps of mineral grade used to assess mineral reserves are most commonly generated using one of the many estimation methods available such as inverse distance weighting or ordinary kriging. Most such maps incorporate a degree of spatial smoothing which is an integral part of the averaging process. In deposits with highly variable grade which include many gold deposits, this smoothing can mask the detailed geometry of the mineralization at the economic cutoff grades being considered. In underground mining, a knowledge of this geometry is important in the choice of mining method and thus in the assessment of the minable reserves.The method of conditional simulation in geostatistics can be used to generate maps of grade which reflect the actual spatial variability of grade as measured through the variograms of the drill hole data. Simulated maps can provide a number of equiprobable images of the mineralization geometry from which a more appropriate mining model of the mineralization can be developed. Multiple simulations can also be used to assess the uncertainty existing in the current knowledge of the reserves.

In the last three decades various theories have been presented to allow the estimation of the force required to cut rock. These have generally relied on an hypothesised mechanism of chip formation.The paper presents results of an experimental program completed on an unjointed artificial rock in which the force and chip geometry were measured during deep cutting with a quarter scale bulldozer tyne. The program included various depths of cut and artificial rock of varying strength. The experimental results are compared with predictions based on three expressions for cutting force. Generally the measured forces are within the range of those predicted but none of the methods predicts the cutting force with any accuracy. It is considered that the discrepancies are due, in part, to the fact the that actual shape of the chip formed in deep cutting is quite different to that assumed in developing the theories and thus the theories cannot be expected to predict the cutting forces. It is concluded that Evans and Nishimatsu's theories predict lower bound estimates of the horizontal cutting forces. Deliac and Fairhurst's approach appears to over estimate the forces required to cut rock. New methods of prediction are required based on the observed mechanisms of failure.
