A methodology for modelling dense medium cyclones is presented for cyclones operating under conditions which avoid particle interference or apex crowding. Particle interference and apex crowding are shown to result in less efficient separations and represent undesirable regimes of dense medium cyclone operation. In order to avoid apex crowding, suitable medium to ore ratios and apex diameters should be used. Cyclone density differentials should be kept below approximately 400kg.m 3 to limit loss of efficiency due to excessive particle recirculation within the cyclone. The relationship between size-by-size partition curves shows that the flow split and density of the medium within a cyclone can be related to two new parameters, the pivot partition number and pivot density. The parameters are common to each partition curve in any set of size-by-size data and are mathematically related to the familiar performance characteristics, ecart probable (Ep) and separation density. The resulting expression confirms that the Ep and separation density are directly related.

Although developed primarily for sintering tantalum, the unit to be described can be used to heat-treat metals in the form ofa bar, wire or strip, by passing a current through them. The upper temperature limit with this type of heating is the melting point of the metal being heated.The unit was designed for vacuum work, but. various gases can be used if required.Briefly, the vacuum sintering furnace consists of a bell which is counter-balanced and may be lowered onto the brass base plate which holds the electrodes. A rubber ring seal is used for vacuum work. The lower flexible grips are bolted to the brass base plate which is at earth 'potential, while the other electrode passes through the plate by way of an electrically insulated vacuum seal. This upper electrode, the height of which can be altered as desired, the lower grips, and the bell are water cooled. The vacuum line to the pumps and a line to the vacuum gauges also lead from the base plate. The more important sections of the unit are described below.THE BELLThe unit was designed so that the bell could be lifted clear of the base plate and the electrodes, thus facilitating adjustment of the latter and the mounting of the specimen to be heated. This paper outlines the processes involved in acid generation from sulphides and the key factors in identifying and predicting time dependent changes in the nature of acid mine drainage (AMD). The initial characteristics of mine water; whether drainage from exposed mining faces, runoff and seepage from waste dumps or seepage from process tailings; do not necessarily reflect the long term potential for AMD. The ultimate quality of mine drainage is a function of the interaction of many chemical, physical, biological and engineering (operational) factors. Techniques are available that can predict the qualitative nature of acid generation and mine drainage quality but accurate quantitative predictions are essentially impossible at the present time. As more and more mining operations exploit sulphide ore, the AMD and acid waste issue will become a. far greater concern. The significance of time dependent factors in the production of acid mine drainage-.is not just restricted to particuL.ar mine sites but needs to be recognised by the mining industry as a whole.

The Dachang tin field with more than one hundred million tonnes of ore at 1% tin and 3% Zn is one of the largest tin fields in the world. It comprises five carbonate replacement tin deposits, of which the Changpo deposit containing about 80 million tonnes of ore at about 1% tin is the largest deposit. The deposit, hosted by middle Devonian limestone, argillaceous limestone and black shale, is genetically related to the Longxianggei granite.The oxygen, hydrogen and carbon isotope data of minerals, rocks and fluids suggest a magmatic fluid which evolved during the crystallization of the Longxianggei granite. Mass balance calculations show that the depletions observed in 180 and 13C values of calcites from the ore bodies to the country rocks were due to continous isotopic exchange reactions between the magmatic fluid and the marine limestones at different W/R ratios and between 300 and 600¦C.

Over the last 20 years the blasting industry has progressed from the stage of being artform to a science as it is today. The use of computers to simulate blasting results has allowed blasting engineers to accurately pre- dict blast results and to optimise their blasting. This paper describes the computer blast simulator called BLASPA and its various applications in blasting. BLASPA allows the blasting engineer to predict blast results given known details of explosive properties, their distribution, rock type and properties, hole size, burden, spacing, collar and subdrill. The simulator runs mathematical situations and outputs numerical estimates of fragmentation and muckpile results. The paper discusses results which show that the mathematical outputs correlate very closely with actual results seen in the field, thus confirming the validity of the simulator. BLASPA can be used to help improve blast design by predicting stress levels in the rock mass and consequent rock breakage.

The Waft River gold deposit is hosted by low grade metasediments which have been intruded by a dacite/andesite porphyry complex. Wafi River is classified as a high sulphur, epithermal type gold deposit having: a high sulphur content, a close association with calc-alkalic igneous rocks, zoned advanced argillic and argillic alteration, and enargite group minerals. Gold occurs as minute inclusions in pyrite and pyrrhotite within intermediate dickite/kaohnite - interlayered illitic clay alteration zones. Central leached silicic, alunite and pyrophyllite zones and peripheral chloritic zones are low in gold. The gold mineralisation at Wafi is interpreted to have been predominantly caused by mixing of hot upwelling acidic magmatic mineralised fluids with cool, neutral meteoric/hydrothermal fluids within permeable sediments. Locallised high grade breccia zones are encountered within the porphyry. An initial resource in excess of I million ounces Au has been defined.

The Woodcutters deposit, 65 km south- southeast of Darwin, N.T., consists of a series of veins of pyrite, sphalerite, and galena with some silver, cadmium, antimony, and arsenic minerals. The veins are hosted by the Early Proterozoic Whites Formation, a sequence of black slates with interbedded carbonate rocks and minor ash tuffs. The known orebodies occur about 300 to 500 metres above the contact of Whites Formation with the underlying Coomalie Dolomite, which consists of dolomite and magne- site. The stratigraphic setting is lithologic- ally similar to that of the Mt. Isa deposit, Queensland. The orebodies are replacement veins occ- urring along fault and dyke structures which are sub-parallel to the axes of a double-nosed faulted anticline. The orebodies are in part associated with two unusual carbonatized lam- prophyric dykes. The dykes were intruded after the fold and its slaty cleavage were formed. The ore has replaced the dykes and host rocks and is therefore late-stage hydrothermal miner- alization. The known orebodies are open at depth. A "bonanza" of high-grade ore occurs at the upper part of the largest orebody and is currently the subject of an open cut mine planning study by a consortium of companies headed by Nicron Resources Ltd.

Before the arrival of the first Europeans, Aborigines living in the northern Flinders Ranges mined ochre - an earthy form of haematite used for pigment.The discovery of copper ore at Kapunda and Burra in the 1840s stimulated the early settlers to prospect further north along the ranges. Many of the new discoveries were not properly evaluated and companies were floated on the most tenuous evidence.

Ashton Mining Limited is currently one of the active companies undertaking gold exploration in Indonesia. Presently 7 Contract of Work areas are being explored for hard rock and alluvial gold. Hard rock exploration is focussed on the Tertiary volcanic arc terrains in which a variety of epithermal mineralisation styles have been identified. At the regional stage remote sensing techniques using Landsat, Spot and SLAR imagery where available, and photogeological studies are carried out in parallel with regional reconnaissance fieldwork programmes. These involve geological mapping and geochemical drainage sampling. Remote sensing techniques have proven useful in both the extrapolation of known geology and the identification of tectonically favourable settings as controls to mineralisation and volcanicity. The variety of mineralisation styles and settings is reflected in the highly variable geochemical signatures encountered. This has necessitated the refinement of sampling methods and sample preparation techniques for pan concentrate, stream sediment and soil samples in specific project areas. At the detailed prospect stage, mapping with particular attention to structural controls, wallrock alteration assemblages identified by petrog- raphy and XRD clay mineralogy, have proved useful in focussing drill targets. Drilling to date has utilised conventional diamond core drilling methods, the use of lightweight, man-portable "Winkie"-type rigs and hammer auger bedrock sampling systems. Geophysics methods successfully employed on various projects have included airborne magnetics and radiometrics, detailed ground magnetic surveys, VLF-EM and SIROTEM.

Morwell Open Cut is a continuous mining operation employing 5 buck- etwheel excavators, I bucket chain excavator and 54 conveyors. The combined bunkering capacity at both client Power Stations represents less than 12 hours maximum coal demand. This creates an extremely dynamic operating environment, which is further complicated with significant variations in both excavating and transportation plant capabilities. To achieve set objectives, including- I adequate reserves, 2 coal supply reliability, 3 cyclic plant maintenance, 4 minimal cost of coal, scheduling of the operation requires constant monitoring and reappraisal. Investigations are in progress to develop a computer based scheduling tool capable of simulating the complex operating environment. A review of computer scheduling packages currently available within the State Electricity Commission of Victoria has found limitations making most unsuitable for the task. The type of package found to be most suited is a knowledge based system ('Expert System')capable of operating within a set of rules defined by the user. Work is proceeding on the development of a knowledge base to test the effectiveness of Personal Computer based `Expert Systems'.

Gold miners have been underperforming the price of gold for a number of years. So why has the æmarketÆ undervalued our gold miners relative to what they have been mining? The low valuation ascribed to gold mining companies is largely attributable to their profit performance. In the period since 2006 the price of gold in A$ has risen about $900/oz, but the real cash margin (operating cash costs + cost of finding and/or acquiring deposits + the cost of bringing them into production) has only risen about A$100. Rising operating costs are a major part of this reduction in real margin. Energy and labour costs have risen more than the inflation rates across a number of countries as have taxes, royalties, etc. There are however, more significant contributors to the rising cost base. Firstly, in 2006 the average gold grade was 2.0 g/t; today it is 1.3 g/t. Secondly, strip ratios (for surface mines) have increased by 19 per cent during this time. Open cut mining equipment unit output across the world has dropped by 26 per cent during 2006 - 2012. Finally, costs have risen by 55 per cent during this time period. Consequently, there is now 3.8 times more mining cost required to produce an ounce of gold from surface mines compared with 2006. The decline in gold grade looks to be a permanent trend as does increasing strip ratio if output is to be maintained. Costs will continue to rise although cost control will be necessary. Reversing the decline in equipment performance and closing the gap between median and best practice provides the hope for a sustainable reversal of cost increases. The current gap between best practice and median performance has grown to 112 per cent for mining trucks, 168 per cent for excavators and 169 per cent for front end loaders. Closing this gap is the potential for a more profitable future. For most gold mining companies improving mining efficiency is not an option; it is an imperative.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2013. The results of a detailed acid rock drainage (ARD) prediction program were used to revise the waste rock segregation criteria at the Restigouche open pit mine. Waste rock at the site was predominately derived from altered volcanic rocks that hosted a massive sulfide lead/zinc orebody. The program assessed the five years of drainage chemistry from both the potentially acid generating and the non-acid generating waste rock storage facilities in addition to laboratory-based kinetic test results. Material-specific leaching characteristics including relative metal-release rates and neutralisation potential depletion rates were determined from 12 laboratory-based kinetic tests. Solid-phase analyses indicated that, although pyrite was typically the most abundant sulfide mineral in the waste rock, its abundance varied significantly as documented by total sulfur contents ranging from 4.0 per cent. Kinetic test results were used to establish revised waste rock segregation criteria based on total sulfur content and neutralisation potential. The revised criteria maintain that waste material with a total sulfur content 4.0 per cent as potentially acid generating. When present in sufficient quantities, ankerite provided an effective source of neutralisation potential for the range of observed sulfide oxidation rates. Kinetic testing documented that up to 6 kg CaCO3/t was ineffective at neutralising acidity in samples that contained >4 per cent S. The carbonate molar ratio measured from the humidity cells was adjusted to reflect the stoichiometry of the ankerite and applied as an NP/AP criteria for waste rock containing 0.1 <S per cent <4.0.

A strong commitment from the industry to this view has been instrumental in creating an efficient, profitable and productive industry based on modem production processes, sophisticated equipment and a multi skilled workforce. As the industry continues to develop, and the skills and knowledge needed by productive workers continues to expand, the training processes adopted by the industry will need to develop in parallel, not only making use of the latest advances in learning theories, instructional design and technology, but also using these knew ideas in more efficient ways.

Overlying the coal deposits of the Sydney Basin are several lakes and other bodies of water. These include the Pacific Ocean, Lake Macquarie, the Tuggerah Lakes and the stored waters of the dams of the New South Wales Metropolitan Water Sewerage and Drainage Board. The coal beneath these bodies of water amounts to hundreds of millions of tons. Colliery workings have approached these areas of water and in some instances first 1"orkings of bord and pillar have taken place oi_eshh the water. he problem which now faces mine manage- and other interested authorities involves the determination of the maximum ;mount of coal which can be safely extracted from beneath the water. There are many factors to be considered including the depth of cover, seam thickness, geological details and strata movements.

During the last 20 years the CSIRO Division of Manufacturing Technology, through its research and development program, has made a substantial contribution towards understanding the pressure die casting process. Much of this work focused on the hot chamber die casting of zinc, where the importance of achieving optimum flow of metal into the die cavity, combined with the correct thermal balance of the tool, is critical to the production of high quality castings. Having developed a fuller understanding of the heat and fluid flow occurring in the pressure die casting process, CSIRO sought to make this information available to the industry in a form where it could be readily used by die casting engineers. This led to the development of DMT-CASTFLOW and DMT-CASTHERM, two unique, PC-based, die design software packages. DMT-CASTFLOW provides facilities for designing running and gating systems while DMT-CASTHERM enables the die designer to optimise the cooling and/or heating requirements of the die. These two packages are now being sold internationally. This paper will describe some of the major features and benefits that can be derived by using DMT-CASTFLOW and DMT-CASTHERM panicularly in the design of zinc pressure die casting dies.

While convergence of plates at a subduction zone produces shortening at the toe of the overriding plate, this deformation is localized to the frontal 100 km or so of the plate. There is increasing evidence that the state of strain in back-arcs, volcanic arcs, and possibly the entire forearc is extensional. The most likely cause of this extension is rollback of the subducting plate and trenchward advance of the overriding plate. Arcs are thermally weakened, and are activated repeatedly through time. The primary expression of the extensional state of strain is spreading of the weak arc material, either by splitting the arc or by back-arc spreading behind it. The Far Fanning gold deposit is situated 60 kilometres south-west of Townsville (Fig. 1). Previous recorded production is 3756 tonnes returning about 1600 ounces of gold. This has been taken from surface and shallow underground workings- scattered over the strike length of the deposit of 1700 metres. The main production period was from 1895 to 1908.Previous exploration involving extensive trenching and sampling has been: carried out intermittently. since the 1930's, by Gold Mines of Australia (1932), Placer (1974), Anaconda (1975), Marathon (1980-8-1), Aberfoyle (1981-82), and The Northern Queensland Company (NQC) (1983-present).In 1980 Marathon undertook an extensive drilling programme to test the oxidised mineralisation. Over 200 percussion holes and- 7 diamond holes were drilled along traverse lines spaced 29 to 103 metres apart covering a strike length of around 1800 metres.

Myuna Colliery long term ventilation requirements were included as part of the overall planning of colliery construction and underground development. Ventilation, during the simultaneous sinking of two drifts and the downcast shaft, was accomplished by established methods of ducted exhaust and blower fans. Drivages for the 3 seam interconnections of shaft and drifts were ventilated by extension and duplication of the exhaust systems. Ventilation, for the below seam extension of the belt drift, construction of between seam and below seam bins, and the completion of a circular between seam drift, required a step by step changeover to a temporary main ventilation exhaust fan mounted adjacent to the top of the completed downcast shaft. The second, permanent upcast, shaft was commenced and colliery production started one seam at a time, using the transport drift, while the underground bins, belt and between seam drifts were completed. The uocast shaft was completed and a connection made in the upper seam, completing all contract mining and allowing the main fan to be erected.
