Attempt has been made to determine the nature of charge on activated carbon surface by studying the electro-kinetic properties of the carbon in the presence of cations, anions and aurocyanide solutions. The zeta-potential measurements were made in the presence of individual ions and also in combinations. The cations and anions chosen were those commonly associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area. It was found that the iso-electric point of Norit Carbon was at pH 4.45; below this pH the charge was positive, while above, it was negative. In the absence of gold cyanide solutions and in the presence of individual cations the i.e.p. shifted to the alkaline range (pH 7.2-8.5) while in the presence of anions the i.e.p. was shifted to less than pH 3.5. In the presence of aurocyanide solutions, the iso-electric point was still in the acid region irrespective of whether anions or cations were present. The probable mechanism for such a behaviour has been attempted after measuring the specific conductivities of solutions before and after gold adsorption, by studies using the electron- probe-mirco-analyser, and S.E.M. on the carbon surface.

Garden Well is a shear-hosted Archaean orogenic gold deposit located 100 km north of Laverton, Western Australia. The Garden Well processing plant is designed for a nominal 491 t/h milling rate and annual capacity of 4 Mt. The plant has three key innovations:1. a scrubbing circuit, expected to reduce grinding power consumption by up to 20 per cent2. a secondary cycloning/gravity circuit, providing a second opportunity for gravity gold recovery (additionally, the circuit effectively increases the leach residence time of the coarse gold bearing fraction of the leach feed by approximately 60 per cent, without any additional tankage)3. the use of mid-stream oxygenation to enhance gold recovery.The Garden Well deposit is free-milling with overall laboratory gravity/leach gold recoveries exceeding 95 per cent at a P80 grind size of 150 ¦m. Three mineralogical domains have been identified: oxide, transition and fresh, with the fresh domain having subdomains of fresh ultramafic and fresh shale. There is a high component of gravity recoverable gold in all three domains.This paper will discuss these innovations and the design challenges and the risk mitigation strategies that were adopted to ameliorate the prototyping risk. Recovery of gold by smelting zinc dust concentrate has been carried on at Lake View and Star, Ltd., since July, 1930, when the Merrill-Crowe precipitation plant was first put into operation.Part I describes the development of current gold-room practice, commencing with the clean-up of the MerrillCrowe plant, a procedure that has not materially changed since its inception, and then shows how modifications to straight roasting and smelting became necessary, following a gradual increase in the copper content of the ore treated by the mill.Present smelting practice converts most of the copper into a mixed copper-lead matte, thE sulphur being supplied by the addition of flotation concentrates containing about 35% sulphur as pyrite. The process yields gold bullion of a sufficiently high grade to send to the Royal Mint, but until 1943, suffered from the disadvantage of giving matte and slag by-products high in gold and silver, that were not recovered directly but had to be sent to a smelter.Part Il gives details, of experimental work cnrried out since 1943 which led .to a process for the satisfactory and economic recovery of not only the gold and silver, but also the copper from these, hitherto, troublesome by-products. Nevertheless, incidence of matte in a smelt has always been considered undesirable, and it is hoped that eventually it will be obviated by removing most of the copper from the zinc slime before smelting.Part III indicates the methods by which this might be achieved, and outlines the experimental work that has been done up to the present.

The banded nature of the quartz veins which form the Empire lode at the Golden Cross mine, is perhaps their most striking feature. Petrographic studies show that significant differences occur between the bands in terms of textures, quartz grain size, calcite, adularia and kaolinite content, and the form, concentration and mineralogy of sulfide phases. The 818Oqu i values of individual bands within the vein material range from 7.3-10.9%x. Calculations show that the 818Oqäa,u values can be adequately explained by temporal variations in the system temperature, boiling and/or variations in the systems fluid/rock ratios.

A regional geochemical exploration programme commenced in July 1983, based upon low-density sampling of lateritic duricrust over parts of the Yilgarn Block of Western Australia. This resulted in recognition of an area significantly anomalous in chalcophile elements that progressively led to the discovery of the Johnston Range gold deposits in 1985. The deposits, on the Barlee 1:250,000 map sheet, occur in four mineralized zones, and production is expected to commence during 1988. The programme leading to the Johnston Range discoveries was a collaborative research/ applications study between the AGE Joint Venture (Greenbushes Ltd., St. Joe Minerals, and from 1985, Sons of Gwalia NL) and the CSIRO Laterite Geochemistry Research Group (Smith, 1987). It built upon a precursor project sponsored by Greenbushes Tin Ltd that commenced in 1980 and arose from an orientation laterite research project in the Greenbushes rare metal pegmatite district (Smith et at., 1987). Both were multi-commodity programmes and included the search for gold deposits. Basic methodologies for sampling and data interpretation have been described by Smith and Perdrix (1983) and Smith et at. (1984). Continuous geochemical coverage of designated parts of greenstone belts was sought using a triangular grid of 3-km or 1-km spacing, depending upon the expected prospectivity of the areas and the size and characteristics of the ore deposit targets. The Osborne Mine commenced production from an open pit in December 1994 with the first ore being hauled from underground one year later. Currently all ore is hauled up a decline by trucks until the shaft system is commissioned in early-1998. The mine is hosted within a multiply deformed and complex sequence of metamorphic, igneous and metasomatic rocks of mid Proterozoic age that are concealed beneath 20-40 metres of Mesozoic sedimentary cover. Epigenetic and largely hypogene copper - gold mineralisation occurs in a close spatial relationship with quartz - magnetite ironstones and is an important example of a significant mineralisation style in the Mt Isa inlier. Life of mine concentrator production, to year end 1997, totals 3.2 Mt of ore at 3.40 per cent Cu and 1.13 g/t Au. Total metal produced was 97 000 tonnes of copper and 2900 Kg of gold (95 600 oz) from some 348 000 tonnes of dry concentrates averaging 28.01 per cent Cu and 6.99 g/t Au. At the start of 1998 OsborneÆs total measured and indicated resource was stated at 11.38 Mt at 3.24 per cent Cu and 1.21 g/t Au with an ore reserve of 11.42 Mt at 2.90 per cent Cu and 1.09 g/t Au. Exploration efforts in and around the mine have been increased since 1996 and have resulted in an early success, with a 28 per cent increase in ore reserves since mine start-up, and the establishment of a 1.5 Mt inferred resource open to depth. During 1997 the performance of the concentrator has exceeded expectations with throughput having been increased to 1.45 Mt per annum. The Mining Cycle at Osborne has proceeded from discovery through feasibility and is currently seen to be in the latter part of the development stage and/or the early part of an expansion stage. This paper will describe the role of geology and exploration within these stages and will highlight how a number of key interpretations and decisions based on geology have both favourably and unfavourably affected the project.

This paper reviews the geochemistry of weathered nickeliferous sulphidic and lateritic profiles, the supergene behaviour of nickel and ore-associated elements, and their implications for exploration in an attempt to distinguish between barren and mineralised nickeliferous profiles. Nickel is an abundant accessory element in ultramafic rocks with background concentrations in some units up to 0.25 weight per cent. Ore-grades in fresh rock are mostly associated with massive and disseminated sulphide zones within magnesium-rich layered ultramafic sequences. In lateritic weathered terrain, nickel is also concentrated in the regolith profile. This process not only upgrades nickel in the gossanous weathered product of sulphidic deposits, but for sub-economic sulphide zones and some ultramafic rocks, is sufficient to result in a supergene resource. Ore-grade accumulations of nickel in regolith after sulphide-poor ultramafic rocks are referred to as lateritic deposits. Nickel sulphide zones and their ferruginous weathering products are collectively referred to as sulphidic deposits and are the major source of nickel in Western Australia. Mineral exploration in the Yilgam Block is hampered by deep lateritic weathered profiles (eg Butt and Sheppy, 1975; Smith, 1977; 1982). During the nickel boom of 1967 - 1972, most discoveries resulted from the location of outcropping nickeliferous gossan and ironstone. Exposed ultramafic terrain with nickel sulphide potential were explored intensively, mostly by gossan and soil sampling. However, up to 85 per cent of the area of the Yilgarn Block is buried by transported regolith. In these covered areas, barren and mineralised rock responses at the surface are similar and soil sampling produced unreliable results due to many false anomalies. A statistical, multi-element approach to regional geochemical exploration has evolved. Potential trace element indicators investigated, include Co, Cr, Cu, Ir, Mn, Pb, Pd, Pt, Sc, Se, and Zn. In recent years, trace element ratios have also been tested with varying degrees of Success.

Limnological processes are often overlooked when trying to assess the long-term water quality of pit lakes. It is essential to deal with these aspects, since they determine the geochemical and redox conditions around the submerged reactive rocks. Underground mining at East Sullivan (northwestern Quebec, Canada) stopped in 1966. Two adjacent stopes, 91 and 106 m deep, were left open to the surface, with roughly circular apertures of about 7700 and 18 000 m2. Water filling of the two glory holes went on over three decades and overflow began in 1999. Surface water pHs values were near neutrality as late as 1994 (6.3 - 7.0) but had become acidic by 1999 (2.6 - 3.5). Limnological processes were investigated in late-1999 and early-2000, with temperature measurements at 1 m intervals and sampling of the water columns before and after the late fall density inversions. A strong chemocline-thermocline was observed at 15 m. Above the chemocline, the water had low pH (3.2), no alkalinity, and low Na, Ca and sulfate. Below the chemocline, the concentrations of these parameters and the pH increased, with pH at 5.5 - 6. Consistent with the low pH values present in the upper 15 m, the concentrations of Al, Cd, Cu, and Zn were high near surface, and decreased below the chemocline. Dissolved oxygen concentrations as well as Eh decreased with increasing depth. Alkalinity integrated over the entire water column below the chemocline was at least six times larger than the acidity inferred from Fe2+ and Fe3+ concentrations. The temperature survey showed that seasonal density inversions do occur in the water column. The inversions do not involve the entire water body, since the surface to depth ratio is too small for a complete overturn. Oxygen from surface waters is carried to the bottom where it oxidises sulfides, until its depletion. Residual Fe2+, stable under anoxic conditions, is displaced upward by the next dense water incursion. It eventually reaches the thermocline, but only after many successive incursions. There, its oxidation to Fe3+ allows hydrolysis, which consumes dissolved and wall-rock alkalinity. It is only in 1999 that alkalinity was finally exhausted and that the pH shifts to acid values. The low pHs in the surface waters allow a build up of Fe3+ and Al3+, and desorption of metals from colloids. Buffering is assumed to be controlled by wall-rock oxyhydroxides in surface waters, and by carbonate minerals in the bottom waters. Because the seasonal overturns are far from being complete, the large amounts of alkalinity acquired from the wall-rock in the bottom waters cannot balance the acidity of near surface waters. Hence the surface water is acidic.

BHP has used many innovative techniques when recruiting its workforce for the Cannington Project. Looking for a balance of experience and enthusiasm it was necessary to develop pre-selection tests to reduce the initial number of applicants to a manageable number for first interviews in Townsville. Success at this stage led to an applicant, and their spouse, to go through a second interview at the mine site. The full process from application to job offer took up to six months, but the results were felt to be worth the effort. The approach taken has resulted in a highly motivated and flexible workforce. This paper outlines the philosophies behind CanningtonÆs recruitment process, highlights some of the issues associated with the approach, and offers some measures of the outcomes.

"On 9 February 2014, bushfire embers landing on exposed coal in a disused pit at the Hazelwood mine in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley ignited a coal fire that burned for 45 days. The fire was the largest and longest burning mine fire to occur in the Latrobe Valley (Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry, 2016). Two Victorian Government Boards of Inquiry have been held into the Hazelwood mine fire. The most recent, in 2015, included consideration of the regulation and implementation of rehabilitation practice at Hazelwood and the other two brown coalmines of the Latrobe Valley (Loy Yang and Yallourn; Government Gazette, 2015).The 2015 Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry commissioned Accent Environmental Pty Ltd (Accent) to undertake a review of the financial mechanisms for mine rehabilitation and closure adopted in Australia and overseas (Accent, 2015). Specifically, Accent was engaged to identify ‘any practical, sustainable, efficient and effective alternative mechanisms to ensure rehabilitation of the mines as required by the [Victorian] Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990’ in accordance with Terms of Reference 10 (c) (Government Gazette, 2015).The review by Accent included consideration of a range of financial instruments such as bank guarantees, trust funds and insurance. It considered a number of financial assurance systems in operation in Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, Canada and the United States. These systems included: full and discount financial assurance systems predefined liability proportion systems pooled fund systems the use of post-closure financial mechanisms such as trust funds (Accent, 2015).What lessons can be learnt from other jurisdictions? The history of the Ph-Cu-Zn mineralisation in the orthampton Block of Western Australia has been further investigated. It was hoped that (1) Rh-Sr studies on partially-remelled granulites, wall-rocks to the dolerite dykes, should date the dolerite intrusion, (2) Rh-Sr data on hydrothermally-altered dolerite should date the sulphide mineralisation, (3) Pb model ages on the galenas might provide an independent dating of the mineralisation, in addition to any geochemical information that might be derived. Only the second dating aim was fulfilled, but the Pb isotope data, when combined with the Rh-Sr data, have permitted deductions about U, Th and Pb abundance changes during the regional metamorphism, and about a possible source of the ore Pb. In detail the following has been found. (1) The partially-remelted granulitic wall rocks yield a scattered whole-rock Rh-Sr isochron which seems not to have been reset by the dyke intrusion (age 1037 ± 146 Ma, with initial Sr ratio 0.7171 ± 0·0054, MSWD = 111). This date agrees well with that reported previously for granulites from another locality; together theyestablish the time the metamorphic period closed. (2) The hydrothermally-altered dolerites yield a Rh-Sr whole-rock date 434 ± 16 Ma, with initial Sr ratio 0.7072 ± 0·0029 and MSWD = 31, taken as referring to the time of Ph-Zn mineralisation. This contrasts with a report of much older palaeomagnetic and K-Ar datings of the dolerite (not less than 550 Ma, possibly older) and suggests that neither the dolerites nor their heat have had any connection with the mobilisation of the Pbscavenging solutions. (3) The Pb isotope ratios of galenas from the ores yield a well-correlated regression which is not amenable to any of the model-age calculations. (4) The Pb-isotopic trends negate any genetic connection between dolerite and mineralisation, but the country-rock granulites could be the Pb source. (5) Combination of the Rh-Sr dates and the Pb data in a "simultaneous isochrons" construct permits the inference of major losses from the system during the regional metamorphism, in the order U>Pb>Th, with substantial homogenisation of the remaining Pb. This left a wide range in local UlPb and Th/U among the source rocks which eventually were scavenged by the mineralising solutions. (6) These geochemical deductions are shown to be compatible with previously-published information on the abundance ofU and Th in the Northampton Block granulites, which are thus seen to be credible as source rocks for the ore lead.

This paper discusses the considerations for optimum maintenance of critical ore handling infrastructure in order to minimise the cost to the business of maintenance periods. As maintenance periods are a direct interruption to production, time is of the essence and careful management of shutdown periods is essential. The ore pass systems currently in use at Xstrata Copper û Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 30 years old and have had significant wear over the years. The maintenance of these passes and their brows and chutes in a production situation is a challenge as it can potentially expose personnel to high risk situations in addition to the production interruptions. Some alternatives for mitigating the risk of working in ore passes including plugging and ballooning are described. Criteria are included for selecting a method for the safe entry into a given ore pass. Experience in adapting the method of ore pass plugs and some lessons learnt in the process are also discussed.

Following the success of calcrete sampling at Challenger, calcrete sampling has been widely adopted as the primary exploration technique for gold exploration, in the Gawler Craton. Calcrete is uniformly distributed over large areas and produces discrete gold anomalies. This allows drilling to focus on specific gold anomalous targets. However, despite widespread use of calcrete sampling, very little is known of the origin of calcrete in the Gawler Craton, and the link between calcrete gold anomalies and primary mineralisation. In an attempt to understand this association Lisa Gibbons recently completed an honours project at the Old Well Prospect approximately 45 km SSE of Tarcoola. Her work is part of a collaboration between CRCLEME, MESA and MIM Exploration. At Old Well, a calcrete anomaly (>10 ppb Au)covers an area approximately 7 km x 2 km with a peak value of 97 ppb Au. The study looked at the regolith as a whole, processes of its formation and nature of mineralisation within it. She was able to combine previous calcrete and drilling results with her own observations. The results from this study highlighted problems in relating surface calcrete anomalies to in situ gold mineralisation.

Consumable materials used in mines are often transported to the working areas down shallow angle decline shafts, typically at anywhere between 10¦ and 30¦ to the horizontal. The winding equipment is usually a relatively small single-drum winder and the material is transported in one or more cars, running on rails in the decline. The winding rope is attached directly to the cars, which are mechanically coupled together. For small rock hoisting declines, the cars are replaced with hoppers or skips. The winder is normally of basic design, fitted with only the minimum required safety devices and very elementary brake control. Since these winders are not ælicensedÆ and are usually located in remote areas, the standard of maintenance on the installations is often poor, leading to frequent accidents, resulting in runaways, derailments and broken ropes. These problems can be overcome easily with the application of the rope haulage principle. When large volumes of ore have to be transported to surface, belt conveyors are used on shallow angle inclines, or high-capacity friction winders are used in vertical shafts. Conveyors are limited to inclines no steeper than 14¦ and vertical shafts with large friction or drum type winders are extremely capital-intensive. Rope haulage systems can be used on decline shafts where the inclination is too steep for belt conveyors and too shallow for conventional drum winders. Rope haulage systems also offer a variety of safety, technical and cost advantages over other winding and transport systems. This paper describes the adaptation of the rope haulage principle to modern requirements and, combined with 21st century electronic technology, explains how the principle can be used as an efficient, safe and practical solution to some problems associated with the transport of materials, personnel and ore in mines. The authors describe the designs, methods of operation, safety aspects, automated control, loading and unloading facilities of modern rope haulage systems used for transporting personnel, material and ore. This paper considers a variety of systems already designed for different applications, from small material-only installations to multi-purpose and large rock-hoisting systems with payloads as much as 180 t. It also describes in more detail, a material transporting system recently commissioned in South Africa.

With the aim of producing a concentrate with silica content lower than 1.0 per cent SiO2, laboratory experiments were conducted using a sample of the final concentrate from the Samarco iron ore flotation plant (mechanical cells circuit). The sample contained 3.08 per cent SiO2. This sample was split in two size ranges: >105 ¦m and 2. The >105 ¦m fraction, representing 23.3 per cent of the initial mass, was re-ground to 100 per cent 2 content were obtained. Considering the mass proportions of the two size fractions, the calculated silica content of the combined concentrate was 0.68 per cent, which is considered satisfactory for the objective of this investigation. The major reasons for the higher (0.90 per cent) silica content of the concentrate from the coarse fraction are the presence of silicon in the lattice of goethite and the presence of residual silicious slimes in the pores of porous hematite.

This brief overview of the history of Brown Coal mining in Victoria is a luncheon presentation -I do not intend to make it indigestible with extensive listings of resources or production. There is a vast pantry of collated historical records and of vari- ous predictive studies available for the enquired with a hearty digestion. A gourmet collation is provided in The Aus IMM Monograph No 11 published in 1984 entitled "Victoria's Brown Coal-A HUGE FORTUNE IN CHANCERY", currently still on offer by the Institute and available at a bargain price in the foyer at this conference. Monograph No 11 also provides a feast of excellent references on the theme of Victorian Brown Coal assembled by the several contributors. In contrast, my presentation paper is a fast-food service, extracts from the printed paper only-you have no choice-you "get what you get" and in small quantity. Gold mineralisation at the Macraes Gold Project is hosted in the Hyde-Macraes shear zone and can be traced for ~30km along strike, although economic resources are confined to a 7 km section in the vicinity of the Macraes township. The shear zone, which typically dips at a low angle (~20 o ) to the NE, is bounded by an upper hanging wall shear and a lower footwall fault. Mineralisation occurs along the hangingwall of the shear zone as well as in low angle concordant shears and stockworks. Ore types include graphitic cataclasites with variable amounts of quartz veining, ælode schistsÆ and quartz-vein stockworks. Rehabilitation at the mine has focused on creating an environmentally benign site dominated by pasture to allow continuation of the traditional pre-mine farming economy. Changing regional economics, continued urbanisation and a reduction in traditional employment opportunities has seen a rethink in the long-term rehabilitation outcomes. The community has recognised that the rehabilitated site will provide the basis of a viable tourism venture and the creation of a Heritage and Art Park (working title æGolden Point ParkÆ) is the culmination of that process.

The problem of metering fine particulate material at low flowrate is often encountered in metallurgical experiment. This note describes a feeder which wa developed to provide metered flows of copper sulphide concentrate in the range of 0'1-0'7 g/min.It is believed that the present device is easier to operate than previously described feeders (e.g. Hamor and Smith, 1971). It may have applications in the field of analytical chemistry, as well as in metallurgical investigations.

The Brightwater conveyance system is located near Seattle, Washington in the north-western United States. The East Contract portion of the system consists of a 4.3 km long, 5.9 m diameter tunnel in soft ground and two large shafts constructed in challenging soil conditions. The two shafts are situated side-by-side in an urban valley. One will house an influent structure to direct incoming sewage and outgoing treated effluent, while the other will house a 645 megalitre per day (ML/d) influent pump station. The tunnel contains four pipelines: two force mains to convey untreated wastewater eastward from the new pump station to a new treatment plant, one gravity-pressure pipeline to convey treated effluent westward to a new outfall in Puget Sound, and one high-pressure pipeline to convey reclaimed water from the treatment plant to downstream distribution points. The shafts and the tunnel presented many design challenges. Groundwater is near the surface in the area surrounding the shafts, and compressible peat and clay soils preclude dewatering during construction. These and other challenges were encountered during design of the pump station shaft and multiple-pipe tunnel. The challenges were addressed by a design that includes a dual intersecting circular cell shaft (referred to as æthe peanutÆ) and a single tunnel into which stacked pipes will be æstuffedÆ. This paper discusses the design approach and design details for both elements.

The chemical oxidation kinetics of sphalerite by Fe(III) was studied at various temperatures and size fractions in sulphate media. The kinetics of Zn extraction followed a pore diffusion control mechanism with an apparent activation energy of 54-58 kJ mole. This figure, although high for a pore diffusion control process, is consistent with other studies carried out in sulphate media. An empirical statistical model, relating the extraction time to % Zn extraction, average particle size and temperature, is described by log 1 = 12.22 - 0.017% Ext. - 1.76 log D Av t - 2954 T Parallel studies were also carried out investigating the biological oxidation of sphalerite utilizing the acidophilic autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus Ferroxidans. The effect of such kinetic parameters as pulp density, particle size and Fe(III) on bacterial growth rate and consequently zinc extraction rate, were studied and where appropriate, optimum conditions for bacterial growth were specified. Based on the results of chemical and biological leaching studies, it was apparent that rapid zinc extraction from sphalerite was predominently due to oxidation by Fe(III). The biological oxidation process catalyses the oxidation and regeneration of Fe(III). The proposed combined chemical-biological leach system was simulated in semi continuous fashion.
