Surface wave formation induced by a high-strength submerged jet in a bottom blown metallurgical vessels has been studied experimentally by using one-seventh water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) reactor with two different tuyere configurations. Experimental results have been discussed in terms of the wave period, wave frequency and wave amplitude with respect to air injection rate and tuyere configuration at a 0.23 m bath height. The results from high speed photography observations displayed the formation of rotating surface waves which circulates within the water model. It was found that the frequency and the amplitude increased with gas injection rate. The wave period for off-centre nozzle orientation was found to be lower than those of the centre configuration. The experimental results also showed that the frequency of a rotating wave increases when the tuyere orientation becomes off-centred . The predicted amplitudes were in very good agreement with the experimental values over a range of gas flowrates between 0.00599m 3/s to 0.01081 m 3/s.

Chelopech Mining EAD (CMEAD) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dundee Precious Metals Inc (DPM) and operates the Chelopech underground mine and processing facility located in Bulgaria. The final product sold is a flotation concentrate containing copper minerals with associated gold and silver. The increase in production from 0.6 to 1.0 Mt/a by 2009 occurred with the original (1975) secondary/tertiary crushing, and primary/secondary ball mill circuits. As part of the mine/mill upgrade project to 2.0 Mt/a, a new single stage semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and ancillary equipment was installed, replacing the original circuits, with commissioning occurring during the first half of 2011. Aspects of the design, commissioning and operation of the new comminution facility are the subjects of this paper.An extensive program of comminution characterisation test work was completed in 2004/2005, which indicated moderate hardness and competency characteristics. The characteristics were considered suitable for a range of comminution approaches which were assessed with respect to power requirements and capital and operating costs. Retention of the existing primary crushing facility, and installation of a new single stage SAG mill located within the existing mill building, was selected as the design for the expansion.An extended ramp-up schedule for the overall concentrator upgrade turned out to be necessary as the comminution and flotation circuits were completed prior to several downstream unit processes (concentrate filtration and tailings thickening), which were required to reach the design mill feed throughput rate on a sustainable basis. This resulted in the opportunity to gradually increase the SAG mill ball charge as necessary, to obtain the throughput corresponding to the various downstream processing constraints.A relatively fine cyclone overflow stream particle size distribution is a feature of the Chelopech comminution circuit that has not been fully overcome with increasing ball charge conditions. The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is the world's largest underground cavern for public use and was created primarily to facilitate the ice hockey tournaments for the 1994 winter Olympics in Norway. The cavern has a span of 61 m, is 91 m long and is 25 m high. Ordinarily, rock caverns have a span width of 15 to 25 m, however, temporary mining caverns of up to 60 m have been excavated and natural caves with even greater dimensions occur. The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is unique as it is for public use with a capacity for 5800 spectators. Blasting was conducted with a high production rate at normal costs due to detailed planning and strict supervision of each round. The initiation system and vibration monitors were the main tools to control vibration levels and to facilitate a high production rate. It was of utmost importance that the rock remaining in the roofs and walls was of high quality after blasting to avoid rock fall, rock slides and excessive maintenance work.

The environmental and economic impacts of a significant dependence on fossil fuels are affecting the future of sectors such as of mining. These impacts are prompting the Australian Government to seek solutions for reducing its dependence on fossil fuels more generally, such developing clean energy and improving energy efficiency. However, limited research has been undertaken to assess the potential synergies between clean energy and mining in an uncertain global future. This paper analyses current energy use by mining in Australia and reviews the drivers and opportunities for energy efficiency and cleaner energy technologies to be coupled to mining under three future scenarios. Linkages between mining and clean energy are investigated for three global scenarios for mining and metals to 2030, developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), namely Green Trade Alliance, Rebased Globalism and Resource Security. These scenarios are applied to assess how they could change the barriers, opportunities and trade-offs required for the development of a more sustainable energy sources by the minerals industry in Australia.

Liquidus surfaces in a part of the systems ZnO-PbO-Si02 and ZnO-"FeO"-SiO 2 were constructed by the quenching method. The ex- periments were carried out in air in the system ZnO-PbO-Si02. In the part investigated the primary phases were three ternary compounds (PbO.ZnOòSiO2, 2PbOòZnO.2SiO2 and barysilite), three lead silicates, Zn2SiO4 and SiO2. Iso- therms on the liquidus surface of each primary phase field were determined from 750 to 1300¦C. In the system ZnO-"FeO"-SiO 2 the experiments were carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. In the part investigated the primary phases were Fe2SiO4, Zn2SiO4 and Si02. Iso- therms on the liquidus surface of each primary phase field from 1150 to 1300¦C and the ternary eutectic (1130¦C, 15.9% ZnO, 48.2% "FeO" and 35.9% Si02) were determined.

An overview is given of two new developments in mine atmospheric monitoring. A new personal dust monitor (PDM) that gives real-time respirable dust readings is discussed. The unit is mounted within the minerÆs cap lamp battery and internally measures the true particle mass of dust collected on its filter. Samples are available for later mineralogical analysis and results do not exhibit the same sensitivity to water spray as optically-based measurement approaches. The technique achieves microgram-level mass resolution even in the hostile mine environment and reports dust loading data on a continuous basis. The monitor has been evaluated under an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) grant and is being adopted for statutory mine respirable dust determinations in the United States (US). The monitor has particular application for determining location of high dust sources. It can evaluate the efficiency of engineering means of suppression and other approaches to reducing dust levels. It has been recognised that the PDMÆs unique measurement approach has application to allow real-time atmospheric diesel particulate matter (DPM) monitoring. The industry has no real-time atmospheric DPM monitor at present. Recent surveys in New South Wales and Queensland show significant numbers of miners continue to face full shift DPM exposures in excess of internationally accepted levels. Real-time DPM monitoring will allow the industry to pinpoint high exposure zones where a number of trucks and other vehicles work in areas of poor ventilation. Knowledge of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of work practices to reduce underground minersÆ exposure. Approaches to uses of the DPM form of the monitor and the design of tag boards are discussed. Some outcomes from mine tests with both these new instruments are given.

Coal losses and dilution are among a coal mine operators everyday problems. These losses and unwelcome additions are generated primar- ily by the stripping operation and secondly by the coal mining opera- tion. Losses in yield due to preparation plant efficiency are a separate issue although they may be related to the coal mining operation. The losses and dilution can be traced to the following operations: (A) Overburden or Interburden Removal (1) Removal of coal edge by blasting operations. (2) Removal of top of seam by drilling/blasting. (3) Removal of top of seam by stripping equipment. (4) Removal of coal edges by stripping equipment. (5) Dilution due to stripping equipment. (B) Coal Mining (for the case where seams are ripped rather than shot) (1) Coal rib losses. (2) Coal rib dilution. (3) Coal left in floor. (4) Coal left in fault areas. (5) Floor material picked up whilst loading. (6) Spoil material picked up. (7) Spoil material from poor surface clean up. (8) Top of coal losses from final clean up. (9) Dilution from ripping too deep, i.e. into floor below seam. (10) Dilution from interseam parting. The losses apply to both the single seam and multi seam oper- ations although they are more pronounced in the multi seam mines than in a single seam mine due to the position of the coal which is lost. For example in the multi seam case the top seam coal edge loss is final. There is little chance of recovery with the subsequent pass even if the extra rehandle is done. However conversely the lower seam is relatively easy to locate as it has nowhere to go being contained by the lowwall bench.

A case study is presented that details the safety journey at a North American project involving two major contracts: a 1000 m shaft recovery and rehabilitation, and the development of a drainage gallery in a large open pit operation. In the early stages of the contracts, there were a number of incidents that created tension between the owner and contractor, which resulted in the contractor being placed on a final warning with almost imminent potential termination. As a result of this, it was agreed to initiate a focused safety recovery plan as a ‘last chance’.Over a period of two years, the engagement and consequent performance of the contractor was turned around, steadily working to set it up for success such that in one of the contract work areas, a record of ‘one year LTI (lost time injury) free’ was achieved. The journey involved the owner and the contractor teams working cohesively to educate all parties in the safety requirements and, most importantly, providing the context and understanding for certain requirements being put in place. Early on in the process, it was recognised that the owner team unknowingly was an impediment in that they did not fully understand the safety requirements and so was not able to lead the way for the contractor effectively. The journey to rectify the situation was supported and followed up by focused engagement with the project team, which generated a progressive improvement in a very challenging environment.In particular, the contractor turnaround was significant and of enough value for the contractor to ultimately export some of the safety systems from this site to other contract sites. Rock burst is common in deep underground excavations and is characterised by a violent ejection of block rocks from excavation walls. It is critical to understand the phenomenon of rock burst and particularly the failure mechanism. Laboratory experiments are one of the ways. For that purpose, a rock burst laboratory test system was developed at the State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering at the China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing. A true triaxial test system, designated the Deep Underground Rock Burst Analogue Test Machine, was developed, which can transfer a stress state from three-direction-compression on six surfaces to the compression on five surfaces with one set free. The rock burst experimental system comprises an acquisition of acoustic emission signals, a high-speed recording in order to accurately record the kinetic characteristics of rock fragments ejected during a rock burst event and the possibility of infrared thermography showing the surface temperature of the samples. In this paper, analyses of typical results from rock burst tests are presented with a description of the obtained results. The mechanisms of rock burst are illustrated, and a rock burst classification is proposed based on these laboratory tests. For the control of rock burst, the constant resistance, large deformation (CRLD) bolt or anchor is presented for accommodating the large displacement of surrounding rock masses and absorbing the impact of the sudden release of rock burst while outputting a constant resistant force in response to the external load. The CRLD bolt or anchor has had practical applications in underground mines. Finally, in situ tests performed in a tunnel at Qingshui coalmine, China, are analysed in detail.CITATION:He, M and Sousa, L R, 2014. The behaviour and deportment of indium during the precipitation of sodium jarosite from Fe2(S04)3 - Na2SO4 solutions were investigated. Indium is readily precipitated with sodium jarosite, and the extent of In precipitation increases as the In concentration of the solution increases. It was shown that In 3+ substitutes for Fe 3+ in the jarosite structure to form a nearly ideal solid solution series. On a molar basis, the precipitation of Fe is slightly favoured over that of In, and the difference is reduced as the pH increases. Sodium jarosite precipitation becomes kinetically rapid at temperatures >70¦C, but increasing temperatures in the range 70 to 150¦C affect neither the relative precipitation of In and Fe nor the composition of the jarosite product. Low Na2SO4 concentrations result in reduced product yields and jarosite precipitates in which H3O' > Na+. The hydronium-rich precipitates have reduced In contents. Increasing the ZnSO4 concentration of the solution slightly increases the quantity of jarosite formed and results in the incorporation of -0.3 per cent Zn in the jarosite structure. Otherwise, the presence of ZnSO4 has no significant effect on the composition of the jarosite. Seeding accelerates the rate of jarosite precipitation but has a negligible influence on the deportment of In. The jarosite precipitation reaction at 98¦C is relatively rapid and near-steady state conditions are achieved in - 6 h even in the absence of seed. The initially precipitated jarosite is slightly enriched in In with respect to Fe. The ferric ion concentration of the solution has a significant influence on both the amount of jarosite formed and its composition. In particular, the jarosites precipitated from dilute Fe3+ media have significantly enhanced In contents. Hence, it may be possible to recover - 25 per cent of the dissolved In, at the 1000 mg/L level, in a jarosite precipitate assaying - ten per cent In by the controlled oxidation-precipitation of sodium jarosite from a ferrous sulphate processing solution.

The coal left in the goaf is easily submerged by groundwater damage. During the mining process of the underlying coal seam, it is necessary to drain the water in the overlying goaf. The coal sample is prone to spontaneous combustion after being soaked in water and air-dried. To explore the effect of micro-functional group transformation of water-immersed coal samples on the spontaneous combustion characteristics of coal samples during the low-temperature oxidation process. Using the experimental method of infrared spectroscopy, the migration law of special functional groups under different oxygen concentrations of water-soaked coal samples was analysed. By means of thermal analysis, the endothermic and exothermic properties of the functional groups in the water-soaked coal samples were studied. The results show that: the higher the oxygen concentration, the more oxygen-containing functional groups in the water-soaked coal sample, compared with the 18 per cent oxygen concentration, the 14 per cent oxygen concentration has a small increase, and the chain length is shortened. The temperature increase together with the oxygen concentration content determines the functional group content, the pyrolysis process produces some functional groups. The lower the oxygen concentration, endothermic rate decreases and endothermic temperature increases, the higher the ignition temperature of coal oxy-combustion, the lower the total heat release, the higher the burnout temperature, and the faster the oxygen-absorbing weight gain and the conversion of functional groups. Below 14 per cent oxygen concentration, the oxidative combustion process will be greatly reduced. The results provide a theoretical basis for preventing long-term water-soaked coal body oxidative spontaneous combustion in shallow buried coal seams.

The design of mine ventilation systems for the BHP Steel Division Collieries is based on the acquisition of ventilation survey data for the establishment of a realistic computer net- work model. The branches which form the net- work for the computer models are calculated from a range of resistance factors incorporat- ing both a frictional and shock loss component. Since shock losses can account for up to 30 per cent of the total energy losses in mine airways the use of friction factors alone without accounting for shock losses will result in the choosing of an insufficiently performing fan. Published tables of friction factors have in- variably been taken from metalliferous or single entry studies and consequently are not reliable for Australia's mining conditions where multiple entries with regularly spaced cut-throughs are the normal practice. Typical resistance factors for roadways of rectangular cross-section 5.5 m x 2.0 m, with coal sides, have been found to vary from 0.11 Ns2/m8/km where no timber supports are used, to 0.98 Ns2/m8/km where double centre legging together with wooden chocks is used. In addition to the range of resistance factors due to varying support methods, the nature of use for a roadway is very significant because of the condition of repair and upkeep maintained.

Effective selective mining relies heavily on high quality geological data and assay data. Such assay data is dependent on effective sampling protocols, sample preparation techniques, assaying practices and well founded quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures. This paper describes recent developments in grade control sampling at PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals high-grade Kencana gold mine at Gosowong Indonesia and presents a case study in identifying, minimising and monitoring random and systematic sampling error including the use of duplicate sampling and the Thompson Howarth technique for quantifying random sampling error.

The ASC has a dual role of business facilitator and law enforcer. Only certain types of expert report are of interest to the ASC. The powers of the old Companies Code and the Corporations law are compared. NCSC Policy Release 149 was dependent on the prescriptive powers given to the NCSC in the Companies Code. The Corporations Law does not give the ASC power to prescribe the contents of expert reports. The requirement now is for all necessary information. Research evidence is that some investors want simpler prospectuses while others need more detail. The ASC's examination of expert reports is after registration of primary documents. This leads to a necessity for experts to maintain adequate records.

The Permian-Triassic Bowen Basin and the Jurassic-Cretaceous Surat Basin evolved in a backarc tectonic setting behind an active convergent plate margin in eastern Gondwana. Several extensional (Early Permian; Eocene) and contractional (mid- Permian; Early Triassic; Middle-Late Triassic; early Late Cretaceous) intraplate deformational events are recognised in the basins. These can be correlated with similar events in the New England Orogen that was being deformed in the Late Permian- Late Triassic as a foreland thrust belt. The intraplate deformations were probably the consequence of plate interactions, including the accretion of terranes, at the ancient active plate margin, remnants of which now occur in New Zealand.

The Quiruvilca district, located 80 km east of Trujillo in north central Peru (Fig. 1), has produced over eight million tons of Cu-Pb- Zn-Ag ore from approximately 60 veins since 1789. "Quiruvilca means "sacred tooth" in Quechua, the lingua franca of the Incas. The expression refers to a prominent volcanic neck exposed several kilometers northeast of the district. The district covers an area of approx- imately 24 km2. The mines occupy the eastern quarter; workings underlie 6.7 km2 with a developed vertical range of 280 m. All pres- ently operating workings are owned by Corpora- cion Minera Nor Peru S.A., a subsidiary of ASARCO Incorporated. The oldest rocks in the area are Lower Cretaceous clastic sedimentary rocks exposed 7 km to the east. Lithologies include sand- stone, siltstone, shale, coal seams, and carbonates (Cossio, 1964). These rocks were folded and affected by regional low-grade metamorphism during the early Tertiary, 40-65 m.y. (Hollister, 1977).

The activiltion of sphalerite with electrolytically generated copper ions from a copper electrode instead of the usual practice of the addition of copper sulphate was studied in the laboratory. A large surface area of copper was provided by lining three sides of a bench flotation cell with copper sheeting. The lining was connected to the positive terminal of a low voltage d.c. source, and the cell impeller to the negative terminal.Sphalerite was effectively activated by this arrangement and was subsequently floated using xanthate as the collector.Flotation results comparable to those obtained with 1 lb/ton CuS04.5H20 (0,255 lb/ton copper) were obtained using 0·1062 lb/ton of electrolytic copper and 0·488 kWh of electrical energy. The wastage of copper due to the formation of insoluble precipitates was found to be dependent on the length of time the current was passed. Maximum current was passed for the shortest time to minimize wastage.

Mine and ore beneficiation wastes and smelter contaminated soils often cause phytotoxicity and threaten adverse environmental effects if not remediated. Science has clarified both the risks from soil metals and methods to alleviate those risks that can be applied at low cost. Phytoremediation is a family of plant and agronomy based technologies to deal with environmental aspects of sites requiring remediation. If valid risk assessment indicates that metals comprise risk, phytostabilisation may be used to alleviate that risk for most contaminated sites. In particular, Zn-Pb, Cu and Ni mine and smelter sites are readily remediated by making the soil calcareous and fertile, with added organic and metal sorbent amendments that include soil microbes to ‘revitalise’ the soil. In each case, the soil fertility and causes of phytotoxicity should be clarified by agricultural soil extractions, and the combination of amendments required to improve fertility and reverse phytotoxicity identified and found locally. In contrast with phytostabilisation, phytoextraction/phytomining uses rare metal hyperaccumulator plants and agronomic management to maximise annual phytoextraction of soil elements into plant shoots for harvest, ashing and use as a metal ore. Plants that accumulate more than two per cent Ni in shoots, and yield 10–20 t ha-1 dry biomass yield 200–400 kg Ni ha-1, which has value greater than all common agricultural crops. Considering the value of elements, existence of hyperaccumulator plants and demonstrated agronomic management for Ni phytomining, it is clear that mine sites and Ni mineralised subore-grade serpentine soils can be phytomined economically as an agricultural mining technology. A team developed agronomic methods and improved cultivars of Alyssum, which can be profitably grown on temperate zone Ni mineralised or contaminated soils. Plant species for tropical ultramafic soil materials have been identified. Mine to Mill (MTM) optimisation, a total systems approach to the reduction of energy and cost in mining and mineral processing operations, is well-established technology. However, successful applications of MTM optimisation have been largely confined to gold, copper and lead/zinc semi autogenous grinding (SAG) operations, where the goals of tweaking the blast design to increase fines and hence throughput through the mill have been relatively easy to meet. The application of MTM optimisation in a more demanding environment, like that of a multi-stage crushing and screening aggregate operation, was conceived as part of a Department of Energy (DOE) initiative in 2004, aiming to reduce the energy consumption in the US aggregates industry. Two quarries operated by the Luck Stone Corporation of Richmond, Virginia, were selected for the demonstration sites. Dealing with ore variability and a requirement to maintain a fixed feed size distribution to the tertiary plant, whilst still aiming to increase yields of saleable products, presented some unique challenges. Despite these variables, the implementation of the MTM approach at Luck StoneÆs aggregate plant in Pittsboro, North Carolina, has led to a tangible improvement in productivity, particularly in the primary and secondary plants. The successful outcome was dependent upon several key factors, including reliable blasting and processing models, careful analysis of the rock conditions and plant configuration, understanding and buy-in from the Luck Stone operations staff, excellent collaboration with Virginia Tech staff and students, and long-term monitoring made possible through comprehensive PLC logging. This paper presents a review of the work conducted at the Pittsboro quarry and highlights the key reasons behind the successful implementation of the MTM approach in a complex plant environment.
