This paper describes four new families of collector products which are currently being introduced at the industrial level. A brief summary of the chemical basis behind each product family will be given. This is then followed by a selection of flotation examples which illustrate the more important use characteristics that have been observed to date. It is becoming more apparent with further testing that these four new product families can offer both technical and economic advantages to the industrial flotation process operator.

Semi-bulk concentrates of 45% zinc at 80% recovery have been produced from the McArthur River mineral deposit. Selective leaching of these concentrates to recover lead and a commercial grade zinc concentrate has the potential to increase significantly the recovery of zinc (as zinc concentrate) and lead (as lead metal) over conventional flotation methods producing lead and zinc concentrates.

In situ synchrotron X-ray and in situ neutron diffraction-based experimentation have been implemented to characterise the formation of the complex calcium ferrite iron ore sinter bonding phases silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I. Experiments were carried out using fine-grained (<20 ¦m) sinter mixtures containing ~77 wt per cent Fe2O3, 14 wt per cent CaO, 3.5 wt per cent SiO2 and 5 wt per cent Al2O3, with diffraction data collected during heating until 1300 - 1350¦C, which was enough to ensure complete melting of the SFCA phases. In the case of the in situ synchrotron experimentation, results showed that altering the nature of the starting sinter mixture (ie substitution of goethite for hematite; substitution of an amorphous Al2O3-based mineral for gibbsite) did not have a significant effect on the thermal stability range of the SFCA phases. It did, however, have a profound effect on the formation and rate of consumption of the calcium-rich ferrite phases C2F and CF, and on the formation mechanisms of SFCA and SFCA-I. The in situ neutron diffraction experimentation is the first described in the context of iron ore sintering, and the observation of both SFCA-I and SFCA formation in the in situ diffraction data represents the first step in achieving the goal of charactering iron ore sinter phase formation in large volumes of industrial sinter starting materials with a wide range of particle sizes (up to 6.3 mm).CITATION:Webster, N A S, Pownceby, M I, Madsen, I C, Studer, A J, Lu, L, Manuel, J R, Kimpton, J A and Fisher-White, M J, 2013. The Coronation Hill gold-platinum-palladium prospect is located in the valley of the South Alligator River (latitude 13'35'S, longitude 132'36'E), about 80 kilometres east of Pine Creek in the Northern Territory. Coronation Hill was one of thirteen sites in the South Alligator Valley at which uranium was mined between 1955 and 1964 after initial discovery by the Bureau of Mineral Resources in 1953. Most of the mines were operated by United Uranium No Liability. The Sleisbeck mine 25 kilometres south of Coronation Hill was operated by North Australian Uranium Corporation and the group of mines at Rockhole about 20 kilometres to the north-west of Coronation Hill was operated by South Alligator Uranium No Liability. The uranium mine at Coronation Hill produced about 26000 tonnes of ore averaging 2.6 kg/t U308 with an estimated average gold grade of 10.4 g/ gold. Gold was commonly associated with the uranium mineralisation and was recovered at the gravity treatment plant at El Sherana. Gold was also recovered in 1986 by Pacific Gold Mines Limited by treating the tailings from the Moline and Rockhole uranium leach plants at a CIP plant at Moline. With the completion of uranium contracts in 1964 mining in the South Alligator Valley ceased. Exploration for uranium continued in the area during the 1960s and 1970s with no success. The Coronation Hill Joint Venture (BHP Gold Mines Limited 45 per cent, Pioneer Minerals (Gold) Pry Ltd 45 per cent, Notgold Limited 10 per cent)carried out the first exploration specifically targetted at gold in 1984 with the drilling of five vertical drill holes which indicated high potential for a substantial gold resource at Coronation Hill with no associated uranium. The Joint Venture has sub- sequently drilled about 25000 metres of diamond drill holes at Coronation Hill alone. Analytical results from 1985 drilling established that platinum and palladium were associated with gold. An indicated resource of 3.49Mt at 5.12g/t Au, 0.21g/t Pt and 0.56g/t Pd has been calculated using a lg/t Au cut off.

In April 2006, Orica Quarry Services undertook an investigation to determine the likely vibration and frequency response of three water storage tanks to quarry blasting, immediately adjacent to the tanks. Of the three tanks that were studied, two are relatively tall with a æwineglassÆ shape; one is constructed of steel (4 ML storage capacity) while the other is constructed of concrete (2 ML storage capacity). The third is a ground-embedded concrete tank that is relatively squat and broad in shape (38 ML storage capacity). A vibration limit of 25 mm/s and an acceleration limit of 0.16 g were imposed on the tanks. However, this report shows that this acceleration limit, whilst having relevance to low frequency earthquake motions, is quite inappropriate for the high frequency blast vibrations that are typical in a quarry blasting environment. The investigation involved firing 11 single blastholes of known charge weights and distances from the tanks, and measuring the tank vibration response using blast monitors placed on and around each tank. Analysis of the data collected from the cement tanks showed resonant responses over a broad range of frequencies, with dominant and lesser responses in vertical and lateral motion recorded at 9.8 Hz, 12 Hz, 16.8 Hz, 17 Hz, 31.3 Hz and 38.1 Hz. Unfortunately, most of the data collected on the steel tank was corrupted by noise due to electrical sources and/or mechanical sources such as the water agitator inside the tank. Advanced Monte Carlo vibration models were then constructed using the single blasthole information. Knowing the resonant frequencies enabled the modelling of electronic delay sequences for the reduction of resonant vibrations. Ultimately programmable and accurate electronic delay detonators were deemed essential to allow blasting in relatively close proximity to the tanks while avoiding resonant frequencies. Three blast designs were modelled, ranging in maximum instantaneous charge (MIC) from 4 kg to 22 kg, and 60 holes to 160 holes. The modelling showed that two of the designs (using small charge weights) could be used no closer than 71 m from the storage tanks. This is based on a 90 per cent confidence level of achieving vibration levels within the 0.16 g acceleration limit, even though the velocity levels predicted to be generated at this distance were significantly less than the 25 mm/s limit. The third design incorporated larger charge weights and could be used for blasting at distances no closer than 220 m from the tanks. The present work, conducted in an operating quarry, demonstrates the usefulness of Monte Carlo waveform superposition techniques for the control and reduction of ground vibration (either velocity or acceleration) under restrictive environmental constraints. However, a discussion is also presented to demonstrate that it is somewhat restrictive to impose an acceleration limit based on the motion produced by low frequency earthquakes rather than the motion produced by high frequency blast vibrations.

The results of laboratory grindability tests on coal are of primary importance to the designers and operators of coal grinding mills, and coal handling plants in general. However, the potential industrial application of these test results have not been fully realised due to a lack of laboratory-test/field data correlations. This paper focuses on the grindability characteristics of Queensland coals, and provides a new look at an old problem in terms of (i) a more rigorous characterisation of the grindability properties of coal and its associated mineral impurities, and (ii) the correlation of laboratory grindability test results with the size characteristics of run-of-plant thermal coals, and their pulverising characteristics in full-scale mills. A new grindability test is also proposed based on the Yancey, Geer and Price laboratory abrasion-test mill.

A form of wet pelletization is described where the bridging of the individual particles is achieved by a second liquid phase that pref- erentially wets the suspended solid particles. The phenomenon can be used to obtain efficient separation of solids from carrier liquids, to form spheres from finely divided solid materials, and to separate selected constituents from a body of mixed solids. Typical examples of each of these applications are presented.

Study on Preparation and Gel Performance of High Purity Montmorillonite In order to research the colloidal and thixotropic performance of the inorganic gel prepared by high purity montmorillonite, this study uses the moderate grade bentonite ores from Weifang (China) as raw material. Two-stage hydrocyclone classification was applied to obtain the high purity montmorillonite with its content of 94.8 per cent. In contrast to other methods of montmorillonite purification, two-stage purification by hydroclone has the advantages of larger throughput and easily achieving auto-control in industry, and purified products with different montmorillonite content can be obtained by this method. And then the inorganic gel was prepared by the prepared high purity montmorillonite and its colloidal and thixotropic performances by measuring the flowability and thixotropy were further studies. Research results show that the inorganic gel has plastic body liquidity, the viscosity decreases with the increase of the shear rate, the static and dynamic shearing stress values are 33.98 Pa and 91.89 Pa, respectively, and the thixotropic value is 95.2 dyne+s/cm2, which indicates that it has preferable colloidal and thixotropic performance. Montmorillonite inorganic gel prepared by bentonite with high montmorillonite content and low-layer charge has better gel performance.

The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance often deviates from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral resource and reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.The key concept of real-time mining promotes a change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online data acquired during extraction at the mining face, material handling and processing with a sequentially updatable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimisation of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control.The proposed framework integrates the following building blocks in a holistic manner: automated sensor-based material characterisationonline machine performance measurementsunderground navigation and positioningunderground mining system simulation and optimisation of planning decisionsupdating techniques for resource/reserve models.This paper introduces the real-time mining concept and the building blocks and provides a review of the state-of-the-art. Technological readiness of necessary building blocks is assessed, and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. "Characterisation of sulfide minerals (eg pyrite, sphalerite) in historic tailings can assist in determining whether there are economic benefits of reprocessing such materials using modern metallurgical practices. In addition, there are associated environmental advantages if the historic tailings are actively generating acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). At the Old Tailings Dam (OTD), Savage River, Western Tasmania, 38 Mt of pyritic tailings were deposited from 1967 to 1982; consequently it has been recognised as an AMD source. Long-term management options considered for this site have included the establishment of either a water, hard-engineered or vegetation cover. However, due to geotechnical challenges posed and the lack of success demonstrated by previous pilot studies, these strategies have not been implemented. Instead, resolving the pyrite chemistry can allow for a first-pass assessment of whether reprocessing these tailings is a feasible option as part of a long-term management strategy for this legacy site.Tailings samples (n = 144) were collected across the OTD from up to 2 m depth from five facies (A–E), and four zones (1 to 4; defined by hydrological regime and grain size). These materials were subjected to acid-base accounting (ABA) and mineralogical evaluations to determine their geoenvironmental characteristics. Following this, 26 samples were selected for in-depth laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) investigations to evaluate pyrite chemistry across different tailings facies. The results revealed enrichment of Co and Ni in these materials. Specifically, Co content was up to 3.0 wt per cent, particularly within facies C to E, and Zones 3 and 4. Cobalt is recognised as a critical metal, therefore, reprocessing should be considered as a future rehabilitation option for the OTD, pending resource definition using established codes and practices.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A, Fox, N and Jackson, L, 2016. Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd since October, 1960. Since the introduction, the.: number of thickeners in use in the continu-ous thickening stage has been reduced from eight to three; there has been an increase of 25% in throughput and a reduc-tion of solids in.:thickener overflow from 3-4 gòpòl . solids to 0.5 g.p.l. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0.25. lb SEPARAN, NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3% in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of SEPARAN NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution prior to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strip-pings from 47 to 71 hours. However, there has been a slight increase the lead content of the cadmium-metal produced.

The exploration of Mount Isa Mines' new copper source will require the development of a five kilometre 4.7 x 5.5 metre blind decline commencing 1000m below the surface and extending to 1600m below the surface. With virgin rock temperatures approaching 60¦C, the ventilation strategy represents a complete departure from any previously used at this mine, in that refrigeration becomes essential. The use of direct water to air cooling techniques has become commonplace in mines throughout the world and their application is being adopted at Mount Isa Mines. A heat load simulation routine has been implemented to allow for the design of refrigeration requirements, as well as to aid in the selection of diesel or electric equipment. This enabled planners to determine the size of a surface based refrigeration plant. Future refrigeration demand for expansion into the ore production stage has also been investigated.

A lead-zinc flotation tailings sample containing silver from BHP Billiton’s Cannington Mine has been characterised to understand occurrences of silver in the tailings by conventional elemental, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and size analyses followed by mineralogical analysis with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with mineral liberation analysis (MLA) software and the use of an adapted diagnostic leach process originally developed for gold containing materials.The tailings sample contained 67 g/t Ag, 1.8 per cent Pb and 0.52 per cent Zn. The XRD analysis showed that the sample consisted of 74 per cent silicates, nine per cent sulfides, 11 per cent magnetite and small amounts of other minerals such as fluorite, fluorapatite and rutile. The p80 and p50 of the sample were determined to be 106 µm and 38 µm, respectively. The silver distribution was high in the small size fraction with 52.1 per cent of the silver being in the -8 µm fraction. The silver minerals freibergite, acanthite, jamesonite, pyrargyrite and native silver were observed in the mineralogical analysis of the sample by SEM/MLA. The associations of the minerals were intricate and the occurrences of silver were complex. There were finely disseminated silver minerals and also coarser grains of silver minerals in composites with the host minerals. It was estimated that almost 50 per cent of the silver was contained in pyrargyrite, around 14 per cent as native silver and contained in acanthite, 12.5 per cent in galena and around ten per cent in freibergite and jamesonite.These composite particles and the type of the silver minerals present were expected to limit leaching efficiencies of the silver in hydrometallurgical processing. The diagnostic leach tests showed that around 50 per cent of the silver could be recovered by direct cyanidation and higher extractions could be achieved by more aggressive acidic systems.Cyanidation tests were conducted to confirm the findings of the diagnostic leach studies. The investigated cyanidation parameters were time (up to 48 hours), solid to liquid ratio (1:1 and 1:2), cyanide concentration (0.025 M, 0.5 M and 0.1 M) and particle size (p80 of 106 µm, 63 µm and 7.5 µm). The effects of oxygen and lead nitrate were also studied. The tests were conducted at atmospheric temperatures. The maximum silver recovery obtained was about 50 per cent for all the parameter ranges trialled except particle size. The decrease in particle size from 106 µm to 7.5 µm by fine grinding resulted in an increase in silver recoveries from 50 per cent up to approximately 82 per cent indicating that the liberation of the silver grains/minerals is one of the factors affecting the cyanidation recovery of silver in addition to the presence of refractory silver minerals not amenable to cyanidation.Low head grades of silver in the tailings and relatively low cyanidation recoveries of silver (without fine grinding) necessitate a thorough cost analysis for the cyanidation of the Cannington lead and zinc tailings to assess if cyanidation would be a suitable process option for the extraction of silver. At the East Sullivan site, wood wastes covering the abandoned mine tailings impoundment prevent sulfide oxidation by creating an anoxic environment. The addition of coarse ligneous wastes and their high permeability favour infiltration, resulting in a water table rise that maintains most tailings under water saturation and thus provides an additional protection against sulfide oxidation. Moreover, high infiltration allows a more rapid flushing of acid prone groundwater generated prior to the cover placement, which could cause acid mine drainage over a long period of time. Finally, the pore-waters under the cover are characterised by a strong reducing potential, high alkalinity, and near neutral pHs. These conditions favour sulfate reduction and base metal precipitation as sulfides and as carbonates. Pore-water composition monitored from 1992 to 1998 showed a significant Fe2+ decrease, following cover placement. Thereafter, the restoration strategy capitalised on the alkaline and reductive properties of the waters underlying the wood-waste cover. An original treatment of acid effluents, based on the recirculation of water discharging around the impoundment through the organic cover, was implemented. In 2002, the recirculated water from May to October had a mean pumping rate of 240 m3/h, for a total volume of 800 000 m3. Data gathered near the dispersal zone from 2000 to 2002 show that despite the recirculation of acid water (pH ÿ3), the pH decreases by only one unit from 7 to 6, during the recirculation period, ie from May to November. However, alkalinity decreases from 800 to 100 mg/L-CaCO3. Despite this decrease, the alkalinity is back up to 800 mg/L-CaCO3 the following May, thanks to sulfate reduction. From 2000 to 2002, Fe2+ concentration in the pore waters near the dispersal zone is maintained below 2 mg/L. Evolution of surface water quality suggests that the contaminated groundwater flush is completed in the north and north-west area of the impoundment; the east sector is under recovery, while the south sector remains the most problematic. A wood-waste cover, besides limiting sulfide oxidation, can fill the role of alkaline reducing barrier for the treatment of these acidogenic waters, until a balance between acidity and alkalinity in the effluent is reached.

This paper aims to provide the reader with an insight into the field of computer graphics and Virtual Reality (VR), and show how both have been applied to the general area of Free Steered Vehicle (FSV) operations underground. It first explains this developing computer technology and explains its advantages over existing CAD based solutions. This paper deals with the graphical applications and implications of building models within a computer's memory. It then continues to describe the problems with Free Steered Vehicle operations. The work already carried out in the field of VR is explained, and the production of a VR system addressing the problems with fitting cameras to aid the driver's field of view is detailed. Another possible use of VR is also explained - the concept of risk regions, demonstrating its uses in the examination of proposed operational methods. Examples of possible uses are given, and its potential advantages over existing methods discussed. A case study of a computer-generated video involved with the safety of operations of FSVs is also presented. This addresses the precautions that pedestrians should take to ensure safe working in areas where FSVs are operating. This paper then concludes with possible further applications for computer graphics and VR, and the on-going research into these two technologies.

Particulate chalcopyrite samples (78 ~ 98 mole per cent chalcopyrite, screen size fraction from 710 to 250 µm) were prepared by crushing and sieving lump ore samples from 12 locations in the Mt Isa Mine. Measurements of thennoelectric power (which does not involve the passage of a current) were made using a packed bed that was compressed by loading with a weight and placed in a temperature gradienL Details of the apparatus are described.The effect of particle size was investigated by preparing 12 fractions, with mean particle sizes ranging from 605 to 2.2 µm, from one of the ore samples. Values of thennoelectric power decreased with both increasing particle size and loading pressure; however it remained fairly constant for particle sizes above 80 µm, when loading pressure exceeded 3.3 MPa.Measurements of the chalcopyrite samples gave an average value of -260 JlV/K (-248 ~ -268 µV/K) for nine samples and about -290 µV/K for three samples, showing that these samples were all n-type semi-eonductors.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the main points in the construction of the various types of wire ropes more commonly used for winding in Australia; and the maintenance of the ropes, and cage and skip safety gear as practised at the South mine, Broken Hill.It should be mentioned that both of the shafts at present in use are dry, and both downcast with or without the assistance of the two exhaust fans normally in use: Night shift and week.-end overtime are practicaly non-existent.Thus, during night shift, the cages in No. 7 shaft are landed on the chairs at the surface, providing efficient covers for the· shaft, and allowing the maximum amount of rope to be wound on to the drums. This also applies to the cages of both No. 7 and No. 4 shafts during the week-ends.These factors, combined with electric winding and skip haulage, are calculated to obtain the best use of the ropes when properly attended.WINDING ROPES-TYPE AND CONSTRUCTIONThese ropes may be divided into four main types which will include the more commonly used constructions(a) One-size strand.(b) Warrington strand.(c) Flattened strand.(d) Locked coil.1. On Sunday morning 7th November, 1976, at approximately 2-25 a.m., smoke was discovered issuing from the 1912 m long belt drift at Appin Colliery. A Clouth steel cord rubber belt approximately 940 mm in width had been installed in the drift in 1963 on the basis that no fire resistant steel cord belt was then available to operate on a single lift at the load and on the 160 gradient of the drift. Investigation showed that the belt drift was on fire and the usually downcasting drift was upcasting. Immediate fire fighting and rescue operations were instituted and the drift was sealed off. High expansion foam was pushed into the drift from the surface and the fire was brought under control. Recovery work resulted in the fire being put out and the drift open for walking traffic by, S-P0 am., on Wednesday 10th November, 1976. lie experience gained during the fire fighting and recovery operations led to recommendations in regard to future use of high expansion foam.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed.
