"This paper presents the second part of a study of the assessment of rock stress inputs on the performance of various new mining designs at the Ok Tedi large open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. Over the years, four programs of rock stress measurement have been completed at Ok Tedi, each providing different interpretations of the in situ field stresses. Details of three of these programs and interpretations are provided in the precursor to this paper, entitled ‘Rock Stresses at Ok Tedi, Papua New Guinea’ (Lee et al, 2014).This paper explains how the various stress interpretations were utilised in the modelling of the proposed new open pit and underground mining excavations, comparing where possible their expected effects on stability. The modelled performance of three specific mine components have been discussed here as case studies, including: the below-pit drainage tunnel, as the floor of the open pit workings is mined down from 350?m above, to within just 75?m above the crown of the tunnel the stability of the 1000?m high slope of the proposed West Wall cutback the proposed sublevel open stoping extraction sequence in the Gold Coast orebody beneath the East Wall, for which only the likely ‘worst-case’ stress regime was used to assess sequencing and stability issues.The benefits of scheduling the collection of detailed rock stress measurements and other input data from a range of different sources at various stages of the projects are discussed.Alternative in situ stress models have less stability impact on open pit slopes than on underground mine excavations.CITATION:de Bruyn, I A, Baczynski, N R P, Lee, M F, Mills, K W, Mylvaganam, J, and Prado, D A, 2014. In 1556, Agricola noted that "a prudent owner, before he buys shares, ought to go to the mine and carefully examine the nature of the vein, for it is very important that he should be on his guard lest fraudulent sellers of shares should deceive him"(1). In today's world, the owner rarely has the opportunity to visit the mine and, instead of reading about the `nature of the vein' in annual reports, prospectuses, government publications, et cetera he sees the words `reserves' and `resources'. Unfortunately, the subject of reserves and resources has become increasingly complex and Canadians, along with their counterparts in Australia and elsewhere, are still struggling with definitions which will attempt to cover all conceivable circumstances from national or regional resource endowment to the material to be extracted next week from a given stope or open pit bench. The providers and recipients of reserve and resource data are: - Government agencies who are concerned with questions of national endowment, strategic use of raw materials and other questions of public policy. - Stockholders who have a vested interest in the basic assets of their companies. - Financiers who are concerned about the security of their loans. - Regulatory bodies whose function is to protect a frequently naive investor from unscrupulous practices. - Management, at head office and on-site, who need basic information for decision-making, whether it be to open up a new mine, expand or close an existing operation, acquire or merge with other entities, or, more mundanely, for routine mine planning. To satisfy their demands with unanimously accepted definitions is a formidable task but, it is my impression that, little by little, a concensus appears to be growing within the industry.

The mIning operations of Bougainville Copper Pty. Limited are located at Panguna on the Island of Bougainville which is part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea.C.R.A. Exploration Pty. Limited first established mineralization in the Panguna area in 1964. Exploration work since then has established ore reserves estimated to be 900,000,000 long tons of ore assaying 0·48 per cent copper and 0·36 dwt/ton gold. An economic feasibility study completed in July, 1969 enabled a decision to be made to proceed with a major mining operation. The ore will be mined by open cut methods and will be treated in a conventional concentrator with a nominal capacity of 90,000 short tons/day. The concentrate will be pnmped as a slurry through a 16 mile long pipeline to a port established on the east coast where it will be filtered and dried ready for export. Other supporting facilities for the mine include two towns, a 135 MW steam power station, and access roads.

The throughput of a HP-roller mill is determined by the acceleration of the feed material within acceleration zone and introduction into the compression zone. Both processes depend on the internal friction and the friction of the material on the roller surface which is influenced by the surface structure and adhering of material. The particle motion in the acceleration zone has been investigated with high speed videos showing the effect of the centrifugal force and the slip on the roller surface. The throughput is discussed in the term of the specific throughput which can be approximated by a linear function characterised by the throughput number and the throughput elasticity. The throughput number is a helpful measure for investigating the influence of the feed material and the surface structure. The experimental results give some guidance for chosing an optimum corrugation profile.

The Mobile Miner MM130 was delivered to Broken Hill in February 1992. During March the machine was extensively trialled on the surface to test manoeuvrability, climbing ability and muck handling prior to being trammed underground in April. The first cutting test on 30 April 1992 provided promising results. The machine has undergone continual development since it arrived in Broken Hill with aims of ensuring reliability and achieving performance goals. The paper gives a detailed account of recent performance comparing this with the predicted Performance.

Ventilation and the environmental climate in the Campiano mine is the subject of this re- search. The mine is located in Southern Tuscany (Central Italy), a region where geothermal gra- dients are very high (three times the average gradient of the earth). The research produced interesting indications as to the influence of surface climatic conditions on the environmental parameters inside the mine. A close correlation has been found between dry-bulb temperature and humidity ratio of the air in the mine for dif- ferent metereological conditions and for differ- ent mass flow rate values. Variations in air enthalpy, caused only by the heat exchange with the rock walls during the flowing of the air through the mine, depends on the surface temperature values. Statistical analyses have been used to ex- press air enthalpy variations on surface tempe- ratures, on the variations of the humidity ratio that the air undergoes inside the mine and on the mass flora rate. The application in practice of the results will permit the identification of correct mea- sures to be adopted so that optimal microcli- matic conditions are produced in the mine.

About 20 percent of world gold production has been contributed by gold deposits in Archaean greenstone belts, of which ca 2100 tonnes of gold has been produced from Archaean greenstone belts in Western Australia (Phillips, in press). These deposits are, therefore, important exploration targets and an under-standing of their nature and genesis can help to formulate exploration strategies and delineate potential targets.A literature survey of Archaean granitoid-greenstone terrains indicates that a wide variety of lithologies host gold deposits. The major part of production from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, has come from mafic volcanics andintrusives (70% of production),with significant contributions from BIF-hosted ores (15%) and low production from sediments, felsic volcanics, porphyry intrusives and granitoids (Groves et al., in press). Detrital iron deposits (‘DID’) in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia have been successfully mined and processed as small quantities of saleable standalone or blended lump and fine ore products over many decades. Despite their past, present, and potential future exploitation, they have received far less geological attention than the economically more significant higher grade bedded iron deposits (BID) or channel iron deposits (CID). DID are composed of Pliocene to Quaternary unconsolidated colluvial/alluvial hematite gravels with minor sand, silt, and ferruginous clay, as well as minor iron rich hematite clast conglomerates. DID mineralisation at Solomon has been subdivided into six distinct stratigraphic units, DID-5 (lowermost) to DID-0 (uppermost) based on differences in clast and matrix textures and mineralogy, degree of consolidation/lithification, particle size distribution and replacement textures. The most significant accumulations of DID-1 to DID-5 are in tributary valleys that have been cut through the Joffre Member of the Brockman Iron Formation on either side of the main Kings-Queens valley which contains the CID. DID-5 and DID-4 are ferruginous conglomerate, referred to as canga, with four subtypes recognised. DID-4 is composed of BID hematite clasts cemented by hematite or goethite. DID-5 is characterised by partial to complete replacement of BID hematite clasts and matrix by the yellow ochreous and brown to black vitreous forms of goethite. DID-3 to DID-0 are unconsolidated hematite detritals composed of largely (>80 weight per cent) fine to coarse gravel, minor sand and little silt or clay. The gravel clasts are largely composed of hematite and hydrohematite that replace BID, micro-nanoplaty hematite-martite-ochreous goethite (m-nplH-M-oG) BID, reworked canga, hematite pisoids, siliceous hematite BID (micro-nanoplaty hematite-martite-quartz, m-nplH-M-quartz), chert (~10–20 per cent) and minor (<5 per cent) Banded Iron Formation (BIF). Hematite abundance decreases from DID-3 to DID-0 whilst siliceous hematite BID is highest in abundance in DID-0 and lowest in DID-3. A key finding of the study is that >90 per cent of mineralised detrital clasts are derived from hypogene altered BID micro-nanoplaty hematite-martite with subsequent later supergene ochreous goethite mineralisation hosted by the Joffre Member. The DID genesis model entails interpreted Palaeoproterozoic siliceous hematite hypogene microplaty BID mineralisation of the Joffre Member undergoing Cenozoic supergene leaching of quartz and replacement by ochreous goethite to form low phosphorous BID micro-nanoplaty hematite-martite-ochreous goethite clasts. BID martitenanoplaty hematite-martite-ochreous goethite clasts and detritus eroded from hill slopes were deposited in the valleys as an initial single DID-5-DID-4 unit over a weathered pre-CID basal conglomerate. DID-5 and DID-4 underwent goethite cementation of the matrix followed by replacement by hydrohematite, hematite, and maghemite. DID-3 formed during subsequent periods of erosion of largely DID-4 hematite clasts and pisoids. Groundwater flow-through hematite canga resulted in partial to complete hydration replacement of DID-4 hematite clasts and matrix by ochreous and vitreous goethite to form DID-5. Deposition of DID-2 to DID-0 was via reworking and deposition of DID-5 to DID-4 canga and DID-3 as clasts and pisoids/ooids, as well as siliceous hematite and BIF sourced from the Joffre Member in the hill slopes.

The DOZ underground mine at PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper and gold mine in Indonesia with current ore production of 42 000 tpd. Because of the mine expansion into the West DOZ more ventilation raises are needed to create a safe and healthy work place. All ventilation raises that connect the extraction levels to the underlying gallery exhaust drifts at DOZ are now developed using drop raise techniques. This paper describes the improvements undertaken to increase blasting efficiency, to decrease cost and reduce safety risks. This was achieved by using deck loading and presplitting, changing of stemming materials and prevention of excessive raise collar cratering (blow up).

Various aspects concerning gold are mentioned below. These have no common theme but suggest points of interest any one of which, if warranted, could lead to development later and elsewhere. &apos;High level&apos; auriferous gravels The gold deposits of Victoria are commonly classified as being either primary or secondary. Most primary occurrences comprise gold present in quartz reefs, together with other lode-like occurrences in which gold is associated with various sulphides, with or without quartz. Secondary occurrences are derived by physical release of primary gold and subsequent concen- tration of it as a constituent of sediments. Secondary gold deposits may be themselves eroded so leading to third or even fourth generation gold.

I feel a little like the Parson delivering his Sunday Sermon, chastizing his parishioners for not coming to Church. Those who need to hear me are absent.Nevertheless, I hope that if you agree with what I am about to say you will go forth and spread the word.We often hear of the impact mining has on the community. I prefer tonight to deal with the impact some community attitudes have on mining, and I want to point out that the results of these attitudes rebound to the detriment of our society. I want to deal particularly with regulation, taxation, and proflts.In a civilization whose standard of living is essentially dependent on an adequate and reliable supply of cheap metals and fuels, it should be evident to Blind Freddie that mining must be encouraged.I must express concern at the constraints inflicted on the mining industry by our community. We tend to blame Government for our difficulties, but we must recognize that Government acts merely as agent for the community. It is fair to say that in a free society, if Government actions do not reflect the demands of the electorate, then it doesn&apos;t stay the Government. It is important though for Government, in framing its policies, to ensure that it is not unduly influenced by the loud voices of minority groups.The people of our nation have every right to demand that our industry meet certain criteria to be allowed to operate. We all wish to live in a healthy and congenial environment, and to have our individual comforts protected. It is essential, however, that the community realizes that its demands on the mining industry are affecting Australia&apos;s prosperity.Each new regulation and each new tax or impost has its effect on investment, employment, and national revenue. Restraints result in an increase in costs which in turn raises the minimum value of a mineral deposit which is economically mineable. It results in minerals, which could be mined under more favourable circumstances, remaining in the ground, perhaps lost for ever.

The United States Steel Mining Co., Inc. recently experienced a major mine fire at the Cumberland Mine. This mine is located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and is mining a high volatile bituminous coal seam (Pittsburgh Seam). The mine fire was success- fully controlled and extinguished without loss of life or serious injury to any miner or mine rescue personnel and finally reopened within 40 days of its inception.

Stratabound/stratiform and remobilised mineralisation have been recognised as the two dominant styles of mineralisation which constitute the Broken Hill ore deposit. Recognition of prospective sites for accumulation of ore depends on understanding the heterogeneity of the ore environment and the distribution of the two styles of mineralisation. The internal stratigraphy of the Broken Hill ore deposit and its enveloping rocks, is described, and a generalised stratigraphic setting of the stratiform mineralisation is outlined. The highland region of Papua-New Guinea is relatively rugged terrain where stream gradients are steep. In areas where porphyry copper deposits outcrop the streams commonly expose primary sulphide mineralization in unoxidized rocks. Stream sediment geochemistry combined with float examination and broad geological mapping proved to be an effective tool for detection of outcropping bodies of mineralization. After discovery, detailed stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and rock chip sampling, together with detailed geological mapping proved adequate to delineate drilling targets. Reconnaissance stream sediment sample density was dictated by geology and access and a density of one sample per 25 Km2, or less, was desirable to ensure a high degree of confidence in the programme. Research indicated that the base metals occur in sulphide form in stream sediment and that the -80 mesh size fraction gave the most reliable results. According to our experimental results, the following oxygen probe recommended, that is, the magnesia stabilized zirconia was employed as a solid electrolyte and Fe.FexO solid elect- rode was used as a reference electrode. Using such an oxygen probe, we tried to measure the oxygen potentials in molten metals, mattes and gases in the following fields of non-ferrous metal industry, molten copper in the side launder before casting, molten crude lead in the forehearth of ISP blast furnace, molten copper mattes in the forehearth of blast furnace and in the settler of flash smelting furnace, gas in the settler of copper flash smelting furnace and flue gas in the electric furnace for ferro-silicon. In the past ten years or so, many experi- mental results in the field of fundamental studies have confirmed that the equilibrium oxygen potential could be measured conveniently and accurately by an electrochemical method using a zirconia solid electrolyte. Recently, such an electrochemical technique has been also applied to a device for physicochemical invest- igation or process control in the non-ferrous metal industry. Such a device consists of an oxygen con- centration cell with stabilized zirconia, and it is commonly called an "oxygen probe" or "oxygen sensor".

Geological evaluations of coal deposits have been traditionally undertaken in a somewhat manual manner. Information is collected downhole by chip sampling, coring and using downhole geophysical logging. This information is then interpreted by an experienced geologist to define the coal and noncoal lithological units. Coal units were subsequently correlated to provide data for structural modelling. In recent years a number of advancements in interpretation techniques have been made based on Artificial Intelligence. This paper describes an integrated geological interpretation system based on maximised use of Al techniques. The first part describes the lithological interpretation which uses a number of boreholes with both logged lithology and downhole geophysical logs. This information provides a learning set of data to the neural network. The second part concentrates on the correlation of both coal and noncoal units from borehole to borehole. Problems in this area, in a manual sense, are interpretation of correlation across weathering zones and other geological anomolies. The technique is based on pattern recognition and dynamic programming techniques where a correlation matrix is developed relating all holes with their maximum correlations.

The satisfactory testing and characterisation of mineralisation amenable to heap leaching, is of prime importance to successful operation of a project. This paper outlines a methodology for assessing material suitability. A general model is used for classing material types for suitability for treatment and for economic analysis. The four levels of these are overburden, oxide, transitional and unoxidised materials. During exploration, reverse circulation (RC) drilling can be used effectively to define these zones by a combination of logging, analysis and provision of cuttings for column leach and bottle roll trials. RC cuttings can he used effectively for column leach trials, when calibrated against conventional processing-sized samples, obtained from surface. Tbis allows metallurgical testing to depth and definition of transitional ore types and the base of oxidation, accurately and economically with an acceptable density of samples. The accurate prediction of base of oxidation and variations in recovery with depth and ore types can be used to develop &apos;economic&apos; pit designs with zones of variable recovery. Petrological studies of leaching results and examination of mineralisation types carried out on concentrates, provide information on gold distribution and physical and chemical constraints. The examination of concentrates can be particularly useful for types of mineralisation when overall gold content is frequently at or below one pan per million. Explanation of anomalous recovery of gold grains in dense goethite and solution-robbing by carbonaceous material can be identified by use of petrological and scanning electron microscope. An understanding of the role of the host rock in leaching characteristics can also he provided by petrology where siliceous or clayey materials can require significantly different treatment.

The presence of coal in the Sydney area was confirmed in 1891 when Cremorne Bore No. I intersected cindered coal at 1 854 m. The decision to develop Sydney Harbour Colliery was based on the results of Cremorne Bore No. 2 (drilled in 1892) in which a 3.12 m. seam of unaltered coal was encountered at 889 m. Geologists from the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources consider that this seam is probably equivalent to an upper split of the Bulli seam. Long Cove at Balmain was selected by Sydney Harbour Collieries Ltd. as the site for mine development in 1896. This was due to opposition to the proposed establishment of a colliery on the north shore of Port Jackson near Cremorne. Construction of the main access and ventilation shafts (termed Birth- day and Jubilee), other mine infrastructure and the quay wall occurred between 1897 and 1902. A fatal accident in which five men were killed occurred during the construction of the Birthday Shaft in 1900. This acci- dent resulted in amendments to the Mining Act providing for guide rails in shafts.

The Browns Creek deposit is located 8 kin west of Blayney and 220 km west of Sydney (Figure 1), at lat 33¦32&apos;S, long 149¦10&apos;E on the Bathurst (SI 55-8) 1:250 000 scale map sheet. The total measured, indicated and inferred resource at 30 June 1997 was 1.29 Mt at 6.39 g/t gold and 0.45 per cent copper. During the 1996 - 97 year 263 557 t of ore at 6.30 g/t gold and 0.48 per cent copper was treated, to produce 47 496 oz of gold, and 1 169 t of contained copper in concentrate. As the result of an increase in the resources and reserves, because of underground exploration drilling and accelerated mine development, 1997 production at Browns Creek is predicted to expand from 240 000 to 390 000 tpa, to yield more than 70 000 oz of gold per year.

The mining and resources industry in general has relied on macro separation technologies (greater than 1 micron) through processes which include: ò sedimentation ò flocculation and coagulation screening and filtration ò absorption ò magnetic separation ò chemical leaching and precipitation Essentially, these processes and technologies provide the industry with an effective arsenal to handle most separation requirements to date. Dewatering of solutions is one of the most significant requirements of the resources industry, as practically all mining endeavours use water in their process for leaching, extraction, cooling, dilution or for potable drinking water.
