The operation of the cyanide-sensitive Mintek/TB1 kegold electrode was studied in the laboratory, with regard to equilibration time and drift, the effects of pH, stirring, salinity, dissolved oxygen, zinc and copper(I) ions. Methods for valid calibration in the range 20-600 mg(NaCN)/L and pH values in the range 9 - 12 in the absence of copper were also studied. Increasing the salinity beyond a threshold of 40 g(NaCI)/L improves calibration and measurement. The sensitivity is 91 mV per decade change in the concentration of ionic cyanide, and output is reproducible to within 10 mV with attention to the factors listed above. However, salinity of 40 g(NaCI)/L also sensitises the electrode to interference by copper(1) ions. This copper sensitivity seems capable of saturation, suggesting a research strategy for possible remedies.

The Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (A.C.I.R.L.) MINVENT computer program can be used to simulate existing and projected colliery ventilation requirements. New collieries can be planned using a database of ventilation parameters which were ascertain- ed by A.C.I.R.L. surveys at selected collieries in N.S.W. and Queensland. Several techniques are used in both the formulation of the database and in the evaluat- ion of a ventilation system, prior to analysis by the MINVENT program. The analysis of a ventilation system requires the measurement of air quantities, pressures and hence airway resistances. All resistances are calculated at standard air density of 1.205 kg/m3. Air densities are derived from barometric pressure and wet and dry bulb temperature readings. Airway frictional and shock losses, leakage through stoppings and overcasts, flow of air through regulators, face resistance and resistance of anomalous ventilation features are related to the typical Australian measured data presented.

This paper describes the current and finished design work which has been performed for shallow rock station caverns for New York CityÆs first new subway construction in 60 years. A new robust, sophisticated, design procedure has been developed for two up to 30 m wide caverns, with overburden of less then 12 m, and rock cover to span ratios (C/S) in the order of 0.25. The design is based on empirical input parameters like the Q-value, rock mass rating (RMR) values, rock mass class after Cording (1984), cover to span ratios, which have been validated by the use of structural computer models as well as two- and three-dimensional numerical discontinuum models. The design approach is a staged approach using first principles, empirical models and non-linear FEM and DEM models. In addition, the paper describes the factors and circumstances why shallow caverns have been selected instead of cut-and-cover structures and why all the underground station structures have been developed as drained structures.

The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:

Ever since it made its debut in 1962, in the form of a Robbins 31R, the raiseborer has become an accepted tool in the mining and civil construction industries. The first raiseborer to be used in the Witwatersrand goldfields made its appearance in 1968. This was a Robbins 42R which could raisebore 185m deep holes to 1,22m diameter. From 1968 to 1973 capability increased with the introduction of first the 61R, then the 71R and finally the 83R, which could raisebore 610m deep holes to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for larger holes but the cost of bigger, more powerful machines requiring larger, stronger drill pipe, cutters and other accessories was prohibitive. To avoid replacing existing models such as the 71R, and in order to increase their capability, the concept of reaming in two stages sequentially was developed jointly by a German drilling equipment manufacturer, Wirth, their South African subsidiary, Transbor, and a local contractor, Rocbor Raiseboring and Mining Contractors. The result, the Sequential Reaming Head, proved most successful and existing machines, normally limited to 2,44m diameter holes, could now ream to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for even larger holes. In order to maximise the use of the sequential reaming head to meet this demand the HG330, and subsequently the HG330SP raiseborer were developed. Using a 4,26m/6,02m cutting head, these machines have raisebored holes 1000m deep in hard rock. The raise- boring of the first major hole to be excavated by this combination, the 484m deep x 6,02m diameter surface shaft at Premier Mine is described. Reference is also made to six other shafts which have been completed or are under construction.

The Endeavor Mine, located to the north of Cobar, New South Wales, was purchased by CBH Resources Pty Ltd in September 2003. The operation has been producing lead and zinc concentrate continuously for over twenty-three years. In 2004, a water management program was instigated to improve the raw water use efficiency of the mining operation. The water management program involved the establishment of a Water Management Committee, a review and quantification of water use across the site, investigation and implementation of efficient water use practices, and workforce awareness training. The program has seen the amount of water used per tonne of ore milled reduced from an average of 1.08 kL/t in the March 2004 quarter, to 0.68 kL/t in the March 2005 quarter. This paper outlines the Endeavor Mine water management program and may serve as a model for other operations that are planning to improve their water use efficiency.

A project to develop the Zinclor electrowinning cell to industrial size is being conducted at Tecnicas Reunidas' Research and Development Centre with Spanish Ministry of Industry support. This project is the final development phase in zinc electrowinning from a chloride medium, the highest ZINCLOR technology development level prior to the industrial scale having already been reached. This paper covers the outcomes and conclusions corresponding to project Phases 1 and 2: Process Selection and Industrial Electrodes (1 m2) design and testing. The most important achievement reached is that there are presently available industrial cathodes and anodes for the Zinclor diaphragm cell giving an optimum response for zinc chloride electrowinning with unit power consumptions between 2.65 and 2.80 kWh/kg Zn, depending on the diaphragm type. Standard electrolysis conditions were: 65 g/L ZnC12, 3 g/L HCl, 160 g/L NaCl, 350 g/t Zn arabig gum as the addition agent, 36¦C, and 400 A/m2 current density. The selection of electrodes, diaphragms and organic additives for the industrial scale tests have been optimised. The complete electrowinning cell development, with electrodes having an active area of I m2, enables the evaluation of Zinclor Technology application for industrial processes.

Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K,) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and the formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

Blue amphibole-bearing rocks in the North D'aguilar Block of southeast Queensland occur either as relict pods and lenses within regionally extensive greenschist facies phyllites and schists or as blocks entrained in serpentinite-matrix melange. Epidote + crossite-bearing varieties predominate and formed under conditions consistent with underplating and high P:T metamorphism in a subduction-related tectonic environment. Neither lawsonite nor jadeite has been observed and metamorphic conditions are estimated at 380-4500C for pressures of 0.5-0.8 GPa. High P:T metamorphism occurred during the earliest stages of deformation and was superimposed upon protoliths of inferred Late Devonian - Early Carboniferous age, including mafic volcanics, tuffs and coarse volcaniclastic breccias as well as pelagic and henipelagic sediments, all of which have undergone varying degrees of over-printing to the greenschist facies. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred during the second phase of deformation and was associated with the formation of mainly flat-lying or subhorizontal structures; it followed the cessation of subduction and occurred in response to either thermal relaxation during uplift or the imposition of regional heating induced by crustal thickening and/or synkinanatic granite emplacement. Uplift and cooling of the high P:T rocks was completed by 260-265 Ma and may have occurred in response to the same extensional processes which gave rise to the onset of rifting in the adjacent Esk Trough.

The Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) was established by mining companies in 2006 to influence manufacturer's equipment design through a process of engagement. 2010 EMESRT member companies include Anglo American, Barrick, BHP Billiton, Centennial Coal, Collahausi, Newcrest, Newmont, Rio Tinto, Vale and Xstrata.Driven by a persistent need for retrofits to new equipment, such as haul trucks, EMESRT initially engaged with Surface Equipment Manufacturers including Caterpillar, Komatsu, Leibherr, Hitachi, Le Tourneau and Terex. These OEMs responded positively to the EMESRT initiative, welcoming the opportunity for dialogue with an aligned industry regarding human factors issues related to equipment design, rather than needing to respond to the disparate range of demands for design modifications previously received from individual customers. This engagement process is about making global sustained changes within the OEM organisations and within the mining companies. It is a very international exercise. For example, over two weeks in September 2010, a total of 21 different miners from ten different companies travelled from Australia, South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Singapore and the United States to engage with OEM counterparts who assembled from the United States, Japan, France, Sweden, Finland and Germany. EMESRT Surface Group representatives completed a whirlwind tour of the major North American manufacturers of mining equipment. Starting in Dallas (Atlas Copco, LeTourneau), this tour passed through Gainesville (Sandvik), Newport News (Liebherr), Guelph - Ontario (Hitachi) and Milwaukee (P&H Mining/Joy Global; Bucyrus), before winding up in Peoria, Illinois (Komatsu, Caterpillar). Over nine meetings, this group engaged with 129 individuals from nine OEMs. The EMESRT group welcomed miners from four non-member companies to come along for the meetings. These companies are Syncrude Canada Ltd, the Kearl Oil Sands Project - Imperial Oil (ESSO), Suncor Energy Ltd and Teck Resources Ltd.Other mining industry sectors have now expanded the EMESRT scope from surface mining to include exploration and underground mining equipment. In 2009, EMESRT was organised into four Technical Groups, consisting of EMESRT member company representatives, to focus on engagement with OEMs of surface, underground coal and soft rock, underground hard rock, and exploration drilling equipment. An advisory group has been formed to coordinate activities between all workgroups and provide strategic direction and cohesion between all activities. The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (UQ-SMI) facilitates and coordinates all EMESRT activities on behalf of member companies. Building on successes with individual Surface Mining OEMs, EMESRT now aims to help OEMs in their transition to a sustainable design process that will incorporate and address specific design philosophies at the concept phase of design, so that significant improvements can be made up front for little cost within the overall budget. EMESRT members plan to educate all stakeholders, internally, within their own companies, and externally, by addressing industry associations, regulators and other end users about new ways of evaluating equipment design based on EMESRT purchasing specifications. This presentation will outline the EMESRT approach and report on progress in 2010.

The Weipa bauxite mining operation on the west coast of Cape York currently mines lb million tonnes of crude ore per year from the Andoom and Weipa mines. Andoom ore is trucked up to 4 km to a rail load station and hauled 20 km by train to the Beneficiation Plant. Weipa ore is trucked up to 7 km to the Beneficiation Plant. Increasing haul lengths and production requirements have led to a progression of larger two axle rear dump trucks and currently he intrcducticn of 145-tonne, three axle L t Dm dump trucks. bith the introduction of the Andoom a operation in 1972, the decision was made to use a railway system to haul crude ore from Andoom to Weipa. This system has proved to be successful from both an economical and operational view point. Due to the successful combination of a truck and rail haulage operation in Andoom, future :evelopment of orebodies requiring increased haul distances and increased production tonnages will probably result in extension r>f the railway system to compliment the trucking operation from the mine face.

A trial embankment was constructed using coarse coal mine reject on a deposit of crusted coal mine tailings at New Hope Colliery, located in the Bundamba District of the West Moreton Coalfields in South East Queensland, Australia. The purpose of the trial embankment was to assess the load carrying capacity and settlement behaviour of the crusted tailings, including an assessment of strength gain in the tailings under the influence of the fill. Prior to construction of the trial embankment, a site investigation of the tailings deposit was carried out. This comprised vane shear strength testing, together with disturbed sampling and undisturbed block sampling for the purposes of laboratory testing. Following the site investigation, settlement plates and standpipes were installed at various depths and locations within the tailings in the vicinity of the proposed embankment. The instrumentation enabled the magnitudes and distributions of settlement and pore pressure within the tailings to be determined during and following construction of the embankment. The embankment was constructed using coarse reject in three equal lifts to a height of 3.0 m. The tailings sustained a maximum settlement under the weight of the fill of 290 mm, representing about 4.2 ii of the average initial thickness of the tailings and a loss of embankment height of about 9.7 %. By the end of the monitoring period the strength of the softer tailings underlying therust had roughly doubled under the influence of tha cmbarikment

Mid-ocean ridges host approximately 65 per cent of about 100 known sites of high-temperature venting and polymetallic sulfide deposits; most of them are located at the East Pacific Rise (EPR), while more diverse mineralisation styles occur at the Mid-Atlantic Rise (MAR). Seafloor hydrothermal activity at the EPR are related to MORB while different substrates, including MORB and ultramafic intrusive rocks, are associated with æblack smokersÆ at the MAR. Depth of hydrothermal activity ranges from 0.7 to 4.3 km. High-temperature vents precipitating Cu-Fe sulfides (chalcopyrite and isocubanite, rare bornite), pyrrhotite, pyrite (¦ marcasite), and sphalerite, and low-temperature edifices precipitating marcasite (with pyrite), sphalerite, barite, andsubordinate chalcopyrite (pyrrhotite and isocubanite are absent) occur in both environments. There are considerable differences in Fe, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au and trace element contents in ores and in theFeS contents in Zn-sulfides in these deposits. Acomparison with anhydrite and sulfide minerals precipitating from modern black smoker fluids sulfide reveals many similarities but also some important differences. Fluids with salinity values above and below that of seawater at 400¦C down to 130 - 170¦C deposited sulfide minerals. Mantle-derived He prevails in fluids trapped by sulfides in EPR 9¦N and 21¦N hydrothermal systems. Hydrothermal fluids in MAR and back-arc systems are richer in radiogenic 4He. The sulfur isotope composition varies in the different hydrothermal fields and within zones of a chimney. EPR sulfides display narrower range of d34S values, while MAR and back-arc sulfides can bedepleted and enriched in the heavier d34S isotope. The most important finding is that fluid temperature, salinity, R/Ra ratios and d34S values ranged more significantly in the polymetallic sulfide deposits than when measured directly on venting fluids. The project is undertaken by Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, to store 65 000 t of LPG in underground storage at Port Botany, NSW. The contractor, Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd, elected to use drilling and blasting techniques. The thermodynamic model for species distribution in aluminium chloride (AlCl3) and 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) system was developed. The experimental thermodynamic data, considering a range of aluminium chloride species, such as AlCl4-, Al2Cl7-, Al3Cl10-, Al4Cl13-, and Al2Cl6 were used in developing the model. When the XAlCl3 was in the range of 0 to 0.50, only anion species Cl- and AlCl4- were existing in the solution. As the XAlCl3 value increased more than 0.50, the available anions were Al2Cl7-, Al3Cl10-, Al4Cl13-, and Al2Cl6. Specifically, the concentration of Al2Cl7- increased in the composition range from 0.50 to 0.67 XAlCl3, after which it decreased. This change in the concentration of Al2Cl7- was due to its reaction with excess AlCl3, leading to the formation of Al3Cl10-. The average cathode current density was determined by the electrochemical experiments varying XAlCl3 from 0.50 to 0.71 in the AlCl3:BMIC solutions. The average cathode current density increased as the XAlCl3 increased from 0.50 to 0.67. However, it decreased when the XAlCl3 > 0.67. This trend can be attributed to the electroactive species Al2Cl7-. The Al2Cl7- promotes the reduction rate at the cathode, resulting in an increase in the average cathode current density.

The recovery and concentration of ultra-fine iron ore can provide significant economic benefits. Presently, there are limited options available given the low settling rates achieved by conventional gravity separation and the relatively poor performance of reverse flotation. The Reflux Classifier is a new water-based gravity separation technology that consists of a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. This arrangement promotes a powerful throughput advantage compared to conventional fluidisation and a highly selective hydrodynamic basis for achieving sharp separations. A high shear rate develops within the inclined channels, which generates sufficient hydrodynamic lift to convey the lower-density particles (even if they are relatively coarse) to overflow while retaining the high-density particles (even those that are ultra-fine) for discharge to the underflow. The technology has previously been used around the world on particle sizes in excess of 0.1 mm. The present work, however, is concerned with density-based separations down to much finer particle sizes approaching 0.01 mm.A major advantage of the Reflux Classifier technology is the achievement of simultaneous gravity separation and desliming via a single-stage separation. A series of continuous experiments was conducted using an iron ore feed with head grade of 35 wt per cent FeT and nominal top size of 0.106 mm, with 59 wt per cent being below 0.038 mm in size. At a low throughput of 1.5 t/(m2 h), the Reflux Classifier produced high-grade products at a high recovery. For the entire feed, grades of 66.1 wt per cent FeT with Fe recoveries of 80 per cent were achieved in a single-stage separation. Within the 0.020–0.038 mm size fraction, grades of 68.8 per cent were achieved with iron recoveries of 94.7 per cent. Excellent recoveries of up to 57.0 per cent were achieved for the -0.020 mm size fraction. The ability of the inclined channels to retain the fine dense material further enhances the effectiveness of the Reflux Classifier by creating an autogenous dense medium effect within the vertical section. The process of mine planning at AnacondaÆs nickel and cobalt laterite operation located at Murrin-Murrin in the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia is carried out in a number of stages in an endeavour to determine the optimum mining sequence in order to maintain supply to the 4 Mtpa plant subject to operational constraints. The 296 Mt @ 0.99 per cent Ni and 0.064 per cent Co ore reserve (based on a cut-off grade of 0.8 per cent Nickel) is spread geographically widely over three regions comprising Murrin North (15 km + 15 km), Murrin South (7 km + 16 km) and Murrin East (5 km + 13 km) (refer Figure 2). The nickel mineralisation has been broken up further within each region into 18 separate manageable block models representing the 32 different deposits. The models are based initially on the 50 m + 50 m resource drilling for long term planning and updated with 12.5 m + 12.5 m grade control drilling prior to mining. Each of the individual block models are optimised using Whittle 4X software to provide the shells used as the basis for each of the 126 pit designs. The pits are generally nested with starter pits targeting the higher value shells with subsequent pits incrementally cutting back ultimately to the life of mine shells. A series of steps including: the coding of the individual pits into the block model; data export; TCL scripting (to calculate additional economic and tracking information); importing; and re-blocking; completes the transfer of the data into a MineMax (mixed integer linear programming schedule optimising software) model. Using MineMax and the application of operational and production constraints allows the optimisation, assessment and economic evaluation of alternative scenarios in order to determine the optimum life of mine plan and schedule.

Lower Silesia Coal Basin/SW Poland/ is adjacent to highly gas saturated igneous massiv and since the beginning of this century more than 1500 outbursts have occurred in four existing mines, including 1295 in the most hazardous mine Nowa Ruda. Prevailing part of these are carbon dioxide/coal outbursts of ejected masses 50-5000 tonnes/av.200/t and gas volume released from 200 m3 to 800,000 m3 Magnitude of these phenomena is growing with the depth and for present extraction levels/ 375-753 m/ may be expressed by a formula: M = 4.25/H-400/, where M-masses ejected, t and H - depth of extraction, m. Regulations obligatory hitherto call for gas pressure measurements to be made in 3 m long and 42 mm dia. boreholes spaces not more than 25 m along the longwall face and taking sample of drillings for desorption testing. Criteria of a hazard are following: pressure higher than 30 kPa /for C02/ or 80 kPa /for CH4/ and desorption more than 1,44 cm3/g. These criteria are not satisfactory because many outbursts occurred in spite of low values of parameters measured and for several times no hazard was evident after very high values were obtained. Moreover, observations show that a huge majority of case outbursts occurred in coal weakened by local geological distortion.

Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited, Laronde Division, operates the deepest single-lift shaft in the western hemisphere. The initial Penna hoisting plant was designed for a production rate of 1800 tonnes per day (t/d) from a 2240 m deep shaft. Exploration success, while sinking the shaft, led to a decision in 1998 to increase the production rate to 4500 t/d of ore from a loading depth of 2200 m. The new production rate was achieved by increasing the size of the rope and reducing the rope static factor from the existing 5.0 required by regulation to a static factor using the formula 25 000/(4000 + L) contained in a draft document that would eventually become SABS 0294 in South Africa. The formula permits Laronde to use a static factor as low as 4.0. The upgraded Penna hoisting system is the first hoisting plant outside of South Africa to meet the South African requirements. This paper describes the conversion of the hoisting plant to the lower rope selection factor in the year 2000 and the operating and maintenance issues experienced since then.
