With the continued implementation of stricter limitations on the discharge of excess process water from all existing and future mining and metallurgical operations, the design and operation of the entire process water circuit must form an integral part of any total operational package. It is far better to æanticipate and circumvent the problemÆ rather than be forced into an expensive remediation program after the event. By far the greatest problem relates to the treatment and disposal of what is generically known as acid drainage. In simple terms, an acidic metal sulfate solution is generated by a series of chemical and biological reactions as soon as most sulfide minerals are exposed to air and water. Treatment of this solution by one or more of a wide range of chemical and physical options can involve substantial capital and operating costs, although there are recent processing options that yield saleable by-products, thereby reducing the financial liability of what is effectively a waste stream. This presentation provides an overview of the Australian situation compared with the rest of the world and outlines the basic features of a number of the more advanced passive and active acid drainage options.

Within ten months of the first significant intersection on the Vera deposit, approval was given to proceed with a $28.3 M underground development of the Vera-Nancy gold mine. Contrary to what the timeframe suggests, the development of the underground mine was planned in a logical and methodical manner which enabled confirmation of the resource, evaluation of the orebody for mining and sufficient production to recommence milling operations at the Pajingo treatment plant. This paper describes the underlying factors on which the project was planned and developed. The approach has successfully enabled the mine to be in production 18 months after discovery without compromising any future production or potential expansion

In New Zealand, platinum group metals (PGM) occur in three main geological environments of economic interest: layered mafic igneous complexes, the Dun Mountain Ophiolite Belt, and in association with placer gold deposits. Most of the layered mafic complexes with PGM potential occur in the Median Batholith. These include the Longwood (Permian), Bluff (Permian), Riwaka (Devonian) and Rotoroa (Jurassic) igneous complexes. Exploration of the Longwood Complex discovered PGM associated with gabbroic rocks. Best assays to date include a 1 m drill intersection of 1 g/t Pt + Pd and float rock with 3.0 ppm Pt and 3.3 ppm Pd. The Greenhills complex at Bluff consists of basal dunite overlain by wehrlite and gabbro. PGM occur with chrome spinel in the basal dunite and Pt geochemical anomalies have been identified associated with the wehrlite-gabbro contact zone. The Greenhills complex has some similarities to Alaskan-Ural type complexes.Reconnaissance exploration in the Dun Mountain Ophiolite Belt has identified PGM geochemical anomalies, but no follow-up work has been carried out. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, PGM were recovered as a byproduct of placer gold mining in Southland. Placer gold prospects with PGM potential include the Waiau River, deposits flanking the Longwood Complex and some Southland beaches.

Thank you for your introduction and the opportunity to speak at such an important forum. I feel honoured to be the Tas McKee speaker for this yearÆs conference. I can honestly say that Tas McKee typified the spirit that has ensured the survival of the mining industry despite the modern-day challenges that we encounter. He was one of the most influential people in the New Zealand minerals industry. In 1938, with his father and brother, Tas established Lime & Marble Limited. Over its history, this company evolved from its original base of marble mining to diversify into gold mining and exploration for other industrial minerals, uranium, precious and base metals. He was truly a pioneer that persevered against the odds.   That leads me to the subject of my discussion today. I am going to delve into todayÆs challenges as they apply to gold companies. While we gold miners should be generating record returns, the gold industry shareholder return performance in this buoyant market has barely equalled that of the gold price. It is a dilemma but one that can be resolved with the right strategy.

Maghemite - A Source of Heavy Medium for Coal Washeries Use of magnetite as heavy medium in coal preparation plants has been increasing steadily in recent years. It might be in short supply in some areas or excessively costly in certain times. In Turkey, the cost of heavy medium magnetite has almost tripled since 2003. As a result, alternative sources of heavy medium material have been evaluated. A maghemite ore from Elbistan-Kahramanmaras was found to be an interesting source. Tests showed that the maghemite ore can be enriched via magnetic separation at 1556 gauss to obtain a heavy medium material with 4.93 g/cm3 density and 97.22 per cent magnetic recovery. Further tests were conducted to determine the optimum field strength for magnetic separation, friability and regeneration recovery.

Globally, private minerals companies considering the transition to a public company and entrepreneurs looking to create a new public company through, for example, an initial public offering or by a reverse takeover have many options. For companies with assets around the Pacific Rim, there are arguably five key stock/securities exchanges that actively promote international minerals company listings, and these are located in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.Listing on any of these exchanges requires a range of technical, commercial, financial and legal documentation. Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements. PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.The Toguraci underground mine development commenced in 2011 with ore production commencing in 2012. Water temperatures ranging from 50°C to 80°C were encountered in the Toguraci open pit associated with the structures containing the gold bearing veins and are believed to be fed from a relic volcanic system one to two kilometres below the mine. The extent to which man's activities are influencing the earth's climate is subject to considerable debate. Internationally however, this debate has been put aside somewhat by the Kyoto Protocol. This international agreement is the political response to the threat of Global warming, predicated on the precautionary principle.NZ is seeking to be a leader in the Kyoto Protocol. Given our unique GHG emission profile and the structure of our economy, and the major uncertainties in both the science of climate change and the Kyoto Protocol itself, this desire to lead is absolutely inappropriate in this instance. We face a different, and often more severe, set of challenges in an economy that prices C emissions than virtually all of our trading partners. Unfortunately, these differences have not been reflected in climate change policy development to date. This represents a major threat to New Zealand's economy, wealth and jobs, particularly in the sectors that have been the core drivers of our economy over the last 20 years or so - agriculture, energy, primary processing. We do not, and should not, seek to avoid the issue but we must protect our economy and move with or follow our trading partners and competitors, not lead them.

Zinc sulphide concentrate from Mount lsa, Australia, was leached in acidic sulphate-chloride solutions using ferric ions as oxidants under atmospheric pressure. The parameters of temperature, particle size and concentrations of ferric and chloride ions were evaluated.The shrinking core model can be used to describe the leaching which is limited by the electrochemical processes in the initial leaching stage, and by both surface reaction and pore diffusion processes subsequently. The apparent activation energy measured in the initial leaching stage is 49 kJ/mole over the temperature range 60 to 90°C.About 99 per cent of the contained zinc in the -45+38 µm particle sample dissolved at 90°C in a 0.5 M H2SO4/0.1 M Fe2(SO4)3/0.8 M NaCI solution within two hours. Some nine per cent of sulphide sulphur was oxidised through to sulphate; the remainder was convened to elemental sulphur.The mixed sulphate-chloride system has advantages over separate chloride and sulphate systems due to the low reagent cost, high leaching rate and possible selective leaching of zinc sulphide concentrate with high lead contents.

With the launch of Immersive Technologies' next generation of Advanced Equipment Simulators for the mining industry, correlating and influencing safety, productivity and maintenance with operator competency improvements is now made even more effective. In early 2008, Immersive assembled a project team to investigate the potential linkages between operator competency and performance. Advanced Equipment Simulator Users with a range of sophistication were interviewed and consulted. The result was new and enhanced 'value realisation' programs to directly assist mine sites to deliver the expected return on investment (ROI) from simulators and operator competency development. In just over one year, 29 mine sites around the world have benefited from 34 completed programs. Case studies have been compiled to demonstrate the impact of the implementation of this approach, including at the following operations: Anglo Coal - Callide (Australia), Freeport McMoRAN - Grasburg (Indonesia), Equinox Minerals - Lumwana (Zambia), Peabody Energy - Cabllo (USA), and Xstrata - Lomas Bayas (Chile). Significant performance improvements have been achieved including: reductions of 47 per cent in gear shifting and 37 per cent in over speed errors, improvements of 68 per cent in park break errors and 12 per cent in spotting time, and increase of 54 per cent in passing emergency fire handling competency tests. This presentation draws on these case studies to clearly demonstrate the linkage between improved operator competency through the implementation of training programs tailored around Advanced Equipment Simulators and production performace measured by a range of standard metrics at mines around the world.

PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. This paper identifies the challenges and opportunities for mining companies and communities in investing in human rights compatible, credible, effective and representative company-community relationships.   The paper draws on the work of Professor John Ruggie, Special Representative to the United Nations Secretary General on Business and Human Rights, and his Protect, Respect and Remedy framework for business and human rights, The CDA Collaborative Learning Project, and the experience of Oxfam Australia. This paper begins with the premise that Australian companies commence operations offshore with high expectations and a willingness to work harmoniously with local communities. However, as companies increasingly engage in global operations - particularly in weak governance and conflict zones - the challenge to establish and sustain rights compatible, meaningful, corporate community relationships and grievances mechanisms becomes both more complex and necessary. Establishing trust and honouring commitments made to communities, including legacy issues, is a critical component in good corporate community relations.   The second part of the paper will identify some of the impacts and challenges of mining that need to be addressed in corporate community negotiations and consultation. Respect for indigenous people's rights and their right to give or withhold consent for a project to proceed is increasingly evident, as is the growing global expectations with regard to revenue transparency. As such, key challenges include: grievance mechanisms; free prior and informed consent; transparency and accountability; the gender impact of mining; resettlement, compensation and benefit sharing; and security issues.   Finally, the paper will provide practical guidance to companies on how to establish effective corporate community relationships. It will include examples, such as human rights impact assessments, gender impact assessments, and establishing local level grievance procedures. The paper will include an Oxfam Australia case study of a dialogue mechanism at Tintaya copper mine in Peru.

The Bastnäs-type magnetite-skarn-hosted rare earth element (REE) mineralisations are located in the Palaeoproterozoic Bergslagen ore province, central Sweden, and occur along a ca 100 km long belt of 1.90–1.87 Ga metavolcanosedimentary rocks. Ten different Bastnäs-type deposits have been sampled in order to assess the origin of ore-forming fluids in these systems. Magnetite and quartz have d18O values ranging from -2.3 to +1.1‰ and +7.2 to +8.3‰ respectively. Mineralised carbonates have d18O values between +5.8 and +7.2‰ and d13C values between -5.4 and -3.3‰. Temperature calculations based on the O-isotope composition of mineral pairs, combined with available fluid inclusion data, suggest primary mineralisation at ca 650–400°C. For these temperatures, calculated equilibrium fluids have d18O values that range from those typical of magmatic fluids (+6 to +8‰) to lower values (down to +3‰). Variation in carbonate O and C isotope data are consistent with interaction between local Palaeoproterozoic carbonate rocks (d18O = +12.5 to +19.6‰ and d13C = -1.8 to +1.7‰) and fluids of a magmatic origin. It is suggested that the Bastnäs-type REE-magnetite mineralisations formed as a result of reactions between local carbonate units and high-temperature, magmatic-dominated hydrothermal fluids during 1.90–1.87 Ga (Svecofennian) syn-volcanic activity.CITATION:Sahlström, F, Jonsson, E, Högdahl, K, Harris, C, Troll, V R and Jolis, E M, 2015. Early strategic mine planning includes decisions over the organisation of work and workforce accommodation. These decisions involve significant commitments that affect not only employee quality of life but also the impacts and relationships with existing local communities. Strategies for workforce accommodation are characteristically community-based (either as purpose-built company towns or integrated within existing local communities) or commuter (fly-in, fly-out) mine camps. The quality of accommodation underpins the fulfilment, morale and motivation of employees. This is not only relevant to productivity and safety, but also to recruitment and retention, particularly with the current onset of a significant human resources crisis. In the event that communities exist in proximity to a proposed mine then the accommodation strategy selected can influence the value-adding potential for the sustainable development of such communities. This early planning is particularly challenging where mine locations are isolated and/or face significant economic, social and political adversity. This paper draws upon a case study review of five large mining projects implemented in three South American countries, selected to cover a range of scenarios and accommodation strategies. The review aims to advance our understanding of the complexity of the underlying planning issues. Each scenario considered the prevailing environmental, social, economic and political situation, together with the adopted accommodation strategy. The case study review aimed to identify lessons learned and to make recommendations for advancing mineworkersÆ accommodation planning practice.

The AusIMM is concerned about the longer tem sustainability of the minerals sector in Australasia. Our contention is that the sustainability of the sector is at risk if we do not:   ò encourage more exploration in Australasia by removing impediments and         increasing incentives; ò fund our university and research centres appropriately to increase both our   prospectivity, and our processing efficiencies; and ò manage our human resources better.   This paper will focus on how we can better manage our human resources to assist in ensuring sustainability of the sector in Australasia .   From a production point of view:   Economic output = f (Land, Labour, Capital, Environment) where Land refers to all of the natural resources used in production. As well as land itself it includes water, forest, fisheries, oil, gas and mineral deposits. Labour refers to the skills and capabilities used by humans in the production process. Capital describes all of the manufactured aids used in the process of production1. The challenge for management is to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of labour in the production process whilst maintaining sustainable development.   The 1992 Rio Summit defined sustainable development as maintaining and enhancing:   ò natural capital û defined as all natural resources, both environmental and   those of traditional economic value; ò manufactured capital û made by human kind, including produced goods,     infrastructure and built environment; ò human capital û defined as the health, well being, intellectual capabilities and   spiritual welfare of individuals; and ò social capital û defined as social relations and consultations within and   between societies, their norms and functionality2.   The minerals sector in Australasia has successfully focused on the technical aspects of each of these components of sustainable development with primary attention applied to natural capital and efficient utilisation of manufactured capital. The technical aspects of human capital and social have also been addressed through an emphasis on occupational health and safety and interaction with local communities however I suggest that, to date, insufficient emphasis has been placed on labour (human capital) to maximise economic output1.   It has become increasingly common practice to identify land as natural capital, labour as human capital and capital as physical capital. That is labour has been treated as a commodity rather than an opportunity to create a comparative advantage and this will be the greatest challenge for mine management to show leadership over the next decade of the 21st Century.   This paper will outline characteristics of the sector which are relevant to the management and utilisation of labour, outline the outcomes of recent AusIMM surveys, review the reasons for the current and future anticipated skills shortages, some innovative responses to the challenges and finally, suggestions on how mine management can show leadership.

Traditionally gold producers had built up hedge books to protect themselves against adverse changes in the commodity price, but diversified mining groups were staunchly opposed to hedging in any shape or form. The situation has evolved over the past few years. Gold miners have been reducing the size of their hedge books in line with the rising gold price. Commentators have talked about ædouble-digit dehedgingÆ and have suggested that this is the final countdown for gold hedge books. It sounded as if the era of hedging by mining companies was drawing to a close. But as appearances can sometimes be misleading, we decided to find out what mining companies were actually doing. Companies listed on stock exchanges are now obliged to give details of their derivatives holdings in their annual reports. Two or three years ago there was no such obligation. Our reality check was based on the latest annual report issued by three multinational mining groups; two with diametrically opposed views on hedging (Rio Tinto and Barrick) and the third (BHP Billiton) with an intermediate position. This snapshot of their derivative positions at a point in time revealed that Barrick and BHP Billiton have substantial derivatives positions (worth billions of dollars) to protect against adverse changes in foreign exchange rates and interest rates. Moreover Barrick has recently started hedging against increases in fuel prices. Despite its opposition to hedging, Rio Tinto has derivative positions worth several hundred million dollars, but these are primarily a legacy from various mergers and acquisitions over recent years or were entered into as a condition of project financing. Lastly we were surprised to discover that Barrick was holding asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP). So the idea that mining companies donÆt hedge their risks is just another urban myth.

The main purpose of these systems is to provide managers with reliable and timely information on the current state and typical tendencies of operation of the facilities under control. However until the present time no scientific and methodical ground for system monitoring of the mining companies and branches has been created. Therefore, the authors of the report have aimed to assess the current situation with regard to the researches in this field and to do analysis of the most important aspects and ways of solution of the issue under consideration.
