OWING to the gradual depletion of the hitherto plentiful supply of firewood in the immediate vieinity of Queenstown and Gormanston, which caused a steady increase in the cost of fuel for domestic purposes, the Mount Lyell Company took steps several years ago to make available as a substitute electric current from its Lake Margaret hydro-electric supply. In order to make this practicable it was necessary that the cost of electric power for heating purposes should compare favourably with the cost, of fuel, and the installation of domestic appliances brought within reach of the average householder, and efforts have been continuously directed towards this end since the year 1928.WATER HEATERSThe installation of electrical apparatus in local dwellings began with hot-water services, the heating elements being the types then procurable on the market and adapted to meet requirements.These, however, did not prove satisfactory, but the study of their bilure resulted in a type being developed locally which has overcome all difficulties. The first type of water heater evolved was an outside circulation one the element of which consisted of an iron pipe through which the water passed, insulated with micanite and wound with nichrome wire, the latter being covered with alundun cement to keep it in position and prevent oxidation. This was insulated on its outside surface with a layer of asbestos flour, and connected to the hot-water container as shown in Fig. 1. It was found, however, that the iron pipe had a short life, due to a certain amount of acidity in the water, and a copper pipe was substituted which proved very durable. Some heaters with this improved type of element are still operating after six years of use. The resistance wire is run at a very low current density, which ensures durability.

The amount of liquid retained in a porous bed is determined by weighing a column containing the bed.The column is attached to the free end of a cantilevered beam, and changes in weight are determined by calibrated strain gauges (which form a resistance bridge) attached near the fixed cnd of the beam. By coupling the output from the strain gauges to an amplifier and a recorder, a continuous record of changes in the drainage characteristics of the bed may be obtained.

Probably no other country or coutinent has so many rich deposits of various different minerals as Australia. Long ago in the days of my boyhood in the old land the marvellous discoveries of high percentage copper at Burra Burra, Peak Downs, Yudanamutana, and other mines, was one of the principal themes of conversation in mining circles whilst the specimens of malachite, azurite, etc, brought home by returning miners were the admiration of my boyish eyes.Later on the WalIaroo and Moonta mines still further helped to heighten the reputation of Australia as a copper-producing country. During the 21 years that the writer has been resident in the Australian colonies, other mineral deposits have sprung into prominence, and with a Mount Bischoff for tin, a Broken Hill for silver and lead, and a Mount Morgan for gold, Australia can now boast that it has had within its borders the leading mines of the world, in four different minerals, and still at least maintains that pre-eminence in gold, silver and tin. To the miner from the old land, Australian mining is at first a revelation and a wonder. In very many instances he looks in vain for the regular strike and dip of the veins he has been accustomed to'Smooth hanging and foot alls are often wanting. 'Huge irregular deposits, like those mentioned above, viz., Burra Burra, Mount Bischoff, Broken Hill, and Mount Morgan, are mysteries that will take time to fathom-if, indeed, they are ever thoroughly understood and in many a smaller deposit there is much to interest alike the professor in the college and the miner in the mine.

The limit of pressure to which an underground dam may with safety be subjected, is a question that-as far as the writer knows has not received the same attention from authorities on engineering construction, or practical mining, that has been accorded to questions on which the design and strength of other structures or machines in connection with a mine are based. That dams may, under certain conditions, be constructed to resist water under great pressure is a known fact. But the difficulty of demonstrating beforehand that any proposed structure of this kind will withstand the pressure and be effective is, owing to the indeterminate nature of some of the risks to be provided against, very great. In the present state of our knowledge it may almost be laid down as a rule, that a dam of this kind should not be undertaken where grave consequences would attend failure until experience of structures where the physical conditions are similar, but where there are no such risks, has given assurance that such work would stand.In Mines and Minerals for May, 1900, there is published a paper by Mr. James McNaughton describing the construction of three underground dams in the iron mining district of Michigan.The first of these was put in to hold back a flow of 750 gallons per minute, which when pent up created a pressure of 276 pounds per square inch, showing that the height of the sustained column was about 635 ·feet. The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region (North West Province in South Africa) produced a substance called CRUD (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The CRUD was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the CRUD confirmed that exposed CRUD leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil.   Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, ie sulfuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels ie 0.001 M, 0.0001 M and 0.00001 M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulfuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling increased.   Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil's porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

Multi-episodic mineralisation is often characterised by different spatial trends exhibited by different generations of the mineralisation. The structural complexity of mineralisation together with the heterogeneous nature of the mineralised zones prevents unambiguous application of the conventional deterministic methodology for 3D constraining of the mineralised domains (ie conventional wireframing is ambiguous).A different approach, discussed in the present paper, includes a probabilistic definition of the domains encompassing one statistical population of the data. The domains are defined geostatistically using the indicator probability model. An indicator threshold is chosen for the definition of the high and low-grade domains. The spatial distribution of this indicator is then modelled by a variogram. The probability of exceeding the given grade threshold is than estimated by ordinary kriging for each modelled block. Blocks are then grouped according to their probability of exceeding the threshold and a continuous closed volume (domain) created from this likely patchy grouping using an appropriate structural model to fill the gaps). Methodology for the geostatistically assisted domaining is discussed in the paper. It is suggested that this technique represents an additional tool facilitating a structural interpretation of the mineralised zones.After the geostatistical domaining of the lode has been completed the grade within each of the domains is modelled using Uniform Conditioning method. Application of Uniform Conditioning for modeling the grade distribution has a significant advantage over linear methods (such as inverse distance or kriging) because Uniform conditioning enables estimation of local recoverable resources at different selective mining unit sizes that can be substantially smaller than the drilling density and are unable to be estimated directly.

The Halmahera Contract of Work is a sixth generation contract held 82.5 per cent by Newcrest Mining Limited and 17.5 per cent by PT Aneka Tambang and takes in the Gosowong Project area. In 1991 Newcrest Mining Limited established a small exploration office in Jakarta and proceeded to seek exploration opportunities. The Halmahera area was identified as a substantial prospective ground position in a relatively unexplored area. In late-1991 Newcrest Mining Limited and PT Aneka Tambang agreed to explore in Halmahera. Initial field work commenced in July 1992. A vigorous ground reconnaissance programme led to the discovery of the Gosowong deposit a little over 12 months later in September 1993. In April 1997 the Contract of Work was approved covering much of the island of Halmahera. Between September 1997 and November 1998 activities were directed principally towards obtaining the necessary permits required to commence construction activities. Some particularly ambitious targets were set for achieving this outcome. An aggressive construction programme commenced in late-1998. Construction took place during a period of unseasonally high rainfall, which in itself presented additional challenges to the construction team. A key milestone for the project was achieved on 1 July 1999 when wet commissioning of the process plant commenced. Construction of the Gosowong Mine was achieved on time and within budget. A period of some six years elapsed from the initial discovery of the Gosowong deposit to the time of the first gold pour. Much of the permitting, construction and commissioning activity took place between September 1997 and July 1999. This coincided with a period of significant social, economic and political upheaval in Indonesia. During the construction period a high level of importance was placed on the structured recruitment and training of local people, as well as fostering appropriate community and local business development programmes in the communities nearby the project. Emphasis was also placed on environmental management with detailed long-term planning and progressive rehabilitation commencing during the construction phase. The permitting and subsequent development of the Gosowong Project has demonstrated that even during the difficult times, with commitment, it is possible for mining and exploration companies to conduct business in Indonesia.

With the technique and data obtained in using the blast hole diamond drill for "Removal of Horizontal Level Pillar by means of Blast Hole diamond drilling at New Occidental Gold Mines N.L.," as described in Proceedings No. 133 of 1944, and a series of experiments using the blast hole diamond drill for stoping at New Occidental and New Cobar Mines over the past two years, a benching method of stoping has been developed using 2 inch coring diamond drill bits, resulting in efficient and economical ore extraction in these large ore bodies.During the experimental stages the standard H-inch blast hole was used, but the deflection of the holes, when using this solid bit, either decreased or increased the burden of the hole when it became necessary to drill holes deeper than 45 feet.It was found that after blasting vertical holes deeper than 45 feet, the ore did not break satisfactorily over the full length of the hole; on one occasion as much as 30 feet of bench was left at the bottom of the face, which had to be subsequently re-bored andblasted.As this defect was also noticeable to some extent even when the holes did not deflect, it was then obvious that the explosive had become less sensitive in the lower section of the hole. This was probably brought about by pressure being built up ahead of the detonation wave in H-inch hole, resulting in desensitization of the explosive.Another series of experiments were carried out, using 2-inch solid bits, which enabled a much greater burden on the holes, and the use of primacord for the full length of the hole.This gave satisfactory results regarding breaking and fragmentation, but was uneconomic owing to the excessive consumption of diamonds, and the slow rate of drilling.Further experiments were then carried out using 2-inch coring bits, (Fig. 1) which allowed holes of 90-feet to be bored with little deflection, and proved to be entirely satisfactory as to cost and speed of drilling.

The Southwest Pacific is a region of active volcanism and geothermal systems. Only in New Zealand have the geothermal systems been exploited for electricity generation and industrial processing. At present, approximately 280 MWe of geothermal electricity is generated in New Zealand. A considerable amount of further exploration work is required before the total geothermal potential of the region can be assessed and before the significance of these resources can be judged against other local energy sources.

TheFiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of: (i)                  arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii)                an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5 - 3.0 Ma) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii)               a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism.   The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 æAlizeÆ cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last ~5 Ma. The Kadavu Island group, south westernmost Fiji, lies at the north-eastern end of the Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone, and possibly results from oblique subduction of South Fiji Basin oceanic crust, which may have accompanied the anticlockwise rotation of Fiji during opening of the North Fiji Basin. These islands consist dominantly of 3.4 - 0.5 Ma old medium-high K andesites and dacites, with many traits typical of subduction-related volcanics, ie predominance of intermediate members (55 - 65% SiO2) no Fe enrichment, TiO2<1%, and negative Nb-Ta anomalies. These features contrast strongly with volcanics from elsewhere in Fiji around this time, where volcanic centres produced Om-like intraplate olivine basalts. The Kadavu Islands become gradually younger to the southwest, and show a significant decrease in K2O with time. The north easternmost islands (Astrolabe islands) containing the oldest rocks (~3 Ma) have shoshonitic affinities and are considered to be of similar age and composition to the youngest shoshonites found elsewhere in Fiji.

This paper is intended as a review from a planner's viewpoint, of the relationship between town and country planning, a primarily government activity, and the minerals industry, which, with the exception of coal, is a largely private enterprise activity. The paper first considers the nature of the system of planning in New Zealand, and the objectives sought by planners in relation to minerals are discussed. The reasons why these objectives are not generally being achieved are investigated. A final section deals with the gap between objectives and achievement, and suggests a number of ways in which this gap may be narrowed.

In the extraction of level bridge pillars in the South Mine by square-setting methods the general practice is to work transversely from the hanging wall in narrow sections three or four sets wide to the depth of the bridge-usually three sets. When the working block attains an area of twelve square sets, sand filling is run in, either by pneumatic (Proceedings No. 123, 1941) or hydraulic methods, in order to control the settlement of the general area and prevent the development of undue weight in the stope. Upon completion of the filling operations, or coincident with them, ore breaking is resumed and the transverse section of the bridge pillar gradually reduced. A number of these parallel sections may be working at the same time.In preparing a block of sets for filling a great deal of paddocking is required, both to contain the filling and to preserve access to ladderways and ore chutes which may be situated at some horizontal distance. In the middle of 2000, BHP Billiton implemented a Six Sigma Plus business improvement program known as Operating Excellence. It was developed based on a business bottom line initiative to deliver 35 - 40c/share and was one of the BHP Billiton strategies to deliver $2 earnings per share and a longer term $40 share price (BHP share price). Cannington is a silver, lead and zinc mine owned and operated by BHP Billiton. Through implementing Six Sigma Plus Cannington wanted to:have in-house capabilities to change and improve; tailor for the needs of each business unit and department; have æSharing of its KnowledgeÆ as a tool for improvement and have a competitive edge across Cannington û to be better than our competitors; learn from and leverage off the successes of improved safety and prior business improvement efforts; and ensure networking and sharing of information have common measurement systems across all assets. As with most business improvement programs û Six Sigma Plus was met with some degree of skepticism, especially given the amount of resources involved. After 18 months, much of this skepticism has been replaced with enthusiasm as peopleÆs understanding and acceptance of its fundamental concepts are being realised. The idea behind Six Sigma Plus is that it combines sound technical solutions with high acceptance by those who need to work with or implement the change. The future vision for Six Sigma Plus is that it become part of what we do at Cannington û just like safety and environment û so that Six Sigma tools and methodologies are used in our every day work.

Currently, Kanieri Gold Dredging Limited operates the only large scale gold dredging operation in New Zealand. It dredges a claim in the Taramakau River using the bucket dredge 'Kanieri'. This dredge, a 'Yuba' type, was designed and built in the 1930s. On the current claim it works about 12 hectares of ground a year. Because of its design, the tailings from the 'Kanieri' make land restoration difficult. This was unimportant until it commenced its new claim ML-32-310 in 1978. The conditions, attached to this licence required it to restore the land for afforestation, the designated use fur the Crown land being mined. With the company planning to work future claims on the Grey River, it decided to undertake restoration work on the Taramakau to demonstrate its capability of establishing pasture land on tailings, a more difficult task than restoring the land for afforestation. After two years and the restoration of two blocks totalling 22 hectares, reasonable pasture establishment has been achieved. Much has been learned to date and further refinement of the techniques used will take place over the next two years. The quality of the tailings produced has improved as a result of the limited modifications possible on the existing dredge. This has been significant in achieving better results. The knowledge gained will be taken into account in future dredge design. Both the Company and its Consultant are confident of achieving satisfactory restoration of dredge tailings for pasture land.

Mining operations are continually aiming to reduce operating costs to improve plant profitability. One way in which the Cannington operation sought to achieve this was by increasing the wear life and reducing the energy consumption of their flotation mechanisms. This was made possible using Outotec’s FloatForce mechanism. The FloatForce mechanism has been developed by Outotec over a six year period involving both CFD modelling and rigorous site testing. FloatForce delivers improved air dispersion and cell agitation efficiency; as such it can be operated at lower rotor tip speeds when compared to Outotec’s previous mechanism.Cannington trialled three FloatForce mechanisms in a train of ten OK38 zinc roughers. The mechanisms’ rotational speed was reduced by 10% compared to the previously installed MultiMix mechanisms. The purpose of the trial was to quantify the energy saving and assess whether there was any reduction in plant metallurgical performance.The trial was successful with FloatForce delivering a 17% reduction in power, an improvement in wear and improved recovery. Analysis of pre and post-installation metallurgical accounting data showed the following:The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of zinc to zinc final concentrate of 0.4 – 4.0%*The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of lead to zinc final concentrate of 0.0 – 0.3%*There was no statistically significant change in silver recovery to zinc final concentrate that can be attributed to FloatForce**95% confidence interval (CI) using multiple linear regression models.The Cannington operation is now in the process of further optimizing its power consumption and wear savings by changing the remaining OK38 zinc and lead rougher float cells to FloatForce mechanisms.CITATION:Bird, M, Oats, B and Sganzerla, M, 2015. William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author's intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. The fragmental notes which have been pieced together as carefully as possible by Mr B G Patterson, Hon Secretary Mount Morgan Branch; are as follows :-The first mine the author worked at was Carn Brea, in 1904."This is one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, and belongs to the Carn Brea and Tincroft Mining Co, which also owns Cooks Kitchen. The mine was started in 1832, but had been in a bad way for several years previously, and had just begun to recover...

Early in 1940 the development and sampling programmes in hand on the North and British Sections of North Broken Hill Limited were such as to necessitate the drilling of a large number of drill holes ranging up to about thirty feet in length. On the British Section, one purpose was to test the existence, width, and value of narrow lodes believed, for geological reasons, to occur in the walls of the existing workings. Another object was to definitely disprove the existence of payable shoots of ore in certain largerhodonite and quartz-garnet ("garnet sandstone") pillars which had been formerly left as unpayable.On the North Section, the main purpose of the short holes was to delineate the ore-body boundaries by drilling laterally from drives in ore, and thus enable level layout to be planned in advance of sill stoping. It was also desired to test the walls of stopes in those portions of the mine where the economic limit of mining is not rendered obvious by a clear-cut wall, but should be determined by assay. In these latter cases it was hoped to eliminate "prospecting by stoping," a procedure by which any doubts as to the existence of further good ore behind the low-grade walls were settled by continuing to stope laterally until all chance of such an occurrence was removed.LONG HOLE ROCK DRILLINGFollowing an investigation of recorded instances of similar practice elsewhere it was decided to use the rock drill for a series of trial sample holes. A 3-in. drifter was used. This was selected from those in use underground, and was given a special overhaul; had a new machine been purchased, a 4-in. type would probably have been obtained as being more suited to the work. The rods were H in. hollow round steel with a type "1" Jackrod thread. Couplings were of chrome steel, and were H in. in diameter, and 2 in. long. Jackbits (type "1" thread) in sizes from 2 in. to 4 in., with 1-in. gauge changes, gave a range of nine bit sizes. They were resharpened by hot milling, and were not milled to a definite gauge size.After sharpening, bits were sent underground without sorting into sizes, the drillers selecting the next bit with callipers. In view of the small scale of operations, it was not considered worth while to adopt special measures, such as the cold grinding of bits, which might have given a better product. Later, however, new bits were used exclusively, the idea being to accumulate enough blunt Jackbits to warrant a thorough treatment of the sharpening...

Western Australia (WA), alongside Brazil, has remained at the forefront of the global seaborne traded iron ore market for over 40 years. Despite this apparent stability and strong market position, WA continues to face strong external international supply-side competition, mainly from Brazil, but also periodically from often marginal, non-traditional sources of iron ore. Additionally, WA iron ore supply has undergone significant decadal change internally, both of an evolutionary (brownfields expansion) and revolutionary nature (major new greenfields projects). Since 2006, a new generation of WA-focused iron ore explorers, developers and producers have emerged.The majors, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, have expanded mine production to record levels and the Roy Hill project is now approaching nameplate capacity. Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) is, however, the largest new market entrant of the last decade, delivering upon their vision of becoming the ‘new force in iron ore’. Unlike most of the other new WA market entrants, FMG’s operations are substantive. Most of the other smaller, new WA iron ore miners have struggled during the period of falling prices, though it is worth noting that collectively they have made a material supply-side impact during the price boom – typical of marginal supply. Finally there have been some contributions from new magnetite projects, however, the delivery and economics of these projects have not met expectations.In this paper, we touch briefly upon the key global market changes of the last decade, namely China-driven demand growth and the changes to the pricing mechanisms for iron ores – before reviewing the rise in WA iron ore supply in response to these markets. We finish by focusing on the most significant WA-focused supply-side development of the last decade, the rise of FMG as a major new supplier and the strategic situation that facilitated its rise. The unprecedented China-led rise in iron ore prices felled many traditional barriers to market entry into an oligopolistic industry, allowing many new market entrants (in WA and around the world). However, the downturn in iron ore prices resurrected these barriers to entry, with only FMG (thus far) breaking the entry barrier with significant scale. Difficult corporate decisions have been forced upon the smaller WA iron ore miners who, in some cases, will now struggle to further expand, or indeed continue to operate in the longer run.The changes that have taken place over the last decade of WA iron ore production hold insights for other emergent mineral commodity exports from the state. Successful market entry, even when industry barriers are high, does not always require an immediate low-cost production assumption alongside a strong balance sheet. FMG could see a new market, within an established commodity market, target an appropriate and new product at it, overcome temporarily-felled barriers to entry in infrastructure and finance, then innovate and aggressively cut costs ensuring it was behind the barriers to entry when they rose again after the price boom.CITATION:Barrere, L, Trench, A, Sykes, J P and Davies, R S, 2017.
