Although small scale mining is regarded by many as of historical value only, this kind of mining activity is still much more widespread than is usually assumed. It has been estimated that it produces as much as ten per cent of the global mineral output. More significantly this figure is often much higher for many of the developing countries of Africa, Asia and South America, signifying the relatively greater contribution of small scale mining to the economies of those countries. It is also noted that small scale mining has always been a feature of mineral production in New Zealand and Australia. An attempt is made to define small scale mining, and the factors determining the suitability of small scale mining operations are discussed. The state of the art in small scale mining is reviewed and the author endeavours to rationalise the important parameters which contribute to successful small scale mining operations and discusses how these parameters may be optimised. The benefits of small scale mining to the mining industry as a whole and to the community at large are outlined. The paper concludes by emphasising the necessity to maintain small scale mining and 'explores' its future 'prospects'.

The latest outcome of science is that aII bodies are composed of vibrating atoms or molecules. In almost all mineral bodies when changing from the gaseous or liquid condition to the solid, if the vibrating molecules are allowed free play, they arrange themselves in a symmetrical manner, and at a definite angle to each other: This angle varies with each system of crystallization. In a great many bodies this process may be brought about artificially, and the growth of the crystal watched. The most common method is to dissolve some substance in water or some other liquid, on slowly evaporating the liquid, the substance dissolved will solidify and the molecules will arrange themselves in their particular crystalline form.The element carbon crystallizes in two forms; as graphite in the form of a short six-sided prism', and in the diamond generally as the octohedron in the cubical system of crystallization. Orystalline bodies, as a rule, have plain faces but what is remarkable in the diamond is that in a great many cases the faces are rounded. Its great beauty as a gem when cut, and the high artificial value placed upon it by fashion, as well as its value as a cutting and boring instrument-it being the hardest body in nature-has caused many attempts to be made to form it artificially. These attempts have met with fair success as a scientific experiment, but as a commercial speculation they have been a complete failure. The most noted of these experIments was carried out by Mr. Hannay, of Glasgow.Paraffin spirit with lithium was submitted td prolonged heating in strong wrought-iron tubes securely welded. In most of the experiments the tubes exploded; but in a few cases the experiments were successful, and on cutting open the tubes small crystals of diamonds were found embedded in a black mass.Despretz produced minute diamonds under the influence of a powerful electric current from coal.

The main orebody of the Bodangora mine is a metalliferous quartz reef within a major fault plane in the strongly folded and faulted volcanic rocks of the Ordovician-Silurian Oakdale Formation. The similarity of the type of mineralization to that of other pyrometasomatic deposits in this area suggests that the mineralizing fluids originated in the nearby Wuuluman Granite.The associated Mitchell's Creek West or Dick's reef is discussed briefly.

The development and introduction of a preventive maintenance scheme in the coke ovens department, coal preparation section, of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., Newcastle steelworks, is described together with its operation and the results achieved during the first 12 months.'fhe scheme consists essentially of an engineering analysis of the plant to establish maintenance schedules, and to record the details on reference cards.Items are reviewed progressively and a weekly work schedule is prepared, from which work orders are passed on to the maintenance foremen. These foremen in turn originate action orders and issue inspection sheets as required. Results are then reported back to the maintenance planner and used to revise norms, practices, and cycles.INTRODUCTIONWhat is maintenance? Some people consider maintenance to be the work involved in putting things together again after they have fallen apart. The author regards it as the mechanical care and repair of plant machinery and equipment to keep it operating in sound mechanical condition, without undue interference with production processes.Maintenance may be organized or haphazard, and, too often, what has been fondly imagined to be nicely controlled and organized maintenance proves, under pressure, to be more correctly described as haphazard. Haphazard maintenance deals with breakdowns as they occur, and frequently finds itself confronted with more breakdowns than can be handled. The area, A, under a gamma-ray log that passes through a horizontal bed given by: A = gl/k. Here is the equivalent concentration of U3O8 in the body, l the thickness of the body, and k the calibration factor or sensitivityof the logger. The area is independent of the logging speed or logger time constant.This relationship, together with the first moment about the maximum of the log and its value there suflicient to determine the thickness, position of the centre of the bed from the log maximum and the concentration of U3O8.Numerical results obtained from artificial and field data show that the computed results arc as good as those obtained by methods such as the inverse filter technique and the iterative method. The present method yields results that arc easier to feed into an ore reserve data base.

The banded iron formations "jasper bars," jaspilites, banded hematite quartzites or banded ironstones, etc., as they have. variously been termed in Western Australia, constitute one of the most striking features of the Pre-Cambrian in this State. They occur in at least two distinct divisions of the Pre-Cambrian, viz., in horizons interbedded with quartzites, shales and thin bedded dolomite in the N~llagine (Proterozoic) Series; and amongst the Older Pre-Cambrian rocks, associated with the metamorphosed sediments of the Jimperding-Chittering Series, the Yilgarn Whitestone Series and the Mosquito Creek Series, and interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments of the Older prenstone or Kalgoorlie Series.In the Hamersley Ranges in the north-west of Western Australia banded ferroginous cherts are well developed amongst the horizontal sediments of Nullagine Age. These iron formations have recently sprung into prominence as they have been found to form the host rocks for important deposits of· blue asbestos. They are closely comparable with the unique crocidolite-bearing banded ironstones of the Cape Province, South Africa, and have been described elsewhere in some detail by the writer. (1) t .The banded iron formations with which it is intended to deal principally in the following pages, form most abundantly in the Central and Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia where they form portions of the Older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie Series of auriferous rocks. In these regions their chemical inertness and physical hardness provide considerable resistance to the agents of erosion and consequently they frequently stand out in strong topographic relief in otherwise monotonously flat or gently rolling country. These banded-iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and in other portions of the State because of thei!! associations with 'gold, iron -and to' a lesser extent, manganese; whilst indirectly because of their peculiar nature, form and topographic prominence, etc, they have been of tremendous assistance to the field geologist both in the practical application of methods of geological mapping and in the' elucidation of geological structures. Finally, they have recently acquired a new importance in the specialised search for ore-bearing lodes or for structural information over areas of soil-covered country, as their form and composition make them ideal subjects for the use of either electrical or m!1-gnetic methods of geophysical prospecting.

Percolation irrigation of low-grade quartz feldspar porphyry ore with pH 2.0 H2SO4 at 510 litres/m2/day using particle sizes 1.7 - 6.7 mm in columns measuring 5 cm dia × 126 cm long was used to study effects of interrupted irrigation ('rest' periods) on metal ion release and leaching bacteria. Copper tenors increased approximately 16 fold and bacterial iron oxidation activity three fold following a 14 day 'rest'. A linear relationship between copper tenor and bacterial activity demonstrated that this experimental system was effective for quantitative studies of bacterial leaching in ore colums.

The following brief paper is intended, to apply to the concentration of the silver-lead ores at Broken Hill, New South Wales, generally, but more particularly to the process as applied to the ores in the Block 10 mine. The attached plans are similar inmany respects to those prepared, recently for the Block 10 company.Most of the information here given is already well known to those members who are conversant with the concentration practices of this field, but it is the writer's object to give just a few of those figures which he found difficult to obtain when first engaging in practical work. At that time no text-books were at hand from which it was possible to get sufficient details for practical working purposes.It is first supposed that the mine has been thoroughly explored and has been found to contain a lbde sufficient in size ·and quality to warrant the erection of a concentrating plant. The points then to determine are:-(1.) The quantity and cost of water available for steam-making and ore-dressing purposes.(2.) The most convenient site for the mill.

The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99· 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.

Author's Note: Since the paper on "All-Flotation at North Broken Hill Limited" was read and discussed, the metallurgical results obtained have conclusively justified the adoption of the All-Flotation treatment.At present the shipping grades of lead concentrate produced from North mine ore range between 74% and 75% Pb, carrying approximately 43 oz. Ag and 4.5%-5% Zn. The lead recovery in lead concentrate is recording 95%-96% of the lead content of crude ore, and the milling and treatment cost on 6400 tons crude ore perweek of 96 hours has dropped to 6s. 3.6d. per ton on ore. With an increased ore tonnage, and with a new mill, considerable further reduction in costs is certain.New flotation machines, with 30 in. vertical depth of overflow (instead of 42 in. depth), are now being tried for the secondary granular treatment, with advantageous results. The treatment to-day is practically the same as that outlined in the paper, excepting that additional concentrate is returned for retreatment in the existing units.(Signed) A. LOWRY.Mr. T. A. The fundamental features of the Cable Belt Conveyor are described. It consists of independent wire ropes which take the transmission load, and a special reinforced rubber belt which acts 'only as carrier of material. The first cable belt installation in Scotland is described briefly.A general description of this type of conveyor is followed by details of the rubber belt construction and the method of joining sections of belt. The drive unit, the tensioning arrangements and the power requirements are outlined.Applications of the cable belt conveyor are 'dealt with and its advantages summarized.INTRODUCTIONThe cable belt conveyor, as its name implies is a conveyor composed of steel wire ropes and a rubber belt, in which the ropes serve as transmission members, and the belt merely as a carrier of materials.Over the years it has been the ambition of engineers connected with the belt conveyor industry to develop a conveyor that would use the high tensile strength of wire ropes to transmit the stresses involved in the driving of large capacity belt conveyors. Different lines of approach have been adopted in the United States of America and in Britain. In the United States the method adopted was to introduce a large number of flexible steel cables into the rubber belt itself, in the form of a closely packed layer arranged across the full width of the belt. These small cables are packed in a nylon filled duck envelope which is incorporated in the rubber belt. This is commonly known as the steel corded conveyor belt. In Britain, a Scottish firm developed a rubber belt conveyor in which full advantage was taken of the high tensile features of wire rope, without embodying or moulding the wire rope into the rubber belt, so that the two wire ropes and the rubber...

The Broken Hill orebody ,occurs in the Willyama Complex, a block of Precambrian rocks which have been strongly folded and metamorphosed at moderate to high grade. Although -the origin of the silver-lead-zinc mineralization remains obscure, recent investigations have substantiated the view that the orebody has undergone concomitant high grade metamorphism with the enclosing wallrocks. The mesoscopic structures produced by this metamorphism are described, and the possible processes Telating to their formation are disoussed.In the high grade ore, metamorphic structures which can be recognized are foliation and lineation, wallrock fragments, layering, flow folds, ore breccias, and sulphide bearing veins. These structures can be related to processes involving plastic flow and fluid phase transport of the mineral assemblage. 'In areas of low grade mineralization adjacent to high grade ore, the structures more closely resemble those produced in -the wallrocks-foliatlon, lineation, layering, folds, and sulphide injections. Within areas of high grade ore, lenses and pods of manganese silicates Probably represent original inhomogeneities in the ore, i.e., portions of manganese-rich and sulphide deficient rock which have been metamorphosed to manganese silicates.From the structures displayed, a sequence of events has been established for the plastic flow of ore during deformation.

Scanning electron microscope–Mineral Liberation Analyser SEM-MLA can be used to discriminate between hematite/magnetite in iron ores, but achieving backscattered electron (BSE) segmentation between the two minerals is difficult for particles =75 µm using typical preparation and analysis methods for the MLA based on a tungsten filament SEM (Quanta 400) with 25 kV high voltage. Preparing iron ore sample mounts using a slow-speed polishing method, and conducting the experiment on a field emission gun SEM-MLA (Quanta 650) with the high voltage (HV) setting lowered to 15 kV reduces instrument noise and results in very clean BSE images and segmentation. This method requires new X-ray standards to be acquired for each mineral identity at 15 kV because of major changes in the spectra at lower kV. Andesites are a major source of aggregate for much of the North Island of New Zealand. There are regional differences with respect to some important properties of the andesites. Some are reactive with cement and are designated as potentially deleterious or deleterious by the concrete industry. Other andesites, particularly those that are slightly altered or weathered, have rather high Plasticity or Clay Indices and perform poorly in road construction.   The performance of the andesites has been investigated and can be shown to be determined by: +        the chemistry of the rock which in turn determines the chemistry of the glass in the rock; +        the presence of large amounts of groundmass glass in the rock; and +        the nature of the superimposed alteration processes. Environment of extrusion and how rapidly the rock has been cooled or chilled are also important as they determine the fabric of the rock and how much glass will be present in the rock.   There are three main types of alteration that affect the quality of the aggregate: 1.   hydrothermal alteration, 2.   late magmatic alteration associated with the devitrification of glass, and 3.   weathering.   Each of these alteration types produces different alteration minerals. In fresh andesites the devitrification of glass has an important affect on the rockÆs properties. The Taranaki andesites are shown to have unusually (in comparison with other North Island andesites) high Na2O contents, held in the groundmass glass, which is the fundamental reason for the high alkali û silica reactivity of these andesites.

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the "two flow drawdown" technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

The title of this address was selected before I had an opportunity to consider in detail the matters that I would like to discuss. Accordingly, I chose a very broad subject-so broad indeed that it would be foolhardy for me to attempt to deal with more than a few aspects of it. I do not propose to touch. at all on the developments to date of our mining and metallurgical enterprises, beyond paying a sincere tribute'to the skill and enterprise of those who have established an international reputation for Australian mining and metallurgy. I would rather look ahead and discuss certain factors that will play a decisive part in the future development of our mineral resources. I do this in no dogmatic spirit, and I hope that my remarks may lead to discussions which will stimulate action where it is needed.In recent years my colleagues and I have been forced by circumstances to give consideration to problems in the fields of mining and geology, and in process metallurgy, which lie outside the scope of our own research work. People come to us with metallurgical problems because they know of no more appropriate place to go, and it is distressing to have to inform them that it is nobody's job to offer them advice and assistance. I want to suggest to your Institute that it should press strongly for the provision of properresearch facilities for the mining and metallurgical industries, such as aready exist in most enlightened countries. In such countries, those connected with the development of mineral resources are able to obtain information and advice from Geological Surveys, Mines Departments or Bureaux of Mines, which offer far more comprehensive services than are available in this country.Before discussing specific technical problems of the mining and minerals industries, I shall enunciate certain general principles that I believe should be followed in respect to the technical side of the development of all Australian industries. The problem can, I suggest, be considered in three parts-technical education production, and research. I shall confine my remarks mostly to the research aspect, for it is with this that I am most familiar.For the efficient development of any industry in Australia, it is essential firstly that We should learn what is going on abroad, and secondly that we should simultaneously conduct independent research. In the latter sphere the Governmeht'departments and the private companies' or groups of companies should have complementary functions, the former concentrating on problems common to a number of companies or industries, and the latter on their oWn individual problems. Several factors contributing to the loss of fibre during treatment are a function of the paragenesis of the veins. The occurrence, of magnetite from the cap rock within the veins prevents complete fiberization. There is a marked similarity between these veins and those in the Koegas-Westerberg area of South Africa.INTRODUCTIONAn investigation of the mineralogy of the Wittenoom Gorge crocidolite veins was undertaken in the latter part of 1962 at the request of the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. It was anticipated that such a study might reveal the cause or causes of the lack of recovery of some asbestos during beneficiation. Some interesting features of the mineralogy and paragenesis of the crocidolite veins become apparent, but it is emphasized that the investigation is far from complete, as the study did not extend to the field occurrence.The samples examined were selected from the mill and from the untreated ore.GEOLOGICAL SETTINGWittenoom Gorge is situated on the Fortescue River in the Hammersley Ranges of Western Australia and is one of several gorges in these ranges, on the sides of which 'crocidoIite asbestos is known to occur. The Hammersley, Ranges consist essentially of a series of quartzites, shales, ferruginous quartzites and dolomites. These' rocks are part of the Nullagine Formation (Proterozoic) and are usually either horizontal or gently folded. In some 'areas small beds of riebeckite as well as crocidolite are known to occur interbedded in the sequence.Riebeckite is a monoclinic amphibole, the formula of which may be stated as Na2Fe2"Fe2" (OH) 2Si8O22, and crocidolite is a fibrous variety of this mineral. This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

For each tonne of chromite ore mined in Sukinda, approximately ten tonnes of fine overburden material is generated. The overburden typically contains about 30 - 60 per cent Fe2O3, 0.3 - 1.1 per cent Ni, four to nine per cent Cr2O3 and 0.04 - 0.2 per cent cobalt and is being discarded leading to loss of valuable metals and creating environmental pollution. In order to take the advantage of presence of iron, nickel and chromium, the present studies advocate the utilisation of nickel lateritic chromite overburden for production of Ni bearing pig iron through blast furnace extracting maximum iron and nickel from the chromite overburden. The present paper deals mainly with the beneficiation of chromite overburden, sintering characteristics and thermodynamic studies. The beneficiation study shows that a beneficiated concentrate having Fe - 50 per cent and Ni -- 1.1 per cent can be achieved from chromite overburden having Fe - 30 per cent and Ni -- 0.7 per cent. Sintering studies have been carried out with bed height of 300 and 450 mm at a suction of 600 and 900 WG respectively. The results reveal that good quality sinter can be produced from chromite overburden concentrate with a basicity of about 1.0 and coke breeze consumption rate about 16 per cent. In all the experiments, Tumbler Index, Abrasion Index and Shatter Index was found to be in the range of 65 - 70, 4.5 - 5.5 and 85 - 90 respectively. The other parameters namely softening temperature, melt down temperature, reduction degradation test and relative reducibility have also been determined. A thermodynamic analysis has also been carried out to make a technological assessment of the process for the production of alloyed pig iron from chromite overburden in blast furnace which shows that it is possible to produce nickel bearing pig iron in blast furnace using the sinter up to 80 per cent. Techno-economic analysis reveals that this route will yield a substantial profit even after accounting for cost of beneficiation, extra coke, raw materials and extra slag produced.
