The stress-strain curves in the microyield region for various Fe-C solid solutions shown by Davies and Ku are typical examples of parabolic curves defined by the expression a = kEn 111 These data, when replotted on log-log coordinates, as shown in Fig. 9, exhibit three essentially parallel straight lines. It is apparent that carbon increases the flow stresses, but does not affect the exponent n. In other words, the only factor in Eq. [1] affected by in in carbon content is the constant k. As Eq. [1] is written k is the stress at a strain of 1.0. This is unsatisfactory for examining data in the microyield region. Therefore, the equation can be altered to the form: to permit the use of the authors' microyield stress at a strain of 10-6 as k. Extrapolating the curves in Fig. 9 to a strain of 10-6 gives stress values of 2000, 3200, and 5400 psi for 0.008, 0.014, and 0.02 pct C, respectively. These values do not agree exactly with the authors' measured values, but this will not affect the following discussion. The effect of carbon content on the slopes of the stress-strain curves shown in Fig. 2 of the paper by Davies and Ku can be analyzed by differentiating Eq. [2] with respect to strain. Thus: where n is always less than 1.0. Since n is essen- tially constant as a function of carbon content for the data under discussion, the slopes of the stress-strain curves depend only on k and E. If the slopes are examined at various selected Plastic strains. i.e., 10-6, 10-5, and so forth, it follows from Eq. [3] that the dif-ferent slopes for the different carbon contents depend only on the different values of ke=10-6. Thus, the larger ke=10-6, the steeper the linear stress-strain curve will rise with increasing plastic strain. This

Dahl and Pawlek1 found that electrolytic copper develops extremely coarse grains at 1000°C after about 90 pct reduction by rolling. This coarsening occurs only under conditions of penultimate grain size, deformation, and alloying which lead to the "cube" recrystallization texture.l,2,3,5 The peculiar angular shapes and straight grain boundaries of the coarse grains were noted by several investigator.1,4,5 On the other hand, coarsening in Fe-containing aluminum or in AI-Mn alloys8 does not depend on a "cube" (or any well developed) recrystallization texture. It is true that increasing deformation by rolling, and, therefore, an increasingly well developed re-crystallization texture, are associated with decreasing incubation periods of coarsening.6-7-8 Nevertheless, coarsening readily develops in aluminum even after only 30 pct reduction by rolling, where the recrystallization texture is very weak.6,8 Also, coarsening was observed by Jeffries9 many years ago in sintered thoriated tungsten, which presumably has no preferred orientation. In all these cases coarsening is associated with grain growth inhibition by a dispersed second phase.8,9 The annealing temperature has to be suficiently high to overcome the inhibition at a few locations. But if it is too high, growth starts at many points, and the resulting grain size becomes much smaller.9 Normally, the coarse grains are more or less equiaxed, and the boundaries have a typical ragged appearance.6.8 Cook and Macquarie4 demonstrated that, in addition to the texture-dependent coarsening previously found at 1000°C,l electrolytic tough pitch copper may also coarsen at 800°C after 50 pct reduction by cross rolling. The coarse grains formed under such conditions have rounded shapes and ragged boundaries, like those in aluminum. When the annealing temperature is higher, the tendency for their formation decreases. All these observations suggest that the coarsening at 800°C is associated with inhibition by a second phase. Actually, coarsening at 800°C after 50 pct reduction by cross rolling was observed only in tough pitch copper,4 which contains Cu2O particles. On the other hand, the texture-dependent 1000°C coarsening occurs in both tough pitch and oxygen-free copper;4 it does not appear to depend on the presence of a dispersed second phase. However, the interpretation of the 800°C coarsening in Cu after 50 pct rolling as an inhibition-dependent process, similar to the coarsening in A1-Mn alloys, is somewhat weakened by the fact that this coarsening was reported4 to occur only after cross rolling, and not after straight rolling. It was, therefore, decided to re-examine this question. A 1 in. diam electrolytic tough pitch copper rod, No. 2 hard drawn, was annealed for 20 min at 700°C, rolled to 0.5 in., annealed 10 min at 700°C, and straight rolled to 0.064 in. It was then given a penultimate anneal of 20 min at 500°C and it was cut into four sections, which were given final reductions by straight rolling as follows: A 30 pct reduction of area B 50 pct reduction of area C 70 pct reduction of area D 90 pct reduction of area Specimens cut from the four sections were finally annealed at 800°C in an oxidizing atmosphere. Strip A remained fine grained up to 10 hr, but the specimen annealed 12 hr consisted of only 2 large grains. Strip B had a few scattered large (1/2 to 3/4 mm) grains after 1 min, although the balance of the specimen consisted of fine grains of about 0.02 mm. After 5 min there were several 10 to 15 mm grains present, and after 1 hr strip B was completely coarsened. The coarse grains had the same characteristics (see Fig 1) as those obtained by Cook and Macquarie at 800°C after cross rolling. Strip C had several grains of 0.05 to 1 mm after 1 min, but it was still largely fine grained after 12 hr. After 48 hr it consisted entirely of grains of about 0.5 to 4 mm, with an extraordinarily large number of twin bands. Strip D remained com- pletely fine grained after 4 hr at 800°C. These results indicate that, in the deformation range of 30 to 70 pct reduction, the incubation period for coarsening as well as the rate of growth and the final size of the coarse grains decreases with increasing deformation. CeRtain compositions of the light, i.e., aluminum-rich, alloys of aluminum with magnesium and copper have become quite well known within the past ten years under the name of duralumin. These alloys are used for rolling and forging and can be so treated as to develop quite remarkable mechanical properties. Thus a properly heat-treated alloy containing about 4 per cent. of copper and about 0.5 per cent. of magnesium, rolled into sheet or rod, will have a tensile strength of approximately 55,000 1b. per sq. in. (3866 kg. per sq. cm.) with an elongation in 2 in. (50.8 mm.) of about 15 per cent. This alloy, duralumin, was developed by Wilm,1 and its properties more fully described by Cohn.2, The authors considered it worth while to investigate the mechanical possibilities of the light alloys of two somewhat analogous ternary series; namely, of aluminum-magnesium-nickel and aluminum-magnesium-manganese, to study the effect of variation of composition upon mechanical properties within the alumimum-rich group of the aluminum-magne-

PHASE relations in the system CoO-SiO2 have been determined as a basis for further investigations of thermodynamic properties of olivine solid solutions involving Co2SiO4 as a component. Previous data on the system CoO-SiO2 are incomplete or uncertain. Biltz and Lemke1 determined the melting point of cobalt orthosilicate as 1345°C , but Asanti and Kohlmeyer2 have later found a considerably higher temperature, 1420°C. The latter authors also studied melting relations of one mixture on the CO side and two mixtures on the SiO2 side of the orthosilicate composition and sketched a tentative phase diagram for a limited composition range of the system. However, no phase identification was carried out, and the authors left unanswered the question of the possible existence of a stable meta-silicate phase. Greig3 showed that a 90 wt pct SiO2-10 wt pct Co mixture at 1725°C consists of two immiscible liquid phases. The quenching technique was used in the present investigation. Mixtures of high-purity cobalt oxide ("Fisher Certified") and dehydrated silicic acid ("Baker Analyzed") were equilibrated in air atmosphere. The samples were then quenched to room temperature and the phases present were identified by microscopic and X-ray examination. The samples were kept in small envelopes made from thin (0.0004 in.) platinum foil. Thermodynamic data which have become available recently for Pt-Co alloys4 were used to check that the losses of COO from the oxide samples by alloying of cobalt with platinum in the present investigation were too small to change significantly the compositions of the oxide material during the equilibration. A vertical tube furnace with an 80 pct Pt 20 pct Rh resistance winding was used in runs up to 1510°C. Temperatures in these runs were measured with a Pt vs 90 pct Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple calibrated against the melting point of diopside (CaMgSi2O6, 1391.5?C). The given temperatures as measured by this technique are estimated to be accurate to *5°C. Quench runs at temperatures above 1650°C were made with a modified Roberts and Morey5 strip furnace, using strip resistors composed of a 60 pct Pt-40 pct Rh alloy. Temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which was calibrated against the liquidus temperature of a mixture composed of 10 wt pct CaO, 90 wt pct SiO2 (1707°C). The temperatures measured with this technique have an estimated accuracy of +15°C. The results are shown graphically in Fig. 1. Only one intermediate phase, the orthosilicate Co2SiO4 with olivine-type structure, is stable in addition to the end members cobalt oxide and silica. The melting point of the orthosilicate was found to be 1415" ± 5°C. The metastilicate CoSiO3 is not stable at the temperatures of the present investigation. The two eutectic points in the system CoO-SiO2 where COO plus olivine, and olivine plus silica, coexist with liquid were found to be 72 wt pct COO and 1407°C and 63 wt pct COO and 1381°C, respectively. The melting point of cobalt oxide in air was taken as 1745?C, based on the previous data of Aukrust and Muan.6 Within limits of error (+ 5?C), identical eutectic temperatures to those determined in air were found when two representative mixtures were equilibrated at 1 atm O2 pressure and in an atmosphere of 84 vol pct CO2, 16 vol pct H2. This suggests that changes in oxidation state of cobalt in the condensed phases are not significant as far as their effect on the phase relations are concerned. This inference was substantiated by failure to detect7 any "excess oxygen" (i.e., oxygen in excess of that contained in Co2SiO4) in a sample of orthosilicate composition equilibrated in air 10°C above the liquidus temperature and subsequently quenched to room temperature. McLean's technique was employed to determine the effect of temperature on the contribution of grain boundary shearing to the total creep strain in pure aluminum over the range of 610° to 747°K. The contribution of grain boundary shearing at the same stress was found to depend upon a temperature-compensated time, where the activation energy AH was practically identical with that for total high temperature creep. SEVERAL outstanding investigations by McLeanl-' have demonstrated that the total creep strain in polycrystalline aluminum at 473°K arises from microscopically detectable slip, subgrain tilting, and grain boundary shearing. Whereas microscopically detectable slip arises from dislocations that move out of the grains, subgrain tilting is due to entrapment of dislocations of like sign in subgrain bound-arles. Consequently, creep in polycrystalline aggregates appears to be the resultant of two mechanisms, namely, migration of dislocations and grain boundary shearing. This suggests that an appropriate law for creep should contain two additive terms ?1 = ?d + ?yb where the total creep strain, ?1, depends on the sums of the creep strains arising from motion of dislocations, ?d, and from grain boundary shearing, ?yb. But extensive investigations5 over wide ranges of alloys, grain sizes, temperatures, and stresses have shown that the total creep strain is quite accurately dependent on the single term functional relationship ?1 = f (?), s = constant where s is the stress (constant),* ? = te-?H/RT, t is the time under stress, AH is the activation energy, R is gas constant, and T is absolute temperature. Since Eq. 2 was found to be valid over those ranges where appreciable grain boundary shearing is observed, it appears probable that the activation energy for grain boundary shearing might be identical with the activation energy for migration of dislocations. Thus, under a given stress, it could be thought that where fd and fgb represent the appropriate functions for each mechanism of creep. The primary objective of this investigation was to obtain a direct check on the accuracy of this hypothesis. Experimental Procedure and Results Rolled aluminum sheet (99.987 pct Al), 0.100 in. thick, was used in this investigation. Creep specimens having a 0.25 in. wide, 3 in. long gage section were so machined that their axes were in the rolling direction. All specimens were annealed for 9 hr at 894°K before testing to produce a mean grain diameter of about 0.1 in. One face of each specimen was polished electrolytically in 10 pct HBF4. In order to permit accurate measurements of grain boundary shearing, the polished surface was lightly scribed with a ruling machine accurate to ±0.0001 in. to give a uniform grid of lines which were 0.01 in. apart. Although it was thought that surface working might modify the creep behavior in the vicinity of the scribed grid lines, this technique nonetheless was employed because such local differences in creep properties should not modify seriously the fractions of the total creep strain due to grain boundary shearing or to migration of dislocations. INSTITUTE HEADQUARTERS, Hotel Statler. On Monday evening, Oct. 28, 1912, the visiting members and guests were informally received by the Local Committee at the Headquarters of the Institute at. the Hotel Statler. The evening was very pleasantly spent in renewing old acquaintances and friendships and in forming new ones. The first session, held Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 1912, in the impressive Assembly-Room of the hotel, was called to order by David T. Croxton, Chairman of the Local Committee. Mr. Croxton introduced the Hon. Newton D. Baker, Mayor of Cleveland, who extended a cordial welcome to the members and guests present. James F. Kemp, President of the Institute, who subsequently presided at the meeting, responded in behalf of the Institute.

Diffusion rates of manganese, aluminum, titanium, and tungsten in nickel were measured at temperatures between 1100° and 1300°C. Activation energies, Q, and values of the frequency factor, Do, were calculated for each system. Values of Q were found to be within 15 pet of that for self-diffusion of nickel in agreement with present theories of diffusion. ONE of the most interesting problems in diffusion concerns factors governing the order of diffusion coefficients of various solutes in a common solvent metal at low solute concentrations. An early suggestion by Rhines and Mehl' was that diffusion coefficients might each approach that of the self-diffusion coefficient of the solvent itself. Later Thomas and Birchenall' pointed out correlations between the order of the diffusion coefficients and the freezing point depressions of the solvent by the various solutes. Other correlations have been sought. To settle this question it seems likely that much more data will be needed and, in particular, data collected at low solute concentrations. This type can be obtained by special analytical techniques as well as by use of radioactive tracers. The following study was made of diffusion of manganese, aluminum, titanium, and tungsten in a common solvent, nickel, at relatively low solute concentrations: 1—Production of alloys of nickel with manganese, aluminum, titanium. and tungsten at concentrations of the order of 1 atomic pet. 2—Use of pressure-welded diffusion couples in cylindrical form. 3—Diffusion anneals in the temperature range of 1100" to 1300°C. 4—Lathe sectioning of the diffused couples. 5—Spectrophotometric analyses of lathe turnings for the solute being studied. 6—Calculation of the diffusion coefficient for each of the solutes as a function of temperature. 7—Interpretation of results with current theories of diffusion. Experimental Work Materials—Two types of nickel were used in this research. The grade designated as Vacuum melted Mond nickel was used for all diffusion systems except the Mn-Ni system for which the Vacuum melted electrolytic nickel was used. Analyses of the two grades are given in Table I. The manganese used in making alloys was 99.9 + pet pure, aluminum 99.99 pet pure, titanium 99.9 pet pure, and tungsten of C.P. grade powder. Alloys used in this investigation were prepared by melting in vacuo or under a low pressure of argon. After melting, all heats except those of nickel-manganese were poured into a cylindrical copper mold 3 in. long and 1 in. ID. In the case of nickel-manganese, the alloys were solidified in the melting crucible. For nickel-aluminum heats alumina crucibles were used and for all other heats, zirconia crucibles.

Otis, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, who welcomed the Institute to Cleveland, and introduced Col. Charles Whittlesey, who ad¬dressed the Institute briefly on the coal deposits of Ohio. Col. Whittlesey described the situation and character of the coal-beds of the State, and gave a short history of the use of raw coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, and spoke of the excellent quality of metal produced. The aid that a body of scientific miners and metal¬lurgists were capable of giving in the development of coal and other mineral resources was dwelt upon, and the hope expressed that the visit of the Institute to Cleveland might be profitable as, well to its members as to the citizens of the State. The President, Mr. A. L. Holley, responded to the welcome of Mr. Otis and of Col. Whittlesey, and read an introductory address on Some Pressing Needs in the Iron and Steel Manufacture. THE hydrotator coal-cleaning process was developed as an economic necessity to meet the ever-increasing demand for an inexpensive method of cleaning coal down to the sizes ordinarily referred to as "dust." As the most urgent demand seemed to be in the anthracite field, all experimental work has been conducted in that territory during the past 2 years, with the exception of a few months during the strike of 1925-26, when some experiments were performed in the Alabama bituminous fields. The first commercial plant was constructed at the Middle Creek Colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co., Pottsville, Pa. This plant is now operating. APPLICATION The field of application of the process is: 1. Cleaning anthracite fines, ordinarily described as "slush" or "silt." Slush contains all sizes from %2 in. down to and including "dust." (Anthracite passing a 32-in. mesh is also referred to as No. 2 Barley and No. 4 Buckwheat.) 2. Cleaning sizes too fine for recovery by other methods. 3. Removal of coal from sand circulated in the Chance sand-flotation process. 4. Cleaning of bituminous sizes. from 3/8 in. down to "dust. 5. As equipment for the performance of the froth flotation process. 6. Other separating, extraction and _washing. processes which may be considered outside the realm of coal cleaning. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION Fig. 1 shows the method of classification practised under the Hydrotator patent:1 In coal cleaning the machines are operated as "hindered settling" classifiers, the flow of solids and liquids being so controlled that the units may be combined in series.

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives: 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity.
