IT Is well known that manganese will desulfurize molten iron through the formation of manganese sulfide, which, being only slightly soluble in the metal, rises to and enters the slag where it remains as such (mixer slag) or is converted partly or wholly to calcium sulfide (basic open¬hearth slag). The reaction by which manganese sulfide is formed is Mn + FeS = MnS + Fe. This reaction is generally considered to be reversible, although McCance1 states- that such is not the case. The experimental work was carried out to confirm the results of Rohl2 as to the reversibility of the reaction. Six trials are herein considered. In each 200 grams of electrolytic iron free from manganese and sulfur were melted in a pure zirconia crucible in a carbon resistance electric furnace. To the melted iron in runs 2, 3 and 4 metallic manganese and manganese sulfide were added to give 1, 2 and 4 per cent. manganese respectively, with 0.50 per cent. of sulfur in each. In runs 5, 6 and 7, metallic manganese andiron sulfide to give the same proportions of manganese and sulphur as in runs 2, 3 and 4, were added. The melts were held molten in the furnace for an hour and then cast into small ingots.

Since 1921, when Hull1 discovered that cobalt can exist in the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed modifications, the transitions that occur in cobalt have been extensively studied. It is generally agreed that on heating the hexagonal lattice changes to the cubic structure at ternperatures ranging from 400° to 500°C although considerable doubt exists as to the exact temperature. Data concerning the temperature of the transformation on cooling are much less concordant and their interpretation has not been satisfactory. The study is further complicated by the fact that many investigators have reported the existence of a high temperature allo-tropic change in the range 850 to 1020°C, at which the cubic lattice reverts to the hexagonal modification. The transition on cooling, which has been reported as Occurring at various temperatures from approximately 400 to 100°C, is of particular interest. Troiano and Greninger2 have recently suggested and considered the possibility Of allotropic transformations occurring in pure metals by a shear-type, diffusionless (martensite) transformation. The case of cobalt was specifically discussed and certain observations of previous investigators evaluated in terms Of this type of Of Table 1 briefly outlines the methods and results Of previous investigators Of the transformation temperatures of cobalt. Materials and Methods The major portion of this investigatioll was performed with cobalt sheet containing a total of 0.2 pet impurities with carbon present to the extent of o,I pct. After melting in an induction furnace under an atmosphere of hydrogen, the carbon con. tent analyzed 0.03 pct. Some observations were repeated with hydrogen reduced cobalt compresses analyzing 99.9 pet pure. No significant variations in results were observed employing the as-received sheet, the remelted stock, or the cobalt compresses. Filings for X ray diffraction analysis were sealed in evacuated glass ampoules. Pyrex glass tubing was used for temperatures below (600°C and for higher temperatures clear fused quartz was satisfactory. After appropriate heat treatment at various ternperatures, the specimen ampoules were furnace cooled, air cooled or quenched by crushing under distilled water. This allowed a range of cooling velocities from less than one degree C per set to greater than 1,0oo°C per sec. The Transactions of the Institute contain nothing, as yet, on the subject of pocket-compasses; and in the belief that American miners, explorers, geologists, and engineers will gladly welcome any infor mation about new forms of apparatus, simple in construction and adapted to rapid use, I offer a short description of an improved French combination pocket-compass, which, if once introduced into use, would seem likely to supersede similar instrumens of older pattern. The instrument in my possession I owe to the kindness of M. G. de.La Bouglise, of Paris. The frame of the compass is a double-bottomed box, 2 1/2 inches square and 9/16 of an inch high, made of white metal, and with its sur faces very carefully planed. The sides of the box make true right angles with each other. Two sides are parallel with, and two are normal to, the north and south line of the principal graduation. The bottom is accurately planed, so that the instrument will lie true on a plane surface. A glass, 2 3/8 inches in diameter, is set in the top plate. The graduation for the needle is engraved on the upper face of a ring, connected with the flat disk, in which the center-pin is in serted. Between this disk and the bottom of the box there is a hollow space a quarter of an inch deep. The needle is 1 7/8 inches in length, and can be balanced by means of a small sliding piece of metal. The graduation extends from 0° to 360°, reading from right to left. The stopping of the needle is effected by a screw, A, on the side of the box near the handle, H (Fig. 1). There is also a clinometer attachment, the graduation for which is engraved on the upper face of the silver-plated disk. The compass has two sights. The north sight, B, is a simple pin, a little more than an inch high, which, when not in use, is kept folded down, and is partially protected by the exterior sliding-plate, C. TO THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OE MINING ENGINEERS. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. The committee that makes this report was appointed at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, at Denver, Colo., in. November, 1906. The appointment had in view the drafting. of a law for the regulation of quarrying and metalliferous mining under the police laws of the States, with the hope that the uniform adoption of such a law could tend to reduce the number of accidents in mining. Since its. appointment, the committee has had' under serious and continuous consideration the matter with which it was charged. At the meetings 0f the American Mining Congress in 19o7, 1908 and 1909, it reported progress. At the meeting in 1909 it was authorized to present its report not only to the American Mining Congress, but also to the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the. Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and to present its report in printed form during the interim between meetings of the American Mining Congress. The committee collected from the officials of the States of the Union copies of their mining laws. With the assistance of the Engineering and Mining Journal copies of the laws 0f Great Britain, the Transvaal, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, New aland, and certain European countries were also obtained. These laws were subjected to careful study. The first publication of the committee was a summary of the more important metalliferous mining laws 0f this country. Upon the basis of the existing laws of the States of the Union, Great Britain, and the English speaking colonies, a tentative draft. was prepared and printed in limited number in 1909, for convenience in securing the advice and criticism of a considerable number 0f persons engaged in the mining industry. In this way valuable suggestions were received. At the request of the chairman of this committee, Mr. Frederick L. Hoffman, statistician of the Prudential Insurance Company, of Newark, N. J., summarized and reviewed the available statistics of fatalities in metalliferous mining in the United States. Mr. Hoffman's report was published in the Engineering and Mining

THE Hawkesworth detachable drill steel shank and bit were invented by A. L. Hawkesworth; while he was a mechanical foreman for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, Mont. Mr. Hawkesworth died on June 16, 1925, at the time that his invention was practically a proved success. The first application for patents was made by him in November, 1918, and the bit is now being manufactured under patents issued in 1922 and 1923. The credit, for its development in the early stages belongs to A. L. Hawkesworth, Roy S. Alley, Harry A. Gallwey, E. J. Bowman and various officials of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Later improvements, manufacturing problems and the direct usage in the mines were originated and perfected by the mechanical department under C. D. Woodward, E. R. Borcherdt, head of the Rock Drill Equipment Department, Robert E. Kelly of the Mechanical Department, and various operating department heads of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of these officials in the preparation of this paper.

The John Fritz Medal was awarded in January, 1916, to Dr. Elihu Thomson, "For -Achievements in Electrical Inventions, in Electrical Engineering, and in Industrial Development, and in Scientific Research." The medal will be presented to Dr. Thomson at a meeting, to be held in Boston on Friday evening, Dec. 8, 1916, in the Central Lecture Hall of the new buildings of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The program of the evening will include adresses by John J. Carty, Chairman of the Presentation Committee of the Board of Award, E. W. Rice, Jr., President, General Electric Co., and Dr. Richard C. Maclaurin, President, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The presentation will be made by Dr. Charles Warren Hunt, Chairman of the Board at the time the award was made, and the ceremonies will conclude with the response of Dr. Thomson. The John Fritz Medal is awarded from time to time for notable scientific or industrial achievement, and was provided for in a fund subscribed in memory of the great engineering pioneer, John Fritz. The award of the medal is made by a permanent board composed of four members from each of four American National Engineering Societies, namely, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. ONE of the earliest investigations of ground water in Florida was made in 1513 when Ponce de Leon arrived at St. Augustine in search of the Fountain of Youth. The history of the development of the water resources of the State shows that the large artesian reservoir that underlies Florida was discovered in the latter part of the last century. Part of that history is given by L. C. Johnson1 who states that the first successful artesian well in Florida was drilled at St. Augustine between 1880 and 1882. After the City of Jacksonville failed to obtain a flow of artesian water at a depth of nearly 400 ft and abandoned the drilling, R. N. Ellis, City Engineer, and L. C. Johnson, using Johnson's knowledge of the geologic structure of the artesian reservoir, estimated correctly that artesian water could be obtained at a depth of about 500 ft. Thus began the development of the large artesian system in the northeastern part of the State. In 1908, the Florida Geological Survey issued its first report on the ground water of central Florida.

A COMPLETE discussion of the literature on the subject of the influence of copper on iron and steel will be published elsewhere.1 The present paper is concerned especially with the precipitation-hardening of copper steels, and brief mention will be made here only of the work of Kin-near,2,3 Nehl4 and Buchholtz and Koster,5 who alone have studied this phase of the subject. Kinnear found that normalized low-carbon steel castings containing about 1.0 per cent copper on drawing at temperatures in the neighbor-hood of 530° C. (1000° F.) increased in tensile strength and yield point, with little decrease in ductility. The maximum effect was obtained with about 0.9 to 1.0 per cent copper, and when the copper exceeded 3 per. cent no improvement occurred on reheating. Kinnear did not study the effect of time of reheating-an all important factor where precipitation is concerned. Nehl,6 who apparently was unaware of Kinnear's work, recognized the change as due to precipitation and studied the interdependence of time and temperature of reheating, the temperature of the initial solution heat treatment, and the speed of cooling necessary to retain the bulk of the copper in supersaturated solu-tion and to give an increase in hardness and tensile strength on reheating. Nehl found that if the final rolling or forging temperatures exceeded 700° C. (1300° F.) it was not necessary even to normalize the steel, but full precipitation occurred on merely reheating the forged or rolled shapes at 500° C. (930° F.).

At the beginning of the war, about 13 years ago, a conference was called in Washington to lay plans for pooling the coals of the United States. A careful review of the various systems of classification then extant showed none well adapted to the needs of coal pooling. The system of Tidewater pools then adopted, using numbers to distinguish one pool from another, was based on typical coals of different localities. At that time, the writer undertook the preparation of such a practical classification. Aside from drawing on his experience of over 20 years in the coal fields of the United States, reaching from the Pacific Coast and the Rio Grande to Rhode Island, he first examined and carded all of the large collection of coals in glass jars made by and for M. R. Campbell. Next, he carded all of the descriptions of coals he could find in the U. S. Geological Survey bulletins and elsewhere, as well as practical tests of coals by the Navy and other organizations and then took account of every published coal analysis of the U. S. Geological Survey and U. S. Bureau of Mines. A study of this information, involving thousands of recomputations, led to the presentation of a paper on "A Use Classification of Coal" before this Institute at the Chicago meeting, September, 1919. That classification was unique (1) in a classification based on "standard coal" which included moisture, but used standardized ash, sulfur and nitrogen, (2) in using physical properties to distinguish the major classes or orders, (3) in recognizing British thermal unit values in the minor subdivision, (4) in the large number of classes recognized (thirty-six), (5) in proposing mineral names for all classes, (6) in proposing a letter code for the several classes for practical use, (7) in proposing a code for expressing what has commonly been called "grade" of the coal, the grade code to be combined with the rank code to designate and describe a coal. The writer still thinks that the principles then offered, though not necessarily the exact proposals, are valid and desirable in any practical classification. IT has long been known that the outside skin of tool steel frequently exhibits properties widely different from the interior of the mass. Within the last few years it has been generally recognized that many of these properties were clue to surface decarbonization. The origin and effects of this altering of the composition have been but little studied. C. M. Johnson' arrives at the conclusion that, in annealing, "the most active agent in surface decarbonization is the rust or scale (present on the surface), which is actually reduced to metal at the expense of the carbon in the steel to which it adheres." W. H. Hatfield in his admirable paper, The Chemical Physics Involved in the Decarburization of Iron-Carbon Alloys,' has given us the most tenable theory of the removal of carbon from iron. While Mr. Hatfield's work has been principally clone in connection with the annealing of white cast iron to produce malleable castings, it is frequently applicable to the decarbonization of tool steel. The following equations which he proposed have been fully borne out by the author's experiments: 2Fe3C + 2CO2 = 3Fe2 + 4C0 2C0 + 02 = 2C02 Continuous 2C02 + 2Fe3C = 3Fe2 + 4C0 It is the purpose of the author to show, in a quantitative manner, the effect of various treatments in eliminating the carbon in tool steel. Some of the phenomena of the decarbonized surface will also be described, as well as the practical problems they present to. the manufacturer and user of tool-steel products.

A. U. Seybolt (General Electric Research Laboratory)— As pointed out in an earlier paper,41 it appears to be very difficult to nucleate Si3N4 in Si-Fe of silicon content up to around 5 pet. Therefore, one observes, as did Pearce, that equilibrations with nitrogen gas yield only nitrogen in solid solution at temperatures above about 700°C, or, as Pearce found, 770°C. Evidently, the free energy of formation of Si3N4 only becomes high enough at -770°C to overcome the reluctance of Si3N4 to nucleate. However, as mentioned in Ref. 41, if some Si3N4 is first formed by a mixture of ammonia and hydrogen, one can then replace this gas mixture by nitrogen gas, and either increase or decrease the amount of Si3N4 present at any temperature by suitable adjustment of nitrogen pressure: that is, to equilibrate with Si3N4. In the equilibration experiments cited in Ref. 41, equilibrium was approached from both sides, and it was found that samples up to 944oC, at least, were in equilibrium with Si3N4. Higher temperatures were not employed, as this would have necessitated a redesign of the apparatus for using nitrogen pressures in excess of 1 atm. To summarize, the results of Pearce's experiments and those of Ref. 41 cannot be directly compared because two quite different equilibria were studied. Therefore, the statement by Pearce on p. 1398 indicating apparent error in Ref. 41 is unjustified. M. L. Pearce (author's reply)— There was limited evidence obtained in the current investigation which would indicate that excessive "supercooling" did not occur. The Telfer Project, one of the world's newest gold mines, is located about 300 km (190 miles) northeast of the Mt. Newman iron ore project in the northern part of Western Australia. The first mineral claims were staked in 1972; and by mid-1975 ore reserves of 3. 8 million mt (4. 19 million st) of 9.6 g per mt (0. 28 oz per st) ore had been indicated. It is interesting to note that Newmont spent more than 10 years and A$10 million in Australia for extensive mineral exploration before finding the Telfer deposit, and then spent approximately A$3 million in exploration and feasibility engineering on Telfer. Including this A$3 million, a total of A$27 million was spent to complete construction of the mine, village, gold treatment plant and associated roads, airport, water and services. Over 50% of the capital cost is in the metallurgical facility, or approximately A$10, 000 per ton per day. All economically significant gold mineralization at Telfer occurs in a series of layered quartz-limonite reefs in which the former pyrite has been oxidized to limonite to a depth of 100 m (330 ft). The most important gold reef occurs at the base of the siltstone-shale horizon within the enclosing sandstone dome -like structure. At the Main Dome structure the dipping ore horizons will be mined to a vertical depth of about 60 m (200 ft) by open-cut methods. The waste-to-ore ratio is approximately 12:1. Eventually 44 million mt (48. 5 million st) of ore and waste will be mined. Mining of the waste is by contract; however, the ore and a thin layer of waste is company-mined. Dilution from mining the geological ore reserve is about 10%. The ore is completely oxidized and the gold occurs free within the reef, material as discrete particles of varying but mainly fine grain size. Most of the gold is "free milling"; that is, over 50% of the gold is coarse enough to be recoverable by gravity concentration. Two duplex mineral jigs receive the two cyclone underflows from the grinding circuit. The rougher jig concentrate is up-graded on a continuous strake from which the concentrate is tabled to produce a final free gold product. Jig tailings are returned to the ball mill and the concentrates are amalgamated. Gold amalgam is pressed, retorted, and melted into gold bars. The gravity gold recovery circuit is the same as was used in many of the gold mills in California in the 1930s.

An investigation was made of the lensile proper-ties of recrystallized high-purity tungsten and a W-1 pel ThO2 dispersed-phase alloy over the temperature region of 800° to 2400°C. The thoria addition resulted in a modest strengthening effect over the entire temperature region. A decrease in ductility of both materials occurred above 0.5 Tm which was caused by void formation. Current theories of IT has long been recognized that a second phase of hard particles has a strengthening effect on a pure metal. At low or intermediate temperatures (<0.5 Tm), the strengthening effect is thought to arise mainly from the interaction of dislocations with dispersed particles. Above 0.5 Tm, dynamic recovery processes greatly alter the deformation mechanisms from those simply involving glide, and grain bound- strengthening by a dispersed second phase do not adequately explain the tensile results. Melallographic examination suggests that the improved strength of tire alloy results from the effect of thoria on the mierostructure. Stress-dependent thermally activated processes were found to occur high temperatures. aries may act as sources of weakness rather than strength because of grain boundary sliding. Grain boundary sliding at high temperatures has been postulated to be the primary factor giving rise to the formation of voids or cavities at grain boundaries1-3 which in turn cause premature failure and poor ductility.4 Voids, once formed, can grow by the condensation of vacancies from the equilibrium concentration&apos; or from the excess vacancies produced by the deformation.4,5 The high-temperature tensile properties of unalloyed tungsten have previously been investigated by Sikora and Ha116 and also by Taylor and Boone.7 The purpose of the present work was to investigate

BRIEFLY, the ore body of the Bagdad Copper Corp., Bagdad, Ariz., is a monzonite porphyry carrying copper values fairly evenly distributed from the surface down through the primary zone. Tabular in shape, the ore body extends over several hundred acres. The oxidized zone averages about 60 ft thick and assays about 0.50 per cent copper. Under this is the chalcocite zone, or the zone of secondary enrichment, which averages about 100 ft in thickness and assays about 1.4 per cent copper. Under this zone lies the primary zone which extends in places to a known depth of about 150 ft and averages in grade about 0.60 per cent copper. Several years ago the block-caving method of extracting the ore from the chalcocite zone was installed. Then it was necessary to draw only about 250 to 300 tons per day, the capacity of the old milling plant. Early in 1943 the new 2500-ton concentrator was put into production. Drawing ore from the developed stopes in sufficient tonnage to furnish the mill at capacity proved unsuccessful in more ways than one. First, drawing the ore at an accelerated rate caused a large amount of dilution, there-by lowering the grade, and also caused funneling through to the surface. The surface material was detrimental to milling metallurgy and development of these stopes was costly per ton of ore extracted. The grade of ore decreased. making it impossible to maintain a mill head of over 0.9 per cent copper. The

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Gold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 8 Mt (9 million st) of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 0.9 Mt (1.0 million stpy 1. Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, minable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

THE mechanism of pressure sintering, or hot pressing, for ceramic materials, has been investigated by several researchers.1-8 Plastic flow has been suggested as the rate-determining mech-anism1,2 while grain boundary sliding3,4 and fragmentation processess have been found controlling in other studies. Vasilos and Spriggs5,6 have reported that pressure sintering occurs by a diffusion-controlled mechanism. For the pressure sintering of metals, investigations with lead7 and with tin6 have not identified the operative mechanism during consolidation of these powders. This note reports the results of a pressure sintering study initiated to determine the mechanism controlling the densification of spherical copper powder. Temperatures of 300°, 400°, 500°, and 600°C at 2500, 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures were investigated. The copper powder for this study was obtained from Metals Disintegrating Co., Elizabeth, N.J. The minimum purity was reported to be 99.9 pct. The powder size was -325 mesh and a lineal analysis showed the average size to be less than 1 p. An alumina die body and punches were employed. Graphite spacers were placed between the copper powder and the punches before pressing. It was expected that the graphite would form carbon monoxide with any entrapped air and form a reducing atmosphere within the die cavity. This condition was generally realized during pressing although a minor amount of oxidation occurred at 500" and 600°C. The oxide particles were located randomly in the pressed samples and were not considered to influence the densification process. Calibration tests showed the temperature of the copper pellet to be about 20°C less than the die wall temperature, probably resulting from heat losses through the punches. This difference was compensated during the experimental pressing operations. The hot pressing equipment employed for this work has been described by Spriggs et a1.9 and was calibrated with a Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton load cell. Travel of the punches was monitored with a dial indicator showing increments of travel to 0.0005 in. Relative density was calculated at selected time intervals for a known copper weight, punch travel, and die diameter. The accuracy of this calculation was *1 pct. Average grain size after hot pressing was obtained by lineal analysis. Typical densification curves are presented in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 where relative density is plotted vs log time as a function of applied pressure for the 300" and 600°C pressure sintering temperatures, respectively. The curves for 400" and 500°C were similar to those at 300°C and consequently are not shown. The curves at 300°C as well as 400" and 500°C do not show an end-point or limiting density for a particular applied pressure. At 600°C, a density in excess of 95 pct of theoretical has been reached such that further densification is extremely slow for the 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures. It is suggested that further densification at these pressure levels may be retarded or prevented by discontinuous grain growth, by entrapped gases, and by other microstructural limitations as described by Cob1e.10 The curve for 2500 psi hot pressing pressure is a straight line over the time interval although a slight change in slope may be occurring at the last time intervals. The plastic flow models,1,2 derived for hot pressing, predict the existence of an end-point (or limiting) density dependent on the yield point of the material at the temperature of interest.
